Former CIA Agent: Foggo Betrayed Us

"In an organization of professional liars, we have to be honest with each other. So if the charges are true, it’s a betrayal of everything the agency stands for," Tyler Drumheller, former chief of CIA Clandestine Operations in Europe, told ABC News today in reaction to the news of Kyle "Dusty" Foggo’s indictment on fraud charges. "It’s a sad day for Dusty and a sad day for the agency." "It was a surprise when Foggo was first appointed to the job by then director Porter Goss, because he was really not well-qualified," recalls Drumheller, a 25-year CIA veteran who said Foggo’s promotion by Goss appeared to be a case of cronyism. "Porter was not a day-to-day manager, and a lot was deferred to Dusty. Foggo was extremely powerful and put in charge of everything that went on, operationally, analytically.  He even had a say over assignments." "I feel sorry for Dusty. I’ve known him for a long time, but it’s also sort of the sad ending to the legacy of Porter Goss." The former director has not been named in connection with any of today’s allegations, but Drumheller faults him for "mismanagement and poor focus" during his brief tenure as the agency’s director. On the other hand, the fact that a senior, senior officer is being held accountable is good for morale and sends an important message inside the service," said Drumheller, author of the recent book "On the Brink," a critical account of how Drumheller says the White House "compromised intelligence" leading to the Iraq war.
