The Starbucks Map

Call it the United States of Starbucks.

According to Quartz, Starbucks analysts have created a map (seen here) detailing Americans’ favorite coffee drinks around the country.

In Minneapolis, Minnesota, they favor lattes, while in Omaha, Nebraska, the drink of the day is the mocha. Meanwhile, in San Antonio, Texas, folks can’t stop ordering frappuccinos.

So where you do you fall on map?

The Facebook Experiment

There’s fresh outrage over that secret social experiment by Facebook. For one week in 2012, Facebook manipulated the newsfeeds of 700,000 Americans — pumping up positive posts from friends and families, for some; and negative posts, for others. Facebook then tracked how the posts made people feel.

They concluded that positive posts caused people to be happier and negative posts caused people to be sadder, aka: proof of an “emotional contagion.”

Despite mounting anger, though, “like” it or not, you consented to Facebook’s sociological experiment. Find out how so by clicking here.

Amy Adams Gives Up Seat

Amy Adams made one US soldier’s flight to LA much nicer.

Before her plane from Detroit took off, the Oscar-nominated actress, who was booked for a first-class seat, noticed a man in uniform at the gate. She then privately asked to switch seats with the soldier, who had been ticketed for coach.

After the switch was made, Adams, 39, met with the soldier briefly and privately by the cockpit. The actress, whose father was in the U.S. military, then went back to her new seat in coach.

Beauty Queen Loses Miss Delaware Title

Delaware beauty queen Amanda Longacre, whose title was revoked after it was revealed she is too old to meet the pageant’s requirements, will keep her $9,000 in scholarship money.

Officials with the Miss America Organization confirmed to ABC News today that Longacre, 24, will still be awarded the scholarship money she won June 14 when she was crowned Miss Delaware, even though she will no longer represent Delaware in September’s Miss America pageant.

The Best and Worst Beaches in the US

With the Fourth of July weekend nearing — AAA reported today that 41 million people would be traveling during the holiday — the Natural Resources Defense Council has released yet again its list of the US best and worst beaches.

Newport Beach in California made the list of “superstars,” getting high marks for clean water. And the beaches still in need of improvement as “repeat offenders” included Wisconsin’s South Shore Beach.

Sinkhole of Corvettes

Officials say they’d like to preserve a bit of a sinkhole that opened up under the National Corvette Museum in February. Eight cars fell into the hole but no one was injured. The cars were eventually pulled out but the hole remains and has become quite a tourist attraction. With attendance up 59 percent since March, according to The New York Times, officials said they’d even consider tossing a few cars back in.

RIP Eli Wallach

Eli Wallach, the legendary character actor whose career spanned more than six decades, has died. He played in “The Magnificent Seven” and appeared opposite Clint Eastwood in “The Good, the Bad and the Ugly.” Wallach came from a family of teachers and planned to become one himself but flunked the teaching exam. He then opted for a different path. When Wallach was awarded an honorary Oscar, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences called him “the quintessential chameleon.” He was 98. Read more about him here.

Older Moms Live Longer

New research has found that older mothers may live longer. Women who were able to have children — without the help of fertility drugs and after the age 33 — were twice as likely to live to 95. That’s compared to women who had children younger. Doctors believe the same genes that allow a woman to have a child later in life also help slow down overall aging.

Child experts said today that parents and caregivers should read aloud to children every day — from the day they are born. The American Academy of Pediatrics said that reading turbocharged a child’s vocabulary and communication skills and that the effects of being read to lasted a lifetime.
