Abramoff Reports to Prison; Officials Focus on Reid, Others

As convicted lobbyist Jack Abramoff reported to federal prison today, a source close to the investigation surrounding his activities told ABC News that Sen. Harry Reid (D-Nev.) was one of the members of Congress Abramoff had allegedly implicated in his cooperation with federal prosecutors. A spokesperson for Reid, elected yesterday as the Senate Majority Leader, said the senator had done nothing illegal or unethical. "We have no idea what Abramoff is telling prosecutors to save his skin, but I do know that these kind of old allegations are completely ridiculous and untrue," Sen. Reid’s spokesman Jim Manley told ABC News.  THE BLOTTER RECOMMENDS Convicted Lobbyist Abramoff Reports to Prison Photos Abramoff Scandal Spins Out of Control Click Here to Check Out Who’s Blowing Hot, Cool and Smoke Today on the Brian Ross Page A source close to the investigation says Abramoff told prosecutors that more than $30,000 in campaign contributions to Reid from Abramoff’s clients "were no accident and were in fact requested by Reid." Abramoff has reportedly claimed the Nevada senator agreed to help him on matters related to Indian gambling.  The Associated Press reported earlier this year that Reid wrote at least four letters helpful to the tribes that had contributed money to his campaign. Reid has denied there was any connection between the letters and the contributions and has said he is a longtime opponent of certain kinds of Indian reservation gambling. The AP reported that Reid acknowledged "routine contacts" with Abramoff’s lobbying partners and intervening to block rival tribal casinos. The AP also reported that Abramoff’s billing records showed extensive contact with Reid’s office over a three-year period in which Reid collected more than $68,000 from Abramoff’s firm, partners and clients. Prosecutors have said that Abramoff’s cooperation is essential to the corruption investigation, but, so far, they have brought only one prosecution against a member of Congress connected to Abramoff, Republican Bob Ney of Ohio, who resigned. The source said prosecutors do not intend to rely solely on Abramoff’s account of events, and his allegations against Reid and others will not necessarily result in criminal charges.    Sources close to the federal investigation say Abramoff has offered testimony about his contacts with "six to eight seriously corrupt Democratic senators" and an ever larger number of Republican members of Congress. In addition to Reid, the sources say Abramoff has been most closely questioned about his contacts with Sen. Conrad Burns (R-Mont.), who was defeated in last week’s election. "Being defeated may have been one of the best things that ever happened to Burns," said a source close to the investigation. "There is much more interest in members of Congress who are still in office," the source said. Burns, who received more than $150,000 in Abramoff-connected campaign contributions, has strongly denied any wrongdoing and returned the money. Sen. Reid has been an outspoken critic of the connections between Abramoff and Republican legislators. In a speech earlier this year, Sen. Reid described it as "a program where the lobbyists paid and the Republican members of Congress played." The Justice Department said it would have no comment on the ongoing Abramoff investigation.

Typical, Rep get nailed, Dems got off

Ooh, you mean the squeaky-clean Dems took money from Abramoff too? By the news coverage before the election, you would’ve thought only the GOP was involved. Funny how that works, isn’t? If evidence emerges of criminal conduct, I guarantee the Dems will ELEVATE that crook through their ranks…that’s the Dem way.

Here’s a surprise… Harry Reid is corrupt. Next you are going to tell me that Sen. Byrd is a racist who was part of the KKK (notice the sarcasm). I say get rid of all of the corrupt members of Congress from ALL parties, not just the Republicans. Wake up America, the Republicans are not the only party with corrupt members. The difference is that when a Republican gets caught, they at least do the right thing and resign.

It will be interesting to see if the media attacks the dirty dems with the same ferocity as they do dirty republicans. Somehow I doubt they will.

Funny how this only seems to be news AFTER the election…..
And they say there is no liberal bias…..yeah, right.

Posted by: Ed Davis | November 15, 2006, 1:49 pm 1:49 pm

That’s funny. News about Harry Reid’s “interesting” land deal was out there weeks before the election. ABC and others determined that it wasn’t important enough to report on. Now that the election is over, this is becoming news. I’m glad ABC and others have no agenda.

Posted by: Jeff Daniels | November 15, 2006, 1:50 pm 1:50 pm

Remember Dems are held to a different, not the same or higher standard…for them to receive bribes and be part of corruption is all acceptible as long as they are perceived as looking out for the working and middle class…

Posted by: Tony | November 15, 2006, 1:51 pm 1:51 pm

The liberal media completely igneored the $1 million Bribe that Reid took from his land developer friend in Las Vegas which did make the news breiefly before the election but was over shadowed by big gay foley’s e-mails in the libturd news. Now it turns out reid was taking big bribes from Abramoff as well.
Maybe Lincoln Jeffords has room in his freezer for Harry’s cash as well.

Isn’t it OBVIOUS?!? Abramoff was/is/and will ALWAYS be a DEMOCRAT!!!! Don’t you get it? He SET UP the Republicans before the elections for the Dems, and now that his New York ass is behind bars he starts naming the Dems who refuse to save him.
Typical shameless Dem move. Nice job America!

Well, when Harry Reid says Abrahamoff is lying, we’re supposed to believe him. But of course if a Republican says it THEY are lying.
And the Dems elected him their leader again, along with their soon to be majority leader in the house Jack Murtha.
The most transparently corrupt congress in history? They put them out front and center now, don’t they. It’s like they’re rubbing it in America’s face now.

If any serving Politician is suspected of having been involved in corrupt practises, that Politician should step down from any committees he / she serves on, so as to allow as speedy an investigation as possible, without seriously disrupting the administration or the workings of Congress.

Of course for every corrupt Democrat taking 100,000 dollars, there are usually ten corrupt Republicans, each taking 1,000,000 dollars.
It is about the average numbers, not about exceptions. On the average, the Democrats are 10 times more ethical than GOP.

It is never good to hear that any of our members of Congress are corrupt, but I’m thankful that the media is finally doing it’s job. I am a Republican and am sicknened by my party’s recent scandals, especially Rep Foley. Harry Reid’s land deal was barely touched on by the media because he was a Democrat. Now that the Dems are in control, the media might just do it’s job. If my party losing the Congress enables reporters to report on both parties, then I am thankful we lost. It is time for an agendaless media and one that holds everyone accountable, not just the party they do not like. Thank you Brian Ross.

I agree, I agree, I agree, however, Republicans have become fat and happy. I gave the NRCC 5k in hopes of them winning. They have gone far away from the days of Gingrich and the “Contract with America”. They re-elected Lott, who is nothing more than a yes/no boy for the Dems. He’s the primary reason Clinton didn’t get removed from office. The Republicans have forgotten their base. America is not to blame for Dems winning. Republicans are.

Maybe, just maybe, someone at ABC will post a message explaining why.

Posted by: Rad | November 15, 2006, 1:59 pm 1:59 pm

Exactly. In fact they take it one step further and instead of resigning, they slander other officials for completely irrelevant reasons and that are completely uninvolved with the same scenario just to pass the blame. But such is politics. We can only pray for the day when we can vote for a person based on their policy and ability to stay true to their word and not for how well they can pass the blame of their mistakes.

Posted by: Poops. | November 15, 2006, 2:01 pm 2:01 pm

Wow, it seams as if this nothing more than a case of the pot calling the kettle black. Reid denies being unethical and all his dealings with Abramoff were on the up and up. Funny how everyone else that knew Jack Abramoff are saying the same thing. What else did you expect from the hypocrites we send to Washington?
I personally think we need to run all them out of town, start over, and form one party – The People for a Better America Party. Yes, I know this runs contrary to our current system, but I do know that most ‘average’ Americans only want what’s best for our country. The only difference being which road we take to get there.
Our current politicians like to say they have the coutry’s best interest in mind. Yea, right! If you believe that, I’ve got a bridge in Brooklyn I’d like to sell you.

Where were you Mr. Ross before the election? Why didn’t you run these stories after the election? Perfect case of a Univ.of Iowa inferiority complex coming through! How come you didn’t tell people before the election about the following:
Foley – Resigned.. for salacious IMs.
It was right he resigned but do a google and see 10,500 results.. yet during the same Mainstream Media bias ing the public about the bad GOP, why not tell people about William Jefferson the Demo who is on tape taking a $100,000 bribe.
Google 805 results.
Or how about Bob Ney GOP RESIGNED
Results 1 – 100 of about 4,400 for Bob Ney. But at the same time, when Ney RESIGNED we still have in office:
Kennedy – drowned girl
Alcee Hastings- impeached Judge for taking Bribes
Murtha – still in office on ABSCAM tapes for bribes.
Franks – having a male prostitution ring running out of his D.C. house still in office.
Studds – now dead but when in office ASSAULTED A 17 YR OLD PAGE and the democrat congress applauded him when he won re-election!
So the point I’m making here is all you’ve done by NOW COMING out with these stories is reinforce my suspicions as well as a lot of other people as evidenced by declining viewer/readers as we are getting our FACTS from less biased sources.
Thanks for putting the integrity and honest of the journalism courses I took at Iowa where we learned “reporters don’t make the news…they report the news” as william Paley said. Please simply tell the truth and not manage the truth.

And no, the justice system has no Liberal bias. But Reality does.

Posted by: Paul | November 15, 2006, 2:07 pm 2:07 pm

A convicted flon says Reid is corrupt because he took campain contributions from Indian groups. Republicans jump at the bait and howl about ‘liberal media bias’ since it was not reported prior to the elections. How utterly predictable.
Well here’s a news flash: Reid took campaign contributions from Indian groups long before Abramoff was in the picture. He was a ranking member of the Indain Affairs committee for years. It is not unusual or unethical for congressmen to get campaign contributions from groups who are directly impacted by that congressperson’s committee assignments.
What is unethical is a quid pro quo arrangement. And there is no evidence of that at all. THAT is a Republican speciality.

Posted by: Crackwhore | November 15, 2006, 2:10 pm 2:10 pm

If Reid is investigated and charged- then he’s on equal footing with the various GOP members who were involved with Abrahamoff. And there is a difference between guys actually charged with breaking the law (the various GOP figures) and an accusation against someone. But if Reid is dirty, he has to go. Corruption is bipartisan and does none of us any good.

Like the profits from developers he forgot to remember the land sold and still recoreded on his Senate Financial statement as his; then collects over a cool million from the developer years later for his mysterious eeal making…Poooor Harry. Umm…okay…help me understand something. Abramoff is a Republican, right? Of course, as a Republican he is going to implicate his fellow Republicans before implicating a Democrat?! You mean to tell me, that if Reid obviously broke the law, it wouldn’t have been dug out by the neo-cons BEFORE the election?! Seriously…this whole Republican-Democrat blind loyalty is getting so old. Do any of you who reply here EVER think an independant thought outside of your party affiliation? Lemmings!

Posted by: Steve | November 15, 2006, 2:13 pm 2:13 pm

Not to excuse ANY corrupt member of our government, but I find it very interesting how ABC continues the attempt to frame Abramoff as a Democrat problem, which is simply laughable. For all those Republican posters who apparently cannot read:
“….six to eight ‘seriously corrupt Democratic senators’ and an ever larger number of Republican members of Congress.”
And an EVEN LARGER NUMBER OF REPUBLICAN MEMBERS. Get it? But funny how we don’t have any of their names, do we. Huh, just a coincidence, I’m sure.
Abramoff was, is, and CONTINUES to be 95% a REPUBLICAN PROBLEM- he’s Tom DeLay’s boy, and was doing exactly what DeLay and the GOP required of him.
Attempting to emphasize Reid’s alleged role in this doesn’t change that fact, sorry ’bout that, Republicans.

Posted by: bob | November 15, 2006, 2:13 pm 2:13 pm

So now the DEMS have Reid – guilty of corrupt land deals, and illegal campaign money. Byrd – ex-KKK. Kennedy – got off for murder. Murtha – Abscam. Bary Franks – Gay protstitution ring in his house. Hillary – Whitewater…and many more. What a leadership group.

Scandal! ABC News is owned by the ABC network, which is owned by Disney. When Americans waste discretionary income on gambling and spend vacation days at casinos instead of theme parks, who loses revenue? DISNEY. This ABC report is simply an attack on the supporters of big gambling by the news-reporting wing of big entertainment. If Mark Foley had suggested a trip to the Magic Kingdom with those pages he so admired, he would still be in office today.

Posted by: Michael | November 15, 2006, 2:14 pm 2:14 pm

All we can hope for is that every one of the politicians that took bribes, including Reid and Murtha, get the same deal Spiro Agnew did, resign immediately or almost certainly go to jail.

Of course there is going to be corrupt Dems. Corruption works on both sides of the aisle, especially to reach that level of politics. Some of them will be pulled into the Abromoff mess as well. It became a Republican problem when Tom Delay insisted on stacking K street lobbying firms with Republicans and the way the Republican majority routinely cut Dems out of the decision making process.

So the corruption free Dems have chosen two “questionable” leaders. One war hero that hires his brother’s consulting firm for DOD projects, one man that made 1 million off property he did not own and has sent many state land deals to his son’s office. Plus one guy that keeps cash in his ice box. Hmm Looks like the least corrupt one is a senator from New York that barely escaped indictment in the travel office scandal. Good thing they are working to clean up corruption in DC!!

Posted by: Tom | November 15, 2006, 2:20 pm 2:20 pm

Poor bob, he and Paul must be drinking the same kool-aid. Abrhamoff is only the one “chosen” of the corrupt lobbyists in DC. Since he seemed to go where the power is/was, the GOP, that is what the MSM touted. Now that Abrhamoff is starting to talk DNC, known for months, it is only the tip of the lobbyist iceberg. If they choose to clean up the rest of the lobbyists. Otherwise their mission, RNC defeat, has been accomplished.

Harry Reid represents strong gambling interests, and his voting record is proof of it. Believe it or not, Las Vegas is in NEVADA. So he worked with Abramoff on Indian Gaming and then requested contributions from them because he represented their interests. If there’s something illegal or unethical about raising money from industries with shared interests, then the entire US Congress needs to be shut down. In reality, Harry Reid did nothing wrong. He didn’t SELL influence. He used natural shared interests to raise campaign $$. I know the public at large doesn’t understand it, but at the moment that’s the overriding principle of American Democracy.
Jack Murtha is a dirty, dirty crook, who sold votes to Republicans in order to get pork for his district. He deserves to get exposed. Go Steny.

The bad news for the Dems is if someone like Obama, Durbin, or Clinton were to be implicated in this.

You decide:
#1 Most corrupt: Senator Conrad Burns ran and lost by a very close margin.
#2 Most Corrupt: Senator Bill Frist had long announced he would not run again
#3 Most Corrupt: Senator Rick Santorum ran and was easily defeated.
#4 Most Corrupt: Rep. Roy Blunt (R-MO) ran and won.
#5 Most Corrupt: Rep. Ken Calvert (R-CA) ran and won.

Oh give us a break that there are 10 times as many corrupt republicans as democrats. The democrat party is the party of corruption – from Tammany Hall to Daly’s Chicago, to frankly every union boss in the nation – the history of democrat corruption makes the republicans look like pikers.

ALL corrupt members of this debacle called “our representative government” need to be exposed and punished post-haste. ALL of them, D, R, or otherwise.

Its time to create a new party that might have a chance at being ethical. Then, or perhaps first, reform campaign financing to public financing AND, more importantly, limit the presidency to a single-term, senators to a single-term, reps to 2 terms, and do not permit transition between congress and lobbying, in either direction.

The penalties for members of congress who accept bribes or take kickbacks should be much stiffer–at the very least, mandatory life in prison and seizure of all personal assets. Corruption can lead to the deaths of innocent people, for example if safety regulations are ignored or if people become despondent and commit suicide, such as in the case of the Keating scandal, so one could argue that the death penalty would be a justifiable punishment as well. That is the only way things will ever improve.

Maybe a poli scientist can do some research on the correlation between personal(family) wealth of senators/congresspeople and corruption scandals – i would hypothesize that it would be low -the intuition being that if you are already rich you dont crave the riches of first class travel and golf vacations.
Only when we drain the entire swamp (not the Nancy Pelosi drain the swamp thing!!), and have lots and lots of people like Tester, Webb, Casey, Feingold, the late Wellstone, Pat Murphy, Sestak etc etc will Congress be truly a body of distinguished people.
Until then we will have fake “clean up the sytemers” like McCain, who if the media has forgotten was involved and pleaded guilty to finacial impropreities as one of the Keating five.

Reid took 30K from one of Abramoff’s PACs and wrote 4 letters that are in the best interest of his state. It is connected to Abramoff only because his clients we trying to stop a competing casino from being built. A Democratic Congress impeaches him while he was a federal judge for bribery. Nancy Pelosi votes to impeach him based on the evidence. He gets off in the Senate and is elected to Congress. Nancy Pelosi is going to make him chairman of the House Intelligence Committee over a well-respected woman such as Jane Harman of California because she tried to be “bipartisan”. The basic problem is not corruption. You have corruption because politicians have their hands on the purse strings of our economy. Take away their ability to regulate the economy, a separation of economy and government, as in a constitional amendment, and you have no incentive for crooks to come into politics. Plus you get no crooks scamming, bribing and blocking economic progress. The only thing government can do is regulate production out of existence so why do we give them the right to do it? We buy their ability to corrupt our government when we believe that they are regulating our economy for our own good. They do it for their own good.

I am a Conservative Republican. I am now shaking my head over our political system . My solution to this crap is to impose term limits to ALL politicians to two terms, and eliminate the current retirement system.
They are all corrupt! All they have to do is spend 10-years in office and they draw $50K-+ per year retirement, and FREE healthcare for themselves’ and family members — at military medical hospitals! Whay is there no outrage over this.
NOBODY should be allowed to spend 10-years in congress, and retirement sould not be paid by taxpayers.
Congressional retirement is the best kept secret in this country. Few American’s know about this system, and it is shamefull!
I am a combat-wounded Vietnam vet. I am very resentful that I have to stand in line BEHIND some Congressman’s 12-year-old daughter to receive treatment.
Also, as a retired military person, I have to pay an annual rete to stay in the medical system — which was promised to me “free” in the recruiter’s office in 1965.
Since then, that has been changed. So here I am — a combat wounded vet that has less priority than a Congressman’s 12-year-old daughter?

It is a Republican conspiracy. They sat on the information with their corrupt crony in case they loss the House and Senate. All this to discredit the Dems. If it had been a bigger deal, Abramoff would have sang prior to the election.

Gee, and to think only Republicans did this.. shocked, SHOCKED I say.

Posted by: Bill | November 15, 2006, 3:12 pm 3:12 pm

Why is it that if a Republican gets caught at illegal or illicit activity they resign.
When a Democrat gets caught at the same thing they stay in office and get a chairmanship IE William Jefferson Louisiana.
When Clinton was impeached he refused to step down unlike his Republican predecessor’s.
How about the Republican( Foley) who got caught with messages to pages he resigned.
When Studds of Massachusetts got caught with an actual affair with a male page how come they gave him a chairmanship.
Could it be the Republicans out class the Democrats or are the Democrats above reproach?
Neither party is worth 2 cents and America needs a third party and term limits on them all.

“an ever larger number of Republican members of Congress” Read the entire article.
Republicans calling Democrats corrupt. Isn’t that something. It wouldn’t have help you in the election. America was ready for a change. Iraq sunk the Republican ship. Power breeds arrogance.

Posted by: Mike | November 15, 2006, 3:14 pm 3:14 pm

You mean he gave more money to Republicans than Democrats? Why that PROVES they are more corrupt than the Democrats!
Oops! Forgot, the Republicans were in charge. Wouldn’t it be pretty stupid of him to give more money to the party OUT OF POWER? Now that the Dems are in charge, lobbyists will be falling over themselves to donate to them. It’s just the Washington way.
But don’t try to play your political games with this. Reid, Murtha, Pelosi, et al are all just as corrupt as any of them caught to date. They just know how to hide it better.
Besides, Rob Ney gets caught with his hand in the cookie jar and the GOP forces him to resign. Jefferson gets caught with $97K IN HIS FREEZER(!) and they stand by him until there is “proof”. Unreal…

Did anyone remember about the $90,000 Cold Cash found in a representatives Freezer? Is that going to be prosecuted.
You know, its time for term limits and getting rid of the retirement accounts given to our our so called government employees who are supposed to serve the people.
And then how about a standing policy whereas any government employee is on administrative leave while being investigated. Then let the law proceed.
Time to clean house completely of everyone in our government. Everybody, and sorry to say, event the good ones.

Hastings, Jefferson, Murtha, Reid,
they are all still in office. The Dems continually used the term “culture of corruption” however anyone who is knowledgable about American history knows that the Dems wrote the book on politcal corruption years ago.

Good luck in ferreting out all of Mr. Reid’s dealings over the years…won’t be easy to crack this machine…..some have reported in the past, ties to the gaming industry…..mafia…..and maybe even the church voting base …..check out land deals in Arizon, Nevada, and Idaho….federal lands…rezoning overnight to make a buck….sons placed in important positions….This investigation could take years and years and years.

Hey ABC your ability to tell the truth is also on trial, these facts prove it.
Drudge is reporting; Preliminary: Senate Ballots cast: 31,591,495 (D) 25,054,569 (R)… combined vote 56.6 million.
Despite the population going over 300 million for the first time ever. 83% of the population is eligible. 23% of eligible participated.
Compare this turnout to say 1994 when total votes cast for Senators was 57,716,000!
Result 12 years later voter turnout was 1.1 million less than 1994. Despite the above mentioned data.
The total expenditures by both parties set a supposed record. ( waiting for final data) The effectivness of those dollars per vote sets a new record low.
While these facts may please the parties, because the less participation the easier it is to engage the largess lever, the parties must know; that they are surrounded by persons who see through the haze of the bought and paid for

Posted by: Dabbny | November 15, 2006, 3:23 pm 3:23 pm

Look, here’s the facts. This report says:
“The source said prosecutors do not intend to rely solely on Abramoff’s account of events, and his allegations against Reid and others will not necessarily result in criminal charges. ”
Where is the cause and effect? It’s not news to anyone that lobbying exists. Mr. Reid comes from a state where gaming is king. It should not suprise anyone that he might have more than a passing interest in gaming related issues. Since indian casinos have allowed gambling to spread out from the confines of Nevada, it would stand to reason that Mr. Reid would be lobbied by and and ultimately support some gambling related issues before the congress. That he took money from some of these interests is not a crime. If it is, we should prosecute texans who took money from oil interests, Iowa and Nebraska are the primary recipients of Ethanol, I wonder if any politicians from those states took any contributions from Ethanol producers?
What everyone forgets is this. Mr. Abramoff was the lead enforcer for something called the K Street Project. It was set up by Tom Delay (R) and it’s stated goal was to force lobbying firms to stop doing business with Democrats and only do business with Republicans. The project created a culture where corruption was tolerated and sometimes actively encouraged. Mr. Reid stood outside that circle. If Mr. Abramoff had something to offer the feds on Mr. Reid, he would not be off the big house right now. The most likely outcome of this investigations is the well-timed leak designed to do damage to Mr. Reid but nothing more. Unlike Mr. Reid, there are several Republicans either already in jail or heading there shortly.

The news media isn’t going to do anything to jeopardize its’ cozy relationship with the Dems…and, sadly, as we’ve seen with Sandy Berger, Reid, et al, the Repubs have nobody…not one…zippo…nada…person who will be bold and speak out against anybody on the other side of the aisle. History will show the Repubs are better when they are in the minority. They had no idea what to do when they were in the majority.

Of course the story broke after the election, the man didn’t enter prison until after the election. If his first day in jail was two weeks ago, this would have been news then and if it were three weeks from now, it would break then. I mean, they’re also talking about the Ohio State-Michigan football game now. It’s because the game is this week and not because it’s the MSM’s payoff to those states for going blue in the elections.

In the land of the corrupt (Washington, D.C.), the self-funded wealthy incumbent is king. (See Kennedy, Kerry, Rockefeller, Kohl, Lautenberg, Corzine, Dodd, Feinstein, et al.) The Senate is becoming the House of Lords (of the Flies).
Wealth comes in handy, too, when hands are caught in tills and a phalanx of defense lawyers is hired.
We’ve come a long way, baby boomers, since Spiro Agnew resigned for taking a $10,000 bribe!

all the cry babies blaming the media for not disclosing this before the elections should be ashamed of yourselves, the facts that reid was involved with abramoff and in shady land deals were made public by the media before the elections, granted most “drive-by” media outlets kept the noise at a minimum on this, however responsible voters should not rely media marquees to gather information to make informed decisions about candidates, assume responsibility for your actions, do your due diligence and become informed before casting your votes.

Why the big surprise? Just another example of why the common man cannot be trusted with the power of the vote.
The Dems know that if you lie enough to the masses they will believe it. The liberal media … like ABC … is their messenger. Report only one side of the story … withhold information … it’s been going on for years.

Posted by: Greg | November 15, 2006, 3:33 pm 3:33 pm

When the issue of who will be elected hangs in the balance, the media tends to close ranks to help the Democrats.
At other times, they try to show they are not biased by “eating their own”.
I sometimes watch NBC nightly news. It is a sure way to find out how the “left” spins the news of the day.

Why would the major networks plot against the Reps? The Reps are the party of tax breaks for the rich, Public Radios funds, and turning FEMA into a joke. Let’s face it New Orleans and the first bombing of Bagdahd were great for the networks. Abramoff’s firm donated more to the Reps than the Dems by more than double. Only makes sense. The Reps were in power. The real crime is your government is for sale, no matter who is in power. Harry Reid’s spokesperson Jim Manley claimed that he had no idea what Abramoff was telling the prosecutors regarding Reid’s alleged involvement in Abramoff’s illegal conduct but what he told told then was “completely ridiculous and untrue”. Say what! I think Reid needs a new spokesperson, perhaps Bill Clinton is available.

Posted by: Richard King | November 15, 2006, 3:59 pm 3:59 pm

Gosh if the trolls aren’t out in force.
If there was any evidence of Democrats accepting money from Abramoff, it would be out already. The investigators already have all his e-mail and papers in hand. There is no credible reason that the investigation would be slowed in any way. It’s very unlikely that Abramoff had dealings with Democrats anyway considering that Abramoff is a long time far right Republican operative who is closely linked to Karl Rove, Tom Delay and Grover Norquist. This story looks and smells like Mark Halperin, ABC News’ political director, delivering on his promise to skew their news coverage to please Conservatives. Who are these alleged “sources” anyway? GOP operatives most likely. If they have any evidence, they should put up or shut up. The right wing Corporate Media loves to use anonymous sources and phrases like “some people say” to pimp their propaganda and Republican talking points. Show us your “evidence” ABC.

Nice how the dems in question weren’t brought up before the election

Posted by: Dave | November 15, 2006, 4:03 pm 4:03 pm

It’s the same non-story that was floated months ago. Here’s the ‘smoking gun’:
Quote: A source close to the investigation says Abramoff told prosecutors that more than $30,000 in campaign contributions to Reid from Abramoff’s clients “were no accident and were in fact requested by Reid.”
Abramoff NEVER gave a penny to ANY Democrat, and that’s a fact. His CLIENTS, those wishing to lobby for this or that piece of legislation, contributed to campaigns of members of both parties, the vast bulk of it going to the Repugs as they were in power, that’s WERE in power, lesser amounts to Dems in a cover-yourself sort of way. It’s mind boggling how reporters don’t separate Abramoff’s clients contributions from Abramoff’s graft. All power players, such as the Tribal Indians, looking to get a bill passed, will donate to both parties. If you lobbied through Abramoff, you’re his client. If you then gave to Reid’s campaign, you’re an Abramoff client who gave to Reid. Big effen deal. The fact that Abramoff took your money and screwed you over doesn’t taint your donation to Reid’s election.

Why are all of the people sending these emails so mad and frustrated? Remember we are a very educated and intelligent group of voters, who elected these BOZO’s, (both Rep. and Dem.) Lets get over it, the American people do not want a change in Washington, we prove it each and every national election cycle. Abramoff had his hooks set in every nook and cranny of government, and in both parties. Get them all, get them now and send them to jail. Anyone who sides with a party on this issue doesn’t appreciate honesty in government and probably supports earmarks as a good business practice of Congress.

what’s with all this cry baby Republican whining about corruption and the MSM’s liberal bias?!
How come Fox News (read: Republican Talking Points) hasn’t been all over this BEFORE or after the election.
If Harry Reid is guilty, if Harry Reid has been acting like the holier than thou hypocrites of the Rethuglican Party, then he should suffer the same consequences.
No one should have a problem with that, but in the meantime, let’s see exactly what this frequent visitor to the Bush White House has on Reid and other Dems.
In the meantime, whining is exactly what one expects from the tough guys of the right when stuff happens, and man has stuff happened to the right!

For the last 25 years, I have maintained that the –
VAST MAJORITY OF AMERICANS SHOULD NOT BE ALLOWED TO VOTE!!!!!
The last election is continued proof of this.
However, this is a good time for the democrats to reinforce their Nam reputation of losing thru surrender.
This will solidify their cowardly, gutless, irresponsible reputation for the coming generations. The election may not have been all bad.

The majority of the comments still are not paying attention to the real issue: Mainstream Media bias!
A lot of the comments are showing the hypocrisy of the Dems “culture of corruption” theme which is true but again, MSM has fostered that.
What is needed is to wait until this generation of MSM (I hate to use the term journalists) are retired as well as the college instructor Woodward/Berstein wannabes who couldn’t do so they taught. They taught this generation that the bad guys were the GOP rather than as William paley said in Clooney’s movie of Ed Murrow..”We report the news, not make the news!”
Guys like Ross graduating from “journalism[phew] schools were taught to make their bones by digging up as much dirt on the GOP as it has always been the misconception the GOP is for the rich guy(just an aside.. most GOP don’t think in terms of zero sum but that the pie is constantly getting bigger..WHICH IT IS!) while the poor old labor union, minimum wage Democratic party(not the old party the current CDC party ) continues with the Marxist myths of capitalism bad..socialism good.
The hope is that now with so many more resources other than the 3 networks, the old newspapers, the truth is getting out. Many of you may not be aware of the fundamentals of journalism which are the five Ws and one H :
Who, What, When, Where, Why and How
which most current “journalists” do not adhere to. They would rather add their personal opinion which was taught them by their biased instructors to do as this recent example shows.
A recent fluff head reporter said about the Pelosi/Bush meeting that and I quote exactly..”Mr. Bush said, with Vice President Dick Cheney sitting glumly on a couch to his left.”
This “sitting glumly” what value is added to the piece other than it does show “how” Cheney sat!
But really what was the purpose of adding that phrase? MSM bias!
Anything, anywhere, anytime, anyone that can make President Bush, our country, the GOP look bad.. MSM will report it!
Ignoring the facts that things are going well in Iraq! How many of you know that the average number of US soldiers killed per month in Iraq is 3/4ths the number killed in the military overall? 63 vs 85!

Okay – It’s one thing to be upset and have opinions on this matter, but it’s another matter entirely to at best spout an unsure conspiracy theory and at worst lie like a man with lipstick on his collar.
Jack Abramoff is an established Republican who votes Republican, donated wholly to Republicans on a personal level and even headed the College Republicans with his partner Grover Norquist. To suggest that he is in any way a Democrat is pure nonsense.
To the rest of you absolutely spitting mad conservatives/Republicans who posted above: Take a deep breath and count to 10. If you find yourself using the Kennedy/Oldsmobile parallel, count to 20 because you really need to take a break.
Right now all this story is about is Reid accepting money from clients of Jack Abramoff. In and of itself there is nothing illegal about this. There are a number of implied dishonest actions, but absolutely nothing concrete. I understand your frustration in the matter but the fact is that it’s just not there. Alternatively, Jack was overtly friendly with Republicans and that’s why they got tagged with this.

I don’t see why so many people are claiming a hidden agenda or post-election reporting on this particular issue (not MSM in general). The ties between Reid and Abramoff were well known before the election, as detailed by the paragraphs that start, “The Associated Press reported earlier this year…” This isn’t new. Further, the amount of coverage on both this and Reid’s (D) suspicious land deal was comparable to Hastert’s (R)suspicious land deal. MSM tilts left, but I don’t see the bias here.
With regards to corruption, it’s clear both parties are brimming with it. I don’t see much difference at all, although the party in power is obviously more likely to be targeted due to that power, and this is what happened to the Republican’s over the past decade. For all their talk of bipartisanship, I already see Pelosi consolidate power in the speaker and majority leader post at the expense of committee chairs, a la Hastert/Delay. Prepare for governing from the left and a painful two years before the Republican districts the Democrats captured this year vote them out in 2008.
With regards to Republicans nobly resigning when accused of corruption, this is laughable. Delay went so far as to change the rules of the Ethic’s committee to avoid punishment, and Ney could have resigned when this first surfaced instead of claiming innocence and resigning only four days before the election when his defeat was clear (and further harming his party by making a story so close to the election). Corruption is a terrible but human fault that strikes regardless of party. In the majority of cases in both parties, the politicians try to hold on until they can’t win reelection, then they resign.
The one interesting difference that I’d like discussion on if possible is if Democrats are more likely to reelect politicians after the corruption is exposed. I’m inclined to believe they are, but I don’t have good data. I suppose that is the penalty of the professed (but in most cases suspect) moral superiority of parts of the Republican base.
Is relief possible in a two party system?

Posted by: Stu | November 15, 2006, 4:29 pm 4:29 pm

Here’s the difference between the two parties.
When the evidence began to mount against President Nixon the Republican leaders went to Nixon and advised him to resign rather then go through an impeachment process so Nixon resigned. But when the evidence mounted against President Clinton what did the Democrat leaders do? Why they circled the wagons and said we aren’t going to let you take our boy down. And the rest is history.

Posted by: Terry Smith | November 15, 2006, 4:29 pm 4:29 pm

No surprise here. This is all part of Karl Rove’s master plan to keep a Republican in the White House come 2008.

I ask that conservatives and Libertarians form a new party together and in the by-laws they will only support a candidate of their party for 3 terms in the house and 2 terms for senate. I’d vote for them in a heart beat. This would insure that candidates who value and support the Constitution are elected and do not become entrenched and give in to the corrupt system that exists there.

Posted by: Gary McKeel | November 15, 2006, 4:35 pm 4:35 pm

There are plenty of members in congress that are corrupt, Republicans and Democrats alike. But, right now the vast majority of corruption belongs to the Republicans in 2 of the 3 federal branches of government, so they are focused upon. The President’s and Vice President’s incompetence and corruption are a major reason why you see congress being “audited” by the media. You Republican fanboys need to relax and read the entire article, as clearly you have not done so.

Posted by: MKR | November 15, 2006, 4:36 pm 4:36 pm

Democrats are not corrupt. They are only looking out for working people. If that means that they have to get funds from ‘unconventional’ sources to keep power, than that’s okay. Money from Unions, other countries, hollywood and rogue billionaires can’t possibly have any quid pro quo attachment, but only the best interests of the country.

For some reason my whole comment wasn’t posted. Here is the last few lines as I didn’t know there was a limit on words!
How many people are killed in the US by car accidents – 3,000 a month. Most of the accidents had no redemming value, i.e. a large share were accidents where people were killed just doing their daily routines. But in Iraq! Our soldiers are killed albeit less then 60 per month, for protecting us from the gangsters that would like to kill 30,000 a month in the US! And all the while the Brian Ross’ of the MSM are telling us how bad it is in Iraq. How dangerous it is.. oh wait.. hmm guess he hasn’t talked like I have with soldiers coming back who like me are totally disgusted that the MSM has prolonged this by giving encouragment to the gangsters.
Yes by writing how bad it’s going the gangsters there know the US boogied out of Vietnam, Mogodishu and will out of Iraq. The more they kill the sooner we are out of there! And then what?
25 million people most of whom love the US soldier will be like sheep.
AND that idiot in Iran will foster the 12th Imman baloney wiping out Israel, and parts of Europe. People you think you’ve seen violence? Well thanks to the MSM who’s short term vision was to get the GOP out, we will see it!

In true liberal fashion, Reid’s next step will be to claim that the accusations against him are racist or anti-Semetic or some other b.s. Then when there’s irrefutable proof of his involvement, he’ll claim that he was a victim because he had a terrible childhood. Soon thereafer, Michael J. Fox and other celebrities will leap to his side and support him.
How nice it must be to be a liberal when you can never do wrong and never be held accountable for your actions.

I’m a registered Dem; but, if they find Reid, Murtha or any politician dirty, I hope they racked them over the coals. But, damn near any politicain will look dirty if you look hard enough and scrutmize everything. The whole system is corrupt by nature, corporations or any business entity give to politicians in order to get something in return. It’s legalized bribery, I think we all new that. The only answer to stopping corruption is remove ALL CORPERATE MONEY FROM POLITICS.

Posted by: Don | November 15, 2006, 4:46 pm 4:46 pm

Really Mr. Ross, your timing on breaking this story about Reid, JUST AFTER the mid-term elections, is a transparent attempt by a liberal media outlet to hold a story until the report will NOT have an effect on the elections. If the story of Senator Reid’s corruption allegations were about a Republican, you would have broken the story in October thereby….ah, another liberal media attempt at an “October Surprise”. Is there any reason to not understand why ABC, NBC, CBS, NY TIMES, WASH. POST etc etc. are losing ratings/circulation. May your ratings continue to decline.

Posted by: Jackie from NJ | November 15, 2006, 4:48 pm 4:48 pm

Call it what you want, but “campaign donations” is nothing more than legalized blackmail. Remember Senators and Congressman (of both parties) as well as future Presidents, when you put you right hand on the Bible and you swear to uphold the Consitution and laws of this great land of ours, think about your future actions. Until America wakes up and demands term limits (no more than two consecutive terms) for both the senate and congress, America will never see an uncorrupt legislative body.

Joyce Neel comment:
“30 thousand compared to 150,000″
Are you referring to the Iraqi people that ARE GETTING KILLED BY THE IRAN BACKED GANGSTERS! Sorry I yelled but that is plain stupid.
Does the name Tokyo Rose, the Rosenbergs, do these names mean anything to you?
These were people much like the mainstream media that would be happy to present as much bad information about the US as possible. Why else would the MSM continue to pound Foley 10,500 vs Jefferson 805 inquiries in Google and that’s not MSM bias?
Sorry but I really don’t care whether it was” abramhoff is your scandal and not the democrats.”
It is the plain and simple fact that the MSM media is the real enemy. I don’t really blame the uctious slimy Democrats who simply want power they have an excuse and I can always discount them. BUT the MSM lap dogs for the Democrats proven by many many studies including the UCLA study that of the 20 MSM outlets 18 are left of center. This means these 18 are biased but won’t admit it.
And it is this bias of the news that is getting people killed!
This is not a political issue for me, but a simply fact that I just don’t understand why people like you don’t get it.
Bad news presently frequently gives the gangsters in Iraq encouragement. Encouragement means more US soldiers being killed.
Encouragement means they will continue to kill there till as stupid Kucinich will do kill the funding will kill more troops. Over there. Then when we leave “there” where will these gangsters resume their killing of infidels? HERE!
Don’t you understand this simple logic. We can have a few of our soldiers killed there so that those gangsters don’t come to your town and kill you. That simple.

“We have no idea what Abramoff is telling prosecutors to save his skin, but I do know that these kind of old allegations are completely ridiculous and untrue,” Sen. Reid’s spokesman Jim Manley told ABC News.
Funny, I thought the only reason someone would lie in interrogation is if they were being tortured. I think we must look into the interrogation methods used to question Abramoff. Because we all know that if you ask terrorists, I mean lobbyists nicely they tell the truth and the whole truth. They only tell lies to save their skin if they are being tortured.

I love the second paragraph where a Reid spokesperson says the senator did nothing unethical or illegal.
If memeory serves correctly, he just recently had to amend his ethics reports to include the transfer of property to a business run by a lawyer friend back in 2000, for shares of the business.
As for illegal, wasn’t the contribution from campaign funds to the holiday fund for his servants at Watergate against federal laws. He wound up reimbursing his campaign funds from his own money.
Nothing unethical or illegal, does he have a different set of ethics rules & laws than the rest of us or other elected officials? Can’t wait for the Senate ethics committee & FBI to investigate, I know the news media won’t.

Let’s see, as the prostitutes in Washington fill their prockets (both parties), the following is occuring:
1) Medicare will be financially insolvent in about 15 years
2) Social Security will face massive cash shortages in about 10 years
3) We are stuck in a war costing precious lives and over $10 billion a month
4) Militant Islamists are plotting thie next big terrorist hit on us
5) The border is wide open for millions more to come here
6) China is becoming a huge meancing presence (and we are financing that
7) The national debt is approximately $10 TRILLION dollars
8) We are shipping more high paying jobs out of the country than we are creating
The Murtha’s, Reid’s, Foley’s, Clinton, Jefferson types who can’t keep your pants up or your pockets full enough, keep up your corruption, America is on the decline, the Fall of the Roman Empire, part II. History does repeat itself!

Wow, Brian – you’re such a journalist – a patriot, even! Exposing the Dems side of things too, wait – what day is this? Oh, too late!!
The biggest farce played by Dems was acting “moderate” while putting the left-wing nut jobs in positions of POWER – Pelosi, Reid, Hastings, Levin, Leahy, Conyers, Rangel, etc…. and too many “sheep” fell for it – hook, line & sinker.
Just rmeember, while half this country is so worried this winter who the hell will win American Idol, the terrorists will be laughing, and plotting…
Maybe the MSM & Dems will be happy when someone actually detonates a suitcase nuke in a major city – or maybe they’ll just wring their hands and blame ourselves – after al, that’s what they do best.

The wacko right is at it again!!The “Duke” in Jail,Ney joining him soon.Libby indicted.Delay indicted.Abramoff, the bag man, went to Jail this morning. These guys were either indicted or convicted.
As to Reid, his land deal was perfectly legal.I hope the other charges are vigorously investigated.
When and if Reid is indicted then we have another story.
With the so called conservatives, mere mention is tantamount to conviction.
Get over it,the American people wanted change. The next two years will uncover a web of corruption unequaled since Teapot Dome.

Wow, there are a lot of angry people posting today! Gee, what could they be so upset about? (hint-Nov 7).
Might it be the so-called “liberal media”?
Talk about a myth that won’t die.
The MSM is a profit-driven corporate entity (think GE) who’ve been sporting kid gloves for the past six years. Now that the Dems are in power (think House Speaker Pelosi) the MSM is sharpening their knives for the kill.
If Reid is guilty, then he should face the music. If he starts to blame the messenger then I guess he learned something useful from Karl Rove after all.

Culture of Corruption. Reid takes a million dollar bribe for a land swap deal other democrats are against, funds a bridge in Laughlin, NC to increase the value of his property on the river there and is now being sold out by Abramoff. Well so much for the Democratic Senate Majority Leader. How bout the House, oh, well we’ve got Murtha aka Mr. Abscam unindicted co-cospirator. Hey, how bout the new committee chairman that Pelosi voted to impeach from the federal bench. Great, she’s really cleaning up Washington. However, I doubt ABC will see any relevance to these items due to the “D” behind their names.

Posted by: Jack | November 15, 2006, 5:46 pm 5:46 pm

Reid didn’t do anything illegal or unethical unless it looks bad in which case he’ll amend he ethics reports, pay for boxing ticket bribes and repay misappropriated “holiday bonus” payments. Yeah, he didn’t do anything unless it looks bad, then he’ll take some crap action to “correct a minor” bribe.

Posted by: Jack | November 15, 2006, 5:54 pm 5:54 pm

Is this what the Democrats meant when they said during the election that they wanted to end the “culture of corruption” in our nation’s capital? During the election Pelosi said she wanted to “drain the swamp,” now she supports Johnny “Abscam” Murtha for house majority leader. Seems to me that the Democrats are making all the wrong moves before they even get started. What does it tell you about leadership in the Democratic party when the best they have are clowns like, e.g., “Abscam” Murtha, “Impeach Me” Hastings, “Refrigerator” Jefferson, “Casino” Reid, “SF Conservative” Pelosi, “Comb-over” Levin, “Who wants to live in Mississippi” Rangel, and “Squeaky-clean” Bob Menendez. Worse yet, what does it say about all the lemmings out there that keep voting for these knuckle-heads just b/c the main-stream media (e.g., Brian Ross) support the Democratic party? Wake up America, the only solution to our problems is to become more involved in politics, not less. If more people cared (and paid attention), less idiots would hold office.

There is no doubt that Senator Reid is corrupt….. Americans have been betrayed by the media’s narrow focus on corruption only among Republicans…. Subsequently, many deceived voters have elected a majority that will be even more corrupt and power hungry than the Republicans….. There is a desperate need for term limits to minimize the opportunity for corruption. Corruption needs to be stopped on both sides of the aisle.

Also, notice the nearly total (if not total) “news” blackout nationwide of anything remotely related to the elections and their credibility/veracity from Nov. 06.
No outcry or even complaints nationwide from so much as one voting district? Democrats won so that means it’s all o.k. Or so their latest tactic goes.

The saddest part of our present partisan politics is the very institution, the American press, which was delegated unlimited rights of constitutional freedom has chosen sides and could very well be the facilitor in the demise of the very democracy they were to report upon to the electorate.
The management of the press through the Smith act of 1947 and finally defining Un-American activities by individuals who can be subpoened in front of a sanctioned commission (McCarthyism ?- Yeah he had it right) to determine the depth of damage they can and would do to this country (evidence presented) and its constitution is long overdue for the US Media. It isn’t just about Hollywood anymore. This country and it’s democracy, are on the line. In large part because of bias in the US press, left wing moonbat college professors and the resultant biased journalism are all at the forefront of creating that massive damage to this democracy. This isn’t free thinking or elitist process of thought. It’s subversion and those who promote the subversion should be disgraced publicly and even do prison time. It was normal in the 50′s to protect the US from liberals who gave secrets to the soviet union simply to cause the defeat and downfall of America.

GOP morons don’t recognize that this is an old story, and that the so-called liberal media has been trying to tar Reid for a non-existent association with Abramoff for more than a year.
The bottom line is that Reid took money from Abramoff’s Indian clients—that’s the whole story.
Reid had accepted their money before, and had a legitimate interest in doing so.
He didn’t go on any junkets, he didn’t propose legislation to protect those involved in sex-slavery (several Republicans includedhere); he didn’t go to Signatures and get free meals; he didn’t get free tickets for sports events from Abramoff.
There’s no story here, and what story there is is quite old.
The only new part is that Abramoff is saying that Reid will go down. Well, Abramoff will undoubtedly try his best to hurt Reid, because Abramoff is a hyperpartisan Republican.
I’m not holding my breath waiting for Reid to resign or be charged.

I love it. The subtitle to all these response should be “Angry, White, Probably Rich, Men.”
I would be furious at the state of the American conservative if it wasn’t a pointless excercise of shouting at the wind. The Republicans lost, the people voted, live with it or (to coin a popular conservative phrase) get the hell out. People didn’t vote the Republicans out of office because they’re stupid, misinformed or were led astray. They did it because they are worse off than they were 7 years ago. Or, in the case of younger voters, they saw through the thin veil of deceit.
Look at our country:
We have the first generation of Americans that can expect to do worse than their parents.
We’ve generated the largest deficit in history by spending the greatest amount of money ever and giving the richest people in our country the biggest tax break of all time.
Soon, our war in Iraq will outlast World War II at a monumental cost to the American people both emotionally and financially. How many children have lived w/o a parent now, how many families have a soldier overseas, and how many people’s lives have been affected forever (3,000 dead 20,000+ injured). For what? The opportunity to make Bush’s self-fulfilling prophecy a reality. Now more than ever, Iraq is training ground for terrorists that will soon cause tragedy on U.S. soil.
The last congress didn’t accomplish a thing that I can remember, except for maybe the $230 million bridge to nowhere.
The middle class is shrinking. Quickly.
Social security is disappearing as the baby boomers prepare for retirement. And it will take everything the younger generation has to make sure it lasts long enough for their parents to die.
The news media is almost (including this outlet) entirely corporately owned and constantly cutting newsroom budgets to increase profits. I’d bet most people at the top of these companies partook in the BIG tax cut listed above. Why did the second largest newspaper company in the United States sell last year? They’re shareholders focred them to b/c they only had a 19% profit. Who bought them? Another giant news corporation that sold a bunch of their papers to other big corporations.
The number of Americans without medical insurance is growing.
And the only thing Democrat and Repubican politicians can agree on is that they’re completely opposed to giving any chance to third party candidates.
That’s off the top of my head. But, hey, you’re right – people would either have to be stupid or crazy to want change in America.
Those liberals sure are ruining America! You guys better hurry up get organized so you can ruin it first!

Ross quotes Solomon’s AP “work” which has been debunked and debunked again. Is this all that Mark Halperin can muster?

Either the media bias has to change, or 90% of clueless Americans should be banned from voting. There’s nothing worse than a vote cast by someone who has no brain matter. That’s the only reason the liberals took back control…

When you have only 23% of the elgible voters even bothering to cast a vote we get what we deserve, and don’t think for a minute that the bums in office don’t know this, and count on it. If “We the People” ever woke up and relized it we could take control of OUR government, but no we are too lazy to exercise our freedom to choose. What needs to happen is that we have a turnout to vote that exceeds even 50% would be enough to send a message – if we wnat term limits then vote those into office that aren’t afraid to limit their stay to 2 terms in either house; if they won’t then get them out. We have the power, but we fail to use it, and for any and all of you in this forum that do not vote – LOG OFF you’ve got nothing to say.

Reid is as big a rat as any in Washington and he should be booted out or resign, but Jack Abramoff telling the Feds about Reid isn’t even news. Everyone should have known that was happening.
Roy Blunt took money from Jack Abramoff and wrote letters for his Indian Casino clients too. He gave the money back, but only after it became clear that Jack Abramoff was singing to the Feds. He should be booted out or resign too. His name will come up soon in news similar to this too. I called Blunts office about it last year. Jack’s done a lot of singing since then.
It’s not a “Party Thing”. It’s an “Elected Official wants more Power Thing”.
I think we all did pretty good getting rid of quite a few of these rats in the last election but voters have to learn that this is not just one party doing this.
Spit out the Cool-Aid now, no matter which flavor you’ve swallowed, and suddenly you’ll see much clearer.

Posted by: Bills | November 15, 2006, 7:35 pm 7:35 pm

This “story” is almost a year old.
Reid is a Senator for Nevada. Las Vegas is in Nevada. The main source of revenue for Las Vegas is gambling. Anything that would hurt revenue from gambling in Las Vegas would concern a Senator from Nevada. Hence, Reid has always opposed expansion of off-reservation gambling. He DID NOT change his stance.
Most of the contacts between Abramoff operatives and Reid concerned legislation affecting labor in the Marianas Islands. Reid was Majority Whip and would have been contacted as a matter of course because he would know when certain votes were coming up. What Ross’s article DOES NOT point out is that Reid VOTED AGAINST (yes, that’s right, AGAINST) the legislation that Abramoff wanted passed. If Abramoff was bribing Reid, then why did Reid vote against Abramoff’s interests? Dear God, Ross, how could you have forgotten to mention this?
As for Reid’s “land deal”, it is true that he profitted from the sale of land. He did report these profits, in compliance with Senate ethics procedures. Unlike HASTERT, Reid did not take legislative action that made sure that his land would dramatically go up in price.
To those who are so ready to smear Murtha, I have a few words for you:
John McCain. Keating Five. Look it up.
And to those who support Hoyer, you are supporting a man who is afraid to openly oppose this immoral, illegal war that is killing and maiming so many of our fine, dedicated soldiers, bankrupting this country, and doing nothing to combat terrorism. Hoyer also approves of all of the trade agreements that have sent our jobs overseas and have guaranteed that our children will NOT have a bright future.

Most voters realize that sadly, they are making a “lesser of two evils” choice. The corruption in the Republican party was significantly greater, and that means just what it soumds like: “more” not “instead of.” It would be interesting to see just who is running this investigation. We won’t really know what’s going on for awhile anyway with all this.

Dirty Harry gets away with everything. The bought and paid for “news” organizations in LV (Channels 3, 5, 8, and 13)made ZERO mention of Reid’s corrupt land deals or his raiding his campaign funds to pay his part of the Christmas fund at the posh Washington digs he lives in. I mean they said NOTHING! I don’t think there’s a questions whether or not our local media is biased. Obviously they are extremely selective on what they report…they know who pays there salaries. So I think Harry will just slither out of this like the snake he is…It’s good to be a senator…eh Harry? Oh, Brian Ross, way to lose all credibility!

The story is old, the allegations have been disproved and ABC is playing kissy face with the GOP. Those of you who waste your time attacking or defending either side of this crap are clearly not fully aware of the atrocities taking place all over the world. Innocent children are dying everywhere and you’re bitching about this garbage. Both Jefferson and Jesus would puke.

I can’t believe how partisan these comments are. There is no hope for this country if everything has to be framed in Democratic or Republican terms. Us vs Them! Demonizing one oarty or the other! I’m sick of it all. We need a viable third party. Political affiliation should not be your identity. These are just the people that run the government. Don’t we all just want a government that does the best possible job for the most people?

Wow.
For a “liberal media” site there’s sure a lot of right-wing cranks here…
Look, losers, you can’t keep lying. The facts are that this story is over a year old and has been thoroughly debunked. Waited until after the election to release it? Man, you people are idiots.
ABC is about as fair and balanced as Fox, and the mainstream media is utterly controlled by corporate interests. So your “liberal media” whining is pathetic — look at O’Reilly, Limbaugh, Coulter, Malkin, Hannity, Ingraham,… all right-wing nutjobs who get airtime every day preaching their hate and peddling their lies. Where are the liberals? Keith Olbermann? Al Franken? That’s hardly media saturation, is it…
Keep it up. You’ll turn America into a fascist state yet — you have two more years to try.

Party A is vile and reprehensible and Party B is all that is virtuous and good in the world. Party A sacrifices infants and drinks their blood, while Party B helps old ladies across the street. Blah blah blah blah blah.
Meanwhile, back in reality, American people are left without recourse while the corporate juggernaut begins its ownership of all American resources and legislation. So, well done, us.

I feel like such a fool. I voted for Senator Reid when I lived in Nevada and I voted for William Jefferson when I lived in Louisiana…now because of me, we have a man who stashed $97,000 of bribes in his freezer and another who put a deep freeze on a political party with his lies and deception. Is there anyone out there who can actually look me in the eye and tell me that they are honest…and actually BE honest?
Oh foolish, naive me…and to think, I voted for Nancy Pelosi last week.
Make me the first person in your district to change my party affiliation to Republican, Nancy…I am going to the post office right away…I feel violated, bamboozled, misled and now screwed! Let’s see how many of our party will do the honorable thing and resign from office. At least that is what the Republicans did when they were implicated. I would rather have honest people running my country than Republicans, Democrats and Independents…This cheapens America and our Constitution. Also, ABC, NBC, CBS, CNN and FOX all need to be called out on this as they influenced my vote. All I heard about for the past six years is how the Republicans are bad for this and that…they had me believing it…and I bought it hook, line and sinker…oh silly me! Well, fool me once…shame on you…fool me twice…

The people casting this as an ABC conspiracy haven’t done an honest day’s work in journalism in their lives.
Read the story, people. It’s based on a leak from within the investigation. That’s the real question — why leak only Reid, and why now?
Sigmund Freud once said, “sometimes, a cigar is just a cigar.”
Sometimes, a story is just a story.
And if Reid is guilty, he needs to go, now. The difference between Republican and Democratic supporters is that Repubs will back anyone who will wear their label.

And don’t forget about Ambramoff’s trips to the Whitehouse. Abramoff and his colleagues billed their clients for more than 400 contacts with White House officials between 2001 and 2004. Let the investigations begin!

This is sloppy journalism, I say as one journalist to another.
Why should I believe your anonymous source? You don’t even tell us why you need to protect the source’s ID, which is a cardinal rule for the very rare times a credible news organizaton might risk its own credibility to use an anonymous source.
Lame.
My assumption is the source is anonymous because he/she doesn’t want to be held accountable for MISinformation, distortions and propaganda. Or maybe it’s because it’s not a privileged, first-hand source to give that information but you want us to believe it is solid, anyway.
The report says the source already predicts all this can’t be developed into charges. Not news, then, if that’s the case.
If this was real journalism, and not just plagiarizing some oppo research company’s press release under a celebrity name, where are the dates? the amounts? the names of intermediaries? attributions to privileged sources? in short, the proofs?
This story makes a conclusion without providing one single verifiable fact or any evidence beyond a nebulous source who won’t go on record.
This isn’t journalism.
My guess is that this means Halperin is back in the saddle, done with his book tour for now.
Right, Brian?

Reid may be corrupt, but it isn’t from contack with Jack.
Painting this as a conspiracy by a secretly liberal Abramoff and the so called liberal media is just silly. If one media group refused to run it before the election, it could have gone to FNC. Nobody really takes fair and balanced seriously, do they? All Bushco needed to do was hand it to any of the media goons spoiling for a story to put their name on, or failing that, the gossip queen Drudge.

Listen, no one is going to cover these stories if Reid and the other Democrats are involved. NBC CBS ABC And especially the NYT’s will bury all this. They have probably had this info for quite some time and they must protect their own agenda so they will NOT say a word about any Democrat being investigated. What did that survey say? 77% of all midterm election news was PRO Democrat leading up to the election. Wise up, the mainstream media is in the democrats pocket, we will never know the truth

Posted by: SL | November 15, 2006, 9:38 pm 9:38 pm

Ah, come on, folks, the story was out there. I know I heard it well before the election. So it really isn’t fair to blame the media if you were unaware. As for whether or not Reid is corrupt, we will have to await the results of the investigation. Simply making accusations isn’t enough. Sometimes even compelling evidence on the surface can turn out to mean something altogether different. We’ll have to wait and see.

This info about the $68,000 was out a long time before the elections. I don’t know why so many people commenting here don’t remember that. Reid said that the money did not cause him to change his votes or provide influence. Until someone can prove otherwise, this is just a rehash of old news.

It is not a Republican problem or a Democrat problem. It is a problem of certain individuals who came to believe that they can get away with such crimes.
Each and every one should be prosecuted when the evidence requires it. Race, sex, color, creed, national origin, or political party are all irrelevant. None of those things are the cause or even the symptoms of these crimes.

Dems less corrupt than who? How long did the Chicago Mayor Daley machine wheel and deal? Dead people voting? The St. Louis Acorn voter registartion scam this last election.
And worse, Republicans probably are the slaves of Big business, but Democrates live and die on money from thge legal community… What are all those jokes about the ethics of lawyers?

Posted by: Steve | November 15, 2006, 10:45 pm 10:45 pm

Abramoff just made these allegations…the ‘source’ was obviously not ‘friendly’ to dems; if it was known sooner, it would have been made sooner.
If it is true, reid should be made to step down. (yes I’m a democrat)
But to all ridiculous posters speaking on the MSM and dems in partnership, I challenge you two 3 things…
1)Tell me about how Jeff Gannon, the happy gay hooker, was talked about in the press…he was barely touched…yet he had access to the White House? Including spending several nights according to the Secret Services’ records? Was that explored? How does someone gain an a temporary ID under a FAKE name, and allowed within within feet of the President?
2)Chad Castagana…know who that is? The ‘right wing republican nutjob’ who worships Laura Ingraham, Ann Coulter, and Michelle Malkin, and sent fake anthrax to liberal leaders, and pundits? Why can’t you go to CNN and do a search and find him? How much time is being spent on this? The guy was found by the FBI to have chemicals and instructions on how to make bombs…BIG STORY right? Yea, right.
3)Tommy Tomlinson…know who that is? No? Well, maybe it’s because the MSM ISN’T as in league with the Dems as you say. Maybe you’re all just stupid, and not paying attention…
How about this simple fact:
extremist muslims think that liberalism will be the downfall of society…
and
extremist christians think that liberalism will be the downfall of their society
Or, extremist muslim nutjobs blow themselves up for a cause,
and
christians send their young sons and daughters to blow up the extremist muslims.
Cut and dry.

Posted by: Mike | November 15, 2006, 11:12 pm 11:12 pm

The idea that some vast left-wing conspiracy exists is absolutely beyond me. Sure, most MSM outlets lean left, but the sheer number of media outlets all but destroy any chance of total collusion. One user said the AP reported this before the election. While they may have, not a single network did major stories about it, not even Fox News.
Maybe there’s another explanation: Harry Reid is poised to become Senate Majority Leader, a job with significant amounts of power, including the power to decide the order in which legislation is considered. Prior to the election, Harry Reid was simply the Senate Minority Leader; his position had none of those trappings. Part of the controversy stems from one party controlling both the Congress and White House. It only makes sense that Abramoff would try to wine and dine Republicans. His political ideology was Republican and the Republicans had a majority. It is a much better move to bribe someone in the majority rather than someone in the minority. This report to me seems sketchy, more like a witch hunt than anything else. The article has it right: so far only one Member of Congress has been charged, and he is likely guilty because he resigned. No one else has been charged, thus they are all innocent until proven guilty. That doesn’t mean they’re not corrupt.

Posted by: Andrew Elgert | November 15, 2006, 11:17 pm 11:17 pm

If you want to better understand Harry Reid, just remember it was cultivated in his hometown of Searchlight, Nevada. In that old gold-mining town, it’s long been rumored that Reid has had a close, uncanny relationship with the local casino owner, called the Nugget, owned by Vera Doing, who racketeers the town as a primary employer, large landowner, and councilmen. Some townspeople even allege that Reid personally intervened when Doing owed an incredible amount of income tax that put her at risk of losing the casino. It’s also rumored that Reid has colluded with large developers from Vegas to rezone federally protected land for the desert tortoise to open the way for development.
Searchlight could become the big Casino town between Vegas and Laughlin but people like Reid and Doing hold a quasi-monopoly, will certainly stifle outside competition, and reap the profits from their positions of power and wealth. So much for American ethics!

Steve, Mayor Daley has been dead for about 50 years. Give it up already. And the ACORN thing was was an aberration that didn’t cause even one fraudulent vote, unlike the millions of fake votes (not even as valid as dead voters)and switcheroos by the hackers hired to fix the electronic vote machines. The distinction is obvious in the reality-based world.

Yet, instead of being ashamed of ourselves, of what our media has become, of what our corrupt political parties have done to a system that is supposed to represent and protect all of us, all we have to read here are slimy, smarmy, whiny accusations.
Maybe instead of trying to pass constitutonal amendments against flag burning, this last Congress could have passed a damned amendment banning any member of a political party from holding any public office if corruption was proven.

Call it what you want, but campaign contributions are nothing more that legalized blackmail. Remember this Senators and Congressmen (of both parties) as well as future Presidents, when you put your hand on the Bible, you swear to uphold the Constitution and laws of this great land. So think hard about your actions and consequences. This country does not have a good reputation around the world and this is just another black eye.

Fox media hates democrats. They only invite them on the Fox news network so that they can ask them questions and then out talk them so that the democrats can’t answer their questions. Many thanks from an independent that tries to look at both sides of the issues. Fox news is biased on almost every issue connected to a democrat. They should be investigated for hiring only republican news commentators. I think that amounts to discrimination against middle of the road commentators that are not biased against any party such as the ABC commentators which try to remain netural .
