Private Paddling Club Faces Congressional Ire

At a time when the Democrat-controlled Congress appears to direct its attacks and investigations at the White House, two powerful Democratic lawmakers have chosen an unlikely target elsewhere in the city: a local canoe club. The Washington Canoe Club is a private group that operates a boathouse for its members on the banks of the Potomac River near the tony Georgetown neighborhood, on land it has leased from the National Park Service for $5,000 a year. That seems inappropriate, say Michigan Reps. John Dingell and Bart Stupak, chairmen of the House Energy and Commerce Committee and its investigative subcommittee, respectively. The two men questioned the Interior Department’s practice of granting restrictive leases to private clubs in a letter to Secretary Dirk Kempthorne last month. "We find it especially troubling that…the Washington Canoe Club…appears to be an exclusive private club limited to a few hundred individuals who were lucky or wealthy enough to pass a rather restrictive screening process," wrote Dingell and Stupak to Kempthorne, whose department oversees federal parkland. They’ve got it all wrong, the club’s president says. Click Here for Full Blotter Coverage. "Our membership application form does not request any information on income or assets whatsoever," WCC president Andrew Soles told the Blotter on ABCNews.com. "[I]t simply requests information on prospective members’ interests in paddling and [their] willingness to participate in a volunteer organization dedicated to canoe and kayak racing." To join the group, one must be sponsored by two current members, undergo a personal interview and a vote by the club’s board. If accepted, fees are $400 a year — although Soles said that is the lowest for groups of that kind. The club has a history of serious paddling. Since canoeing became an official Olympic event in 1936, WCC members have been on nearly every U.S. team, and many have won medals, according to the club’s Web site. But Dingell and Stupak still have questions. In their July 16 letter to Kempthorne, the two demanded to know who at Interior was involved in renewing the club’s lease, which had expired this year; records of all contact between the club and Kempthorne’s department; and information on whether Interior officials considered the "background" of the club’s membership to the "socio-economic make-up of the District of Columbia." But Soles, a senior business consultant with the Nature Conservancy by day, said his group is made up of serious paddlers, not fancypants. "We’ve got firefighters; we’ve got schoolteachers. As for notables, we don’t have anything like that," he said. The congressmen said their concern was sparked by an April study, which found the National Park Service has for many years granted such leases to members-only groups, including yachting, beach and sportsmen’s clubs. Some beach clubs cited in the report have membership fees topping $1,500 a summer, with mandatory cabana rentals that can cost as much as $4,000 for the season. The lawmakers’ letter concerned only the canoe club. Do you have a tip for Brian Ross and the Investigative Team?

These two Reps obviously have way too much time on their hands — C’mon guys!! Let’s focus on some really important issues instead of trying to create a tempest in a tea pot!! Y’all are the reason that people don’t have any regard for Congress.

John Dingell – Georgetown University Undergrad and Law School. As everyone knows – follow the money… Dingell wants GU to have a Rowing Club and the NPS won’t let them have it. So he’s leaning on the NPS. Oldest story in the book, and I’m surprised the reporter didn’t pick up on it.

Gosh I’m so glad the Democrats have their priorities straight. Go after a stupid canoeing club. Never mind the psychotic terrorist who want to kill us. Stop the canoes!

all you commandos who are complaining about terrorists on the loose should hang up your keyboards and hop the next plane to Iraq and kick butt there, after you help your moms with the dishes.

Let them continue with stupid stuff like this, it just shows how unserious they are about real world problems…and why liberals are becoming a laughingstock in DC and I suspect around the US.

The comptroller general says the US government is on a “burning platform” of fiscal instability, and these yahoos are concerned with paddle clubs??
Busybody congressmen need to get off the back of the paddlers’ clubs that are doing thier part for American health and fitnes.

Tell me — how you thought this article was going to be about rowing when you saw the title?

President Bush’s Deputy Chief of Staff Karl Rove passed government security secrets to un-authorized persons, betrayed/exposed the CIA staff operating in the enemy countries, lied about the security of the United States of America and fired competent federal judges.
These behaviors are not only deplorable, but also jeopardized the security of the USA and undermined the war against the international terrorism.

“the club’s membership to the “socio-economic make-up of the District of Columbia.”…. sounds like race baiting to me, as I’ve never seen blacks very heavily involved in rowing or any water sports for that matter.

While Benny is whinning about allegations concering what Rove may or may not have done, where was he when former Clinton acolyte, Sandy Berger was “convicted” for illigal/unauthorized removal and destruction of highly classified documents from the national archives? Speaking of jeapordizing national security!
I would think that people who live in glass houses would be much more careful.

Thanks Bill for the insight. Age old ploy, want to know what a person is doing? Look at what they are whining about. This is only one example of political pot shots that both parties are participating in, so let’s ignore the blame game. Methinks this is a non-issue.

What is the point of this “expose”? Should the club have to pay more for the lease because the members have done well for themselves? The price for leasing public property should be the same for anyone and more often than not it should be pretty cheap.

Ok, so as I was reading this I became a bit turned off by the part that said:
“We’ve got firefighters; we’ve got schoolteachers. As for notables, we don’t have anything like that,” he said.
I am a school teacher and my husband is a firefighter and we are both parents and my career is quite notable I just wanted you to know. This fine country is made up of many “notable” middle class everyday citizens who are just fighting to provide for their families and not depend on the system to get by. I once talked to a women who was on assistance and was going to get her hair colored and her nails done. I believe I am quite a bit a notable school teacher. I have three girls to provide for and I do not even get reduced lunch meals or any handouts. Needles to say I can not afford to get my hair dyed or my nails done. But, then again according to this article I am only a teacher not a notable.

At a time when the National Park Service is struggling after decades of republican budget cuts, these sweetheart leases are a huge loss in revenues, the corruption behind the deals should be investigated. It all smells like a Jack Abramoff payoff scam. Keep digging Dems, we want our government back, all of it, including the canoeing ponds.
