Close Call in Abuja: Eyewitness to Tragedy
A Nigerian Boeing 737 passenger plane with more than 100 people on board crashed shortly after take off from the Nigerian capital of Abuja today. ABC News correspondent Brian Ross, on assignment in Nigeria, was on the next plane to leave Abuja and saw the burning wreckage as he flew over. "Our flight was the next to take off, directly behind the plane that crashed," said Ross. "Looking out the window I saw a large column of black smoke and burning debris." "Arriving in Lagos, I learned it was what I had feared. Authorities at the airport are telling those who enquire that it was a private carrier, with more than 100 people on board."
