Ambush: Video Shows U.S. Troops Being Hunted, Killed

Dramatic new video shows how American soldiers in Afghanistan are being set up for deadly ambushes after trying to make peace with village elders in Taliban-controlled areas. The effort to win the "hearts and minds" of village elders in the Korengal Valley of Kunar Province in Afghanistan has proved to be a dangerous one for U.S. troops, with elders often suspected of tipping Taliban fighters to the soldiers’ schedule and whereabouts. The video to be broadcast tonight on ABC News’ "World News With Charles Gibson" and "Nightline" was shot by "Vanity Fair" contributing editor Sebastian Junger and photographer Tim Hetherington embedded with the 2nd Platoon, Battle (B) company of the 173rd Airborne on a joint assignment for ABC News and "Vanity Fair" magazine. Photos: The Forgotten War in Afghanistan Six soldiers from another 173rd Airborne company, C Company, 1st Platoon, were killed in an ambush over the weekend in Afghanistan as they returned from a Shura, a meeting, with village elders.    The new video shows the men of the 2nd Platoon of Battle Company twice walking into traps after leaving meetings with village elders, one called to discuss details of a U.S.-financed water pipe project. "We went from being the hunters to the hunted," said photographer Tim Hetherington who was with the troops when they were attacked last month. Good Morning America Video: The Forgotten War Three U.S. soldiers were killed and six others wounded in the October ambush. A medic was killed in July as the platoon left a similar meeting with village elders. The video also shows a contentious showdown between U.S. commanders and village elders, who deny hiding Taliban fighters. "Are you calling me a liar that I got shot at last night?" Lt. Matt Piosa, the 2nd Platoon leader, shouts at the elders. In the five and a half months the 173rd Airborne has been in Afghanistan, it has been involved in an estimated 450 enemy engagements, commanders say. Look for more in "Vanity Fair’s" January issue on the newsstands in December.

To Send Letters to the Soldiers: Many of our readers tell us they want to send their wishes to the soldiers of the 2nd Platoon, Battle Company, 173rd Airborne. As the forward unit in Afghanistan’s Korengal Valley, they are being profiled for a special project appearing in "Vanity Fair" and on ABC News. Letters can be addressed to: 2nd Platoon, Battle Company, 2-503rd PIR

I can not believe that while I was watching this the young soldier who received the mail from a debt collector, what is wrong with our country when we have nothing better to do than send bills to our troups. I am truley sorry for the company that holds such little regard for the soldier fighting for our country, but holds the dollar in such high regard. SHAME ON YOU!!!

To think that Afghanistan was alrady secured. thanks to Bush’s incompetence, the Taliban is gaining ground again.
Afghanistan was hiding Bin Laden who was responsible for 9/11. Saddam Hussein hated Bin Laden, and yet he is the one that we kill! We have more troops in Irak than Afghanistan, I dont suppose the oil have something to do with it?;)

Congratulations on this exclusive. It’s great that you could air this video on national television, but should you? You are showing what I assume is graphic footage of young Americans getting killed. I do not see how airing the video achieves anything. I will be one person who will not be watching ABCNews tonight.

If you can’t think like your enemy in Afghanistan then your going to be the hunted. We are not the only ones who can make alliances.
Keep your friends close and your your enemy’s even closer.

I am not a bit surprised to hear things like that, we have been there way too long. We are no longer welcome there, the only time that they will need us there is when we leave. This is another war that we had to right being there at all but we are now we need to get out NOW.
GOD BLESS ALL OF OUT INNOCENT MEN THAT ARE THERE AND I AM IN HOPES EVERYDAY THEY WILL RETURN VERY SHORTLY AS I AM SURE HE IS EVERYDAY!!!

This horrified me. My son is going into to Afganistan next year. Thanks to Bush not ending the war. It will be his 3rd tour the first 2 were in Iraq. How much longer is this going to go on. This is like playing russian roulette with our childrens lives.

What is ABC calling this the forgotten war? I haven’t forgotten about it. It is ABC’s choice whether or not to cover it. It was they who haven’t been covering it, and with this lack of coverage THEY are the ones who have forgotten it. Now they are telling us that WE forgot it.

no way to fight a war!!!!!!!!!!! Get people from the UN to go in there. our troops are not social workers as you see. they go to make peace and get killed by this people. they do not care about us. set up a 10 mile free fire zone along the border with Pak. and shoot anything that moves. if we do not fight a war like a war we will lose by attrition alone. time will prove me right. look at the russians. we will never stop this as long as these countries have no or poorly defined and enforced borders to the terrorists

We should send some of these braniacs posting messages here to Afghanistan. Obviously they know better than the Cmdr in Chief, the generals and every soldier in the battlefield.I think the war will over in no time, what say you?

Posted by: FRANK S. | November 12, 2007, 10:36 am 10:36 am

The oil? The energy industry is doing quite well these days. No one ever said we invaded Iraq to make things better fo you and I. They said we invaded iraq for the oil companies. So I will ask the question. Have things gotten better for the oil companies? Absolutely yes! They also have set up contracts to sell Iraq’s oil when the oppertunity presents itself.

I agree about PRESIDENT Bush being a poor leader in this war. I do not agree that you are better for your slurs and appeasment mindset. Highminded ignorance!

Yes Afghanistan is the forgotten war, all the attention is on Iraq, everything is on getting troops out of there. What about our brave men and women who are loosing their lives in Afghanistan. The 173rd ABCT has lost 24 heroes since being in Afghanistan. Just remember all of you out there that it is by the blood of these young people and all who bravely serve that we have the freedoms we have.

To those who think we are “losing” in Afghanistan. If we pull our troops out, we win. The Afghani’s will once again be mired in dishonesty, brutality and filth. They can accept help from the West to advance themselves, or they can settle for a brutal form of Islamic government. The Afghani’s who set traps for our troops are defeating themselves.

Am I supposed to feel sorry for you because it costs you too much to fill up your gas guzzling suburban?? Seriously? Also, the notion that we would go there for oil is not disprooven bythehigh price of gas. The oil companies and the administration in Wash. that does their bidding do not care about the american people. they just want to control the oil so they can squeeze every ounce of profit out of us.

Agenda-driven, media hacks call it a Forgotten War because they conveniently ‘forget’ to report the good news and focus only on the sensational stories. The newsroom mantra, “if it bleeds it leads” is a handy substitute for talent and balance.

Posted by: S Moyer | November 12, 2007, 11:12 am 11:12 am

Afghanistan has the reputation for being the “graveyard for foreign armies”. In the 19th century the British attempted to retreat from Afghanistan after a failed three year occupation. Of the force of about 14,000, of whom 10,000 were civilians, only one individual managed to escape; all the rest were massacred. The Russians entered Afghanistan as the ally of the existing government. We know its fate; this failed adventure was probably a significant contributing factor in the downfall of the Soviet Union. Watching a documentary on the life of the Afghan tribesmen, in struck me that in that male dominated warrior society, the men would rather fight than make love; how can the decadent West conquer a people such as that? Our soldiers have one major strike against them from the get go: they just want to make some money and go home and have as normal a life as possible. They don’t live to fight. I doubt very seriously that the Afghan warriors have much respect for our troops.

it does not take much to be smarter than our current commander in chief with his ‘gentleman’s c-’s’ – he is no scholar nor is he a patriot – gwb knows all about smiling to your face and sticking a knife in your back – he has done it to his own country the constitution of which he swore to honor and protect – he should be tried for high treason – but he could legitimately get off on an insanity defense – he is a sociopath with no sense of right/wrong – i wouldn’t shake hands with him – he has brought shame and dishonor on our country – we are a mighty ship in danger of foundering – our founding fathers would be shocked and dismayed as i certainly am -

Have you read of Arab and Muslim grievances against the US and Britain? Any idea of how many civilians have been killed over decades with weapons stamped MADE IN USA?

I love how the idiots at ABC call Afghanistan the “Forgotten War.” Isn’t it the media who does the reporting? So wouldn’t it be true that the media are the ones who have intentionally dropped the ball in reporting the war in Afghanistan? Also, I agree with Frank S., send all of these blithering idiots who seem to know how to fix the situation. I serve in the Air Force Combat Comm, how about the rest of you nay sayers?

When do Americans show videos of Americans being hunted down? If this were Taliban propaganda, it would be understandable and it is a disgrace that ABC does so. The war is not a Bush war, but it is an American war and a bit of concern for “our side” is the only approach American outlets should be showing.

Posted by: Peter C | November 12, 2007, 11:25 am 11:25 am

What we need to do is get rid of the reporters and let our soldiers fight the way they have been trained. How can anyone concentrate on the task at hand when they are concerned for how it will look on the news. PC has no place in war.

You know it Frank S! I stumbled on this blog and it is amazing how we seem to forget that practically the entire Washington legislation supported this war at the start. No one wants to see anyone die – a life lost hurts so many…but can we put things in perspective at all? This war is nothing compared to the loss of life in Vietnam or WWII. 6000 teens die in car wrecks every year! Get a grip people…

The press only knows how to show us the bad things. Wouldn’t it be refreshing if they told us a few Hero stories of our brave countrymen? This war would have been over long ago if not for the media providing the enemy with a huge propaganda campaign in our country. Peace can’t be made until there is a winner and loser. Politically Correct Warfare, PC warfare is killing more people trying to do the right thing than if they just went in and knocked the snot out of them and then made them whole again. Being Politically Correct is the cause of many ills of our Great Country.
Can you imagine if WWII was reported like ABC and other other PC press reports this war? OMG we lost more men in one hour than we’ve lost in four years in Iraq and Afghanistan! We killed more people in one bombing run over Japan or Germany and they love us now. Respect is earned with force in these countries not with a hugg and a kiss.

My son just returned to Afghanistan and from what he has told us everything done there is highly classified. I am suprised that they where able to get this much footage. All this being said, this is exactly what he has described to us. Afghanees routinely set set traps for them and constantly sought them. Keeping your enemies close….is right on.

Posted by: JMJ | November 12, 2007, 11:53 am 11:53 am

I have friends in Afghanistan, and am in the Army myself. I can tell you from personal experience noone has forgotten this war on our side of things; why have others? This is not a conventional war, so we can’t fight it like a conventional war. We also can’t just nuke them…dont say stupid things just because you’re angry. Our military leaders are very capable, and are working on the best solution. Meanwhile, the rest of us fight not for oil, or many of the things people say, but for the soldiers to our right and left. We dont have much say ourselves as to where we go, but we’re damn sure going to try to bring each other home. The rest is up to the government, and those over us.

Rarely do I ever read reader comments but for some reason I did today. People have different opinions about things; that is natural and expected. What is amazing is to read so many comments that obviously reveal that many people are forming their opinions from superficial accounts from the major news media almost exclusively. Not much evidence of research, deeper reading and then contemplation. But I guess this is consistent with the process of things today. Schools teach our kids not how to think but what to think. The major news media don’t just report news, they have to massage it to fit their template of how things should be thought about and viewed. Differing opinions are great but there should be some solid basis for them.

Posted by: Gary McArthur | November 12, 2007, 11:58 am 11:58 am

First, I doubt the veracity of this report. First, from your description you fail to note that things are complicated out there — did the villagers really set them up? Or, more likely, were the Taliban already in the area. Fact is, the Taliban could not exist without the villiages, but that doesn’t mean the villiages purposely set up US forces.
Secondly, I remember Brian Ross’ claim, prior to the airing of his report on the Washington DC Madam and her “list,” that he would reveal some very significant and high level names they found on the list. When the report aired it was a fizzle — he did not, contrary to his pre-show claims, reveal anything significant (Sen Vitter’s involvement with the madam was revealed by another source, not Brian Ross). Could it be that Brian thinks more of himself than he delivers?
In short, I don’t buy this. This is just hype to get you all to watch. Don’t buy it. It’s just more media hype, more hot air and more sensationalsim. Truth is unimportant. Nothing’s changed.

You are such fools. Your president lied to you…and you re-elected him again. 9/11 was caused by Bin Laden…and he goes to take over iraq. Trillions of dollars are spent on this unjustified war…and the economy and dollar value is going to hell. They didn’t want you there in the first place….then you scream about your soldiers getting shot at. US Army is commercialized and outsourced to Halliburton….US jobs are going overseas..and you still wonder. So when is enough is enough for you? What are you going to do about it? Hide your head in the sand? Bush is worse than Nixon.

Isn’t that what war is all about? Each sides hunting one another? Did America actually believe it could just go into these countries, throw some weight around the people, out of fear of America’s power, would just run screaming for the hills? These peoples, even in their primitive status, are using whatever resources they have to defend themselves against what they see as an invading source. The same mistakes made in Vietnam. There too, they considered the people primitive and backwards. But the people devised ways of even bringing down a powerful helicopter with bamboo rods thrown just right between the blades of the chopper. Never unestimate the power of the will and need to survive.

I am the father of one of those men at Korengal Valley and I am ANGRY, more than any level words can imagine.
Why now, after all the time we have been in Afghanistan are we just now telling the story? Why are we allowing the Taliban, and the foreign insurgants do this to our men and sons without us invoking the wrath of the world community….does nobody care anymore? Have we finally realized that there is actually another war going on?
Wake up American, remember these men in your thoughts and prayers, don’t forget them and do everthing you can to support them.

I thought the post-9/11 plan was that the US would conduct hit-and-run raids on Afghanistan, Pakistan, Iran or whatever other loser nation harbored al-Qaida? Wipe ‘em out and let the tribal elders clean up the body parts. Make the terrorists feel like the prey they should be rather than heroic liberators of Islam.
Why do we insist on buying all this high-priced cruise missiles, stealth bombers and UAVs and then fighting a Vietnam-style guerrilla war? (Yeah, yeah. I know. Don’t knock Iraq/Afghanistan. It’s the only war we’ve got.)

You are very naive if you think we would go to war to have lower prices at the pump. Exxon mobile is still posting record profits even with oil at nearly 100$ a barrel. Do you think they care how much you have to pay to fill your gas guzzler. They don’t care about you, that’s not what people mean when they say that this is a war for oil. Exxon Mobile, Haliburton, Blackwater, and plenty of other contributers to the “neo conservative movement” are making astronomical amounts of money.
The Cmdr and Chief obviously doesn’t know anything otherwise the mission would have been accomplished in 03 like he pretended it was. Instead 07 is the bloodiest year yet in both Iraq and Afghanistan. The war might be over relatively soon depending on who wins the white house in 08, but don’t expect anything before then. And if Mcguiliomny manages to win, don’t expect the war to end before 2012.

I concur, Frank. It’s easy to sit on the couch and make executive decisions on “intel” coming from ABC and the media. Obviously these folks are qualified leaders. It’s easy to criticize and judge while other people do the work. Why would anyone with sound motives want to lead America anymore? Furthermore, shame on you, ABC, for airing enemy propaganda. I agree, that we won this war and could have sustained peace and brough great prosperity to this area if it were not for the folly of starting an unprovoked war in Iraq. That is why I am agree with the impeachment proceedings called for against the VP and hopefully the Pres. What can be a higher crime then using our troops as misleading the American people in to rushing into war with Iraq when without solid proof of WMD? Presidents will continue to act like this unless they are forced to pay a price. Why are we such soft of executives jsut becuase they claim to be sincere? The path to hell is paved with good intentions. Sincerity is not the issue, it is honesty and competence.

The Soviet war in Afghanistan also known as the Soviet-Afghan War was a nine-year conflict involving Soviet forces supporting the Marxist People’s Democratic Party of Afghanistan (PDPA) government against the largely Islamic fundamentalist Mujahideen insurgents. The latter group found support from a variety of sources including the United States, Saudi Arabia, Pakistan and other Muslim nations in the context of the Cold War. This conflict was concurrent to the 1979 Iranian Revolution and the Iran-Iraq War.
The initial Soviet deployment of the 40th Army in Afghanistan began on December 25, 1979. The final troop withdrawal began on May 15, 1988, and ended on February 15, 1989. Due to the high cost and ultimate futility of this conflict, the war in Afghanistan has often been referred to as the Soviet equivalent of the United States’ Vietnam War.
The war had a profound impact in the Soviet Union, and has been cited as one of the causes that led to the union’s eventual collapse in 1991.

You cannot fight a war when your own politicians are more interested in scoring political points than upholding their oath of office and protecting this nation.
Our Politicians spend too much time criticizing and too little time worrying about the inner workings of this country. The end results/consequences rest on the shoulders of “We the People”. Until we learn we are not being served by Washington, we will continue to suffer.

Thank you for airing this segment! Awesome job. Please continue to air segments that portray the war as it is in the battlefield. The American public needs to see these images to understand what our servicemen go thru abroad. Perhaps then we could have a clearer point of view and undestand the magnitude of the effects of any war. Great job!

The outrsage is that the villages were not demolished and the “village elders” imprisoned for their complicity in the attacks.
The restrictions imposed by “rules of engagement” prevent any rational response that would discourage participation between the villagers and their Taliban allies.
After WWII, the “wolf packs” in Germany were subject to summary execution when encountered and apprehended. That should be the consequence for the “village elders” and such cooperation with our enemies would cease. Why are we so reluctant to take the necessary effective actions?

As Michael Yon reported, because we never were able to replace the poppy as a source of income, drug money is filtering to the warlords and Taliban again. This has nothing to do with Bush but everything with tactics on the ground. So easy for you knee-jerk anti-war types to Monday Morning Quarterback every single thing in the war. Its war, and thus by its very nature is unpredicable.

Maybe fighting two endless, unnecessary counterproductive wars will prove to be better than fighting one, whatya say Frank. Heck, let’s take down Iran and Pakistan while we are at it. Then we will have done exactly what Bin Laden expected us to do, and there will be an all out religious war thats origins can be traced back to 9/11. It would make Giuliani a shoe in.

My son is serving in Afghanistan, with the unit covered in this news story. Every time the phone rings or there is a knock on the door I freeze for a second or more. You can argue about the efficacy of our presence and the justification for it. You can talk about global implications, and proffer inane arguments for employing nuclear weapons and “killing them all”.For me this is highly personal, and frankly I cannot construct a black and white argument for or against being in Afghanistan. What I fear are far more immediate implications: Will he end up, God forbid, among the 1/4 of homeless persons who are war vets? Will he suffer PTSD, and will he get the treatment needed to become a functioning member of society if that befalls him? Will he returned maimed and embittered? He is a strong young man, stronger than I am in many ways. I hope that strength sustains him. What I want, and cannot have, are assurances that he will be fine and returned to us whole.

Well, until I saw this video, I didn’t know much about FB Phoenix. I knew more about the ones in Iraq. But now I know that there are about 30 soldiers there. I guess this ranks up there with the reports back in 01 that US intel was able to track OBL by his sat phone. Oh, gee, he just turned it off… Who is more at fault for this the reporters/media or the clearing of intel by the military? Loose lips sink ships.

I’ve got news for the sweethearts at ABC news. I haven’t forgotten about this war or the guys fighting it especially the 173rd Airborne. Currahee guys. You may be there but we will never forget you nor will we lose faith in you. This is to you from a Vietnam grunt.

Posted by: Gary | November 12, 2007, 1:25 pm 1:25 pm

If you don’t want to see our troops getting attacked, then vote to get them out. This is footage of the troops actually doing their job, and you don’t want it aired. Sounds to me like you don’t support their work. Traitor. ABC is doing its job of reporting, and if you don’t want to see it, then don’t watch it. Our troops on the other hand don’t have the option of ignoring the realities on the ground because of people like you who don’t see the reality of this war.

Again, when are we going to learn that to end these conflicts once and for all you need to kill the head of the snake.
That means we need to eliminate all the political and religious leaders who are “brain washing” their people into thinking all islam nonbelievers need to be destroyed. Stop playing games and start saturation bombing until these leaders and the countries (who support them) infrastructure are destroyed. These evil people only understand one thing – overwheming force. And don’t stop until the job is done.

Posted by: Kafir | November 12, 2007, 1:30 pm 1:30 pm

As long as a dependable and stable oil supply is at stake we will be in the middle east whether it is Iraq or Afghanistan. Those of you who spit on us when we came home from Vietnam and are now playing a PR game by saying you support the grunts but not the war you don’t fool anybody. No one in the US is willing to go without oil since our economy would grind to a halt and all of you sweethearts would start demanding we do over there in full force to get it.

YOU AMERICANS.
You are such a fortunate people. You have the right to have opinions. Being the most powerful nation on earth is not easy. The complex world situation is not aways easy to understand, even by the experts.
It is easy to criticize whose in government, as if they didn’t have the best interests of the country at heart. From the President, on down, it is a thankless job. They have to represent the do-nothing Americans who have never supported their country in any way. Never served their country in the armed
forces, even as cooks or other jobs. Never given anything back to their country and never understood the meaning of “ask not what our country can do for you. Ask what you can do for your country.” When I came to this country, I served in the military, underline served. One of the duties of citizenship. Underline duties. So many do-nothing Americans have citizenship simply because they were born here. It takes more than being born somewhere to be a true citizen. A true citizen give back to their country. Have you given America anything back today?
Right or Left we are all in this together, lets put America first.

The natural state of man is conflict.
This unreasonable goal of eliminating conflict and war in such a milieu is confusing to the nattering classes.
As resources diminish and the “single superpower” status of the United States is questioned, outbreaks will occur that challenge our preeminence, as the fight for available resources intensifies and becomes a matter of survival. Unless we respond with authority, we shall suffer the consequences attendant to deprivation.
Burgeoning populations, industrialization with increasing resource use, and the finite and exhaustible nature of commodities (even agriculture is essentially mining of the soil) and such necessities as potable water, are a sure prescription for war.
Face reality and emotionally prepare for the future, a world of strife. That is the nature of our existence. Just hope that we recognize our situation, and have the fortitude to enter the fray, engage, and prevail.

Posted by: Johnson | November 12, 2007, 1:34 pm 1:34 pm

When our troops are ambushed after leaving a meeting, I would look very closely at what information might have been leaked and if no particular explanation can be given than the elders themselves leaked the information, then I would think those elders had allied themselves with our enemies and should be treated as enemy combatants. Not all enemy combatants carry guns. Some carry pencils or call meetings and set up soldiers to be ambushed. Torture them? No. Kill them? Yes.

Posted by: Basil | November 12, 2007, 2:02 pm 2:02 pm

Evidently the village elders aren’t idiots and know you can’t trust the United States. This is what happens when you invade someone else’s land and kill their families. You think that after you just got done bombing their homes, that they are going to be your friends?
I have no pity for the soldiers over there b/c the US is the aggressor and the US soldiers are tools for greed, imperialism, and capitalism. Maybe if they kill enough soldiers the US will leave. One can only hope.

Posted by: anarchist | November 12, 2007, 2:03 pm 2:03 pm

Simply stated, and what has been stated repeatedly by Michael Schauer (sp?), we’re not killing enough of the enemy and we’re foolishly playing by a set of rules our enemies have ridiculed. We’re not mean and ruthless enough. The idea that our peace-time integrity and compassion can be transferred to the battlefield is inane.

Maybe the next time Afghan President Hamid Karzai assails US troops for being suspicious and distrustful of his “innocent countrymen” he should take a look at some of this kind of video footage.
Possibly then he would pick up some clue as to why US soldiers might be persuaded at times to shoot first and ask questions later.

ABC and Vanity Fair must be absolutely giddy with glee. They have pulled off another hit piece against America’s war on terror, assuring all that we are utterly doomed to defeat. Things have not been going well for them and the Democrats recently. The “Surge” has worked and things are going well in Iraq, but ignoring this success is not enough. They must keep up the incessant propaganda assault and must have looked long and hard to find this story. As they frighten the soldiers families here at home, they embolden and encourage the enemy overseas. This is a crude, despicable and typical chunk of propaganda from a media that is 90% Democrat, hard left, and invested in American defeat. A group that happily posts a daily American body count as it adores the party endorsed by Castro, Chavez, Bin Ladin, and Zarqawi (Satan keep him).

Reviewing some of the above comments
by the ovbviously liberal Democrats, one
can see that they would rather prefer
a complete capitulation to the Jihadists
terrorists than the protection of our
country. This war on terror will last
longer than most will live to see any
simblance of peace.They whine,cry and
blame Bush for everything that they,
themselves, cannot cope because they
are aware that the only way they can
gain attention is acting like a bunch of
spoiled juveniles stomping their feet
and screaming foul until they get what
they want. The one that scream ” No

Kindergarten class in economics.
The liberal Democrat radicals are more
of a danger to our country than any
Jihadist.

Well done Robert! I was wondering when I would find a post that stated the obvious. CBS, NBC, ABC, How anyone can still find these networks credible for real “whats important to America” news is beyond my comprehension. Thanks to the internet, the average American now has the power to sift through the events of the day, and put the pieces together themselves. The footage he brought home with him on R&R was amazing. Pretty similar to this, but a different comapany. It’s hard to believe how much they use women and children as their scapegoats.

Someone said, “..it’s Clinton’s fault…” I have a news flash for some of you folks: You better start to look elsewhere besides all of the usual sources for your “news and information” because the real truth is the fault goes beyond one administration. The simple reality is we as a nation have been ridden like a prize shetlon pony a the fair for decades. We are complicit in all of this insanity because we’re too busy making ourselves stupid on consumerism and pleasure. God help us. Our men and women DO NOT FIGHT BECAUSE THEY (the bad guys) hate us for our freedom. What the purpose of this type of story is I could speculate, accordingly, but won’t. Please, let your soldier friend know that his commitment DOES make us feel safer. Tell him that what he does DOES make a difference and is appreciated. Buck ABC, buck the mainstream media and buck all the politically minded folk who just want failure written across the forehead of any soldier who ever lived– do what is right and thank him, support him and remember him as a hero just doing his job.

It’s amazing the idiocy of many of the individuals that are posting here. As a history teacher and teacher educator, I feel ashamed for the inadequate education that you or your children have received from schools that have created lemmings that follow the liberal talking points and media images that are produced daily without any thought of all sides of the issue.
A couple of points:
1. A war for oil? Come on, we’ve spent hundreds of times more money on these wars than we could have spent getting in good with these nations that hate us but have the oil we want. And these American oil companies do not set the prices that we are paying. It is OPEC that controls the flow of foreign oil, if anyone is to blame it’s the Arabian countries, Venezuala, and other OPEC members that are reaping in the most benefits by setting a limit on production. Has anyone heard about supply and demand? India and China are needing more and more oil, what happens to cost? It goes up. Yeah, so these American companies have made some money, do you realize they were losing money for dozens of years before the recent demand increase?
2. While being in Iraq may have its arguable points for and against, was Afghanistan not the country harboring Al Qeada, the terrorist group responsible for 9/11, WTC ’93, the USS Cole, the African embassy bombings? Come on, I think that’s a good enough reason…

Like Rome in the days of Tiberius and Gaius Gracchus, America (the people) grow weary of overseas adventures that drain the US treasury being paid on borrowed money.
The Roman soldiers did their duty… And it was the start of 400 years of the fall of Rome. In the age of instant communications, that process is compressed and speeded up.
Elect another Republican and complete the downfall process… The Fall of the US as a Republic because its leaders no longer lead by example but just greed, corruption, decadence, bribery, “privatization”, blaming “illegals” and porous borders.
When the US dissolves into independent regions, we have no one to blame but ourselves.
I did my duty with the 82nd Airborne and 7th Special Forces… Nowadays, no draft, no duty. What kind of war is that?
And “Neo-conservatives”, you are reaping what you have sowed.

I agree with one reader … it is Clinton’s fault for not having the guts to do the right thing … instead he was too busy looking at his popularity polls and or playing with that woman Luinsky. This war is about our safety and the safety of future generations. As history has proven this country made a mistake in Vietnam by abandoning an ally. Today we pay the price in Southeast Asia and the world where allies wonder if we will stay the course. To repeat this mistake will result in future 911′s. To avoid this catastrophe we must pay the price of war … as history shown war is the price nations pay for freedom and safety. History is a valuable source of knowledge and wisdom. Sadly liberals are so ignorant when it comes to this wisdom. Our country’s founding fathers had the guts to make the ultimate sacrifice and go to war against the most powerful nation on the planet in order to have freedom. I doubt they would relate to and or appreciate today’s liberals.

Bill = RNC/FoxNews plant. Don’t buy into the insane, screechy astroturfing these people plant every time there is an article which shows how horribly the Bush team has bungled their civilian leadership of our military.

Unbelievable for ABC News to air this. Wha’ts wrong, the war isn’t going badly, so you’re out there FILMING attacks on our own soldiers?
I cannot believe you, Brian Ross. What’s wrong with you? On Veteran’s day, you, Brian Ross are helping those who want to kill American troops. If you were in Hugo Chavez’s Venezuela, you would be off the air by now.
The ONLY reason you’re free are those same soldiers you hate.

We were told at the beginning of this war to remove AQ and Taliban from control in Afghanistan, that it would be a long war. It is unlike any war we have experienced in any of our lifetimes. Islamist radicals will not be defeated in a year or two or five. It is not Clinton’s fault or Bush’s fault. This enemy is a creation of its own ideology. Simple slogans and name calling only divide us and and strengthen our enemies.
Our leaders and soldiers in the field are neither stupid nor incapable. They face a hate-filled, highly adaptive enemy drievn by an ideology of domination and violence. To think that if we just left, then things would be OK, is naive. We weren’t there before 9/11 and we still got hit. Inaction will only invite more attacks and give the terrorists a chance to develop more training facilities and resources.
We will adapt and we will overcome this, just we have every challenge. Hooah!

Please tell me how I can get a copy of “The Forgotten War”. My son is in the 173rd this is not a “Forgotten War” for us or any other family of the 173rd. Our beautiful son’s seeing horrors that no one should have to witness. I pray that August comes soon so we can all wake up from this nightmare.

When we (media, society) demand war as social work, we get this result.
Let the military do its job and win!

Everybody truly interested in the machinations going on with these traditionally duplicitious tribes needs to read a piece called “Tribes of Terror”, at The Claremont Institute website written by Stanley Kurtz.
This kind of thing is nothing new and has been routine for them among themselves let alone with foreigners, for generations.
My view is we need to offer them a clear choice: Either we mutually leave each other alone (traditional tribal life and western civ/America) or we will show you what unrestricted Western warfare means. The tribes of Waziristan is really the origin of all this. They could not stand against us if we got serious and made the sufficient committment.

All I can say is: If you don’t like this country, then get the hell out. I am sick and tired of blaming anyone and everyone for what has happened and is happening. I am also sick and tired of the “Media” for airing only the bad things that happen and not any of the good things. I think if you would survey some of the troops returning to the U.S, the majority of them would say we were doing a lot of good over there and the majority would return if the were told to do so. I bet a big majority of those doing most of the complaining, have never served in the military. I have served and if I wasn’t so darn old, I would be glad to serve again if asked to do. Maybe it is because I love the U.S.A.

Why is it that the media will tell us all about the six Service Men being killed but refuse to tell us of the enemy casualties? Could it be to demoralize us?
I have a friend whose son is a USMC Lt. Col. fresh from Afghanistan. During his tour there his SF outfit of 2,000 men lost 10 to enemy action while (confirmed) 3,984 Taliban were killed! Why don’t we hear that news?
I think I know why!

The problem with our military is that it is too risk-averse. If I (and a few men I know) could run the war in Afghanistan, there would be far fewer ambushes and far fewer infiltrators from Waziristan. This is VN all over again. Troops not permitted to take the battle to the enemy, Combattants masquerading as innocent civilians, the media portraying our military as discouraged…Blame the president…hippies (albeit grey and arthritic)…

I will not be watching and have encouraged all my friends and family to BOYCOT ABC and the parent company Disney until this kind of reporting stops! I hope the poor parents of these fallen heros miss this footage. My heart goes out to them and all who have lost a loved one. How about showing video of honoring our Veterans ABC?

It’s rather ironic that this is called the forgotten war….it seems the only time we will get more news coverage anywhere other than the streets of Iraq is when Americans are dying. MSM has a bias. Even if you do not agree with the reasoning behind the war…we are all in a war… and its high time all of the people whining politics on this board and in the news wake up and think of the aid and comfort they are giving the killers of American Troops… by putting forward the endless list of injuries done to America.
Freedom is not a little flower growing in a field somewhere in the midwest…it’s something that should be respected and worked for…sacrifices sadly must be made…but why in the hell is it that the only time half of this country stands up and cries foul, is when it furthers their political agenda? Stop crying… want it or not…War has come to America ….stand back and let our guys do their jobs… so they can come home.

Posted by: Shana | November 12, 2007, 5:38 pm 5:38 pm

So many of the comments here reveal an unfathomable ignorance of military history, world history, and American history. It’s embarrassing and discouraging. Forget for a moment your politics and/or personal agenda. Forget your bitterness of anger, and whether of not Afghanistan/Iraq have been mishandled. I have been to both, and have friends and loved ones who have been to both – and both are but two facets of a global war that many Americans apparently cannot grasp. War is a filthy, dirty, rotten, despicable thing that costs many lives and more humanity. Getting into one costs you much. Winning one costs you more, and you can never get it back – but it is far superior to losing one. I hate it with all my heart, but I am also quite sure what will happen if we do not fight and win it. I have shaken hands with more hooks and prosthetics than I can count, and know that we are far closer to the start of this conflict than we are to the end. We will have several presidents before it is done, and we would be wise to pray not only for the one we have now but the ones we will have. Frankly, I’m amazed that anyone would want that job – and regardless of whether the next president is named Clinton, Guiliani, Romney, Obama, etc, they will face the most gut-wrenching of decisions. And – as others have stated – we will never have the satisfaction of “knowing” that it is over. There will be no ceremony, no treaty, no armistice, and no parade…and it will continue beyond this generation. And those who suggest that we should simply “get out of it” display a lack of awareness that is as naive as it is breathtaking. It is not that kind of war, as only the soldier in it can understand. Thank you ABC for showing just a glimpse of the tremendous perils faced by the soldier in the field. If you haven’t the stomach to see for a moment what we face, remember – the luxury of turning away was puchased for you by those who face it every day. Soldiers have always been social engineers, and the reason they attempt to do such by peaceful means is the often fruitless hope that doing so will keep their rifle on their shoulder.

You fellow Americans are amazing! Thank you for your patriotic comments and whole-hearted support for our troops! My son is in Afghanistan with the 1-508th Airborne.
It appears to me that Sebastian Junger embedded with the troops so that he can come back home to team up with ABC (Brian Ross)& Vanity Fair(Tim Hetherington) for a lead in to the next book he is going to sell. Talk about blood on one’s hands!
Sebastian, if this turns out to be the case I would consider it less offensive if you donate all the profits to a relief fund for soldiers and their families.

After 9/11, President Bush rolled out the plan to go into Afganistan. In his address, he was very clear to the American people that the war on Terrorism wasn’t going to be easy and would take several years. He was clear that it would probably last beyond his presidency. He cautioned the American people to have resolve. He offered no promises of when the war on terriorism would end. Have we forgotten?

Until we fight a war like a war, stories like this will continue. The rules of engagement should to be changed to return any fire and kill the SOB with the gun! If possible shoot first!
Afghanistan is the worst of all worlds for us. They have a poor ignorant population who does not seem have a way out of their cycle of poverty. Our “friends” in the region would barely pass the smell test and our cooperation in the country dwindles daily. We need to either wrap it up and move on or go to our over 45 to 60 year old business people and pay them to get over there and start some companies!
JFK started the Peace Corps to spread the American values around the world, but they are not equipped to start business incubators in a war zone. The State Department should hire a group of business people to go over and start and aid companies in Afghanistan and Iraq. Once these companies are started and going bring the business people home. These people will have to be well paid but this would do more for the US than any guns, it creates jobs, businesses and most of all self pride. God instilled in all of us the desire to succeed. Bring out that desire and create the pride in success and things will change. Yes some of these business people will get sick or killed but most business people like myself who missed the draft and during the post Vietnam military did not want to get involved, now see that to change the world we have to be willing to sacrifice to help our nation.

Ok, I am a military wife. We belong to the 173rd and we lost 6 brave men this weekend! Now to honestly hear everyone bickering about this..OMG can you not understand…Right now the RIGHT thing to say is GOD BLESS OUR TROOPS and May our fallen soldiers rest in peace. Why bicker people. This is not helping our soldiers.
I want to say to all soldiers that We LOVE YOU and we are proud of what you do. We wish you safety and god speed in your missions. May you honor your fallen comrades everyday by remembering them and the sacrifice they have given! We hope to see you when you get back. Stay strong. In times of desperation, look unto your brother or sister in arms, and pray with them. Know that your families and friends think about you all everyday and are so thankful to have you defending us all!
Maybe, just maybe others can follow this example and forget about bickering and pointing fingers and just send our soldiers uplifting words, which obviously is what they need.
Take advantage of sending them a letter downrange to the address provided above, please it is so important to them to know that we love them! And as you saw many soldiers only recieve mail from collectors, which is really a disgrace.
To my husband: you are the best. You are an excellent soldier and I am always proud of you! To all the other soldiers, I am so very proud of you. Remember, stay strong!
LOVE ALWAYS
N…a military wife!

You and your families are TRUE American Heroes and we will never be able to repay you for your sacrifices.

Politics and alike are playing too much of a role in our wars. These things hinder soldiers jobs and leave them going on missions with their hands tied behind their backs. Being a veteran of OIF as an Infantryman I know what these guys are putting up with. In many instances soldiers are not even allowed to use anything above 5.56 ammunition (which is way to small anyway) without permission from a commander. After spending a total of over two years in Iraq doing combat missions, patrols, hits on targets, and even moving simply to make contact. I have felt the stresses and challenges they face. The silly rules of engagement, political involvement, and police action does not make the job any safer but puts troops in more danger and quite a few get into trouble for simply doing their job. At times I think that soldiers have two enemies, those individuals trying to fight and those that make silly rules and regulations leaving the soldier more vulnerable.

Judas Priest.. I can’t believe all the bull by people alledging that somehow the troops are being forced to fight with one arm tied behind their backs. Yes, yes.. we’re all supportive of our troops (My youngest son just returned from a tour in Afghanistan).. but people… it isn’t Hillary Clinton, Nancy Pelosi or the tooth fairy who’s whacking our forces. It’s the Afghanis… the same folks who bled the British Empire and the Soviet Union until they were white. Face it people… we’re damn lucky that as hard as the Afghans fight.. that they don’t have access to the billion dollar planes and million dollar missiles that our troops do.

Shame on the person who said these soldiers are just doing this for a paycheck. I’m pretty sure they could get a job like one of us in the States that paid better if they wanted.
My boyfriend is with the 173d in Afghanistan. So this is a bit more personal to me than it is to most of these liberals leaving hateful comments. Whoever made the decision to be there (and yes, it was more than 1 person) and for whatever reason, we are there. Lets be true to our country and support our troops that are there fighting for us. It is because of them that we are leaving these comments on this story. Thank your troops for allowing you to declare your opinion as you so proudly do. What a silly way to fight a war. Didn’t we learn anything in Vietnam? There’s no winning the hearts and minds of people while you are in their country with guns drawn. We can’t even muster up a majority in this country on any issue! Force and more force and then some more force are all that a radical force like the Taliban will ever acknowledge. In all theaters of operation we should be doing the following: #1) Kick out all media, all of them!
#2) Pick out 2-3 local “Elders” in every village that a patrol passes through and put them in the lead vehicle or on point. I’ll guarantee almost instant success. I don’t believe that it is the locals in most cases that want to “die” for this jihad of theirs, in most cases it’s the radical foreigners streaming into their country looking for a fight. I’ll bet within days of implementing this basic strategy the number of ambushes and explosive devices will be noticeably diminished and the number of foreign fighter either dead or on the run. Oh, did I mention expelling all media from the theater of operation?

I think it’s unfair to air this video when it makes it seem like the terrorists are winning. If you are going to air this, I think you need to air more footage of the us troops killing the enemy.
I know that the kill ratio is in the US’s favor, but you couldn’t tell by the coverage.
Keep rooting for enemies of the US and you may get a chance to live under the freedom the islamist extremists are offering.

How do you think the families of our troops feel when they see a news segment like this. You news people do not seem to have any thought as to what is right or wrong. Hey Nadine and everyone who thinks this is about us getting oil! If oil had anything to do with our involvement in Iraq, wouldn’t oil prices be LOWER now than before? The problem with pricing is that so-called environmentalists who, like everyone else, drive cars and trucks, don’t want US to drill or process our OWN oil, so we HAVE to get it elsewhere in the world, and the US government has an obligation to protect those interests we send to obtain it. Get real and grow up!

These Afghan villagers are dirt-poor farmers, worse off than the old Southern share-croppers. Their poppy fields destroyed, they are told to grow cotton. They grow cotton, but they lose money on the prices paid them. Cotton farmers are heavily subsidized here in the United States, driving down prices worldwide. They cannot even feed their children properly. Then we bomb them, because the Taliban comes to town. They can see the source of their miseries, and it is us. Of course they oppose us now.

Here is a question I have for ABC … and it would make a great investigative report. What happened to the release of the DVD of “The Path to 9/11″ that was supposed to take place 2 months ago?

Posted by: cobra36 | November 12, 2007, 9:17 pm 9:17 pm

No justification for this video to be shown to the public. Future access, of course. This footage, utilized correctly, may save lives, both military and civilian. ***Many leaving comments are in dire need of basic history on Afghanistan. Surprised Media gives little attention to our Allies (NATO)fighting alongside our troops. Read reports certain nations refuse hard missions, leaving dangerous areas to the USAF patrols.

Posted by: Mark | November 12, 2007, 9:29 pm 9:29 pm

I am wondering at the quality of this reporting when a wounded soldier pictured is identified as a “Gunnery Sergeant,” a rank which does not exist in the US Army, but does in the US Marine Corps. How many other details are glossed over or just wrong? How can we trust the analysis of the situation when reporters are ignorant of basic facts about the military? We can complain about a long war and blame President Bush for it, but after being in Afghanistan for over 6 years do you think someone from ABC would be able to learn the rank structure of the US Army?

Posted by: eric | November 12, 2007, 9:33 pm 9:33 pm

Blame the USA and Bush for the situation in Afghanistan sure, but how convenient for everyone to ignore NATOs incompetence. Getting more troops for NATOs contingent is like pulling teeth. Why does the USA have to police the world? Because no one else will.

You can’t fight an intellectual war.. Pull ALL our troops home & NUKE them! Bush definitely botched this by going in half assed, but Clinton did absolutely NOTHING after the U.S. was attacked!

Everybody truly interested in the machinations going on with these traditionally duplicitous tribes needs to read a piece called “Tribes of Terror”, at The Claremont Institute website written by Stanley Kurtz.
This kind of thing is nothing new and has been routine for them among themselves let alone with foreigners, for generations.

Another traitorous piece by the media.Born to lose, and dedicated to the deaths of fellow Americans. The media would rather film American soldiers being ambushed than warning the American unit and losing a story.
I don’t know how these people live with themselves.

Thank you for showing this information to the general public. I was with the herd in Iraq and Afgh. in 05-06 now I am enjoying civilan life. But many of my brothers and dearest friends are still in the unit over there. For that I say thank you. Now for the people that didn’t like the show and about what going on over in combat: just a little reminder that war isn’t people throwing rocks at each other, and war isn’t nice; people give there lives for a cause and people die. Thats war! The boys over there are doing a heck of a good job and need to know that even if you don’t support the war in Iraq and Afgh. at least support our troops because that’s what they need. Final note the guys over in combat here in some way or another how americans protest and dishonor what they do. those people should go and fight for our country and see how that feels.

I too have a son in the 173rd. Is there any way that I can also get a copy of the report???
I continue to pray for all of the men and women in Afghanistan and Iraq that are fighting in this war. We can also pray that there will be relief in the way of soldiers being relieved from Iraq and then able to shorten the duties of the remaining.

YOUR COVERAGE IS A SHAME!!! I watched your piece tonight on the new section and couldn’t believe the takeaway you were trying to portray: 1) Afghanistan is the only place we fight Al Qaeda 2) No one cares about the war there 3) Our soldiers bomb civilian areas, kill innocent civilians, then argue with the locals 4) When we do go and fight the “insurgents”, and they kill our troops, we run and cry …is this the lengths to which Vanity Fair and ABCNEWS will go to discredit our nation’s call to fight terrorist groups? to fight intolerance and extremism? to defend our nation from terrorists? This is a sick, grotesquely biased and pathetic hit-job on the finest soldiers in the world, against the greatest country in the world.

Well, I just saw the Nightline piece. It lived up to my expectations of bias. It gets so exhausting to be right all the time. If they had mentioned enemy casualties even one time I would have been thrilled, but no. All doom and gloom, all negative, all hopeless, all the time. No context, no perspective.
It was horrible seeing our guys getting killed, but you would think that we are having no effect on the enemy who in reality has lost many thousands of men, usually dozens at a time in every engagement, to minimal losses, if any, on our side. What they showed was a lucky ambush for the Muhammadans who usually end up slaughtered every time they try with nothing to show for it.

Have people nothing better to do than complain about everything? We ARE at War and we are LOSING lives but when was there a war when lives weren’t lost? If our troops need anything it is positive criticism not constantly telling them that putting there lives on the line for our freedom is a fraud! This IS war and WE are ALL apart of it. Nothing your gonna say is going to change a thing so enough with the whining and complaining about frivolous crap and contribute to your country, BE AN AMERICAN! SUPPORT -OUR- TROOPS, not theirs!

First of all, if we’re fighting the Al-Que-Da, who the hell is supplying them with the forces? Where are they getting their weapons if Pakistan is our supporter and Afganistan is supposely helping us? Who’s is funneling the finances for the Al-Que-Da to fight? If they don’t have any supporters, how the hell do they have weapons? We need to find out who is financing their supplies and cut it off and see if they have weapons to shoot at us.

Finally, one of the big three got out past Bagram and Kandahar to report on Afghanistan. It’s only been forgotten because of you, American media. All other countries are deep inside ‘the suck’ and their people know about it.
Now, someone has to report on the border and how it isn’t manned by Pak Mil, but by Wazari Frontier Corps who let foreign fighters across, and even take them in as they limp their way back east across the border after one of our engagements. That’s a story to show the country. OBL isn’t inside Afghanistan, so tell the full story of what units are accomplishing over there.

I find it really laughable that those who always use the “support our troops” mantra are also those who support a administration which is more interested in keeping war the American export to the world, who support a administration which doesn’t think that children need healthcare, that the sons and daughters are fighting in the middle east “for their freedom”, ad nauseum…..and this story just proves my point…..being ex-millitary myself, it made me sick that these soldiers are dying for nothing more than a madman occupying the oval office telling them to “die” because he wants it! You supporters of this administration are no diffrent than those who supported Hitler during his rise in Germany so many years ago; blinded with hatred of things and people diffrent from you, you espouse hatred and worship your American version of Htiler like he was a god or something! Perhaps since you support this morally reprehensible administration and their action to take the oil out of the Middle East via force, then YOU should go and fight in your Furher’s war! The piece by Nightline showed you what war really is about; people dying for a honorless reason on bothy sides………
And still some of you wave the flag, spout the republican party line, and think that bush is without blame for his almighty holy war against a imagined enemy at the costs of brave men who are just following orders given to them by those who just don’t really give a damn.

First I’d like to say I’m sorry for those whom lost loved ones on soil that wasn’t USA soil! So my condolences to all of you!
I can understand why it’s called the “Forgotten War”. So much emphasis is being placed on Iraq that the media has a tendency to not reflect so much attention on the actions in Afghanistan. I don’t want to sound nor seem none patriotic, but what make us as Americans think we can accomplish what the Russians couldn’t achieve after occupying that territory for 10 years. After a 10 year occupation they ran out with their tails between their legs. At that time the Russians possessed the technology to win as we do at the present, but the terrain there isn’t our friend because the locals know how to use it to their benefit as the Viet Cong did in their jungles. The mentality we have is what gets us killed sometimes; that pride. As a parent I’d rather do as the Russians then to have to endure the pain and suffering of losing a child for a senseless war without end. This so-called war on terror is breaking us to the point to where China will become the next reigning super power, especially if they modify their way on human rights. Many Americans aren’t aware that we are borrowing money from China to finance this continued fight on terror in that region. Our grandchildren will suffer dearly for what the current administration has done. The declining value of the dollar and poor export of U.S. produced goods are just a sample. The Chinese are sending us poisoned goods in lead form; foods & toys. So who do we need to really watch!
Remember terrorist comes is all colors, shapes, sizes, nationalities, backgrounds and etc. So my point is that there will always be terrorist. Just think of Timothy McVeigh as an example.
So America wake up and focus on the real things that are affecting us; the Katrina aftermath, better health care, building schools, gun control, border protection, crime, and some other issues. It’s a disgrace that after so much time some areas hit by Katrina are still in disarray and we have border patrol agents in prison for stopping a guy coming across the border with drugs. They were doing their public service. I bet the president will grant Scooter Libby a pardon, but will forget those agents in prison.
By the way I did 3 tours in Iraq and thank God I returned in one piece each time!

I have been reading up on Michael Moore and his book “Will They Ever Trust Us Again” and let me tell you I am sick to my stomach to see how many of our military men and women are discusted with BUSH and his terroristic mind, if any one is the enemy it is him , Why doesn’t ABC and Michael Moore do a documentary of how the soldiers really feeland report of true conditions they are living in and EXPOSE this war for what it is all about MONEY AND GREED and not from the teliban but from our own government , We elected a bunch of hypocritical jerks and money hungry back stabbing thieves and then put the bill on all those who voted them in. We are paying for this war through our tax dollars and in turn are losing our families for their gain. Funny how 1 man who never stepped foot in a military life knows so much about military ways ….Wake up America you have been so brainwashed by BUSH and it is time to admit you made a mistake in believing him , look from the outside in and take off your rose colored glasses , as long as him or and one of his puppets on a string are in charge this world will be doomed for future generations , His daddy made sure he got in and look at what disaster they both have caused with out any remorse what so ever to all the lives lost , the news spend days on certain situations or a horrible tradegdy but come on don’t you think OUR service people deserve just as much air time , they are the ones living in constant fear everyday, and to me that is worth more then just an article here and there or an obituary in a local paper…THIS IS REAL NEWS HAPPENING 24/7 TIME TO MAKE THIS TOP NEWS EVERYDAY UNTIL IT IS OVER.Maybe if the MEDIA would really show the AMERICAS what is going on then enough will get sick and tired of the the double talking political backstabbers who tell us everything is ok when it is not … show the real scenes and not what our gov. will allow to be aired, get a set of kahunas like Michael Moore and tell it like it is ….WE AMERICANS DESERVE TO SEE OUR LEADERS FOR WHAT TEHY ARE REALLY ABOUT AND TIME TO MAKE A CHANGE TO BRING OUR TROOPS HOME, if we had such great security here in USA then bringing them home would not be a risk to Americans the risk is this BUSH knows damn well it is better to lose a few service men in some other country then to risk losing his investments here. SHAME ON YOU .In my eyes you are no more than a murderer … and you have lost all respect from half your military men and women who call you Commander in Chief I call you Commander the THIEF……. Remember it is home of the FREE because of the BRAVE ……and NOT because BUSH makes it that way….what really kills me is this our service men took and oath to protect the constitution THEN TELL ME WHAT DOES ANY OF THIS WAR HAVE TO DO WITH THAT ?
And to protect our country from all foreign and domestic threats so how do they protect us FROM YOU MR BUSH ? MAY GOD HAVE MERCY ON YOUR SOUL AND MAY GOD BLESS ALL THOSE WHO PROTECT IT FOR YOU.

Eric,
I think what they mean by “Gunnery Sergeant is the NCO our soldiers know best as “Gunny”! We have them too, maybe not know as “Gunnery Sergeant” but definetly as Gunny. And I think that is what they were referring too! Trust me on this, the footage and “details” were very accurate. I have seen these soldiers, I know their ranks and jobs for the most part. Yes, these same exact soldiers too. For we are attached to them! They might use “big terms” for some things here, but they have been very accurate.
But thanks for paying enough attention.

Doesn’t it all boil down to “lets get the hell out of there, and worry about defending our own country”?
Oh yeah some would say “but that’s why we are there dummy”, but let me ask those people this: “If someone attacked your home and family, would you leave it and go to another country to defend it, or would you stand on your OWN front porch and fight!?”
Who cares anymore about ‘why’ we went over there. Oil, Politics, Greed, 9/11 or the Desire to RULE the World. All we need is to BRING OUR SOLDIERS HOME, and focus on protecting our homeland. It would cost alot less I’m sure. Not to mention our men and women would be home (and safer).
We aren’t wanted there, we can’t ‘fix’ a country that doesn’t want to be fixed.
My son is about to turn 18 and he has joined the Army. I’m terrified that he will be sent over to die. Although I back him all the way in what he wants to do. But couldn’t he serve his country just as well by staying and defending our country here? ABSOLUTELY!
My prayers are for all the soldiers, their families and our country. COME HOME SAFE!

I wish ABC would air this special during PRIME TIME!!!!! Yes, it’s terrible what was shown and yes, I had great difficulty sleeping last night. But perhaps those who believe we should be there and those who really aren’t aware of what is going on need to see something like this for it to hit home and realize we don’t need to be there. I lived through one Vietnam and sure hoped I nor my children would have to live through another one. Show it on PRIME TIME please!!!! God bless all of our military.

I have a son in Afghanistan 173rd 2nd Battalion, and I am proud to say that at least he is doing what he believes in fighting for OUR freedom ( not for oil ) but the sad part is this he never signed up to be a puppet on a string for our wonderful Gov. He took an oath to defend our Constitution ( and seems to be every politicain wants to re write that) and to protect from all foreign and domestic allies well seems to me that we have one right here our commander in chief so who is going to protect us from him . People you have to sooner or later wake up and realize that this is a war based on “politics” it is all about the almighty dollar and who has bigger balls and to win a war that is not winnable this year or in the years to come . Is it really worth losing our family over this? I say we need to reconstruct our own country before we try to take over another… take a look at all the evil here in good ol USA that is what our forefathers had in mind was to protect our great land and to make it a safe place to be and a country to be proud to call home , as of right now I can not say I am proud to live in such a place that is more screwed up than any other country.( and that is only by elected officials) But I am damn proud to have a son doing what it is he chose to do the unfortunate part is he never expected his own Commander in Chief to turn his back on him . Time to bring our troops home and protect USA , if we have a military that is so strong then defending us from US soil should not be a worry to us, but I do not think we have what is takes to keep us safe here, 9/11 ring a bell ? The only one question I have is this ..If US is such a target then why haven’t there been more attempts to distroy us here on our soil, instead we are tearing up other countries and killing innocent people at the expense of what? We are pissing off countries that do not want us there so why do we stay? Bottom line is OIL making more bang for the buck , it is not hard working citizens who are benefiting from this by any means we are PAYING the price to keep our Gov. in luxuries and increasing prices for everything we need to survive ,all this is going to do is drive us right into a depression but in the mean time all those higher up will never feel the pinch …do you realize that our soldiers make about 3 grand a month to literally put their life on the line while these who make such radical decissions are making 5+ figures a month and billing it to you guessed it tax paying American citizens and sitting behind protected walls . What fools we are . Once a soldier is no longer of use they are forgotten( check out VA hospitals and homeless ) but yet we still have to look at faces that could careless what becomes of us , so long as they still get what they need to survive, we as the voters have the power to make the changes happen but as long as you sit on your butt and complain nothing changes …. time to stand up and speak out after all it is us who give them that power so why should we be forgotten after election time is over, if we have the right to vote in a person we should have the right to get them out! If all Americans stood up and spoke out I am sure we would here more say tiem to end the war then those that say stay but what news crew would ever show that on TV , what news crew has the guts to show what realities it is our troops really are in and what news crew has the balls to show how our eleceted officials really live … we have so many reality shows on TV today what about a reality show of how it really is and not how they want us to see it OPEN the eyes to Americans and show them that those they support are not who they think they are. I think Jaon Lunden did a show called “Behind Closed Doors” bring it back this time on our Gov. let us hear what is actually said and show how they could give a rats $%* about us and once Americans hear that perhaps it will change their minds before elections come around again. Time to TREAT our military with the respect they deserve and stop putting our GOV on a pedistool after all it is those men and women who make the ultimate sacrafice not BUSH or his croonies. I say Vote Michael Moore for President so far he is the ONLY ONE who has the guts to show the real truth and to those that hate him it is because YOU KNOW HE IS RIGHT !

I am a proud spouse from Battle Company 2nd platoon, I want to thank ABC for putting light “our forgotten war”. Our men over there are doing a hell of a great job!! We’re proud of you! Battle Hard Boys!!
I also want to say to all soldiers that We LOVE YOU and we are proud of what you do.
Thank you ABC for sharing our story.
Although i do agree with someone saying not to show our fallen brother. In respect, this is a hard time for us all.

First off, I just got back from Afghanistan in March 07. I was at the KOP (Korangal Outpost) for 4 1/2 months embedded with the Afghan Army as a “trainer” (actualy more like a combat advisor). In that time my team alone logged more then 200 engagements ranging from single sniper shots to full on attacks with rockets and heavy weapons. The article is 90% accurate in that the locals in that valley hate us (and any outsiders) and are about 95% fully commited to our enemy. That area is the stereotypical “backwoods West Virginia” of Afghanistan and they hate all outsiders including their own government.
The bottom line folks is that if you want America to win these wars then back up, shut up, and let us FIGHT. We can’t do our job if we are the “Peace Corps with Guns”. If you don’t want America to win then give back the freedoms that we have fought died to give you and go elsewhere (or just drop dead for all I care). And if you are militarily ignorant…..SHUT UP and talk about something you do know about. (Ramon Padilla above)
Either way, our failures are not Bush’s, Rumsfelds(neither one a favorite of mine), or any other one persons, or parties, fault. The failings lie in an America that is only concerned with the appearance of action rather then actual accomplishment. Let go of the “All Form – No Substance” culture and we can be a great nation again.
-For all of you above who have been there……..WELCOME BACK and God Bless.
-For those on the way…….Good Luck and an even bigger GOD BLESS. OP1 keep your head down and your IBA on.

Has everyone forgotten that it is the Taliban that attacked us on our soil? This video is about Afghanistan, not Iraq. They are 2 very different wars but everyone always lumps them into one category.

Dear Viper 28
God bless you that you are home and in 1 piece, but let me say this you support what it is you believe in and I will support what I believe in and that is to back out of this war…. I totally agree with the woman that said would you run to another country if your family was being attacked …. No I would stay and fight til my death to protect my family … but the problem is I can not go and fight until my death to protect my son who is over there where he does not belong to begin with, we need to stop sticking our noses in places it does not belong PERIOD ….. ever hear the saying let sleeping dogs lie? SO far we have not had any major attacks on our soil since all events on 9/11 so tell me why we need to attack theirs? We cried out how many innocent children died that day and countless firemen and police officers …well what about those same dying over there at our bloodied hands? Aren’t we doing what it is we hate so much from the terroist attack on us ? We are a country that needs to take care of our own FIRST and here on our soil ,we have terrorist right here that our own government can’t even detect … and for the most part they are government so don’t you think we need to get them out and take control of USA ? If we have such great military then we should feel no threat to defend Americans from American soil. What good is Air Force if they can not protect our skies and what good is Navy is they can not protect our seas and what good is Army and Marines if they can not protect our borders? DO you not think it would make more sense to keep out what is already coming in and deal with the rest as it happens , we are focusing so much on other countries wanting to destroy us that we are forgetting what we already have in here.
I have no respect for BUSH or any of his butt kissers , and time others see through his false heart for us , if he was true to America then he would bring home what means more to us than OIL those who took that oath to protect this great land …. ASk your self this one question how many lives must be taken and how much money must be spent to win ? One other question if President Bush was told that NO one country would EVER attack or even threaten us ever again if all he had to do is stand on the line of fire and risk dying for USA would he do it? I think not …so you tell me how much he loves America

Bonnie
I will pray for you and your son , my son is over there in same , and as I sit here his picture is the wallpaper of my computer holding a machine gun and he looks so sad , 22 years ago I would never have thought that that is the one picture I would treasure more than any of him growing up! There is a song by Lynard Skynard that I use to sing to him when he was little at that time he was my only son , I now have 3 more children a son 18 daughter 16 and a son 14 and I would never endorse the military to any of them , we see what our boy is in and it breaks my heart to think that his life is on the line , everytime I play that song and I play it often I think of what those words mean.
I know my son has become just that “a simple kind of man “, it is really ashame his life will be changed forever due to what he lives in everyday. I pray each and everyday for God to spare his life and all those involved in such a senseless situation, I pray for all those over there that have no choice but are victums of circumstance , and I pray that perhaps one day we will have a president who has morals and faith and rebuilds our country on the spiritual principals we were founded upon…. Greed, selfishness and self centerness has taken over those in power and at the expense of neive people like our voters and military people who were promised a good life with good benefits…. I believe that Military people should be the ones being paid top dollar after all it their life that is on the line , not the politicans who stand in the backround hiding behind bodyguards and bullet proof vests, funny how they aer more secure them those fighting for our freedom , all tehy want to is to maek sure it is not their rear that gets blown up to be able to collect a pension that over rides any military person will ever see. Time to give to those that deserve it and take from those that abuse it.
God Bless you and all Military families ….and for governement May God give you what you deserve on judgement day ….

If Bill Clinton would have taken care of business outside of the bedroom we might have gotten Osama. 9/11 would not have happened and Saddam could have been taken out too. Now we have the Clintons again approaching the White House. Why is it that Americans are always having to clean up the mess that the Liberals leave????,,,,think about it Lyndon Johnson, Jimmy Carter, Bill Clinton, need I say more. No wonder why fine Democrates like Joe Leiberman and Zell Miller had enough of the Moveon.organ group. Republicans and Democrates should be ashamed of saying “Support Our Troops” and the Government and the VA do everything to create a nightmare when they get ill or injured. Why doesn’t America rise up and call their Congreesmen and Senators and the White House and say ….pass MANDATORY FUNDING for the VA. That is what real support our troops mean. Also, send Bill and Hillary over to Iraq and Afganistan, the war would be over quickly because they would sell America to them for a few dollars and Bill would like to peak behind the girkas the women wear.

I think it’s sad that some of you are making comments about the fact that your children are going over there and they shouldn’t have to because it wasn’t our fight, etc.
It seems many of you have forgotten that your sons and daughters signed up for the war and it was their choice. Rather than complaining about why they shouldn’t have to go, why don’t you support them and their decision to want to help so many people.
I have friends and family members who enlisted in the military specifically for the reason that they wanted to go over there and fight for our country and the countries we’re in.
Whether you are for or against the war, we all have people over there that we love and care about. We need to support them!
Who cares what Bush has or hasn’t done. It is what it is. Instead of complaining about everything, take the time to send a letter to one of our service men and/or women. When you see one of them in a store, work, etc., take the time to walk up to them, shake their hand and tell them thank you! Without them, our country would be a much scarier place. It’s time you stop making the negative comments, complaints, etc. and do something positive with it.
Showing our service men and women and their families and friends that we support them, is the best way to do that!

Dear Nichole
yes my son did CHOOSE this life and he also was told that he would never see a day in battle good recruiting there…. And as for support you have no idea just how many parents, wifes freidns and family memebers have sent dozens of care packages for things that OUR men and women need , that should be supplied by our government… We have to send things like flea powder, flea collars, socks, baby wipes, tissues, toilet paper and the list goes on and on , even food so you tell me what we should do next to support them ? Perhaps suit up and go fight . It costs us money to send these packages and for the most part half of them are not even recieved by the soldiers, bet that part was not seen on ABC or any news cast, letters do not reach half these soldiers who are over in Afghanistan, so how do we support them if they can not geet what it is we send … it costs for a flat rate box that fits perhaps 3 things in 8.75 per box and to send a foot locker of supplies it cost per pound the last one I sent over to my son was back in the first week of October and he still has not got it…. I bet our families think we forgot them how sad is that . The pick and choose who gets mail and who does not , or hold it for weeks at a time , I do understand that some of these guys are in places they can not even get mail so tell me how do you send your support then ? Our lovely gov. should not charge ANY price to send a care package to Iraq or Afghanistan or better yet how about spending the trillion of dollars to give our troops what they need… one woman wrote in a forum that she needs sanitary supplies can you imagine that ? They need care packages sent in over whelming loads because half of them do not even have soap. My son when deployed over there had not had a shower in 5 weeks let me see you go that long, we take for granted all we have here and don’t even think of the deplorable situations they are living in. SO next time you go to the store how about picking up a few things to send over to them to cut the cost we have to pay to keep them with reminders of home.

For all the warriors who posted here, thank you for everything you do.
For all the families of warriors who posted here, I wish you strength and stoic bravery until your loved one comes home.
For the families and friends of those who lost their warrior, I extend my utmost sympathy and sorrow and greatfulness for the sacrife that I recognise as being for me and my family and friends.
For all readers of this, if you want to learn some essential information about the enemy in Afghanistan and why it is in fact, our fight, you need to read a piece called “Tribes of Terror”, at The Claremont Institute website written by Stanley Kurtz.

I agree, there should be no charge for postage to Iraq of Afghanistan, or for any APO or FPO or other military station. However, I think the cost of a care package or a simple stamp is a small price to pay in comparison to what we get in return from all of these brave men and women. If you don’t know someone personally over the send packages too, I’m sure someone that is close to you does. Get the names of people in their unit. Any little bit helps. Please don’t use the excuse that these things might not even make it there.
As for the mission, the soldiers over there fighting this war HAVE to believe in the mission in order to get through each and every day. No matter what your stance is on the government, politics, people in charge or who’s at fault, these soldiers need to have the support from the people that they are out there fighting for. And if you think it doesn’t make a difference in your life either way then you are dead wrong. You say well there haven’t been any attacks on US soil since 9/11…well…we must be doing something right.
God bless all of the troops out their fighting for each of our rights. Including the right to voice our opinions on message boards such as these. Every soldier who signed up for the military did so voluntarily no matter what that recruiter promised them. It’s a shame that people with loved ones fighting over there can’t be more supportive. If your son or daughter or husband or wife believes in the mission, please respect that and support THEM instead of focusing all of your energy on placing blame.
God bless the 173rd. I pray every day for my fiance and his commrades and the families friends of those who have lost their loved ones.

Yeah and it just so happens miss Army Mom that theres a war going on. So if your child signed up and didnt expect to go to war, you were a little ignorant there werent you. Quit whining while my friends are dying for you. We got everything we needed, this isnt WWII, your views are blurred by the angst you have cause your son is there and not home with you. I been 3 months without showers, months without mail and never a day without food. Its war, it sucks, get over it.

I am a proud parent of a 173rd soldier who was shot in the Oct 2 ambush that was mentioned in the article. I am not sure how I feel about seeing this on TV tonight but I do know our forces need to be there to bring terrorism under control in this area. America needs to know that they are there to prevent another 9-11. I have two boys active army, the other is in Iraq right while my injured son is recovering in Germany til he can return to his unit. Thank-you for letting America know they are giving up alot and living under terrible conditions to protect our freedom.

Please let me know how I can obtain a copy of this Nightline special. My boyfriend is in the 173rd Airbore currently serving in Afghanistan. He has worked closely with the 2nd Platoon and knows many of the soldiers that were shown on the special. He as well as those around him have expressed that they would like to have a copy of this special sent to them. I would really like to do this for them. Please help me.

As many others, if there is a way I could obtain a copy of this video, I would like to purchase one.
As Ms Robin Ward, I to have a son serving in the 173rd Airborne Brigade, C Company, and regardless all the opinions if this war has any logical reason or not, I pray for my son’s safe return back and for each of the sky soldiers out there. I respect everyone’s opinion, but honestly, I do not see any progress in our progress in our home country by having our boys being killed on a daily basis by others who do not appreciate their help or their presence. These boys do need to come home. In the meantime, while I do not support this war, I am proud and grateful of our troops.
And for those that do not support and do not stand behind our troops, you can go to Afghanistan and stand in front of them. Thank you Sky Soldiers and may God Bless you all.

God Bless our troops! You are fighting for us, your family and friends. This is FACT. All other opinions stated above….well, they are just opinions! Ignorant ones, mostly!
To the 173rd, BATTLE HARD! You are always thought of and are never forgotten.
WAKE UP AMERICA!! Stop burying your heads in the sand….this is reality….this is what is happening over there and these are the men and women that are fighting FOR YOU AND I!! This is what they see everyday! There is nothing political about this….just SUPPORT OUR TROOPS and shut your mouth with your negative, political comments! It is what it is! THANK YOU SOLDIERS AND FAMILIES of this war and past wars! You have sacrificed so much and I appreciate every last one of you!

I am a military wife, sister, and friend. My husband is in Chosen Company of the 2/503rd. He was injured on August 22nd along with 10 others. Today we found out that his best friend and the man that saved his life was one of the men killed on November 9th. As a dedicated military wife and and an American citizen, I feel the need to get a few things off my chest.
For all those out there who find it necessary to bitch and complain, Who do you think makes it possible for you to bitch and complain? Stop your whining and stop the finger pointing. Maybe Bush isn’t the best leader in the world, maybe someone else could have done it better, but he’s what we’ve got. He did what he thought best for our country, your country. He’s human, no human being is perfect. He’s the leader of our country, have a little respect.
If you don’t support the war, fine, but at least support and respect our soldiers. Quit walking around saying that the war is wrong. That isn’t going to help matters. The soldiers don’t want to come back to those comments. All it does is make them think that everything they went over there for and everything they did and fought for was for nothing. They would and do lay down their lives everyday for you to disrespect them. What do you do for them?
And for God’s sake, support our brave men and women! Don’t just stick a yellow ribbon magnet on your car and call it good. There are plenty men and women serving our country that dont’ have the support and love of their own family. Some of them have nothing but the military and their country. There are plenty of programs out there to help the American public to support our troops. Send a letter once ever few weeks, send a care package, send pictures of something, anything, volunteer at a military hospital. Let them know you care and that it’s not for nothing.
Quit walking around thinking that the war is a million miles away and that it doesn’t effect you. It does. It effects every single person in this country in one way or another. You sit in your air conditioned buildings, eating three times a day, pointing fingers asking who did it….. I ask you….. What have you done for your country today?
Quit disrespecting your country and the men and women who fight for it and your rights. Have a little pride. If you consider yourself to be “anti-war” you are Anti-America, and you need to get the hell out of this country because you dont’ deserve this freedom. War happens, peace and love for all humanity is for little kids and beauty pageants. Get over yourselves. You all make me sick and will get what’s coming to you.
On the other hand, for all of you real American citizens, who do support your troops, thank you. Thank you for your help in supporting the fine troops of our country. Thank you for having pride and respect for your country.
On a final note, I am so proud of my husband and brother and all the men and women they serve with. The troops of the 2/503rd are a great group of very brave and courageous people.
So now I ask you again, what have you done for your country today?

I think this was the most riveting, heart wrenching war video I’ve seen since going to war in Afghanistan and Iraq. It surely showed in black and white what we, our soldiers, are up against…..the pain and agony our soldiers suffer all too frequently while we at home go through our daily routines and everyday complaining without giving a thought what they are going through. God bless them and protect them and bring them safely home. I will always hear the cries of that grieving, heartbroken soldier. May the arms of angels surround and comfort him.

Thank you NightLine for airing this piece. I would like to get a copy of this article.
Sarah S. you said a mouth full. We feel the same as you and we feel that we could not have said it any better ourselves.
I am a prior military man as my brother and my father. All of you that are anti war and anti american should pack your gear and move to another country. We should support our Commander and Chief right, wrong or indifferent. We all took an oath in the military of our own free will to defend and obey orders that are given. What the hell have you done other then speak your peace, a right that all our troops are fighting for. Freedom comes with a price be it here or overseas. If you are so mad then enlist and show it. WAIT you can’t because you are cowards! I had a very, very close friend that we just laid to rest one week ago “SPC Hugo V. Mendoza”. He was part of the 173 Airborn 1st platoon and was killed in the same valley that the film was made in. His family and my family and people all over the United States know that every soldier man, woman, brother, sister, father, mother, uncle, and aunt that is in the military serving our great nation is there for a reason. We are proud to call them family members and friends. They are All HEROES in my book. We need to support all our troops and not let them see the ignorant things that some of you have written.
GOD SPEED TO ALL OUR TROOPS WHEREVER THEY MAY BE!

He chose to support our country and I wish more people realized what these young men are doing for us. I really would like to have a video of this to show our families and friends what our son is doing for our country. Mike and Sarah
First off let me say this , freedom of speech is wonderful thing don’t you agree, and as for me complaining and bitching as you put it, I am airing my opinion which everyone has if you do not agree with it so be it…. As for what part have I played in this let me tell you…I have worked with my township to sponsor a benefit( which by the way will be twice a year until they are home) for soldiers who are in the war and for those who were injured to help with financial needs and to send care packages to ALL in the service , to date we have raised over $17,000 dollars and we even got Wal-Mart to match dollar for dollar, we are also doing a fund rasier to help donate Christmas gifts to soldiers families, so I guess you can say I am doing my part here in USA to help support all troops in the war whether in Iraq or Afghanistan makes no difference to me , as for packages being sent some do not make it across to these men so somewhere out there people are taking mail and packages from OUR troops how sad is that but I guess they need it more, It is a shame that people would actually steal from these men and women and take their personal belongings which we send to give them reminders of home, so I do not need to hear I am bitching about paying for a package, Our government should see to it that these men and women get what is rightfully theirs and it should be at no cost. We try to keep their spirits up and when they are expecting apackage and get nothing I am sure it is a big let down . The problem is not while it is in the states it is once it leaves our country that things are being “lost” funy do not know how a foot locker weighing 66.6 pounds gets lost but again I guess someone out there has no concious. AS far as being Anti American my whole family was and still is military so I have seen more than anyone’s share of it. And I do not have to agree with any of it , my God given rights and if I am not allowed to voice my opinion then perhaps there should be a place where I can voice it!I stand behind my son 100% for who is he and who he has become at least he is not standing on some street corner selling drugs, robbing your home or just being a plain ol bumb, I pray I raised him better than that and regardless of the outcome no matter what happens I always be proud to be his mother. Good bad or indifferent. All I am trying to say is this these men and women see this war much differently then we do being they live it daily and to be of such young ages to experience what tehy are most of us will never see in a lifetime… do I blame my son for being in the Army NO WAY but I do blame who ever pissed off these countries to the point that they feel it must be resolved in a war. When we were little our parents taught us that fighting never solves anything and sometimes it is better to walk away , so when do you draw that line? How many lives must be lost to prove you won? Must is always be about winning …And the reason why no one has attempted another plot on us is more involved then just we must be doing something right…. time and time again it was requested by these countries just get out of here and leave us alone , so instead we stay and cause more harm and mainly to innocent people .These terrorist are not here killing anymore of us so why do we need to stay and kill any of them , or our own ? And it is political no matter what anyone thinks , cause f had nothing to do with politcs we would not be there. I do not know how many parents or family members get phone calls from their loved ones but I do and I hear what I hear and I see pictures and if you think it is not horrible conditions and if you do not think there is so much we really do not know then you are really blind, you hear what we are to hear and you see what we are to see , if the real story was shown I think your opinions would change . From a parents point of view no one wants to see any child in this situation , but as any job I do understand it has risks , you are making me out to be nieve or not well informed , but you see you are dead wrong, like I said coming from a military backing I do know from WW1 to current, I have dozens of officers, captains and master sergeants in my family and even just servicemen and women so we hear many many view points but in all the years this one hits home most of all. My son called me last night from Afghanistan and he said that in the last week they lost 6 more guys and that if they lose any more they are going to be knee deep in crap , numbers are dwindling down and that means we either need more help or get out . No matter how much you think your loved one is for this inside they are scared to die period and I would not want for the life of me to ever have to see death they way they will and do . I had tee shirts made that say “God Bless Our Troops and on the back a picture of my son and below it says Home of the free because of the brave” I wore that out to Las Vegas and the responce I got was over whelming to the point I had mothers holding my hands crying and asking me to thank him…. My son could have been anything he wanted to be but he chose this and I will until the day I die forever be grateful he is who he became …. 173rd Airborne , you know I even sent letters to all his officers in Fort Benning thanking them for making my son the man he is today , tomorrow and until he is called home. I have never been more prouder..so please do not call me Anti American , because hands down I have and will continue to do more for these soldiers than most will ever think of doing. I am hosting a dinner with local military families so that at the holidays we can become one family as we all should be here. I will apologize if I pissed anyone off with my opinion but as an American I am entitled to my beliefs and thoughts .
May God Bless you ALL ….until then peace be with you .

Why would anyone believe Bush? He has always been lower than a snake. Lots of women are in the Armed Forces, why isn’t his daughters? I believe they should have the same chance of getting killed, by those who don’t want us there to begin with, as those men and women who have been over there protecting them and their father, who never cared about anyone but himself. Bush is so hated everywhere that he actually sneaks everywhere he goes. And don’t tell me all those soldiers love and care about him. They don’t. They have no choice but say that. They don’t think he is right anymore than anyone else does. And if anyone else cares that much about him, hurry and run to your nearest recruiting office and enlist. No? Why? Because you don’t want to become a statistic like all the others who have so selfishly given their lives so you might live. Every male in my family (14) of them, as well as my husband and son were in the service. But that was when they were fighting for a cause. What is the cause now?

Posted by: MomMom | November 14, 2007, 1:05 pm 1:05 pm

In many ways I agree with the ‘Forgotten War’ part, but don’t blame the media – WE determine what they cover…and all to often we live vicariously through the lives of people who don’t matter – Britney Spears, OJ Simpson…just to name a couple of CNN-staples. When we start asking for coverage of real news, the reporters will follow – because they and their sponsors know we’ll turn the channel. As a member of the military reserve system – I have a very real stake in this war and the one in Iraq. The Taliban win when we back out. Once again, democracy suffers; women are stoned for daring to show a wrist, an ankle – or heaven forbid- walk out of the house without a male escort. Can we truly sit back and watch that happen again? Maybe the answer is to cut back the troop numbers in Iraq and send them to Afghanistan. As another writer said, that’s where the Al-Qaeda came from who attacked us on Sept. 11. NOT Iraq.

Posted by: Carol | November 14, 2007, 1:17 pm 1:17 pm

Has anyone thought that maybe these village elders are scared of NOT helping the Taliban. These people over there live in fear. They help to build up their towns and create a better place to live by building toilets and helping supply running water or building roads and they get shot for it.

I would just like to say, I think this broadcast should be run in primetime, so every American has a chance to watch and experience what our troops are doing. How they survive, how they sleep (on dirt) what and how they eat. Where do they take showers??? or get to use the comforts of a real bathroom. Every single person in this country needs to watch this and quit complaining, look at these brave men are doing for us. I said I was NEVER going to complain again. I was safe (thank you TROOPS) warm, and with my loved ones. I felt guilty for enjoying my bed that nite. It really made an impression on me, one I will never forget. My father served in WW11 and is not alive for me to tell him how brave he must have been at such an early age…he never talked abt it, I never asked, I wish I had. I am very proud to say my father served his country like so many young people do today. They have my utmost respect…next time you see a serviceperson, how abt taking a few minutes out of your “busy” day and just say Thank you for serving…….I hope you think abt what the video message shows. Thank you ABC for opening the eyes of some people.
Thank you troops!
A very proud AMERICAN!!!!!!

Greetings,
Seeing this story was a big eye opener for me. My heart goes out to the troops over there. My condelences for the family and friends who lost their loved ones.
There was a part in the story when the soldeirs discovered a couple of their scouts killed. I remember seeing a soldier who was crying when he saw that his friend was killed and that he was blaming himself. I was wondering if you have any contact information of that soldier. I would like to talk to him and personaly give him my condolences. Thank you.

Why are we screwing around with those vermin? If I was in command and my men were repeatedly ambushed after trying to make peace with the elders of those villages, I’d call in the F-16s and blow them (and the Taliban and al Qaeda scum they shelter and support) right off the face of the planet. What about “civilian” casualties and “collateral damage,” you ask? I say: Save your sympathies for the survivors of the victims of 9/11. The pestilence we are fighting in that part of Afghanistan should be destroyed in a war of annihilation. Ditto the filth in the Pakistani tribal regions. Let’s fight to win (the way we did in Tokyo, Hamburg, Dresden and Hiroshima) and get it over with.

My brother was featured in this broadcast. He is the soldier who received the bill from the debt collector. I can not believe that he could and would receive this mail while he is fighting for his life everyday. I pray that he comes home safe. The stupidity of these debt collectors amazes me. I am glad this footage was aired on tv for those many americans who do not support our troops to see. Maybe they should realize that these brave men are fighting a war that they were not given a choice to be a part of. This is their job. Whether you are a supporter of the war or not, these men and women deserve your admiration. You are free to walk the streets, say what you want, when you want and to sleep in a warm bed at night while they sleep out in the cold on cots with no frigerator, microwave, etc. I am proud of my brother – I will admire him forever.

What is ABC calling this the forgotten war? I haven’t forgotten about it. It is ABC’s choice whether or not to cover it. It was they who haven’t been covering it, and with this lack of coverage THEY are the ones who have forgotten it. Now they are telling us that WE forgot it.
How RIGHT YOU ARE!!!
Only the internet has provided continuous coverage of what’s happening with our soldiers. I hope the liberal LameScreamMedia shrivels and dies. We don’t need their anti-American crap.

Thank you Lavonne, I really admire your brother also, they all are so very brave. My grandson is over there with them also, he tells me horror stories from that place, and the average citizen knows nothing about it, but I receive first hand everything. They had no idea what these soldiers endure on a daily basis. God Bless. Ronnie, MSG, USA (Ret)

I’ve read quite a few of the posts. I do not understand why people are saying it shows US soldiers as doing something wrong. Our guys were fired upon & returned fire. Some people (including children) were injured. How does this make us look bad? If the Afghani elders value their women & children, then don’t have them in a place where you’re firing on our soldiers from. If our soldier’s cry when one of their brothers is killed, how is this weak or wrong? You say this isn’t a true picture of what’s going on there? When were you there? Have YOU talked to a soldier who is there? I have. The stories are real, every single day, several times a day our guys are involved in fire fights. They go days with no sleep and keep fighting to protect the soldier next to them, to some day come home and see their families. I don’t know the answers as to how this war should be conducted or if it should have been started. But we’re there now. I’ve no military experience. I don’t want innocent people killed, and I claim to be a Christian, but when I know of our guys being killed, it breaks my heart & I get angry. I think things like “pull back the locals you know are good, and level the place”. But that’s not right either. I’ll leave it to the soldiers to fight for my freedom because I’m too old to go to war and do not possess the self discipline needed to NOT level a village regardless of women & children if someone there fires at me and/or kills my buddy. Our soldiers need our support. If you don’t want to support them, fine. But at least have the common courtesy not to play Monday morning quarterback and bad-mouth our troops. I’m glad ABC aired this show. Maybe it’s time people realized what’s happening. Those are the sons & daughters of this nation. If you can’t support them, then please, just keep your negative thoughts about them to yourself.

Thank you Sharon. As a fiance of a soldier with the 173rd in Afghanistan right now I really truly appreciate some of the kind words and support that have been left on this board.
Reading some of the negative posts on this board is upsetting. This is MY fiance, someone’s brothers and sisters, husbands, wives, fathers and mothers that you are talking about, not just faceless and nameless people out there killing with no regard. It’s insulting to both the families left behind waiting, hoping and praying for the safe return of their loved ones and to the ones that are out there fighting for your rights to live and be free and to voice your opinion.
I say this again, I am grateful that ABC aired this video. It gives everyone a little window into what these guys go through on a day to day basis.
Thank you ABC and Thank you soldiers, past and present, who have stood up and fought for our freedoms.

My son is part of that scout unit that found their sargeant killed after being ambushed (video – Part 3). While watching that video and seeing my son’s face was like getting a 1 – 2 bunch in my heart & gut. The loss of Sgt. Rougle (apologies of any misspelling of his last name)was huge hit to these guys–as you can clearly see and hear the one soldier’s emotional reaction. My son told me that Sgt. Rougle was a great leader and trainer. Our prayers and thoughts go out to Sgt. Rougles’ family each day. I’m so frustrated at that damn “rules of engagement” crap. Who’s the idiot in the Pentagon that came up with that one? Quit trying to help people who don’t want it. The moment those village elders said they wanted revenge for the US attack on their village, after US soldiers had been fired at from their village, US soldiers should have arrested them and then blown up the village and all roads that let to it. Bomb the hell out Afghanistan, then drop a few on Pakistan and sprinkle a few big bombs on Iran..oh drop one Syria, too. After watching the videos, I’m pissed knowing of the lives lost due trying to help and educate these 7th Century, ignorant people…shame on them for not improving themselves when they had the opportunity.
GOD BLESS ALL OUR SOLDIERS OUT THERE AND GOD PUT YOUR HAND OF PROTECTION ON THEM EACH & EVERYDAY.

I am writing this as an irate veteran who spent 25 years as an infantry drill instructor in the United States Army , I take it very perosnally that many of the thousands of soldiers I have trained for comabt have been sent into the hell of a war zone with little thought given to what that means. I have no way of knowing how many of those fine soldiers have mental issues, lost limbs or lost lives. We know that the number killed is over 900 and wounded over 7,000 and 1 in 5 will suffer mental issues due to war , the odds are some of those were my soldiers.
I spent those years serving my country by trying to instill HONESTY & INTEGRITY in my soldiers as well as teaching them the many skills of armed combat. I was their counselor, teacher, mother and their father. For this president to have the gall to send those soldiers into comabt simply because he had his comrades wanted to do so is obscene.
The lie that he repeated daily is that Saddam would not allow weapons inspectors to do their job is BS! There were over 400 UN inspectors in Iraq going anywhere they wanted to go including the presidential palaces, when Bush pulled the plug and invaded a sovereign nation breaking international law in the process.
I pray that AMERICANS watch the video Fahrenheit 9/11 and see the real truth as far reported than any media has done this my fellow Americans is how it is . Thank God someone has stood up for our soldiers and their families left suffering here at home. This phony war represents the biggest military mistake ever made in the history of this country , and my soldiers are dying because of it. That is not to mention the “untold” thousands of innocent Iraqi and Afghanistan civilians killed by the weapons of war.
There is no excuse for this war , Ther eis no excuse for this president or his minions. PERIOD .
Those outstanding individuals who serve this country do not deserve to be thrown into the path of roadside bombs, rocket-propelled grenades, machine guns fire and small arms fire based on lies by our Gov. Trust me these weapons kill just as easliy as a weapon of mass destruction.YET this president sent our troops into combat thinking they would face weapons of mass destruction. What kind of person would do that without exhausting every possible alternative and taking all of the time in the world instead of rushing headlong into war with NO END ? Now you know why I am furious.

I guess the price for freedom is worth more for American soldiers to die then it is to live in the land of the free. Just read up on how much money so far was invested over a trillion dollars and still no Bin Ladden , I hope this man knows how much he is worth to America to see him captured or dead then that of our loved ones fighting to get him …..and the sad part is WE are all paying the price TAXES ring a bell , our families will be paying for this the next 10 generations not the Goverenment, for them it is “free”
God Bless this great land so far the only thing I see free is to speak because everything else we pay for one way or another .

Let me see if all the Americans out there heard what Maria heard the “elders” say I know I did and we did what ? Did not that SGT say.. Are you calling me a liar that we did not get shot at last night , and we did what? Tried to REASON with them COME ON we are spending trillions of tax paying dollars and losing our precious military to REASON with people that for one do not speak English let alone give a rats behind that they are in the middle of a war zone. You tell me if you lived there and had to choose Americans or their own wonder who they would pick first. Ofcourse they will choose their own , these elders are nothing more than snitches for the Teliban and they are paying 14 year olds to rat on US , 14! for Gods sake a “CHILD” as a pawn to kill our service men …that should say enough to America that they are willing to scarifice a child for the safety of a man what could careless about them to begin with and they aer loyal to that kind of person? I am so so grateful that I can hold my 14 yaer old every night and tell him I love him and in the mean time my other son is over there fighting each day just to survive over all this nonsense . I agree with you 100 % bring the troops home and send the final message to all over there , not very Christain of me either but come on if they can put the life of a 14 year old on the line then do they really care about he quality of life at all? Put that country out of its misery, hell we would shoot a horse if it broke a leg , why wouldn’t we try to save the lives of our fellow Americans and spare them to do what we need here taken care of here in America . We are more concerned about cleaning up a country that obviously has no concern to be civil atleast over here we fight for it everyday. Time to wake up people and worry about what is wrong here in USA first , how can we possibly lead by example if we can not be an example? Pot calling the kettle black …IF we can show the world we do as we say then and only then perhaps others will follow but I can sit here and say this if all my friends jumped off that bridge would I follow HELL NO …. I would already be in that water trying to save them .

As a former Marine , I take a lot of pride in saying I am an American . I never been into politics until recently , and I am so discusted in the way our country is being controlled. Honestly I do not give a crap about what politicans are doing, as I believe most of them are full of BS , However when I haer of my brothers and sister dying in another country for which there is no purpose it straight PISSES ME OFF.
I know what it is liek to be 19 in the military and completley obedient to orders. These “HEROS” will not challenge the tasks laid before them. They will risk everything they have because the believe blindly in their leader. A leader who in my eyes is becoming more and more the “ENEMY” . Never have I ever disliked a president in office , Never have I ever even cared what was going on with our government, but it does not take a genius to figure out something is wrong when every time you turn on the news and you hear about 2 or 3 more US TROOPS KILLED.
I spent tiem in Kuwait in the 90′s and I believed in us helping them , we had an honorable purpose to be there . We ( our country) can be the bad guy , we are not always right!

Posted by: We Aren't Always Right | November 17, 2007, 10:30 am 10:30 am

Every person on this earth has choices except those in war. I feel we should offer that to our soldiers , like any job if we do not like where we are we can change that , so why not give that opportunity to a soldier with out being called YELLOW or Anti American or a trader , if you had to make a choice to live or to die which would you choose , I say to most you would chose the right to live, and for all those that say I would die for our country then I suggest you go to your local recruiter and sign up , just go and be a hero…. Why not train all the prisoners in jail for combat use the tax dollars we spend to house them to train them to defend this country instead of defaming it… hell half of them are in for murder, so let them go and die , their victum already has. Put our jails to use , you want to keep repeated drug dealers and gangs off the streets instead of sending them to jail and then releasing them back out
into society train them while in jail and instead of probation or parole it is military, if you do well and tow the line or are sent to war and come alive then give you back your freedom , make something of your life instead of being skum of the earth. We as parents have to fight you to keep our kids safe from the harm you cause them.We suffer gang deaths and drug deaths daily.
Learn to be a part in this world instead of a part “of” , remember you gave up your rights when you broke the law, here is your chance to earn it back. I am sure now every lawyer and public defender likes that . just a suggestion to help our brave ones that do care about this country as a whole, we are so pissed off at these others countries and leaders and we are forgetting who lives really are at risk here, it is not yours or mine directly it is those that are afraid to blink , or afraid to wipe the sweat off their face, or those that do not sleep in fear of being shot at , or actually see their commrade die right in their face. Stop wasting time here to air all your good intentions and bitch about this or that, take that time or energy to send them a thank you , or send them something as simple as a package of oreos , or what ever. but please if you do nothing then nothing is the result, show how true you really are to these brave individuals because they are showing how true they are to you!
GOD BLESS US ALL AS ONE .

Sometimes we go through situations in life and feel we deserve more , we are so “self ” absorbed in our little world that we tend to forget just how good we have it good , bad or indifferent , sure we think we are living in a situation where “WE ” feel alone or left out , but we have to remember that God provides what we need and not what we want in life , Take a minute to look around you and appreciate what you have right in front of you , it may not always be what “we expected” it to be “, but it is what God gave to us for a reason, it is ours to be proud of …. Try to be a bit more loving to each other , except the faults they have cause we have them too, try to be more understanding of those we live with, be more loving of who they are and not what we want them to be ,we both had to sac rifice things in our lives for each other. If you think you have it “so bad” don’t stay in your pain or misery and drag others along with you that is not how God taught us to be….. Spare those around you and yourself ,leave it behind with dignity and grace and move forward ……. We have to strong for ourselves and others and pray for those that are living in situations beyond their control , take a moment to look around you ,the home you live in, the children you raised , the spouse you have spent years with , the life you created and the love you share ( not measured by feelings but by the things they do for you ) the memories of good times and not bad, ( we all have them and tend to dwell on them ) take a moment to hug the people you live with , tell them we love them and forgive them for their faults , and to be able to love and forgive ourselves as well, take a moment to “hear the laughter with in those walls ” and “see the smiles” of all those that passed through your door and the joy we have all had with each other , life is too short to waste it on “SELF ABSORTION” take a minute to pray for those who are sacrificing their lives to give us all we have today , when you are retiring for the night in a hot bath be thankful it is clean hot water
Look at your home you live in and be gratful it is not a shack
Love the person you say “good night” too. tomorrow is never a given
Say a prayer tonight for those who really are in situations that are much worse then we have …….be thankful to God that life as we see it may not always be a “perfect” world but one that is ours to be grateful for , everyone has problems which we tend to make much bigger than they really are …. We stand a much greater chance waking up and seeing what we do have right in front of us that we so much take for granted … as for the soldiers many miles away from home and family, it is literaly second by second . Don’t waste one more to be angry or resentful, make peace with in yourself and with others………………….
May God Bless You ………
Until then
Peace and Serenity be with us all.

D F posted:
“Why risk our soldiers in putting them in these situations where we cannot trust the villages? I say we give 48 hours for all women and children to clear the area and we annihilate the hell out of the area. We have the resources and the technology to get the job done, quit wasting our good soldiers. Why fight at their level. ”
***** My thoughts exactly – with a few tweaks.
I would call in the elders of all the Korengal villages – which ARE all Taliban, believe it – and make them the following deal: “Here’s how it goes, fellas. The very next village from which even one shot is fired and/or we find another pile of ordinace – we’ll fly over and give you a heads up to get outta Dodge within 30 minutes.” (That’s all they need to scoot out of those tiny villages – but doesn’t leave them time to mull it over – just get humping)
“After 30 minutes, anyone left in the village, we will assume they are anxious to meet their 24 virgins…and the village will be gone”
It would only take ONE bomb…for all the rest of the villages to snap too – winters coming on and they want food, blankets, etc…not to be hunkering down in the open mountains – like our brave troops are doing.
Then, the very next ambush, we PROVIDE AIR COVER! Just one gun ship whirring over the hill and straffing them will have them scurrying in every direction – those that are still using oxygen – and easy to pick off…I doubt we’d see many more, if any, ambushes as these barbarians are really cowards.
Time for the commander of the 173rd to realize what we can all see – the MO: our troops trek several very hard miles through some of the most treacherous terrain for troops on planet earth, to visit a hostile village full of Taliban… then they have those same several hours to trek back – with heavy packs, exhausted…while the Taliban who know exactly when and where they will be coming and how many, and set up a 3 pronged attack =
How many times must this same scenario be repeated before the higher ups GET A CLUE. (My grandson is there)

I was in Afghanistan in the Nuristan and Kunar province with 10th Mountain. We were replaced by this group of 173rd soldiers. It is so good to see people shedding some light on the struggles soldiers are having over there. The media concentrates so heavily on Iraq and forgets all about Afghanistan. I was in Iraq in 2003 and I have to say that Afghanistan was much worse of a deployment for me. Good luck to these guys, hopefully none have to go back to that place. Maybe some of the “Americans” that talk about supporting troops will end up over there and realy suport their troops.

I support our troops, but I do not support our Commander and Chief. The media is instructed on what to report and it molds our ideas about whats going on. They want us to feel threatened…”weapons of mass destruction..” “terror terror terror”
Fox news is the worst. It’s called propaganda folks, it’s been going on forever, and it will continue to go on until we are all duped into rallying behind unjust occupations of other countries, wars for oil and control….wake up and smell the coffee folks. Our military men and women are following orders, they have a job to do, and they do what they are told. The politics behind it is very important, and relevent. If you want to be educated, read all you can, and consider points of view that you may not agree with. Stop dismissing views and stories that you think are unbelievable until you do your own investigating. Think for yourselves for once. The US is divided amongst itself which is very dangerous for our future and for our kids. I support our troops, but our President is simply a puppet for the big money guys. Wake up before it’s too late people.

Does anyone know Nostradamus ?
“In the City of God there will be a great thunder, Two brothers torn apart by Chaos, while the fortress endures, the great leader will succumb”,
The third big war will begin when the big city is burning”
…on the 11 day of the 9 month that…two metal birds would crash into two tall statues…in the new city..and the world will end soon after”
- Nostradamus 1654
Let’s go back and apply a little intellectual honesty to our analysis. What earthly (or unearthly) justification could there possibly be for describing New York City as “the City of God?” Why would the great seer refer to the World Trade Center towers as “two brothers” when a more apt word like “buildings” or “monuments” — or even, egad, “towers” — is at hand? Granted, the word “fortress” is not a completely unreasonable moniker for the Pentagon, but by what stretch of the imagination could one justifiably assert that the United States “succumbed” to the 9/11 attacks?
Two steel birds will fall from the sky on the Metropolis. The sky will burn at forty-five degrees latitude. Fire approaches the great new city (New York City lies between 40-45 degrees)
Immediately a huge, scattered flame leaps up. Within months, rivers will flow with blood. The undead will roam earth for little time.
Nostradamus’ prediction on WW3:
“In the year of the new century and nine months,
From the sky will come a great King of Terror…
The sky will burn at forty-five degrees.
Fire approaches the great new city…”
“In the city of york there will be a great collapse,
2 twin brothers torn apart by chaos
while the fortress falls the great leader will succumb
third big war will begin when the big city is burning”
He said this will be bigger than the previous two. 2001 is the first year of the new century and this is the 9th month. New York is located at the 41st degree Latitude.

You don’t get it, do you? We send our troops to fight our wars, yet YOU want to have no consequences for the decisions that we, as Americans, are making. War should not be taken lightly. If we can stomach seeing Iraqis and Afghanis shot, burned, and butchered then we shouldn’t have a problem seeing the reality of war when it comes home to us. The First Amendment…it’s what they are supposedly fighting for, isn’t it?

So for all of you soldiers who do and will read this Thank you so much for your courage, strength and sacrafice. You are well appreciated in this house. God Bless

My husband is in 173ABCT, 1-91st CAV. I’m proud that he’s serving our country and he’s one of he finest soldiers but I would much rather have him safe at home with me and our three boys. The brigade has suffered great loss in the few months they’ve been in Afghanistan and it is heart wrenching to know some of these guys will never come home. God bless our troops. Please keep them lifted in prayer.

My son was killed 21 June, 2006 in Afghanistan. I commend the team that allowed this footage to be filmed and the journalists who had the guts participate and bring it home.
I sat watching the footage knowing as raw as it was, it comes no where near the battle that took my son and three other men on the side of a mountain that terrible night in June of ’06.
It saddens and raises anger in my soul that there is so much ignorance as to what is going on in Afghanistan.
Whenever I read the horrific, uninformed, spiteful comments from those that don’t know I am furious.
I can’t believe my son,all our fallen died for selfish individuals who have posted such slander as I have read here.
The news of the devastating conditions, the critical nature of this war has been there for years but no one paid attention.
Shame on everyone of you sitting safely underneath the cover of our American Flag while brave men and women take on this enemy in these extreme elements.
No one wants war. It’s horrible. None of us want our sons/daughters/wife or husband to be killed. My life is shattered beyond repair, My son left loving family, a fiance, a younger brother with disabilities whom he had pledged to be guardian/caretaker for. And now we have no one. (and as selfish as America is I fear greatly for his safety as a disabled Adult in this society and his brother died for this Country!)
In addition to poltical- religious issues combined with terrorism the Afghanistan Ware has it’s base in the drug trade and trafficing of drugs. Drug Lords are involved .
God Bless every Fallen Soldier, This ABC Team and may God protect and shelter every Soldier serving our country and awake those that are undeserving of their sacrifice!

I want to address the Drill instructor, I find it hard to believe you are such as postion or were? military drill instructors are not cozy, whinning lets roll over and run girls like yourself? My Drill instructor was relentless broke us down and bulit us up again for War!!! thats your job Drill did you forget? I had a broken hand for 3 days in the desert, and my unit and my Drill patched me up, I remember the day I left and my Drill said War is Hell, Peace is a price we all pay and if we have to go through Hell to get to it then Hell move over, and take note this group will move Heaven and Hell to complete the mission, and God Bless you all. My Drill had cancer and told no one he died 3 years later, he wrote a letter it said No Tears, No Regrets, The Marines are the best, Enemies of America will get no rest, and Peace is our Quest. He was my dad. All my bro and sis in the middle stand proud little pay and sometimes a ungrateful few, you wear a uniform of the colors of the Red White and Blue and are members of a select few, keep your heads low and your aim high, be safe come home soon.

I am the father of a soldier serving in the 2-503rd. He is on his second deployment because he was stop lossed. He knows all of the guys in this article both here and gone. He should have been home this past July 07 after serving 4 years. He wants to be home. We want him home. Yes, he enlisted of his own accord. Yes, I thought we should have gone into Afghanistan. However, he would never have been stop lossed if not for Iraq. A place I never thought we should have been in. Neither does my son think we should have ever gone there. My son and his company have served honorably and dutifully.

These soldiers do not serve for any cause other than the guy next to them. Our politicians did not define any cause. Our politicians both past and present should be ashamed for not defining the cause, not stipulating an end game, not making it clear what winning means or how to achieve it. I can not bring myself to stand up for a war with no end game defined. My son signed up on his own but the politicians have changed all the rules over and over again since he did. He lost 40% of his hearing on his first tour and now has high blood pressure at 23 years of age. He would not have been considered for combat just 2 short years ago. Now he is considered able. The politicians in charge now don’t like the rules so they just go ahead and change them. The politicians should do their job and find a political solution to the problems we now face and bring our kids home. This country needs a new direction. Perhaps a political revolution.

I guess this is about as real as it gets. There are no words to describe how i feel. My brother Kenneth Nicodemus is one of the brave men in this video. It hits home more than I can put into words. My heart is heavy for are young men over there. A war that began before our four fathers, and will go on after you and I are gone. It is something that americans dont understand, we cant fix it,and that is not in our vocabulary. This was wrote and told before us. Let what will be….be. We are fighting faith and we cant win. I love my brother……

I never knew what my brother was going thru, what he was seeing on a daily basis, what hell he was living. Seeing this broadcast, I was able to get a better understanding. I would also like to get a copy of this video if possible. Hugo never talked about his time there in Afghan. We would always talk about how we were doing, about our family. I guess he did not want to worry the family…..To all who wear a uniform, THANK YOU!! To my now extended family of the 173rd, my prayers are with you. To my brother, Spec Hugo V.(Doc Doza) Mendoza, I LOVE YOU-I MISS YOU!!!!

my brother and I served in the vietnam era. Now his 2 boys are serving in the Air Force now. The Bible says there will be wars and rumors of wars. This is not one of the rumors. It’s tuff spreading Democracy with guns and bombs. But we do it because we can. Most folks want a president who changes with the wind. Sorry Bush isn’t your guy. I might add that Bush (right or wrong)did what he said he would and then didn’t bend to the popular belief of the day. We are in 2 wars, Irac and Afghanistan. Lets win them first. Then come home with our heads high, not between our legs. You never know, maybe we will spread Democracy and other countries can be free, just like us.

Americans need to remember why we went into Afghanistan to begin with. In order to strike back at those who were responsible for attacking us, we had to go to the heart of their training grounds. The problem with Afghanistan is that we didn’t finish the job before we went into Iraq. Afghanistan was not secured when President Bush decided to spread “Bushonomics” throughout the Middle Eastern countries. Americans also have to remember what the socioeconomic conditions, culture, and religions of this region are. As mean and cruel as the Taliban are to these people, they are kinship to them in comparison to the foreign and unfamiliar American troops occupying their country. They are engaged in illegal drug activities which are supported by the Taliban and punished by Americans. In their minds, we are their enemy not the Taliban. Americans need to understand that the developing countries view Americans and our culture differently than industrialized countries do. Wars fought in developing countries will never be fought like the traditional wars Americans are accustomed to fighting in the past. I don’t think we can really expect these people to trust us especially in times of war when we are occupying their lands. I support the American troops and all the efforts they have made to defend and protect our freedoms and way of life, it is the politics that always seem to get played out in situations like this that create most of the problems

My prayers and deepest wishes are for our brave soldiers and their families, to be safe and reunited asap. My appreciation and gratitude to them are boundless. We owe you so much; when you get home, the rest of us should see that you have all you need to enjoy as healthy and stress-free life as possible. Please speak up loudly if you are mistreated in any way when you get home. We will listen.
I can understand our going into Afghanistan due to 9/11, but the Iraq invasion seemed foolish to me, and downright criminal of our leaders to force us to invade there. That country was better off with Sadaam than with us.
I’m furious at our leaders for rushing into Iraq at the expense of our precious young people’s lives and sanity. If we must put our nation’s brave guardians at risk, it should be in true defense of our country, not just to push our weight around and change other country’s governments.
Our folly is responsible for ruining Iraq, and ending many more lives than Sadaam ever did. If we weren’t bogged down there, we would probably have better luck in Afghanistan, and maybe even find Bin Laden.
I’m so proud of our troops’ courage,
character, and excellence….I am sending love, big hugs, and prayers for safety to every one of our soldiers out there from a mom who cares about all of you. It breaks my heart to know that the hardships you encounter can be so horrible. You deserve so much better.
Thank you all from the bottom of my heart, and come home soon. Love, MamaJanery

We are in Afghanistan to eliminate terrorist groups and anyone who harbors those groups. We will never be able to succeed in these wars because our media and weak hearted citizens are missing the obvious, we are at war. We have so many regulations that keep our troops from doing their jobs effectively. Why can’t our soldiers fire on targets with woman and children inside? We are not putting them in harms way, the people they protect and harbor do that. The media is quick to point out any rumor of civilian casualty, but we never hear the other side of the story; the side that was shown here. Our troops are asked to gain favor with these villages and take on fire from the same villages. We can’t blame Bush because we as a nation cry out when our troops fight an actual war.

I am a former soldier of the 173rd Airborne and was in the first deployment to Afghanistan from 2005-2006. This is old news to me, nothing surprising. It shows why are our strategy does not work over there. We win every battle but are not winning the war, why? We cannot win the people, they have a seemingly endless number of new recruits and they are being protected by Pakistan (we cannot attack their strongholds on the border). Familial ties are very strong as are tribal ties. Kill someone, innocent or not and many if not entire families and tribes turn against you.
They are brainwashed to believe we (US) are coming to Christianize them (their greatest fear) and destroy Islam. These are country yokels who know nothing and we kill them and in turn the enemy grows because of their loved ones and clan wanting revenge. They do not want to destroy the US, they are defending their homes and their religions. It is their leaders with that ultimate agenda and have tricked their troops. Somewhat like the US and so both sides the soldiers become tools. I could no longer stand to be a tool of the US government and be forced to fight a war against others so used. It is sad, and most soldiers don’t realize any of this. We are not taught to think, other than about combat. Listen to what I say. I have seen it with my own eyes. The war is lost because the common people will never accept us or trust us fully. The reason this will not change is we are not a Muslim country..

My son an Airborne Ranger and is with the 173rd in Afghanastan. Constantly in fire fights with the Taliban and hiding secrets from us; far from the truth of what is going on over there.. He was sent for 12 months and extended to 15 months and for what reason. We pray for him daily. Does Bush??? Does Bill Clinton? Remember Clinton?; The one who dropped his drawers in the White House,Commander in Chief of our troops; the same guy who had the chance by intelligence to kill Bin laden several times but let him go.The same one in 2008 campaigning for his wife; who we don’t need for another 8 years of lies in the Whit House.Everyone pray for our soldiers. For those in Congress and Bush involved who sent them over, I pray you have sleepless nights. This is a sinnless war; like Viet Nam and the unfinished war of Korea. They have no oil and changing their religion and ordeals is like telling us quit going to McDonald’s. It’ll never happen. SO WHY IN THE HELL OUR OUR KIDS DYING FOR SOMETHING SO SENSELESS??.The Taliban and Al-Quedia can cross our US borders daily so why are we spending Trillions of dollars over there when we can’t even keep illeagals out in the US; say 12 millon of them. Wake up America and most of all Congress. Bush you most definitely need a plan to bring our troops home.Remember election day.We need our troops brought home.

My cousin, of “C” Chosen Company of the 173rd, died in an ambush (along with 8 others) leading troops back to their outpost after a meeting with town elders (probably related and a part of the insurgent network)….On Nov 9 ’07. These soldiers in these outposts need more air/fire support and more troops to do their job to root out the taliban along the Pakistan border. We also have a handicap that the likes of Bin Laden and others probably move around these areas of caves and treacherous hillsides and valleys. If we can’t chase them down in Pakistan where they also hide….we might as well pack it up and go home. Otherwise we just need to nuc the area of the insurgents along with their opium/poppy fields of eventual export of heroin….funding the taliban and also killing others who use these powerful drugs. What a freakin mess. I say we either mow the place down with intense air/fire support or go home and defend our borders efficiently. May our dear soldiers have safety and rest. May those like Matt who have sacrificed to the extreme ultimate price …. be blessed and may we see our loved ones again after this life is over. Our government needs to do the right things and get us realigned with proper priorities being addressed….right here at home. That goes for our occupation in Iraq as well. Being the world’s policeman overseas is not the role of the US without substantial ally support. There is no war to win here. Bush and other similar supporters need to get real and pull their egos and heads out of their butts. Mark …

To whom it may concern:
First, I am a veteran. I am a Father of 4 children. My two son’s dedicated their lives to serving and protecting the freedom of the USA. My eldest son has served two tours in Iraq and he is on his second tour in Afganistan. He serves with the 173rd. Why are Americans so negative? We take alot for granted living in freedom. I may not agree with all the decisions our President’s made . However, those of you who continue to complain and critisize our Comdr. in Chief regarding the two campaigns, you forget that since 9/11/2001, we have not had one enemy penetrate or cause any deaths or damage to any public area. My sons volunteered to serve their country in the U.S. Army. They knew the risk. My eldest son has been in 21 years, and my youngest son has been in 13 years. I am proud of all of our warriors serving in harms way. I appreciate there enthusiasm and patriotic loyalty in protecting all of us living in the freedom many have died for in past wars. America is at war with Islamic fanatical extremist who don’t have any respect for human life. They kill there own countrymen and children. I wish I could end the wars all over the globe. I, also, want my sons to come home in one piece. I cry every time I see one of our young men killed in action. Yes, I get really pssst.. Our leaders of this free America should take a unified stand, to fight this war to eradicate the evil that threatens the whole world. It saddens my heart to see so much bickering amoung our political leaders in Washington. Well, you all know the rest of the story. I just want all of the men serving to know, I will always support them. Thank You for your past and present service. May our God bless and keep you all safe. A fellow Vet. Salutes you!!!

Posted by: chuck DiBias | April 4, 2008, 3:51 pm 3:51 pm

Let me just say that there are valid CONCERNS on all sides. The difference is sorting fact from fiction and what is doable. I come from a long line of military vets within our family. Dating all the way back to WWI. I have 2 sons in Iraq right now. Both enlisted and officer. I must say that when we cowboy out across the world chasing every good patriotic cause for “freedom” AND do it on the basis of lies and mostly going it alone w/o SUBSTANTIAL ally support (boots on the ground) against the majority vote and desires; giving any commander in chief a blank check….all the while ignoring HUGE issues right here at home at our own borders; spread WAY TOO THIN; we are only weakening our whole presence in our quality of life and self respect. WE HAVE LOST IT. THIS goes way beyond the intent of our forefathers and the constitution. I support my sons and the soldiers along side them….I just don’t like the way our gov’t abuses their powers. Our ego is out of control and in the way we are now doing things brings no winning of any war without borders, identity, or uniforms. Mainstream America needs the education of reality and OUR results in the seeds which we plant. I am all about improving our security and defense here…but not to try and teach everyone else how to live their lives….unless we are invited in. We SIMPLY don’t have the resources to do it this way and ignore for instance our own borders, needed social programs, and drug trafficking killing our youth at home. 9/11 was a wakeup call for us being asleep in our security at home. We responded with revenge. Responding to every perceived threat in the way we do mostly on our own is a reckless way of example to the world. Our self respect is tarnished beyond belief. Fighting (when justifed) smarter not harder is an appropriate way. And most everyone is giving us that feedback. How ignorant we are regardless of the high tech weaponry we possess. This is a huge bubble that is only getting larger with no end in sight. My father was a career Navy pilot in Viet Nam and many friends and other family members who have served. I’m VERY educated about this. I honor our troops but not in the way that they are USED…especially chasing oil. I’m proud of my sons and their loyalty but I want them to fight with proper protocol and procedure….and only as a last resort when all else fails. The washington politicians don’t send their own into infantry battle. IN DEFENSE….not reacting to mere threats that are exaggerated….and when we do…only with allies in tandem action supported by the local gov’t who will fight alongside with the majority endorsement. We are way too much cavalier about offensive conflicts that will and is scarring us for decades to come. OUR RESULTS says it all. What is realistically achieveable. Never forget the results of Viet Nam….and I’ll never forget my cousin Matthew Ferrara who was ambushed & died on last Nov 9 leading a platoon in NE Afghanistan. Unless for instance we are willing to nuc the area like Hiroshima there is nothing to win. Fighting suicidalists w/o borders or uniforms; them having home court advantage; who send their own women and children out in front…who believe they will go to heaven…it’s futile and pure waste. America is asleep at the wheel like we were in Viet Nam. Tighten our own border security and rely on the “star wars” defense system we possess. Ignore the reckless threats of maniacs and call their bluff. People like Syria, N Korea, and Iran for instance knows very good and well if they were to unleash on us….we would level them….they would commit suicide as whole nations. Otherwise because of our limited resources….let them have their own poverty stricken civil and religious wars. Our own border and immigration policies are majorily flawed and no amount of fighting overseas will improve that situation because of the “enemy” mentality that exists. WAKE UP AND EDUCATE AMERICA and hold our elected officials accountable!

Posted by: Mark Vreeland | May 3, 2008, 1:12 pm 1:12 pm

Let me just say this, I was there, no amount of talking will stop or end anything. Bullets and Ruthlessness, that is what wins a war. TO beat them you have to become worse then them, terrify them let them know that even if their “allah” or whoever he is says they should have no fear, give it to them because when you see someone go to pieces from a .50 cal round your gonna be afraid. I hate them all. Every last one of them.

Posted by: Bo | April 1, 2009, 12:50 am 12:50 am

That is nothing Canada has lost over 200 in afgan since this started. We should pull everyone from Iraq and Afgan what so many of you don’t get because you are brainwashed by the propaganda is that these people are very uneducated compared to the average north american and all they see are foriegn soldiers knocking down doors of their houses, shooting at locals. Let me ask you something if some strange army came into your town and started blowing up your house and killing your children or shooting into your town then came in and said sorry how would you react? I am not saying these people are civilized as their culture does seem to be decades behind as far as being civil. However these wars are pointless they are just going to create more hated toward North Americans and make martyars of maytars of these idiots. I think if they do find and kill bin laden they shouldn’t tell anyone…….. Just my 2 cents…

With soldiers being in dangerous positions as they fight for their country, this great website has made communication easy and manageable with video phones that just need a microphone and a web cam. All the member in the military services has to do is to enter a list of contacts of the friends and family that he/she would like to exchange messages with. Your loved ones and friends can even listen to your audio message or watch a video message whenever they want without any software, or registering or logging in.
