CIA Rushing Resources to Bin Laden Hunt

Armed with fresh intelligence, the CIA is moving additional man power and equipment into Pakistan in the effort to find Osama bin Laden and his deputy Ayman al Zawahri, U.S. officials tell ABC News. "Reports that the trail has gone stone cold are not correct," said one U.S. official.  "We are very much increasing our efforts there," the official said. People familiar with the CIA operation say undercover officers with paramilitary training have been ordered into Pakistan and the area across the border with Afghanistan as part of the ramp-up. Pakistan officials say they are aware that CIA teams have increased their presence in northern Waziristan since last September when Pakistan withdrew its troops from the area under a much-criticized "peace deal" with tribal leaders. Click Here for Full Blotter Coverage. Director of National Intelligence Mike McConnell testified last week that current intelligence "to the best of our knowledge" puts both bin Laden and al Zawahri in Pakistan.  It was the first time a high-ranking U.S. official publicly identified Pakistan as bin Laden’s hiding place. Past intelligence has indicated that bin Laden often changed locations in March, traveling to hiding places in the mountains once the snow cover begins to melt. Weigh In: Where Is Osama bin Laden?

This is fascinating – does Director of National Intelligence John M. McConnell hold any indirect sway over President Musharraf’s decisions regarding the deals made with pro-Taleban tribal leaders?

Does ABC News want to politically bust the Pakistani government’s chops?

So can we take this to mean that they do not think they got OBL and Zawahiri in the Mandaghel strike?

Posted by: Brian | March 5, 2007, 5:07 pm 5:07 pm

If true, this should not be in the news. Shame on you ABC News.

Posted by: Steve | March 5, 2007, 6:20 pm 6:20 pm

So our beloved leader is under pressure because of the treatment of our Heroes when they come home needing our help.
So all of a sudden we think we might know where OBL and his henchmen might be.
I think Karl (I didn’t leak the identity of the CIA agent honest) Rove has been on the telephones again.
When OBL’s head is on a platter at the Rose Garden at the White House will i believe a word of these so called leaders.

So what’s the deal? Are we close to catching Osama or not?

Posted by: James | March 5, 2007, 6:32 pm 6:32 pm

What next?-a map showing the exact location of the CIA operatives in Pakistan? Shame on ABC..

Posted by: RT | March 5, 2007, 6:41 pm 6:41 pm

Yeah! right! I will belive it when OBL and Ai Zawari is killed or captured. Remember ISI (Pakistani Intelligence) is the mother of Taliban and Al-Quida.

Posted by: Girish | March 5, 2007, 6:43 pm 6:43 pm

I certianly hope this pans out…Capturing one or both of them would provide a moral and psychological victory over militants everywhere, although I doubt it will stop attacks in Afghanistan, Iraq, Europe or even the US again.. it looks like decenteralization has become the norm

Why on earth would you post this on the web? These people need to be found and killed. Why on earth you would do this we’ll never know.

Again, How old is Osama. Its the cause ,not the leader, that motivates those against the US.Do away with 1 leader and leave the cause and another takes his place. United states out of Saudi Arabia was what was first demanded. Now its west out of the mideast.Their territory, their country, their choice. We will fight forever if we stay. The very well-documented on-line video “Loose Change” very convincingly proves that Osama Bin Laden was, and has been, very well-protected by the CIA even before 9/11. More than that, he most likely had less to do with 9/11 than our own gov’t officials who set up the “terror attack” to scare people into supporting the Patriot Act and giving up many of our civil liberties. I’m sure OBL is still being protected by the CIA in return for him being Bush’es scapegoat for 9/11

Posted by: Lorie | March 5, 2007, 6:58 pm 6:58 pm

Osama Bin Laden is dead!! He died of kidney failure. This is all just crap that the Bush administration puts out there to give his war on “terror” a leg to stand on. He got his hand in the pocket of the Bin Laden family pocket way to deep for him to want to catch him even if he was alive…And oh yeah, Bin Laden is alive and we know where he is so lets tell the whole world we are going to this area to get him too. This whole thing reeks of more Bush Bull!

If it’s in the news, it was meant to be. ABC is just complying.

Posted by: jc | March 5, 2007, 7:40 pm 7:40 pm

Why in the world would the media even report information such as this?? OBL and Zawahiri read the news the same as we do, and this only aids them in their run and hide tactics. I second Steve’s comment of “shame on you, ABC news!”

For sure it would be great to get these people – but how many of our young people will to die to accomplish this goal. I don’t believe the 3172+ lives lost in Iraq justify the gains of the mission. I no longer trust the motives or the decision making abilities of the Bush/Cheney White House.

Posted by: Hank | March 5, 2007, 8:19 pm 8:19 pm

It’s not hard to see why a new push is being made to find Bin Laden. Just look at Bush’s political situation. He definily would like to get him before he’s out of office, and catching him would definitly take Iraq off of the front page, at least for a while.

ABC is clearly not leaking any highly classified information. They are quoting U.S officials who absolutely know what they say will be released to press sources. U.S intelligence would not release anything that would hinder there hunt for Osama, but are more likely using the media as tool in their hunt for Osama.

Posted by: Joey | March 5, 2007, 8:37 pm 8:37 pm

So, the CIA has been hot-on-the-trail of Bin Laden? They’ve been looking for over 4 years now, so gettng closer is a relative term, but it makes good PR for the agency I guess.

Posted by: Keith Field | March 5, 2007, 8:37 pm 8:37 pm

To Brians “If True” Statement, the only way that it would be released to the media outlets is if Al Quada new the CIA was there anyway.

There is such a thing as “need to know,” and neither we (Americans), or UBL need to know CIA planns prior to his capture. Let us know after the fact please.

Posted by: Mike Bell | March 5, 2007, 8:40 pm 8:40 pm

I am assuming this supposedly new info was “leaked”, which means that it is disinformation designed to mask what we “really” know, or some idiot in the CIA thinks that it would be good for our public to know that we are still hot on OBL trail. Why not catch him first and then leak all of the stories that describe what a great job the CIA did. What was the true purpose of this disclosure of “we know more than we’ve been letting on”.

Posted by: Timothy J Bradley | March 5, 2007, 8:40 pm 8:40 pm

Great job, ABC News. The same news organization that will complain when we don’t capture them after they report on us closing in.

Posted by: James | March 5, 2007, 8:42 pm 8:42 pm

Posted by: Todd | March 5, 2007, 8:42 pm 8:42 pm

Why would you put sensitive information out like this.
Is there any way this can help our country catch UBL?
Obviously you are more concerned with appearing to have a “scoop” than winning this war.
Are you also trying to warn these people so they can be extra vigilant? Do you ever think of the consequences to the men who are risking their lives over there when you put something like this out? Do you think they don’t see what’s on the internet? Inexcusable.

I mean, haven’t our intelligence agencies learned their lesson? We announce everything publicly before something actually happens. It’s ridiculous. When will we learn our lesson and operate without this stupidity?
The only thing I can think of that would be rational by doing all this is if they thought such an announcement could induced bin Laden movement that could be seen via satellite. But I don’t expect any tactically wise decisions from these people whatsoever.

Posted by: Henry | March 5, 2007, 9:32 pm 9:32 pm

I only hope they capture him and give him a fair trial to prove we are not the savages they are.

Posted by: Sparkenickle | March 5, 2007, 9:32 pm 9:32 pm

If this is true, and I believe it to be, we have known about it for some time. We do not just let our intelligence services leak stuff like this out for fun. Neither would we tip off OBL before we had a very good grip on the situation. I think he’s going down. And yes, I happen to be a democrat so don’t give me conspiracy theories….

Posted by: Larry | March 5, 2007, 9:45 pm 9:45 pm

yeah right, abc knows crap, this may have been planted out there on purpose for a reason…

Posted by: fer | March 5, 2007, 9:45 pm 9:45 pm

Ditto….a gut check on your morality and ethical standards is due. Do you really find it necessary to print this story? For the sake of the nation, and the thousands that have died because of these two, hold yourself to a higher accounting.
Couldn’t you run another Anna Nicole story?

Posted by: Mike | March 5, 2007, 9:47 pm 9:47 pm

Too bad our troops are “surging” where OBL isn’t.

Hmm…No news here. Wake me up when you id the bodies.

Posted by: Jim | March 5, 2007, 9:48 pm 9:48 pm

yeah right like we don’t know where Bin Laden is.
how about the Dubai hospital on 9/11 for starters with a cia agent or two guarding our asset in the continued fight against terror?

Posted by: rick shadow | March 5, 2007, 9:49 pm 9:49 pm

Excellent CIA tactic: to broadcast the current status and location of its secret operations.

Posted by: Al | March 5, 2007, 9:49 pm 9:49 pm

The press is just a tool for the government to use when it is useful.

Posted by: Greg | March 5, 2007, 9:50 pm 9:50 pm

This is not news. It’s speculation.

Posted by: bobdog | March 5, 2007, 9:50 pm 9:50 pm

Why don’t you just tell them what day and time we’ll be there as well? It is ridiculous to be putting this information out for all to see.

Posted by: Greg | March 5, 2007, 9:52 pm 9:52 pm

I’m all for freedom of the press, but if this story is accurate I’d rather read that the CIA has captured UBL. And, not that the CIA is RAMPING UP its efforts in Pakistan.

Posted by: Ben | March 5, 2007, 9:54 pm 9:54 pm

For all we know, this information could be days old. I think if bin Laden were captured, the public wouldn’t know about it for some time. I agree with limitation of information in regards to military operations, but we don’t know how current this information is.

Posted by: Bob Johannsson | March 5, 2007, 9:59 pm 9:59 pm

I agree with Bush, Rice, et al that it doesn’t make any difference whether bin Laden is dead or alive. Why waste money trying to find him unless the CIA is trying to deliver his back pay?

Posted by: Keith Stern | March 5, 2007, 10:00 pm 10:00 pm

Gee, I guess it’s not a secret now.

Posted by: Michael | March 5, 2007, 10:07 pm 10:07 pm

I have to agree with Steve here. It’s a great thing to let the American people know what’s going on that has to deal with us, but it’s not like our enemies can’t see this. They know full well what we say because, guess what? They have the internet too.

Posted by: Josh | March 5, 2007, 10:08 pm 10:08 pm

Waste of time, searching in the hills and deserts. Bin Laden and Al Zuwahiri are probably in ISI safe houses in Islamabad or Rawalpindi, like Khalid Sheikh was.
The “Al Qaeda” IS the Pakistan government and its Army and ISI, as everyone knows.

Oh I see, its OK if American operate on foreign soil…good I like that…that means foreign troops can operate here.

Posted by: jason white | March 5, 2007, 10:13 pm 10:13 pm

If they capture or kill him, it would be a major victory in the War on Terror. Nevertheless – mark my words – the Democratic leadership will downplay it as “too little, too late” and there will be another military “scandal” in the news within days.
Think of this post when it happens…

Director of National Intelligence Mike McConnell testified last week that current intelligence “to the best of our knowledge” puts both bin Laden and al Zawahri in Pakistan.
Yes, shame on abc for reporting 1 week old testimony.

Posted by: Kaiser Komes | March 5, 2007, 10:21 pm 10:21 pm

between satalite photos and drone recon flights,we should map every square inch of land suspected as an OBL terrorist training camp…once identified, send in armed drones, cruise missles and several special ops units to disinfect the area.

Posted by: Russ G | March 5, 2007, 10:22 pm 10:22 pm

Ya right, this administration cant get anything right. And for all you that are trying to get on ABC for writing this, Get a life, what do you think OBL doesn’t know he is wanted and is a huge target?

Posted by: jace | March 5, 2007, 10:35 pm 10:35 pm

Leave it to ABC to publish our CIA intelligence secrets

Posted by: Mike | March 5, 2007, 10:36 pm 10:36 pm

Why do you tell us this? Now Bin Laden may know that we can find him with increased man power. This only forces him to hide harder then before making this a waste of time and resources. This is really disappointing.

Posted by: hugh | March 5, 2007, 10:36 pm 10:36 pm

I agree. What good does this do us to publicise the hunt for this madman? All I want ABC news to tell me is that the search is on and then tell me when they found him.
Might as well give him a GPS with their location on it.

Posted by: Fred | March 5, 2007, 10:40 pm 10:40 pm

What a wonderful thing that ABC News finds it necessary to tell Bin Ladin that the CIA is close (if you are a terrorist).

Posted by: Bob Rainey | March 5, 2007, 10:42 pm 10:42 pm

What the heck? This totally shouldn’t be news if it is true. Report when he’s dead don’t hinder the efforts to bring him to justice.

Posted by: Buddy | March 5, 2007, 10:43 pm 10:43 pm

How do we know this is not just psyops, trying to smoke them out? Then you’ll get OBL in a video, which might give them some helpful information to go on. Maybe ABC are just being patriotic in going along with the CIA on this one?

Posted by: Frank | March 5, 2007, 10:44 pm 10:44 pm

Brian: great scoop and cant resist reading it but why the heck did you run it? It doesnt need to be in the news. We are still at war.

Posted by: John | March 5, 2007, 10:48 pm 10:48 pm

Is it possible that this information is being released by the administration in response to the Democrats in Congress making it known that they want an increased presence in Afghanistan?

Stupid and irresonsible. Especially when American lives are in jepoardy to find the man.

Agreed, this item should not be news. Shame again on ABC news

Posted by: rick | March 5, 2007, 11:21 pm 11:21 pm

It really angers me that this kind of information is pursued and published as a news story. Why tip our hand? We need every advantage attainable, and seeking and publishing any details of secret missions, such as this, reduces our advantage against OBL and his network. I agree with a previous poster: “Shame on you ABC News.”

Posted by: CWS | March 5, 2007, 11:23 pm 11:23 pm

I say redraw the boundaries of south east Afghanistan (like Helmad province) and have a secret deal which swaps some of those areas with Pakistan for the tribal areas and Waziristan. Make it secret a-la the 1939 Molotov-von Ribbentrop pact. Make it so Musharraf looks good. Then, they’ll be on the Afghan side and plan accordingly for an assault.

Posted by: Steve | March 5, 2007, 11:23 pm 11:23 pm

Posted by: David Newton | March 5, 2007, 11:25 pm 11:25 pm

How can you expose CIA agents and put them, their operation, and their contacts, and a friendly and helpful government all at risk? To tell us nothing? So what? Are you purposely trying to undermine them or do you just not get it?

Posted by: ed | March 5, 2007, 11:25 pm 11:25 pm

And if there are fresh leads. Why are we reading about it from the CIA on here? Now Bin Laden has been warned and can safely escape.

Posted by: Joe | March 5, 2007, 11:29 pm 11:29 pm

The story was probably placed by the CIA to get Bin Laden or his operatives/supporters to change their patterns to give our operatives and spys some clues.

Posted by: user | March 5, 2007, 11:30 pm 11:30 pm

Why would you be reporting on something like this? I study Media Law and hey not EVERYTHING is news worthy! Why don’t you just not tell the world what the US is doing, we might be a bit safer.

Posted by: Brandon | March 5, 2007, 11:32 pm 11:32 pm

Am I the only person who thinks there is absolutely no chance Bin Laden is even in the Middle East? I imagine him somewhere such as Sweden or China far away from any manhunt.

Posted by: Nathan | March 5, 2007, 11:34 pm 11:34 pm

It’s going to be difficult to find a man that’s already dead.

Posted by: Rain | March 5, 2007, 11:35 pm 11:35 pm

Cheney must have twisted Musharraf’s arm to the splintering point last week.

Posted by: Surly | March 5, 2007, 11:39 pm 11:39 pm

I believe he is in China. Afghanistan shares a border with China not far from the Tora Bora area. The western part of China has a large Muslim population which includes some extremist groups who may be willing to hide him. The US would be extremely hesitant to send troops or operatives of any kind onto Chinese soil given the potential for a serious nationalist backlash in China were it to become public knowledge. China itself exercises fairly weak control over the area. If I were Bin Laden, that is where I would go.

Why have they not caught him already? Just follow the dialysis machines in Waziristan, for god’s sake! How hard can that be?
The only conclusion I can come to is that the hunt for BinLaden would have been a distraction from the “War on Terror”.

ABC News shouldn’t always be reporting on these secret stories about bin Laden. Some things need to be kept confidential so the enemy does not discover this information. Until bin Laden or al-Zawahri are brought to justice, you then can report on that story.

Posted by: Brandon | March 6, 2007, 12:17 am 12:17 am

Agreed Steve. This is information we do not need or want. We want the story after things have been taken care of. This nonsense pre-reporting does nothing but undermine the effort. Sure I want the news but I want it after the mission has proven successful. Until then – lips should be tight.

Posted by: Tony | March 6, 2007, 12:18 am 12:18 am

No way will we ever catch Bin Laden with Bush in office. These idiots cannot do anything right. Maybe we should send Cheney in to Pakistan on a hunting trip, hell he shoots everyone else. I am sure he will be greeting with Flowers and Chocolates just like Iraq.

Posted by: John Hall | March 6, 2007, 12:22 am 12:22 am

Bin Laden is in Pakistan. Well…. duuuuuh. This is why americans are idiots. The war on terror is a joke. BinLaden has been in the lawless tribal areas of Pakistan since 2001-2 . Glad to see your government might actually be doing something right for once. But then again, no BinLaden = No war on terror = No bags of money for the military industrial complex. The USA is circling the bowl!

It is in the inerest of both
ABC & LORD “BUSH” to promote such news.
The failure to catch LADEN & ZAWAHIRI prompted Bush to get busy in IRAQ(a la hurt ego).It will be costliest exercise ever to Americans even if they withdraw within 3 yrs from now.

Posted by: Jefferson | March 6, 2007, 3:24 am 3:24 am

Steve, it’s highly unlikely that Bin Laden doesn’t already realize that the CIA is in Pakistan and is looking for him. I would be surprised if he did not hear of this well before ABC knew about it.

Posted by: Mark | March 6, 2007, 3:24 am 3:24 am

I must agree with Steve. This should not be broadcast for the world and OBL to know. However the shame lies with “government officials” in this administration for putting out this information for political purposes. Once again, this shows that few politicians can be trusted with intelligence. It’s kind of hard to sneak up on the enemy with politicians telling them your moves just to make political points.

Posted by: Lou | March 6, 2007, 3:28 am 3:28 am

Co-in-ky-dink? I think not! Five years later in Iraq- no “dead or alive,” no “smoke ‘em out of cave” (unless your name is Saddam) and now with the White House stained in the blood of malfeasance and Walter Reed- now “they know Osama is alive”??? Pa-leeze; he’s been staying at Hotel Halliburton all this time, just waiting to make a cameo- just in time… to invade Iran!

Great news. Was it an ease up and see where they run tactic and all the recent Cheney Pakistan meetings planned? Not likely, governments doesn’t seem that smart or Machiavellian.

For those of you concerned about ABC News spilling the beans, read the part about the source of the info being “U.S. Officials.”
From experience it appears that more-often-then-not a story like this happens when the U.S. wants the information, or their version of the information, out there. (Though sometimes it’s more for political then security reasons.)

No doubt they will be focusing upon the province to the North of Waziristan, the Kurram Agency, whose capital is Parachinar and which used to be an old Al Qeda base of operations against the Soviets.

I’m sure glad ABC News and Brian Ross are secretly reporting this. We wouldn’t want to risk tipping off OBL of the CIA closing in on him.

Posted by: Dave Hammond | March 6, 2007, 6:39 am 6:39 am

I agree. This should not be publicly reported on. There is no scenario I can think of where this report helps the CIA get OBL.

Brian, often times news is leaked for a reason. It is most likely being used to flush him out. When you’re on the move, you’re more likely to be seen. This is true with a general knowledge of location.
With intell, everything is not as it seems.

Posted by: Ryan | March 6, 2007, 7:24 am 7:24 am

I agree, if this is true, I don’t want the whole world to to know until after it’s over. Just plain stupid to announce it.

Posted by: Marv | March 6, 2007, 7:24 am 7:24 am

The comment about the trail going ‘stone cold’ could be a ruse to get bin Laden to relax his security measures. Additionally, the comment about ‘fresh intelligence’ could also be a ruse to get bin laden to ‘make a move’ and reveal his position. Who knows in the world of intelligence?

Posted by: john | March 6, 2007, 7:28 am 7:28 am

And why on earth are you broadcasting this information to the enemy???

Posted by: Diane | March 6, 2007, 7:29 am 7:29 am

Bin Laden is way too valuable alive and on the run than dead or captured; he’s the ideal bogeyman to keep us all under our beds begging the government to restrict our freedom even more so that we’ll be safe. If we all lived in prison we be completely safe. They’ll never capture Bin Laden unless they risk losing funding, and then we’ll see another 9/11 type event to nudge us into sacrificing more freedom and more tax money. Money and power, baby – that’s all that matters to our leaders.

Wow! Incredible timing. Just as president Bush is rolling out his new terrorism speaches we get anonymous sources telling us that we’re hot on the trail of Bin Laden. Watch as the president delivers his speaches this week — the smart money says he’ll mention “recent news reports” that we’re on the trail of Bin Laden. This story is not much more than a whitehouse press release. Really, what does the story tell us that we didn’t know before. It makes one vague claim with zero offered for proof or confirmation.
I hate to be so cynical, and I really like Brian Roos, but I feel like I’ve seen this movie before.

Posted by: Mr. Dave | March 6, 2007, 7:48 am 7:48 am

Posted by: Charles | March 6, 2007, 8:41 am 8:41 am

What a great headline this would have made in early 2002. What an incredible shame that we have allowed 5 years and a second unnecessary war to distract us from what should have been the most appropriate direct response – to capture and bring to justice the actual instigator of 9/11.
Tell you what ABC – I’ll make you a deal. I’ll agree to keep reading the garbage about Brittany and Nicole and Paris that constitute 20% of your “news” if you will agree that the next story you will print about bin Laden is one about either his capture or his death.

Posted by: Craig | March 6, 2007, 8:52 am 8:52 am

Posted by: Catherine | March 6, 2007, 9:57 am 9:57 am

How bogus. I don’t disbelieve this story absolutely, but I take it with a grain of salt. Afterall, the report is quoted from a “U.S. Official”. I could quote an ever elusive U.S. Official all day and never be credible. If you can’t quote an identifiable source it’s not worth printing.

Posted by: Chris | March 6, 2007, 9:58 am 9:58 am

This is not information it is propaganda. Why else would a ‘U.S. Official’ give this story to ABC news in the first place. The News agencies are doing this FOR the administration.
Most of the un-named ‘US official’ statements are coming straight out of the Vice-Presidents office.
So the real question is why would the Bush administration tipping off Bin Laden?
If the offensive were real, they wouldn’t, so we can only conclude that this is just more BS from the Bush administration to cover there own buts/failures.

Posted by: Jim S. | March 6, 2007, 11:40 am 11:40 am

Again, everything in this Brian Ross story has been common knowledge for a long time. You had better get up to speed if any of this surprises you because YOU are the one that is in the dark! Learn what happened to the CIA and Pakistani Army that led to the Warziri Accord. Learn the history of these “ungovernable” agencies. DO you know what NWFP and FATA mean? If you don’t, you are clueless about the real war on terror. Google “The Fourth Rail.”
Support our troops. Don’t listen to the polititians who want to run away from the mess they made in Iraq. US and Coalition must stay in Iraq until the government can maintain law and order. Iraqi men, women and children have died in far larger numbers than we since the invasion. We owe it to Iraq, to the world and to ourselves to see this thing through.

The cherry on the top is the “treasonous” liberal, drive-by media vilifications that follow it.
Now, not only is the administration actually doing this thing they’re talking about, but a new strawman is erected to attack – ABC for posting this “secret” in a time of war…

to all of the “shame on you ABC” folks… : reread the article, the article clearly identifies it’s source as the Director of National Intelligence Mike McConnell during his testimony to Congress. There’s nothing new here; for 6 years, we’ve known that OBL was in those mountains not to mention the 10 years prior to 9/11.

Posted by: derek | March 6, 2007, 1:23 pm 1:23 pm

How is it that so few of you no so LITTLE about the actual workings of the CIA ? Because you’re not supposed to, that’s why. CIA leakers…real CIA leakers…leaking actual covert ops details get killed for their trouble…as well they should be.
These “news” stories are pure smoke and mirrors…as well they should be. Only a paranoid fool would concluse otherwise.
OF COURSE we know that the enemy has internet access, just as surely as we know that a story hungry reporter can be spoonfed information that the money hungry media will be thrilled to spurt out. It’s a tool….and you’re a tool if you think you know a damned thing they, the spooks, don’t want you to know.

Posted by: myron | March 6, 2007, 1:26 pm 1:26 pm

To all the responders who went down the “shame on ABC” road — please think harder.
ABC didn’t do this story in spite of US officials — ABC did this story because of US officials, who wanted this information out.
Why? Maybe because turning your attention to UBL turns it away from ‘Abu Reed’ or the ongoing debacle in Iraq. Maybe it’s an attempt to show they’re “workin’ hard…”. Maybe both those reasons, plus the “US officials” i.e. the Bush White House, knew some number of partisans would jump on ABC with both feet, yet another distraction.
THINK, PEOPLE!!! Don’t let your politics get in the way of your comprehension of the world around you. Give reality a shot.

Both the Pakistan Observer and Fox News [Faux News or Fox Noise] reported the Death of OBL in Dec 2001. Given that no video image of this man has surfaced since DEC 2001 would not this be the logical explanation . He’s been dead. The so-called OBL “confession” video shows a right handed man with a big round nose. OBL is left handed and we all know that nose. What other International Celebrity has evaded the digital image for 5+ years. Certainly not the former president of Iraq……

For all of yall saying “Shame on ABC news..” how about shame on the official that leaked the info. Do you really think the terrorists don’t already know that the CIA is running around in the tribal area?
Steve’s comment seems to be a bull’s eye!
“So our beloved leader is under pressure because of the treatment of our Heroes when they come home needing our help.
So all of a sudden we think we might know where OBL and his henchmen might be.
I think Karl (I didn’t leak the identity of the CIA agent honest) Rove has been on the telephones again.
When OBL’s head is on a platter at the Rose Garden at the White House will i believe a word of these so called leaders.”

It is hard to believe that OBL is still on the loose after all these years’ efforts. It doesn’t give you a lot of confidence in our countries’ ability to pull off such a major goal.

Posted by: Harry L | March 6, 2007, 1:57 pm 1:57 pm

“Leaking” is just part of the political toolbox. The information value of it is very rarely if ever to be obtained in what it says. What it says is implausible.
But if seen in the context of adding pressure on the Pakistani regime to comply in supporting the attack on Iran as Cheney’s visit a short while ago seems to have failed to assure, that does seem much more logical.

Posted by: Albert Bakker | March 6, 2007, 2:00 pm 2:00 pm

Reading all these comments saying “shame on ABC for releasing this information” just drives me crazy. Are you all really so gullible?
For all of you who think ABC news is the first to know about this and is revealing some sort of timely secret information — get a clue about who knows what and when.
If this is on ABC news today, it means either (1) The Bush administration is once again releaseing info to the media so Americans like yourselves (i.e., gullible) will have some renewed faith in the U.S. government and again sign on to the administrations backward ideologies, or (2) the information is already outdated and Osama is long gone.
Do you really think Pakistan’s intelligence services doesn’t know about US movements inside the Pakistan borders? They’re closely tied to OLB, so he would have gotten such info long before some ABC news correspondent.

Posted by: Peter | March 6, 2007, 2:01 pm 2:01 pm

All you people telling ABC to stop giving information to terrorists NEED TO LEARN HOW TO READ.
“…U.S. officials tell ABC News.”
“‘We are very much increasing our efforts there,’ the official said.”
So it’s ABC’s fault that US OFFICIALS are giving them information, and then they are REPORTING THAT INFORMATION! GASP!
This “treasonous media” nonsense is getting about as thin “Restoring Diginity to the White House”

This could be part of the misinformation campaign to “smoke out” OBL. ABC saying we are after OBL again is not new. What is new is the latest intell on his whereabouts. Of course, the best news would be that we found 2 smoking holes in Pakistan with the remains of OBL and Zawahiri in small, small pieces would be best.
Trust me, the spooks are on to OBL. I doubt any mission to get him has been compromised. I hope our guys get their man and soon.

Posted by: Monarch | March 6, 2007, 2:04 pm 2:04 pm

Some of you are SUCH idiots!!!
Not everything is leaked for a reason!!
If so, then why all the hubub over the Scooter Libby So called leak???
Some things are leaked for a reason, a lot are not. And a lot of the are leaked by enemies in the adminisration, trying to destroy it, trying to make it look bad, any number of reasons.
It’s YOU people that need to get a grip.
God there are SO MANY idiots here!!!

Nothing more than mis-direction on our part. In Pakistan? Hmmm, let’s think about that. Would our gov’t. really alert the world to thte whereabouts of these clowns?

Posted by: Greg | March 6, 2007, 2:10 pm 2:10 pm

Why is this information any of our business at this point in time. Let’s let our operatives deal with OBL and his idiot friend, Al-Zawahiri, and then…by all means, feel free to let us know what and how it happened.

Posted by: Chuck | March 6, 2007, 2:17 pm 2:17 pm

The only way OBL will be found is to excavate Tora Bora…..he’s loooooong dead! ANYONE who thinks he’s alive is a moron!

Posted by: BT | March 6, 2007, 2:32 pm 2:32 pm

With the Walter Reed scandal in high gear, no wmd’s, no plan b, Scooter found guilty, and so many problems the admin can’t handle, this is BS propaganda. All the sudden, OBL, missing and ignored for 5 years. Apparently the readers are not aware of many intelligence officials have complained that OBL and crew were allowed to walk out of Tora Bora. Bush has said several time he didn’t care about OBL and recently a general has said he didn’t matter. What has been divulged in this article?

Posted by: Logic | March 6, 2007, 2:41 pm 2:41 pm

Its hard to find Bin Laden in all that decomposing matter. HE’s been dead since 2001.

Posted by: The truth | March 6, 2007, 2:43 pm 2:43 pm

The news was leaked in order for OBL and company to read about it and make an escape. The CIA then watches who makes a fast withdrawl to Afghanastan. It’s called flushing out the rabbit. Scare them in to running and they may take the bait. It worked in Iraq.

Posted by: Mike | March 6, 2007, 2:50 pm 2:50 pm

The government can use the media as a smoke bomb… it’s going to be a lot easier to catch him on the run, than in a cave. Isn’t it funny that Pakistan is playing so friendly, and Chaney just paid them a nice little visit.
Watch out for new weapons in Pakistan India…

For all you screaming “We are at war” you can not wage war on and idealism or a tactic. Doesn’t work that way. This is not a problem that can be solved militarily.

Posted by: Brian Emenaker | March 6, 2007, 2:52 pm 2:52 pm

Definition of irony: Brian Ross reports CIA actions inside of Pakistan on the same page where an investigation of a non-leak of a non-covert agent results in several very real convictions.
Hope those men in the field know how much the media really respects the lives of covert agents. Maybe next the LA Times can tell us where they live and what kind of cars they drive.

Posted by: Brant | March 6, 2007, 2:55 pm 2:55 pm

ABC has just reported that a lone sniper has OBL in his sights and is preparing to pull the trigger. So long as OBL doesn’t find out the cross hairs are on him and duck at the last minute, we will….aw, damn it!

Posted by: Rich | March 6, 2007, 2:57 pm 2:57 pm

Ridiculously suspect that suddenly Bin Laden is a hot topic… again.
but it goes in line with everything else that is suspect in this war on terror…

Posted by: Angsta | March 6, 2007, 3:15 pm 3:15 pm

Ummm. Wouldn’t Osama be assuming that the CIA was still after him and in Pakistan if he is still alive??? I would! Ohh yeah you yanks ave been very close to capturing him before and still no cigar! I’m beginning to enjoy this episode of the running man and his fat pursuers.

Posted by: Kiwi | March 6, 2007, 3:21 pm 3:21 pm

I love the “thanks for tipping off the enemy” comments, are you guys really that naive and stupid?
Do you really think we are giving them information they don’t already know? please!
The day we figure out and admit that the people we are fighting are not braindead morons, and quit treating them like they are – will be the day we start winning this war on terror.
ABC has not released ANYTHING that will help ANYONE keep bin laden hidden.
I feel nothing but sadness for your extreme lack of common sense and/or logical thinking ability if you are truly not able to figure that out.

Posted by: angsta | March 6, 2007, 3:21 pm 3:21 pm

If you believe the Bush administration is suddenly serious about going after Bin Laden and Zawahiri, you were probably one of those who also believed that Iraq had weapons of mass destruction and that Saddam Hussein had “links” to Al Qaeda.

While our wounded brave man and women get crapy treatment in US’s best hospital, OBL gets royal dialysis at Pakistan’s hospital in Peshawar city.

Posted by: girish | March 6, 2007, 3:30 pm 3:30 pm

Idiots…as if Al Qaeda didnt already know the CIA along with probably other intel services were already in Pakistan hunting them. Do you honestly think they didnt already know this? Why do you think they behead people accusing them of spying for the US. This article didnt reveal anything that everybody doesnt already know. Honestly, use your brain and stop blaming the media for everything.

Posted by: Dizzle | March 6, 2007, 3:36 pm 3:36 pm

Steve, Jerry seriously bros, what color are the brownies you’ve been eating? The truth is that OBL is in the sub basement of the White House. My friend Dave, who’s a contractor and was doing some plumbing there, accidently saw two men in black uncrating him. Now Dave’s missing but he told me their plan is to have a big unveiling the day before the 2008 Innauguration, to steal Hillary’s thunder. Oh, and Libby’s really a grey.

Posted by: Brian | March 6, 2007, 3:45 pm 3:45 pm

Your question: “So where is Osama bin Laden?” That is a dopey question. Nobody who has posted, myself included, has inside knowledge or knows first hand precisely where the hell bin Laden is. If we did know, bin Laden would have been captured by now. Again, a dopey question.

Posted by: MtMav | March 6, 2007, 3:54 pm 3:54 pm

Doesn’t anybody find it strange that our government has invested countless billions in the largest spy system, agents all over the world, spy satellites that can read license plate numbers from space, systems that tap all telephone and internet conversations – but can’t find an extremist terrorist hiding in caves on the border between Pakistan and Afghanistan? Bin Laden won’t be found – the U.S. Government needs a terrorist to keep fear in the nation alive and defense dollars growing. Why is it we only only sent 10,000 troops to Afghanistan to capture a man who caused so much death and destruction on 9/11, yet we sent 150,000 to overthrow an Iraqi dictator that had no weapons of mass destruction and posed little threat? It’s time for America to wake up and realize that unfortunately we’re being lied to.

Posted by: Governmental Lies | March 6, 2007, 3:57 pm 3:57 pm

The American Dream = Living a lie. I’m just a guilty as the next guy. We all believe what we want to believe, and anyone who is against us is an “idiot”. The so-called news media in the US (and other places as well) cater to the controversy-hungry morons who need their reality dictated to them. If the internet says it’s true, then it must be true, right??
This story is a waste of electrons — almost as much of a waste as the message you are reading now. So, tell me to leave this great country of yours, and retain that anger you feel now. That’s precisely what articles like this are intended to do. There is no conspiracy behind 9/11, it is what it is. Embrace the dichotomy: If you think there was a conspiracy, you are a paranoid leftist. If you believe this atrocity was committed by OBL, then you have been ‘duped by the man’. You can’t argue this stuff people, you’re just venting your opinions in the ether…

My guess is that UBL is waiting to show himself pending a successful high profile global scale attack. This would further immortalize him to the masses and give a fresh dose to his megalomaniac tendencies. He’s insulated by several layers of protectors, difficult for our teams, the ISI, or a sharp eyed predator/hellfire to get at.
The more we trip up their operations the longer he will have to wait to retake the world stage via 21st century media.
Given his preference for a pan-national caliphate (Sunni) rather than the return of the 12 ‘hidden’ imam (Shia), you need a counter claimant to pan-Islam to steal his thunder and provoke him to make a rash appearance and slip up.

And we will fight forever if we don’t stay. We will just be fighting them in our home country instead of theirs.
Right now we are on the attack against them. Quiting the fight only allows them to resume their attacks on us once we go back on defense.

haven’t read all the comments, but those who blame ABC for broadcasting the new offensive didn’t read the part that says “US officials said”. Not even “unnamed sources”. Which begs the question, why would “US officials” want to broadcast this info? Things are never as they seem, particularly with government activities. Anyway, we are, apparently, at war, and as was said in the beginning, the first casualty of war is truth.

Posted by: Greg | March 6, 2007, 4:59 pm 4:59 pm

If the CIA was interested in finding OBL they simply need a search warrant for the White House.

Posted by: brett | March 6, 2007, 5:05 pm 5:05 pm

Well, Bob, do you need me to explain how one person did all that damage at Oklahoma City? Or did the CIA plan that too? Did the Bush administration shoot up all those kids at Columbine? Did Theodore John “Ted” Kaczynski get programmed by Karl Rove to blow up all those people via mail? Was 9/11 a conspiracy? Yes. By the US Government? Not a chance.
Ever notice how when you are driving on the highway, the person speeding past you is a “lunatic”, while the person driving slower than you is a “dummy”? It’s all relative — and none of us are in the driver’s seat when it comes to misinformation.
It’s nothing short of hilarious to think that this article sparked anger in the hearts of some. As if this is some serious blunder on behalf of the media. “Loose lips sinks ships”. Yeah, good one. This isn’t WWII guys, and cbs.com isn’t exactly the enigma machine.

The CIA already had Bin Laden cornered in December 2001. For some reason, we purposely let him get away. The CIA agent who led the undercover team that located him is trying to get permission from his superiors to blow the whistle but I doubt that will happen.

Ignorance. A lot of opinons from the ignorant here.
This report by Brian Ross offers nothing, I mean nothing that hasn’t been common knowledge for a very long time.
You don’t know about the Warziri Accord, yet you think you understand the war on terror.
You think you know about Osama bin laden, but you don’t know his current role with al Qaeda.
You think all of the terrorists or going to die as they are sucked into the war in Iraq.
You think the Democrats are not at all to blame for the misguided war in Iraq.

Let’s be honest for a second, shall we? We’ve known where Bin Laden was for a long time now! Why we haven’t taken him into custody…? Who knows… I do believe this. If we do know where he is, he’s now a puppet for the United States of America and is well protected! Just like we put Saddam Hussein in power only to realize later he would cut his own strings; as will Bin Laden… If we do not learn from our past we are doomed to repeat it, kill Bin Laden and take no hostages!

That is to say it seems Brian Ross has the inside scoop. Secondly, I commend Brian Ross for reporting the news. I do not shame ABC, but shame anybody who does. Shame on you for choosing to remain ignorant to our global policy. Chances are OBL is already dead. The videos are fake. Do some research. Video experts all over the world having been vetting these fake bin laden videos and audio clips as they get rolled out. Bin Laden first claimed he had nothing to do with 911 (real tape) then we get a grainy video with bad sound and a fat dude that’s OBVIOUSLY NOT Bin Laden taking credit for it. Now all we get are crappy audio clips. The videos have been outed by international experts. Won’t see it on FOX and Friends, therefore, it didn’t happen.

“It’s never a coincidence that success in the war on terror always seem to correspond with our whitehouses own shortcomings.”
Then what? It’s manure(factured)? Of course it’s not a coincidence. It’s manufactured news. Just look how far the whitehouse went to keep the NSA story out of the L.A. Times, then the NY Times. If they don’t want it known, they’ll put pressure on people to shut up.
Yes, Brian Ross is nothing but a Judith Miller or a Jane Standley. They just follow orders and read scripts. He probably didn’t even write the article. It probably came out of the pentagons “soup kitchen” itself. This is where the “reporters” go for their stories. That’s what it’s referred to. The “soup kitchen”.

This issue with finding Osama Bin Laden or for that matter, fighting terrorism needs to be handled differantly. You can not allow this to be fought to be conducted only 9-5 Monday through Friday. The government can not take the weekend off and come back on Monday, and say “Where was I”. This war needs to be fought 24/7. Would the Nazi’s or the Japanese during WWII have taken a break on the weekend, so we could play golf. No! The government needs to get it’s act together or history might repeat it’s self.
