Drunken Hookup Barbie Demands Bush Official’s Resignation
Using simple filmmaking techniques — and employing a crude parallel between lead poisoning and sexually transmitted diseases — a consumer advocacy group is pushing for the nation’s top product safety official to step down. In a short, made-for-Internet video released by the Campaign for America’s Future, a Barbie doll calls a Ken doll to complain she has contracted lead poisoning from a late-night, alcohol-induced, post-breakup (and off-camera) rendezvous with her dashing plastic boy-toy. "It’s hard to talk about, Ken," Barbie says into a cell phone glued to her head. "But I’ve contracted something." Video: Barbie and Ken Take on Toy Safety "Oh, no!" Ken replies into his phone. "Barbie, I’m so sorry. What is it?" "It’s — it’s lead poisoning!" Barbie says. "Barbie accessories containing toxic levels of lead were some of the 25 million products recalled this year," the group explains in a press release announcing its campaign. Click Here for Full Blotter Coverage. The Washington, D.C.-based nonpartisan watchdog is using the video to call for the resignation of Nancy Nord, acting director of the Consumer Product Safety Commission, for declining to push for better funding of her agency despite recent problems with unsafe products being imported to the United States. Drunken hookup Barbie is not alone: several Democratic politicians, including House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif. have called on Nord to step down. Asked to comment on the video, CPSC director of information and public affairs said, "We’re just not going to dignify anything like that." Nord said last month she had no intention of resigning and rejected criticism she was too cozy with manufacturers. Do you have a tip for Brian Ross and the Investigative Team?

Perhaps I’m missing something, but the video doesn’t sound all THAT offensive to me. I would expect a consumer ADVOCACY group to have an extreme reaction to this issue. Our legislators should more outraged at the potential risks these toys would pose to American children than chastising this safety official. It’s about time that pandering to foreign governments took second place to the health and safety of the American public.

What does “Bush” have to do with this? She’s asking for Nord’s resignation. Why is “Bush” in the title?

This is ridiculous. People are so quick to point fingers and place the blame somewhere. Let’s focus on the issue at hand.

No barbie, please don’t resign. There needs to be a middle aged barbie and a senior barbie. Middle aged with slightly blonder hair or gray starting to show. Boobs sagging a little. And senior barbie with a mid stomach growth kind of like baby huey. just kidding folks. stop being so serious on such a wierd story. ;) (sense of humor at work)

Maybe I’m missing something here. I worked in the product safety and reliability department of a major US toy manufacturer many years ago, and at that time it was the company’s responsibilty to assure that all products complied with CPSC regulations. All products were tested and validated to conform. All paints used were tested for banned substances—lead and others– prior to approval for use. All manufactured product was audited for compliance when shipments from off-shore suppliers were receved. If non-conformimg product was detected, the shipments were destroyed and the supplier was held accountable for all costs. Subsequent shipments were scrutinized more closely.
How is it now that the government watchdog agency— Consumer Product Safety Commision is being held accountable for the shortcomings and failings of the manufaturers to adequetly monitor the manufacturing of their products???

Pretty clever, if you ask me. The American love affair with Chinese-made products is indeed rather like a drunken hookup: we have become dependent upon and are at risk because of one the worst enemies of democracy and human rights in the world. And it is indeed Bush, not Nord, who must bear ultimate responsibility for the lead-in-toys fiasco – except that Bush is no Truman and so has no concept of stopping the buck.

The refusal to take safety precautions is clearly an attack on the American people. These countries are committing Bioterrorism to kill us bloodlessly. And it seems the murderers include the Bush administration. The terrorists are after us all right, but they want us to BUY the poisoned Kool-aid from them….and laugh all the way to the bank.

It sounds like the Bush administration are accomplices to the bioterrorism being committed on the American people by the terrorists. That’s domestic terrorism!!! Poisoned products; Bloodless coup to take over our country.

In response to the comment about working for the product safety department of a major US toy manuf and questioning “How is it now that the government watchdog agency— Consumer Product Safety Commision is being held accountable?” Its simple. The CPSC is supposed to make sure the corporations stick to the law. The corporations obviously didn’t, because their toys are made in China and it wouldn’t be cost effective to test each bath and obviously the Chinese don’t care. And the CPSC is asking for less money to investigate Big Corporations so they can claim “we just don’t have the manpower” so they won’t P**S of Republican Doners…AND if there is a CPSC, why is it there except to make sure the corporations don’t do those things the CPSC was established to keep from happening. Right now the CPSC stands for the Corporation Protective Social Club.

The personal greed, and favoritism shown by memebers of our “of the people, for the people” government has once again place our citicens at risk; first the “war” which has cost untold billions, and ruined countless lives; Now numerous products from a nation that a few short years ago, the US considered dangerous and unfriendly. Time and money corrupts truth and loyalty in our nation’s capital- to the detriment of our own people.

They’re using “Bush” in the title to attract more attention to the story. Pelosi and the liberal media want nothing more than to blame Bush for anything they can get away with.
The problem is much more complex than firing a so-called “Bush official”. We are dependent on Chinese products because our own manufacturing industry is virtually gone. Why? Because for US companies to compete they have to make stuff cheaper.
And its cheaper to ignore safety, environmental, and labor concerns. You know, sweatshops, pollution, toxic chemicals are cost-effective.
But where are we going to buy the stuff, if not from China? The Chinese are much more powerful than anybody will tell you, and they are growing more so each day. So what will cause the Chinese to change their ways? The same thing that created the monster: Consumers, market forces, and the dollar vote.

Most probably the CEO’s for these toy companies are democrats ( didn’t Toys-R-Us contribute to the democrates?); they pushed their manufacturing off-shore where it was “cheaper” laid off american workers and paid themselves exhorbitant salaries. They didn’t bother to keep check on their chinese sub-contractors, that would have cost money. Maybe we should call for all of Congress to step down and resign.

Product safety has gone down so much and its hard to know whos blame. bush has to take some of it,I mean hes doing more than nothing right now with all the products coming in from China…China right now is pissed to say the least with the US..they would stop ships coming in if there was too much more upcry…its nuts.

Sure the Chicoms load up USA_bound products with poisonous stupid_making chemicals. You pay for it, pals.

Don’t blame the Chinese… They are asked to produce goods for the least possible cost so the US company selling them can make more profit, and US consumers would rather buy low-quality, cheap throw-away goods than high quality, more expensive items. What happened to family heirlooms and toys passed down from a generation to the next?
Besides, the US now exports unethical practices so they don’t have to carry the blame. Can’t torture prisoners? Send them to Syria for interrogation, can’t use DDT on crops? Import food from India where they do, Can’t pollute water and air with toxic chemicals? Send production to China where they do. Can’t use slave labor and 8-year old kids in factories? Open a factory in China, Thailand or elsewhere where they will. Until the US consumer asks for the same standards to be applied to foreign manufacturers as to US ones, don’t expect things to change. BTW, that may bring back some manufacturing jobs here and improve the trade balance and the US dollar value….

Buy stuff from your nieghbor. You know, the local mom-n-pop operations. If we quit buying the crap that they are sending us, then they will stop shipping it here. I’d rather keep my local businesses in business, than some faceless Chinese executive. But some people hold the almighty dollar higher than principles, and that is why we will always be bombarded by foriegn products.

Nord, Bush’s appointee, has let the companies get away with murder. She couldn’t answer as to how her agency tests for lead when she knew that was going to be the subject matter before Congress. In China, they deal with corruption a bit differently.

Nonpartisan watchdog? Nice research, Blotter. From their own website: America’s Future works to revitalize a progressive agenda. CAF works to build an enduring majority for progressive change. We challenge those who suggest that nothing can be done and expose the conservative agenda that has made things worse.
According to Wiki: Campaign for America’s Future (CAF) is an American political organization founded by a group of progressive leaders. CAF argues that the Democratic Party should draw sharp contrasts with the Republicans and advance a progressive agenda.
For the last five years, CAF has thrown an annual conference called “Take Back America.” It is a gathering of progressive activists, elected officials, bloggers, left-leaning media outlets, and other liberal nonprofits that meet and share best practices and tactics.
