New Chairman of Armed Services Subcommittee Blasts Condi Rice, Aims to Block Bush Surge Plan

The gloves are off in the new Congress. Hawaii Democratic Congressman Neil Abercrombie, the outspoken new Chairman of the powerful House Air-Land Subcommittee, has gone on the record with a highly personal attack on Bush’s Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice. Abercrombie referred to Rice as "the most overrated underperforming individual in executive authority that I have ever seen" in an interview published this week in the "Honolulu Star Bulletin." In response to a follow-up question by Star Bulletin columnist Richard Borreca whether race or gender had anything to do with it, Abercrombie continued, "She constantly gets a pass. Who knows if the whole question of race and gender come into it?  But I can’t account for it except to say she isn’t up to the mark." THE BLOTTER RECOMMENDS With DeLay Gone, Pay Raise for Island Factory Workers Payback Time: Who the Democrats Will Target Click Here to Check Out the Latest Brian Ross Webcast Abercrombie’s spokesperson confirmed the quotes and told ABC News today the congressman does indeed have a highly critical view of Rice’s performance not only as the current Secretary of State but also in her previous role as Bush’s National Security Advisor. As to the congressman’s comments on race and gender, the spokesman said Abercrombie was responding to a follow-up question. "It’s an old reporter’s trick to put words in a question to get the respondent to use them himself in the answer, but nonetheless the congressman was quoted accurately." Click Here for Full Blotter Coverage. Abercrombie, who now, as the chairman of the Air-Land Subcommittee, has oversight of the Air Force and Army ground troops, further signaled his opposition to Bush’s new war plans today by co-signing a bill to require new authorization for the war in Iraq.

Personal attacks from Dems? Unheard of…

Posted by: Tom | January 11, 2007, 5:46 pm 5:46 pm

Where can we read a full transcript or see the video? I’d love to hear everything said. I’d love to see her squirm in her chair haha. Let’s see some more officials speak the truth for a change. I hope nobody brings race or gender into it, to me it’s just the person, Condi Rice, that sucks at what she’s doing. Just like all the other cronies.
Don’t stop with her! Let’s hear it! Excellent Mr. Abercrombie, thank you. We aren’t blinded by MSN anymore, we know what’s going on and it’s time you people in Washington realize it.

Posted by: A Concerned Citizen | January 11, 2007, 5:56 pm 5:56 pm

Thank you, Sir, for stating the more than obvious. Between photo ops and shoe shopping, exactly how is Ms Rice earning her paycheck?

Posted by: abby | January 11, 2007, 5:57 pm 5:57 pm

If the shoe were on the other foot, i.e., if a Republican congressman suggested that a Democratic African-American White House official was second-rate b/c of her race, I assure you that this story would not be buried on the back page of ABC’s website. Rice gets a pass b/c she is a woman and is African-american? Give me a break! Shame on Abercrombie, he is a bigot. Plain and simple.
Is this what the Democrats plan to do with their majority status?
I’m surprised that Abercrombie did not call her Dubya’s slave. It goes to show you that the Democrats hatred of all things Dubya is revealing the dark under belly of a party that talks the talk but assuredly will never walk the walk.

I now note that they are taking addresses as well as names. Next week do we get a free trip to the camp.

WOW..finally some one who will tell it like it is…Mr. Abercrombie did give Dr. Rice a small pass..he forgot to mention her bald faced lying to the 9/11 commission…(under oath!!!)

Posted by: chabuka | January 11, 2007, 6:34 pm 6:34 pm

Jim Jones, get some new glasses and re-read the artcle.
You should take note that Abercrombie did not suggest “that a Democratic African-American White House official was second-rate b/c of her race,” but rather he was responding to a race-baiting question by the reporter. He said he did not know the reason why, whether the reason was, AS THE REPORTER SUGGESTED, gender or race related, or whatever, but she was constantly getting a pass on her ineptitude.

Posted by: Rose Colored Glasses | January 11, 2007, 7:19 pm 7:19 pm

I love how the rwingnuts are trying to make this a race/gender issue.
Rice is PATHETIC!
She’s a pathological liar who is completely inept at her job.
She should have stuck to the piano.

well so the bitterness begins. with all the noise, i haven’t heard anyone suggest another solution. when the ox is in the ditch the object is to get it out. so far all the dems are doing is standing around huffing and puffing. c’mon guys, get behind and push! afraid you might get your hands dirty?

Posted by: newman1 | January 11, 2007, 8:00 pm 8:00 pm

When someone talks about the African American, other people are immediate thinking about ah, ah this is a race and discrimination hatred in question. People should be aware and should not confuse with it.
I think if a person is competent of handle, his or her job it does not matter whether he or she is white or black or whatever their races or background may be and it will benefits all. In this case, she just happens to be an African American, and I think the Senator ABERCROMBIE speaks the truth.

This is not a race issue,he is just telling the truth.I am an African American

Posted by: blt | January 11, 2007, 8:37 pm 8:37 pm

‘i haven’t heard anyone suggest another solution. when the ox is in the ditch the object is to get it out’
Problem is this ox keeps going back into to the ditch every time we try to get it out. Time for a new ox. (Or to put it another way: Impeach.)

Will someone explain in simple words to the mentally challanged and racist Congressman from Alaska that the Dixiecrat wing of the Democratic Party and the Klan are no longer viable career options. Secretary Rice is the former Provost of Stanford, way above anything that Abercombie could possibly attain.

Posted by: Andres | January 11, 2007, 9:20 pm 9:20 pm

Tom – you’re right. Dems should display the restraint of those heroes of conservativism, like Michelle Malkin and Anne Coulter. Or perhaps Bill O’Reilly. Or Rush Limbaugh. And how could a Dem possibly base criticism on job performance, rather than just completely fabricating it? How boring. They really do need to take a lesson from the Republicans. Thanks for pointing that out.

She is one of many idiots in Bu$h’s cabinet. Idiocy is not race or gender specific – just Bu$h-crony specific.

Posted by: suziq | January 11, 2007, 9:50 pm 9:50 pm

Race and gender issues are right-wing smoke screens to obscure Rice’s incompetence and blatant lies to bring us into this fraudulent and bogus war. She is an opportunist for this administration, then she is a consummate consumer for elegant personal accessories, and lastly she is an American – if her schedule permits.

Posted by: Quail | January 11, 2007, 10:03 pm 10:03 pm

Praise the Lord as the religious right would say finally someone with the guts to tell it like it really is. President Bush along with Vice President Cheney and their entire cabinet are the most hypocritical, sadistic, egotistical, delusional, unethical, emotionally stumped group of individuals to ever have been in charge of running our government. These people because of who they are have put our country in the greatest danger more so then any terrorist organization ever could.
As an American citizen I feel really bad for having to say these things about the people who are in charge of our government but enough is enough these people need to be held accountable for putting our country in danger. It is our responsibility as Americans to speak out when those who have the power to do so don’t. It is our responsibility to speak out when our major media outlets remain silent if we don’t speak out who will save our democracy?

The Klan? Really?

Posted by: Matt | January 11, 2007, 10:36 pm 10:36 pm

My hats off to Rep. Abercrombie, this is not an issue about race or gender its about the abilty to do the job or task imposed upon a person. I would ask the readers to think back to one task or job she has completed in the last 6 yrs. She seems to spend more time shopping for shoes, wishing about being a football comm’r, or wooing Canadians than doing her job. I have never seen a Sec. of State, who has spent less time on diplomatic issues. Perhaps she should have taken some cues from her predecessor. Like her boss she will go down as the least effective Sec. of State and National Security Advisor in history. On her watch 911 happened, because she had other things to do.

Well, newman1, the solution is to get out of Iraq as quickly as possible; but, it may be impossible to push or pull your delusional Republican ox out of the ditch when he refuses to acknowledge that he is up to his neck in a quagmire of his own making.

Condi Rice isn’t an incompetent, lying, hypocrite because of her race. We don’t hold her ancestry against her.
Let’s use Martin Luther King’s principle – and judge her by the content of character.
This would make Ms. Rice an incompetent, lying, hypocrite because of her behavior.

Posted by: Bob Owen | January 12, 2007, 12:48 am 12:48 am

For all of the flying around the world she does, meeting with foreign dignitaries, she seems to accomplish nothing, and successfully negotiate nothing. It reminds me of her job handling all of the intelligence and warnings of a terrorist attack she was receiving before 9/11 – again incompetent as National Security Advisor. When are Republicans going to start putting the American People first rather than constant loyalty to the Republican party. Her incompetent performance and remaining in her job is a clear sign of this.

If you had to work under W and all his lies, you’d seem incompetent too. Outside of the federal government, I’m sure Ms. Rice is a quite capable woman. However, when all of her responses are scripted per this administration’s wishes, she does indeed come out looking a bit worse for the wear.

I don’t want this Rice!
For the record, I am not an African American …
I believe that Dr. Rice has had ample opportunity to be a moderating influence on the curent NEOCON administration, perhaps more so than others – even because of her race and gender, but especially because of her PhD. In spite of all that she has going for her, her leadership has been a disappointment.
I think she is cooked up and CON-demented…. Rice.

Personal attacks from Dems? Unheard of…
Posted by: Tom
Nice one, Tom. This mess we are in is obviously the Democrats’ fault, and it is right to heap scorn on them. It makes no difference that he did not personally attack Condi – he had the gall to criticize her actions. How dare they try to shift blame to the people who have been in power these last years.

Posted by: smike | January 12, 2007, 10:55 am 10:55 am

Bush needs a sycophant like her as she has discredited women and blacks by her performance or lack of it. One can only hope that she abandons Bush when she is faced with war crimes trials this regime deserves. Impeachment is demanded by your Constitution and Bush and Cheney are easy marks which means Madam Pelosi is to become our first woman President and serve out the term adding up the disaster that is the Bush family legacy. Then we can pass on Hillary and enjoy Ms Pelosi and her diligent and excellant work to try and recover from this “supreme” mistake…

Posted by: frodaddy | January 12, 2007, 10:56 am 10:56 am

JimJones,
Just read your post on the Abercrombie issue and am wondering if you can read. I am not a “Dem,” but the man at no point “suggested that a Democratic African-American White House official was second-rate b/c of her race.” This seems like a willful misinterpretation, though I suppose somebody really could be that slow. She does constantly get a pass, as any casual observer will likely have noted—though, indeed, “Who knows if the whole question of race and gender come into it?”
If it were a Republican talking, there’d be no “Who knows?” about it; it’d simply be “she constantly gets a pass because she’s black.”
What is interesting is that Abercrombie carefully sidestepped the question and pointedly refused to make the statement you impute to him–he was shutting down a question raised by the interviewer, who was obviously fishing for some racism. Compare:
“She constantly gets a pass. Who knows if the whole question of race and gender come into it? But I can’t account for it except to say she isn’t up to the mark.”

CONGRESSMAN ABERCROMBIE is so correct in his assessment of the sitting Secretary of State. It is obvious that Negropointe was sent over to oversee the MESS that has been created at the State Department since 2004. She is good at traveling but accomplishes nothing upon her arrival or departure. Her bringing over KAREN HUGHES and her slogans is her solution to the serious problems that exist in our world…she is in way over her head and should resign,,,She was as ineffective when she held the national security adviser position, but loyalty allways over rides competence in this administration………………………….Charles Belenchia

Will someone please tell OxFam that the congressmen in question is Hawaii Democratic Congressman Neil Abercrombie and he represents Hawaii not Alaska — and who’s mentally challenged??

Posted by: Phyllis Culbert | January 12, 2007, 12:41 pm 12:41 pm

This is the most uneducated group of people I have ever seen; No wonder the democrats won – the people who voted for them are unintelligent, uneducated and are like sheep – they just follow. If the liberals would just take a minute and think with their brain and not their emotions, they might see some sense in what our current administration is trying to do. But no, it doesn’t matter what the President or his cabinet does or says, it is the wrong thing. Think about it.

As a black man who feels exactly the way Rep. Abercrombie feels. I find it curious that republicans who to the man and woman harbor racist sentiments, which is obvious in their stance on anything that even remotely addresses historic racism; that they can even gather the breath to utter the word bigot in reference to this issue is shameful. Then again these are the same people who stand on warships, and piles of stone to scare us in to accepting their ideology. B.S.Condi is a fool who sold her sould and sold out years ago, I can care less what she thinks or what republicans think about my saying it. Also Black republicans and Black democrats are different in ways only black people will understand. Holla!

Posted by: Wes | January 12, 2007, 3:26 pm 3:26 pm

An ad hominem argument, also known as argumentum ad hominem (Latin: “argument to the person”, “argument against the man”) is a logical fallacy consisting of replying to an argument by attacking or appealing to the person making the argument, rather than by addressing the substance of the argument.
So what is General Abercrombie’s solution? Declare defeat and depart Iraq?

Posted by: Altair | January 12, 2007, 3:33 pm 3:33 pm

Susan, are you educated? I don’t believe so! Get over it, there is more than one reasons that Dems took control of both house and senate – American people are tired of liars like Bush, and Condi.
I’m not white, but I feel so ashamed of Condi Rice. She is a cauculated liar, very capable at multipulating words/situation. I believe, if it’s not because her race and gender, she would have had got a lot more critism, a long time ago. Yes, her race and gender has in fact saved her some grace. She hide behind Bush, but who doesn’t know that she’s done a bad job.
Apparently, graduated from Stanford does not guarantee any decency in her politics.

Posted by: Felicia Temple | January 12, 2007, 3:53 pm 3:53 pm

I bet 90% of the people agreeing or disagreeing with Mr. Abercrombie couldn’t even articulate what Ms. Rice’s job responsibilities are, and in what areas she is falling short or excelling. Quit jumping on a bandwagon just because someone on “your side” said something inflammatory and ‘exciting’ for you.

Father Time should shave the beard and get with the modern world. I mean, come on… look at that guy. I don’t necessarily disagree with him, but for cryin’ out loud, if we stuck his Santa Claus lookin self on a plane to act as Secretary of State instead of Condoleeza Rice, we would be the laughing stock of every foreign nation short of the North Pole.

In the end this comes down to another stupid decision by a stupid administration. Our best way forward in the War On Terror with Islamic extremists is to solicit support from moderate islamic countries. One small problem in order to facilitate that we send our top emisary and force Islamic men to negotiate with a woman which by definition in their culture makes them not men. Hmmm another well thought out strategy.

Posted by: BooMan | January 12, 2007, 5:06 pm 5:06 pm

Rice is more than bad at her job, she’d do less damage if she played video games all day. Not just her, but most members of the Bush cabinet are frequent liars (under oath) and incompetent ambassadors. And will you stop wasting your breath saying “African-American” and just say “black,” for Christ’s sake?! Not all black people are of African OR American descent, not all black people have ancestors who we dragged from Africa and enslaved unfairly. The only reason ignorant people find the term more respectful is because it has more syllables, and we’ve learned that beating around the bush is always prefferable to being blunt. She’s black.

Posted by: Mary | January 12, 2007, 5:26 pm 5:26 pm

Rice has no credibility. She is a joke. I watched her testimony and it was ridiculous. You, can tell by her shrieking voice, when she lies and tells just plain crap.
She is the alibi of the Bush gang – black and woman. Sorry, but that’s how it is.
She claims to have a degree in Russian language, but she can’t speak or read a word.

Posted by: Guenter | January 12, 2007, 9:19 pm 9:19 pm

Ms. Rice’s only role should be that of a professor at a small, small college, somewhere in a small, small community, where she can teach both classical piano and political theory to young minds that may not mind. As for Secretary of State, she leaves much to be desired; but I cannot at this time provide this nation with alternatives or suggestions. However, one major suggestion is that the next President and Secretary of State must have both street smarts and book smarts. He or she must know Smith, Voltaire, Hegel, Kant and Newton, a bit of Physics, Chemistry and price elesticity, as well as what goes on in some hood either in south Los Angeles, Watts, or Compton. Ms. Rice, you may be book smart, but I am certain you cannot drive a car doing 110 miles an hour, while talking on a cellphone and writing down some numbers, while planning your next move, quickly and with aplomb.

Posted by: jose | January 12, 2007, 11:09 pm 11:09 pm

Ms Rice “constantly gets a pass” as much as “she isn’t up to the mark”, to paraphrase Rep. Abercrombie, for the same reasons many other well-connected and equally overrated individuals who performed poorly in this administration : (SHARED)IDEOLOGY.
Think about Brown of FEMA and the other catastrophic fools spending billions of dollars and getting next to nothing done after Katrina.
The young upstarts who worked in Iraq and wasted more billions there
even as they watched Sadr’s militia getting their hands on unsecured Iraqi guns and American guns.
The other “experts” who got all the plum jobs going back and forth between lobbying and government.
And think about this : A little knowledge is a dangerous thing? What about a lot of it, poorly digested?
Knowledge which doesn’t go beyond recitation or exhibition of any amount of learning, knowledge with little understanding, that is the dangerous thing. Without personal judgment filtering and sorting, interpreting and further thought inspiring, all that knowledge is not just dangerous but deadly. It is, many times, what they shamelessly call “expertise”– a blank check to screw up.
A PhD and a self-professed student of history can, indeed, be much overrated.

Posted by: Verbatim | January 12, 2007, 11:11 pm 11:11 pm

Jim,
with outmost respect — Mr. Abercrombie is not seeking to become the next Secretary of State, and, moreover, he is not the virile, young man he once was; thus, his beard, his look is no different to that of an Abe Lincoln, Van Buren, or any of our previous leaders of the US Congress or the executive branch of our federal government. I firmly believe that your comments are quite infantile in nature. We should all stick to the facts and information at hand, provided by this site, and must refrain from commenting on an individual’s age, gender, or physiognomical appearance.
Again, I send you this opinion without most respect.

Posted by: Sanders Kaufman | January 14, 2007, 5:04 am 5:04 am

It is really a pity that most people want to add race and gender when speaking of ineptness and incompetence. Race and gender have nothing to do with either one. Nor does the level of one’s education. Condalezza Rice is the most inept, incompetent, ethically challenged and condescending individual it is ever been my priviledge to witness in public life with the exception of George W. Bush. I am black or african-american (I personally detest that term)and a woman who is also highly educated. I have failed to understand through out this period of time why anyone, much less, a sitting President but, that is another story, would consider her opinions valuable. Is it not amazing how incompetence manages to find incompetence? It is time, whether Democrat or Republican, someone said what he or she truly felt and believed. Now, that is someone I could have confidence in…
