Katrina Contractors Stiffing Migrant Workers
The Department of Labor is investigating worker exploitation in the Gulf Coast and attempting to recover millions of dollars in back wages to compensate workers. Tens of thousands of migrant workers are being lured to Katrina-ravaged areas by government and private contractors who pay as low as thirty dollars a day, if they pay at all, say non-profit groups working in the region. When the workers arrive, they find they have nowhere to live, and many of them work in hazardous places without protective gear. Judith Browne of the Advancement Project says migrant workers often keep quiet, fearing deportation if they complain. "Many of them are living under a state of fear," she said. "The contractors are turning around and having immigration officials deport them." To combat worker exploitation, the Department of Labor tells ABC News, they have recovered in excess of $1 million dollars in back wages for employees in hurricane-related cases since last November. They also say employers have agreed to pay an additional $2 million more. "The Department of Labor has been aggressively on the lookout for potential exploitation of workers in the Gulf Coast Area," says a statement released by the Department of Labor. Some migrant workers, even illegal immigrants may benefit from the Department of Labor’s wage recovery efforts, but it’s unclear how large that number is. Department of Labor sources tell ABC News they do not ask workers about their citizenship status, but they do enforce labor laws. While the government is trying to compensate workers treated unfairly, it is also still unclear what the government is doing to improve work place conditions for migrant workers in the Gulf Coast area.

So what if these people are illegal workers, they did a job that needed to be done. If they had more Americans that wanted to work, I mean reall work and not care of how much money they had then they would have the jobs. But nowadays you can find teenagers let alone many americans that want to work for anything less than $12 an hour…. Money is money and it all adds up in the end, and that is how you get started and knowledge of how to do the work.

I understand why someone would come here illegally to work. I don’t agree with their doing it, but I understand why they do it.
But I am tired of hearing Americans are unwilling to work for less than $12 an hour. Of course anyone – including illegals – wants to be paid a decent wage(that’s WHY illegals come here… they are “unwilling to work” for less than 70 cents an hour!) In fact, we could say illegals are “unwilling to work” in their own country. That IS why they come here: for HIGHER PAY.
The illegals who come here would also prefer to be paid more, but they are stuck being exploited.
Millions of Americans DO WORK FOR LESS THAN $12/hr.
I have been paid way more, and I have been paid way less. I am tired of the lies that I somehow don’t want to work.
I got the skills of tomorrow and did the job better than the good ol boys, but was paid way way less, so I know what it means to be exploited. I am just lucky because I was able to PROVE I was not only as good, but way better.
I still didn’t get paid what I should have been paid, but at least I know it’s a lie that it was because I somehow failed to be good enough.
When the .com market crashed, I was unable to take those jobs I had done in the past because they were taken by illegals and bosses did not want to hire someone different from the illegals, NOT because we were “unwilling to work” but rather because we did not fit in… even if we spoke Spanish. And, probably, because the companies feel they can get away with more abuse of illegals, because illegals are afraid to complain.
I DID NOT sit there “refusing to work”.
It is NOT TRUE that Americans are unwilling to work. It is NOT TRUE that illegals do a better job. In fact I see attitudes among them where, because they have been exploited, they get away with giving as little as possible back in job quality.
I think companies which hire illegals should be treated like the criminals they are. They are using all of us, including the illegals.
I think illegals should be deported and should not be hired here. People are dying in the desert because companies lure them here with promises of jobs.
Companies doing that should at least be fined huge huge fines and the money given to create or improve jobs for people already citizens here, doing things that need to be done.
The illegals should be deported and if possible fined.
Mexico should be fined for each Mexican illegal we must send back.
“Money is money and it all adds up in the end, and that is how you get started and knowledge of how to do the work” …What?!!?
Unless it adds up to pay the rent and gas to get to work, then it is NOT enough! This isn’t about “getting started”. I’ve been at it for years. And I succeeded at what I did.
The notion that Americans should somehow not care what they are paid but should just do “real work”… that’s insane. ILLEGALS CARE: THAT’S WHY THEY ARE HERE!
I don’t care about money, but my landlord and my doctor and the dentist and the grocery store and the gas station sure do! If I don’t pay bills, then I am bad. It takes money to pay bills. Enough must come in to cover bills, or bills cannot be paid. Understand?
I work a fulltime job for way less than $12/hr, and I am an American. I even have dental insurance I pay for, but I cannot afford to go to the dentist to have my teeth fixed, so I go to work everyday in pain.
I lost everything I had when the recession hit Southern California and the jobs I used to do were all taken by illegals who did not even speak English… I had to leave and start over again. Only to be told by Mexicans here that illegals are only taking jobs I am unwilling to do.
Rubbish!

I am a resident of the Gulf Coast when Katrina struck our State offered unemployment benefits for 10 months to all who were affected. There were no workers for 10 months now that the unemployment benefits have ran out some people are going back to work some are still living on FEMA money. And yes we see Mexicans working everywhere and I mean everywhere from McDonalds to Holiday Inn there is not enough Americans willing to work anymore if we did not have these workers we not have nearly the recovery rate that we have now. I am not prejudice the work has to be done. Who else will do it?

OKAY
lets start by saying I agree with boths sides. I can’t stand it when people are so one sided and can’t step out on their shoes and look at the views of someone else. I know some people who are here from mexico and don’t have all the paperwork to be here. But guess what it’s not because they came here looking for jobs. They came as kids and had no choice in what to do. So now they are all adults and guess what they went to schools help with fund raiser and afterschool projects.
I just don’t get it that you people who are like send them back and charge mexico for them. If I can think when all of this talking about illegals came because Bush can’t take care of his business in Iraq and needed people to talk and think about something else. And it’s all about terrorist they need to build a wall. If we look back Canada is the one who let all of them in and didn’t care, but somehow mexico is to blame for all of this.
People please take a good look at yourself. Mexicans that are crossing just want to do better for themselves. Grated there are bad apples but it’s not like people born in the USA are all perfect. And some of are not so fine people go into mexico.
And everyone who thinks we should round them up and send them home. take a look at yourself in the mirror and say what would god do.
It doesn’t matter who your god is. would he treat another HUMAN that way. And KARMA is always something it will come back to you.
Oh and the thing about they need to speack ENGLISH. There are a lot of BORN AMERICANS that don’t speck english, no because they don’t know who but they fill more comfortable talking there lanauage no matter it be spanish, russian, italian, or polish cuz where I am from we all do are thing and can get along.

We wouldn’t be reading stories like this if we didn’t seem to welcome into the country the masses of illegal immigrants that are so easily exploited.
And our tax dollars were still spent, Judie. It just made some crooked contractors rich instead of making a living for honest American citizens (who WOULD do the work for a living wage).
The article states that some government and private contractors pay as low as $30 a day (if at all) — $10,950 a year working all 365 days of it.

Hey, wait a minute. If cheap immigrant labor is good for our economy because it helps keep prices down, wouldn’t it be even better to just force a bunch of workers onto boats and bring them into our country to do these kinds of jobs with NO pay at all?
That would REALLY keep costs down!
Oooh, that’s right. We already tried that, and its damaging effects on this country still linger many generations later.
Anyone who thinks we can create a second-class citizenship to do the jobs “Americans won’t do” without paying the price generations later is fooling themselves.

I’ve gone through several jobs in a few years because of outsourcing, and I work a high degree science job. I tried getting a job “most Americans wouldn’t work” and couldn’t find one while unemployed.
The American workers are being squeezed out, and when we complain about the illegals taking the jobs, we’re called racist.
Tell me something: For those of you out there who say our complaints are just racism…what makes you think that the corporations treating middle class American workers like trash today, won’t do the same to the illegals tomorrow? What makes you think we are describing an imaginary problem that won’t affect many illegals out there at some point, long after American workers lost the fight.
This affects all of us…and the illegal workforce is nothing more than slave labor to be exploited.
The work of illegals benefits the rich, not the US economy.

Right on, Alice and Will. America had better wake up and realize the laws that were set into place regarding immigration were set in place for a reason. If ANYone from ANY other country wants to migrate to the U.S., fine. But they should do so legally, and thru the proper channels… JUST LIKE THOSE WHO ARE ON THE WAITING LIST RIGHT NOW and who are NOT illegally crossing borders to get into someone elses (OURS) country without the proper process.
And, how can someone who is NOT a citizen of the UNITED STATES of AMERICA (those who marched in protest for America sending illegal aliens back to their home countries) demand the rights that are guaranteed by OUR Constitution as OUR inalienable rights due a CITIZEN of the UNITED STATES, not an alien (citizen of some other country)? WHAT’S UP WITH THAT?
We (America & Americans) had better be careful. Greed by employers who would rather sacrifice the safety and security of his/her own country to pay low to no (room and board instead of pay– and you’d better believe that has happened and still is) wages so their profit margins are greater, need to re-examine their motives and determine if our destruction (another 9/11 caliber tradegy) is worth it.

Illegal? Yes there are many people who are here that are illegal. But at the same time the billions of dollars in contracts given out post Katrina were in themselves illegal.I don,t believe anyone talked about running off the senators or the Head of Fema and Homeland Security for giving those contracts out illegally

I think that when a migrant worker decides to accept a job, they also accept the risk associated with the work that they will be doing, therefore if they are in risky conditions then I guess that they got what they got.

Your illegal – you are expendable. Go home to your own country if you want some protections or rights. We have our own issues without taking care of the whole planet, one Mexican at a time.

You’re damn right Joe. These guys want to break into our country and live the dream while disrespecting our laws. Screw ‘em.
We should employ them for peanuts and then deport them as soon as they get hurt or are no longer needed. Maybe it could be a bit of a deterrent to more of them coming north.

Tom,
They can also be used for organ donations. They want to be US citizens – cough me up a kidney.

Get them out of here!! They are taking jobs from Americans. If they have the will to survive here, get a job here, and bring their family here they shoud have the will to become an American citizen, if all that is important to them. Why should they continue to change the ways of our lives. Have you noticed how many things we have done to ” make their life easier” ????? Go to the bank and use the machine. Choose between spanish and english. Ahhhhhh!!!!!
They are taking over. Just take a look at every day things and you will see how many changes WE have made for them. If they want to live in the U.S then they should learn English. Just like if I moved to China, I would learn Chinese. Our goverment just doesn’t get this.

I stayed in a Florida hotel, paid a high price, thought I was safe – female age 63 put in the workers section in the very back of the hotel with migrants and truckers for 6 days with no protection. Mexicans, no English, some drinking. The problem with this is that no one can guarantee the safety of the American citizens because there are not enough law enforcement officials and certainly none at the quality hotel I stayed in. There is high drug usage among many and there is no way of knowing who were criminals in the country they came from. There are no records because we assume all immigrants are safe and they may not be. We cannot control the vast numbers of unknowns – unknown history. The hotels cannot control the destruction to their rooms. And I wonder why I am having to pay extra money padded in the hotel bill to supply rooms when I am on a fixed income. This is not fair and it is not safe for me. There are too many Americans that need jobs and they should come first. We also cannot afford the medical care for these migrants and illegals for it is draining the Medicare budget. It is a big problem and we are also lowering the standards in the schools for children that may not be able to learn. The diversity we are seeing in salaries I believe is a product of the lowered educational system for the general public and the advanced education for the wealthy. We are creating an increasing span in earnings for Americans because we are creating a span in education. We are lowering the standards in America and if this continues we cannot be a leader for the world.

I wish I could be sympathetic but when you actually witness illegal immigrants or their supporter using actual Hurricane Katrina victims identities and taking claims for themselves, you tend to be cynical.

Hurricane Katrina was one of the deadliest hurricanes in the history of the United States, killing over 1,800 people.
The confirmed death toll (total of direct and indirect deaths) stood at 1,836, mainly from Louisiana (1,577) and Mississippi (238). However, 705 people remain categorized as missing in Louisiana, so this number is not final. Many of the deaths are indirect. It is almost impossible to determine the exact cause of some of the fatalities.
I was talking to my friends and they informed me that Hundreds of thousands of local residents were left unemployed, which had a trickle-down effect as lower taxes were paid to local governments. Before the hurricane, the region supported approximately 1 million nonfarm jobs, with 600,000 of them in New Orleans. It is estimated that the total economic impact in Louisiana and Mississippi may exceed $150 billion. so i cant imagine why anyone would stiff anyone.

Corruption and greed. The southwest was once part of Mexico, so Mexicans are not aliens. The threat from the Ocean crossers vs the river crossers far out weighed anything the Mexicans have presented here. Whole people were wiped out along with culture and language. Some of you people are ignorant haters, and need to get out of this country, because you have no place with those kinds of attitudes. Too many Immigrants from all over Europe came after Mexico said, “Mi casa es su casa” then they took over through as series of invasions, now turning th etables with propagandic lies. Now that China has all our money, because we broke our NAFTA agreements with Mexico, we are being inundated with immigration. If birds can fly across the borders, then humans who are greater (supposedly) should be able to, as well. Especially Mexicans, because this once was theirs, and Santa Anna said, after being forced at gun point, “Mexican shall have the inALIENABLE right to be here.
If we had taken part of Italy, believe me, we’d be complaining about all the illegal Italian aliens, who would just scoff at US for our IGNORE-ANCE!
If we all want to be farm laborers, I’m afraid we will not be able to compete with the world, because produce will be too expensive, even more than now by quite a lot of money. All we need now with all this outdated pride and predjudice now is for a made in China bomb launched by n. Korea to come pounding on Los Angeles. Get a life you imperialistic creeps (not all of you, thank God, of course). We should have been far more cooperative with Mexico instead of making a mockery of NAFTA. Mexican trucks and all (which by the way, are really American trucks, as Mexico does not have their own car, or truck brands, you ignorant fools!).

What happened to my comments? What are we in the Soviet Union, where everything is being spied on and censored? Probably. They just took the S.R. out and left the U.S. in. Oh, well. Not surprising with all this nonsense hypocrisy (vs democracy). Too bad, how sad!
