Eight Tapes, Eight Charges of Conspiracy to Murder
British police are believed to have recovered "martyrdom" videotapes for each of the eight people who were charged today with conspiracy to murder in the alleged plot to blow up U.S.-bound aircraft, according to sources familiar with the case. Three others were charged with less serious offenses, and 11 others remain in custody for further investigation. The BBC reported last week that the tapes were recovered on computers seized during a series of searches. The tapes were recorded by the alleged suicide bombers with the apparent intention they be played after the attacks had been carried out. British police said today they had seized bomb-making equipment and more than 400 computers in 69 searches carried out in the last 10 days.

Your report on this gets to the meat of the story – the “martyrdom” tapes and the hardware – in what ought to be an unremarkable way.
However, it saddens me that your reporting style contrasts so starkly with the astoundingly innuendo-laden New York Times online edition.
At the time of writing, their front page lead on this story reads:
“The decision to press formal charges came after days of growing public skepticism about the extent of the plot”
followed by:
“Warning that Britain faced a “deadly” and “enduring” threat from terrorism, British authorities announced today that 11 of 23 people held in connection with a suspected plot to blow up America-bound planes would be formally charged … ”
And this item’s lead is juxtaposed on the front page with the report on the Britain-Pakistan cricket imbroglio.
Was the supposedly great gray lady always so transparently opinionated?

I couldn’t agree more. All the news that’s fit to print is news that damages Bush. I have to say in all seriousness, what a bunch of losers are Bill Keller & co.

If enough evidence can be found to convict these people beyond a doubt, why not give them enough exlosives to get the job done, tie them together in a remote field and let them obtain the Martyrdom they so badly want?
