UPDATED @ 6:59p ET: Below are Elizabeth Vargas’ remarks from the close of tonight’s broadcast:Before we leave tonight, a note about change. There’s been a lot of it on this broadcast. From Peter Jennings’ announcement that he had lung cancer, to his death, to the decision to name Bob Woodruff and me as the new anchors. Bob’s injury in Iraq forced us — yet again — to change the way we planned to cover the news and now, another new chapter will begin. As of Monday, Charles Gibson will be taking the helm of this broadcast as I focus on anchoring ’20/20′ and on the arrival of my new child. It’s been an honor and a privilege bringing you the news every night.  And the only thing that makes this transition any easier is knowing that you will be in very capable hands. I’ll see you again tomorrow.  For all of us at ABC News, goodnight. [WATCH]

So glad that Charlie Gibson is going to be doing the nightly news – he is of the old guard of news reporters – someone we can trust to tell us the truth about this world we live in and yet someone who has a heart – a welcome relief after the loss of Peter Jennings – never understood why they didn’t do it sooner.

Congratulations Charlie, I pray for Peters family of his passing, I hope and pray for Bobs recovery, and a congradulation to Elizabeth on her pregancy, And I cried when Charlie didn’t get the “WNT” Anchor, cause I could hear it in his voice when he talked about it, I felt he was the perfect person for “WNT”, he has compassion, he’s shows his understanding of the world and people in it. I will miss him every morning when I wake, but before sleep I will rest assure that I will hear the total storyt and in a way I and my family will understand and relate to. Again Congradulations Charlie…

Loved it when you teamed Bob & Elizabeth for W.N.T. Sorry for Bob’s serious injuries….wish him a most speedy recovery. As for Elizabeth…..a treasure ABC should be proud of…..she has done an excellent job as sole anchor – is abc panicking because of cbs and Katie Couric coming up in the Fall? Elizabeth can hold her own – should have given her a chance…..THANK YOU for keeping her to anchor 20/20……and possibly give her more air time once she returns from maternity leave…..she is most deserving…..ABC has been “my” #1 network….always…..Charlie Gibson will be most welcome as new anchor on W.N.T. (always watch G.M.A.)

Just when I get comfortable enjoying the only news program that has the guts to employ a compassionate, professional and engaging person like Elizabeth Vargas, out go the lights. If this wasn’t 100% her choice, then ABC might need to look at its own decision makers before finding another replacement besides the standard white, upper middle-class and over 50 male.

Thank goodness ABC finally came to their senses and is replacing Vargas with a real news-person. Vargas was never capable of presenting the news without adding her liberal bias to each story. Although Gibson is just as much a liberal, he is much more professional and contains his biases far better than Vargas. We watch the news to learn the news, not what you think about the news, Elizabeth..

Charlie Gibson is just what the public needs right now…experience, unbiased approach, complete honesty. He is from the Walter Chronkite school of journalists. Bravo ABC News!

Just wanting to wish Elizabeth well and thank her for all she has done these past months to bring us the news. She is a talented reporter and anchor. She took over solo at a very difficult time and I appreciate the many gifts that she shared. I will be anxious to see her back as the wise face of a woman and hope that she enjoys each moment in between!

I will miss Elizabeth Vargas on WNT. She is a wonderful journalist. I also like to watch Charlie so I am happy that she is replaced by someone that I like. Changes are good for some, but for some people like me, stability is key. I will continue to watch ABC news because I have always watched ABC news. If for some reason (which I doubt) Charlie’s ratings aren’t as high as other networks, give him a chance. Our world was rocked when Peter left us and no one will ever measure up. Thanks for the try Elizabeth, Bob and Charlie.

I am a conservative and unlike a previous comment made I felt Elizabeth Vargas was unbiased. Very sorry to see her go. NBC is out, CBS is out, I guess I will have to return to Fox News for information. I appreciated her fresh approach.

Dear Elizabeth, I want you to know that I did not stop watching abc evening news when you and Bob became anchors. You did a fine job, even after Bob’s tragic accident in Iraq. I will miss you but tell charlie, that I knew that he would eventually end up as the evening news anchor. I watch GMA every morning (especially the first hour), and Charlie, Diane, and Robin are a wonderful team. Charlie will be missed but I am looking forward to tomorrow evening when he signs on. May God bless you all. Mildred A. Parker

Charlie- a great job, as always. I still miss Peter Jennings SO MUCH, AND I also wonder where Mr. WOODRUFF will fit into this puzzle? I would love to see BOTH CHarlie and BOB as co-anchors.
I wonder how this will now play out?
Charlie, keep up the good work – BUT BOB please get well and RETURN SOON!

Congratulations to Charlie! After the devastating loss of Peter Jennings the only person I could imagine sitting in the anchor chair that would give me the same feeling of trust as I watch was Charlie. I wish Elizabeth the best and thank her for the great work she did. To Bob, I can’t wait to see him on air again b/c he too exudes the same trusting feelings in me as Charlie does. WOW, talk about pulling double duty for the next month. Good luck Charlie.

I am so glad that Charlie Gibson has finally become the anchor of World News Tonight. Why didn’t he get the job after Peter Jennings died? I think Charlie will do a wonderful job.

I believe Elizabeth did an outstanding job as anchor. She was so professional, straight forward and presented the news in an honest way. The way Peter Jennings did. Charlie Gibson is also a professional, he has been in the business for 20 plus years. I will miss Elizabeth very, very much.
