Nigerian Gang Threatens to Kill Toddler Hostage
The mother of a three-year-old girl kidnapped at gunpoint yesterday by Nigerian militants says that the captors warned her they would kill the girl if her father did not swap places with her, according to British and Nigerian media reports. Margaret Hill, the daughter of a British expatriate oil worker and Nigerian woman living in the oil-rich Niger Delta region, was being driven to school yesterday when gunmen cut off the car and took the girl at gunpoint, stabbing her driver in the process. Police ordered her father not to swap places and the captors are demanding cash for her return, but have not named a specific amount, according to reports. Jack Cloonan, an ABC News consultant and hostage negotiator deals with kidnappings in Nigeria frequently. He says the brazen act of kidnapping a small child is an escalation of an already volatile situation. "It is a new escalation. We’ve never encountered this in our work," says Cloonan. "Here’s a guy living off the economy, married to a Nigerian and they take his kid." In the last three years, kidnap-for-cash has become an increasing problem in the Niger Delta. More than 100 foreign oil workers have been kidnapped in this year alone. In previous years, most of the kidnappings were undertaken by the organized militant group MEND (Movement to Emancipate the Niger Delta), or groups similar, who demand that the impoverished residents in the Niger Delta receive more of the billions of dollars of oil revenue. But Cloonan says the increasing frequency of random groups taking hostages for cash could leave the Niger Delta in complete chaos. "It’s one thing to deal with MEND," says Cloonan. "But this strikes me as more of a criminal act. To target kids is as nasty as it gets." Cloonan worries that Hill’s kidnapping marks a turning point for the worst in the region. "It could lead to a rash of kidnappings just like it," he says. The leader of MEND, who identifies himself as "Jomo" told ABC News.com in an email that "we abhor all forms of violence against women and children and will join in the search for the monsters who carried out the abduction." You really should work on keeping this site updated. The original investigative work is very praiseworthy, but keeping dead stories on the site makes it look cheap and neglected.

These individuals mean no harm to anyone (Ha, Ha) Wake up! This is not the first time these very polite individuals have attacked the US or UK. They HATE all of us even if you are a Democrat or a Republican. They have hurt and killed innocent people even during the Bush 1 & Clinton Administration. It is US (the United States)that have to pull together even if you HATE GW. Two more 9-11′s still would make you think it is GW’s fault?

Second day:
You really should work on keeping this site updated. The original investigative work is very praiseworthy, but keeping dead stories on the site makes it look cheap and neglected. This child has been released with only mild nutritional problems and some mosquito bites. But this story is just sitting here.

This is the worst nightmare, losing a child. However, I do agree that if you make the trade either both will be killed or one of the other. I do not think I would give these heartless bandits one cent, and if they really cared about the conditions of the people of the improvished Niger Delta, then bring union to these people, voice the concerns, the trials, the condititons upon which these people are forced to exist; trust me someone will hear you, the way these monsters chose to get the attention and bring publicity to the imporverished Niger Delta, makes them worst than the people whom they have chosen to attack. Imagine, taking a child away from the parents what kind of justice could be given. I would just dropped to my knees and pray!

I have a daughter in the Navy and I am so sick of hearing about al qaeda. There are so many worthy organizations that deserve more of the reading public. But then if you try to put al qaeda out of your life, they may blow up your car!

Huuuhh? this story is about kidnapping in the Niger Delta, not AQ…anyway, US Navy personnel were among the first Americans killed by AQ…I get tired of reading about AQ, too, but at the moment, they are a pretty big enemy of the American people, and have stated their intent to kill you and your daughter…
