Dem Hopefuls Pounce on Gonzales Controversy

ABC News’ Matthew Zavala Reports: Senators John Edwards, D-N.C., and Hillary Clinton, D-N.Y., have found something to agree on: Attorney General Alberto Gonzales has to go.

On Monday, both camps released statements renewing calls for the White House to be upfront about its involvement in the potentially politically motivated firings of several U.S. Attorneys.

In his statement, Edwards said, "It’s time for the Bush Administration to come clean. The White House should immediately disclose all it knows and take responsibility for its actions in the firings of federal prosecutors. No more half-truths, no more political games."

Edwards also asserted that former Gonzales chief of staff, Kyle Sampson, and Gonzales himself are being used to protect the White House.

"Kyle Sampson — and Alberto Gonzales for that matter — should not be allowed to be Scooter Libbied. The Attorney General should resign for his role in this matter, but he should not be used to protect the White House from telling the truth," said the former Democratic vice presidential nominee.

Clinton’s campaign manager, Patti Solis Doyle, also released a statement that criticized the Bush Administration and said, "We know now that the White House’s involvement goes even deeper than we thought — all the way to Karl Rove and beyond."

Attached to Clinton’s letter is a link for supporters to sign a petition for Gonzales to step down.
