Actually, isn’t it more correct to say that the military and other intelligence agencies have failed to capture UBL and the others? Bush directs the policy but they have leeway on the ground to do what is necessary to capture or kill the terrorists. Focusing on one person, like UBL, is pointless, however. When we look back at these extremely critical and defining moments in our country, when the war of religious fascism comes to our shores and rears its ugly head, as it’s already beginning to, when our traditional values have disappeared and we have no principles to answer to, there will be those of political influence who will have to answer for their supposed “strategies” in the name of simply winning an election. They have joined the enemy with no regret. They have their power, that is all that is important. It seems that none of those commenting here have lost a military family member or friend in Iraq since the “Mission Accomplished” declaration by the Commander-in Chief. What the administration has been doing is not working, period. If the GOP were big enough to admit it and consider other approaches, then maybe a lot of them would still have jobs. The electorate did not vote for terrorists, they voted against the simple-minded policy of “stay the course” and “mission accomplished” and “business as usual”.

That should have been the first hint about what the Democratic plans for Iraq were. Osama and company are not into “psychological” warfare–they prefer the direct method–bombs, bullets and jet airliners. So when they take credit for the Democrats getting elected into office, that should be a very BIG red flag to the Democrats–damage control should start immediately–but, no damage control, no mention of this on any network news cast–or on their websits either, btw. This battle could be over if the Republican majority hadn’t insisted on abandoning the pursuit of those that attacked us on 9/11 to go into Iraq.

Having been in IRAQ in person, the smartest comment above is the one that says the point of the statement by AQ’s #2 is to divide us and our efforts against them.
I will tell you I am a conservative, but the most important thing in this fight should be to win, no matter who we have up at bat. Know these things about this fight:
1. The average Middle Eastern person is nothing like the average, middle class American. Material or otherwise, they do not have much to focus motivation toward. They also do not have a way toward upward mobility that even our lower class Americans have with a little luck and some hard work.
2. Couple that with the facts that they have all of the honor in the world to build and protect, and all of the frustration of no means to generate and secure that honor as defined by radicals, and you have a very frustrated Middle Eastern populous.
Those are big sources of this conflict. That is why they could pay a man 1400 IRAQI DINAR (or $1 U.S.) to set off an IED in BAGHDAD when I was there. For that dollar, the paid individual gets revenge (“respect and honor”) for any perceived wrong by attacking our forces AND an ability to contribute to the means of securing their family’s honor by receiving a $1 reward which helps to provide for their family.
Wherever individuals do that, we seek out, and in many cases find, the culprit and either arrest or kill him. The terrorists know that and are more than willing to sacrifice that individual to hold up in the P.R. game to his countrymen as a martyr and a motivation for why more should do the same. But as a pure ‘game of numbers,’ that one act in and of itself cannot be the only front they must fight against us because they will lose.
So they also attack our public verbally and mentally by telling our ‘losing’ representative party that THEY lost the election, our winning representative party they DIDN’T REALLY WIN, and their people, who exist on the hope of honor and respect coming their way, that AQ won it on their behalf.
OUR election!!? Hell – WE won our election because OUR DEMOCRATIC PROCESS, changed throughout the years based on conditions of a dynamic world, continued to operate as a representative process as our forefathers hoped it would.
I personally hoped for a Republican win because I saw in my year in BAGHDAD that the IRAQIS respected our President, and the terrorists loathed him, because he said we would fight them at every turn and they figured he was the central point of power in our very powerful nation. I think if you would ask our President, he would tell you he is the central person for carrying out the will of the American people, from whom ALL strength in our nation flows. But continued Republican domination in our government by a party whose leaders say we are coming to kick some butt and then do so – like we have and continue to do in IRAQ where needed and despite what you see on your TV – would have been our signal that we are serious about defending ourselves against those who would just as soon see all of us dead.
We The People, by majority vote, did not do that, however. So what we need is less whining and plain old hard-nosed leadership that says at every turn we will defend our people no matter where, when, or in what capacity is required. It really matters not who is ‘Up There’ as long as they will not put up with the end of our nation to THE MINORITY in the Islamic religion who do such a good job with – and believe vigorously – P.R. over the truth.
We are at WAR with some people who want us wiped off the face of the earth because they believe we are not fit to exist here with them, ladies and gentlemen. And it looks to them like they are winning EVERY TIME WE PUBLICALLY CRITICIZE OR QUESTION OUR LEADERS because they simply cannot fathom doing so themselves. Their leaders in the past and in some present cases would imprison them and kill their families for doing so.
Folks, we are not a stupid people. Lazy and selfish sometimes, granted. But we put a man on the moon right out of an idea in a rousing speech from a former President. We will only lose THIS conflict of ideologies if we do not fight it smartly.
I say let our differences about domestic politics be as large and exciting as anyone’s imagination will allow. But do not lose sight of a united front against those few who are actually our enemies abroad.

What is really suprising too me is that very few people in this country seem to remember that we did not start this terrorist uprising. 1: Impeach Bush for violation of the Authorization to use Military Force Act in Iraq of 2002, based on intentional manipulation of intelligence, throw him out, and then appeal to the UN and world community to take over the stalemate in Iraq:
2: Call an international summit to meet on the Israeli-Palestinian problem, with a committment to final settlement, 2 states, with Jerusalem as an in ternational City.
3: Withdraw all US Troops from Iraq and Afghanistan, turning military duties over to NATO with NON US leadership. Or better yet, a Pan Arab or Muslim occupying force.
and 4: Withdraw all US troops to continental US borders. We can let someone else be the worlds police if they want.
With these things done, we MIGHT have a chance to end this madness, which was the result of US Imerialism, interventionism, and hubris.

Instead of hearing from the talking heads on CNN, CBS, NBC, ABC, and yes, even FOX, I’d like to hear from the soldiers in Iraq. I’ve heard too many times (NOT from the NY Times, CNN et al) how things are getting better in Iraq. How Iraqi’s are stepping up. What a beautiful endorsement for freedom, that the lines to join the police and Iraqi military are still long; this in spite of the attacks.
AND, critically, why must WE have such a fast food mentality? My Dad served in Europe after WWII as part of the occupation. He did not arrive until 5 (five, that is between four and six) years AFTER the war ended. Standing orders at his time of service included breaking up unauthorized assemblies of citizens. Rules were in place to separate the GIs and the civilians. Some soldiers were murdered by locals. (Acts of terrorism?) Graffiti stating “GI go home” was everywhere. All this happened, even though we shared a common religion and very similar cultures with the occupied countries. Again, five years after the war.
Why, then, must we be “done” in Iraq after three years where the religion and culture are so strikingly different; where Saddam ruled for thirty years whereas the Third Reich lasted little more than a decade?
Indeed, turn off the TV (especially CNN, et al) put down the NY Times and study some history, you might learn something.

You say we should not have gone to Iraq in the first place. I have a sister, a brother, and two cousins who are in the military, and who have all been in Iraq. They all refuse to watch the news now because of their false portrail of the situation in Iraq.
No, I’m not claiming that the war is not going well… I am, however, claiming that the news media’s portrail of the Iraqi populace not wanting us there in the first place is near criminally wrong. I use the words “criminally wrong” here because it is likely America will lose this war because of this false portrayal.
The bottom line is: we are there. We CAN NOT leave without finishing this war. To do so will to have the lives willingly given for the ideal of freedom given in vain.
Regardless of who instigated it, Democratic victory was a victory for the terrorists. The election campaign for the Dems this season was primarily the removal of US troops from Iraq. This is what the terrorists want.

Securing Iraqi Borders .. with our military is a whole different issue then securing our borders here. WE SHOULD OF AND COULD OF RIGHT BEFORE WE WENT IN! (government/military admits to that)
Our military/national guard etc. is equipt to secure our borders but it is such a hot issue for the Democratic Party and Republican Party alike.

Its not Democrat its not Republican. It is the American citizen who does not realize what it takes to win a war. The last war we won was WWII. Why? You accurately acknowledge that politics precludes us from securing our own borders. It couldn’t be done under President Clinton. It hasn’t been done under President Bush either. There are millions of undocumented people here already entrenched. Many have used identity theft to survive here. It is the same politics that determines our military logistical capabilities abroad.
The initial question was whether the war/terrorism impacted American politics in the November elections. The democrats did not make gains due to the way they parted their hair. Nevertheless, I agree with tr–both parties have let us down–our government’s leaders have failed to protect us.

let’s see…as of today Jan 06, 2007…the Dems sent a letter to Bush…no surge of 20K troops to Iraq…the N Koreans are getting ready for another nuke test…the Afgan spring offensive is a month away…Iran to celebrate its nuke success by March…and Israel is dusting off its tact nuke plans to strike Iran nuke sites…while Russian and China sit on top of the tree like vultures. If anyone has any doubt of what’s going to happen, just flash back to the film of 1975 when journalists and South Vietnamese were scrambling to roof tops to be choppered off as the North Vietnamese and VC were quickly approaching. That’s what happens when a Democratic Congress withholds funds to support our troops and allied forces. That was the most shameful demonstration of weakness ever and it could happen again.

In all reality, it is simply not possible to wage a war against something that is not tangible. For all the lames out there, let me explain: Terrorism happens in all countries by all races, sexes, ages, backgrounds, political parties, and religions. Do you understand the word propaganda? Say something no matter how untrue to insite a response in your enemy or you allies. Did you all vote? Do you send letters to your Congressmen and Congresswomen? There are not a great deal of positive suggestions for what’s next – from either side of the aisle. Regardless as to who is in office now, and what any of that may mean to people in other countries, we should be clear to our elected officials that we are not happy with the current track.
That’s the message that was sent, not from anyone overseas, but from the people who live and vote here in America. I agree with Hassan (Jan.8th), we can be divided over the details, and discuss them all day long. What we have done is replace some people in Washington. Now, we make sure that the ones who are there are doing the next best and right thing for our troops, our country, and for people everywhere.

What I can’t understand is the Americans who are stupid enough not to remember that is what Reagan and Charlie Wilson did to get the Russians to their knees. Someone asked Al Quaeda, “Do you really think you can bring a super power like that down?” They replied, “No, but we can get them to bring themselves down trying to get rid of us.” This was always their strategy. Our CIA taught them how. We fell into our own trap, which is why Bush Sr. wrote the article stating that we shouldn’t invade Iraq. It will not change there. As soon as we leave it up to them to govern themselves as we are going to be ordered to do anyway, they are going to return to being just as crazy as they always have been. They will probably hire someone worse than Saddam to keep the religious crazies in line like last time.
