White House Aides Tried to Hide E-mails, Lawmaker Charges
White House staff are using non-governmental e-mail addresses to avoid leaving a paper trail of their communications, a senior congressman charged Monday. In a pair of letters Monday, House Oversight and Investigations Committee Chairman Henry A. Waxman, D.-Calif., asked the Republican National Committee and the Bush-Cheney ’04 Campaign to preserve e-mails sent and received by White House officials using domains controlled by the two groups. Waxman also asked the two to meet with his staff to explain how they handle e-mail accounts for government officials. "Such e-mails written in the conduct of White House business would appear to be governmental records subject to preservation and eventual public disclosure," Waxman wrote. The use of e-mail addresses from domains like "gwb43.com" by White House aides surfaced in the news earlier this month when the Justice Department released hundreds of e-mails between political appointees discussing the firing of several U.S. attorneys. E-mails from Scott Jennings, a deputy to White House political adviser Karl Rove, came from an address featuring the gwb43.com domain. Click Here for Full Blotter Coverage. But Waxman also pointed to e-mails his committee received last year in connection to convicted superlobbyist Jack Abramoff, which show White House aides sending and receiving work-related e-mails from domains like "georgewbush.com" and "rnchq.org". E-mail conversations uncovered by Waxman’s investigators suggest that some White House staff and outsiders believed such e-mail, which evaded official ".gov" systems, could be kept private. "…[I]t is better not to put this stuff in writing in their e-mail system because it might actually limit what they can do to help us," one lobbyist wrote Abramoff, citing advice from a White House aide, "especially since there could be lawsuits, etc." An RNC spokesman declined to comment, saying the organization had not yet had a chance to review the letter. The White House and former Bush-Cheney ’04 campaign chairman Marc Racicot did not immediately respond to requests for comment. See the e-mails in question.

You’re still kicking butt at your new digs, Mr. Rood! Keep up the good work.

They’ve outed a CIA agent already.
Could someone in the White House let out those Nuke codes via the “private” email system. Or who knows what else?
Seems to me that this affects National Security at the highest levels.
Has the government been completely privatized and we just haven’t been told yet?
What I really want to know is why Karl Rove’s security clearance hasn’t been pulled yet.

This is important. Use of “outside” email accounts by administration officials for governmental business could be an effort to evade recordkeeping and Freedom of Access requirements and a way to hide behavior and communications from proper scrutiny. We pay their salaries — they work for us, not for any political party.

I was hoping this would see mainstream press. Thank you to both Sen. Waxman and Mr.Ross for forcing the TRUTH to keep coming out.

It’s interesting at just how much dirt (such as this latest reveal about the use of outside – and untracable? – e-mail accounts) has been unearthed in such a brief period of time with so little help from the Bush Administration. What more might be lurking just around the corner?

Question– was anything sensitive/secret sent via public email servers? What is the White House policy on this from a security standpoint? If nothing else, external emails could be spoofed easily… I’m curious if this circumvents national security policies.

“Please wake up people…..IT’S HAPPENING IN BOTH PARTIES! GEESH!”
What’s happening in both parties? Offenses for which people can be prosecuted or playing games with e-mail? If the former, prosecute them. If the latter, collect the e-mail. Simple.

There is NO reason to use outside email addresses other than to avoid leaving a paper trail.
Even a five year old can figure this stuff out.
And regarding Christine’s point that “both parties lie”. First, no duh. Second, that’s irrelevent – unless you are therefore saying that lying and corruption is no big deal and we should therefore just ignore it. Good message to send to children.

Easy on the caps Christie baby!! All the crooks seem to be in one party now, and you seem to be in denial. The question is whether you love your country more than your party. There is a large rats nest in the white house. Do you want to clean it up or keep on trying to cover it up.

These Republicans must need to shower on the half hour.
More mouse droppings leading to the white house stairs. The piles are mega size and growing by the day. Both those Democrats can really DO “oversight”!

We are subject to warrantless wiretapping while they protect themselves with outside emails. Don’t you love the elitism?

“but, but, but….both parties are doing it”, is like blaming Clinton for Iraq. These Repubs are guilty of treason (outing a CIA operative), lying to the public, obstruction of justice, conspirasy, flat out stealing and on and on and on…..
Impeach Bush and Cheney and Gonzales NOW.

Since we now know that much of the previously subpoenaed information was kept secret on the GOP.com domain, there needs to be a blanket subpoena against ALL of GOP.com’s email archives.

“Can we get Robin Williams to run for president.”
Why not Ann Coulter?! She seems to think she knows EVERTHING there is to know about running our country.
