Authorities Warning Women Not to Wear Gel Bras As Worries of Possible Female Bombers Increase

U.S. authorities are advising women not to wear gel bras on airplanes as information developed in the foiled London plot points to an expanding role for women in smuggling explosives on to an aircraft. Authorities at Scotland Yard are questioning a husband and wife, suspects in the London terror plot, about allegations that they were planning to use their baby’s bottle to hide a liquid bomb. Police in the U.K. have recovered baby bottles containing peroxide, including some with false bottoms, from a recycling center close to the homes of some of the arrested suspects. The use of female suicide bombers has been successful in previous airplane attacks. When two airplanes went down within minutes of each other in Russia in 2004, officials immediately suspected a terrorist connection. It was later learned that the two suicide bombers were Chechen women. They had both been detained in the airport before boarding their flights but managed to convince airline officials using a little cash and charm to let them on board. Ninety people were killed. "Black Widows," as they are called by the Russian media, are Chechen women who kill themselves to avenge the deaths of their husbands or other male family members. There are numerous other examples of the use of female operatives in terrorist operations. Two women with explosive belts were among the hostage takers during the siege of a middle school in Beslan, Russia. Over 300 people were killed; half of them were children. A woman had planned to blow herself up with her husband in an attack at a wedding in a hotel in Amman, Jordan last year that killed over 50 people. His explosive belt worked, while hers did not. Maddy Sauer contributed to this report.

First it’s mascara, now it’s gel bras? Are you kidding me?!? If this is the way it’s going to be from now on, the terrorists have already won the “war.” This country should not be reacting to every terrorist plot or scare – we should be on the offense. It’s ridiculous to confiscate a bottle of water from an 80-year-old african-american grandmother and make her take off her shoes when all terrorists are Muslim! As the wise and wonderful Jay Severin says, “not all Muslims are terrorists, but all terrorists are Muslim!” I’m all for racial profiling to help keep our air travel safe (and wise).

I can see this new rule triggering a new wave of patriotic young male volunteers willing to risk all to protect the country in the dangerous game of breast inspection.

Mam…..err is that a gel filled bra you are wearing? May I inspect? Get the hell out of my way….I’m going to check for myself!

What’s next ladies, we can’t be on our periods when we get on a plane cos they’ll be banning sanitary pads and tampons, you just watch.

“not all Muslims are terrorists, but all terrorists are Muslim!”
Really? Was the Oklahoma City bombing committed by a Muslim? How about the attacks on abortion clinics?

Did you forget about Timothy McVeigh?

I can’t help but think that this level of security is going to hurt the airline industry as a whole.

Posted by: ds | August 16, 2006, 1:18 pm 1:18 pm

This is just ridiculous! If you can fashion a weapon out of the materials in your bra then let’s face it – anything can become a weapon. Stop the terrorists before they get to the airport. Stop persecuting people who just want to travel comfortably. This stuff is going to kill the airline industry for good and worsen our economy.

I am a Palestinian. You Americans dont seem to understand the root causes of the conflict between the west and Islam. The picture is not as naive and ridicolus as your president tries to paint for you. All this conflict is not just beacuse we are “freedom hater” who oppose your style of living. That is ridicolus. How is a man living in a cave in Afganistan offended by the way an Amircan family lives thousands of miles away !
The root causes that your president struggle to hide from you is the the unfair and unjust American policies in the middle east by providing total support for Israel. You Americans grieve about 9/11, we at the Arab world have had our 9/11 in palestine where 4000 people were killed by Israel at least 50% children. We have had our 9/11 in Lebanon where 1000 civilians mostly children, have been killed last month. We have had our 9/11 in Iraq where, according to your president, 30000 civilians have been killed since the war broke out. These are the main causes of what you call terrorism.

Somw women have been going without make-up and bras for years. So why scream now? I don’t mind being screened as long as it keeps me safe. And I don’t believe all terrorists are Muslims either.

Folks…it’s just a bra. A vane attempt at looking better. By no means a necessity on a plane. Let’s get real. If some crazy woman blows up a plane with her gel bra…everyone would be screaming “Why didn’t the FBI, CIA, all the people who are paid to anticipate this – think about gel bras?!?!” – This just means that women have to resort back to good old fashioned padding.

Posted by: JL | August 16, 2006, 1:44 pm 1:44 pm

It’s rather funny… we should be pro-active and profile and chase terrorists! But when a country does this very same thing we condemn them and force a “peace treaty” on them to stop.
The United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon has been in place since 1978 and still not “peace”.
The UN in Cyprus is a bigger joke… there are serving military members with the UN who are second and in some cases third generation Peace Keepers in Cyprus.
What does it take to get it right? Dispand the UN and let countries defend themselves.

Are we checking the guys to see if they are wearing gel jock straps? This is absolutely ridiculous. Soon we will all be flying naked.

Posted by: PS | August 16, 2006, 1:47 pm 1:47 pm

Why do people awalys have to complain? If you are going to complain about how you can’t wear your bra’s would you rather have the plane riding on get blown up? People complain and complain to the people trying to keep them safe and did anyone ever think that mabye if the country as a whole was more understanding of muslims and other religons the world would’nt hate us and people would’nt be trying to kill us daily? To make a long story short why can’t we all just get along?

Posted by: Mike | August 16, 2006, 1:47 pm 1:47 pm

I am wondering how they can tell if you are wearing a gel bra or not anyway. Honestly they look the same as a padded bra and how do you know if that’s not just her size. So next are they going to tell women they can’t wear bras at all. Oh my goodness that would be scarry….. More men would travel that’s for sure, just for the show. :0) I don’t think that the terrorists have won and I am thankful that they are trying to protect us, but honestly… The person just b/f said it correctly. Anything can become a weapon.

Posted by: Lucinda | August 16, 2006, 1:51 pm 1:51 pm

It’s nice to know people have the freedom to type without education. BLu, even if what you posted was remotely accurate, Muslims are people who practice a particular religion and not an ethnicity. People from the United States, Middle East, Indonesia, Europe, etc. are Muslim. How do you plan to pick them out again?????

All the complaints about security measures, and yet, if America sends troops to Afghanistan or Iraq to fight these terrorists, America is always considered the “bad guy”.

Posted by: JFM | August 16, 2006, 1:54 pm 1:54 pm

I know… it’s amusing and funny. Gel bras, of all things. But one little, laughable, step at a time we embrace the “comfort” of a nice, secure, police state.
Our phones, purchases, browser searches, and e-mails are monitored AND now you can’t wear gel bras. It’s just a funny little step…

Posted by: Tommy | August 16, 2006, 1:56 pm 1:56 pm

Wake up America. The govt knew since 1994 that binary liquid bombs were a possibility and there were no liquid restrictions for 12 years. Why? Because you are being played and conditioned. Wake up. Next your speech will be limited. Then you will be searched for liquids at police state check lanes. Speak out now.

Sooner or later, a terrorist will pack his rectum with C4 then go to the lavatory and try and blow up the plane. It will then come down to everyone having a rectal exam before boarding a plane. This is getting way ridiculous! With all the new security measures it will definitely damage the already economically fragile airline industry.

This is getting way out of hand. Panicking and creating mass hysteria is not the way to prevent terrorism. Everyone needs to CALM DOWN. Banning things on flights isn’t going to deter an extremist–there will always be a way. You think that with the technology today, a baby or water bottle, mascara or gel bra is the only threat? What about eyeglasses? Pacemakers? Jewelry? Where does the paranoia stop? *slaps face and grabs shoulders* Get a hold of yourselves!

“All terrorists are Mulsims.” Let’s see here. Timothy McVeigh- not. Certain elements of the Basque Separatist Movement – not.
The last 35 to 40 years has seen a lot of terrorism around thw world…ever hear of those Bader Mienhof characters?
Maybe to most Americans, terrorism doesn’t matter at all if it’s directed against someone else. Perhaps that is why the majority of Americans are neither psychology nor phyically prepared.

Posted by: Gus | August 16, 2006, 2:13 pm 2:13 pm

In reference to the Timothy McViegh and the other things that were referred to, yes, there are crazy people that want to murder for various reasons. You will have that anywhere. But how often do things like that happen? Terrorism is an on going thing every day of our lives and it will be until the end of time.

What about gel breast impants? A suicide female bomber could have her breasts enalrged with gel implants that contain an explosive.
She find some way of setting herself off. And depending upon the size of the impalnts, the explosion could be quite powerful. But how does one control for bombs-in-boobs? Hoow do security people tell if the woman’s breasts are real or have gel filled implants?

I just got back from traveling in the US with my daughter – she’s 4 years old and the size of a 6 year old. They threw out her juice and dumped her sippy cups of mlk. Can you believe this?? Then the TSA got a nice glimpse with the rest of the line of the feminine products I was carrying. THEN, a love note in my luggage from Memphis to Mobile. Then on the way back, my diaper bag was searched, publicly. I’d like to see the look on the TSA people’s kids faces when they’re standing in line and the TSA throws THEIR milk and juice out and the kid cries. It’s heartbreaking. NO CHILD deserves to be treated like that. This is way out of hand. Because my 4 year old COULD BE MacGyver, right??

For terrorists, the concept of explosive laden bras is genius! I’m surprised they hadn’t thought of it sooner. Us too for that matter. Having to screen passengers for explosive gel bras would be time consuming and embarrassing, and I don’t think the airports really want the grief that’ll come with it.

I am sure there are a lot of American people who feel as I do that it is time to completely stop flying and let my money power convinence the authorities that removal of our Civil Liberities (including the right to choose what type of cloting we wear)is outrageous as well as a violation of our Constutional rights.

Maybe we need to start supporting our president and the war and let our military do their jobs! Then maybe we can go to the airport and not have to worry about all this stuff. Until then people need to stop complaining and start helping out, pack all the stuff in your checked luggage and take aboard only what is absolutely needed. Maybe if we all help out flying would be more comfortable, and SAFE!

Lets see if I’ve got this right. Timothy McVeigh (caught and put to death) and abortion facilities attacks equals the murderous attacks by Muslims that in one instance killed 3,000 Americans , who also video taped the slicing method of be-heading of innocent people in the name of their god. I guess according to your comparison we should be using security at airports looking for possible abortion bombers and potential Timothy McVeighs’. Give me a break.

I am glad they are checking people like they are. If you dont want to go through security to save your life then dont get an airline ticket. I would rather have them inspect everything and be safe. These terrorists are getting smarter and we need to be more on guard. It is not only Muslim people who are terrorists.

Hmmmm… “not all Muslims are terrorists, but all terrorists are Muslim!” Wow guess Oaklahoma was really done by Muslims and not a bunch of white males. All the Black Panthers were Muslims, as were the S.L.A. (Patty Hearst)? The list goes on, it is not only Muslims that are terrorist.

Posted by: GAM | August 16, 2006, 3:18 pm 3:18 pm

I hearby volunteer to personally inspect every bra! ;> Seriously though, let’s quit letting the terrorists win and start aggressively rooting them out. Start by putting all terrorist supporters on notice that we will not only freeze any available assets, but that we will bomb them into a sheet of glass if we find them supporting those attacking us. Ghengis Khan knew how to fight a war, perhaps we’ve forgotten or gotten too soft.

Posted by: Steve | August 16, 2006, 3:19 pm 3:19 pm

To Blu,
You are saying that we should look for muslims. I must disagree, as I believe you are referring to Arabs. The largest population of Muslims aren’t Arab at all but Indonesian.
Next, if you think they can’t get people who aren’t Arab to complete these terrorist attacks, you are only kidding yourself. Racial profiling is a slippery slope that is a knee jerk reaction to fear. We all wish that bad guys wore black and good guys wore white, but that is not the case. I know it makes people feel safer to be able to easily identify terrorists (i.e. they are all Arabs) however, this is not the case. A terrorist can be anyone. Timmothy McVeigh anyone.

Posted by: DC | August 16, 2006, 3:20 pm 3:20 pm

I don’t want to be blown-up, but I would like to be able to comfortable on a plane, with whatever I need. And while I don’t believe that all Muslims are terrorists or evil, I’m inclined to give a second look to those of Middle Eastern descent. I’m not saying it’s right, but racial profiling is a must. However, I did remind a relative of mine about the Oklahoma bombing and the white American male responsible. I know that anybody is capable of being a killer, and that we need to look at everyone. And isn’t that what the security at airports is doing? I believe that white Americans, as well as Arab-Americans, are subject to the same baggage rules onboard airlines.

Posted by: Vix | August 16, 2006, 3:32 pm 3:32 pm

Hey, how about batteries. I work in the “battery” field and for past ten years it was known (and tested) that batteries can be very explosive… We should not allow any electrical / battery powered devices

Posted by: jerry | August 16, 2006, 3:32 pm 3:32 pm

As we have seen, the terrorist’s values on life (regardless of ethnic group) encourage them to sacrifice their own for the sake of their cause. Why then should we think they would stop at explosive gel bras? If one is going to die for the cause anyway, why would they not consider explosive gel breast implants (augmentation)? How in the world could the TSA prevent carnage in the air should such concealment become an operational alternative? Where does all this madness end?

Posted by: RG | August 16, 2006, 3:35 pm 3:35 pm

I’d like to see someone try to blow up a flight that I’m on after I’ve been waiting to board for three hours and strip searched and allowed no carry ons, etc, etc…. Be real, alot of ticked off people would be fighting back… if they aren’t then we’re really in trouble. Don’t look for a terrorist on an airplane, look for them in White House.

Posted by: James price | August 16, 2006, 3:46 pm 3:46 pm

From what I hear, El Al does do religious profiling, interviews each passenger individually, and passes all luggage through a decompression chamber. Whatever you think of it, it clearly works.
It’s an unfortunate reality. You will have to watch out for the occasional terrorist that doesn’t fit the profile (ex: the terrorist’s wife), but give me a break: terrorism attacking the US airlines ALL comes from the Islamic world. And when was the last time you heard of a right-wing white supremacist group hijacking a plane? It’s not the US’s problem what the statistics are because we are not creating them.
We have angered many Islamic countries over the course of decades, have we not? People can’t constantly state that they support our destruction while simultaneously claiming that the actual incidents of Islamic terrorism against us are actually plots created by Mossad. (uh…syrian man tries to put his pregnant wife on an el-al plane with a bomb…for Israel? if you believe that then you will believe anything at all.)
If El Al can manage to fly for decades without major incidents (and you KNOW that more terrorists have tried something against El Al than any other airline), then we should be asking ourselves why are we misallocating our time against non-threats.

Posted by: rjf | August 16, 2006, 3:48 pm 3:48 pm

Well, you people have certianly beat this one to death. Any more ideas and they could write a book on possible ways to create a liguid bomb and smuggle it onboard. Well, what stop someone from filling up a pair of silicon breast implants? Will that be banned. I’m all for safety measurements in airports, however, I do think asking a female to take a sip of breast milk to get it on a plane is a little too much.

Correct me if I am wrong, but isn’t there cars that people can drive to get where they are going? Not only that but isn’t there also buses and trains? As for going overseas, there is a new kind of transportation. It is call a ship. If you do not want to apply by the rules of the airport, you have a bus, car, train or ship to travel with. Think about it!!

There is now way such restrictions will ever make you safe. If you ban gel bras they can use gel breast implants. If you strip search everyone, including all cavities, gel packets could be surgically implanted.
The only solution – work for justice, so that disenfranchised people do not choose this option.
Or as Benjamin Franklin said ” Those who would trade liberty for a little security deserve neither”

This is just another ruse to make flying a hassle so that *ordinary* people fly less. it started with Richard Reid, who I think was a government plant played by an actor. Look what resulted, the govt getting everyone to take off their shoes.
If someone were truly determined to blow up a plane, they’d store the explosive in their body (swallowed, or inserted up their butts) and detonate it or put it on a timer. After all, they know they will die anyway.

Where do you folks think profiling comes from…? Someones imagination… NOT… it comes from watching who does what… if you look like a terrorist, then clean up your act otherwise, suffer the consequences! It’s your choice and it’s your fault if you don’t pay attention to what is going on here. People are killing each other because of hate. Profiling is a simple means to an end!

Right this way folks. Through the scanner.Ahh whats that Mr Passenger you trying to bring a book into the USS of A. You communist. All books are banned here. Take him away …….
Meanwhile in UK……
People where not allowed to bring any fluids / canisters on board plans for fear of binary explosives. But they all asked to dump them into disposal bins ……….. so if there where explosives in any of bottles any potential explosion would happen in the airport rather than on a plan …….
hmmm who thought of this way of great idea of disposal ?

in january, i was forced to remove my nipple piercings before boarding a flight in denver. even though i was being inspected by a female, the guard refused me the option of showing the piercings, despite the fact that there was an empty examination room. i was told to remove them or i would be removed from the airport. i eventually complied. once the jewelry was out, they did not even inspect it. the entire experience was extremely violating and pointless.

Its amazing to see the arrogance of Americans. To state that “not all Muslims are terrorists, but all terrorists are Muslim” is a gross example of your sheer and utter hatred for everything other than yourselves. For the country that has the highest murder rate, violent crimes and gun-related crimes etc… in the western world, what gives you the inherent right to dictate what others in the world should be doing. It is no wonder that the world looks upon the US as “ugly (fat) Americans.” I have never had a desire to visit your toilet of a country, nor will I ever have a desire to.

What do you think about the racism card being played when all terrorists are muslim and not all muslims are terrorists is being called. I think that the UK and american public have been treated to enough of the problem for now. Someone on one of the chat lines said it was a matter fo time before someone swallows a safe with a liquid in it and goes on a plane. What next ban all photographic equipment?

Like so many other facts presented by the authorities, here’s one that just doesn’t ring true. Why would terrorists trying to discard evidence–peroxide-filled baby bottles with fake bottoms–bother to be environmentally conscious and put them in recycling bins, which must be sorted by hand for processing? That makes no sense! If I were throwing away evidence to hide it, I’d place it in a refuse container with a bag that would be tied up and never opened again. These little details really make me wonder whether we are being spun by two governments that are desperate for some good terror news to keep their electorates in line.

Posted by: newsdoctor | August 16, 2006, 6:11 pm 6:11 pm

This is all ridiculous people. You are more likely to die in your car than by a terrorist (look at the facts and statistics). Stop letting the media & our current government scare you. Stop letting our government create these “wars” on everything. War on terror, war on drugs… it is a joke… and a terribly expensive waste of your tax money only to control your life. There are much better uses of our money (schools, public health care, etc) and it is not keeping you safer. If it is, tell me this, how would would I be stopped at the airport if I taped a ziplock bag of liquid to my thigh when they take away my bottle of juice before I go through the security?? It is all a smokescreen to scare you. Wake Up… please before it’s too late.

I just LOVE the argument that it’s all Israel’s and our support of Israel’s fault. Let’s see, there are about 13 million (I’m guessing here) Israelis and about a billion Muslims in the Middle and Far East. Yep, Israel is the problem.
Wait, maybe it’s the fact that most of these people live under lousy governments that deny them freedoms, propagandize them to death, and provide horrible education to their children to teach them to hate instead of tolerate. No, that’s too obvious. It’s the Jews and Crusaders.
There hasn’t been a bigger lie sold to so many people since Hitler did it in Germany.

Posted by: Realistic | August 16, 2006, 6:35 pm 6:35 pm

To those who would trade liberty for security: You are cowards, unworthy of our founding fathers sacrifices. In case this is not clear, a brave people stand up and risk death for their freedom and rights, they do not cower behind the cloak of security as they watch their rights and freedoms taken away one after the other.
To those that think this can be solved by profiling Muslims (read: Arabs): Terrorists come in all shapes, sizes, colors and creeds. Just ask the Irish.
I’ll bet most people aren’t aware that a lot of the terrorist violence in the middle east between Israel and Palestine was, on the Palestinian side, by Christians. It wasn’t until about 1986 that Hamas began to replace the Christians in that role.
There are a few rational voices that see the coming police state. The rest of you don’t deserve to be called Americans, you’re all nothing but scared sheep.

Well I thought I survived the aftermath of 9/11 (being employed in the airline industry) but I can see the light at the end of tunnel for the airlines and in all probability, my job. If I can’t wear my combat mascara, lipstick, underwire bra and take with me with hair gel, hand lotion, toothpaste, perfume, etc., I’m not flying. I can only imagine how the flying public feels. These draconian security measures are meant to enslave us – and no, I don’t buy “this is for your own good” BS. What’s next? Micro-chips “for our own good?” Whoa. It’s too late for America to wake up. Go back to sleep. It’s all over except the crying – which will come soon enough.

Firstly, muslim does not necessarily mean terrorist; terrorist does not necessarily mean muslim. Think of Ireland in the bad days… I don’t think the terrorist there had a single muslim onboard.
Secondly, we must not allow this issue to become racially dividing – remember the 60′s in the US.. black & white. Are we not glad those dreadful days are over… Or would you still ask who that life saving heart you may so desparately need some day comes from?
Thirdly, I have to say that whoever the terrorists are have already one. Our society has changed. Our liberties are much fewer, and getting fewer. The powers that be are getting more powerful. Being killed in a terrorist act is a 1 in a million chance.. dying in a car smash is only 1 in a few hundred. Why fear they mad people and give up our lives (freedom) to them ‘cos thats what is happening.
Finally, some talk of a police state. Others talk of better safe in the air than sorry. But then, the ultimate danger is indeed a police state (or worse), should we also not be making sure that we don’t slowly go that route and then suddenly one day realise what we have let happen? what is that old saying ‘keep your friends close, keep your enemies closer’.. does that also work for watch you enemies closely, but watch those with ultimate power over you even closer?
Good luck to all; all religions, all races. Remember this, life is a terminal medical condition – none of us get out of it alive anyway – enjoy life, don’t fear it.

Palestinians would have you believe all this terrorism is from Americans supporting Israel. What Nonsense. The Bombay bombings were against Indians, the Bali bombings were against International infidels of all nations, the bombings in Indonesia are in a country that condemned American policy in Iraq; Muslim terror plots are being foiled in France and Germany, two countries that did not support the Iraq war nor did they side with Israel.
So let’s stop the nonsense. Muslims living in a cave in Afghanistan are indeed offended by the way Americans live. Listen to what the Imams are broadcasting all over al-Jazeera.
Palestinians would have you believe that if it were not for Israel the whole of the Muslim world would be peaceful; yet there are over a thousand Muslim attacks against infidels every year of which have nothing to do with Israel or American policies in the mid-east. Go sell that story somewhere else.
Nothing personal.
BTW, this is not an attack against Arabs because not all Arabs are Muslim. .

Lockerbie bombing: adolescent Scot given free boom box. Previous attempt: pregnant Irish girlfriend wearing bomb. Where there is a will, there will be a way.
Perhaps the ‘no carry-on’ rule is just more efforts by the airlines to restrict weight and sell stuff. They have already stopped everything but free beverage service and now they can start charging us for water on the plane. If toothpaste and gels are out, are those little Listerine strips out as well?

I was amazed to see the anti-American comments on here. To complain about our arrogance and how wherever you live thinks of their country as better is being arrogant!
Because one person makes a racist comment or because crime rates are high or because of a decision our president makes, even, does not give you the right to judge all Americans in any way. Perhaps the general attitude of Americans seems one way, but each American is an individual. It makes no sense to judge Americans for a stereotypical comment, because in that very act, you are being stereotypical!
Disagree with the acts of the government, or the general trends in the United States. But don’t judge all Americans by what you see.
And by the way– banning gel bras is getting a little ridiculous, in my opinion, but I’d rather be safe than sorry. That said, I wonder how they’ll go about checking this…

This is how silly it has become and what the future may hold:
1) When my friend flew (under these new restrictions), she put a babby chew toy (containing visible liquid) in her “special services” luggage. This chew toy also had a ball attached to it via a stem. A terrorist could have hidden a detonator or the second liquid of a binary bomb in this ball – and nobody would have known. The security is mostly for show.
2) Narco trafficers have impregnated fabric with heroin, so that clothes become a means of transporting heroin. What will happen when the same is true for explosives and clothes? A balled up jacket might take out a window and depressurize a plane, etc. Will we then have to fly naked?
Yes, I am glad people are worried about my safety. But I feel we have gone too far.
Maybe the answer is SMALLER planes that are less of a tempting target…

All of you people are looking in the wrong direction with respect to terrorism.
The ONLY root cause for this current issue is RELIGION.
That’s it. Just one cause.
As long as Christians, Jews and Muslims exist there will be intolerance and destructive tendencies. Indeed, as long as those three religions have existed, terrorism and conversion by the sword have existed.
That’s history. That’s current events.
The so-called ‘war on terrorism’ isn’t a political struggle. It’s a religiously motivated struggle. Stop lying to yourselves about this and you will come to understand what is really going on in the world.
Yes, politics is mixed in to the various struggles, because that’s what political entities do. But the ROOT CAUSE, the FUNDAMENTAL reason we have terrorism in the world today is that religious nutcases are operating within the belief that their god is better than your god.
Wake up, people. Religion is not the salvation of people. It is the destruction of civilization and we’re watching it play out across the entire world right now.

When a country has nothing to reproach itself, it has nothing to worry about…If the American people are aimed by terrorism; it might be because of wrongful decisions made by their actual and previous governments. The Palestinian commenter is right. Terror attacks against the US is as a directly result of American foreign policy. I live in the Middle East and this is definitely the case. The US gives Israel the bombs to blow Lebanese civlians and civilian infrastructure to bits (and leave around cluster bombs to cause more damage after the cease-fire). While people on both sides are dying, Rice gets up there with her “a cease-fire” won’t help while all of us living under falling bombs are thinking “you damn well better believe a cease-fire will help”. In the end, no “comprehensive agreement” addressing “root causes” were put into place. Give me a break. While the Arab world watches “real news” and sees what Israel does to Arab children and the US backing it up 100%, a lot of anger is building. Israel could not have killed 1000+ civilians and destroyed Lebanon without the help of American bombs. Feeling women up or as one commentor says getting rectal checks is the stupid way to solve this issue. Solve the real “root cause” as Rice likes to put it: a comprehensive peace agreement. Make Israel implement ALL the UN resolutions that it has ignored with agreement from the US.

To the person who said that the EL Al system is so great: Very few Arabs fly on that airline. Why? Because they are racist. Check my religion? Yes. I am an atheist, but because that is not on their list, I am Christian to them. They not only profile if you are non-jewish, but they also treat you like scum after you’ve passed all their interrogations and searches. I will never fly on El Al after my experiences with them (and I’m not Arabic). It was definitly the worst flight I have ever had in my life and I have travelled all over the world. No, I would not want to see American airlines take this tactic to “keep us safe”. Think about it. If the “terrorists” want to get us they can easily cause more damage blowing up unprotected chemical plants or shipping stuff through our ports whose security functions have been outsourced to different countries.

I am not from the US or England and I definately will not be traveling there for vacation anytime soon. I go for holiday to relax, not have my underwear inspected by overzealous security gaurds. Unless the United States and UK can survive without airplane travel/tourism/ and business meetings they have lost this war on terror. That’s it, people will not fly naked and it won’t be long before explosives are made from cloth (if it is not already invented). And as for racial profiling, muslims encompass 1 billion people from around the world blond to black to chinese so it might be hard to identify them.

>> Did you forget about Timothy McVeigh?
Timothy McVeigh was not a terrorist. He was a misguided patriot. Had he bombed the IRS, we might have become a national hero,
Terrorists attack targets to foment terror in the general population. McVeigh wasn’t trying to “terrorize” anyone. McVeigh attacked the federal building as a response to the federally-sponosred execution of American citizens by the FBI and BATF. His sin wasn’t in fighting against a government that has become unconstitutionally oppressive. His mistake was picking the wrong target, one that lacked symbolism that the People could identify.
Blowing up a building doesn’t automatically make one a terrorist any more than other forms of violent revolution against government. Recall that this Country was founded in violent revolution! Had Britain won the American War for Independence, the British would no doubt have executed the most notorious “terrorists”… George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Ben Franklin, Patrick Henry, Thomas Paine…

The wisest comments I have read here are careful to point out that Islam is a religion–with an associated ideology–and sects of these individuals have chosen violent behaviors. They are only a minority of those who choose terrorism as a means of interacting with society. As Americans, we should be above the easy answer of racist commentaary.
Why are we unwilling to view the political issues discussed here more through the lense of economics than race politics?
If, as Americans, we are willing to admit we have dabbled in overseas politics to further our interests, and we justified in this behavior, we are allowed to agree with the wars, and airline precautions, and we may better understand the terrorist responses. (Not agree with them, at all, but understand them). If we do not agree with some of this dabbling, then maybe we will better understand Mid-East politics a little better.
This silly airline/bra issue just one symptom of bigger issues. If you want to go to a night-club in Jerusalem, you may be a bit happier to see precautions taken….

Posted by: ac | August 17, 2006, 3:30 pm 3:30 pm

Waterfowl – they point is these restrictions are NOT KEEPING ANYONE SAFE. If the government was serious about fighting terrorism versus telling me what bra to wear they woudl install the machinery (which exists) that actual detects this stuff. Oh, and they would screen airplane cargo -which they curently do not do to more than 20% of each load.
You are a sheep. Baa.

Posted by: Sanity | August 17, 2006, 3:32 pm 3:32 pm

It would be wise to remember that the same people who would stop you from bringing water or wearing a gel bra on an airplane may be back next year to complain about a book, or even a TV programme. If you can be told what you can wear, then it follows that you can be told what to say or think. Defend your constitutionally-protected rights. No one else will do it for you. Thank you.

Posted by: sambo | August 17, 2006, 3:36 pm 3:36 pm

The constitution doesn’t say you have the right to drink water either, but we all must do so to continue living.
I will fly when I must, but this is all for show and not for genuine security. We need more of the walk-through puffers and the other new technologies which are much more effective at detecting explosives.

Posted by: Mike | August 17, 2006, 4:19 pm 4:19 pm

You couldn’t have breast implants filled with explosives. I know people keep trotting that out because it’s a funny mental image, but there is no way you could siphon fluid out of your surgically inserted implant in time to make a bomb.
There are, however, machines that can pick out liquid bombs by consistency of the liquid. You won’t find them in airports, but there are several at the White House. Follow the money trail. What is more important, a failing war in a middle eastern country far from the epicenter of terrorism(the London bombers were mostly British-born Muslims of Pakistani descent)and tax cuts for Paris Hilton, or making the rest of not dry heave in fear on airplanes?
And I’m anti-racial profilling, but I can assure all of you that small swarthy people like me are getting searched much more vigorously than grandmas and infants. My American Indian mother and I get “randomly searched” every time we fly, while my Polish dad and blonde sister get to breeze on through the metal detectors.

Posted by: emily | August 17, 2006, 4:33 pm 4:33 pm

See this is what is wrong with the world today. From what I concluded from reading some of the racist comments there is still a lot of work to be done here in the United States. Since I have Arab blood in me I should be automatically brought to the side in a airport and checked, I don’t think so. How much good has really come out of us going over to the Middle East? MMMMMMMM…. Well, there were pictures that became available showing U.S. soldiers that are suppose to be helping the cause tormentting captured soldiers, which people would still be in the dark about the whole situation if it wasn’t for the man that presented the information. My favorite part about that is the fact that some people thought that he shouldn’t of brought that information to someone’s attention. So how does it look when the U.S. can’t even go over and do their job right? It seems to me that this drug out process has only had a negative affect on Americans and what were about. I think Bush was on a power trip when he decided to go to Iraq, and the sooner he is out of office the better. Like I have always been taught two wrongs don’t make a right.

Posted by: shannon | August 17, 2006, 4:43 pm 4:43 pm

The Oklahoma City bombing and those at abortion clinics were done by terrorists but NOT BY SUICIDE BOMBERS. Does anyone notice a distinction here? As far as I know, there is only one religion which encourages people to blow themselves up by offering absurd rewards and only one group of people stupid enough to fall for the offer. As far as our constitutional rights, I don’t think the right to use air travel is among them. But we all have the right to stay off airplanes.

Posted by: Myrna Wheeler | August 17, 2006, 4:44 pm 4:44 pm

When you say
“The Palestinian commenter is right. Terror attacks against the US is as a directly result of American foreign policy.”
Does this mean that you believe it is justifiable to kill any American? Many on those planes and in those towers were children who never had the chance to vote for or against Bush yet in the eyes of the terrorist, it’s perfectly acceptable to hold them accountable for the policies of the government they were born under. Was it ok to murder the hundreds of forign nationals also killed on 9/11.
2 wrongs do not make a right and in this case it’s morally reprehensible.

Posted by: soiny norman | August 17, 2006, 4:57 pm 4:57 pm

Having just reviewed all of these comments, I urge everybody to take a deep breath and time-out. For those of us who are Americans, it is important to remember the values upon which this country was established more than two hundred years ago. Liberty, diversity and acceptance of differing views from persons fromother religions and backgrounds are the values I am talking about.
As a military veteran, I have fought for and served this country, but I take issue with those bloggers who condemn or label persons of one religion or another as “terrorists”. Life is not so simple.
The real issue we need to address here is what is causing the strong anti-American sentiment in the Mideast and throughout the world. Following the Persian Gulf War in 1991, soldiers from the United States and other countries involved in liberating Kuwait — Syria, Egypt and others included — were viewed as heroes. I was among them. What went wrong?
Please do not misunderstand: Regardless of religion, ethnic background or nationality, I take serious issue with any person who supports terrorism against civilians — whether they be men, women and children. I do not support Osama bin Laden or any other terrorist. But, we do need to find a way to engage in dialogue and address the underlying core issues.

all of you people getting hysterical over gel bras, maybe you shouldn’t have voted bush into office in the first place. you think he’s making you safer but he’s not. in regards to gel bras, i found the following to be of interest:
Liquid explosive detection systems
are already in place at the White House and the Supreme Court. But they are still not in America’s airports because the Bush administration hasn’t provided TSA with enough funding. “The TSA has not outfitted airports with the devices, in part, because officials have to prioritize where they spend limited dollars, according to Frank Cilluffo, Bush’s former special assistant for homeland security.”

Posted by: eb | August 17, 2006, 5:25 pm 5:25 pm

Think for a while… all major terror operations including 911, 7/7 UK, 311 Madrid, OK City, etc., can be tied to orchestrators within the government, which ties into shadowy intelligence operations, organized crime, secret societies, and the time-honored macchiavellian tactics of ordo ab chaos, divide and conquer, etc., used by those directing the scheme for totalitarian global government. Anti-terror laws are to take away rights of citizens, not to stop terror – criminals will always find a way – cracking down just makes it easier for governments to persecute peaceful dissidents and actually fosters the likelihood of genuine anger and terror attacks against a country. Airport security wouldn’t stop terror if people had plans to do it – right now it seems that all the credible terror threats are managed by agents of the governments – and terror plots get carried out conveniently on Illuminist ritual dates showing who is really behind them. If Americans get wise they will protest for their freedom and remove from public office all the cowards and traitors who support the dismantling of the republic and the rights acknowledged in the US Constitution. Educate yourselves and find out who is disinforming you and why…

Posted by: me | August 17, 2006, 9:01 pm 9:01 pm

I’ve wondered about gel bras/ implants for years being used as potential bomb devices- anything that can be molded or shaped can have explosives worked into the item. I mean what if the shoe ITSELF was the bomb, needing only to make contact with some other so-far unknown substance? Are TSA screeners going to know the difference between a detonator and a pacemaker? And what about…penile implants?

Maybe the nudists have had it right all along. Why not warm the planes and the airports up a bit, and we can leave all of our clothes in our bags to go through as luggage, while we parade down the corridors.
Of course even nude, we all still have those nasty little body cavities, which will undoubtedly have to be searched as well pretty soon. Fly the friendly skies…when you get to checkin, just bend over for a little final inspection, and we’ll be on our way.
Until some moron tries to smuggle a two-liquid bomb onto a plane by swallowing two condoms full of the lethal ingredients and hoping for a propicious failure of the condoms while the plane is in flight.
Then we could dispense with the body cavity searches, and just have full body x-rays of everyone boarding the planes. What’s a little more cancer, between friends?

Because, and let me quote you back to your idiot self, “you will do ANYTHING” to be safe. Right?
As a very wise man named Benjamin Franklin once said (paraphrasing): Since you are willing to give up essential liberties for security, you do NOT deserve NEITHER.

I was talking with friends last week about this very thing: if they weren’t allowing gel insoles, why would they allow women with water/gel bras or gel inserts (lovingly known as ‘chicken filets’).
I wonder if my next prediction will come true – that they’ll have to ban women with breast implants.

Posted by: I told you so | August 18, 2006, 11:21 am 11:21 am

Not all gel bras are for enhancement. Some bras for women with large breasts have gel in the straps so that they are more comfortable. Unfortunately my breasts are large and I am not physically or emotionally comfortable if I am not wearing a bra.
All of this posturing by the TSA and the admin is just to keep everyone scared and in line. It isn’t like anyone just found out about liquid explosives. Why the big deal now?

We are being ruled by a bunch of idiots. While there have been incidents of female bombers — note also another correlate — each of those women were avenging deaths. So when we stomp all over Bagdad and Fallujah and rape, torture and pillage, what do you expect will be the consequence? Rather than pursuing idiotic policies such as banning gel bras, why not try to win the hearts and minds of these people? Why is this sensible policy considered stupid when banning gel bras and baby formula are thought of as sensible? What a wacky and sad world we live in.

As someone who was in NYC on 9/11, I can understand the government’s need to do ANYTHING to protect American lives. As someone who daily walked past the alters that were set up by the families grieving over missing loved ones lost in the Twin Towers, I am appalled that someone wants to punish Americans for public policies that most Americans have no decison in making. Yes, we vote for public officals but we don’t always get the ones we voted for elected! Yes, we support Israel. Yes, we purchase Arab oil but if we and others around the globe didn’t purchase it would Arab governments be as rich today?
I am truly concerned for the airline economy. Are we going to let terrorists from any nation, tell us how to live? Who to support? Where to go? Then why don’t we just hand over the keys to America right now! Stand in line and fly! Support our economy! Don’t let terrorists stop you from doing what is right for our country!
I know it is terrible for a small child to give up their juice box or an elderly person to hand over their water bottle BUT maybe it is time to realize that our world has changed. Maybe its time to realize that we need to secure our borders and make sure that we are safe. And maybe its time to start to train our children that everyone doesn’t like Americans!

Funny – the Wise Jay Severin obviously never heard of Tim McVeigh, who, until 9/11, committd the deadliest terrorist act on American soil.
A self-identified and convinced Christian, no less.
Man, the ignorance sometimes . . .
Oh yeah – and contact the IRA – they must have had a lot of Muslims infiltrate their ranks over the years, along with the Japanese RAF, the German Baader-Meinhof gang, etc. etc.
News to me that all these terrorists were Muslim . . .

Four years ago, my father, pregnant stepmother, and younger sister who was about 5 at the time were “randomly” pulled out of the security line and individually searched. They had to remove their shoes, belts, etc. and my sister had to hand over her little “hello kitty” backpack to be searched. She was hysterically crying the whole time. Things have only gotten worse with security since then. I understand that its necessary and all, but I really think it’s so sad that we live in a world where a five-year old and a pregnant woman is considered a threat and we are now not allowed to bring a bottle of water on the planes. =(

Posted by: donna | August 21, 2006, 12:25 am 12:25 am

Mohamed Amanjk,
I am in complete agreement with you, but there are a few thing that I don’t think the rest of the world understands. We do not all support what our president is doing or has done, also, we the people are not in control of our foreign policies. I had absolutely no idea things like that were happening because of us. I think my president is not a good person, and I am ashamed that he is in office. This is my personal opinion, but it is also a wide spread opinion in America.
Wo do not believe for a second that it is because your people hate freedom, that is a load of crap our president is trying to convince us with.
We mourn because of what seems to us to be an unprovoked attack on civilians. On the most part, we did not have knowledge of the happenings in other parts of the world. However, due to the events of 9/11 and others terrorist-related acts, we have been forced to change our views. Now we too live in fear just as other parts of the world do. I do not think bringing everyone into a state of fear is the answer here. The events of 9/11 were bad, and so are the events you listed, and none of them should have happen. Yet I fail to see the justification for 9/11 because of those other events. In a perfect world, all conflicts would be resolved without violence, and we would be allies and friends, but we do not live in a perfect world. Violence begets violence and thus it escalates and does not end until a conscious effort is made to end it on both sides.
I do not know how this will end, I do not know when. All I hope and pray for is the day all sides can make peace and there is no more fighting or killing on any side. I believe all people should respect and love each other, and all conflicts should happen in a room with paper and voice until a conclusion is reached.
I am afraid that the events of terrorist will throw our society into a civil war and the entire world will suffer. America does not have something against you or your people, and i am ashamed of the bigots and morons that do.
What do these terrorist acts do? What good are they anymore? Everyone knows why it is being done, and it does not kill or hurt those who are in charge, only the innocent suffer. What is the goal of these terrorists? To kill every american? To destroy our government? To cripple our society? To start a world war? To get revenge for the actions of others? It does not make sense and I fear that we are at the mercy of people who are not of sound mind, who fly planes into buildings.

Bombs don’t kill people, people kill people. Seems to me the best solution is to ban people from airplanes!
Actually it wouldn’t surprise me at all if someday we do have to strip naked and change into approved disposable airline wear similar to hospital gowns. Maybe airlines could even sell advertising on it too to help defray the costs. And we’ll probably be ordered to remain seated at all times unless we ring for an escort (probably an armed air marshall) to accompany us to the toilet midflight after our name is checked against some list.
“No one forces anyone to travel by plane. You can always drive, take the bus or take the train. As for going overseas, there is a ship at every seaport.”
Well, actually in today’s world you do pretty much have to fly to get anywhere. Businesses don’t usually allow employees the luxury of 3-5 day train trips cross country from NY to LA. And Amtrak has been cutting back routes and trains and train travel is not always possible.
Even the bus lines are cutting back and still take a long time even if there is a route.
And how many ships sail between – say – Baltimore and London anyway? Or LA and Tokyo? And how frequently? I’d love to see my boss’s expression when I tell him it will take me 2 weeks to get to a meeting in London from LA – a train trip cross country followed by a cruise ship passage to England from who knows where. As far as I know, the only cruise ship that goes transatlantic is the Queen Mary 2 and that is extremely expensive and only departs maybe once a month or even less. Not an option for a business traveler in 2006.
Sorry but in today’s economy flying is vital and is the only reasonable option and yes we are forced to fly. Absolutely.
And is this liquid ban even being enforced? I flew this past weekend and going out, the flight attendants had a black plastic bag at the entrance to the plane for us to toss things into, but no one checked our carryon bags there. And coming back, they didn’t even have the black bag collection point. I could have certainly taken on a dangerous bottle of water had I wanted to. And are flight attendants now being deputized to enforce TSA policies?

So why hasn’t there been ANY attempts to ban liquids on airplanes until now? TEN YEARS later?!

If Hezbollah wouldn’t have invaded Israel and kidnapped the Israeli soldiers, this might not have happened. I especially like how “hard working” the palestinians are. Whe Israel left Gaza a year ago, they lefta lardge green house operation in place. It was a gift left by American Jews for the palestinians to get their economy going. Did they start working ?. No. The jackasses destroyed the greenhouse instead of using it.

IT HAS HAPPENED – a plan to put explosives in breast implants (according to this story)! An Irague sat next to me on a plane and did some odd things, including staring often at my breasts. I then stared back. I have never before been stared at with such hatred. I waited nine months before calling the FBI. Two weeks later after that call, I heard on radio about the plot to use explosives in breast implants on that same airline co. It was hush, hush after that. I guessed that airline didn’t want their name revealed, and I won’t here. I think we should be profiling to a greater extent, and that pasengers should be made aware of who they are traveling with before stepping onto the plane! We were told after in the air,”There are five friendly Iraques traveling with us.” I took down his rent car co after we were on ground, and his cell phone make and reported those. Beware! Oh, and yes, we should know the facts on just what we do to others on this planet and get back the ‘we the people’.

Why racial profiling doesn’t work:
Indonesia and the Sudan are largely Muslim nations
their people are of ethnic groups related to – ASIAN AND BLACK!
obviously these people can be just as easily led to commit acts of terror as their arab brothers
what about former soviet republics south of Russia? what about the Bosniaks? these people are white and they are muslim!
and another thing: these people aren’t stupid, just crazy, they watch tv and understand that having a long beard and other visual cues makes you suspect, they take this into account, its called the CSI effect

There’s no way you can “annihilate” Israel today. I believe given the current conditions, we would settle for creation of two states living quietly with each other and without the savage oppression and aggressiveness being shown by one right now. A lot of country would have to be given back to the Palestinians, but one more time, you cannot “undo” what has by now been completed Imho.
