Edwards’ Memorial Day Backlash

ABC News’ Rick Klein Reports: Former senator John Edwards, D-N.C., is urging the public to use Memorial Day weekend to press his case on the need for an exit from Iraq, saying that war opponents should use the holiday weekend to deliver a message to President Bush that it’s time to end the war.

But the national commander of the American Legion isn’t happy about a solemn holiday being used for political purposes. In a posting on the legion’s Web site, Commander Paul A. Morin blasts Edwards’ suggestion that Americans bring anti-war signs to local Memorial Day parades, saying that Edwards "has blatantly violated the sanctity of this most special day."

"Revolting is a kind word for it," Morin writes. "It’s as inappropriate as a political bumper sticker on an Arlington headstone."

Edwards has used his full-throated opposition to the war to differentiate himself in the presidential field. Last weekend, he launched a new Web site, www.supportthetroopsendthewar.com, which advertises "10 Things You Can Do Over Memorial Weekend to Support the Troops and End the War."

The Edwards camp says the candidate is sticking by his effort to engage the public on the need for an exit from Iraq, and say their call for Memorial Day weekend activities should not read as anything that diminishes the holiday itself.

They also point out that many of the people who have left feedback at the campaign’s new Web site are veterans or family members of men and women in uniform.

An Edwards campaign aide suggested that ABC News contact a first lieutenant in the Marine Corps reserves, Jonathan Morgenstein of Arlington, Va., for an alternate point of view. "Memorial Day is there to honor those who fought and died for the right to free expression," said Morgenstein, who served in Iraq in 2004.

We honor our vets by wanting to support the troops by getting them home. Edwards is spot on.

What’s revolting is the president’s refusal to bring the troops home, even though the majority of the population in both America and Iraq is opposed to the war. I thought America was a democracy, but apparently the president has other ideas.
I am in full support of Edwards’s efforts to end the war.

The purpose of Memorial Day is to honor the fallen. I think it’s the perfect time to ask Bush to bring our troops home. Edwards is doing the right thing by asking us all to join him to call for an end to the war. Since it is Memorial Day I would like to speak out and get our troops home so he don’t have to honor any MORE fallen soldiers. Enough is enough.

What better day to remind Americans to bring our troops home before they too will be lying in a cemetery with a flag waving over their grave.
Every year I go to the cementery to honor those who have given their lives so that I may enjoy many freedoms that are denied in other countries.
IMO, this is the time to tell, show, people that this war is needless and useless and that to many American lives have been lost. We don’t need more lives lost, now is the time to speak out loudly and clearly…Bring Our Troops Home!

Why is it the wrong time? Edwards is right, we should try and get Bush to bring our honorable men and women home on the day that we honor our soldiers. Iraq is a mess and the Iraqis need to take on their own country. I’m with Edwards on this, bring them home!

The probability is that the man who doesn’t approve of Senator Edwards bold and inspiring stance on the war was one of those who was raving about how wonderful Bush was. That being said, Senator Edwards is insightful, capable and willing to say the truth and stand up for what is right. Nothing wrong with that. He has my vote!

This coming from the supporters of a President that has NEVER attended the funeral of a fallen soldier – the lives he is responsible for losing.
He’s a coward and WE’RE supposed to sit back and take it.
Nuts.

I am glad Senator Edwards is supporting our troops by trying to end the war.
Veterans and those serving want this war over.
I think some of the vocal critics are Republican diehards.

What better time to honor our troops and show our support for them than on Memorial Day?
I will be joining Senator Edwards’ call to support our troops and end the war, on Memorial Day, by sending packages to our men and women serving in Iraq and pray for their safe and speedy return.
There is no better way to support our troops, nothing more patriotic, than to bring them home from Iraq.

Memorial Day is one day when people actually confront the reality of the sacrifices made by our military men and women. It is, therefore, an entirely appropriate time to consider how we honor and respect the military in our policies – to confront the consequences of those policies with open eyes.
I have a son in the military. I have talked with other mothers with sons in the military. They agree with me and Sen. Edwards: Congress needs to stand firm with the White House to bring our troops home from Iraq.
How dare anyone attempt to suppress free speech in this country, whether that speech is photographs of coffins returning from Iraq (which makes what happened more real to those of us sheltered here in the US) or whether it is speaking out on bringing our troops home.
I applaud Sen. Edwards for looking at the circumstances surrounding our presence there, the consequences of continuing on our present path and proposing how to end this in the best way for all concerned.

I think Edwards is right, we need them home, I really think we can do both support them while they are there but yet still being active in bringing them home.
It is not an either or, we should be doing both. Honor and support!
Thankyou Senator Edwards!

My husband retired after 23 years in the Navy, turning down a promotion that would likely have gotten him a second promotion in minimal time–and taking a BIG hit in the pension dept. But he knew this war was based on lies and a desire to control Iraq’s oil—and he refused to die for Halliburton and Exxon
Support the troops. Bring them home now, so there will be no more Gold Star mothers, and no more war widows.

I am so proud of Senator Edwards for trying to end this war. Memorial Day Week-end is the perfect time to honor our fallen veterans and to bring our current ones home.

Edwards is right here. It’s time Democrats stop letting the Bush Admin hide behind the troops and the flag. Just the other day Tony Snow said that the reason why we can’t leave Iraq is the troops. I am sure they were all like:
“Awe, geez… we would really be leaving Iraq right now if it weren’t for those dang troops. Shucks!” (sarcasm)

Judging from the majority of posts, if you don’t already, maybe you should also support the war protesters at the funerals of fallen soldiers. I’m betting that you wouldn’t be so harsh as to hold a Christian protest at a Muslim event, so as not to offend, but the feelings of the people at the veterans events don’t seem to matter. Even if you are (arguably) in the majority – it is not the place.

Looks like Edwards sent his supporters to defend him. For someone who voted FOR the war, and as late as last year in a speech repeated his support, until he decided to run for President, he knew he had to come out against it.
Memorial Day is a very special day of dignity to honor our fallen soldiers and to use it to your political advantage will only make him look like an idiot and taking advantage of those who take this day as a serious event and not one to promote a political campaign. Appears like a desparate act and will backfire on him bigtime.
For someone who made his millions as a lawyer for “hedge Funds” and suing people, making medical costs go up, and building a multi-million dollar home, having a photo-op announcement in New Orleans, and never going back or doing a darn thing to help the people in New Orleans, and his $400 haircuts, he is a fake and to use this occasion to get his supporters to carry signs and disrupt events set up by Veterans Organizations to honor their fallen in ALL wars, is just plain outrageous!
And don’t make the claim Edwards is trying to end the war, that is simply uninformed. He is NOT IN CONGRESS! Has no vote, so he can spout all his promises all he wants, but in fact, unless elected, he won’t be able to do a thing. Empty promises when there are Senator’s working non-stop AND campaigning to try to push through a bill and get the votes to override Bush’s veto. Shame on Edwards for trying to tell people he is trying to stop the war, he is in absolutely no political office at this time, can enact no legislation, so exactly how is he promising to end the war now?

I wouldn’t bother worrying about John Edwards, he’s never going to be president anyway.
I am a Democrat, and even I recognize that the price tag on the programs he’s already proposed are likely to be huge.
And then there’s the fact that he’s already said several times that he’s going to raise taxes.
Make no mistake, those taxes should be raised. But the thing is, no matter how many times a candidate says “Raise taxes ON THE WEALTHY, all anyone ever hears is “I’m going to raise taxes.”
Here’s another news flash – you never say that you’re going to raise taxes before getting elected. Especially not on tape.

I honor all the men and women who have lost life and limb for this country. As I reflect upon their sacrifices, I feel compelled to let my representitives know that this war must end. John Edwards is a true patriot who honors the fallen with his call to end this war.

Members of my family are among the founders of this country and have fought in every war in our history. We remember their service and their sacrifice on Memorial Day. They would no doubt praise John Edwards’ strong call to bring our troops home from this immoral war, and would agree that Memorial Day is exactly the Day to do so. It is interesting that the Democrats in the House and Senate have finally followed John Edwards’ lead in calling an end to the war, and re-deployment of the troops by years’ end. Edwards challenged the Congress to make that demand of the President many months ago, and now they are finally doing it. That is what I call Leadership!

Sen Edwards and all the rest of you who support this coward do not understand what Memorial Day is. It is to support our fallen and pay homage to them. I will be doing so at Arlington National Cemetery honoring my husband – a Vietnam Vet. You who support Edwards must be affiliated with the group from Kansas who protest at funerals of the fallen. You also are probably some of the ones who spit in the faces of our vets returning from Vietnam. May God rest your soul if and when we are attacked again. Fort Dix didn’t prove anything to you or are you going to tell me it was a government conspiracy? Seems that is the answer to anything from cowards like you.
Remember our men & women fell giving you freedom. All Edwards gives people are trials for his “slip & slide” law practice. Perhaps you will find him chasing an ambulance that is in a Memorial Day parade. Chasing ambulances is his speciality.
God give rest to our fallen. People vote against the lawyer from North Carolina.

Why is it everytime I try to figure out a Democrat’s stupidity I walk away shaking my head with a migraine. What shame they bring to America. “O President Bush led us into an immoral war…” “…we shouldn’t be in this war…” ok let me try to follow you all on this… we are supposed to get bombed and attacked and threatened and then just sit here and take it? When we have terrorists plotting to kill our families and attatck our homeland we should sit here and say “no no! naughty boys! That’s a bad thing to do.” ok. I’m sorry. You’re right. When we find Bin Laden we’ll take your way and say “no no, bad boy” and send him back. Not even smack him on the wrist, because that might be violent! That’ll teach him by golly!! You Democrats were right! WOW! I wish I coulda thought of that… I mean why would we want to capture our enemies and put them on trail? WHOO! Darn it. All this fighting to protect our land and you were right after all! (for those who aren’t keeping up, its called sarcasm.) OOO I got an idea!!! Let’s just completely forget about immigration laws and invite the terrorists here (and have a tea party! But they don’t like the British either so that might be hard)!!! I mean the Democrats are fighting those laws too!!!
Again with the Migraines… Ok, I want the men and women home as much as the next person. I have friends over there doing more than one tour already. But I don’t want their commrades and our loved ones to have died in vain. If we leave too early everything is going to fall back to the way it was. (HA listen to me, trying to talk reason to a bunch of liberals!!! HAHAHA) But I digress. Coming from a military family, I was always taught and raised to respect and remember those who were/are in the military; past, present, and fallen. If protesting what they live and died for is YOUR way of paying respect then by all means. But that’s NOT your intention. Your intention is to stick it to Bush. Well while “sticking it to the man” (wear flowers and bell bottoms while you’re at it) you’re also sticking it to those who fought and died for YOU, you self centered *******s. What is wrong with you? Do you protest your mama too? She gave birth to you? Yes it is the same thing. They fight so you can live (she gave life to you…see the similarity? Der). If they hadn’t fought for you, you all wouldn’t be here. Think about that… (yes I used that horrible mean “T” word, no smart one not “that”…)

It always saddens me when I hear people use the Lord’s name while spewing such venom and hate. John Edwards and those of us who support him honor the fallen as well as those who loved them. We also honor those young people who have come home wounded of both body and spirit. And it pains us to see our government not honoring their promise to give them the best care they so desperately need and deserve. What better day than Memorial Day to honor our fallen, our wounded, and those who are daily in harm’s way, by speaking out on their behalf? Many of us will be lighting candles by the crosses of those fallen, sending comfort to our soldiers, and telling them how much we appreciate what they are giving. John Edwards lights candles rather than cursing the darkness. His vision for America is filled with compassionate concern for the working people that have made this country great. His comprehensive plans for universal health care, education, jobs, the environment, global warming, and yes, the War in Iraq, are clearly in the best interest of the poor and middle class, rather than those policies of George Bush and his cronies who have so weakened our country, making the rich richer and the poor poorer. And speaking of cowards, don’t you ask yourself how Bush, Cheney and all his cronies can sleep at night knowing that when it was their turn, they were the cowards, but now they don’t seem to think anything of sending these young people to Iraq over and over and over again to face the horror of this immoral war?
Whereas John Edwards has lived a life of decency, honesty and grace, who has pulled himself up out of poverty and now wants to give all Americans the opportunity to succeed too. (By the way, the best trial lawyers do not need to chase ambulances. They have so many people and other lawyers pleading with them to take their cases, and therefore take only those cases most deserving of representation. I know. Because my son is a top trial lawyer in Los Angeles. And that is the way it works. It’s a trite, bumper sticker argument to call Edwards an ambulance chaser. It’s ridiculous. As a matter of fact, you might want to take a look at the cases Edwards has championed, they speak volumes about his ethics and decency.) For those of you who are so angry, why not try lighting some candles rather than cursing the darkness? You will be a much happier person, and perhaps even add some worthwhile thoughts to the national dialogue.
