Former Pope Says God Told Him to Step Down Former Pope Benedict says God told him to step down as pontiff, breaking the 600-year tradition. He says he did not hear God's voice or have visions with angels but he experienced what he calls a "mystical experience," in which God's plan was revealed to him. Jazz Legend Marian McPartland Dies at 95 Marian McPartland, considered the first lady of jazz, has died. Born in England, she taught herself to play the piano at the age of 3. One naysayer famously told her, "You're British, white and a woman," three strikes in the world of jazz. Well, she proved him wrong. Jazz legends Duke Ellington, Benny Goodman and Arty Shaw all flocked to hear her play. She also went on to host a wildly popular show on NPR.
