Gates’ Unfinished Business: Racism at Texas A&M

At the same moment, Pres. Bush was introducing Texas A&M Pres. Robert Gates as his nominee for Secretary of Defense, hundreds of students at the university were protesting a videotape featuring a white student wearing black shoe polish on his face, acting as a slave. It is an example, some professors say, of the unfinished business Gates will leave behind at Texas A&M: ending racial hostility on campus. "It is institutional and has permeated the university for a long time," says Zulema Valdez, a professor of sociology at Texas A&M.  THE BLOTTER RECOMMENDS Video Leads Sheriff’s Office to Apologize for Attack on Protesters Mine Deaths Blamed on Company Run by Major GOP Contributor Click Here to Check Out More of the Brian Ross Page Just before leaving for Washington, Gates condemned the blackface video as "so utterly disgusting that, regardless of race, religion, or background, I believe virtually any member of our Aggie family would be outraged and ashamed if they viewed it." Sociology professor Rogelio Saenz says while Gates has done more than his predecessors in addressing the issue of racism on campus, "there have only been surface changes where deeper changes need to be made in this structural and cultural problem." The student-produced video came to the university’s attention on Monday, according to university officials. Sherylon Carroll, a university spokesperson, said she could not answer questions about whether any students had been disciplined, citing privacy laws, but did say the students are "no longer enrolled at the university." It is not known when the tape was originally produced. On the tape, the white student in blackface is disciplined by a second white student playing the role of a slave master with a belt.  Professors say the white student is carrying a "12th Man Towel," a symbol of how Texas A&M fans help the football team. In the three-and-a-half minute tape, the student in blackface is put through a mock whipping and sexual assault. Click here to see a 19-second excerpt.
In a letter to students on Tuesday, Gates wrote, "The hateful video is not simply an example of poor judgment and insensitivity; it appears to have been purposefully produced to insult and demean." Gates adds, "Texas A&M is doing more than ever to attract, retain and graduate a diverse student body." A spokesperson for Texas A&M says Gates returned to the campus after his White House appearance in order to further address the racism issue with students and faculty.

Racism was clearly a problem at A&M before Gates arrived. More distressing to me is that the President selected a man known to have manipulated intelligence, lied to Congress, and sold weapons to both Iran and Sadaam Hussein (including chemical weapons and cluster bombs).
We need someone in this position who has the good sense to make decisions based upon the facts, and in the best interests of the United States. This nomination is absolutely unacceptable.

My God, what are the Democrat’s going to do about this. It has not even been 3 days since they have been elected to power and now we have college students in “Blackface” in Texas. This would have never happened when the Repub’s were in charge of the House and Senate. Help us Nancy Pelosi and Ted Kennedy. (Lib’s are going to get a tast of what I had to endure for the past 10 years).

That makes no sense, Mike Jones.
The Democrats aren’t in power until January, and they have nothing to do with the policy of Texas A&M.
Stupid, non-sensical, and baseless.

Mike Jones’ comment is just idiotic!! The school did not find out about the “Blackface” video until Monday – - one day before the election!! The sad truth is that in the President’s home state this type of nonsense is still going on. The Democrats will make change, but Texas is still RED.

It’s a real shame; ask yourself if at one point or another, have you not judged a person by the skin? We a pretend to be against racism, but in reality we all participate one way or other.
I only hope that the future generation is able to rid of this hippocracy and usher a new age they all live as equal humans.

mike jones – it is the people of Texas A&M that are complaining about Gates leaving unfinished business, not your boogeyman “democrats.” do us all a favor and crawl back under your rock with your heroes Rush and Hannity for another 10 years. America doesn’t need your divisive rhetoric anymore.

First of all, it is not said when this video was made. Secondly, what does this have to do with the democrat leadership? Nothing! How could it? You make no sense! Obviously, these boys are racists and were racists long before the democrats took over. Wake up!

This is disgusting. Can’t blame Jackie Sheryll for this one he left Texas A&M years ago. I believe Charlie Rangel and Nancy Pelosi must get their act together and get down to Texas with some solutions before this kind of act becomes part a wider epidemic. This Congress must be proactive in stopping bias on our university campuses. I am disappointed that this has already happened on their watch. I voted for you and I expect results yesterday.

It did happen while republican were in office.

Is this racist or just dumb college kids acting like kids? Of course it is tasteless, but I think getting national attention is going a little overboard.

Posted by: Justin | November 10, 2006, 3:10 pm 3:10 pm

As a student at Texas A&M, I can tell you that this video is just the tip of the iceberg. Over the past 18 months, numerous international students have been physically assaulted by white supremacists. Black, Hispanic, and Asian students all report racist treatment from professors and students, ranging from public racist epithets and mockery to various forms of intimidation.
What is the most frustrating is that the University has consistently done little to nothing to improve the climate here.
Concerned student and faculty organizations have repeatedly presented the administration with actionable steps they could take to correct the obviously racially problematic culture here. Each time, the administration (often in concert with the police department) has done as little as possible.
Texas A&M University’s hesitations and refusals to act decisively can only be understood as tacit, or even overt, support for the racist ideology expressed in the recent blackface video.

Posted by: Glenn | November 10, 2006, 3:11 pm 3:11 pm

What a ridiculous “controversy”? Why in the world would anyone believe that some video made by two or three idiots represents the attitudes of an entire university? Furthermore, why would anyone hold the university president accountable for not being able to “end” racism? Racism is a simple fact of humanity, and it occurs in every country in the world and in every state in the United States. How one man can be expected to “end” racism when no person or country on Earth has been able to do so is beyond me.
It’s embarassing that any thinking person would believe this video is indicative of anything more than the stupidity of its creators. Just another example of the media frenzy and the irrationality of the average American (as seen in several of the other posted comments).

Posted by: David P | November 10, 2006, 3:15 pm 3:15 pm

As a student of A&M, I can tell you that the students in the video have been identified and expelled. There was plenty of outrage on campus, however there is no “systematic racism” on this campus. The sociology profs that are continuously quoted in articles have an agenda and are seizing on an opportunity.

I look at this incident as a form of terrorism. We started a war in Iraq to fight terror, when we are going to start fighting the terrorist who have been attacking blacks in the country for over 300 years. Oh, I’m sorry; the good lord is fighting this battle at home for us. Isn’t Texas staring to look more like Mexico every day? No, no, I mean, isn’t the whole country starting to look like the people who the American terrorist hate the most every day? What are the racist terrorist going to do when the complexion of the citizens in this country gets browner and browner? God is changing the make up of this country because he has heard the cries of the victims of racism. Just wait until all these people start voting.

Since when are you Lib’s going to let the facts get in the way of the truth. Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid have been elected and are the Leaders (elect) in charge of the House and Senate and “Look what is going on in Texas” I need to get on the phone with Michael Moore and Cindy Sheehan. I am hoping He will make a movie about this terrible racist tragedy and maybe she will come and state a protest about this bigotry.

Posted by: mike jones | November 10, 2006, 3:20 pm 3:20 pm

I went to Texas A&M University and truly this is not the first time something ignorant and hateful has gone unpunished. Texas A&M needs to actively address and challenge the mentality of the majority “southern boy” student body. Great education, disappointing student life.

Posted by: Taylor | November 10, 2006, 3:26 pm 3:26 pm

Um, . . . Republicans are still in control of congress nubcake.

Posted by: Hahah | November 10, 2006, 3:27 pm 3:27 pm

Oprah just did an episode the other day where high school students participated in an event called Challenge Day. This is where several students from different social and ethnical backgrounds get together to learn about each other. They teach the students about other races and cultures and how they are all facing similar issues in life. It opens the communication lines between students and helps them understand that it is not ok to abuse or make fun of someone just because they are Black, White, Gay, Rich, Poor or whatever.
Also, to blame this incident on anyone other than who perpetrated it is inexcusable. When are we going to stop blaming others for our actions and take responsibility for once? It’s not the Democrats, Republicans or the President it was a select few students who decided they have nothing better to do but make fools of themselves. They should be punished and dealt with accordingly. Then the rest of the student body should be required to participate in a Challenge Day.

Posted by: ME ME ME ME | November 10, 2006, 3:28 pm 3:28 pm

I am sure that when the makers of the video are questioned about it their response will be something akin to “we were just playing!”
Unfortunately slavery may be a terrible memory but its ramifications are not. There is nothing humorous or funny about the video (I should add that I have not seen it myself) and Texas A&M should respond quickly and appropiately.
I attended a junior high school that had about 3 other black students. Another class was putting on a Thanksgiving play that involved historical figures and time travel. Rather than leave out George Washington Carver, they put black shoe polish on a white kid! It wasn’t funny then and its not funny now.

Posted by: Bobby Brown | November 10, 2006, 3:31 pm 3:31 pm

Hey, that looks like the same blackface photo that Lamont used on that Anti-Lieberman ad.

Posted by: mike jones | November 10, 2006, 3:32 pm 3:32 pm

As a student at Texas A&M, hearing about the video’s existence was utterly appauling. This is not just an isolated incident however, as racism and acts of bigotry have existed for years on this campus, making this video a catalyst for change. Many students support Dr. Gate’s nomination as the Secretary of Defense and feel honored to have had him serve as our president. However, the person who is going to fill his shoes is going to have a lot of pressure put on him to make sure that this isn’t just pushed under the rug and that true means for change occurs.

Again, why does this story need to be made political? This is an issue for the A&M community, not Republicans and Democrats. The comments about this being related to just Texas and Bush’s home state are nonsense. This deep-rooted cultural behavior exists everywhere in this country. That’s the sad part.

I wonder if perhaps Mike Jones has made his ridiculous baseless statement out of the simple desire for people to pay attention to him. Unbelievable, but more so sad that one would need to sink to this level of rhetoric for attention, even if it’s negative.

I graduated from A&M in 2003, and it is such a shame that this video came from such a wonderful university. Texas A&M is such a unique institution, and I can assure everyone here reading this story that this is such an extremely isolated incident. Texas A&M should be known for events such as Muster, the Big Event, Silver Taps, and a host of other programs and activites that brighten the landscape of the Brazos Valley, Texas, and the United States. It is so sad that few bad apples have ruined it for all of us. I personally hope these young men are kicked out of the University and are the first individuals ever officially recognized as “Ex-Aggies”.

First, those that made this racist video should be punished to the extent possible.
Second, quit politicizing this issue. These people are representative of what is wrong in society, not Texas A&M University. I graduated from Texas A&M, and while there, I was not aware of any institutional policies or organizations that condoned racism.
Unfortunately, there will always be people that are ignorant and fearful of others of different races and religions.
To cast Texas A&M as an overtly racist school would be like saying ABC is a conservative news station, because Sean Hannity was on Good Morning America.

I personally doubt that Gates or anybody in the current A&M administration had any actual involvement in the film, and have condemned it whole heartedly. Dem or Repub, aren’t we all kind of sickened by this trash? This isn’t a job for the senate, or for the school administration (the first amendment is difficult to digest sometimes) it is a job for parents and our culture as a whole. Quit politicizing and get to work.

Why was this not in the headlines of ABC, racism is racism no matter that you think. It is not just at Texas A&M or UT and it needs to be stopped. See article below:

Ron. You and I are in agreement. This Has obviously happened under Bush’s administration (We all know he is a racist, especially after that black guy was drug behind that truck in Texas a few years ago) by all past logic. That’s right–the entire Texas A&M University, with a student body of approximately 45,000 students, who come from across Texas, across the country and from many other countries is racist because 3 dummies make a video and put it on the internet.

Posted by: Ken | November 10, 2006, 4:03 pm 4:03 pm

I just want to say that I attend Texas A&M University, I am Hispanic, racism exists here, but if you know the background to this story a lot of people commenting on here are just incorrect in their accusations and need to get their facts straight. This has nothing to do with politics, and ya’ll DON’T know when this video was made, so leave it be and let us handle our own affairs. We are trying to change some policies, create some new ones and make a change.

The next few years with the Dem’s in charge of the House and Senate are going to be a “whole lotta fun”. I saw on-line the other day where someone blamed Steve Irwin’s death on George W. (something to do with Global warming and making the Stingray mad) Anway, from now on I am going to use the same strategy that all the Lib’s have been using on the Repub’s. I am one of the majority of students at Texas A&M that is appalled and disgusted by this video. Don’t be ignorant and blame this on the President, or Texas or even Texas A&M. This video may have been made by students at this University, but if you are at all familiar with Aggie terminology, they are Two Percenters, meaning they are not really Aggies at all. This goes against what we refer to as the “Aggie Spirit” which cannot be understood by outsiders and cannot be explained by insiders. For the purposes of this post, I will say that I was raised in an Aggie family and am as blonde haired and blue eyed as a child can be, and am utterly disgusted by this. Be slow to judge our University based on this video, for it is not what Texas A&M is about.

As a current student at Texas A&M, I know for a fact this is an isolated incident. The students here as a whole do not tolerate this kind of crude behavior. I am angered that ABC would turn this political…..the students involved should be kicked out of this school to show that we do not tolerate this kind of behavior. Zero tolerance.

Posted by: Matt | November 10, 2006, 4:17 pm 4:17 pm

What those few students was hateful and stupid. Notably, the school, under Gate’s leadership, disciplined them. Smearing an entire community of nearly 50,000 students, and hundreds of thousands of Aggies based on the actions of these few students is nearly as stupid and hateful.

Posted by: Keith | November 10, 2006, 4:17 pm 4:17 pm

Keep in mind the full story not being told here is that these students were ostensibly making the video to portray racism at A&M. The video makers are not Klansmen; they’re incredibly misguided idiots who have hand delivered a grossly and easily distorted view of a school that I know for a fact is not what it’s being made out to be. Neither should you paint the entire state of Texas with one brush unless you want people to start posting all of the racist incidences, remarks, etc. that have come from all of the “more accepting and tolerant” liberal schools and states.
Treat it for what it is…. stupid kids that deserve to be punished….. not a major political event or a condemnation of an entire school or state. Would this have even been news if not for the nomination of Dr. Gates to the Bush Cabinet?

Posted by: Glen | November 10, 2006, 4:18 pm 4:18 pm

Obviously the making of this video was a poor idea. However, the individuals that produced the video intended to show the evils of racism. Their video is now backfiring on them, as I’m sure they’re being faced with disciplinary actions intended to punish racist individuals.
Unfortunately, 99% of the people that view this on ABC and this website have never been to Texas A&M and do not realize how friendly and accepting this community is for people of all ethnicities and backgrounds.
Know that this video is repulsive to Aggies, and this is not an accurate representation of our culture. Thanks for your attention.

When people start preaching “tolerance” it needs to extend both ways. These are college kids obviously in some type of prank – and if you think this type of thing does not happen at schools across the country then you are naive.
A&M is a good school and one that I would be proud for any of my kids to attend – and I’m a Longhorn….

These individuals are not reflective of Republicans, Democrats, Texans, or Texas A&M University. No segment of society is without its leaders and its dregs. To stamp a racist brand on A&M because of the actions of 3 horribly insensitive and ignorant students would be as logical as labeling every individual in the US armed forces as a murderer based on the action of one soldier, or to label the US Senate as a bunch of sexual deviants based on the actions of one congressman. More important than what these students did is how the rest of the A&M Community and Society respond to it. No one could be more disgusted than those students and faculty of A&M whom are unfairly represented by this video as belonging to and cultivating a racist culture. Also, I find it disgusting that of all things the media can focus on revolving Robert Gates is the actions of three ‘moronic’ students. There are far loftier aspects of Mr. Gates career and experiences that have more bearing of his qualifications as Secretary of Defense.

As an African American I’m less offended because it only solitifies the fact that this country as a whole is racist and we shouldn’t act surprised that this crap still happens.
Now as for the appointment of Mr. Gates. As the President of the University, he’s responsible for what comes out of there. If there aren’t suspentions handed down then that means the he and the university condone these actions. Putting the I’m disgusted spin will not work. All these comments on politics and this racial embarrasement is bogus. This was done by some dumb kids that is brain washed by their dumb parents. I can’t believe that people is racist. This has to stop one day. That is one reason America is screwed up. I mean here it 2006 and you still don’t the people who helped build this country. You talk bad and don’t want to give jobs to the people who really won the civil war. If it wasn’t for the brain washing of blackmen by the politics of America, you might see more succesfull ones. This is crazy. PEOPLE PLEASE LIVE TOGETHER AND NOT APART. I love living in Texas but, being a black you still have to watch your step cause of Racism. America killed BLACK PANTHERS and all they want was equall rights. KKK want to kill blacks and mexicans and still run an operation. YOU FIGURE IT OUT!!!

I am a student at Texas A&M and I assure you that the acts of these individuals are not a true representation of a Texas A&M Aggie. I have no idea what their reasoning was for making such an appauling video. Everybody in Aggieland is disgraced by these individuals and hope this doesn’t happen again in the future. For those of you who jump to irrational conclusions and think that because two idiots from a school consiting of 46,000 students produce a racist video, that everybody else there must be racist too, then you are mistaken. If you do not believe me then come to College Station and see for yourself of how friendly people are here. Also, this has absolutely nothing to do with Bush, Republicans, or Democrats.

There is racism in Texas? Im shocked.
Penn State had a mandatory requirement that students take a class in diversity. Many of the classes had small groups that would talk about racial issues where the T.A.’s would play devils advocate.
Im not saying this is a solution to racism but it is something that colleges can do to break down stereotypes and ignite change and discussion.

I am currently a hispanic student at Texas A&M. I have yet to experience any of kind of ‘racial hatred’ toward myself or anyone I know. These views are not mine or many of the students at Texas A&M. So please, when you speak of how ‘culturally setback’ people in Texas are, remember that it is just those few. Not us all.

What was Gates thinking?! I guess he didnt make his rounds to babysit every student that night and tuck them all into bed. Slacker. Those who preach tolerance, acceptance, and understanding should know that one incident does not an epidemic make. There are murderers on other college campuses across the country, so those institutions must be full of homicidal maniacs. It is not Gates’ job to parent these ADULTS. They are grown men and should be the only ones responsible for their actions. For every idiot like these, there are 1,000 who are the stark opposite.

“Sherylon Carroll, a university spokesperson, said she could not answer questions about whether any students had been disciplined, citing privacy laws, but did say the students are “no longer enrolled at the university.” ” – the administration has acted.
“hundreds of students at the university were protesting” – the students have spoken.
I think it’s safe to say the school’s students and administration are not tolerant of this act.

To Kyle who said that a Texas A&M is a school for wannabees..this school was founded as a military academy and to this day more Aggies have been and are in the armed forces than any other American Institution, women were admitted into the college under our President Rudder. Bush and Texas have nothing to do with this matter nor does TAMU, 3 idiots did this and they have been punished for it, our university is going through a change in regard to race and diveristy because of President Gates. His leadership at this institution has been nothing more than wonderful. If you don’t know about A&M don’t condemn us because there are racist people every where you go.

I find it disheartening that this issue of racism is met with a prejudice of it’s own. Assumptions have been made and that is unfortunate for all parties involved.
I had the benefit and joy of attending Texas A&M University for four years. I know Aggies do not condone or endorse this behaviour. I anticipate that these individuals will suffer consequence for their actions, however misguided.
To deny that racism exists everywhere, on some level, is to deny that the problem exists at all.
So to all who say “Once an Aggie always an Aggie” and insinuate that this is an A&M problem, I would like to say thank you. For I hope to always be an Aggie; with the ability to recognize that that this problem affects more than just my alma mater and the vision to change society for the better. We have too many people passing the buck these days. I am proud to come from a place that is a leader in changing pre-conceived notions and is willing to hold people accountable.

I personally warned Gates by email of the racism on his campus two weeks ago, when a student dressed as a Klansman for Halloween yelled “White power!” at my girlfriend, who is a member of a minority group, and was cheered on by his peers. Gates did not respond. This is NOT an isolated incident, though Gates (in his email) insists on treating it as one.

Posted by: Drew | November 10, 2006, 5:51 pm 5:51 pm

Note – These ex-students are no longer enrolled at Texas A&M – How can it be put more clearly that the university does not condone the attitude or behavior depicted in the video.
It is naive to think that racism does not still exist at Texas A&M, but it is also naive to think that racism is limited to that institution, that state, or one political party. The video does not represent Texas A&M, Dr. Gates, Texas, or anything but the attitudes of small-minded idiots who figured out how to use a video camera.
How could Dr. Gates possible be held responsible for the contents of a tape produced without his knowledge? A university can’t impose morality and common decency in all of it’s students, it can only hope to encourage these qualities. And I think a fair and larger polling of Texas A&M students would reveal them to be of significantly higher character than the idiots in the video.

You should read all of the hate mail I have received in the past 2 hours. This is nothing more than a smear campaign from liberals who want A&M to abandon it’s (historical) traditions and relatively conservative history (which by no means is equated to being supportive of racism), and march in lockstep with the rest of their mind-numbed, groupthink, leftist establishment.
To show a few students, out of the 44,000 who are presently enrolled, acting like fools does not support the claims of racism and is nothing more than trying to force stereotypes where they don’t belong. This is a disgusting cheap shot and typical of liberals and their media channels.
I’m proud to be a Texas Aggie (Master’s graduate) and I ABHOR racism.

Don’t forget, international students are regularly attacked just off campus, this Halloween a student work klansman robes and felt free to walk around the community without penalty, there was an anti-affirmative action bake-sale, and bars just off campus were accused by the students of enforcing dress codes and charging different cover charges if patrons were ethnic or racial minorities.

The students have withdrawn from the university after meeting with university officials, according to an e-mail from President Gates.

A&M has a current enrollment of over 45,000 students of which over 35,000 – 37,000 live off campus. I guess Dr. Gates is supposed to watch over everyone to know who is naughty and nice. He must be the cousin of Santa Claus.
Everyone who has responded to this situation that blames Dr. Gates or Texas A&M or the State of Texas or some other institution as being responsible for this need to look in a mirror. You are ones condoning the real problem. The individuals need to be held accountable. Institutions aren’t responsible for an individual’s behavior. The individual is. Quit giving individuals an excuse. Hold them responsible. If someone, who happened to be a student at a particular university or claimed membership of a particular political party or lived in a particular State murdered your loved one, who would you want held responsible? The university, the political party, the State or the individual?
This isn’t political and has nothing to do with Dr. Gates other than these 3 insignificant fish in a huge pond at one of the largest universities in the country. Gates likely never even met them, much less knew who in the hell they are.
This is irresponsible reporting on the part of ABC trying to politicize this as evident by the multiple reponses on this thread that blame the President, a State, and a University for actions of these individuals. By the way, according to a news release from Texas A&M, these three students are no longer enrolled in school. The university has no further course of action they can take.
For those politicizing this who are also ridiculing Mike Jones for his comments, you are the kettle.

I am a student at Texas A&M and I am pretty sure that the students making this video were making an attempt at satire. These were not three dumb rednecks, they were kids saying that the university was racist, why else would they have the towel hanging from their pocket. The kids were trying to say that the university community had a problem and that it needed attention. Well they accomplished that goal and got themselves kicked off campus in the process. I can’t believe that all of you “intelligent” bloggers have no idea how to recognize sarcasm. That being said the students made a bad decision and jumped head first into a powder keg which has been made worse by the national attention that has been placed on our campus this week. There is racism at A&M, but it is not institutional, it is individual and no different from any community of 40,000+ people.

But an Aggie does not lie, cheat or steal nor tolerate those who do.
These people stole dignity – from themselves and from a specific group of people.
They are not and never will be Ags.
Furthermore, it’s up to the rest of us to not TOLERATE hate like this.

The article strikes home.
I was a senior financial analyst at Direct Energy in Houston this summer. Two ex-Aggies (A and M graduates) came into the cubicle I was working in and started making very disparaging remarks about gays. I said nothing the first time this happened. The second time it happened I filed a complaint with the Houston HR Office, that did NOTHING, and with Direct Energy’s corporate office in Toronto.
The two A and M graduates have since left the company…but as straight and gay friends of mine responded…what planet are these people on? The Houston Department HR Department bears some responsibility for not proactively preventing this…instead when I came to work, the HR head was no where to be found…(I emailed my complaint before going to work that day)…instead I unloaded on the Director of Accounting, a Pakistani National, who said to me: Jim, I know exactly how you feel. Everytime I go into an airport, I’m pulled aside and interrogate as a possible terrorist. He was great. But he was the ONLY ONE in the HOuston Office who could handle a difficult situation especially when a male gay employee complained to him about discrimination due to his Muslim religion and his gender. He was terrific. But I have nothing good to say about my financial reporting manager who I included in my complaint since he just sat there laughing at the antigay joking.

Realize that this isn’t an isolated incident. We treat this and other blatantly racist acts as anomalies, raise an eye brow when it’s thrown in our faces, wag our disapproving index fingers, then go about our lives like it just another kernel of mindless entertainment.
Wake up and do something about it.

First of all, I need to defend my professor. She told us on Thursday that a national news agency had called her and that she would probably be misquoted. As a professor of sociology, she seeks to link the individual to the institution, and since so many racist acts have happened lately, at what point do individuals start to become more than simply individuals? If she has an agenda, it is simply to help Aggies see the whole picture.
Moreover, one of the comments basically said that racism would never go away. However, race is a recent social invention, and while I am not saying that we should just ignore it because it has now seeped too far into the social conscience, racism does not have to be tolerated. People should not accept the unacceptable–that kind of thinking is the type of thing that makes racism an institutional problem, and that is how racism is an institutional problem at A&M.

Posted by: Kristina Yancey | November 10, 2006, 9:38 pm 9:38 pm

As a current student at Texas A&M University I find some of your comments beyond stupid. This video was made over 2 years ago, and was jsut recently put on the web. As far as politics goes, sorry to burst your bubbles but THIS WAS NOT DONE BY THE Democrate, Republican, Libitarians, Green party and any one else that you can think of. These 3 student view do not reflect on that of the other 44,997 student at my beloved University. These student are, as of Thursday, no longer part of the Aggie family, they were “forced” out of our school and withdrew from the university. In refrence to your Northgate comments. Yes we have had problem, but those are beign addressed by the student body as well as our administration. These student are adults, our administration is not every student parents, they have been raised by thier families in a way that we have not control over, we can only hope that they can over come thier bias.
I could go on for ever about what we are trying to do and tell you about our university and I CAN PROMISE YOU THIS DOES NOT HAPPEN ONLY AT A TEXAS UNIVERSITY!!!!! There are occurences of this every where in the nation, but because our president has been selected to become the secratary of defense it has brought even more attention to our beloved A&M. So who has more to gain from exploiting this? No one does we all hurt. Almost immediatly the student body got in action formed a rally and a protest about this video. SO with that said, look into your universities past and some of the ins and outs of it now and tell me you dont have problems

The students who were responsible for this tasteless tape may no longer be there but that doesn’t mean the miasma of racism is gone either.
The problem goes deeper than just a couple of stupid kids. People in general have become intolerant of each other. This means everyone, Republican, Democrat and the miscellaneous political parties that I’ve failed to mention.
How ironic that such ignorance is being perpetrated in a place where people go to learn.

Posted by: Fuzen | November 11, 2006, 12:34 am 12:34 am

Nobody dislikes A&M and its “thing” any more than I do, but I belive the vast majority of you are missing the point. For starters, these were clearly enlightened students who were trying to show that some racism still exists at their university. These are the very people who are trying to end racism on campus. 30 years ago there wouldn’t have been a single Aggie decrying racism on campus, as these two were clearly doing. Secondly, to hold an entire group of individuals responsible for the actiosn of two kids, even if you assume that they were indeed racist, is ridiculous. Why not hold all black people responsible for the Black Panthers shootings, or hold all Los Angelians responsible for the riots in Compton?
Are there some racists in Texas? Sure. Are there some in Boston? Absolutely. Are there blacks in Detroit who dislike white people when they might not know many? I bet there are.
Hold these two kids responsible for a lack of judgment, but don’t group all people (“prejudice”) from Texas or A&M and hold them morally responsible for the actions of a few 20-somethings inappropriately used a six pack of beer and a video camera.

Howdy my name is Betty. I’m a senior civil engineering major from Corpus Christi, Texas, but most importantly I’m the PROUDEST member of the fightin’ Texas Aggie class of 2006. WHOOP!!!
I am disgusted by the fact that this incident has caused so much hatred toward Texas A&M University. Texas A&M had no affiliation with what went on in that video and also, how in the hell has this become a political issue. Texas A&M University should not be condemned for a couple of bad seeds. Yes, racism needs to be stopped, but Texas A&M is not to blame. Why aren’t we blaming these student’s parents. Where are they? Why hasn’t ABC News interviewed the parents asking why they brought up their sons in this manner? You cannot tell me that these students were not racist before they were enrolled at A&M.
It also irritates me that Dr. Gates is being scrutinized over this. He has done everything in his power to make this a more diverse institution. Racist incidents, rape, assult, and other such incidents happen all over the world, not just at A&M. So why has A&M made headline news? Could it be that Dr. Gates is in the spotlight for being nominated for Secretary of Defense??? We need to look at the big picture before we start putting the blame on just one person, one institution, or one state. People are ready to blame others before they look into their own mirror.

I don’t think most of the bloggers on this site missed the point of the video. These boys just like to have fun. Just like girls like to have fun. What they have to do in their own rooms is their business, not the governments. The real shock is how everyone “can’t believe it!”. Let’s worry about the real racists in “sleeper cells” (wrong term used by the government again)… in England and elsewhere, developing plans to terrorize the West by trying to blow as many of us up as they can. That is the real racism we should be focusing on. Not a couple of boys that wanted to make a misguided gay porn video. The government has bigger concerns about boys seeking power through terrorism. The most extreme form of racism. We all get our feelings hurt from time to time. The terrorists want to hurt more than our feelings. Time to wake up students!

This is really amazing and the funny thing is it has nothing to do with democrats or republicans. Is there anybody out there but starry eyed peaceniks and our permanent victim class that think that this kind of behavior is abnormal? Use your mind and try thinking about this rationally for a moment if you can. Take a glance back at recorded history. What do you see? Unless you’ve missed it I’ll tell you what you see. Conflict. Conflict and hatred between and among humankind is as perenial as the rising sun. You’re not suprised when the sun rises are you? This doesn’t mean that it should be condoned. It is simply a fact of life. It isn’t the institutions fault. It’s not structural. That’s the same old card the victim class plays everytime something like this happens. The victim class and the media are always at the ready to tell us how bad the white people are. Interesting… We never hear about racism or hate crimes associated with anyone other than white people.

As an african-american i do not believe that the students in this college environment are racist. Students do things when in closed environments that they would not normally would do. At the present age of 15, I am aware of the jokes made against blacks. I am aware of the jokes against whites. Democratic or Republic, anyway about it’s a problem. It doesn’t matter whos fault it is, we need to worry about it happening again no matter who is in the position of power. And I would have a very strong if I came to know that these students didn’t have any type of discipline placed upon them.

I am a graduate of Texas A&M University. As a grad student I was not able to fully appreciate the rich undergradute traditions of Texas A&M. However, blatant racism did not seem to be one of them, although I must admit that it does exist in it’s most abhorrant form in Texas (witness the dragging death of a young black man just a few short years ago). The occasional off-color behaviour of students too young to understand that their actions may be extremely offensive to others does not give a true picture of the atmosphere of unity among most of the student body at A&M. Just attend one of our football games and listen to the cheers for a student of any race who scores a touchdown.

On behalf of the sociologists previously mentioned, I would like to point out that yes, there is an agenda. The agenda is to bring attention to a problem in society and in this University. The comments given by the Sociologists are value laden; this value is that of progressive social change.
Further, this video is only an extreme and overt example of the more subtle occurrences of racism/prejudices felt on Texas A&M campus.

A viewer wrote:What a ridiculous “controversy”? Why in the world would anyone believe that some video made by two or three idiots represents the attitudes of an entire university? And the answer is that it may not represent the entire university, it does bring to the forefront the racial issues that students have to deal with as a member of its student body. The environment is such the these students who made the video felt comfortable. I am an Aggie Alum (I graduated in 2000)and I am sad to here about this video because I do love being an Aggie, but not completely surprised. My first experience of ever being called the N-word was on this campus. There is implicit and explicit racism on that campus. Both need to bee addressed.

What is right or wrong in todays society is decided by the press. There are so many things that go on in our society and the press simply plays it up or plays it down. It acts as if it’s important or unimportant and that’s what becomes important to most of you.

“I attended a junior high school that had about 3 other black students. Another class was putting on a Thanksgiving play that involved historical figures and time travel. Rather than leave out George Washington Carver, they put black shoe polish on a white kid! It wasn’t funny then and its not funny now”
Maybe they weren’t trying to be funny but just trying to include a black man that is a part of history. I see nothing wrong with making a white person look black if they are doing it for a legitimate reason.

Every stupid and pathetic showing of racism whether it is BLack face on a white face or a noose around a neck, it has always been done by a white individual. Society like to play it down as a childless prank, nothing serious, but if is was reverse to them, then its a crime against their race. Every day you read about poor defensive white women getting murder, lost, raped and it makes national headlines, When women of any color other than white gets in trouble Absolutely nothing is read or done about it. In my hometown of North Carolina, A white 50 something year old woman armed robbed a bank!! She was placed
on a $65,000 bond and released. The paper says she was under dired stress that is why she robbed the bank. She probably will get no time for this, but let it had been a black, hispanic or asian women, they will get life. White Americans gets what they what they desire in life.

PAY CLOSE ATTENTION TO THIS POST AND READ MY LIPS. I am a student at Texas A&M and let me tell you that while we have a few in the closet racists, I have not met one person on this campus who was not upset about this video. This is happening because we live in the South and there are JUST A FEW leftover hotheads from the civil rights days. Gates has done what he can to stop this stuff and some other problems that have been happening around campus. But Gates can’t totally control what people with wrong attitudes do in their rooms and the videos they make. And Bush certainly has no control over that either.

Posted by: Jacob Wilson | November 12, 2006, 6:10 pm 6:10 pm

This has nothing to do with politics at all! These students have been expelled. The entire university was outraged that they did this. Gates pushed for their punishment.

Posted by: Jake Wilson | November 12, 2006, 6:16 pm 6:16 pm

These comments are instructive on both sides. Who can validate them? Anyone can claim to be a staunch supporter of Gates and know that A&M is OK, but then again, anyone can claim to be a student who has seen the abuses. This is BS all together. I find it strange that yet once again, whatever side you may find yourself on, there is another provocative story that has been released right after a political appointment. I’m beginning to wonder who has to profit from this. The politicians, or actually the media who releases this garbage? Who gets the advertising dollars? Follow the money. That will tell you the tale.

I’m currently a student at Texas A&M and I’m very proud of my school and my fellow peers. Of course there are going to be incidents of racism; they can happen anywhere in this nation or in the world for that matter depending on different circumstances.
There is a comment about the sociologist professors and their “agenda”. First of all, I am currently in a class of Professor Valdez and she told us that she was asked to comment about this situation. She went on to state that she was worried about being misquoted. I don’t know what all she said in that interview as I am not privy to 100% of what she said. However, that being said, it would be a far stretch to say that she has ever let any personal views, whatever they may be, to slip into her teaching. This is because I can’t be sure what personal, sociological, or political views she possesses because she values the importance of remaining neutral in the classroom in order to best pass on the teachings.
As to one student’s comments that there is no systematic racism on campus… Well, to put it frankly, I’m White, have been White all my life, and it appears that I will remain White the rest of my life until I die. It sounded like it’s a good chance that this fellow student of mine could fall under the same category as I do. If that is the case, I have no idea how they would know whether or not there is systematic racism present on campus or not. There have been repeated assaults on international (non-White) students in a particular area just off campus over the past year and a half and the College Station police department has been alerted to these problems. It is their job, not the jobs of the Texas A&M administration, to see that these acts are punished and they have alerted the student body of these incidents and assured us that these acts are being thoroughly investigated. These acts sound to me as possibly a case of systematic racism, though one would have trouble connecting them to the institution of Texas A&M.

The Texas A&M “racist” video was not made by racist students.
It was a video intended to expose the cruelty and stupidity of racism.
I”m surprised and appalled that a member of the Texas A&M faculty is
allowing us to be misrepresented here.
That video is not an accurate representation of our culture’s views.
Please exercise balanced journalism by running a story featuring Dr.
Gate’s diversity initiatives.
The present story is misleading and disgusting.

No consulation intended, the University of Illinois also has witnessed several similar episodes of racial strife. Moreover, the Illinois Board of Trustees actualy promote racial stereotyping on Urbana-Champaign campus. After 16 years of discord and racial polarization, the Illinois Trustees adamantly cling to their fake Indian mascot, Chief Illiniwek. The permissive environment for racial stereotyping at Illinois promotes a hostile and abusive environment directed not only towards Native Americans, but towards other ethnic groups. The ring of insitutional racism at A&M has a kindred resonance at UIUC.

I grew up in central Texas…not far from A&M or from UT in Austin. I attended UT while I had many friends go to A&M. My Aggie friends changed. They became extreme conservatives, racially biased, and quite arrogant. There is a culture at this school that is not compatible with modern America. The problem this video demonstrates isn’t a problem with the individuals involved, rather it is a problem with this University as a whole. This school is a problem. The bonfire should’ve been a clue to you all…this video represents the same mentality…someone please investigate this school!

Right down route 6 at Baylor University, some students dressed up as a pregnant nun and took a photograph with Baylor’s president, John Lilley. This student was allowed to march in a Baylor-sponsored parade. And the law school’s alumni magazine published an article praising this group that sponsored this anti-Catholic bigotry, the Noze Brothers. Yet, the national media did nothing. Why? Because, in the words of historian Phil Jenkins, anti-Catholicism is the last acceptable prejudice.
At Penn, the president was photographed with someone dressed up as a terrorist. No problem. She apologizes; it’s over.

I am tired of everyone say he she is racist just becuase you don’t agree with what they are saying or doing. I mean noone went around say the wayans went around as white blonds acting stupid well guess what it offend me. I guess that makes them racist. And don’t say this is different becuase it is slaves. When everyone feels free to say things about anything but black and only black can say any- thing offending. Well, when you have black people calling each other the n word what you think other people who listen to that music won’t say it tooo?*#

Just because Robbie can’t spell “suspension” doesn’t mean all black people can’t spell. Just because 2 ex-students are racist doesn’t mean all Aggies are as well. No one is to blame but the kids and their parents. The problems with this country stem not from the fact that this video is made, they stem from the fact that it is sensationalized, and then everyone spends all their time and energy trying to figure out who is to blame. Blame the kids, kick them out of the school, which was done under Gates’ leadership, and prosecute them under hate crime laws if they apply.

I too grew up in central Texas, and I chose to go to A&M while several of my friends went to University of Texas. However, I believe it was my friends who changed. Almost all of them are more liberal, and 3 of them came out of the closet (not that there is anything wrong with that.) Don’t blame government or politicians for you lot in life. Everyone knows Al Gore worked on his family tobacco farm groing up, so by the logic I see on this post, I will sue him when I get lung cancer. He is no more responsible for cancer than Gates or Bush or (insert any politician’s name) is responsible for racism.

Posted by: jonathan | November 14, 2006, 11:29 pm 11:29 pm

this is not the fault of politicians or of robert gates or of A&M traditions or anything else except the ignorance of the kids in the video.
i am a former student of Texas A&M University. while i was a student, robert gates took over as president. one of his major achievements as pres. came in his first year. vision 20/20 was set up to allow more opportunity for minorities and become more diverse. at first it met with criticism b/c “the ‘good ole boys’ were going to get pushed to the wayside.” but after about a year or two, when that didnt happen and students started to understand diversity, it became more accepted.
while i was at Texas A&M, i took a class called speech communications 335 – intercultural communication. we discussed and analyzed racism, among several other contraversial issues. the minority students in our class mentioned their experiences with racism and few of their stories were about students at A&M. racism at TAMU is no worse than anywhere else in the nation. i think this whole thing is over Gates becoming a national figure again and people looking for something to trash him with. but from what i understand, those students are no longer at A&M due to expulsion. as presient of the university, there is not much more he can do.
i bleed maroon and can tell you that people who put out videos like that do not. the aggie spirit hinges on respect for all. sometimes i guess a few students miss that fact…but i would imagine that most of them usually dont make it all the way through the curriculum either.

Obviously, many of you who have responded here have not only never been to the campus of Texas A&M, but you have also apparently never been to Texas.
When I was at A&M many years ago there were 40,000 students. I don’t even know the numbers now. It is beyond idiotic to conclude that three morons represent the entirity of the caucasion student body of a huge university. Some of you even extrapolated that out to the entire state of Texas!! Ha!
Regarding racism…It is a hateful and ignorant prejudice that extends across all (and I do mean ALL) races. I recall clearly the t-shirts worn by some students on campus when I was there. They said, “It’s a black thang. You wouldn’t understand”. Is that racial pride or racism? I don’t know. But what I do know is the young woman wearing that t-shirt only represented herself. She did not represent the entire student body any more than those idiots in black face do.

I spent 6 years at Texas A&M University, working my way through and picking up two degrees. Along the way I was extremely involved in both on-campus and off-campus activities, from parties to various student professional organizations. As a businessman in Colorado now, I still proudly display my Texas A&M Former Student stickers on my vehicles, and I always will. I fly an Aggie flag out front at my home. I came from nothing, and I’m working daily to become something for the betterment of not only myself, and my family, but for mankind. I turned down scholarships to other schools, just so I could know the honor of being an Aggie. To this day, I am honored to be an Aggie. Producers at ABC should spend a week at Texas A&M University. I’m sure if they did, they would be blown away at how special and unique and academically incredible the school is. While there, I had Asian friends, Hispanic friends, African-American friends, etc. Two of my best friends at A&M were African-American. They consistently talked of racism back in their hometowns. They never, ever, once talked to me about racism they felt on campus or in the community. Does racism exist at A&M, I’m sure it does, on a very limited scale. It has always exixted. It will continue to exist to some degree. It exists to a degree on every college campus in this country. But to label a respected institution like Texas A&M University as racist based on the actions of three expelled students, is absolutely ridiculous, and obviously motivated by an attempt to create a story or some sort of news worthy controversy. Those two African American friends of mine at A&M are still friends of mine to this day. In the true spirit of being an Aggie, I would gladly lay down my life for either of them today. They are good men, and I admire and respect them greatly. They also happen to be Aggies. Me? I’m actually the product of a very racist, bigoted, prejudiced family. I credit Texas A&M University for helping me be nothing of the three. Gig’em Aggies, and God bless Texas A&M University. The best decision I ever made was getting an education there.

I am amazed at the ignorance of the American society. People actually blame anyone and everything before placing the responsibility with the individuals. Many of you are right it is a conspiracy of Republicans and all 46,000 white supremists at Texas A&M. Absolutely amazing, many of you need to find a job or a life.

Posted by: Clay, San Angelo, TX | November 16, 2006, 11:27 am 11:27 am

All this back and forth about A&M being a racist institution and Republicans and Democrats and all this other stuff is BS…and I don’t mean Bachelor of Science.
I went to A&M in the early 90s, coming from a pretty diverse college town in North Texas (Denton). What I found was that A&M’s student population at the time tended to draw heavily from mostly Anglo rural areas and mostly Anglo suburban areas of the Metroplex, Austin and Houston. I’m guessing that’s probably not changed a whole lot.
Many people I met had never been around African Americans before and that didn’t change at A&M. I was amazed at the amount of naive racism I encountered in fellow Ags, but I think a large part of that simply came from these folks’ lack of diversity in their backgrounds, not because they were card-carrying Klansmen.
Basically, it was a matter of experience; not having diversity in your life makes you more susceptible to racism because you’ve never been in a situation where you’re a minority…or a coequal group…before. Now pack tens of thousands of folks with that kind of vanilla background together on a campus and you had A&M in the early 1990s.
Does that make A&M as an institution racist? No. Should we be surprised something like this came out of the student body at A&M? No. I wouldn’t trade anything for my time at A&M; I learned more and changed more through classes, sports and Bonfire in those three years than at any other point in my life.
This has squat to do with Republicans, Democrats, Robert Gates, George Bush or Bill Clinton.
It has everything to do with some folks who just need to grow up.

Why is it that Dave Chapelle can make a fortune off of witty race based skits (that do contain hateful dialog), but three students who make a video no more offending than some of Dave’s exerpts are instantly condemned. Could it be because Dave is black and these three students are white? I believe that is the case and I find it funny that so many people fight for equality between the races but as soon as the tables are turned black people receive more lenient criticism for something that ended so long ago…slavery. All I can do is sit back and laugh. Please remember that Texas A&M is comprised of roughly 45,000 students so don’t make judgement from the actions of three.

Posted by: DC | November 16, 2006, 5:32 pm 5:32 pm

slavery did not end long ago, it only expanded to include all poor people. 30-year home mortgages? Where are the 30-year incomes?
Raise the retirement age? Only longer indentured servitude, because your social security cash has been stolen.
Racism is only a by-product of groups banding together along stereotypical lines to fight for the crumbs left by the “elite”. Dave #1: Did you really just call me a racist without knowing anything about me besides the fact that I attend Texas A&M University? It seems like you are the type of person that generalizes a group of people based on one common fact. I believe the same is true with racism. I am not racist and neither are any of my friends at A&M, but I really don’t need to prove that to you, you seem quite ignorant – and ignorance is bliss!
Dave #2: I’m not sure when you attended Texas A&M or if you really went here at all, but I have never heard a professor make a racist comment in the three years I’ve been here. In fact, out of my 6 professors and T.A.’s this semester, only 2 are white. And PLEASE tell me where there is racism on the bathroom walls, because I sure have yet to see it. Thanks, and Gig’ em!

I personally think all of the attendees should have had SOME sort of consequence, rather than Larry alerting the media and doing nothing about it. It is like he only wanted to embarrass the university but not hold the few students who attended responsible, thus making it look like ALL of the law school was guilty for the stupidity and racism of a few.

Some are complaining on Facebook and elsewhere that A&M is racist and too evangelical Christian. Well, as an evangelical, I’m outraged and disgusted by all forms racism and sexism. During my education, some of my best friends were international students, few of whom were Christians. They’ve been lifelong friends.
Why is it, though, that so many of the Aggie males that I’ve known HAVE been both racist and sexist? If I were racist-leaning and yet (paradoxically) wanting an education, would I feel more at home in College Station, Lubbock, Waco, Houston, or Austin? I’m thinking C.S. or maybe Lubbock or Waco. Definitely not Austin.
