Meet The Credit Card Theft Culprits

T.J. Maxx and Marshall’s customers, beware. The discount retailers’ owner announced yesterday that some 45 million of its customers were targeted in the largest credit card information theft to date. Officials say the hackers uploaded hidden programs onto TJX corporate computers at two buildings, one in Framingham, Mass., and the other in Watford, England.  For more than 18 months, they were then easily able to download the 45.7 million pieces of credit card and personal information. THE BLOTTER RECOMMENDS Blotter Millions Targeted by Credit Card Theft: Are You One of Them? World News Video Record Data Theft at Discount Stores Click Here to Check Out Brian Ross Slideshows Florida authorities have since arrested six people of the credit card theft ring, including the suspected ringleader 18-year-old Irving Jose Escobar (pictured bottom right). Escobar pled guilty to one count of first-degree organized scheme to defraud over $50,000.  He faces up to 30 years in prison. Click Here for Full Blotter Coverage. Two of his accomplices, Zenia Mercedes Llorente (pictured top left), 23, and Dianelly Hernandez (pictured top middle), 19, also entered guilty pleas.  Llorente pled guilty to one count of second-degree organized scheme to defraud over $20,000 and faces up to 15 years in prison.  Hernandez faces up to five years in prison for one count of third-degree scheming to defraud under $20,000. Sentencing for all three is set for May 31. Three suspected members of the group entered not guilty pleas: Reinier Camaraza Alvarez (pictured top right), 27, Julio Oscar Alberti (pictured bottom left), 33, and Nair Zuleima Alvarez (pictured bottom middle), 40.  Their next court date is scheduled for April 26. All pleas were made yesterday at the Florida Criminal Court in Jacksonville. Authorities also announced arrest warrants for four other suspected accomplices.  They include Erick Fernandez Rodriguez, Alexis Arcia, Hector Alfaro Rodriguez and Armando Ochoa. Authorities suspect the four at large are in the south Florida area. "This was just the start of a much bigger crime organization," Special-Agent Dominick Pape of the Florida Department of Law Enforcement said of the arrests. As for store customers, officials recommend they assume they are at risk if they’ve used their credit cards at one of those stores or given their personal information, including driver’s licenses and military IDs, to return merchandise.

Excellent questions Lynn. I wouldn’t be surprised one bit if they are all illegal. It doesn’t end here either. They could have sold those numbers to many others too. I heard TJX wasn’t coming forward and it was the FL police that blew the whistle. Shame on TJX for not being up front about this.

I bet they were legal migrants from Cuba. Since the Mariel Boatlift, South Florida, the Miami area in particular, has become a disturbingly crime-filled area.

Is it clear that these people actually stole the credit card data? It was my understanding that they used the data to buy goods, and that it was not necessarily certain that they were the ones who actually stole the data.

Which has nothing to do with it. Let’s not forget of what “descent” the Oklahoma City bomber is and the so called American Citizen (John Walker Lindh) who is now with the Taliban. Obviously ANYONE can commit crimes no matter what “descent” you are. Some people are so ignorant. Whatever.

My thoughts exactly! Honestly, you must have read my mind. Should there be any doubt as to why hard-working, law abiding decent citizens want Immigration reform laws. If you are not here legally, albeit Hispanic, Polish, Italian, etc., you should NOT expect the free ride America has been to liberal in providing!

It is just a wild guess but I don’t think these are the ones who
hacked the system. It looks more like they used the stolen information. But, if I’m wrong and it is that easy for anyone to break into the company system, then the company should be accountable for, or it is like a bank that leave its safety boxes opened then tell us “I’m sorry, somebody stolen your values, but we are not responsible you are on your own

Lynn Wills…
Hello? this happened in Florida, in which case they could all be Cubans. Cubans in the US are generally legal. Comprende?

Posted by: me | March 30, 2007, 1:22 pm 1:22 pm

Uh don’t you think they would’ve made that clear when they took them to the courthouse for arraingment? I’m sure they had to answer questions about their citizenship. I’m wondering if they were from Europe would you ask if they were illegal or not? There are tons, tons of illegals from Europe that came during the dot com boom.

This comment is for Lynn Wills. Isn’t it true that all your caucasian friends are meth addicts? That’s a pretty stupid thing to say about Hispanics.

Posted by: Gaby Ortega | March 30, 2007, 1:25 pm 1:25 pm

Why would someone that has the knowledge and the means to stole 45 millions credit card info would risk 30 years in jail to defraud $50K?
Doesn’t make sense to me.
If he is so smart to hack in the computer, all he needs to do is to create a small program in his computer to charge $1.00 in each card and make 45 millions in an overseas account. That is more logical

Posted by: Jim Benco | March 30, 2007, 1:26 pm 1:26 pm

Regardless they are not American. If there were tighter restrictions on aliens at least we would be ripped off by one of our own for a change!!!!

What!?!?! These folks aren’t the ones who cracked (and hacked) the code? Are you saying persons with Spanish (and Arabic names) can’t program!?

I assume they were going to sell the social security numbers to illegals and terrorists so they can get a jobs and create fake identifications?

I wonder what they used the money for. Probably to buy transportation to bring all their illegal friends and family members here.

Now that Bush has made it difficult for these illegals to work a decent job, they have to do credit card fraud. Pretty soon they’ll be cooking & selling crystal meth like (white) middle America. Start buying guns now!!!
The Hispanics are gonna take over!!!

Posted by: gaby ortega | March 30, 2007, 1:32 pm 1:32 pm

People, this isn’t about race. Most of the really heinous crimes that are committed in this country on a regular basis – pedophiles for example – are southern white men.

They are hispanic..and common sense would say….hmmmm south florida….possibility would be illegals…. who cares, the fact remains that a crime was commited…they are CAUGHT.. American people do get offended by illegals… like it or not… anyone who is smart and who PAYS taxes would agree.. but being illegal is not the issue at hand…

May I suggest that people stop
being so predjudice against one another, If you spent more time on
trying to help solve crimes and less time focusing on color, the world might be a better place to live in. Remember crime comes in all shapes sizes and colors, no one
asks to be born a certain color that’s just the way the lord has intended it to be, and no one knows
what color he is, do we? Let’s stay
focus on the real issue, and guess what I’m not hispanic.

Posted by: andrea phillips | March 30, 2007, 1:42 pm 1:42 pm

I can’t believe what I just read from Kathy about being ripped off by one of our own “for a change”, that is the most ignorant and racial comment anyone could possibly make. Obviously you don’t listen to the news very often because last time I did, 99% of crimes in the USA were committed by Americans. Duh…..

Posted by: Jane | March 30, 2007, 1:43 pm 1:43 pm

Ok, ENOUGH with the race card.
IT does not matter what race they are, they are thieves. Thieves, are any color and any gender..
Hell, it we want to look at history, we can say the Europeans that first came to this country stole plenty.

Posted by: jcmartinez | March 30, 2007, 1:44 pm 1:44 pm

I don’t think race is the prime issue. The issue is the stealing of identities of millions. I think we should all be concerned about checking our credit and make sure we’re not victims ourselves. If they are here illegally, they need to be dealt with for that as well. For those of you making this a race issue and throwing your racist attitudes around, you should realize that identity theft is a huge problem in America today. This affects all of us, no matter what the color of your skin may be or where you’re from.

Whether or not they are illegals, or if Bush has made it tough for them to get a job, or whether their Hispanic, Asian, Arabic, or a Martian is besides the point, the point these indiviuals broke the law! No matter what country we’re in we must abide their laws, that includes immigration. Why is that so difficult for people to understand. Seriously people, if I went to Mexico with 1 piece of ammunition on my possesion, I would be thrown in a Mexican prison and wait 6 months for a trial where some corrupt Judge may pass sentence for violating their law and they could care less if I were American. Ask the Dog the Bounty Hunter about Mexican laws you either abide or you pay. That’s the way it should be here.

Criminals come in all sizes and races. The real issue here is that there are a lot of people and places who put our personal information at risk. They obviously don’t care and we all need to be very concerned about that.
Do what you can to limit risk. And pay in cash.
Also send a clear message to T.J.Maxx and Marshall’s and shop elsewhere.

What in the world does Microsoft have to do with this crime? You’re either a UNIX or Apple freak. If either of those products were so good…why are they not the top OS? UNIX and Apple freaks are just crybabies with less than 10% of the world wide market. So to try and compete, Apple changed to Intel…sounds like sleeping with the enemy to me. And if you want to talk about bugs…Apple 1000+ a week…MS 5 or less a month. oh…and i can buy a great PC for under $1000 with peripherals…Apple $1500 for just the box. Oh give it a rest Lynn…Very observant of you to point out the fact they are of Hispanic decent. What difference does it make if they were illegal or not? Either way they still would have done this, and either way tax payers would still have to pay for it. I would bet these people are citizens, most illegal aliens are not working regular office jobs and creating viruses, they are working the dirty jobs most Americans feel they are above. Unfortunately, your sarcasm doesn’t reflect well on us as Americans as either. “these fine upstanding citizens…” Of course they should throw these admittedly guilty people in jail…however, I cannot stand sarcasm…it’s a childish way to make a point. It’s like you can’t make a point without being annoying at the same time. I apologize if this seems like I’m being more critical of my fellow American than of these criminals, however, we need to realize that most illegal citizens are hard working people, not criminals. 95% of all crime in this country is committed by our OWN citizens, so stop acting like illegal aliens are ruining this country. You know what they say about assuming…

Race isn’t the issue here.
The issue is that TJ MAXX had a major flaw in their systems and they allowed sensitive customer information to be compromised.
Putting the blame on these guys or hispanics is running away from the actual problem.
Both, the criminals and TJ MAXX should be punished for this.

This is just another clear case as to why our government needs to take swift action NOW to enact laws protecting people who committ crims like these and to protect those who are victims. Were spending so much time and money on the war that were neglecting certain things that are happening here on a daily basis to US citizens. ID theft happened to me and it has taken large amounts of my time and money to resolve a matter that happened due to no fault of my own.

Pointing put their possible country of origin is absolutely ignorant. Do you have any idea how many legal, upstanding immigrant millionaires are in the US? Immigrants per capita contribute more to the economy than those born here. And forget the rhetoric- hard facts back that up!

Let me make something clear for all of you ignorant people. Cubans have been in Florida before it even became a State. The first governor of Florida (appointed by the Spaniards hundreds of years ago was a “Cuban”); there are many generations of “Cubans” in places like Tampa and Key West that were here long before any of the “White Americans” made it to Florida. So lets see, first there were Indians in Florida, then came the Spaniards and then the Cubans…for those who are quick to generalize and place blame on ane entire race of people wihtout even knowing if in fact they were Cubans, I only have one thing to say…..”a mind is a terrible thing to waste”.

It pays to pay in hard cash. I think I will buy more gold now too and maybe a larger wheel barrel to cart it all around in. Yes, that will be the new fashion statement, not your big purse, but your big wheelbarrel. Just say NO to store credit cards, or any credit cards.

The illegals use false ID cards sold to them by the hispanic underground. With them they buy homes, cars, etc. For the most part, they are hardworkers only seeking to find a better place to live. Don’t get me wrong, I do not condone what the illegals are doing. Since 9/11, illegals cannot get drivers’ licenses so they are driving around and hopefully will not get caught. Judges in traffic court also don’t do anything about this – they just turn them loose even after a traffic violation. If we don’t start doing something soon, hispanics will rule Central Florid.

I live in El paso, and you are right about needing real immigration laws and building the fence, but these folks are criminals, regardless of race. We unfortunately also need to build more jails to hold these criminals and hire more people to guard them. Until we either create a more moral culture in the U.S. (we are on a gradual decay) and show that there is a punishment for any crime, and that will be enforced, things like this, sadly, will continue to get worse. In 30 years from today (if you are still around) reflect back, and tell me I’m wrong.

Disgusting crime, regardless of their last names.
Equally disgusting to assume that someone who is ethnic is also illegal. Even moreso to assume that aliens in this country will commit that kind of crime solely based on their staus.
I have quite a few ancestors that would have liked the ancestors of those posters to have just stayed on the boats they came to this land on.
I was born in the US, and some of my ancestors have been here since the 1500s before the pilgrims. Others of them have been here for a few thousand years before that.
There’s a good list of crimes that legal citizens have doled out to those of us that were here first, too.

I say build the fence. Countries like Mexico, for one, have stricter immigration laws and protection that the United States does. It’s laughable (then again, so it Bush).
But that’s not related directly to the issue at hand. The fact of the matter is that these people were able to obtain (directly or indirectly) sensitive credit card information and use it. Your focus should be HOW exactly they got it and how we can prevent incidences like this from happening (for yourselves).
Anyone catch, “To Catch an ID Thief” Tuesday night? It was surely eye-opening. I had no idea that the goods being purchased were being peddled out of the country by sometimes unsuspecting people. My point is that we need to better understand the process and not focus the attention on what color their skin is, because it’s not just people of one color doing it folks.

Their ethnic makeup is irrelevant. The real fear is that we live in an age where technology has made it increasingly easier to conduct identity theft. This problem is becoming more rampant and we need private enterprise to come up with solutions for identity protection.

I think the main issue is escaping all. TJM has the bottom line responsibility and is apparently not stepping up. I shopped at one of their stores during this time period. I called to ask what kind of protection they planned to offer their customers and was told I should subscribe to a credit alert program. I called one and was told the annual fee was $89. I asked TJM if they were going to pay for this and the answer was no. TJM is just as guilty as the criminals arrested. We, the shoppers, are the victims and we could be any race, from any country and nobody cares.

Hey prie, I think you need to check yourself before you wreck yourself. I’ve lived in South Central Los Angeles. Maybe you should go there and see for yourself. Illegal Immigration is epedemic and out of control. The schools are broken down, hospitals are closing, violent gangbangers, overcrowed prisons. In L.A. there was even a recent march/rally of African Americans who are fed up with illegal immigration. However I agree with many, let’s secure the border first, then go from there…

It’s so disheartening to immediately see racist reactions whenever a Hispanic name or face is mentioned in a crime. Regardless of the fact that there are millions of legal Hispanics in this country, let alone in Florida of all places, people are quick to assume that we are illegal and have no place here. Remember that many Hispanics (including the people pictured above) are primarily comprised of native blood–the people who were here thousands of years before the first Europeans arrived. Also, as many have mentioned, the fact that these were Floridians suggests the high likely-hood that these are Cuban Americans who are here legally (and partly due to US foreign poliy with Cuba.) Think about the name “Florida;” where do you think that comes from?

Everyone’s quick to pass judment on Hispanics…..you mean to tell me that Third World Countries have better technology than US? TJ MAXX and MARSHALL are to blame……we trusted them with our info…..How could they let low life illegals do this……Im sure there were some LEGAL AMERICANS behind this as well. Keep the peace!

Who cares what their nationality is! Why are all of you stereo-typing them? Does it really matter? Its stupid of you all to wonder if they were from Cuba or Mexico…who cares! What matters is that they were cought! It makes me laugh that you would waste your time posting about ethnicity and ramble on about Bush. Who said we aren’t smart? – Mexican

“Criminal” comes in many skins, these just happened to be hispanic. That’s all. Some of you are the least enlightened individuals I have encountered since…ever. I guess Lynn and Julie and the rest of gang are pure breed Americans. I had no idea Europeans/Mediterranians/Mongoloidswere indigenous to this land.

what i don’t understand is why people are actually surprised at the blatant and subtle racism expressed in the comments… racism is still alive and well people…

We it looks like technology is biting us all in the rear end, what we wanted was fast and easy now it’s just as easy to be robbed. Does it matter what race a thief is when your personal info. is stolen and we all have to pay for this crime, maybe we should go back to paying as you go with cash.

Most of these comments are based on preconceived biases due to race. This basically not only reinforces stereotypes, but also singles out a group of people. This has no longer become a question of crime, but a debate about race. Ignorance has become the foundation of most of these comments. Oh America what would we do without you!

It never fails. People segregate toward their own. The reason to come together is not only based on ethnicity. It could be ideology and common sense. Who is really responsible for this whole mess? With few exceptions, most of you are out of line. God save us all….

My opinion, at least three of the them pled “guilty” and will be serving their time…which means no trail by jury…which saves tax payers money…because the judge will pass how long of sentence each person will serve in prison.
They made a bad choice and will have to do the time.
WE must all understand that the United States of America is a country with much diversity…history…we must learn to work together for a better community…world.
Vocabulary words:
Immigrants means “to come from another country.”
Alien means “ET…from another planet.”

To Jim Cologne:
“Nair Zuleima Alvarez, pictured bottom center, may be married to someone with a Spanish surname, but “Nair Zuleima” is Arabic.”
That was a real educated comment…
Perhaps Nair Zuleima sounds arabic to you, but it is commonly used by hispanic families without necessarily having anything to do with Arabs. I don’t know what you were trying to infer here. So what, arabs and hispanics are scheming to take over the world?

Thank you all for the entertaining comments. The ignorance displayed by some of you is both commical and disheartening. Just because a person involved in a crime is of a certain ethnic background does not automatically make an arguement for tougher immigratin laws. I am of hispanic origin but am absolutley 100% american. Dont speak or understand spanish and probably never will. I grew up on the “wrong side” of town but never was involved with criminal activity. It’s the individual.. not the ethnicity.. that determines his or her path in life. So stop the ignorance and the assumtions people… We have plenty of material for Jerry Springer type shows as it is.

I came upon this blog accidently and have to say that I am dismayed at the negativity of the comments. No one stay on task of the issue but basically pointed fingers. Could it be that the time spent typing negative thoughts could have been better spent creatively thinking of ways to make society and humanity better?

Wow This is turned out to be a racial thing! It really is’nt important if they were hispanic or whatever. I think its more important to get to the bottom of this and figure out who’ s information was taken and what TJX intends to do about it. I cant even understand how for 18 months this hidden software went undetected . What were the Techs doing??

Posted by: Dave | March 30, 2007, 3:45 pm 3:45 pm

I was one of their victims. I got a message from my bank that my information was compromised as a result of this thing. I had to wait 10 days to have my debit card replaced. It was a big hassle.

It does not matter what race they are. What matters is they broke the lawy. TJ Max IT department should have been aware of what was going on and could have done more than what they apparently did to prevent the 45.7 million credit cards from being stolen. As for what Gaby said about most henious crimes being committed in this country for example pedophiles being southern white men. Let’s take another look at that. I am from the south and I see every single day many pedophiles who live on the west coast, mid west, east coast and up north. Putting that kind of statistic on southern white men is being just as racist as one saying that because these people, who look of hispanic descent are illegals. I am not in any way defending them or saying what they did was right because it wasn’t. All I am saying is the reason our country is like it is today is because people still seem to be stuck with the same 1950-1960′s way of thinking when it comes to color. GROW UP PEOPLE!! What they did was wrong and they should be punished for their crime and america should stop judging people by the color of their skin or what race they are.

Ok, once and for all, Mexicans, Chicanos, Latinos whatever the title are not ALIENS ! They are not from outer space! AND Hispanic is the worst as this stupid word was given to Spanish people by the white government. They don’t have space ships, they didn’t arrive in space ships nor do they have antennas sticking out of their heads! Why aren’t Cubans, those from Haiti and from Europe called aliens ? I am so so sick of Spanish people from Mexico being called ALIENS ! They come here to America to have a good life just as those from India, Asia and other countries to make have a good life and make money and have freedom from poverty and to have their children get the best education that America has to offer. Why is it different or bad for Latinos to want to come here for a good life and ok for those from India, etc coming here and bringing their families over to work in the stores, gas stations, and Subway shops they all own and who’s to say that anyone of their
family members brought here are illegals too and enjoying the good life here in America and making bookoo bucks off of us? If these folks are “illegals”, they’re smart and stupid. Can’t wait to see where they come from….

It is apparent the ring of thieves was all of hispanic descent. Any chance any of these find upstanding individuals were also illegal aliens?
They could clean cut members of MS 13! MS 13 changed no visible identifying tattoos.

Maybe they are illegal or not.. Why does it always have to be about race?? Black, white, Asian, Indian, It doesn’t matter.. yes, they did something wrong but u can’t judge them.. Americans already make it hard enough on hipanics.. Some are here to work make some money and go back to there family’s.. Don’t look at us all they same.. I’m not saying that what they did was right.. They just made a bad choice and have to pay the consequence..

Posted by: Andrea | March 30, 2007, 4:01 pm 4:01 pm

My, my, my! The point here is that a crime was committed-against possibly 45,000 million people-do you all get that? 45 MILLION! It would be safe to assume that more than just caucasions were targeted. If they are illegal, that is besides the point. Whatever role they played it will be determined under our democratic court system and they will be judged. I must say, however, if after they have gone through our judicial system and have paid their price to the US society for their crimes-if they are in fact illegal-DEPORT THEM!

The omission of the suspects’ immigration status in stories like this is obvious censorship that should remind Americans of similar controls dictated by communist nations. It is a powerful lobby that has vested interest in increasing the population at any cost; to keep the pressure on for the demand for goods & housing subsidized by government & corporate welfare on the backs of a burdened & disparaged middle class.

I’m cuban and I’m ashamed of the way other hispanic discriminate..

It’s amazing to me, the amount of ugliness that can come out of people’s mouths when they are sitting behind the anonymity of their computer screen. I put my last name and my email here. It is horrible that ANYONE would steal identities, and yet it happens everyday. Why would it matter if the person responsible was Hispanic, White, Purple or Green? I don’t care what color they are, I don’t want them out and about doing harm to anyone. Oh and by the way, my mother is English, father is Hispanic…so I get to play both sides of the fields.

What does it matter what race they are? They broke the law and should be punished for that. To all those who posted the racist comments – Remember we are all descended from immigrants – most would be considered illegal as they came over before immigration laws were set.

People:
We can’t assume anything about anyone just by their appearances or surnames. For all you know, they could all have been born in the US, which would make them legal, legitimate US citizens. The only thing we know for sure about these six people is that they are criminals. Ethnicity and immigration aren’t the issues here. The issue here is that identity theft has become a huge problem and that the busting of this theft ring is just the teeny, tiny tip of the proverbial iceberg.
P.S. Think you know what a “Hispanic” looks like? Alexis Bledel (Gilmore Girls)and Fergie (from the Black Eyed Peas, whose real name is Stacy Ferguson) are both beautiful women, but would you know just by looks that both of them are of Mexican origin ? Just goes to show, don’t assume you know someone, you could be in for a surpise.

I can’t believe how many ignorant people are out there. The point of this story is that 45 million people potentially had their identites stolen. I am sure that the media would have jumped on it if any of these people were in the country illegally! The fact remains that TJX new this was happening and they did nothing to warn their customers….sounds like the kind of company I want to do business with!

April: There must be something wrong with me because Miami (and the the entire state of Florida) is the LAST place I’d want to live. As for the people who can afford to live in Miami, how many are receiving government assistance?

Tougher immigration laws NOW! Background checks, waiting periods, probation periods, the whole 9. Harworking, upstanding US citizens are tired of being ripped off and scammed by these low life nothings who shouldn’t be here to begin with. When is America going to take a stand and cleanse our streets of this nonsense!? Gangbangers, hustlers, pimps, scammers, dealers, and anyone who isn’t here legally…don’t let the door hit you on the way out.

Posted by: Mike Roch | March 30, 2007, 4:17 pm 4:17 pm

First of all, a Spanish surname does not mean a person is an immigrant nor illegal, for that matter. My grandparents, my parents, and I were born in the US and have Spanish surnames. In case you didn’t notice, your surname is probably not American. In fact, what makes an American last name? The last time I looked around, the last names of everyone I know were carried over from England, Ireland, Scotland, Brazil, China, India, and many others. Stereotyping a person because of the color of their skin, their last name, or their origin reveals more about your own insecurities and lack of humanity than it does about their shortcomings. If these people are criminals, then convict them as thieves. Leave their ethnicities and citizenship status out of it.

Wow – a lot of real emotions out there. I have but one question for the U.S. government; why have we not built a wall on our Northern and Southern borders ? There is no doubt that we have been, and continue to be invaded, drugs and all.
Thank you Mr. Bush, for our “security !”

‘Fact is, hispanics are the fastest growing group in the US. That’s birth rate, not illegal immigration. White people are becoming a less important demographic entity every year. America will be smarter and better looking with a hispanic majority, and the food much tastier, too. Enjoy your apple pie, it could be the last slice you ever have.’
TO ‘BIFF’ the author of above- you crack me up- hispanics are ‘smarter’ and whites becoming ‘less important’….? that is the funniest most delusional thing I have heard in years….

Posted by: carlacalifornia | April 3, 2007, 2:42 pm 2:42 pm

I don’t even want to comment on all the Hispanic references I have been reading..it’s not even worth the comment.
If you read the article, it states that the people who were arrested are not the “masterminds” who hacked into the TJX Corporation computer system, they just the recipients of the card information.
I have stated before, I work in a financial institution that was hit pretty hard by this compromise. Fradulent activity has also taken place in New York, New Jersey, Texas, and some other states as a result of this compromise. The difference is these people were caught red handed. I’m sure there is going to be more to come as the investigation continues. Remember, this happened over a period of a year and a half.
And the TJX Corporation is not the only merchant that has had large compromises over the last few years. BJ’s Wholesale Warehouse, DSW Shoe Warehouse, for example, had compromises a few years ago. This is becoming a trend.
The smart thing to do is to be vigilant about checking your account and to report any suspicious activity on your account immediately to your financial institution and law enforcement.
Until merchants are going to be held responsible for the type of information they store in their computer systems, then this is not going to stop.

So many comments on both sides of the illegal/legal issue – so many wrong.
It is an issue whether they were illegals. It’s not the only issue, but it is an issue. It’s a crime that TJ Maxx’s security was lax and somebody stole the data. Sure. It is ALSO a crime that people got a hold of that data, like these 6, and used it to steal goods and services. Two crimes. Two different sets of people.
If these 6 are illegal, it darn well is important. As so many of you have pointed out, we have enough trouble controlling crime among legal citizens. The last thing we need is a lax immigration policy that lets deadbeats and freeloaders into the country, fails to keep track of them, and fails to catch them when they commit crime.
Ready for the politically incorrect truth?
Yes, you damn well can tell if someone is hispanic by looking at them. That doesn’t mean you can tell ALL hispanics by looking at them. But the ones that carry distinctive physical appearance traits, you darn well can tell. And these 6 have them. This isn’t a crime. It isn’t racist. They have a different appearance from whites, and you can tell. That’s all there is to it.
Yes, I would say just by looking at these 6, they are not the ones who hacked the networks. They look either too young, too clueless, or too stupid to have done it. Think that’s a snapshot assumption based on appearance? Well, how ’bout that. I bet I’m right, though.
It doesn’t surprise me at all that they are all Hispanic, being that this occurred in south Florida. Good God. South Florida is being taken over by Hispanic immigrants, legal or not. So this should come as no surprise to anyone.
