More Laptops Stolen, This Time Navy Hit

There has been yet another theft of sensitive government information on military personel. This time, the Navy has been hit.

Two Navy-owned laptops containing sensitive personal information on about 31,000 recruits from New York and New Jersey have been stolen, officials said today.

They were grabbed from Navy recruiting offices in Trenton and Jersey City. About 4,000 names, along with Social Security numbers, were listed – making the recruits listed in them vulnerable to fraud and identity theft.

In an official statement, the Navy recognized the magnitude of the theft. "The Navy is identifying all affected individuals immediately," said Lt. Bashon W. Mann.

Come on gang……Maybe we shouldn’t use laptops in Government agencies. The reason they are stolen is for drug or Pawn shop money, not for content. This ain’t going to stop. Either they design a security system that renders them useless or not use them

I’ve got an idea….put them in a secure location!!!
The first was stolen from some guy’s house (still trying to figure out why anyone would need that info on a computer that was leaving a base or intel post) and now this one from a recruiting office.
How hard is it to install a deadbolt or rent out a building that has no windows to break in through?

Concern:
If Russia or China “sold missile fuel for north korea missiles” would this violate U.N. resolutions? North Korea has to buy this special fuel from someone, who? This would be a U.N. security violation. Bring this message to NSA, or CIA, DIA attention.

The people who had the laptops stolen know about the physical security aspect of the incident – someone did not do their job correctly, and should be getting to know NCIS (Naval Criminal Investigative Service) about now.
Stopping the use of laptops in Govt use is kinda like stopping a leak in a very large dyke with your pinky finger. Not going to work. They are out there (laptops) and eventually, something else will replace them.
If the people who secure these devices knew what they were doing, the laptops would be as secure as Ft. Knox.
There is technology to effectively “Kill” the electronics (Hard Drive) of most any piece of computing equipment, but they will not make use of it.
Why? your guess is as good as mine.
Might have something to do with the fact that hackers usually create the very things that wind up securing our electronic infrastructure.
Govt does not like hackers.
Ergo, back to square one…
