Bodyguards for Iraqi Judges Prohibited From Carrying Guns
Despite death threats and attempts on their lives, Iraqi judges are not allowed to have armed bodyguards, a senior U.S. official told the Blotter on ABCNews.com. "The Ministry of the Interior has not approved for them to carry weapons," U.S. Special Inspector General for Iraq Reconstruction (SIGIR) Stuart Bowen said in an interview Tuesday of judicial security details. "That exposes the judges to a very serious personal threat, and intimidation." Bowen said he learned of the situation during a recent three-week visit to the country, where he spoke to Iraqi judges and prosecutors about the country’s judicial system. More than 30 judges have been killed in the line of duty in recent years, the Iraqi Higher Judicial Council disclosed this month. Bowen said the Interior Ministry’s position was perplexing. "There’s not a good rationale for that," he said. "I’m concerned." Click Here for Full Blotter Coverage. The ministry has long been considered a haven and armory for Shiite Muslim militias operating in the country. Its commando units have been known to operate as sectarian death squads, although its new chief has vowed to replace any commanders who have been implicated in kidnappings or murder. Despite promises of reform, the Italian police busted a secret $40 million arms deal the Interior Ministry had apparently struck with Italian traffickers to buy weapons without U.S. knowledge. Judges aren’t the only officials of Iraq’s rule of law system who receive death threats, according to Bowen. Fear haunts the staff of the Commission on Public Integrity, who are currently working nearly 1,000 open investigations of fraud and abuse by Iraqi officials. "I met with the commissioner here in Washington yesterday," Bowen said. "He has been subjected to very serious threats and intimidation tactics. Just a couple days ago, the house next to his was mortared in the Green Zone. He’s very fearful for his life and the lives of his family." Despite this, prosecutions are occurring, although they are mostly of Sunni officials, Bowen said. And when prosecutors manage to convict a criminal, the victory can be short-lived, said Bowen. The inspector general said a judge in Baghdad told him about encountering a convicted murderer in public recently. "[It was] someone who he convicted and sentenced for life — he ran into him on the street," Bowen said. The judge, whom Bowen declined to name out of concern for the judge’s safety, confronted the man. "He said, ‘You’re right, I was guilty. You ran a good trial. But I was able to keep myself out of prison by paying $40,000,’" said Bowen. "I’m concerned about the capacity of Iraq’s rule of law system to enforce the law." Just great.
Does it seem to anyone else that the people in charge are deliberately sabatoging the war?
I guess that just means more money for Haliburton.

Let me get this straight. We lost over 150,000 guns in Iraq, yet we can’t arm these body guards.
HAHAHAHAHAHAHHA.

Some extremely courageous Iraqi’s are standing up to the fear and intimidation of the Shiite militia’s, as well as to Al Qaeda. The worst of the Shiite militia’s is the Mahdi army, but they have apparently become fractured. Al Qaeda is however the most ruthless and it takes enormous courage to stand up to them.

General “Betrayus”? That’s a brilliant comment from daddy who probably never served a day in the military nor knows anything about General Petraus. It’s pretty easy to criticize as you sit on your couch isn’t it?

The US troops are just like the British in the US revolution – G.W. Bush.
I guess that means they’re supposed to lose, but its still profitable. Funny stuff, entertaining. Really.

Ryan,
If there is anything I could do to help our military recover from what has been done to them I would, especially the poor front line grunt and never the sycophant general like “BETRAYUS”. For now, I have chosen to protest a failed administration led by a national guard shirk as you republicans support, having allowed an election to be tainted by dumping on the combat veteran as you do today. I want the draft because I had to face it during a republican led war of terror, got my low number, got my A-1 chopped meat status ready to serve and would have even with my liberal democratic war protester position I hold to this day. Nixon let me go about 2 weeks before my induction in an act of GOD I still amuse myself with. I don’t spend much time on a couch because that usually means I am mesmerized by the TV looking at failed news outlets as far from liberal as they can get, pumping up steam for your failed position and party. VOILA(french term)

The likes of Daddy give the States a bad name… probably lambasted previous administrations for not removing Saddam, probably complains that nothing is being done about Darfur, yet if the UN/US did go in would then complain that they were on a sovereign nation’s territory.

Americans sucks, they are all Borg who say they support the troops without any idea of what that actually means. In the USA logic is now a vice.
Well I support the gardeners, no maybe people who work at 7-11′s. Of course for Americans the point may be lost
