Afghanistan: The Forgotten War?
While Iraq is front and center, security experts worry Afghanistan is becoming the forgotten war. New reports from NATO military officers on the ground in Afghanistan say parts of the country are slipping into anarchy. Over the last four years, the number of insurgent attacks and deaths in Afghanistan has skyrocketed. "The stability and the level of security in the south is deteriorating pretty significantly," says Seth Jones, a nation-building and security expert at the RAND institute. Jones says the most important factors to rebuilding Afghanistan are resources and patience, both of which have been comprised because of Iraq. "A lot of the resources that might have gone into Afghanistan, that is the levels of troops or the amount of money, ended up being diverted as early as 2001, certainly 2002, to planning efforts for Iraq," says Jones. "It created a window of opportunity for the Taliban to stabilize themselves in the border regions." The Pentagon maintains that both the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan can be won. Jones doesn’t disagree but says rebuilding Afghanistan has to be a long-term international priority, dependent on more than just the U.S. committing resources and troops. "Once an insurgency breaks out, it takes 14 years to win it," says Jones. "I think the United States can do it, so long as they get support from allied countries."

No one has forgotten Afghanistan. Maybe, ABC just remembered it. The war in Afghanistan has, by and large, been won. For starters, terrorists aren’t “insurgents” and they will be among us for a very long time. There is no evidence that the Taliban is ever going to reclaim Afghanistan. Seth Jones comes across as an idiot or is misquoted out of context so badly he makes no sense.

I we have “won” in Afghanistan
why was it necessary to reintroduce B1-B Lancer heavy bombers there in May of 2006 along with
increased air attacks by French and British fighter bombers and A-10 ground attack planes dropping increasing numbers of 500 and 1000 pound bombs?
If this just the “last throes”of terrorists in Afghanistan than why are air attacks up by 50 percent in recent months in areas where the Taliban was supposedly driven out four years ago?
When is ABC news going to show the daily CENTAF air power reports on both Iraq and Afghanistan that show our growing air war and use of heavy bombs in contradiction of the supposedly “improving situation” in both countries.

Ms. Penny, I take it you are ready to volunteer for a quick trip to verify that the Taliban are in the last throes? I’m willing to kick in an even grand for your airfare to Kabul. We’ll just want some evidence… some photos of you wrapped in Ol’ Glory on the road to Kandahar ought to suffice.
