U.S. Embassy Asks Bush Twins to Leave Country

Amid a growing barrage of front-page headlines, U.S. embassy officials "strongly suggested" President Bush’s twin daughters, Jenna and Barbara Bush, cut short their trip to Buenos Aires because of security issues, U.S. diplomatic and security sources tell ABC News. But the girls have stayed on, celebrating their 25th birthday over the weekend and producing even more headlines about their activities. Officials say the media coverage upstaged publicity plans for the new U.S. Ambassador Anthony Wayne, who had only recently arrived in the country. The Argentinean press blitz followed a report on "The Blotter" last week that Barbara Bush’s purse and cell phone were stolen last weekend while dining at the popular San Telmo outdoor marketplace despite being guarded by the Secret Service. Stories of the twins’ visit took on wild proportions in the Argentinean press. One tabloid headline had the young women running nude in the hallway of their hotel, a report the hotel staff denied to ABC News. According to sources, the U.S. embassy encouraged the two girls to cut their stay short because the added attention was making their security very difficult.  But to the dismay and anger of some U.S. embassy and security staff, the girls stayed on.  Thursday night, an ABC News producer was able to walk into their hotel unchecked and engage Barbara Bush in conversation while she checked her e-mail on a computer in the lobby. Jenna sat talking with friends on a sofa nearby. No Secret Service agents were anywhere to be seen in the lobby, according to ABC News’ Joe Goldman. And yesterday the Bush twins were spotted at the Sunday soccer matches, wearing team jerseys and sitting in the owner’s box, watching Argentina’s top team Boca Juniors compete. Several games have been canceled due to violence in the crowds this year. In fact, last weekend no spectators were allowed to attend the match other than season ticket holders. Sources tell ABC News the twins plan to stick to their original itinerary and stay in Buenos Aires until Thursday.  *** Official response from the US Embassy in Argentina: We have seen a report from news sources stating that Embassy officials strongly suggested that President Bush’s daughters curtail their visit in Argentina. This is false, as are other aspects of the report referring to the Embassy’s position on the visit. The Embassy welcomes the visit and has provided close support and cooperation.

You really cannot expect these young girls to take their security issues seriously, but their parents, being the President and First Lady, surely ought to be able to order their daughters home. Apparently he isn’t any better at being a father than he is at being a President (and this, sadly, from someone who voted for him)……

once again, why is this news? so what they are the daughters of the dumbest leader on this planet? I do not wish them ill but, once again, I personally do not care to know that most likely it is my tax dollars paying for their security and financing a senseless war.

Does no one else find it odd that ABC doesn’t have a problem with the fact that these two 25-year-old women are repeatedly referred to as “girls” throughout this article?

Is USA so bad at security that it cannot guarantee the safety of the president’s children when they travel overseas?
Let the young women enjoy themselves. But, why aren’t the Secret Service standing watch over them in the hotel lobby?

“…a report on ‘The Blotter’ last week that Barbara Bush’s purse and cell phone were stolen last weekend while dining at the popular San Telmo outdoor marketplace….”
Which raises the question of exactly what the purse and the cell phone were eating….

BELIEVE IT OR NOT, THEY HAVE ACTUALLY BEEN GOOD FOR AMERICA’S IMAGE IN ARGENTINA AND LATIN AMERICA.
MOST LATINS SEE AMERICANS AS BEING STUCK UP AND DISTANT. THEY ARE INTERACTING WITH PEOPLE ON ALL LEVELS. THE SOCCER MATCH THEY WENT TO SEE WAS IN BOCA JUNIORS HOME STADIUM, IN A NEIGHBORHOOD THAT IS IN THE MOST WORKING CLASS AREA OF BUENOS AIRES.

Holy Horrors – an ABC reporter was able to talk to Barbara Bush without being attacked by the Secret Service! Like an ABC reporter who covers the Bush’s is the same as a random person walking around.
Typical journalists, trying to make up news.

It’s just sad that the twins don’t understand what effect they have on their father – regardless of whether any of us agree with his politics – any public figure and his or her spouse / child will be scrutinized more closely than an average person’s family.
That being said, if this is all about upstaging an ambassador, then that is sad.
If it is about national security or our relationship with Argentina, then so be it, get them home now.

I don’t understand what the Bush twins did to warrant the Argentine government to ask them to leave. The government thinks that they are a security risk? What do they think 2 young girls are going to do? Overthrow the government? Start a riot? Over reacting? or Anti-American.

Posted by: Molly O'Neil | November 27, 2006, 2:44 pm 2:44 pm

ABC really wants to trash the Bush family at any cost.
I don’t remember Chelsea Clinton getting this much scrunity and if so, not in a negative way.

Posted by: Lisa | November 27, 2006, 2:45 pm 2:45 pm

If it’s true that an ABC producer could engage Barbara while no Secret Service personnel were to be seen, and Jenna was similarly unprotected, this is a very serious and dangerous situation. We Americans don’t realize how patriotic and protective of our people we are until the worst happens.

Posted by: AG | November 27, 2006, 2:47 pm 2:47 pm

What are these two girls trying to start, another war. We the American people cannot expect the secret service to protect them if they insist on making themselves targets for anyone to take revenge on them for what has happened in the Middle East. Just goes to prove that some of the very rich feel that they are untouchable and get away with anything they want to. Just goes to show also how they were raised without respect for others and their wellbeing.

Posted by: Billie Bob | November 27, 2006, 2:50 pm 2:50 pm

its not about what the twins did! do you not understand that if it is easy to get to the twins then anyone can get to the twins? Imagine the power a rogue nation or terrorist would have over the United States if one of the twins were kidnapped? Argentina wants them to leave because it is too hard to keep them safe- as is evident by a reporter being able to just walk up to one of the twins and start talking to her. The twins and the President should know this and be more responsible

Posted by: John Jouett | November 27, 2006, 2:51 pm 2:51 pm

The U.S. EMBASSY asked the girls to leave because they are behaving in a manner that puts themselves in danger. It sounds as though they are acting irresponsibly even for an average U.S. citizen in a S.A. country, and they are the president’s daughters (that means, they are in even more danger).

Posted by: Lisa | November 27, 2006, 2:51 pm 2:51 pm

The story should be focused on why it’s apparently so difficult for the Secret Service to secure the twins. The sensationlistic press coverage is inane; what are two 25-year-old daughters of the president doing wrong in attending soccer matches, hitting the clubs and or being a victim of a purse snatching? Where is the story?

So why aren’t the dear twins signing up for duty in Iraq? For their father’s holy war to spread democracy around the Middle East. We’re short of manpower there, and it’d be a great way to show the world that Bush and Cheney are absolutely right about how well things are going in Iraq.

Posted by: John Woods | November 27, 2006, 2:52 pm 2:52 pm

To the previous poster (Molly), please re-read the article. It was the US Embassy that asked them to leave, not the Argentine government. The request was made, ostensibly, for their safety, not for the collective safety of Argentina.

Posted by: Joe Hoff | November 27, 2006, 2:52 pm 2:52 pm

Molly: There’s nothing in the article about the Argentinian gov’t asking them to leave. It’s the US Embassy in Argentina that wants them to go home.

Molly, read the article.
“U.S. embassy officials “strongly suggested” President Bush’s twin daughters, Jenna and Barbara Bush, cut short their trip to Buenos Aires”.

I applaud their moxie. Good for them! Let them enjoy their lives as any 25 year old girls would like to.

Posted by: Scott | November 27, 2006, 2:56 pm 2:56 pm

Let Them Play!
Let’s get real. These girls just want to have fun. I believe the words are more like “experience the culture and savoring the local flavors…” versus “the Bush twins beam with pride over Argentine-U.S. relations…”. An itinerary was well thought out and should be explored to its fullest, but maybe the girls can skip a trip to the shopper’s bazaar or the latest fashion show/charity event. It’s about that pesky paparrazzi and tabloids looking for the next “international incident,” cataloguing every step and stop by these young ladies. Maybe the Argentine gov’t can step up, provide a little more security and then sit back and enjoy the publicity about the Bush twins travel to the great country of Argentina. The US Embassy should shut up and back the girls and work with the local police and gov’t.

Posted by: Tom | November 27, 2006, 2:56 pm 2:56 pm

It’s about the potential for something stupid … like a kidnapping by some terror type or political extremist looking for attention. The girls are adults but also appear a bit numb … but that’s not news is it.

Molly – what article are you responding to? No where in THIS article does it say the Argentine government asked them to leave. It says the US Embassy in the headline. It says US Embassy in the body of the article.
So, you should be asking, the US Embassy thinks they’re a security risk? What does the US Embassy think 2 young girls are going to do? Overthrow the government? Start a riot? Over reacting? Or Anti-American.
So, you think the US Embassy is Anti-American, huh?
See how YOU over reacted?

The bush twins were asked by U.S. Embassy officials to cut short their trip, not the Argentinian Government. I’m sure the Argentinian government doesn’t mind the negative press generated by the Bush twins, since americans already have a bad rap in most of the world for its arrogance … the Bush twins merely feed this view.

But, why should they need to leave the country? Boy if they cloistered themselves in Washington you guys would accuse them of being small minded snobs. Cut them some slack….

Posted by: Jimmy | November 27, 2006, 2:59 pm 2:59 pm

I’m glad President Bush’s daughters get to enjoy the night life and soccer in Argentina while our son’s and daughters get to fight, suffer, get maimed, and die in Iraq because Saddam tried to kill President Bush’s daddy. As the elder Barbara Bush said “You don’t mess with the Bushs’.”
They would be doing a much better service to our county by visiting our wounded at Army and V.A. Hospitals instead of living the life of royalty.

It’s sad how much attention the children of politicians get. Let them live their lives. It was bad enough that Chelsea Clinton had to go through puberty when her father was in office. Now these girls get looked down on for doing what any girls their age would do. Let them take their birthday vacation. They would be targets for a kidnapping even in the US.

lots of critical readers out there, eh. Here’s one: “No Secret Service agents were anywhere to be seen in the lobby, according to ABC News’ Joe Goldman.” Lets all assume Joe Golman knows every secret service agent! Isn’t that a bit like saying, “No air marshal was visible on the plane?” Kind of defeats the purpose if an idiot news reporter can ID them all doesn’t it? Goes to show that as a result of little or no reading comprehension, people like Billie Bob and Dan can make far reaching conclusions about them watching a soccer game from the owners box…

I like their independence. No one had a problem with Chelsea Clinton’s independence. Just because the Republicans screwed up, doesn’t mean that the Bush girls have to submit to the gloating desires of others. Sounds like a bunch of sour grapes. How DARE the Bush girls travel the world and broaden their knowledge of other cultures. Isn’t that what Dems say Bush lacked? A clear understand of other cultures? Yet they don’t want the twins experience and grow as individuals. Are these people worried that one of the Bush daughters could be a much more effective elected official than their father?

Last I heard, they didn’t have a DWI like Gore’s son did. How about the behaviours of some of the Kennedy clan? The big story here is that the Secret Service is NOT doing their job. BTW, one of the Bush twins is a volunteer and the other works at an inner city school in Washington. What is Chelsea doing? Oh yea, making hundreds of thousands of dollars doing PR work. Lovely. The U.S. embassy sees risks, but Babs and Jenna want to party it up for another four days.
Wonder how much this little romp is costing us in security and the like?

Posted by: Verchiel | November 27, 2006, 3:08 pm 3:08 pm

Ummm. Let’s see. Nowhere do I see where the twins did anything wrong. The Secret Service, on the other hand, seems to have difficulty protecting them. THEY are the embarassment, not the twins. The comments about President and his children are uncalled for and once again shows the bitter hatred and disrespect some people within certain political parties have for the Bush clan. And that is a sad commentary upon those who hold those opinios.

Posted by: Alan | November 27, 2006, 3:08 pm 3:08 pm

You people are ridiculous, if anyone is at fault, its the secret service. They’re the ones that let the twins go unprotected on more than one occasion.
Let them have their fun.
Some of you want to blame or vilify any Bush whenever possible.
Next you’ll blame a Bush for causing Katrina or your next snowstorm.

Posted by: Jordon | November 27, 2006, 3:08 pm 3:08 pm

Where are the Secret Service? They need to hire better security detail for the Bush family. Things like a purse getting stolen in a restaurant should NEVER happen. I blame the secret service, not the Bush family. The Bush girls and Barbara should be able to go wherever they want to whenever they want to. The SS staff just needs to up their focus and attention to the Bush family. What are they doing over there?

All it shows me is that they are determined to live their lives, and try to have as normal a life as is humanly possible given they are lied about in the press, hounded by the press, and subjected to ignorant comments (such as those above on this thread). Leave them alone. They are free to be who and what they want, just as you or I.

Posted by: Kim | November 27, 2006, 3:09 pm 3:09 pm

Some have commented that the Bush twins are ignoring the advice of the Secret Service. I’d like to review that article. In everything I’ve read, the Secret Service has never admitted any risk being above their abilities.
It’s our glorious State department which is trying to manipulate the girls. Using the clever tactics they learned in foreign service 101, they told the girls that they’d better leave or it might be “bad”.
The girls probably asked their Sercret Service handlers if their was any danger and the T-men just laughed at the embassy officials.
I say, let them be have their fun…as long as they don’t impact their cousin’s run for president in 2024 (Go George Prescott Bush).

Two daughters of the leader of the free world. If they are kidnapped, international crisis ensues. They seem to have more freedom than warranted, given their relationship to the President. So, for security, the U.S. officials at the U.S. Embassy there urged them to leave. That’s the story. Nothing else. No spoiled children. No foolhardy presidential behavior. None of that. All I see on this page is a bunch of Bush haters who want to spew their hatred online for all to see. Pitiful, petulant public. Get a life.

What is sad about this is that people don’t know how to read or comprehend what they are reading. Where, for instance as a previous respondent stated, the Argentinian government asked them to leave??? It was the US embasy personnel that asked them to leave. No wonder people still think Iraq had something to do with 9/11 !!!

If Al-Qada wasn’t paying attention now (hard to believe) then I’m sure it is now. The twins seem to have the same mentality as America pre-9/11. It can’t happen to me.

Posted by: jr | November 27, 2006, 3:19 pm 3:19 pm

Sounds to me that the U.S. Embassy and Secret Service security forces failed to do their job of providing protection in the first place, in allowing common thieves to steal Barbara’s bag and cell phone. And rather than providing the protection they should, they have decided to solve THEIR problem by trying to get the twins to leave the country.
Also, poor Anthony Wayne is upset that his installation as new Ambassador is upstaged by the twins, who are undoubtedly more photogenic and interesting to talk to than some career diplomat whose purpose in life is to keep anyone from “rocking the boat.”

I’m sure these two gals have minds of their own. There is absolutely nothing wrong with 2 twenty-somethings taking vacation to a foreign country; it happens all the time and it has nothing to do with their father’s politics or whether they are spoiled or not. I cut the umbilical cord long ago and live my own life and allow my parents to live theirs. I don’t understand the connection between their vacation and their father’s politics.

Wild? Spoiled? Unruly? What article did all of you read? Barbara had lunch at a popular marketplace (the nerve!), then they were seen in the lobby checking e-mail (gasp! shocking!) and talking with friends (unbelievable!). Then they went to a soccer game (the horror!).
Let’s get some perspective folks. The only thing out of control here is the anti-Bush sentiment.

Posted by: Andy | November 27, 2006, 3:24 pm 3:24 pm

Why should they leave? They have done nothing wrong. The Bush girls are US citizens and the State Department should be representing their interests.
I think the embassy doesn’t like the bad press about Argentina (high crime) because it makes diplomacy more difficult. This is not the fault of the Bush girls, though.

I don’t understand what the Bush twins did to warrant the Argentine government to ask them to leave. The government thinks that they are a security risk? What do they think 2 young girls are going to do? Overthrow the government? Start a riot? Over reacting? or Anti-American.
It’s amazing that seemingly educated adults can read news articles and completely mis-comprehend the story. Nowhere does it say that the Argentinian government has asked the Bush twins to leave. The American Embassy in Argentina has “strongly-suggested” that they leave amid security issues.
Of course, ABC News purposely skews the story with their false headline, “US Embassy asks Bush Twins to Leave Country.” This is an attempt to make readers, like Douglas Lang, think that what didn’t happen, happened. There is a profound difference between a government officially asking people to leave the country and government officials, unofficially “strongly suggesting” that people leave the country.
News and reality is very subjective to ABC News.

The Bush twins are young arrogant twenty-somethings who could care less about security or no security. What about the Secret Service? They’re the ones who don’t seem to be doing their jobs. Still, when your government says it’s not safe to stay, you’d be a fool to ignore them.
As far as the twins being kidnapped, it would sure be an interesting test of our “we don’t negotiate with terrorists” policy.

Posted by: Shawn | November 27, 2006, 3:25 pm 3:25 pm

Maybe a tour of duty in Iraq would straiten them out. The thought of them running wild and nude in Iraq with assault weapons brings a smile to my face. This way the Bush clan could demonstrate their support for a lost cause. Freedom is on the march!

i personally like the twins. As kids go they are far from the extremes some of our teens and young adults exhibit. Somehow I think george and lara don’t necessarily disapprove. I don’t think it would be that difficult to get them back to the states if that is what the parents want. Too bad the new ambassador was upstaged. My gut is that the Argentines are much more interested in the twins than him. I know that when Gabriella Sabatini was still playing tennis i was much more interested in her than i was in some Argentine ambassador

Whats with all the posts with them being “wild and unruly”? All I see in the article is that they went to dinner, checked email in the lobby and talked to friends. Oh my, so wild and out of control!!!
Also, I think the real problem here is why our Secret Service is so lax in their protection of Barbra and Jenna. I thought they were the best (which they are)!!! It is their job to protect our goverment officals and their familes.

Posted by: Matt | November 27, 2006, 3:28 pm 3:28 pm

Odd behavior? Spoiled? Stubborn?
What I find humorous is that some people’s apparent dislike for the president totally warps their thought process. It is quite disgusting what some of you are saying. These girls are doing what young people do: going on vacation, dining out, taking in a game. One should not have to be called spoiled or be accused of spending daddy’s money just for living life. I did the same thing, traveling to Europe when I was 25, and I did it on my own dime with money I earned from work. Both of these girls have jobs and make money on their own, regardless of their family, so why should that matter? The fact is, some people blow a thousand bucks (or more) on a television or whatever; others travel. Some of you should climb out of your caves and try it sometime. Who cares what they choose to do, anyway? They have every right to do what they are doing.
As for the security, if it weren’t for certain idiots in the media feeling like they are obligated to publicize every tidbit on earth, some of which ought to be kept quiet, hardly anyone would have known about their travels. Hence, there would not have been nearly as much of a threat as there is now that the whole world knows where they are.
No, the problem is not the Bush twins. It is people who spout off because they’re looking to blame someone else for their own smallness.

Posted by: Pat | November 27, 2006, 3:28 pm 3:28 pm

Posted by: Paul | November 27, 2006, 3:31 pm 3:31 pm

The comments posted here are pretty one sided. When American citzens can’t freely travel around the globe we have a problem. The Bush daughters didn’t swear to an oath of office, so their travels aren’t the government’s business. Argentina is getting a publicity boast; hard to see any reason why they aren’t happy. The only whiners and criers here are the US diplomatic personnel who’s job it is to serve, not to raise a stink because they don’t care for the twin’s father.

Posted by: BillS | November 27, 2006, 3:31 pm 3:31 pm

The point is that their security is at risk. A purse stolen from underneath the secret service and an reporter engages them in an interview without the secret service in sight. What’s the message in those acts alone? The fact that they intend to “stay the course” can predicts another if not more headlines, hopefully not of a sinister nature.

Posted by: ric | November 27, 2006, 3:31 pm 3:31 pm

First, I don’t know what difference it makes if they’re in Buenos Aires or Bangor – they are kidnap targets regardless of where they are and are SUPPOSED to be protected by the Secret Service. If they don’t have protection then it’s not their fault, it’s the Secret Service’s fault. Their location doesn’t change that they’ll be targets and I don’t think it’s reasonable to ask them to stay locked in their rooms for a full 8 years. It doesn’t sound like they’re doing anything outrageous – eating outdoors – ooooh. Going to a soccer match – wow, they live on the edge. I’m not sure what stock I would put in a tabloid reporting that they are running naked through the Hotel….I do think it’s funny that the Ambassador feels upstaged! Those state department lifers are prima donnas mad that they don’t get more respect or $$$$ for becoming bureaucrats.

Posted by: Robbie | November 27, 2006, 3:31 pm 3:31 pm

The girls have done to warrant this coverage other than Brain Ross and ABC’s vindictivness about anything Bush. I understand that the ambassador might want them out but as free citizens they have as much right as anybody to stick to their agenda. I would say though that it appears that the Secret Service is laying down on the job and President Bush should have a full investigation as to why the clowns that are paid to protect his daughters aren’t around.

To answer all the questions about why the twins are not in Iraq. Simple. They took John Kerry’s advice an studied and did well in school so they wouldn’t get stuck in Iraq. Isn’t it fabulous that they are so bipartisan that they would take advice from a Democrat?

What are people thinking? GIRLS? they aren’t girls they are women. They have been trapped in the White House for 6 years and need to cut loose a little. Yes they may be making a foolish mistake, but not in a 25 year old’s opinion. YOU never made a slip in judgement at 25? They happen to be the President’s daughters, but now at 25 first and foremost they are adults and did not chose to be the daughters of a US President. Argentina is over-reacting, yes something could happen to them, and Argentina is being thoughtful to try and make their stay a littler safer, but they don’t have to, let them be 25 and on their own.

Leave ‘em alone and let ‘em have a good time. They’re great crazy kids and I think it would be really fun to know them! They are definitely cooler than the likes of kids we’ve seen spawned by Presidents in a long long time. Rock on Bush Gals!!! Viva Argentina!

These women are free to travel and learn different cultures and exchange ideas and pursue happiness. Argentina is full of polo players…race cars drivers and worldclass soccer players. The sad brief war they engaged in with the U.K. back in the 80s showed the daring of their pilots. Yes these folks involved in this story are rich and elite and also happen to be the next generation of leaders. Let the twins have a good visit a good cultural exchange. Don’t you believe for a moment that they are not protected. Relax…move on.

Gee I’ll just bet any one of our soldiers serving in Iraq or Afghanistan would love to party in Brazil, Aregentina, or HOME for that matter. It’s too bad they can’t but they are fighting the Bush girls Daddy’s WAR over in Iraq, getting killed and maimed. These girls are turing out exactly like their Dad, rich spoiled and defient. Wonder if their Daddy will bail them out of all the messes like his Daddy has done and is still doing! Maybe Bush better save some of those prayers for his daughters, they seem to feel their above everyone including the Secret Service, bet if anything happened though, they and their parents would be crying to everyone how the Secret Service didn’t do their job. These girls are given everything and anything. Funny I don’t seem to remember Chelsea Clinton being a problem during her father’s term. I guess when you feel your a priveliged person anything goes. I’ll be glad when the whole fam damily is gone from D.C.

Posted by: Sue Filutze | November 27, 2006, 3:48 pm 3:48 pm

Would you expect anything other than the Bush twins to refuse to leave Argentina at the request of their own government? They have important partying left to do. Like father, like daughters. This kind of self-centered behavior is exactly what one would expect from members of the Bush clan, who have never had bosses, never had real jobs, and never had to earn a real living. The rules exist are for other people (read plebians).

Posted by: Bob | November 27, 2006, 3:48 pm 3:48 pm

Don’t blame them, they are just staying the course like their old man. I will say this though: I miss the good ole days when all we heard about the President’s child was about how much she has achieved, not how hard she partied.

Posted by: Robert | November 27, 2006, 3:48 pm 3:48 pm

Just think: every birthday celebrates another year that the Bush Twins have failed to find meaningful work. Or work, period. Can’t be bad. Even Paris Hilton has done more to earn her keep in that time. It’s about time we started calling them ‘the Bush heiresses’, because that’s how they behave.

Posted by: Nick S | November 27, 2006, 3:49 pm 3:49 pm

They are down there getting acclimated. Remember, Dubya just bought a ranch in Paraguay and one of the twins just visited it to check it out.
They want to get to know their new home as the whole family will have to leave the US very soon.
Being 25 and having fun isn’t a crime, even if your last name is Bush.
Being part of the 9/11 lie is, and their papa will have to make a run for it, if he can.

This must be Cheney’s fault, uh, I mean Rumsfeld…no, no, wait, it is Tony Snow, or was it Sean Hannity..? Oh heck, it is clearly just a vast right wing conspiracy that is causing all this trouble with the Bush Twins. Come to think of it, it’s the same vast rigth wing conspiracy that made up the whole Monica Lewinsky thing….

Posted by: JOe | November 27, 2006, 3:49 pm 3:49 pm

Call me old-fashioned, but on this side of the pond, family members of a senior state personage have a built-in, cast-iron duty to both country and family to act responsibly and sensibly. Tough if you’re young and just want to have fun, unfortunately power brings responsibility. The preference for ‘me’ over family and state eroded public support here for Princess Di and the Duchess of York, as it has for Cherie Blair. Poor twins, but that’s life.

Posted by: roy Comfort | November 27, 2006, 3:49 pm 3:49 pm

Why would anyone WANT to go to Argentina anyway? A very arrogant nation.

Posted by: Mike | November 27, 2006, 3:49 pm 3:49 pm

I think I have this figured out. Many have mentioned that if a President’s kid is kidnapped then the U.S. can be held hostage. Not so, as an episode of The West Wing portrayed. If that was to happen, the President would be asked/pressured to step aside and transfer power to either the VP or then the Speaker of the House. A compromised President is essentially incapacitated, just as if he was undergoing surgery and was under anesthetic. So if one of the twins is kidnapped, then the messes Bush created is not Bush’s problem anymore and he can drop it in someone elses lap even earlier that he said he would. Remember when he said that finishing the Iraq war would be the next President’s problem, not his? I can hear him on the phone to the twins now, “Darlin’ you just stay down there as long as you want, and if any of the Secret Service guys give you a hard time about having fun, just sneak out the bathroom window”.

Posted by: Jon | November 27, 2006, 3:50 pm 3:50 pm

I can understand the position taken by the US Embassy. Politically motivated abductions are fairly common in South America. And now virtually everyone on the continent knows not only that the twins are in Buenos Aires but probably also where they are staying.
I imagine there are more than a few drug cartel overlords who would like to exact revenge on Bush for actions taken by our governmentin its war on drugs. And I doubt a few secret service agents operating under the current conditions could be counted on to keep the young ladies safe.
The opportunities for danger brought on by the publicity is what bothers me the most. Btw, I would trust their local friends to keep them safe from random at a soccer match.

How many more days do they have on their tour? Not many.
However, they are doing what all 25 year olds do if they are single, have a good time.
I am taking a WAG that those who have posted who have 25 year olds or older have NEVER had their child do anything that would embarass them.

Posted by: Dan | November 27, 2006, 3:52 pm 3:52 pm

The “twins”, as they are referred to, are two 25 year old adults. There are no stories of any problems with them and they are acting quite normal for two 25 year olds visiting a foreign country. What’s wrong is the incessant, brainless, need by some to disparage anything that has to do with President Bush. By the way, I did my time in the military and was turned down to go to Iraq as I’m now to old. I see cowards suggesting the twins need to enlist to legitimize their anti Bush views. Yes, there might be a concern for their safety with terrorists afoot, but so far so good.

Posted by: John Campbell | November 27, 2006, 3:52 pm 3:52 pm

What a bizarre story. Nothing that was written indicated any reasoning for a security risk. Tabloids are always going to be published with nonsense. That is why they are called “tabloids”. I realize some people hate Bush but what does this story have to do with the war in iraq? Some of you fools really need to get a hobby of some kind. This is one of the most pointless articles I’ve ever read. the majority of the posts are even more pointless. Wait a minute! What I am writing is also pointless. Posted by: Amazed | November 27, 2006, 3:55 pm 3:55 pm

It’s nice to see any story about the Bush family invokes the standard left-wing hate rhetoric.
I seriously doubt this reporter who claims he walked up to the Bush’s was “unnoticed” at all. But it fit their story.
It’s amazing that the left who admit these girls are targets for al qaeda the rest of their lives, are so hateful toward them and don’t see how much President Bush has in fact sacrificed.
To you hateful left wing parents (kind of an oxymoron), what have you put you and your family’s life on the line for lately?
You’re pathetic.

Chelsea Clinton wasn’t a lush who staggered around drunk in public as the twins are reported to have done dozens of times. You Clinton haters who don’t see by now the difference between the most successful President in our lifetime, and a miserable failure who wrecked the country’s reputation and squandered the baby boom’s retirement on a quagmire war, are willful ignoramuses.

The Bush twins are beautiful young women. The vicious posts on this site are sickening and just another example of the total meltdown of liberals and their sickness. No matter what the twins do, they will be ridiculed by libs. Jenna taught last year at a school in D.C. and Barbara did volunteer work at a children’s AIDS clinic.

Posted by: Sandr | November 27, 2006, 3:58 pm 3:58 pm

I am amazed at the lack of reading comprehension (and intelligence) that our public exhibits.
1. They’re not in Iraq because they did not volunteer. It is a VOLUNTEER army (today, anyway).
2. Chill out. They’re sisters having a great time abroad and probably better goodwill ambassadors than you are in your armchair on your high horse.

The Bush twins are really on a mission working for the CIA. They’re really like superheroes. Together with the band of former living Presidents they fight crime and terror around the world. I will tell you though that somehow even Reagan is able to use his powers from the grave.

You guys sure are strange.
Every article on the twins becomes a condemnation of their father. You know what? They are there own people, not their father. Save the attacks on him to articles about him.
Why aren’t the Bush girls in iraq? Because it is a volunteer military, that’s why. They can choose or not choose, the same as your own children. Your children are not clones of you, and neither are they clones of President Bush.
Seems to me the Secret Service that isn’t around for whatever reason and the press which is reporting on their every move and location despite no news value to it, is doing far more to put them at risk, then the girls going to a soccer game.
I can’t believe the jealousy some of you have. Sorry you guys don’t have enough money to travel. That’s a shame. They do, and should continue to do so. That’s one the of the nice things about life, travelling and experiencing other cultures.

Why would ABC print that the Bush twins can be approached with no security check? This is a perfect example of ABC ‘creating’ news, and helping potential bad actors who would do the twins harm. If ABC really wanted to help, they would have simply alerted the Secret Service, but there are no headlines in that.

What in the world have these young women done to warrant such hate and venom from the majority of people on this forum (besides being born to a Republican?). Nothing in the article suggests that they are taking any serious risks. They are 25 years old and enjoying a vacation in Buenos Aires. They are attending socar games and eating out at restaurants. They are hanging out in the hotel lobby with friends. Most young “Backpackers” do more to embarrass this country just walking through the airport.
It sounds to me like this is more about an upstaged Ambassador than a concern for the girls’ security.

No values, no morals, no respect for what their father represents (even thought I don’t like him or his politics) I understand everything else, going to games having a drink, not getting drunk!, but even if their purse was stolen, hey it happens to everyone. How can we demand respect for our president from other countries (example: Venezuela) When his own daughters have no respect for him, Come on, they are turning 25 not 15 don’t they have an education? What kind of values did they get from their family, Bush, what you do in your youth expect it 10 times worse with your kids!

1 – Who cares, indeed.
2 – The girls seem to need a little more structure in their life, I might imagine a stint in the Army or USMC, stationed somewhere near, but not in, the Green Zone would help them set some better priorities.
But then again, maybe they are being set up as cultural sacrifices for daddy’s War on Terra’.
One might imagine, if ‘like father like son’ holds true for spoiled girls as well, they will get into even more trouble and then be bailed out by daddy…. let’s hope, for their sake, and ours, that they still have their heads when daddy gets them out of their upcoming jam.

I’m an American who lives overseas and I can say that if the embassy asks you to leave, it’s for a damn good reason. There’s a reason for that: they are in close contact with the state department and are effectively responsible for any citizen in the country in question at any given time. Oh, and I agree that they aren’t girls, they’re women and as such, should get off their butts and get a life. 25 isn’t a kid, it’s an adult and they should behave as such.

Barbara graduated from Yale University in 2004 and has worked with AIDS patients in Africa through a Baylor Hospital based pediatric AIDS initiative.

GEE SUE Chelsea Clinton wasn’t even 18 when her Daddy was in he whitehouse. so your comparison is LAME! As for those servicemen getting killed and maimed… I spent 15 years in the Marines (77-94)we knew that we could go to war at ANY time and get killed I lost 243 of my BROTHERS in Beruit in 1983. did it stop me from reinlisting? NO I went to Beruit..I went to Gulf I… I went to Somalia.. and you know what I loved being in the Corps! so Semper Fi to all my Brothers and sisters in Iraq and Afganistan Hooah to my Army friends and to the Navy and Air Force… GREAT JOB…

Gee! Iraq is Bush’s war!! Rember the twin towers in N.Y. Remember the Cole. There are more under 25′s killed in N.Y. state in a year (auto accident, shootings) than have been killed in Iraq.
Would you rather fight Terrorist in Iraq or N.Y., I prefer Iraq. Car bombs are just as deadly in N.Y. as Iraq. WAKE UP AMERICA, we are next.

It’s been awhile since I’ve seen such a strong reflection of the poor reading skills and comprehension present in this country now.
First off, it was the U.S. embassy, not the government of Argentina that asked the girls to leave. The government isn’t even mentioned in the article.
Second, leave it to you Bush haters out there to make this about the president instead of what it’s really about, the hate-America crowd, which includes you people using this to bash the Bushes once again over nothing.
Third, they have a bunch of nasty tabloids making up stories and spreading gossip to sell papers and trash Americans. What else is new? The article even tries to put a bad spin on the girls going to a soccer game, as though that was scandalous.
Too bad if the stupid diplomats don’t like it. With the possible exception of Chile, such negative reportage would abound in just about any South American country.
Maybe the U.S. diplomats need to be better diplomats. Who cares if they get shook up? Frankly, I think the entire episode just shows what a lousy job they’re doing. Maybe they should be the ones to leave town by being canned instead of requesting that the daughters of the president leave town. How arrogant!

I love the comments about the Bush twins serving in Iraq.
Are all the people asking that question serving in Iraq?

Posted by: Chuck | November 27, 2006, 4:16 pm 4:16 pm

The twin have jobs…they are on VACATION/HOLIDAY.
As far as the secret service protecting them…they ALWAYS protect them, everywhere….not just while they are on VACATION.
I am glad they aren’t the type of kids who have to watch every step they make because it might affect their parents in some way. They have great parents that are letting them live a REAL life instead of MAKING them “behave” in a manner that would pass this type of scrutiny. Good for the girls and good for their parents!
Now you people get a life and stop worrying about two 25 year olds you expect to pay up for the “sins” of their father. I hope you don’t hold your own children up to these standards. Children of public servants deserve to live their own life in the most normal way possible.
Kudos again to Laura for letting her daughers grow up having fun instead of being pawns for the family’s political success.

It is the job of the U.S. Embassy to keep ANY citizen safe, however it is not their job to babysit. They can only make the suggestion. The thing that strikes me most doesn’t come from the contents of the article but from all of the mindless postings the readers have put up. Will the hatred for the Bush family ever stop. Most people that didn’t agree with or respect our previous President at least respected his position enough that he was never called stupid or inane. It is unbelievable how you can take an article about the Bush twins 25th birthday and turn it into yet another “Bush bashing bonanza.”

They were not elected to anything. They are free citizens. They have the right to go and do whatever they wish. This s utter nonsense. It is just too bad that the ambassador got his panties in a bunch. At least the young women in question don’t seem to be seeking the attention of the press. It seems the same can’t be said for the hapless ambassador. Poor fellow, he missed his 15 minutes and banner headlines.

What in the world does any of this have to do with our sons and daughters fighting in the Middle East? By the way, a majority of these sons and daughters are doing in the Middle East because they believe in the cause! Get over your Bush hatred, it’s sickening. Fine, you don’t agree with Bush’s policies, what does that have to do with ripping on his daughters? I didn’t agree with Clinton’s politics, but I never hated the man!

There is nothing in the article about what the Bush girls have done except eat dinner out, check their e-mail, and go to a soccer match. The local press has been speculating about them without any proof of anything. And many of you have used this to transfer your hatred of the father to the daughters. It is nauseating to read your comments. What does Iraq have to do with the Bush girls going on a trip to Argentina? Nothing except in a very twisted mind.

The reactions to the Budweiser…I mean Bush twins hits home when one thinks of the menatry value it costs us taxpayers to fly them around to live the Paris Hilton lifestyle. A 10 weeks vacation is really nice for two 25 yr old collge grads. When you calculate the costs of the secret service, lodging, food/beverage, spending monies, air travel costs flying on government planes…well it really must be nice not to work or contribute to the nation as a represenatation of the President himself.
Wouldn;t it be nice if these two slobs could help the peoples of this country…lets say…N.O.L.A. and the Katrina relief that still has not shown up for the countless Americans still suffering w/o homes, family, schools, medicine….why should the Bush girls care when they can run a bar tab at the taxpayers of this countries expense. Let them eat cake rings in my ears.
At least Chelsea and Amy Carter did not run amok with a beer bottle in there hands for almost every publicity shot.

Since Hillary and John Kerry voted for the war, where are all the calls for their spoiled over indulged children to join the military.
Where are the calls for Chelsea to quit her high paying job at a hedge fund to go fight.
When the Democrat President commits US troops to a conflict I can guarantee that non of the hypocritical left on this forum will be calling for their children to sign up for war.
Not only are the people calling for the Bush girls to go to war hypocrits, they have no common sense either. Do you honestly think the military would allow the children of a sitting President to actually go and fight in an active warzone?

Barbara’s got a degree in humanities, Jenna in English. What would they do in Iraq? And where’s the logic that says they should go? I don’t think anybody’s demanded that heads of state sacrifice their young to the war gods since Agamemnon. As it is, Barbara’s doing AIDS work in Africa, and Jenna’s going to teach in a Washington DC public school — which is as close to combat as a lot of soldiers ever get.

Posted by: Jay | November 27, 2006, 4:38 pm 4:38 pm

Where is the news? The Central and South Americans have never liked anything US and have done nothing whatever to ever hide it.
The young ladies are 25. Let them decide what is best for them. They are private citizens after all…not employees of the US government.
Besides what, oh what could Barbara and Jenna do to the supposed American image that “Daddy Dearest” has not already done it spades? Let them play…The US has other bigger, more pressing worries than the twins.

Read the article Douglas Lang. It was the U.S. Embassy that asked the trip to be cut short, not the Argentinian government.
The Embassy staff there know the country well, better than we could. If they say it is not safe, then trust their advice.
Could we trust Bush to recuse himself from the Presidency if one or both of the girls was kidnapped? Maybe he could watch reruns of The West Wing to see how real, ableit make-believe, leaders lead.

Posted by: Marc | November 27, 2006, 4:40 pm 4:40 pm

What’s incredible is all of these comments bashing them for being in Argentina where they might get kidnapped or otherwise harmed because of who their father is – and suggesting they go to Iraq.
Of course, if they joined the military and went to Iraq, their very presence would disrupt the mission of whatever unit they were assigned to (one of Princess Diana’s boys loves the British army and wants to serve, but of course they can’t let him because just by being there he’d endanger the very comrades he wants to help). Amazing that so many shoot-from-the-hip Bush bashers here don’t bother to think about that aspect. Using one’s brain would detract from the knee-jerk reaction of the smear.

The Bush twins should be doing something usefull with their lives instead of spending it partying in Argentina. Didn’t one of them get a teaching job? How many teachers to you know that can take off on vacation in the middle of the school year? They need to grow up, and a year in Iraq would be just the thing to do it. My son is currently deployed to Ramadi and home for a two week leave. He’s 21 and he and his 22 year old wife spent the morning at a sperm bank, having his sperm frozen so she can still have his baby if he doesn’t come back. How many young people have to make that kind of decision? Yes, he volunteered, but that does not mean his life is disposible, to be played with by a man who chicken out of Viet Nam. If this is truly the defining struggle of the 21th centurey like Bush says it is, his children would follow the example of FDR’s kids and SIGN UP.

Our ambassadors everywhere, and their flunky fingernail biting State Department pukes are too territorial – having it their way, NO Americans would be tolerated in their fiefdoms. The Bush babes have as much right in Argentina as all of those Nazi murderers who fled there to live out their lives under Juan Peron’s protection. Poor ambassador’s feelings were hurt when the girls, preferring to get stiffed, stiffed him of his opportunity to suck up to the prez. Everyon just yawn, take a nap.

Do any of you have any idea how much money is being spent on the Barbie twins?….Lets see, Secret Service protection in Argentina, my guess,, conservatively, $200,000.00 a day.( out of line?) Oh, and lets not forget how these poster-children for conservative values travel. Do any of you think they flew to Argentina on their frequent fly-er miles? Air force One? That’s got to cost a pretty dime, don’t you think? Oh, and lets not forget Lodging and Dinning, well my little sweeties they aren’t eating at Mac Dee’s. And the best part for the twin runnamucks is that the tab is being paid by the Tax payers.

Pop-quiz. Which is worse, the children of an American president providing potentially embarassing press for their father while attempting to enjoy a trip to a foreign country, or a major American press outlet providing advance details of their itinerary, potentially putting them at risk?

The Bush twins are a threat to Argentine, US and world security? Right. Sitting in a hotel lobby checking email is certainly an issue the UN should be involved in. I mean, my goodness!!! What was Barbara Bush thinking? Who was she emailing? What did she say? Inquiring minds want to know.

How can some of you people have the audacity to defend them? And comparing them to Chelsea Clinton is ludicrous. Chelsea was way beyond her years in maturity, these girls are just party girls who are always in the media for their crazy lifestyle.
25 is way to old to be acting the way these girls act. At 25 most priveledged kids even are finishing up there graduates degrees and getting ready for a career. To say “oh, remember what it was like to be young” is stupid. They’re not 21 year old kids anymore. They should be old enough to know that when the Federal Gov’t. of the USA tells them something isn’t safe, the warning may be wise to heed. I’m 23 and I know that (I would have known it at 18). But I guess not being born with a silverspoon in my mouth affected me in that way…I’m adult enough to take serious matters seriously.
The NUT doesn’t fall far from the tree.

I’ve read all your comments, and the truth is most of you don’t really give a rats rear end about the President’s daughters. Objectivity is sadly missing. Your Bush hatred is showing all over the place — BIG TIME!!! Some of you should do some honest soul searching — hatred is all consuming and very destructive to the hater. Think about it.

They are accused of eating lunch in a restaurant, meeting with friends in their hotel lobby and surfing the web, big deal! They sound completely normal.

Maybe it is about time that you guys started supporting the president that YOU ELECTED! Even if you did not vote for him, you elected him, seeing as this country is a democracy. As for his daughters, any of you with 25 year old children should be looking at their own behavior. They aren’t doing anything wrong. They are acting their age. The thing is, when your children act their age, NO ONE IS WATCHING! Can’t we just have the same standards for our leaders children as our own children?

What is wrong with a society whose citizens resort to name-calling and nit-picking to make a point? There have been references to the Bush sisters as “pea brains” and to one responder as “intellectually lazy.” Is “Molly” the only person who has ever made an error? Take a look at yourselves, you should be ashamed of your angry, aggressive tone. Many of the remarks posted above are beyond uncivil, they are purposefully hurtful. Get control of yourselves and discuss this relatively unimportant matter in a civil manner.

While I don’t think calling ANYONE ugly names is a good idea, what happened to the rightwingers who hate these comments when all the talk about “ugly” Chelsea was going on? Made me sick. As for the twins, they don’t deserve to be called names or be lied about either.

Yes, as everyone has pointed out to poor ol’ Molly, the message came from the Embassy. BUT isn’t it possible that the Argentine government went to the Ambassador and requested this? It does sound better coming from the US Embassy, rather than for the Argentine government to appear to be throwing them out.

Wow, I guess 25 year old single girls should’nt be going out and having fun. Sheesh. As for those here saying they should be in Iraq, our military is VOLUNTARY!!! If your son or daughter is in the military, they did it voluntarily. If you think they should be in Iraq, then that means there should be a draft. I could care less what they do with their money. Some people are born rich, others aren’t. I’m far from rich, but I don’t get jealous or hate them because they have family money. People here that are bitching and whining about them being spoiled rich girls are just jealous.

The Bush twins should be commended for knowing that Buenos Aires is one of the hottest tourist destinations going currently and that Boca Juniors are fun to watch.
The twin’s crimes seem to be having fun in a cool town and one of them having their purse stolen in an upscale trendy part of town. The very same thing could have happened in New York or LA any day of the week.
Party on! Girls.

IT GOES TO SHOW YOU THAT THE BUSH TWINS ARE AS ARROGANT AS THEIR FATHER. THEY SEE HE DOESN’T LISTEN TO MORE INFORMED AND INTELLIGENT INDIVIDUALS TO MAKE INFORMED DESCIONS AND NEITHER DO THEY. THIS IS WHY WE ALWAYS FIND OURSELVES ALONE IN THIS WORLD. ASK YOURSELF A QUESTION, DO YOU LIKE AND ADMIRE A HUMBLE PERSON OR DO YOU LIKE AN ARROGANT ONE BETTER.

The article did not say the Bush twins did anything to make the security harder. According to it they were (oh the horor) talking to their friend, checking e-mails and going to football games. Looks to me that they are trying to live a normal life. Good for them. And all the left whiners need to stop worry: they will follow left’s idol and not inhale…

Let’s see if I get this right….the Bush twins should be serving in Iraq instead of going on vacation. Last I remember we had an all volunteer service…so they chose not to volunteer, so what. Chelsea seemed to take a pass on that one also. I hope all you folks that share this sentiment remember your statements when it’s time for your vacation…..there is a recruiting office in almost every town. Go there instead of vacation.

This is not even a story worth printing. Are all young people remiss when traveling instead of joining the armed forces? What does their father’s policies, love them or not, have to do with the travel plans of two young adults?
My father supports the war in Iraq, yet I am travelling this year as well. Does his support obligate me to go fight in Iraq.
Most of you people are just taking out your hatred of the President on his daughters.
Reminds me of when losers would attack poor Chelsea, just because her father was a lying, letcherous coward.
Bad form!

It is nice to see the Bush twins
enjoy themselves. I know of a lot
of folks in their early and mid
twenties who are enjoying the hell
out of life in Iraq and the sacrifices they are making might
seem more reasonable to them if
shared by the Bush twins. Perhaps
the twenty year olds in the Service
and VA hospitals might get a kick
out of a visit, a smile, a kind
word from the Bush twins. But no,
let the sweet young things contribute nothing, and enjoy it all. Hell I’ll bet they could join the texas National Gaurd, never go to a meeting and get an early out discharge.JUST LIKE DAD!!!!!!!!!!!!

It is not easy to keep the Bush twins safe if they themselves order their own security detail to stay away from them. The twins are known for getting rid of their security detail because they wanted to have fun. If they’re kidnap by terrorists, I hope this country will not send an army to rescue them. The US embassy and security staff suggested to them to shorten their visit, but they refuse. US taxpayers are paying for the salary of the secret service watching, if they don’t want the secret service to keep them safe, its their right to do so. But if some harm come to them their father and mother have no one to blame but his own uncontrollable daughters.

Posted by: Les | November 27, 2006, 5:27 pm 5:27 pm

Okay, the twins are young & rich and want to have a good time. That’s totally understandable. Quit attacking them and just let them be. Also, just b/c their father is the President of the U.S. and started this whole war doesn’t mean that they have to enlist in the military. That’s just ignorant. Serving our country is an honored priviledge. I’m an army brat, my father was in Iraq 2003. It’s a huge strain on one’s family. You can’t just expect someone that doesn’t want to fight for our country to do it, simply b/c their father is the President. Hello?!?! WAKE UP PEOPLE!

Posted by: Whitney | November 27, 2006, 5:29 pm 5:29 pm

This is a prime example of the ignorance in the US. No wondeer the rest of the world laughs at us. Argentina is not Venezuela, Chavez is presidet of Venezuela. I guess Argentina is close enough. And yes, the US Embassy asked them to leave not the government but now people will be saying the Argentinians don’t want them there. And these same people vote – that is what is really scary.

The children of America go to Iraq and Afghanistan to die while the Bush children go on vacation. Must be a family tradition of arrogance. Their father has an estimated IQ of 92 so I would not expect much common sense from the daughters. The Bush family just bought up a huge amount of land in South America so perhaps they feel they are natives.

And if they get kidnapped…Well…we don’t negotiate with kidnappers, right?

Once again ABC News stands for All ‘Bout Clinton. ABC just can’t find enough ways to work against this president and this country. It’s a shame it is named “the American Broadcasting Company”.
The 2 young ladies are representing America, just as the 1 new ambassador is doing. Can Argentina not protect three Americans at once?

No wonder the American image abroad is so bad. They probably think all American women are just as empty-headed as the Bush twins.

Dean our armed services may be voluntary but my son, who is a Marine, volunteered to defend American. America is not in danger. Instead, our soldiers are illegally occupying a country that had no WMD’S and had nothing to do with a terrorist attack.
War is NOT a “hazard of their job”. War should be the last resort of a nation under attack. Many countries are hit by terrorists but America is one of the few that is now run by a terrorist.

Note: how many did not even bother to accurately read the story.
I don’t have enough time to walk around and slap every one of them. Beside’s it’s funny to watch them.
Also, If anyone is familiar with the ego of most ambassadors and other State Department staff, they would know that this whole incident is most likely a result of a huge, fragile, bruised state department ego.

Why are the Bush parents letting these immature girls be the laughing stock of the Latin American continent? They do as they please, countermanding any advice for their security like a couple of brats. I have no idea why I feel the need to read what you people post with regard to most “news” articles lately. But, like always, you all never let me down in your ever vigilant rage and bile towards President Bush and the US. Even something so trival as this has people posting about “the horrible problems in the middle east”, as if it has anything to do with the Bush twins vacations.
Yep, no problems in the middle east before that evil Bush came along. None what so ever. I remember back in the 90′s when my family used to vacation in the middle east and everyone loved each other and millions didn’t die. And now the evil Bush twins are making it worse?????
By the way, if you can’t see the secret service, then they are doing their job.

Posted by: Scott | November 27, 2006, 5:43 pm 5:43 pm

They’re 25 years old, why does ABC “news” call them “girls” and try to suggest that they can be TOLD what to do. And why does ABC “news” think it’s the Twins’ nanny. Go to hell ABC “news”, find something IMPORTANT to tell us about, and get the next one right without all the opinion.

Posted by: Joe | November 27, 2006, 5:44 pm 5:44 pm

Any person under Secret Service protection can REFUSE protection at ANY TIME. They can also place ‘limits’ on said protection that they feel interfere with their privacy.
If they wish to have more privacy with less security that is a tradeoff. It is also a testament to the fact that the U.S. values personal freedom concerning such choices.
At the same time I am doubtful that they were ‘without protection’ when the ABC reporter interviewed them. They do have facial recognition software (they would have access to the hotels CCTV feeds) and likely are aware of every accredited journalist.
it could be that the twins asked that their protection detail be more discreet. It could also be that is how the Secret Service operates when protecting such people.
Regardless the twins should have the right (and do) to refuse protection. At the same time there is a real fear (in my mind) that if something were to happen to them because of their personal choices President Bush would make emotional decisions that would be irrational and/or contribute to greater instability.

Posted by: James | November 27, 2006, 5:45 pm 5:45 pm

The real travesty here is that Secret Service personnel risk their lives to protect these arrogant, spoiled brats who are more interested in keeping the fun going than they are in having concern for the health and safety of those sworn to protect them. Shame on them!!! Why aren’t these “girls” out working in a real job somewhere (they’re 25!), and not jet-setting around the world to exotic locations, living a life of luxury off of daddy’s money?

Posted by: Karyn | November 27, 2006, 5:46 pm 5:46 pm

Unless any of you have enlisted in the military or volunteering to help the troops in some other capacity, you really have no right to call out the Bush twins for not being in Iraq or Afghanistan.
As far as their presence in Argentina, I’m also confused as to where the story is. This seems to be much like any story seen in the British press about the antics of either of the princes. In any case, the vacation plans of these two women warrant nothing more than the back page of some gossip magazine and certainly not a respected news source.
Granted, there is an inherent danger in being the daughter of a president. And perhaps Argentina is not the safest of locales, but it is certainly not the most dangerous.
Finally, it seems as if many of you feel that because taxpayers pay for Secret Service, you, or the government, should have the right to dictate where they travel. This is simply not the case, as former Presidents, who still get Secret Service protection, do not get told where they may travel by taxpayers.

Ok, so let me summarize the logical reasoning of all the pro-Bushes in this blog:
The twins are not responsible for any consequences of their actions, but if anything happens it will be the fault of Bill Clinton, Chelsea Clinton, Nanci Pelosi, the Kennedys and the liberals.

The US Embassy provides Diplomatic Security agents to supplement Secret Service details. The US Embassy has a direct responsibility for the security/safety of the twins while in Argentina as a result. This is due to their knowledge of the country they serve in. I would hope people here realize that a Secret Service agent would be unfamiliar with Argentina and it is HIGHLY UNLIKELY that there are enough Spanish speaking agents to provide the necessary security to the twins. Specifically it is important to know what a person is saying in order to ascertain whether or not they are a threat.
Diplomatic security on the other hand are assigned to locations where they have some knowledge about the local culture (and aquire more) and generally have fluency in the local language.

Chelsea Clinton was fiercely protected for eight long years by the media at the request of her loving parents, who wanted her merely as a political prop in a spotlight they would choose. She was completely cocooned.
No such luck for a Republican president’s daughters from the dinosaur media.

People who call them names and make comments about the ” apples dont fall far from the tree” what is up with that do you really know them? Or are you going by what News outlets say? Its a fact Bush has been attacked in the media more they Clinton was plus I recall one Media/ SNL attack on Chelsea Clinton and after that she was off limits so I guess its ok because Bush is a Republican and Clinton’s are Democrat…….I am sure they would be happy if there Dad was not President so they can have a normal life and not have all the jerks slam them on the comment boards…. It is amazing the amount of assumptions being made here today to numerous to count – spoiled – yes – who doesn’t spoil their kids – even when they reach 25 – not willing to serve their country; hardly. you can bet that these young ladies have had their future mapped out for them to a great extent; with minimal choice of their own. This happens in ALL political families. Forced to serve in military – give me a break. As veteran who served during the period when this country last had a draft; there were just as many Democrats as Republicans whose children seemed to become “exempt”, so don’t confuse Mr. Wrangle’s suggestion that a draft would level the field – it never has and never will. You can bet that if a draft were re-instituted the politicians kids would be the first ones off the list; since the local draft boards are generally political appointments. To Barbara & Jenna have a good birhtday; sorry about getting ripped off – have fun

They really need to be careful. Considering that the U.S. Gov’t has not hesitated in kidnapping the families of suspected terrorists with the hopes of bringing their kin to justice, some loony may consider doing the same to the Bush girls. Then, of course, we will ‘play the victim’ and attribute it to terrorists. Republicans love pretending to be victimized.

Why do you consider them spoiled brats? I dont understand that statement. They are typical young adults who dont think anything can happen to them.
My biggest questions is why is this being reported…..who cares!

How…exactly…do you go on “vacation”. . .when you don’t really have any job?

Posted by: Kevin | November 27, 2006, 5:53 pm 5:53 pm

They obviously don’t love their father. If my daddy had started a war, you better believe I’d be on the front line winning it for him instead of partying.

All you people who think this is news worthy. SHUT UP! For those who want to take this opportunity to bash the Bush family, please take breath and move on. Barbara and Jenna, have your fun in the sun, enjoy your birthdays and arrive back to the USA safely. ABC you never cease to amaze me. This is just not something that we should be concerned with. Yes, the world hates America but contrary to what some of you think. It is not because of our foreign affairs, it is because they are envious of the greatest country on God’s green earth. The USA will prevail through all of this petty crap. Unless we are all blown away by Hugo and his gruesome pals in the middle east. All you morons will be eating crow soon enough.

Having recently returned from Buenos Aires, I can certainly understand why the Bush twins would want to visit and wouldn’t want to leave. It’s a fabulous, vibrant city. However Argentines have very negative views of Bush and his presidency. That was made clear last year when he traveled there for a summit and was met with thousands of screaming protestors. Just in my short time there I heard many, many anti-Bush sentiments. So the twins had to know they were in unfriendly territory, and that “outing” them as being in Buenos Aires, which the purse snatching incident certainly did, would make them more vulnerable. I’ll bet they consider themselves private citizens and as such should be able to do what they want: stay. But they really can’t. I hope they realize their ruined vacation is collateral damage of their father’s failed presidency.

Posted by: Evangeline | November 27, 2006, 5:55 pm 5:55 pm

The twins have not been involved in anything scandalous discounting fictional sotries in the tabloids. They have been dining, shopping, and going to sporting events. “Embassy officials” is probably one or two people who went to the press after their view of the security situation was rejected by superiors. Despite the suggestion by one person here that Jenna is “skipping class”, and another that they don’t have jobs she works for UNICEF in Panama, and hasn’t been a teacher in DC for some time now. Barbara works for the Baylor College of Medicine’s AIDS in Africa program.

“No Secret Service agents were anywhere to be seen in the lobby, according to ABC News’ Joe Goldman.”
Someone named “Joe Goldman” knows what the hell a Secret Service agent looks like? Hahahahahahaha. Do the fools at ABC so-called “News” know what evidence is?

They are just like their father. They really don’t care who gets hurt or is put in harm’s way. No doubt about the paternity of these careless party girls!

Why should the Bush daughters have to serve in Iraq? Their dad didn’t do any “hard” service time. At least their grandfather was a serviceman. These kids – one is a teacher – wouldn’t teach my kids.

per comments from Christine | Nov 27, 2006 1:52:08 PM “You really cannot expect these young girls to take their security issues seriously, but their parents, being the President and First Lady, surely ought to be able to order their daughters home.” ORDER THEM HOME !!! they are 25 years old, not 5

Let’s face it. These two “kids” are spoiled brats. Dubya was no better at raising his children than he was at trying to run a country.
If you want to see the character of the parents…just look at their children.

I think its wonderful and entertaining reading all of the Liberal loonies and their ridiculous comments. If Geroge Bush is the dumbest president on the planet, what does that say about the Liberal loonies candidates that he beat, not once, but twice? Hahahaha

Dear Lisa,
Are you kidding me? How selective your memory is. Chelsea Clinton had way more scrutiny than these girls ever will. The difference is, she was a class act.

Why aren’t the twins fighting in Iraq?

Posted by: Frank Z | November 27, 2006, 6:02 pm 6:02 pm

Where is the news in this? It is in the fact that the daughters of the leader of the free world are cavorting around when the United States Embassy in the region has told them they are in danger and should leave. That is news, my friend, democrat or republican.

Posted by: Dave Hale | November 27, 2006, 6:02 pm 6:02 pm

No more Congressman Foley stories to break, so try to make news with the Bush daughters. Leave them alone! I am afraid America is once again a “sleeping giant” and the mainstream media contributes to this condition with what you do NOT report to the public! If the important news were truly reported, this nation would not be so divided. The media is like a meddling relative, trying to break a family (our country) apart for their own power.

Posted by: Maria | November 27, 2006, 6:03 pm 6:03 pm

These are 25 year old private citizens of the US. They should no more be controlled by their Father than Billy Carter was by his brother. Would you liberals really like to make comparisons? WHY IS THIS NEWS?

Posted by: Tom | November 27, 2006, 6:05 pm 6:05 pm

The Bush twins are party girls… If you recall, one of them was busted for under-age drinking. They do not look like the type of girls that sit home on the weekends reading Plato or practicing piano if you get my drift. That was the whole point of the ABC article.

Posted by: Mike | November 27, 2006, 6:10 pm 6:10 pm

Most of you are so judgemental. Do you have any idea how juvenile you sound as you bash a couple of 25 year olds? Sounds like a bunch of bitter dems.

Posted by: Carol | November 27, 2006, 6:10 pm 6:10 pm

Amen John Jouett! The media today is the worst place to come for “news.” They couldn’t report anything of substance or value accurately even if they were reporting about their own mothers.

Posted by: C | November 27, 2006, 6:13 pm 6:13 pm

I commend the Bush girls on their choice of vacation spots! Buenos Aires is a spectacular city. I also admire their choice of hotels…as reported in the local papers they have chosen two small moderately priced boutique hotels–not the U$400 a night lavish palaces that can be found in BA. They have gone to nice but not showy restaurants, etc. I find nothing in the article to suggest they have been partying hard (although it is easy to do in BA). The real story here is, as others have pointed out, the lax security–a common thief snatches a purse while the girls are under the watchful eye of the secret service….a reporter strolls into the hotel and approaches the girls without being stopped…this is cause for some concern….I did not vote for Bush, but it would bother me as an American if his daughters were kidnapped or harmed….I hope someone is tightening security….

Posted by: dr__dawggy | November 27, 2006, 6:14 pm 6:14 pm

Comparing Chelsea to these girls is like comparing a Cadillac to a Yugo. If you want to know the difference between them, one only need to look at the parenting. Say what you will about the Clintons, I would put their child rearing up against anyone in the Bush clans any damn day of the week! The proof is in the pudding.

Posted by: Dave Hale | November 27, 2006, 6:14 pm 6:14 pm

Put those two in combat gear and send them to Iraq. Bush has no problem sending other’s kids into harms way. He should send his own.

Posted by: MarkS. | November 27, 2006, 6:15 pm 6:15 pm

Get the Bush girls out of Argentina immediately and send them where they belong — in Iraq “defending America’s freedom”. That would surely make Daddy proud!

Posted by: Hatchery | November 27, 2006, 6:15 pm 6:15 pm

This is not news…its hate speech aimmed at their father. ABC, NBC, CBS…alphabet soup without any news or substance. I seem to recall that Chelsea Clinton was ruled off limits by her parents…and the media acknowledged and abided with their wishes. Double standard…nah!

“[T]hese girls are running around laughing and having fun while our children die.”
Children? The youngest active duty soldiers are 18 — old enough to vote. The Bush “girls” are 25 — old enough to run for Congress. Between those two ages there are 24.6 million people in America, of whom 165,000 are in Iraq and Afghanistan at a time. This is not even a substantial percentage of “our” children, 99.4 percent of whom are also, presumably, running around laughing and having fun. So could someone please give us a coherent argument as to why the Bush “girls” should be serving in Iraq?

Posted by: Jay | November 27, 2006, 6:17 pm 6:17 pm

What the heck are they doing in Argentina, anyway ? If they are not traveling and staying at US taxpayer expense, their secret service minders certainly are. How much is that costing us ? Why should we be footing the bill for this extravangance ?
It also says something about the attitude of the Bush “girls” regarding the US. We are good enough to have their father as president, but this country isn’t good enough for them to vacation in.
Maybe they have a point about this country, after their father has helped trash this country with 11 million plus illegal immigrants and an unending flow of third-world immigrants to create more urban sprawl, crime, and pollution.

The story, meaningless on its face, has taken a life of its own because, in general, the Bush haters have nothing to do but criticize. When your own embassy tells you it might be best to cut your trip short and go home, that says a lot. Your safety is the number one priority; followed closely by the safety of the American people. The American people do not need to have a president whose decisions could be influenced by a, God for bid, successful kidnapping attempt on members of his family. His daughters should take that into consideration when traveling to countries that are not necessarily US friendly, or located near countries that have incinuated your father is the “devil”.
Like it or not, you represent our country, so act like. You are ambassadors,in a way, of our country. As the president’s children, unfortunately, your childhood goes out the window.
Etiquette dictates how should should act in the public eye. We don’t see this much news on our stationed diplomats. I really don’t want to continue to see news on the president’s daughters.
For a president that preaches about family values, morales, blah, blah, I find it appauling that you didn’t even bother to spend Thanksgiving together as a family. Maybe that’s part of the problem.
Sad sad state of affairs.

i’m so glad that they can have a carefree time in south america while soldiers are dying in iraq. and shame on you abc. this story is about as newsworthy as a daily briefing titled “al queda determined to attack u.s.”. and shame on that embassy for trying to take precautions to protect these young ladies of americas first family. if harm comes to them, it wont be their fault ( what do embassys know?) it will be on abc.

Sounds to me like they were being “Good Will Ambasords”.
What makes anyone assume that the Secret Service was nowhere around? Did it occur to anyone that perhaps they knew the ABC reporter and might have still been at arms length. You all seem to assume that because the reporter wasn’t intersepted that there was no security.

First of all they are not girls. They are 25 year old women. I am sure the other 20 something women reading this agree.
Second, how would like to be surrounded by secret service agents 24/7 as a 25 year old?
I remember what I did for fun at 25 so please get off your self rightous soap boxes. I am sure Chelsea Clinton never had fun either.

Posted by: Hugh | November 27, 2006, 6:38 pm 6:38 pm

I care when my hard-earned tax dollars continue to be spent by two spoiled young women who refuse to go home at the request of their government because they’re not yet finished partying at my expense. They have the same sense of duty to this country as Daddy did when it was his turn to serve — jumping to the head of the waiting list to fly soon-to-be-decommissioned jets that would never see combat, and then going AWOL to Florida to party-hearty after his rich daddy snagged him the playboy pilot gig. I wonder if the twins found some good cocaine to snort like Daddy did in Houston years ago? In a few years they too will exhibit the deer-in-the-headlights dopey gaze of incomprehension sported by their Daddy after years of alcohol and drug abuse. This is how people behave when they have never had a boss, never had to work for a living or hold down a real job, and are totally disconnected from reality. It’s all about them.

Posted by: Bob | November 27, 2006, 6:43 pm 6:43 pm

This article is bogus, the US embassy didn’t ask them to leave. They just came out and said they did not advise them at all about how long to stay. Its just another instance of the press making up stories so they have something to write about.

Posted by: Justin | November 27, 2006, 6:43 pm 6:43 pm

I think a lot of people here miss the point, this is a DANGEROUS TIME. Iraq now is in CIVIL WAR, terrorist groups would find a way to kidnap any of these women to be use as bargaining chips. Their father is the President of USA, the most hated man right now in the world. His daughters are not doing him any favor by flaunting their stupidity to the world. Think how many cameras were focused on them during the soccer game. Think how many terrorists are thinking of kidnapping them. If some harm come to them, do you think Bush will just sit there in the Oval Office? He would send our military into more trouble to rescue his daughter, its an instinct of a father. Would he think of the American people? NO! He’ll be thinking of his own flesh and blood.
None of us can predict what will happen to Iraq, the last thing we need is any of the twins kidnapped by terrorists. Our plate is full, it’s overflowing. Iraqis and soldiers dying, getting maimed in Iraq younger than these two women, and they’re partying and flaunting it?

Posted by: les | November 27, 2006, 6:50 pm 6:50 pm

Mature …and the rest of you folks. Why do you care about how the rest of the world sees us? They could care less how we view them, a lot of them try to tick us off. Why is this the only Country in this world that his this need to be liked by everyone else. I only need one thing…that this country is safe. That is the only issue any of us should be concerned about.

How come some of you people cannot get it through your heads that we have an all “voluntary” military in this great country? Get over your lame argument that the Bush daughters should not be having a good life because they are not in the military! They both work hard and deserve to enjoy themselves! How about channeling all of your negative energy into supporting our soldiers this holiday season? There are many great charities that appreciate donations to help our soldiers know we care about them. Do good for our heroes! Stop complaining!

Posted by: Maria | November 27, 2006, 6:57 pm 6:57 pm

From a former Whitehouse Marine, there could have been 5 agents in that hotel room with sub machine guns and the only people who would have known it would be the agents themselves. Real life security for people like this is not like you see on TV with sharp dressed guys standing around in sun glasses and a wire going into their ear as they talk into their wristwatch. The reporters did not see them for a reason, but you can relax because they are there. If you ever want to see something that will amaze you, play the Reagan assassination in slow motion repeatedly. Count how many agents you see before the shots are fired. Play it over again a few more times and then count how many agents you see after the shots are fired.

Wow, things have changed. Not too long ago President Menem cancelled two or three days of his official calendar in order to escort Claudia Schiffer (back when she was a super model)throughout Buenos Aires and the rest of Argentina. I guess that was back in the good old days when the first thing Americans thought about when hearing “Argentina” was hyper inflation – not travel, history, art and commerce.

Posted by: george | November 27, 2006, 7:24 pm 7:24 pm

What a bunch of baloney. I used to live in Buenos Aires. I just returned from a month in Argentina. The Bush young women (At 25 they are young women not girls) are safer in BA then Georgetown or anywhere else in Washington DC. They are doing nothing more than virtually everyone does when in BA. Two young women in our traveling party had a wonderful time at a Boca game as have I. This is a non story and just some folks trying to make a mountain out of a mole hill. The embassy in BA is a mess. It has little or no real contact, other than the visa line, with average Argentines. It doesn’t have the range of contacts with key Argentines that the Embassy used to have. In short this story if true is about an embassy unable or unwilling to do its job like embassy’s used to do. Believe me when I was last in BA I was appalled at the way that embassy treated Argentines and AMCITS alike.

Leave these two alone – if you have a problem with their father, then so be it, but you should focus your rage and ignorance at him. Ridiculous.

Why are these two out partying instead of serving in Iraq?
If Bush thinks it’s OK to send other people’s children to kill and die in Iraq, he should be willing to send his own daughters. They are the perfect age to serve.
Oh, I forgot. Military service is reserved for the little people. Not the elite.

Ok, so the embassy staff (state dept) tells the bush twins they can’t guarantee their safety – in a developing crime ridden country where nobody is really safe – with or without bodyguards.
What do twinsies do? They tell the embassy to go to hell.
Like it or not, they are being protected by a great deal of us assetts. Like it or not, they are consuming a large portion of the embassies staff. Like it or not, they are sitting ducks.
This is neither mature nor responsible. This wouldn’t be tolerated if any other political family were down there. Why doesn’t the president care? He’s an idiot.
So are the daughters.

The double standard remains in play. Children of Democratic Presidents don’t get bad press, but Children of Republican Presidents do, even if the story has to be contrived from dubious sources.
If Clinton were still in the White House, would ABC News tell us that a “tabloid headline had the young women running nude in the hallway of their hotel.” Not likely.
And if Clinton were still President, we wouldn’t be hearing all-too-obvious hints that the daughters’ security wasn’t up to par. It’s easy to suspect that ABC News hates Bush so much they want these two girls kidnapped by terrorists.

Why are they in Buenos Aires?Because it’s one of the hottest place to travel, and for a cheap price, according to Travel&Leisure, Conde Nast Travel, Salon, Slate, Nytimes, etc.
Are they in danger in Argentina? Not more than in a average american city, with a comparable crime rate, just being a tourist you are a magnet for pickpocket or pursesnatcher(I got rob in NY)
Does Argentina hate the USA? They can dislike some of the US foreign policy(like almost the entire world). But for most argentines the twins are just young girls having fun and nobody is doing a big fuss out of it.
Would they party in Argentina. Hell yeah, but nothing armfull, just clean old fun for young adults.
Maybe they will meet a good looking argentine men, and open up to other cultures.
People souldn’t mixed their father’s politics with their personal life.

I’d like all the Bush-bashers to take a moment to think about this: if you lived in the Middle East, Venezuela, or Cuba, and had written critically of the government, you would either spend the rest of your days being tortured (I mean REALLY tortured, not panties on the head), or executed as an enemy of the state. You can dislike the Republicans all you wish, but be thankful you live in a country that allows dissent and free speech.
Joseph Stalin said: “Ideas are more powerful than guns. We would not let our enemy have guns, why should we let them have ideas.”
Stalin was another despot who killed everyone who opposed him or spoke out against him. Be thankful our country embraces the concept of free expression of ideas.

It’s staggering how the detractors of the entire Bush family take from the article what they need to fuel their hatred. If one reads the FULL article, it clearly states that neither the Argentinians NOR the Embassy officials asked them to leave. The Embassy denied having made such a request or expressing any concern for the safety of these young ladies. And is it possible that the covert SECRET service were well aquainted with the “ABC Reporter” and didn’t feel the need to over react? Perhaps the animous for the Bush family has reached critical mass and they can do NOTHING without garnering unwarranted criticism?

I wonder what everyone would say if we were forced to fight the war on terror in our own backyard, because no one was brave enough to take the fight to them. “A smart general chooses his battlefields.”, and our President chose to do his best to protect America from anymore bloodshed on our soil.
And as for the Bush girls: I wish them well, and a wonderful vacation.

When my family was stationed overseas my father always instilled in my brothers and sisters that we represented the american people while we were in that country. We kids always had to be on our best behavior. If we weren’t boy did we hear about it from our dad. We should ask the same from the presidents daughters. After all their are women and not girls. It is to bad that they take after their father and not their mother.

Posted by: anna | November 27, 2006, 9:27 pm 9:27 pm

For goodness’ sake! They’re 25! They are not girls. They are women! If Fox called them “girls” I wouldn’t be that surprised. But, I expected a lot more from ABC news. What a disappointment!

Posted by: Ann | November 27, 2006, 9:43 pm 9:43 pm

I agree it’s about as irresponsible for ABC to report on the apparent vulnerability of these “first daughters” as it is to report on, say, how unprotected our nuclear power plants are. But the jet setting lifestyle of these women, in what their dad might say is a “grave war for our civilization” sadly does not elevate the leadership or gravitas of the Presidency. Perhaps they are not required to do so, anymore than are Prince Harry and Prince William required to elevate the British royalty. It wouldn’t hurt if Jenna and not-Jenna followed in the footsteps of Alice Roosevelt, Caroline Kennedy, Amy Carter or Chelsea Clinton… but as they might say “WHATEVER!”

Argentina has had its share of crime, it has also been next door to Islamic terrorism, the bombing of a Jewish School. It isn’t out of the question that given lax security and high publicity of their location and/or itinerary, they could be kidnapped or face an attack. This President has a lot of enemies, anyone from drug barons to leftists could think about attacking them. The embassy needs to provide more security, maybe hire extra body guards.
On the other side, I would hate to guard these kids. They are clearly spoiled rotten and devoid of common sense. They are free to do what they want, but they ought to be more dignified. They are not representing the US that well.
Maybe this is too “liberal” for some people, but it seems like common sense to me. This is why the right lost the last election, they have no common sense any more, everything is a knee jerk reaction.

One thing I find interesting in these tales of “Gin & Tonic”, is that last week when the ‘purse snatching’ ocurred, there was a reference in the BBC to the ‘Twins’ being in Paraguay for work with UNICEF & this week the media says it’s a tale of a 25th birthday celebration, so why were they passing through Paraguay? Being ‘party girls’ it’s easy to understand why they would head to Buenos Aires for some ‘get down time’.
Anyone else hear about the 100,000+ acres the Bush Clan purchased in ‘alto Paraguay’ which is adjacent to the 1,000,000 acres bought by Rev. Moon????

These are 25-year-old women and they are still living the party life? Most people that age that I know are have responsibilities. They have families, jobs, in short, a life. Everybody likes to cut loose now and then, but I hear little about these two except frolicking. Two little Paris Hilton juniors. This is the attitude that makes me so angry. People in the U.S., friends I know, are working their butts off for less money than it takes to pay their modest living expenses, while the “royalty” class in this country party their lives and our tax money away. And yes, it’s my tax money that Mr. Bush gave away in his massive tax cuts for the wealthy. Not to mention the security I’m paying for. Stay the hell home and do something useful in the world, girls. In short, grow up.

First off, if you don’t have children you’re idiots! If you do have children especially little girls then you know if you had the power of the president of the United States of America that you are no fool to leave your daughters unwatched. Come on America use some common sense here, whether you’re republican or democrat if you’re a father you care about your children or so you should and I have no doubt that President Bush is doing just that. Okay we have a President that stands up to the world and yes it does cost lives but this is not the first war out country has seen and certainly won’t be the last. Keep that in mind. No matter how much you hate Bush the world hates America more and that happened way before he took office. September 11th wasn’t planned overnight, don’t be fools!

Sheesh. Didn’t the West Wing show once devote an entire month on this very thing: the activities of a president’s daughter and her subsequent security risk? Maybe if one of the twins is kidnapped, Bush would have to step down, like the West Wing president did, oh no that would mean Cheney (aka Dick Halliburton) would take over. That could be a LOT worse. Then the Iraq war might never end, and Halliburton stock would soar. On second thought, get those kids home, and YES, folks, they ARE still kids at 25.

I am surprised at the amount of people that defend the Bush twins and make so little of the fact that our own counrty is concerned for thier safty and they are ignoring the concerns. if they are attacked, killed, kidnapped, it could have serious implications for all all Americans. I am not against them traveling or going on vaction but the fact that they ignore thier safty and our national security is an example of why i as a registered rep. voted almost all dem this election and am on the fence about the presidentail election. Stop hating on the children of our Presidents. At least with the Bush’s you get loyalty and love of wife and children. Clinton was a disgrace, but it wasn’t Chelsea’s fault. Official response from the US Embassy in Argentina:
We have seen a report from news sources stating that Embassy officials strongly suggested that President Bush’s daughters curtail their visit in Argentina.
This is false, as are other aspects of the report referring to the Embassy’s position on the visit.
The Embassy welcomes the visit and has provided close support and cooperation.
NOTED ABOVE IS THE QUOTE FROM THE EMBASSY IN ARGENTINA DENYING THEY ASK THE BUSH TWIN’S TO LEAVE. SO WHY CAN’T YOU PEOPLE GIVE IT A REST,THEY WILL COME HOME WHEN THEY ARE READY.THEY ARE GROWN WOMEN AND DON’T NEED MOMMY N DADDY TO STAND OVER THEM. IT IS TIME TO LET THEM BE YOUNG LADIES N ENJOY LIFE. NOW THAT SAID LET’S TALK ABOUT THE PRESIDENT. HE IS NO BETTER N CERTAINLY NO WORSE THAN ANY OF THE PRESIDENT’S BEFORE HIM. CLINTON, CARTER WERE IN MY OPINION THE TWO WORST.AND HAVE A HARD TIME THINKING OF THE BEST,IT SURE WASN’T NIXON OR FORD. BUT I WOULD RATHER SEE A REPUBLICAN IN THE WHITE HOUSE N I PROCLAIM TO BE NEITHER A DEMOCRAT OR REPUBLICAN.I AM PERSUEDED BY NEITHER PARTY WHEN IT COMES TO VOTING,NO MATTER WHAT THE VOTING IS FOR PRESIDENTIAL OR COUNTY SEATS,STATE SENATE,ETC.

Their behavior is typical of young Americans who know nothing about geography, politics, etc. Argentina is the most dangerous country in Latin America. Recently, over a million Argentines marched in the street begging for stronger security measures. These two silly women could be kidnapped and cause an international incident which we need like a hole in our head.

Maybe people reading the “media” should be a little more intelligent, and realise that not everything printed /reported is credible(in fact less and less as time goes on).
So many comments made by people appear to have accepted that the story reported is 100% true !
And we wonder why the media peddles their sensationalist stories?
Try it “with a grain of salt ” folks !
I’m not sure if this saying is exactly correct but this is the gist of the message

These are not children being discussed. They are no longer “girls” but women who are old enough to have graduated college and have real jobs and theoretically learned how to behave when on a dimplomatic visit. The press has not overstepped and invaded the privacy allotted to presidential children. They are now adults and should be judged by adult standards.

Or don’t you believe this administration lies habitually?

Posted by: getagrip already | November 28, 2006, 8:10 am 8:10 am

skimming over these comments, i see a couple of trends – many people dislike and some just downright hate the president. given his abysmal record, his pension for secrecy and his tendency to be dishonest with the american people, he probably deserves this scorn.
…and then, there’s this other odd reaction — a sort of blind, stammering, generalized vilification of everything “liberal” or “left”. there’s a twisted logic in those comments; they chafe at criticisms of g.w. bush — who is merely ONE american — but are fine to insult, deride and even threaten an ENTIRE GROUP of americans.
so, you left-haters, explain: is that hypocrisy, or are you just part of the right-wing propaganda herd?

Posted by: p-rex | November 28, 2006, 8:13 am 8:13 am

You know this should not even be news. Bush and most politicians in Washington have sent several american sons and daughters to fight in a senseless war where several have died. The need to mature and act responsibly. It’s fine to go on vacation but their whole life doesn’t need to be a world tour at taxpayer expense. People have mentioned Chelsea Clinton. Bush’s letting his 25 year old twins travel around the world to be kidnapped or even killed is a great reason to have the twins travel once Bush is out of office where there is no danger to his family. Second, what young women in the US aren’t a little arrogant, playful, maybe a little wild. Still this article didn’t mention any of that. They were at a game, in the lobby of their hotel and were shopping.
This was only about their lack of security – shame on the press for trying to sesationalize it by call them girls and giving it a headline that sounded like the daughters did something wrong. And shame on some of you posters who added your won foul interjections.

Boy, what an obvious phoney news story! When will you people learn that as Bush’s ‘wizard of Oz curtain’ dips to expose the utter phoniness of him, and his administration, these types of stories invariably pop up in the media. Remember the media is Bush’s creator, and stalwart curtain raiser, against exposure by the light of truth! His daughters are obviously in no danger whatsoever, but the story is spun so that it appears that they are. The average dummy will ask: Why aren’t the president’s daughters protected? The answer is they are protected, but the so-called terrorist threat, is about as phoney as Bush, so they continue to cavort in Argentina without any real incident. It’s all phoney folks, just like their daddy, the war on terror, the war in Iraq. This phoniness also extends to the Democrats and Republicans too! As long as people in the U.S. are dumb enough to fall for B.S. like this, it will unfortunately continue.

The Bush Twins need to visit Iraq for a tour of duty.

Posted by: Tom3 | November 28, 2006, 1:17 pm 1:17 pm

Looks like the U.S. Embassy is denying that they told the girls to leave. I’m in shock that so many posters are literally attacking these girls. They’ve done nothing wrong. If those from there computers had the chance to travel, they’d be all over it.

Posted by: Laura | November 28, 2006, 1:29 pm 1:29 pm

What is wrong with people in this country? It is not where these girls are, what they are doing, and who cares, but the fact that they have a responsibility for compassion, being who they are, like it or not, to the American people who are suffering from all aspects of the war. Tough beans, stinks to be you, but you have certainly enjoyed the perks of being who you are, now grow up!!!

“Leave the Bush twins alone…?” Once again I see that republicans have the memory of a gnat. Your right wing media didn’t leave Chelsea Clinton alone did they? Hypocrites.
Hint; when you enter politics, you’re whole family gets to be under the microscope. If they like it or not, they are representatives of the U.S. now and should act that way. Oh wait, money grubbing drunken brats, okay never mind.

Posted by: Spoon | November 28, 2006, 2:35 pm 2:35 pm

twins? When did this happen? Never heard of ‘em.

Posted by: DCR | November 28, 2006, 3:09 pm 3:09 pm

OK, let me explain this in simple terms. One of the world most powerful men has a daughter who gets her purse and phone stolen.
Why is this news ?? What if the purse snatcher had a gun or a knife ? It’s a story because now the whole world knows they are vulnerable to attacks, and better yet, they know where they are. It’s a story because Argentina is hostile to America. It is news because Secret Service can not properly protect them, and that is why I assuming that the US Embassy asked them to leave.
Last week no one knew where they where and no one knew their security was so dismal.
So in case some of you still don’t get it, we invaded Iraq because someone tried to kill daddy, what do you think would happen if someone hurt or killed one of his children ?
Sorry folks, this non-sense about party on and have a good time is silly at best. These are some very important people, wars have been started over far less. These two should at a minimum be on serious lock down when visiting a country hostile to the US. Sorry, but when your pops is the prez, you don’t get the common folk experience.

Did anyone else read the blurb at the end, says it all, don’t you think?

Official response from the US Embassy in Argentina:
We have seen a report from news sources stating that Embassy officials strongly suggested that President Bush’s daughters curtail their visit in Argentina.
This is false, as are other aspects of the report referring to the Embassy’s position on the visit.
The Embassy welcomes the visit and has provided close support and cooperation.

Sadly, these girls are representatives of our country if they want to be or not. Do they do anything else beside partying??? At 25 yrs. I was working OT at a job I hated while studying for law school and volunteering in my community. They reflect a lot about our leader’s parenting abilities and their basically-absent mother. The Gore girls, Kerry kids, and Chelsea Clinton are much better public servants. And, this is what we are looking at indeed, our future political leaders. I’m aghast!

Posted by: Chelle | November 28, 2006, 4:13 pm 4:13 pm

What makes this newsworthy is that the national media announced the twins were going abroad to be good will embassadors, but once again the nation was lied to by the mainstream media or government, and the twins haven’t changed their irresponsible ways; they’re just doing it in another country. Their behavior is shameful and immature. The reason you never heard about the Clintons’ or the Carters’ children is that they were raised better.

ee! Iraq is Bush’s war!! Rember the twin towers in N.Y. Remember the Cole. There are more under 25′s killed in N.Y. state in a year (auto accident, shootings) than have been killed in Iraq.
“Would you rather fight Terrorist in Iraq or N.Y., I prefer Iraq. Car bombs are just as deadly in N.Y. as Iraq. WAKE UP AMERICA, we are next.

Gee Snape, You are following Bin Laden’s playbook to a tee!! Let Al Qaeda practice fighting a war; get the military stationed in Saudi Arabia out; set up other military posts in the Middle East; OH YEAH — BANKRUPT AMERICA IN THE PROCESS!!

I take offense at what is going on. Especially with our tax payers money. To begin with you see these Bush women coming down the steps of Air Force One. I take offense at Air Force One being used for the benefit of these women taking a vacation. What happens if President Bush should have an emergency and has to get across the U.S. or the world ASAP? You guessed it right. Another plane would have to be pressed into service. That takes precious time. Then I take offense at the money these women spend. I do not know for sure but I would bet the money for this vacation as well as the money for all of their partying is coming out of the tax payer’s pocket. Maybe I am wrong, (if I am I appologise) These so called twenty five year old girls are not girls by any stretch of the imagination. They are women and it seems have not been taught any responsibility. It’s time they come to the party, started earning their own living and become the wage earning people every one of us are expected to be. It’s a moot point that their dad and mom have money. Some of our folks had money too but our sons and daughters are expected to earn a living just like their folks do. We need to start thinking of our president and congress as our servents the way it was originally and not someone to be put upon a pedlestal and worshiped. Let them know we voted them in and we can vote them out.

Its obvious: the real Bush girls are hidden away in Nantucket; the girls in Argentina are actualy operatives hoping to be kidnaped by Al Qaeda thereby infiltrating their underground network. It appears that the jihadists are either too smart to fall for the ploy, or fearful that their agent might be overcome by the charms of these wily, freespirited charmers. Only time will tell.

this is just negative gossip. the women are good for america’s image in argentina. it’s very brave and loyal of them to stay. how would it make argentina look if jenna and barbara left because they felt unsafe in that country? that doesn’t promote a good public image – especially since their off-duty security was attacked in an attempted mugging and barbara’s purse was stolen at dinner…

They got to see a good game, a 4 to 1 victory of Boca Juniors over Colon of Santa Fe, in the Bombonera Stadium. The passion in that crowd is worthwhile seeing. Please let them be. If you have hardships in your personal life, it’s not because of them.

let bush put his daughters where his mouth is…….in Iraq with the rest of our sons and daughters.

These are spoiled rotten, nasty brats from a rotten, nasty family. I bet the purse incident was her own fault and not of the Secret Service. I am sick of seeing and hearing about these two dimwits…

Posted by: Misty | December 3, 2006, 8:59 pm 8:59 pm

First-if you don’t know them STOP the PERSONAL ATTACKS. And second – this story should focus on the apparent lack of security surrounding the Presidental Family. Despite what I may think or feel about his policies, I don’t wish any ill on his family.

Posted by: Superstar73 | December 5, 2006, 3:44 pm 3:44 pm

running naked in the hotel??*draws mental image*
Now if somebody had taken pictures of that it would be so funny.
About their security, who cares if they dont care why should anybody care.
I wish them no ill, but i would like to see a video in the internet of them getting wild. Just to see how the decider would react.

In response to the lady who finds it odd that two 25 year old women are being called girls… If they’d like to be called women they shouldn’t be galavanting around the world while tax payers spend their hard earned money on Secret Service Security. Women live in the real world, girls live off their daddy’s trust fund and date soccer players in Argentina.

Posted by: BigDaddyNipps | December 11, 2006, 2:43 pm 2:43 pm

I respect all those people who have posted and realized that at the age of 25 females are no longer considered girls but young women. It seems quite contradictory that males in this country are labeled as being men from the age of 18+ yet women as old as thirty are still referred to as girls. Also there should not be generalizations of what a 25yr old woman’s life should look like because some women are mature and some are not, there is no single criterion. As far as the trust fund comment goes, that’s their business. There are many people in the US, both women and men who live off of trust funds, and while I am not one of those people, as long as they don’t bring harm to anyone or break laws, what they do should be none of our concern.

Perhaps Chelsea and Amy didn’t get this kind of publicity because they didn’t behave like the spoiled spawn of the Smirking Chimpanzee do.

Posted by: Eamon O'Connor | January 12, 2007, 3:06 pm 3:06 pm

Why does everyone seem to know the Bush girls except me. You must, the way you all “know” that they are spoiled, nasty, rotten, sinful. Don’t turn your anger against their father onto these two women. Do you people not think that if you had the means you wouldn’t allow your children to take such a vacation every once in a while and enjoy life. Don’t complain about taxpayer money paying for their security, rather, be thankful that brave men and women voluntarily do these sorts of jobs. They went on a vacation and attempted to enjoy themselves. Any of you would have done the same, yet they hundreds of comments from people who know nothing about them claiming they are the devil incarnate.

“Odd that the visiting daughters of a head of state should cause such animosity and furor in a civilised country. or, possibly Argentina is not so civil as some would like to believe? And of course Hugo Chavez is a shining example of a ‘great’ leader and is well known for his diplomatic talents. . . not.”
Ga’tor:
Hugo Chavez is not Argentina´s president. may be you are not so civil as you would like to believe.

When I was 25, I was working full time at a demanding job, finishing up my M.A., and protesting the bombing of
Cambodia. These young women are a disgrace.

Posted by: Yanaar Lee | October 31, 2007, 11:08 pm 11:08 pm

President Bush’s daughters are young adults, able to make their own decisions and able to take vacations abroad, which increases their appreciation of different countries. They clearly felt secure and probably had the secret service watching over them carefully at all times, even though the secret service must try not to look too obvious. Barbara and Jenna should get to enjoy civil liberties, also, and should not be made to feel like they must be caged just because their parents have devoted themselves to public service, doing their best to protect everyone’s civil liberties and civil rights, including their own daughters, of course.

Posted by: Renee Marie | April 24, 2008, 4:26 pm 4:26 pm

President and First Lady Bush, who are doing their best to protect everyone’s civil liberties, don’t want their daughters to live in a cage. The president’s daughters deserve freedom and civil liberties, also, just like the rest of us, whose American-style freedom is well protected by our leaders.

Kessler is an equal opportunity BOTTOM-FEEDER. If I ran into him at a party, I’d spit in his hand
While I disdain the tenure of Mr. Bush (he certainly hasn’t the courage or competence of his father), I despise people who use their meager skills to spew garbage – true or otherwise – about the children of any celebrity.
Someone once said, “Kessler’s car arrived…but Nobody got out.”

Hmm, this is really funny to contrast this with the treatment of Michelle Obama’s recent trip to Spain. Especially the comments.
