Elizabeth Blogs About Peter Jennings Way
Huddling against a cold wind, Peter’s friends, coworkers and family came together this morning for a public tribute — one that the whole world will see for years to come. We were across the street from ABC News headquarters and within sight of the bus stop that held a larger-than-life picture of him for years. This morning our gaze fell higher — upon the traffic green sign that read "Peter Jennings Way." Mayor Michael Bloomberg put it well. "Peter’s way" existed long before the sign. It is a way of embracing the world, of letting curiosity be your teacher, of asking a question until you get a complete answer and of approaching even the most serious topics with a healthy dose of humor. Those of us who worked with him remembered his way as a leader and a mentor. Millions of others remember his way as an interpreter of world events as well. His daughter Lizzie said she hoped the sign would remind people of the journalistic values Peter held so highly and that it would encourage them to pursue their own excellence. In this way it’s fitting that a man who tried to guide so many people’s understanding of the world… a signpost in his own right… continues to show others the way.
