Human Trafficking: From Dubai to Brazil to Germany
It’s a scenario that is played out thousands of time each day around the world. A young woman is lured to a country halfway across the world with the promise of a good job and good pay. When she arrives, her employed confiscates her passport, confines her, makes her work in miserable conditions without pay or forces her into the sex trade. According to a State Department report released this week, 600,000 to 800,000 people are trafficked across international borders each year, a majority for commercial sexual exploitation. The report assesses the efforts to combat human trafficking by government around the world, placing the countries into tiered lists based on the compliance to standards set forth by Congress. Although it does not appear on the lists of offenders, Germany was issued a warning by the State Department as the country prepared for the World Cup: "Germany is a source, transit, and destination for men, women, and children trafficked for the purposes of sexual and labor exploitation. Victims come primarily from Central and Eastern Europe as well as Africa (mainly Nigeria), Asia (mainly Thailand), and to a lesser extent from North and South America." The report concludes that with the country’s policy of legalized prostitution, combined with the size of tournament crowds, "the potential for human trafficking surrounding the games remains a concern." This years worst offenders, according to the report, include Belize, Burma, Cuba, Iran, Laos, North Korea, Saudi Arabia, Sudan, Syria, Uzbekistan, Venezuela and Zimbabwe. Another 32 countries were placed on a watch list where the State Department found severe forms of trafficking were significant or increasing, and governments were not fully complying with the minimum standards.

What sobering news! Perhaps airports and governments should be doing more by identifying and cross verifying women who are trafficked within airports.

Ha ha what a joke!!! Who are we to warn Germany (where prostitution is legal)about the sex trade? We have the same problem here and those countries aren’t warning us!!!

why is the u.s. state dept. trying to force it,s extreme far right religous views on germany . trying to stop german prostitution though legal in the u.s. @ here in nv. where i live these idiotic religous fanatic,s are causing millions to die in africa asia etc. from aid,s though it came out of a U.S. labratory in 1980 by eliminating safety precaution,s due to budget cutback,s under reagan. if religous fanatics are not kept out of government we will be back into the dark ages. horten

Every year, the numbers of exploited humans (especially women and children) increases. Since these groups have no power politically in most countries of the world, they are helpless to fight against their oppressors.
In the United States, one of the biggest box office actors, Robert De Niro was arrested on suspicion of sex slave trafficking and where is he now????
If those in power (and in the US., Hollywood actors are quite powerful), can get away with this, then how is it to be stopped? It will take more women in political positions to stop this human atrocity from continuing.
This issue should be on every nation’s political agenda. When one looks at how a nation’s women and children are treated, one will see how humanity in general is valued.

the topic should also include “the prostitutes at the rest areas in USA”

Surprisingly, Israel is a key receiver of exploited females for the sex trades according to TV reports. Also, the former Soviet Bloc seems to feel permitting the export of young, intelligent females to brothels in Italy is a form of foreign trade.

This is a serious problem, but it looks like the State Dept. is using it to play politics, since their list of worst offenders too closely matches the countries that the US is antagonistic to, and doesn’t include other countries in which human trafficking is a major problem, but which are more friendly to the US.
Posted by: Brent | June 7, 2006, 2:42 pm 2:42 pm
Who cares who warns whom?! Each country should be warned about this danger. If this warning helps save one person from being trafficked we should all be glad the state department spoke up. Incidentally, Horten, I don’t see any attempt by the state dept. to legislate German prostitution; they are warning Germany of the ills prostitution can bring (ie the immorality of human slavery). Legal or not, prostitution can and will cause human trafficking which is immoral. Also, Horten, why would the United States purposely release aids into the world and then spend billions of dollars (under Clinton and Bush) to combat this disease? Think about it.

There are so many rotten things that go on in the world that we can have very little effect on. If we are serious, we will instead focus on what WE do and what we CAN do here in our country, where our responsibilities lie, instead of lashing out at other countries. If Condolezza Rice is serious in helping sex workers ‘rebuild their lives’, then why are we throwing them in prison here in the US? A good start would include a reassessment of the prostitution laws in the US. Germany and the Netherlands have done this with great success, both in terms of HIV infection rates and personal safety for sex workers. If we’re smart, we’ll take their lead.

Isn’t it interesting how our do-nothing-but-spend, huge GOP government can’t address any substantive issues but is an expert on sex and women’s issues?
Our two-party “system” seems to reliably attract and deliver the dumbest of the dumb.

Once again the US tries to make the rules for the rest of the world. Instead of the holy than thou attitude, perhaps the US should address its own human rights offences first. There’s plenty of them to be dealt with. Then perhaps make a true effort to work “with” the rest of the world to stop the horrible human trade that also happens in the US.

In 1959 America was the envy of the world. Now, 2006 we are the most hated nation on earth. Why is our Government trying to tell other nations how to behave when it is us who behave like uncivilized people. Bush has contributed more to this state of sad affairs than any other president although all past presidents are guilty of treason and deceiving the American public. So my advice to Condi Rice is this: Don’t worry about prostitutes in Germany because America has plenty of them on the streets, instead work with the Latino heads of state and stop the flow of poverty coming into this country, destroying our way of life.
Sincerely,

I think horten need to do a little fact checking. Reagan took office in Jan. 1981, therefore could not be a factor is the alleged 1980 Govt plot he believes. seth hits it on the head, the problem is worldwide exploitation of women and children that should be stopped wherever it occurs. Kudos to the US for speaking up!

Isn’t it very hypocritical of us to say anything to anyone about moral issues when we are willing to marry homosexuals.
I just think America needs to be careful and stop being the pot that calls the kettle black. This country has the larges “adult” film industry on the planet. We have in this VERY country women smuggled in to work a prostitutes. America’s government needs to be humbled. They are a bunch of HYPOCRITS!!!!!!!!!!!

Leave it to somebody (above) to quote some scripture. I, for one see scripture as fiction. The traffic in human currency is sickening, and should be addressed in the countries in which it occurs, most noteably with the customers. There will always be a demand for anonymous and cheap sex, my hope is that we reduce the demand to the point that the economic incentive is gone. Partner the reduced demand with vigorous law enforcement efforts and the numbers will surely decline.

One point on this jumps out at me more than anything. Our situation on prostitution in the U.S. If the state department is serious about this then combat prostitution right down the street from where you work.Washington D.C is loaded with this problem. And the bad part is some of our polititians have taken part in it.Make a real difference.Stop with the petty warnings and clean up our own yard.Declare war on human slavery. Now that’s a war worth waging.

So why is prostitution bad again? It certainly is cheaper and more effective, plus safer than hitting up cheap floozies in a bar. It’s to the point, and quite frankly those whom are held up with this as an issue or “perversion” need a reality check.
Posted by: Pocky | June 7, 2006, 5:24 pm 5:24 pm
Talk about hypocritcal.. the State Dept’s should’t be warning other countries on the issue of prostitution. That isnt a federal crime, and is legal in 1 state.
They should have stuck to their charter and requested that Germany remain vigilant about human trafficing, which is illegal in both countries. Instead they had to take it a step further and include prosituion so they could sound riteous.
Legalized prositution is a much more humane way of handling the sitution. It turns it into a legitamate form of employent with a means of escape. The typical american states method only serves to lock women into poorly paid and dangerous situations. (with the exception of nevada of course.)

I PERSONALLY THINK PROSTITUTION SHOULD BE LEGALIZED SO THAT WOMEN WHO CHOOSE THAT LIFESTYLE FOR WHATEVER REASON ARE CHECKED FOR DISEASE. I’M NOT SURE THE PROBLEM IS WANTING WOMEN AS THE GOOD OL’ US OF A SEEMS TO HAVE MORE MEN PREYING ON CHILDREN. I THINK THEY ALL DESERVE LIFE IN PRISON FOR THAT CRIME. I PERSONALLY DON’T THINK THERE IS ANY STOPPING PROSTITUTION BUT IT SHOULD BE BY CHOICE, NOT BY EXPLOITATION. I JUST FEEL BAD THAT WOMEN THINK SO LITTLE OF THEMSELVES THAT THEY WOULD RESORT TO SELLING SEX FOR MONEY. OUR COUNTRY IS RAMPANT WITH PORN AND I THINK WE SHOULD CLEAN UP OVER HERE BEFORE WE GO BUTTING OUR NOSES IN THE BUSINESS OF OTHER COUNTRIES. CONDI HAS BEEN AROUND BUSH TOO LONG.

I am writing to let all the Veterans know that it is a crime that their information is now in the hands of the wrong people. What I want to add is that few people realize they are already vulnerable to Identity Theft. There are many companies outsourcing their customer service to countries outside the US and some are 3rd world. I had been exposed to call centers in India, Puerto Rico, Philippines and Mexico.
These American companies thin we are stupid. They believe we don’t get it. I have had the pleasure of all the countries I listed above ask me for my social security number. Some of the companies I know for sure are Sallie Mae (MY STUDENT LOAN, ATT, Cingular. the credit repair sites on the web. This is very horrific for there seems to be a cover-up for these companies. I want to implore to all Americans, this is a fact and our most private information is everywhere. It is time we all see these GLOBAL customer services have information that violates our civil right to privacy.

Good of ABC’s Investigative Unit to report on this year’s State Dept. “Trafficking in Persons” Report. Mexico is on the Watch List and this was part of the “country narrative”:
“Women are also trafficked into Mexico’s sex trade as well as trafficked via Mexico into the United States’ illegal sex trade under false pretenses by organized criminal networks. The Mexican trafficking problem is often conflated with alien smuggling, although frequently the same criminal networks are involved. Pervasive corruption among state and local law enforcement often impedes investigations.”

This is a totally phony story made to perpetuate the puritanical and feminist stigma against prostitution. If the state dept is so concerned about these women, offer them all asylum in the USA. These statistics come from this Donna M. Hughes, who don’t like the fact that pretty women can make more money than ugly ones. The Christian church does not want a threat to it’s business.
At least the rest of the world does not believe the Bush propaganda.

Bull. I live in Germany and there are no attractive young women selling themselves at all…so that rules out any slave trade by default.
This is a combo of the far-right losing the respect of single males and the far left radical feminists.
Bush doesn’t even know he is at 30% because the military doesn’t respect the way he grovels to “security mom feminists”.
When they legalized prostitution in Germany…they added a “clause” that said you had to be 21 to be a prostitute.
What?! That amounted to criminalizing it. A prostitute’s best years would be 18, 19 and 20.
What happened was the older women professionals wanted to block the most serious competition.
Now Germany has a small and aging population of ugly, cigarette smoking professionals. Prostitution is the one profession where any experience at all makes you less and less desired. Think about it. When I was single, I’d have only paid to be the first customer of an amateur…as would any fundamentalist Christian American hypocrit politician.
Germany also destroyed the industry by legalizing it because the more desirable amateurs (upper middle class college students) would be the least likely to register their names with the local government.
The fact that the US Government is calling this “trafficking” shows that the Republicans have completely gone over to the feminists. There will be no carloads of young and unwilling Eastern Europeans coming here this weekend.
The more serious result of the marriage between the Republicans and the Feminists in the USA is the IMBRA Law which a judge in Ohio just ruled on saying: “The Supreme Court has never explicitly recognized a fundamental liberty interest in an American meeting a foreigner for an intimate relationship”.
We’re talking about legitimate Internet dating websites here and the law that basically forces foreign women to appear only on anonymous webmail sites like Match.com (Match.com helped write the fascist law).
That means “No Second Amendment Right of Association between Americans and Foreigners”
You might think “Good, that means the end of Mail Order Brides” and you’d be wrong. Match.com bribed Senator Cantwell to still be allowed to have foreigners on their site and other international dating websites will simply move to Canada if the Supreme Court upholds the new IMBRA Law…but the USA will be in the hands of the Republifeminists.

I am a seen-it-all, been-there-done-it-all, senior citizen. I have traveled abroad with my then 14 year old son and had older men proposition him almost under my nose! There are soooooooo many sicko’s out there nothing surprises me.
One 3 month trip to Europe and The preditors were as plentiful as fleas. I didn’t fear for MY safety as much as I did for my son’s whom I NEVER let out of my SIGHT!
It is here in the USA also. Big cities, where people don’t know their neighbors, harbor hundreds of thousands of preditors. Even the malls, restrooms, parks, parking lots, playgrounds, our own neighborhoods are not safe!
One only needs to go online and look at the listings of chat rooms. Listen to the talk in ANY chat room and you will know how saturated the preditor problem is.
The parks in my area (NW IL) are not safe for women or children!
Children disappear everywhere in this country…everyday by the thousands! Trafficed for sex, as well as raped, beaten, abused, and
neglected. They are bombarded with television immorality, violence, swearing, and gutter quality lifestyles. From day one of life. I happens every minute of every day. Today’s children will be tomorrows abuser’s because they are being forced to be a part of “the society of irresponsibility” from birth.
What goes around…will come around…and it will kick us all in the behind with ever increasing corruption and problems. But the “ALL for ME, feel good, greedy exploiters and users”, just don’t get it….nor do they care if they hurt innocent people.

Is it me, or is it becoming more and more obvious that America has a major problem with tolerating any culture on this planet other than our own.
Sure trafficking is abomniable. But “trafficking” it is not synonymous with Germany’s legalization of prostitution.
It’s time we drop this puritanical moral superiority complex before we alienate even more of our world neighbors with our arrogance and self righteousness.
A universal culture is the antithesis to natural law and if we are to infect the world with one anyway, we’d best find a better one than our own to infest everybody with.
We have perhaps the largest per capita prison population in all the free world.
So what makes anyone think, we’re getting things more right than anyone else???

Addressing the article of human trafficking. Most of the comments I read on this were very much prejudice to the current administration, instead of an opinion on the problem. No matter what your “religious” or “political” views happen to be, no one should be forced into prostitution or any other servitude. How can anyone not want to bring to light those that are profiting from human trafficking? Everyone who said we should clean up our own back yard before telling others, OK, I have no problem with that, but if we can by process of foreign relations inform other countries of this problem, what is the matter with that? Why not say, “I hope this does some good, even if it helps only one person, at least it helped that one person”. Instead, we criticize and gripe and complain, instead of lending a helping hand.
Posted by: Donna | June 9, 2006, 12:19 pm 12:19 pm
I read the comments posted and m shaking my head. This DOES have to do with morality- the morality of enslaving a human being, for any reason- thought in this case it’s prostitution. The fact that it’s legal in Germany makes it easier for the traffickers to carry on their business, that’s no surprise.
Why slam the US? Do we have it here? Problably, does it make it right? No. Does that mean we can’t be aware and condemm it wherever it is?
This has nothing to do with the morality of prostitution, this has to do with the morality of enslavement and , basically, women and children being raped several times a day- since it’s non concentual sex- what else can you call it?
“All that’s necessary for evil to triumph is for good men to do nothing”- so…, do you still think we should keep our mouths shut? Whenever or wherever this happens?

It is sad to read the comments that were made concerning this article. The saddest thing is that the ignorant and/or stupid comments were mainly from men who have no clue or heart. Children as young as four years old both male and female are kidnapped and/or sold into a business strictly for the deviant pleasures of predominately white men who have enough money to travel throughout the US and other countries strictly to have sex with young children and women who have not asked to be in this position. Imagine your eight year old daughter or son being kidnapped and sent to another country or even another city in the US so that men can, not only damage their bodies but damage their minds permanently for a few minutes of their own pleasure. Not the pleasure of the so called “sex worker.” The article does not talk about people who voluntarily want to be prostitutes but people who are kidnapped or lured away from their homes. Those who made sick comments sound as if they have no problem with having sex with people against their will for money. Thus, the proliferation of sex for money will always exist and so will rape. But until you work with children who are sexually abused as well as physically abused, you will never grasp the volume of sick individuals in this society willing to damage another human being for their own enjoyment. You don’t even have to look at other countries to find this. Just look at your neighbor or even yourself in your own homes. What are you doing with your children? What are your children doing to each other? Do you really know? The problem will never be resolved as long as ignorance reins and our hearts and minds are closed and self-centered. Think about it, would you like to be kidnapped and forced to have sex with hundreds of different men on a weekly basis? How would you like to be infected with STDs? How about the men who bring STDs home to your daughter, sister, mother, wife or son? When does it stop?
The US is only warning Germany that during the World Cup festivities, women and child could be exploited sexually as lots of travellers come to participate in the event.

I think this is just an other example of the American feminists group putting their tentacles into the International arena. Once they ruined American romance with their Feminist ideology they weren’t satisfied. The feminist movement is now in an evolutionary phase that is aligned to a hate movement than a movement. How many times does history repeat itself. Sure when the womens movement started women were good reasons for their early efforts to protect womens rights. But the feminists have gone from having moderate views to being dominated by extremist liberals. These extremist groups recently were able to pass a law which prevents American men from corresponding and marrying foreign women. IMBRA 2005 severely limits a mans ability to date and marry foreign women. These American man merely want to have the ability to date foreign women . Nothing wrong or immoral about that and yet these crazy American women want to oput a leash around Americans neck to control everything they do including preventing an American man to travel oveerseas and meet foreign women.
The tide has turned and its now time for American men to stand up to these crazy loonatic feminists.

aren’t there laws on the books already re: kidnapping and involinary servitude? enforce thelaws on the books first rather then make new ones. it’s like illegal imagration, if we penalised the employers it would stop a lot of it. like gun control, most states had laws that would put criminals away who use guns they just didn’t enforce them. yet liberals want to punish honest people who use guns to protect themself.

Girls Trafficking and HIV/AIDS in Bangladesh
Trafficking of women and girls has been a common problem for south Asian region. Every year, thousands of Bangladeshi women and girls are trafficked to India. In the absence of effective anti-trafficking actions, innocent girls are lured, deceived and kidnapped into sex trade. Poverty and illiteracy have also fueled the sex trade. Gender discrimination and ignorance are other factors that have encouraged enrolling the sex trade. In some remote or border areas’ girls with little formal education are particularly vulnerable.
HIV/AIDS is a viral Sexual Transmission Diseases (STDs) which threatens life expectancy and, with it, development, social cohesion, political stability and food security. It imposes a devastating economic burden on countries. Behaviors that bring the highest risk of infection in Bangladesh are unprotected sex between sex workers and their clients, needle sharing and unprotected sex between men.
HIV incidence is rising faster in India that is the neighboring country of Bangladesh. In India rates of sexually transmitted infections and injecting drug use are also on the rise. Drug trafficking, along with the economic and psychological consequences of recent conflicts, is increasing the likelihood that HIV epidemics will emerge in this region.

I would caution readers of this forum not to rush to judgement regarding the information being supplied by the State Dept. Office to Combat Human Trafficking.
I am a highly respected (and anomomous) US government official involved in “Smuggling Interdiction” efforts. Although Human Trafficking is a horrific crime the US State Dept. continues to use government sponsored hysteria (paid for with US taxpayers) in order to grossly exaggerate numbers of foreign women who are victims of Human Trafficking for sexual exploitation.
During last summers World Cup John Miller and the State Dept. Office to Combat Human Trafficking issued this warning against Germany, host of the World Cup: “Germany is a source, transit, and destination for men, women, and children trafficked for the purposes of sexual and labor exploitation. Victims come primarily from Central and Eastern Europe as well as Africa (mainly Nigeria), Asia (mainly Thailand), and to a lesser extent from North and South America.”
Last summer the US State Dept. and
various fenminist groups and newspapers claimed that 40,000 women would be smuggled by sex slavers into Germany to be prostituted to World Cup football fans. Despite this huge “awareness campaign” ironically led by the radical(leftist)feminists in America the real truth revealed that only 5 arrests for prostitution connected to the World Cup. Of those 5 arrested all came from the European Union countries which meant they freely travelled there. So of the 40,000 that were suposdly to be trafficked into the Germany (being sexually exploited as slaves) the real number of women traffficked was a big fat ZERO.
The State Dept and various USA feminists groups have created this
hysteria that 600,000-800,000
women are trafficked across International Borders. These are the same feminists who have stated that all marriages between US citizens and foreign women represent “servile sex trafficking” and inherently abusive despite they have no reliable factual information other than rumor mill hysteria. (The American feminist groups have been so successful at brainwashing the American public they portray an immigrant woman as a sex slave if she prepares dinner or washes her mans clothes.
Well… human trafficking is a horrific problem but the State Dept. Office to Combat Trafficking has been manipulated by radical feminists groups (NGO’s) in the USA and the money being spent in hysterical campaigns not being appropriately spent directly on the problem.

Are you people dense? The US isn’t referring to “legalized prostitution” it is referring to “trafficking” i.e. women and especially children being tricked/stolen and forced into prostitution. This is a worldwide problem that needs to be brought undercontrol!
