Famed Attorney Dickie Scruggs Indicted on Bribery Charges

Richard "Dickie" Scruggs, famous for winning huge settlements from the big tobacco companies, has been indicted by a federal grand jury on charges of trying to bribe a judge.  The indictment alleges that Scruggs and other attorneys at his firm, including his son Zach, conspired to payoff a state judge with $40,000 in cash in exchange for a favorable ruling in a civil case. Richard Scruggs is the son-in-law of Sen. Trent Lott, R-Miss., who announced this week he planned to step down from the Senate early. Sen. Lott is not named in the indictment. According to the indictment, Circuit Court Judge Henry Lackey cooperated with FBI agents to help document the alleged bribery scheme. Lackey was presiding over a case where Scruggs had been sued by another law firm for more than $26.5 million in attorneys fees related to Hurricane Katrina insurance claims.  Scruggs is alleged to have used an outside attorney named Timothy Balducci to offer the bribe to Lackey in return for a ruling in favor of his firm. According to the indictment, after the payoff was made, Balducci told attorneys at the Scruggs firm that "we paid for this ruling; let’s be sure it says what we want it to say." Scruggs is also charged with creating false documents to cover up the scheme. Click Here for Full Blotter Coverage. On Wednesday, FBI agents searched Scruggs’ Oxford, Miss. law office and took away copies of computer hard drives, according to the Associated Press. The indictment charges that an e-mail was sent from the Scruggs Law Firm to Balducci containing a draft order of the ruling favorable to Scruggs. The Scruggs Law Firm did not return the Blotter’s request for comment and neither Richard nor Zach Scruggs could be reached on their cellphones. Scruggs was featured on an ABC News "20/20" report last year that detailed his efforts to sue State Farm Insurance on behalf of policyholders who said their Hurricane Katrina-related claims were falsely denied. This post has been updated. Read the indictment against Scruggs. Read the "20/20" report. Do you have a tip for Brian Ross and the Investigative Team?

The judge is NOT a federal judge, he’s a state judge. When are you people going to learn how to check facts?

I wouldn’t think this is the 1st time in his career of trying to bribe a judge.
All his cases with strange outcomes should be investigated.

“when are you people going to learn how to check facts?”

Isn’t Dickie a Democrat? Yet they throw in that he is the brother-in-law of Trent Lott REPUBLICAN. Nice disinformation job ABC.

Others are reporting that Zach Scruggs is Trent Lott’s nephew, not son-in-law. But in Mississippi, couldn’t he be both?

Dear Ross! I thank the FBI for this because to long has things been in a ditch..Judge lackey is an honorable judge…I know..for I faced him in court and sensed his honesty within my attorney.. ! When I hear we do have straight judges, I am believing there is justice if the FBI does get an upper hand..I could use Men like this to help my family for what has been done to us…

nice going, ABC. Not one word mentioned that this is one of the top trail lawyers in the U.S., thereby making him and Stanley Chesley the two top Democrat fundraisers in the land. Keep on that liberal bias, Brian Ross.

The Story SAYS State Judge! The facts are RIGHT, you just don’t like what they say.

Of course anything that might reflect bad on democrats will be left out of the article and anything that might sound bad about the GOP will be added.

Where is 20/20 now? Do the same “investigative journalism” you did against the insurance industry against Mr. Scruggs.
This indictment is of no surprise. Keep following the money.

When he came out against State farm I knew he was a crook. when the water line is 14 feet up a tree down the block, your house was damaged by a flood. water seeks it’s own level. you have no coverage for a flood ,unless you buy flood protection. getting the rest of us to pay for their lack of judgment is not fair . I think he was involved in phoney asbestos cases also

Please tell me how are Dickie Scruggs and Trent Lott in laws?

Posted by: Bruce West | February 9, 2008, 6:57 pm 6:57 pm

Richard’s “Dickie’s” wife, Diane Thompson Scruggs, and Trent Lott’s wife, Tricia Thompson Lott, are SISTERS, thus making Dickie and Trent bro n laws!
