Covering Paris Hilton
Los Angeles-based producer Arash Ghadishah blogs:
You couldn’t help but feel for Paris Hilton today. The hotel heiress was seemingly caught in a power struggle between a Los Angeles judge and sheriff over how she should serve a sentence for driving on a suspended license. The judge’s ruling won out and Hilton was remanded back into a Los Angeles prison.
Hilton endured a roller coaster ride to a circus environment this morning. She was ordered back to court just one day after being released from a detention facility. The heiress was reassigned to house arrest by the LA Sheriff’s department after serving just a couple of days of her forty five day sentence. The move ran afoul of an order by superior court judge Michael Sauer who specifically ordered that Hilton should serve her entire sentence in jail. Late yesterday Sauer ordered Hilton and a Sheriff’s representative to appear for today’s hearing on the matter.
ABC News was told by the court’s public information office early today that Hilton would be permitted to appear this morning from her home by phone. But once again, Judge Sauer was having none of it, and ordered the Sheriff’s department to pick up Hilton.
In and out of prison, and potentially in, then out, then back in again to court, Hilton’s has been on an unpredictable ride. The drama over where Hilton would appear and how she would arrive only added to the media storm forming around her story. News choppers and reporters descended on her home, and a crush of cameras greeted her in the court.
Inside the courtroom more than fifty reporters watched as she fought back tears throughout the proceeding. Hilton was shaking at times and clearly distraught as attorneys and judge Sauer discussed her mental state.
Though prosecutors said that Hilton should be treated like any other defendant, the judge could not refrain from repeatedly discussing in open court the excessive media coverage of the event. He even used the proceeding to express his displeasure over one celebrity news outlet’s characterization of him as "irate."
Judge Sauer was most upset by the Sheriff, who had reassigned Hilton to home confinement against his orders, and without filing any motion on the matter with court. It was Hilton who paid the price. The judge ordered that she return immediately to prison. With that news, Hilton broke down, screaming and crying for her mother as she was helped from the courtroom and back to jail.

The judge was pushed into a corner by manipulative attorney’s and a sheriff.
Paris, is wise and savvy to acting. The tears, and all were an act.
The girl went into DT’s from some drug or even alcohol….every medical professional will tell you 72 hours after being withdrawn from the drug, you go into withdrawal.
The sheriff let her out to go home to get the drug/alcohol fix. Bottom line no one else but this celebrity would be given this treatment.
Thank goodness the judge stood up for the legal justice system of this country. The sheriff should be reprimanded to the fullest extent of the law for blatantly slapping a judge’s order! He failed to uphold the law.
And Paris needs to do her time!

There’s finally justice in America. Rich and famous people can’t just do what they want. I think she needs to pay for her stupidity. She makes pretty girls look stupid, and trust me, pretty girls are smart! If she wasn’t send back to jail, I don’t think America has any form of justice anymore. By the way, I wonder if I can get by with using the excuse “I didn’t know my license was suspended…”

The girl with all ,is finally going to be schooled on what THE REAL LIFE is about ,she is not going to have any break down in fact she will most likley become, maybe some one we might just like, instead of the joke she has been. So just COWGIRL-UP and ride the ride and just learn to say more then THATS HOT ! it is so lame! Please stop wasting your poor grandfathers money and stop running the Hilton name to a not so great name, the man I am sure who started all the money rollin 4 u all to just spend spend deserves better You think on it Paris

I am so glad that Paris Hilton is back in jail where she belongs! I hope she stays in her original cell, not in the “medical center” where she is now, until she completes her sentence of 45 days. DUI is a very serious offense after all!
This proves there is justice in this life for both the rich and famous as well as the poor and struggling!
I wonder if her parents should keep her company while incarcerated, considering they are partly to blame for her atrocious behaviour.
Hurray for Judge Sauer!!! May his tribe increase.

what i see is the kids are sheltered by there parents and body guards and when they go out out on the town without their shelters they dont know how to act so please talk to kids and give them a heads up about life and what can happen to you if drink to much you can become addicted and please dont drink and drive or offer them a driver and there are laws even for the rich and famous

I would have had more respect for paris if she had served her time like Martha Stewart did. But then 23 days out of the life of Paris must be REALLY hard to deal with; I believe her tears and crying out for her mother is nothing more than “Paris not being in control of the situation”. She certainly doesn’t like being told what to do.
Kudos to Judge Sauer.

I just watched the commentary by defense atty. Cole where he states that Paris’ offense was “on a scale of 1 to 10″ relatively minor. I’d like to see him say that to the family of Renee and Paul Gonzalez and their 3 daughters who were killed on I-25 when their car was struck head on by a drunk driver!

First of all, Judge Sauer is an extremely strong, law-abiding judge who does not look at color, money,or fame, but, what is right and wrong. I am so proud that he did not disgrace our wonderful country and our judicial system by allowing Paris special treatment. Paris broke the law-twice-and deserves to be punished.
Posted by: Lora and Jerry | June 9, 2007, 5:25 pm 5:25 pm
Good for the judge. Granted, it does seem a little harsh, but Paris is a spoiled brat, and this may turn out to be a good lesson for her. She needs to grow up, and be a respectable member of American society. There are so many people she could help, with all her money, she could rebuild the Kansas town that was destoyed by the tornado.

Paris need’s to grow up, get a “real life” and see what the “real world” is all about. Justice was served and we all need to give Judge Sauer a big applause!!!!
Posted by: Teresa | June 9, 2007, 7:00 pm 7:00 pm
I am tired of the people in her celebrity status getting special treatment. She should be treated like any common person is treated. She made her choice and with those choices come consequences. What if the next time she drinks and drives she kills someone. She needs to take responsibility for her actions and grow up. I think that the sheriff who let her out of jail was bribed. I think someone should look in his bank accounts or freezer for hidden money. Money talks. I am with the judge who sentenced her to jail. I applaude Judge Sauer, stick to your guns!
Posted by: Ellen | June 9, 2007, 9:07 pm 9:07 pm
As to her DUI per se she blew 0.08 which is not that bad. There is no black and white line on the blood alcohol level where you go from marginally impaired to an immanent danger. It is a grey scale. A DUI-driver at 0.08 is only slighly more impaired than a “distracted”-driver using a cell-phone. She did break her probation by driving on a suspended licence. Some degree of punishment is deserved but 45 days is obscenely harsh and out-of-line. Justice is not being served. But then again, there is nothing new about that. The judge and prosecuting attorneys have an agenda other than that of “justice” per se. Judging from the comments here … so do a lot of you.
Posted by: john | June 9, 2007, 9:28 pm 9:28 pm
Oh my, I believe the .08 is considered drunk. At least it is in Texas. The 3rd time, results in not just jail time, but prison time.
Maybe she should move to Texas, and try her antics.
Poor little rich girl, money has done this to her.
I agree, the Judge did the proper thing, and yes the Sheriff should answer for disobeying the judges order, in the first place.
I doubt this changes anything, with Paris— She just thinks she is so above everyone else. I think she should have been put in general population also.

Justice has prevailed. Paris would have laughed this off and added to her “cool girl” image with an “escape from jail time” story while becoming more rich and famous for absolutely nothing. I’m glad she is serving her sentence- hopefully she will learn although money may be at her disposal, the legal system and the laws we have in place aren’t.
Posted by: Christian | June 10, 2007, 12:01 am 12:01 am
This case as many others when celebrities brake the law shows that if you can affort a good lawyer, you social status is the adequated, and the same authorities do whatever it takes to get you out of the hook. People who are famous gets a special treatment that no one else gets. We got many cases with politicians who committed crimes, and they only got a slape on their hands. Justice for all, but of course not for the rich and famous because they are starts?

Paris, is working the system so well that she almost has us convienced, that she will stay the course. All she had to do is throw a trantrum feign a un-disclosed illness…and voilla !! she is in a hospital that gives her all her needs…at her beckon call !!
And the over-crowded cell ? NOT she prefered to be alone, and couldn’t even stand to be with herself !
And after watching her T.V. so called citcom. That says it all.!! She and stupid Nicole, made fun of everyone, behind their back’s..and they had no respect for the jobs they were supposed to do. Hey it all comes back to bite them in the Ass !! And well it should. Hard working folks really do care how their day ends. As she and Nicole laughed at the mess they made ! Shame on any network..that would promote their bratty agenda, and think we would agree it is really CUTE ! NOT. I hope they both get back all that they have inflicted on the “Lesser” bunch, and we are seeing it now !! So be it ! Rember this Paris and Nicole…Stop screaming WHY ME…AND IT’S NOT FAIR !! sTART THANKING GOD FOR WHAT YOU HAVE. BLESS THOSE THAT DONT HAVE….AND START GIVING BACK TO THOSE LESS FORTUNATE !!
God we are so sick of the spoiled brats of this generation!! Get a real life

People, you wanted fair- This is not
“Fair” Paris is being drawn in a fight that isn’t about her, but about rich/poor… She is being told what to do/think, say… therefor any damage the Judge does- and did- is not in the “fair Justice category” Sure she is spoiled…you would be too if you had the money she has at her disposal-
But remember -she is someones daughter- How would you feel if it was your daughter? People some of you need too “GROW UP” I have a daughter, she’s not rich, she lives a simple life but too me she is spoiled- she knows what consequences are- But If I saw my daughter being bullied by a judge and the court system I too would do what I had to do to get her out! As would many of you if it were your child.
Paris “HUGS” This is too harsh a judgment for someone who doesn’t have
a record of Violence/drugs/ Murder..
Our jails are too crowded already with thugs- I’d rather a murder be their than Paris.

I feel really sorry for Paris Hilton & her family, rich or poor, I think she is being made an example of in a much higher arena which is not fair to her. what she did was wrong & she should accept the consequences, but what if she were your daughter or grandaughter? I think the “punishment” issued is not what she needs. Why not send her to New Orleans or the Mississippi Gulf Coast to see how those people have suffered & are still suffering after Katrina. Put her to work in the real world of helping people put their lives back together & maybe she will understand material things are not as important as how we live our lives by helping one another. I wish her the best in her life to come & pray she will put the important things in life in perspective.

I think that paris hilton is going thru some sort of drug withdrawals.
If someone had been on psych meds before going to jail they would be certain to continue them once incarcerated.
I think she was on a drug that could not be disclosed to the Sheriff dept. And it is something more than oxycodone or xanax because she would be able to get some doc to give prescription.
Personally I wonder what was in the cupcakes delivered to her house.

A fine wouldn’t be enough for his kind of behaviour, especialy scince money is no problem for her.
I still feel sorry for her though and I think she’s learnt her lesson and will think 2 about her actions again.

B. Harper apparently doesn’t understand the concept of a “grey scale”. Educate yourself: fety.
The story here goes far beyond Paris Hilton per se. As to whether the judge is dispensing justice and equal treatment under the existing law there is objective information available to quantify that. Judge Sauer handles something like 100 DUI cases per day. His rulings are a matter of public record. Here is an intellegent question: Among low-BAC offenders (say <0.1) what range of punishment does he typically mete out to those who violate the terms of their probation and how does that compare to that of other judges in LA? How does Paris's punishment compare? How about it ABC? How about providing some investigative analysis of merit?

I’m particularly fond of Paris Hilton but,the judge was wrong. You don’t let someone out on house arrest then less than 24 hrs. later rule to put them back in.The judge has a vendetta plus the outcry of the public.why is it when people are wealthy others tend to be hateful?I have a son incarcerated and I still sat the judge was wrong on this call

Enough, already. Now this PR “statement from Paris” about her jail stay. What a bunch of crap. I’m not sure she even realizes there is a war going on. If her mother is smart, she’ll keep her daughter out of the limelight for at least a year. Maybe people will forget her horrible reputation and behavior and be willing to give her a chance. In that year she might try spending her time doing good deeds for others less fortunate than herself. And what about these dozens of pictures of herself in her home. Why does she love herself so much? What is so wonderful about her? What a pathetic creature! And after seeing what she really looks like, how can anyone think she’s “hot”. Grow up missy. Start thinking about others for once in your life.

Both parents and Paris should be required to do 200 hours of community service work each to teach them all about giving back to their community, something that was sadly obviously not taught to any of them much unlike the Shrivers, Kennedys, or even the Trumps.

What you have to realize that before the
judge was a judge he was a lowlife Atty.
Now he is just a lowlife politician on a God Trip.In real world terms if Paris Hilton was not a celebrity she wouldn’t be in jail. The judge is just trying to insure
that being a tough judge he gets elected for another term. You can be sure if it was his kid or one of his buddys kids they wouldn”t be in jail.
ny judge that uses someone or crumbles
under public pressure (wich is what he did)is unfit for the job. I hope the public sees this and votes him out of
office on next election. Unfortunetly
the general public is small minded and
is jealous of people who inherit money
and fame. There the ones who voted for that yahoo of a judge anyways.

thank you , I am a good mom- but even as good parent children do things that are not always right- Yes, I might agree Paris mom needs a course on teaching her kids better about right and wrong and what is out there in the real world… But I disagree that she needs to do more time- she isn’t a murder’ our jails are full- Murders and thugs need to be there-not Paris- she’s paid her fine- and done time isn’t that enough now?

Let’s face facts.
If a normal person was arrested for drunk driving, violated the terms or the plea bargin and or sentence twice, not once, jail time would be the revised sentence.
Showing up for court late and then, being stupid enough not to show up for the Friday hearing compounds the issue.
Money is the root of all evil but the root too of moronic behavior.
Posted by: ginger | June 11, 2007, 9:29 am 9:29 am
Am I the only one that thinks that Paris should have been taught these lessons of good citizen behavior by her parents instead of the taxpayers?
Apparently her parents let her have and do whatever she wanted as she grew up – thus a spoiled, sheltered brat with no common sense that can’t function in every day society.
Posted by: Chris Shemwell | June 11, 2007, 9:32 am 9:32 am
She is a spoiled brat;if allowed to be out of jail she may KILL someone yet while driving. Sheriff was WRONG, Judge is definitely right in making her go back to jail and serve her time just like anyone else (rich or poor) who broke the law…serve her time in jail. Also, the Judge should really impose some jail time (days) for the Sheriff.I want to know how much $$$ he got paid for helping free Paris.
Posted by: Kay Stevens | June 11, 2007, 12:48 pm 12:48 pm
Regarding whether the sentence is too harsh — No, Ms. Hilton hasn’t murdered anyone. Yet. Drinking and then getting behind the wheel of a vehicle not once, but repeatedly is a recipe for tragedy. Maybe someone should arrange for Ms. Hilton to have a little chat or two with families of victims of drunk drivers. Ask them whether she “deserves” jail time for her apparent complete disregard of her own and others’ safety. The sentence is fair and deserved. This was a much-needed wake up call for not only Ms. Hilton but all the other celebrities who seem to think they are not to be held accountable for outrageous and/or antisocial behavior. Yes, I believe she is being made an example of. It’s about time someone was. I can only hope her comments to Barbara Walters are sincere. Time will tell.
Posted by: Debbie | June 11, 2007, 1:25 pm 1:25 pm
Here is what I think … this is a good learning curve for Paris. Maybe this would stop her from further damaging herself and anyone else for that matter. This is not about rich kid-poor kid. It is about the fact that at one point in life we all need to grow up and assume responsibilty for our actions (unlike Paris who blamed her publicist). You can’t pay people to think for you. God has given u a brain … so use it.
Neway my wish for Paris is that she makes the most of her time in jail and re-evaluate her life and come out as truly reformed person. We all get second chances in line and here is Paris’s chance to prove others wrong.
Posted by: buddhika | June 11, 2007, 2:51 pm 2:51 pm
Grey, white, or black lines, 0.08 was obviously drunk enough for Paris to get pulled over since it was drunk enough for an offical to notice. But the fact remains that she was drinking and driving. And I believe she had a suspended license? She made a choice to continue being stupid when she had already been warned about this type of behavior and she should now face up to the consequences of those actions and her choices.
Is the sentence too harsh? In my opinion, no. But then maybe I’m too opininated from all the cases of drunk driving killings that I’ve seen. If it were my daughter that was sitting in jail under the same circumstances would I be upset? Well, I’d probably be happy let her learn her lesson from jail not from the comfort of home since she obviously hadn’t learned at home yet.
It’s time for Paris Hilton to grow up and this is just part of it.

I love her comment today that she’s finished with “acting dumb”…she was acting??! That’s the best acting job I’ve seen since Keanu Reeves in “Point Break” (“I am an F-B-I agent!”…sure you are, Keanu.) Paris deserves an Academy Award for that.

It just continues to boggle the mind that every one supporting
Paris or the idea that her sentence was “unfair” fails to understand that
she was NOT put in jail over her suspended license. Her license was suspended because that was a condition of her slap on the wrist(that
every one gets) first offense reckless driving condition. Also as
part of her probation was mandatory alcohol counseling. Not only did
she fail to sign up for any class..she was caught driving on a
suspended license TWICE! Ergo she violated her PAROLE…
That is why the judge came down on her and sentenced her to jail. The uproar came when she was let out according to the sheriff due to “medical reasons”. If he would have said overcrowding there would not have been this amount of public outcry.
Up until last week, I had basically ignored the paris syndrome. I couldn’t care less who she was, who she blew. or how much money a second she makes. But after I started researching her family history and who she is now did I find
a person that is not worthy of any of the attention bestowed upon her. While I can pity her, I do hate how many people blindly follow her like a pied piper and their only arguement to people that don’t like her is that everyone else is jealous of her wealth and beauty.
If shecan find it within herself to become a true person of character you
might be reading the writing of a future Paris fan, but the sad part
is that I don’t see that happening. Looking at that picture of the
parent Hiltons had me cringing. The smile on mama’s face as she’s visiting her daughter shows how happy she is for all this publicity.

most people are just jealous.
it was obvious that being stupid was an act!
she’s very smart to think of doing something like that because if she came off as an intelligent beautiful woman
she wouldn’t have as much attention
she would be just like another hollywood celebrity!
So she does all this crazy stuff and all everyone is ever talking about is paris hilton.i think that a lot of bloggers are VERY hateful.they should give her a break!
