Bribe Accusations Hit Second Jefferson

Less than three weeks after U.S. Congressman William Jefferson, D-La., was indicted for bribery, his chief political strategist — and brother — is facing similar accusations. Mose Jefferson, the eldest brother and top adviser to the indicted Democratic congressman, has been accused of bribery by a former school board member for Orleans Parish, La., according to her plea agreement and sources close to the case. In a plea agreement signed Wednesday, Ellanese Brooks-Simms told federal prosecutors she took $140,000 from Mose Jefferson in exchange for supporting a big curriculum deal with her Parish reportedly worth millions to its vendor, JRL Enterprises. Photos Rep. Jefferson Indicted — See Who Else Is in Trouble Her pleading documents do not refer to Jefferson but to a "Mr. A," with whom Brooks-Simms "secretly conspired" to push for an expensive educational product "in exchange for a monetary ‘kick-back’/bribe/reward" from Mr. A. Sources close to the case confirmed to the Blotter on ABCNews.com that Mose Jefferson is "Mr. A." JRL Enterprises paid "Mr. A" more than $900,000 as a "sales commission" after the Orleans Parish School Board purchased JRL’s "I Can Learn" program, according to the factual basis of the plea signed by Brooks-Simms.  "Mr. A" "kicked back" to Brooks-Simms $140,000 of that amount, the former school board member alleges. A lawyer for Brooks-Simms, Ralph Capitelli, said he was "not in a position" to reveal the identities of the unnamed individuals in his client’s plea documents.  Efforts to contact Mose Jefferson were unsuccessful.  John Lee, president of JRL Enterprises, declined to be interviewed by ABCNews.com.  Yesterday, Lee confirmed to the New Orleans Times-Picayune he had hired Mose Jefferson to "facilitate introductions to the decision-makers here in Orleans Parish," but said that if Jefferson had bribed a school official, he would have violated his contract with JRL, which prohibited any "untoward activity." This is not the first bad news for Mose in recent weeks: the indictment against his congressman brother made public June 4 said that Mose collected thousands of dollars in lobbying fees from firms which benefited from the congressman’s actions, but he was not charged in connection to the matter. Rep. Jefferson has pleaded not guilty to the 16 federal bribery and racketeering charges against him. Do you have a tip for Brian Ross and the Investigative Team?

Take a look at some of his congressional colleagues, He could not have done half of what he is accused of without help.

Dr Know knows not. Mr Jefferson will get everything he deserves. This is not an investigation with the end game being ‘probation’.

I’m a left coast liberal. I think both these guys need to treated the small as any other American accused of a crime. Bipartition corruption is undermining any remaining faith in our government. We should take some personal responsibility too. We are letting politicians, under the guise of free speak purchase our votes. We are too darn lazy to shut off the television and read what politicians stand for. We don’t read, listen or watch opposing views. We are blessed with the elected officials the majority of us voted for. I’m a confessed leftest. I want to see Feinstein investigated. She seems to have voted in a manner that helped her husband’s economic interests. See the difference between a liberal and a conservative. My values aren’t red or blue.

Unfortunately, we need to clean out the whole Congress and Senate. They are entrenched and need a new life. They are no longer there for us but for themselves. Our founding fathers would be amazed at who we have elected over the years and we keep doing it – it’s just easier to vote for some name you recognize than to read up on who else is running. Shame on us!!!

A corrupt politician is a corrupt politician. Democrat or Republican, they should go to jail for their crimes. I’m relatively conservative, but I agree with Michael Johnson’s post. We lazy Americans need to turn off the TV and pay attention to who’s running our country and what is happening. In the end, I think we’ll be surprised to find out that is doesn’t matter whether you lean left or right or are stuck in the middle, we agree on a lot more things, especially the things that made this country the best in the world, than what we disagree on.

m. johnson, you are very correct. the career politician who has been electednumerous times because he has money and “friends” in high places, has NO feeling or loyalty to his constituents. there must be term limits established OR the whole political system will fail. there is no chance for anyone to break into the political system except to “play ball” with the established pols. if term limits are good enough for the president, it should be good enough for conrgess.

O lordy where do I start I dont know what party I amn for but I do know that if stuff like this is going on in congress we as americans need to rethink how we do things and start getting full background checks from every politician that runs wouldnt you all agree ?

Like any other Democrat I will wait until the facts are brought out in a court of law and see what is determined. I honestly think Jefferson may be found innocent. Why has it taken so long since they found the frozen money to bring charges? Something seems odd. However if Jefferson is found guilty then off he goes to prison with all the republican crooks.

I live the nightmare Jefferson and his crooked kingdom have left. Hopefully, there will be more investigations done on Renee Gill Pratt, former N. O. city council person and Mose Jefferson’s longtime girlfriend. She gave Mose’s organization an SUV that was donated to the City after Katrina. Further, she had overpriced, underused city paid for office space that she rented from Mose Jefferson.
It will be interesting to see who else falls under the Jefferson corruption machine. After all, Nagin was supported by Jefferson’s camp, Marc Morial’s cronies are going down and singing all the way down. I expect sooner or later his dirty deeds will be exposed and his aZZ will be put in jail.
I can’t wait because for too many years, we had to provide the school with basic stuff like xerox paper, toilet paper, chalk, and other supplies that teachers should have. All the while, there were unairconditioned schools with too little maintenance being done. Have you ever been to New Orleans when the weather is 90 degrees and there is not a fan available to circulate the air???? It is hard to stay awake, let alone learn.
Yes, Jefferson and his gang need to be put under hell so we all can poop on them, as they deserve.

I agree with several of the posters here. This is not a Democrat or Republican thing. Both sides got their hands out. And, both sides benefit from an adversarial relationship with the other. To me, they are like a couple hookers, on either side of the street, pointing at each other and yelling “whore”

It is nothing new. Since the dawn of the Western Civilization all politicians have been corrupt and the drug of choice is always power and money. Of course, there are different levels of corruption ranging from tell lies to the people to getting caught with their hands in the cookie jar. Political corruption knows no colors or party affiliations. Political corruption is like “fire ants”, you can try to control them but you will never get rid of them.
Here are some thoughts to put some controls back in our government. (a). Term Limits – eights years max, no more career politicians. (b). Voting accountability in congress – no more “pork”. We have the technology for each congressman to vote “line item” in a bill. (c). Mandatory ten years sentence added to the sentence of any convicted “elected” official. Rigid, non-negotiable, no judge’s discretion, must serve the full term for betraying the people’s trust. Anybody for tweny years?
