Book: CIA Pilots Lived in Luxury Between Kidnappings
CIA pilots who flew kidnapped al Qaeda suspects to secret prisons for severe interrogation sessions stayed at five-star luxury resorts between rendition flights at taxpayers’ expense, according to "Ghost Plane," a new book by journalist Stephen Grey to be published this week. CIA flight crews enjoyed thermal spa treatments, fine dining and luxury accommodations at top Spanish golf and yachting resorts on the vacation island of Majorca, reports Grey. The crew stocked their plane with fine wine, crystal and shrimp cocktails, also at the expense of the U.S. government. "Three bottles of fine Spanish wine, two of Pesquera and an Alion, along with five crystal glasses" on one trip, according to receipts and interviews with former pilots obtained by Grey. THE BLOTTER RECOMMENDS President Bush Reveals the Existence of Secret Prisons Variety of Interrogation Techniques Said To Be Authorized by the CIA Click Here for More of the Brian Ross Page In his book, Grey says the CIA lied to Italian authorities in a secret diplomatic cable to thwart an investigation into the disappearance of "Abu Omar," a suspected al Qaeda member who disappeared off the streets of Milan. Italian authorities were told by the CIA that the missing man may have "traveled to the Balkan region." In fact, the CIA had engineered his kidnapping and apparently sent the cable to cover its tracks, says Grey. Grey says the misleading cable and a surveillance photo of Abu Omar were found on the computer of former Rome CIA Station Chief Robert Seldon Lady, who, along with more than two dozen other Americans, now faces an arrest warrant in Italy for his role in the CIA’s secret rendition flights. The CIA declined to comment.

Well good for them. I hope they enjoyed the wine and meals. After all…they deserve it for taking on such a daring act. I wish we had more wonderful CIA chaps like these guys. They make the world go around. Salute!

What I find so remarkable is that people think no one will find out. I can just imagine someone at the CIA thinking, “okay, we’ll authorize this, lie here, fabricate the truth there, and no one will ever know.”
How can anyone be so naive? And the intelligence community should know better than anyone. Over the next several years, dozens, if not hundreds, of abuses will come to light because it’s the nature of people to talk. And with so much electronic communication (i.e., paper trail), it will only get worse.
I’m not sure if the cause is arrogance or stupidity, although I’m thinking it’s a strong dose of both.

I’m sure this sort of thing has been going on for years in the “secret world” of the CIA. How do you monitor them? Just rely on their honesty to monitor themselves? Get REal!!! We know this is not going to happen. I’m sure there is more going on than what has even been reported. JTravis Marshfield Mo.

Lest someone doubt my facts, this quote is from UPI correspondent Pamela Hess, September 15, 2006:
“Chiarelli said he has lately come to believe that if there is a sectarian civil war in Iraq, the casualties will be far beyond what anyone now expects. He recently visited a 25-year old battlefield in Maysan province bordering Iran where it is said a million troops died during in the Iran-Iraq war.”
“I would just be very, very careful that if we consider the fact that if we’re not successful … the lens we look at and think about the casualties that could occur in that civil war may be totally different than what would really happen, based on recent experiences in this country,” he said.”

The government doesn’t even bother to try to lie anymore. They don’t feel they have to so long as an indifferent Americam public buys into the whole “war on terrorism” lie. Since all the sheep believe in Bush’s god, all the government has to do is, as Delay did in his mugg shot, say that jesus is embodied in the crook and all will be tolerated.
How Odd.

Even at 5 star hotels there is a government rate that is significantly lower than standard rates. Just because they are staying at The Ritz doesn’t mean they are paying a terribly high rate. The 4 star I worked at charged government people less than the Howard Johnson’s standard rate.
Where would you stay if you were given that information?

First, lets remember just because someone published a book, does not make every word or statement in that book the unbiased truth. I am old enough to know that there are 2 sides to every story and somewhere in the middle you will find the truth.
As for any flight crews, even if they are CIA employees they are most likely not fully trained agents, so for them to put their life on the line for our freedom then the least we can is take any and all 1 sided stories with a grain of salt.

Well now, if you were risking your life capturing these VERY unwanted folks don’t you think that a nice meal and bottle of wine would at least ease the stress just a bit? It does not sound like they are getting a hummer at the desk.. And if they are, SO WHAT. Are they doing their jobs? If the people that are so opposed would step up and do this job I would be willing to bet they also would over indulge. Just let these people do their jobs and quite whimpering… All that is going on is an attempt to make your lives safer..Thanks to the brave who perform this service for the United States!!!

My hat is off to the brave men and women. Rhonda Schwartz makes it sound like a cake walk traveling around the globe hunting down these thugs. I can’t imagine more dangerous work in the name of national defense. And let’s not forget, who knows if this information is true? The CIA and the NSA do SECRET stuff, remember? We may never know and we shouldn’t care. These people are doing their jobs, period. SO what if they had a good time here and there. You don’t here about them sleeping in their crew seats or eating MRE’s, or getting shot at. The press only prints what it thinks will be interesting, not important. I’d buy them all a cold beer if they weren’t in some far-off hell-hole kicking the crap out off the bad guys.

So what ? I cannot believe that this is the first that we are hearing of this. Where are they supposed to stay, in dives ? What is wrong with them having wine and dinners and a few ammineties that are paying them back for the time they are away from their families. The CIA does an important job. Let them have a few good bottles of wine.

Let them have what they want; they are at risk; while those fat ass congressmen cash their fat paychecks and wait for their pensions to kick in; and chase little boys around their offices.
And also the fools who steal money and set up contracts to benefit theirselves; while our american soldiers fight and die for nothing.

They’re pilots, not covert agents in the field. They land someplace, a prisoner or 10 are escorted on, they fly, land, go to a hotel.
Meanwhile, C-130, Black Hawk, and other such pilots in the “real world” are sleeping in tents, cleaning dust from everywhere, and seeing action.
Let’s get some priorities here!

Who cares, as long as they got who they needed to they can do whatever they want. Of course we’re going to lie to the Italians…it’s called espionage for a reason.

Ohmigod! To think some poor wealthy individual was deprived of an economy class room at a 5 star resort; because some life-risking patriotic American pilot was trying to unwind after a stressful mission to protect Americans and other free-world citizens. Don’t they know these types of accomodations are reserved for the wealthy who spend their lives trying to protect their own self-worth. The horror…the horror!
Posted by: Larry | October 17, 2006, 2:54 pm 2:54 pm
Where has our nation’s integrity gone? First the CIA kidnappings are illegal. Secondly there are regulations that the CIA agents are not to use first class accommodations & consume expensive drink & food. They have now been found out, so let’s hold them accountable. Using the “everybody does it” excuse is too weak. This information is now public and should be further investigated. Then appropriate action.

Just another Republican problem of no oversite and close the eyes to corruption. If you think this is ok for them to dine on taxpayer money then you should pay for it out of your own check not mine. They hide them overseas to skirt the laws here in this country. How about they send you overseas and interogate you when you get a traffic ticket.

==Let them have what they want; they are at risk; … our american soldiers fight and die for nothing.==
These people were not soldiers and they were really bad spies. They shacked up in pairs for some R&R in a fancy hotel, ran up a huge bill, left lots of evidence behind, did not follow any basic clandestine protocol. They also busted up (out of ignorance) a long-term Italian anti-terrorism investigation of this guy. Their only risk was to get some bad shrimp.
Why do people continue to defend government malfeasance, even in demonstratively agregious cases like this one?
Posted by: Dimitry | October 17, 2006, 3:15 pm 3:15 pm
The excesses of this administration never fail to amaze me. The legality of renditions aside… CIA personnel should have decent accomodations. But luxury is another matter. They should be fiscally responsible. Aren’t we supposed to be in a war? That extra money could be buying equipment for our brave soldiers. If we’re going to splurge on bottles of wine, they should go to our brave men and women on the front lines. I’d rather see them get treated than some CIA pilot who is in no more danger than any other pilot in the sky… unless you consider the fact he’s stocked his plane with wine and is probably flying drunk.

Many of you folks are missing the point. One of you got it, tho. I’m a government employee. The government tells me how much I can spend when I travel. It varies from city to city. The rates are set for each location. Hotels know this. They provide a government rate that usually matches what the government allows. Often, I can stay at very nice hotels at the government rate. Sometimes, I may stay for a higher price, in which case I pay the difference. This is how it works. Period.
Posted by: Jeff | October 17, 2006, 3:35 pm 3:35 pm
Total speculation, but if you are posing as a corporate pilot or airline pilot in a foreign country and want to maintain your cover, do you stay in a rathole in a crummy part of town, or in the better hotel near the airport where other pilots are staying??
Wine? No excuse. I’m guessing some of these guys were contractor pilots and not CIA…and thought they wouldn’t get caught.

Nothing’s too good for parasites like the CIA who lavishly feed off the taxpayer with their classified no-holds barred secret budget, voracious appetite for waste and fraud, and answerable to no-one in particular blase fair attitude. Too bad their 8.5 trillion dollar and growing fast, yet to be born, debtor hosts won’t even know what hit them 20 years from now. How about that for national security? Sure terrorizes the hell out of me.

C’mon, people–if you were violating the Geneva Conventions (we’re talking about torturing people who haven’t even been accused of anything, and have no legal representation), you’d be stressed out, too. These CIA agents were doing truly disgusting things on our behalf. We owe them the most luxurious time-off possible, especially since some of them may face war crime tribunals once this fiasco is over and the world realizes how destructive and un-American we’ve been in the name of “national security.”

I have no problem with these guys eating well and staying at a decent place for the night, luxury or otherwise. I also don’t have any problem with the CIA taking care of a terrorist problem on the streets of Italy, regardless of any Italian investigations that are affected. “Renditions” is a word I haven’t seen in this context before, but if it means terrorists disappear in some kind of extra judicial manner, great.
As for taxpayer money being “wasted”, a waste would be to spend tens of thousands of dollars checking to see if these guys were entitled to a few hundred dollars worth of perks.

The journalist forgets to mention about what happens if the pilots and other agents get caught…they would be tortured and beheaded! These guys have families that also have sacrificed without husbands and fathers for long durations of time.
Why?? So that families here in America can be safe. May G-d bless you!

These pilots are basically stupid. If you’re secretly flying terrorists to secret prisoners, you have a clandestine/covert operation going. That means keeping things secret.
They didn’t do a very good job at it, did they? One of the basic rules that they should have followed is, “don’t bring attention to yourself.” This is basic, first grade stuff.

I conceed that sometimes we stay in some pretty nice places, but a lot of times, hell, MOST of the time, we would beg for the equivelant of a Motel 6 (as mentioned in a prior post) All this article is, is another example of the liberal media machine, trying to provoke a response from the people.

There is a BIG difference between CIA Operatives and CIA PILOTS. The CIA Operatives are the people under cover who take all the risks, where as the CIA Pilots are not that much different than the pilots for the US Marshalls Service who transport federal prisoners from one federal prison to another or to courts.

I don’t know how much wine costs in America, but in Spain, good wine does not have to be expensive. Furthermore, perhaps this is the bargain the CIA struck with these pilots… fly, stay out of trouble, don’t ask questions.. good pay and conditions honoured.

I didnt waste my time reading all these postings, but I read enough to urge me to engage in this retoric. Shame on all of you who think we should give these terrorist any sympathy. Lets not forget, they didnt offer us any sympathy when they blew up the WTC’s. As i remember it they laughed, and bragged about killing more. As far as I am concerned if a prisoner needs to experience a waterboard for a few minutes in order for us to save at least 1 americans life, then I am all for it. As a pilot I would fly for the CIA or any federal agency any time or any day. Whats more when my time finally came I would not only feel proud, but honorable in knowing my actions not only saved american lives, but I was there for my country. God Bless the USA and those that defend her at all cost.
