Top Al Qaeda Leader Captured

A top al Qaeda leader has been detained and captured, the Pentagon announced this morning.  Abd al-Hadi al-Iraqi is described as al Qaeda’s top operational planner in Afghanistan.  He was also reportedly planning an assassination attempt on Pakistan’s President Pervez Musharraf. Officials say he was responsible for several attempted assassinations, including previous attempts on the life of Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf and cross-border attacks on coalition forces in Afghanistan. He has long-standing ties to the Taliban that go back to the 1990s and acted as a liaison between al Qaeda and the Taliban. Abd al-Hadi al-Iraqi was captured by the CIA as he was attempting to travel back to his native country, Iraq.  He was going to Iraq, officials say, to "manage" al Qaeda’s operations, including plots on Western interests outside of Iraq. He was captured by the CIA in late 2006 and held at a secret CIA detention facility until this week, when he was transferred to Gitmo and Department of Defense custody.  Click Here for Full Blotter Coverage. During his time with the CIA, Abd al-Hadi al-Iraqi was interrogated and revealed useful information about al Qaeda plots, which, officials say, have been disrupted as a result.  Abd al-Hadi al-Iraqi had met with al Qaeda members in Iran, officials also said.

Unfortunately, Al Qaeda is very much like Medusa. Many snakes growing out of the head and every time you cut one snake’s head off, another grows in to take it’s place. The only way to really stop them is for the entire world to join together, give them no place to hide and cut off the entire head all at one time. As long as they can buy sanctuary anyplace on earth, they will continue to attack.

Of course you all know before the elections. We will have or find a dead Bin Laden, right??

This guy was caught in “late 2006″. He apparently gave up lots of good info. But still there have been more attacks, and more violence in Iraq and Afghanistan. Nice to get any Al Qaeda terrorists. But this isn’t stopping the violence. Hard to fight a war on terrorism when our leader in this fight did everything he could to avoid actual military combat in a real war. Our leader flew sorties safely here in mainland USA.

Why would they buy santuary all they have to do is come to the US and the Dem’s will give it to them.

This is very OLD news. But it really does not matter too much, his replacement is probably already online and operating.
There are too too many operatives waiting in line for these positions.

Another # 2 or 3 in the leadership.
Those are easy to come by. The #1′s seem to be a tad more difficult.

Dave seems to think Bush’s service in the Air National Guard was weak because he was assigned to a unit in the states.
I was an Army Reservist for almost 30 years, volunteered for overseas service 3 times but timing and unit requirements didn’t result in that duty. That’s the way it goes. Does Dave think me dishonorable.
Fact is that most Air National Guard guys didn’t get moved overseas. It was a decision far above Bush. Seems to me this BS attacking Bush’s military record comes from guys who mostly didn’t do a thing themselves. Bush was serving when most weren’t.
Go on to something real.

really? steph? you think the news media had the info the cia had someone in 2006 and didnt report until now? really? some people are very ignorant. maybe, just maybe the agencies just put out the info now, since any info recieved would have been null and void had they known this guy was alive, who cares about rep or dems, you people all think you are right, some are right and some are wrong. deal with it.

Has the timing of this announcement by the White House, have anything to do with the fact the Senate and Congress have passed a bill starting the withdrawal of US troops by 1st October?

Posted by: Chris | April 27, 2007, 12:04 pm 12:04 pm

Bill – you stated “Hard to fight a war on terrorism when our leader in this fight did everything he could to avoid actual military combat in a real war. Our leader flew sorties safely here in mainland USA.” How are these words AT ALL relevent to this story??? Just more bleeding-heart-liberlist BS…don’t be bitter, reconsider.

Al Qaeda’s days are numbered. It will be just a matter of time before they are all defeated, sure there will be small cells around the world but nothing like it used to be, kinda like the fools in the “KKK”. I guess the terrorists now have to resort to poisoning our pets b/c that’s the best they can do!

Posted by: GWBush | April 27, 2007, 12:08 pm 12:08 pm

Good counterpoint to the cowardly Democrat “surrender now” election plank. Al Queda is out to kill us and we are engaging them, pursing them and capturing them. (I’d just as soon we killed them as soon as we got what we can out of them as they are ruined and unrecoverable human beings.) To me, surrender is not an acceptable choice. Its them or us.

I cannot believe how many illiterate people there are in this country. How can anyone take these comments seriously when you can’t even express yourself correctly? Whomever it was that said “the dumbing down of America” hit the nail squarely on the head. Sometimes I am ashamed to call myself an American.

Posted by: Albert | April 27, 2007, 12:11 pm 12:11 pm

It’s good that this report was delayed in getting out to the public. Otherwise, the Democrats and the ACLU would have been yelling because this guy was denied silk pajamas and a soft bed and nobody would have gotten any worthwhile information out of him. Let our Intelligence Community and our Military do their job. That’s what we pay them for. War is not a pretty thing and never has been. But you don’t handle depraved killers with kid gloves. Treat these people like normal human beings and they’ll slit your throat the first time you turn your back on them.

Posted by: Russ | April 27, 2007, 12:11 pm 12:11 pm

Hard to fight terrorists with the Liberal Socialist Democrat’s telling them the “War Is Lost” and “We Surrender, You Win”, message. Why do Liberal Socialist Democrats hate our military I will never know. A real mystery.

Posted by: Pedro | April 27, 2007, 12:15 pm 12:15 pm

I’m betting as the election gets closer we will see more and more “top Al Qaeda leader” announcements of capture. This administration will politically drag victories into the news as needed to remain in power. The Bush administration has stuck our sons and daughters in the middle of someone else’s civil war and the American people are not happy about it.

Posted by: dan | April 27, 2007, 12:16 pm 12:16 pm

“He was captured by the CIA in late 2006″ So if this is the case then why is it so bad right now? Republicans will be riding this one high. We lied about Pat but hay we got this guy, what have the dems done?
Open your eyes people, troops are still being killed, this does not matter at all.

Posted by: Lee | April 27, 2007, 12:16 pm 12:16 pm

This comes as great news that we captured another Cell leader. The reason we are just now releasing this information, is because we have gotten all that we can out of this guy and we did not want to tip off the terrorists and ruin their “attempted plots”. The comment about our President flying sorties in the mainland is retarded. Apples and oranges. He is doing much more to combat terrorism than any Democrat would. They want tuck tail and retreat like in Vietnam.

Posted by: Forrest | April 27, 2007, 12:17 pm 12:17 pm

This is good news. I don’t understand why some people use this good news as a platform to attack Democrats, though. Hopefully they will get Bin Laden soon, also.

Posted by: barry Markaverich | April 27, 2007, 12:31 pm 12:31 pm

My response to Chris is “Probably not.” The bill up for approval is to withdraw substantial amounts of COMBAT troops. The US military won’t disappear from Iraq anytime soon, and neither will intel forces.
And Bill, it’s been posted already, but what does anybody’s combat military service (or lack thereof) have ANYTHING to do with their ability to execute public policy?

Posted by: Jazz | April 27, 2007, 12:37 pm 12:37 pm

Intersting timing, just when GW is about to veto the Dems withdrawl bill.
Wonder if they did the waterboard torture in that secret prison?
And if anybody really thinks that this is the beginning of the end to terrorism, think again. We got rid of Saddam and that hasn’t stopped anything. The result was actually increased terrorist attacks.
Iraq is a civil war and staying in Iraq for however long isn’t going to change the face of terrorism or the civil war. As long as there are fanatics in this world, as long as there are people who want control or countries, as long as there are political extremist, terroism is not going away.

Posted by: Kate | April 27, 2007, 12:41 pm 12:41 pm

somehow, i KNEW those sneaky republicans were going to pull some al-quaeda operative out of their ears to justify the inevitable bush veto of this withdrawal resolution. they’ve probably had this guy hanging out in tahiti, waiting for a cell phone call from cheney for months, if not years now. they called him in for backup! how transparent. the american public, for the most part, is NOT dumber than our president!

Posted by: allen | April 27, 2007, 12:59 pm 12:59 pm

Leaving Iraq has nothing to do with the “cutting and running” slogan Republicans like to throw out when ever they are loosing an argument. Our kids are dying trying to keep the peace in a country intent on destroying itself. The only thing that will stop this war is the people in the REGION saying enough is enough. The countries SURROUNDING IRAQ can stop it. We are only being used as an excuse by extremist religious leaders to recruit other parents kids into killing themselves and ours. As long as we are there and the region allows it to happen, this war will be never ending. There are people all over the world that believe we have handled this wrong. As much as I love this country (and yes, Democrats love this country too) we need to admit our mistake and correct it. Capture as many Al Qaeda as we can but get out of Iraq. Maybe other contries will start helping us instead of enabling them.

Posted by: dan | April 27, 2007, 1:03 pm 1:03 pm

It’s always good news when a terrorist is stopped, but it was not the GOP that caught him. It was the CIA working on behalf of all Americans. Also with regard to W’S military service lets not forget that this brave man is the first president in American history to go AWOL and amazingly his records disappeared. Wow what a guy…

Dave,
Can we please stop with the never ending jabs at our President by smearing his service to his country?
If you’ve never earned your Private Pilot License, Instrument rating, Commercial and ATP tickets plus a JET rating, downplaying W’s accomplishments by besmirching his service to his country is disingenuous and one can argue, un-American. I’m a fighter pilot and let me tell ya, earning your wings is no small feat!
Capturing this scum bag is great news for the country and the world. I have flown many missions over Iraq, in both wars, PLUS, the No-Fly Zones, hence I know what I’m talking about! The world’s intelligence communities were unanimous in their analysis that Sadaam had weapons of mass destruction. Additionally, he violated 17 UN resolutions after we killed his army in DESSERT STORM. This was more than enough transgressions for us to whack his now dead ass at any time we wanted to.
May I ask those here on this message board to do us in the military a HUGE favor? Please stop with the rants that W lied, that this war is being fought over oil, etc., etc. My team mates and I are eliminating those who have sworn to kill us where ever they may be. I have seen them up close and personal, and the threat is real! The never ending rhetoric back here is only giving these scum bags a bigger head! Now, I don’t mind that, it makes for an easier target, but it truly does embolden them!
Thanks.

I agree we are handling this situation wrong. It all started when we pulled out of Beirut. We should have retaliated heavily and swiftly then and we wouldnt be where we are now. Shock and Aww should have began back then.
We are only where we are not because we have tolerated it for so long. Our policy of keeping the wolves at Bay has failed it is not time to kill the wolves.
And Bob if you are asamed of being Ameircan I am sure it is just as easy to sneak out of our border as it is in.

Capturing terrorists = good.
Nation building = bad.
The two aren’t mutually exclusive.
That’s why America needs to get out of Iraq.

Posted by: Erik | April 27, 2007, 1:21 pm 1:21 pm

Sheep Dog, Sir. For you and your team, we have nothing but respect for what you do for us. There are people in this country that believe that we have been lead down the wrong path and our constitution allows us to express these thoughts and ideas. There is no doubt the Taliban must be stopped. The argument is over HOW to remove the threat, not if we should remove it.

Posted by: dan | April 27, 2007, 1:34 pm 1:34 pm

Each one of us has opinions about what should happen in the Middle East. The Republicans say “stay the course” and the Democrats say “get out”. History will determine if either is correct, or neither! I want to be able to walk down our streets in America feeling safe from those who would do me harm. I’m sure that the people in Iraq, Afganistan, and the rest of the world feel the same way. How will that be accomplished? In my opinion it will be accomplished when the hate-mongers are gone…when everyone can live at peace with everyone else. This would indeed be a utopia, wouldn’t it? Sadly, if that time exists it will be a long time in the future.

Posted by: Dick Griffith | April 27, 2007, 1:35 pm 1:35 pm

Sheep Dog, your service is admirable, but you don’t fight for freedom abroad so that you can squash all dissent here at home. As a soldier for the United States of America, you don’t get to ask for an abstention to criticism of the President.

Thank You Brian for all your service. I am a father of 6 daughters and now a grandfather of 16. I missed the opportunity to serve for my country as you are. I believe that I have this big family and all our freedoms because of you and the others like you. Thanks for going over there and not waiting until the enemy gets over here as the some would have it. God richly bless you guys in the military. Whatever happened to patriotism?

Posted by: Kirby | April 27, 2007, 2:11 pm 2:11 pm

Kirby, your comments are right on. Those who serve in the Military, in any capacity, should be appreciated and supported. Like so many others, I served in the Military at a time when there was no war to fight. However, my decision to enlist was made with the realization that, should it be necessary, I would fight for my country. George W. Bush served in the same capacity as so many of us. The fact that he did not have to actually go to war does not in any way diminish the fact that he served his country honorably. And he still does!!! Those of us who DO believe in Patriotism should speak louder and longer than those who want to freeload on the freedom they have been guaranteed by others.

It is possible to support the troops and still condemn the policies that command them to do less than noble or moral things with no free will to refuse to do them.
Most of us support our people in uniform. But can not support the acts they have no choice but to carry out.

Posted by: Zach | April 27, 2007, 6:05 pm 6:05 pm

Zach, what our troops are doing IS Noble and Moral. If the US quits in the Middle East and doesn’t finish the job, those people will be bombing OUR Market Places and planting IED’s under YOUR street. How many times do they have to attack us before people realize they REALLY want to destroy us, our way of life and everything FREEDOM stands for?

Posted by: Russ | April 27, 2007, 6:34 pm 6:34 pm

How is that a bunch of guys sitting in a cave are able to outhink all our political and military leaders. All you guys that keep thinking the liberals hate the military aren’t paying attention. The repubs are the ones who keep sending guys into wars without equipment. Also, if you’re going to war then go to war. Every servicemen should be involved in creating a peaceful Afghanistan and Iraq. Every base in the US and the world should be shipped out except training bases.
If this is really a war then where is the declaration of war by congress, I think that’s in that little piece of paper we are all so proud of fthat refers to the constitution which I know Bush has never read and couldn’t understand unless it was in a comic strip.

Russ, with all due respect, look around. Our “way of life and everything freedom stands for” has been altered almost beyond recognition. This, thanks to every assault that has been made on the constitution in the name of security.
And how many times do we have to attack some place in the middle east before they also come to the realization, in fact or perception, that we want to destroy them.
Please remember, Iraq was not a player on 9/11. And AQ was not using Iraq as a strong hold before we created the power vacuum with our destabilizing Iraq with our invasion.

nfortunately, Al Qaeda is very much like Medusa. Many snakes growing out of the head and every time you cut one snake’s head off, another grows in to take it’s place. Dear friends,
couple of comments, FOX news reported this guy being cought in 2003!
Wonder why FOX news is not even mentioning this story. This seems like a tail wagging the dog story – a 4 years old story. I think ABC and others should review this and reconsider just printing what the Pentagon/Government says….please do some reasearch. You would think with all the stories about how the media fell asleep during the pre and post war stage..people would be more critical..

I find it very difficult to believe that there is a large contingency of idiots that believe we should bring our troops home and admit defeat. What about our troops that are still in Germany and Japan? Those wars were over years ago yet we still have troops there.

Our soldiers are neither democrats or republicans just American HEROes! I thank them for all they do, but I don’t like hearing about my heroes dying or being hurt. Please just bring them home and let the Iraqis do whatever they want to themselves. Lets regroup and attack terriorism some other way. It’s funny how people don’t support the war or the steps we have to take to maintain the security of this country. I would hope that the government would want to listen to calls from the MidEast and persons suspected of being terrorists. I would hope the government would want to track the financial holdings of “charitable” groups sympathetic to suicide bombers. You libs aren’t in favor of these programs but yet you support the people who want to limit how much toilet paper we use or limit the fat grams in a McDonald hamburger. You people are out of touch.

According to a report on NPR this AM, in the 4 years since Dubbya’s “Mission Accomplished” speech, it is estimated by documented statistics that terror attacks the world over are up by approx 30% in the last year, with 65% of it taking place in Iraq and Afghanistan. Al Queda and insurgencies in Iraq, while approximated at 5000 members four years ago are estimated at 25,000 today. And Shite militia members whose numbers were estimated at 20,000 has grown to over 50,000.
So you tell me.
Does anyone really think we’re winning yet? And what are you possibly basing that on?

Posted by: Zach | May 1, 2007, 10:30 am 10:30 am

Zach: You aren’t suggesting that the US is responsible for the upsurge in terrorist attacks the world over , are you? There has always been that faction of people the world over that believed that their way was the best and set out to conquer the world. Look at Alexander the Great, Hitler, Hirohito, just to name three. We (the US) were quietly living our lives just prior to the attack on 9/11. The US didn’t start this conflict. You aren’t suggesting that we did, are you?
While it is true that terrorist attacks are up and increasing we do need to ask “Why?” The answer does not lie in the US trying to impose our way on others. We might believe that democracy is the best way of life…even though it has problems…but the US does not desire to force democracy on any. Of course, you have the right to believe that if you wish.

Posted by: Dick Griffith | May 1, 2007, 2:19 pm 2:19 pm

Hooo Boy!!! You people!!!!
To Allen and Sheepdog. The worlds intelligence services were not unanimous in the WMD claim. There was major dissent in both US and UK services, it was simply suppressed thats all. Also, if you think violating 17 UN resolutions was enough to invade Iraq, then what of Israel? Who consistently and flagrantly violate UN resolutions. You cant have it both ways
Further, The fact this guy was claiming to be Al Qaeda is pretty much proof that he was tortured, as the NSA and CIA last year admitted that people being tortured would admit to anything to make it stop. He will probably admit to stealing Xmas!
To Dick Griffith, Sitting quietly living your own lives???? I guess the US had nothing to with the Iranian revolution, Nicaraguan conflict, Support of various nasty dictatorships in South America etc… That was the boogeyman right??? Or maybe The Grinch??? Bush did indeed desire to force democracy on Iraq, or is the phrase “Regime change” new to you?

What makes you think this news is accurate, how do you he wasn’t just caught?

Posted by: graham | May 6, 2007, 12:39 am 12:39 am

Mr. Griffith:
Yes.
I most certainly am saying just that.
Look at the stats.
Pre-Iraq invasion: No AQ in Iraq.
Post Iraq invasion: AQ uses Iraq as a strong hold.
Shiite militia up from 20,000 to 50,000.
Insurgents which we’re approximated in 2003 at 5,000 are now reported to number approximately 20,000/25,000.
Terrorist attacks are up 25% since 2003, world wide with 65% of them taking place in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Four years of US occupation and these are the results.
How could any reasonable person disagree that that the US is not responsible for the “upsurge in terrorist attacks the world over”?

Zach,
You are asuming that if we had not gone into Iraq and Afganhistan that things would have been different. And that things would have been better. You cannot prove either assumption to be true.

I have heard too many government officials lies about someone being a ‘terrorist’. If this guy is a terrorist, prove it. Put him on trial, now. Let’s see if your evidence against this guy is any better than the evidence of the last 50 guys you kidnapped and accused of being terrorists.
