Al Jazeera’s Cairo bureau chief was arrested by Egyptian authorities early this morning in Dahab for allegedly "spreading false news" about this week’s terror bombings in Egypt.

Hussein Abdel Ghani described his arrest as a "kidnapping" in a phone call to his station.

The Egyptian Interior Ministry confirmed the arrest and said Abdel Ghani had been taken to Cairo for questioning.

Opposition groups said the arrest may have been prompted by Al Jazeera’s coverage of clashes between human rights demonstrators and security forces.
