FBI Terror Chief Out

The FBI today announced the retirement of Gary Bald, the controversial head of the bureau’s National Security Branch.

Bald had virtually no experience in counter-terrorism investigations when he was named Assistant Director of the Counterterrorism Division by  FBI director Robert Mueller.

In a court testimony when he was asked about his background, he said he did not think it was required that he have detailed knowledge of Middle Eastern history and culture.

In a statement, Mueller said, "Throughout his career, Gary has shown tremendous leadership, vision and grace under pressure."

His retirement is effective June 2, 2006. No replacement was named.
