The CIA threw a 60th birthday party barbecue for itself at its Langley, Va., headquarters today, with former President George H.W. Bush as the special guest of honor. According to a CIA statement, Bush, the director of the CIA from 1976 to 1977, spoke to some 1,500 CIA employees and criticized "doomsayers who know so little about what you do." In an unusually detailed description of the event, the CIA statement says Bush was invited to attend the outdoor event by CIA director Michael Hayden, and "cut a birthday cake and lunched on a barbecue menu that included pulled barbecue pork, barbecue chicken, hamburgers, cole slaw, German potato salad, baked beans and brownies."
