Two-Story AIDS Ribbon at White House

ABC News’ Ann Compton reports: The nation’s capital awoke to a surprise at the White House front door. Overnight cranes draped a giant AIDS red ribbon, two stories tall, on the North Portico of the White House. It will remain in place for two days marking World AIDS Day December 1st.

Such a dramatic symbol is a first here, but the Bush administration has long felt it is not getting the credit due for the President’s "PEPFAR" initiative (President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief) which has spent something approaching $15 billion on HIV/AIDS prevention and treatment in vulnerable African and Caribbean nations. President Bush has also asked Congress to double that amount up to $30 billion over the next five years.

Along with the humanitarian cause, there is a strategic political motivation for President Bush. AIDS is so rampant in some African countries it could become a political destabilizing force in nations where a significant percentage of adults fall ill and die, weakening an entire generation.

the only reason that bush is making any mention about aids is because of his daughter. he did’nt care about it before. until she woke him up to it.. bush cares about nothing of the people of the U.S.A or the world….

he is desparate to do anything to make it look like his failed war on terror was anything but that.

Greg did you read the story? Our President, Bush, has done more for Aids Relief than any public or private person in the history of the world. I have seen this PEPFAR program in action in Uganda and Kenya and I can tell you it’s working and making a difference for hundreds of thousands of people. We need to FINALLY thank our President and all the Drug Companies, because they provide these brand name drugs at vastly reduced prices for this program. If America didn’t have such a corrupt liberal MSM wolfpack press every American would know what I just told you. Have a nice day

Allen Ridge- which drug company do you work for? It’s interesting how Bush can spend billions of dollars in other countries for people with AIDS, but here in America he’ll tell you abstenance is the only way. Ya, great job Bush!

Whether you agree with how the money is being spent or not. This administration HAS spent more money towards WORLD AIDS relief than any other administration before it. I’m a liberal Democrat and on this one thing I do have to applaud this standing president for this.

If Bush were Jesus Christ and went over to Africa and personally miraculously healed each and every one of the people inflicted with AIDS there would be nutcakes here saying negative things about him. What did Bill Clinton ever do to help with the worldwide AIDS crisis other than say I feel ur pain? Bush saw a huge problem and took action. He has done that in a lot of areas.
There are a lot of positive things Bush has done that he gets little or no credit for. He was right on stem cell research. He was right on the surge. He did a tremendous amount of things for the Hurricane victims in LA and MS that we will never hear about about because the story became how people who were too stupid to evacuate became victims of their own stupidity and their city and state government’s ineptitude (look at what happens when a hurricane hits FL or fires hit CA). If you look at a lot of statistics you will see that there have been significant progress in home ownership, educational test scores, crime, the federal deficit, the economy, etc. when compared to the 1990s. Clinton left a lot of problems for Bush to deal with – an economy heading into a recession, a stock market bubble that was bursting, terrorists not dealt with who thought that they could push the US around, allies who no longer felt that they could trust the US to do what it said it would do because Clinton lied to them so much, a CIA in shambles and unable to function properly, a military that had been demoralized by the anti-military Clintons, etc. Bush rallied the country after 9-11, got Home Security up and running, and prevented another 9-11 from happening. He defeated the brutal Tailban in Afganistan and insane Saddam in Iraq. Both were causing short and long range problems to our security. He didn’t lie about WMD. Look what Clinton said about WMD on 12/16/98 when he bombed Iraq. Look what the other Clinton, who knew what her husband knew and had said, said about WMD on 10/10/98 then sit there and tell us with a straight face that they did not lie about WMD too if Bush did. The CIA was a mess and whatever they put out could not be trusted. Bush had to learn this the hard way. Clinton didn’t.
I think Bush will be regarded as one of the best presidents we have had. He has made mistakes of course (trusting some of his generals and Rumsfeld too much) but over all his administration has been successful in a lot of areas. AIDS funding is just one of them.

Don’t count on Bush really doing anything of substance. For the public he will “ask” for $15 billion for AIDS, when the bill crosses his desk, what do you want to bet that he won’t end up signing it?

I think the President has been influenced by his daughter … and that is a good thing!

Mad Jayhawk: I sure think someone drank the cool-aid!! You’ve got to be kidding me right! “He defeated the brutal Tailban in Afganistan and insane Saddam in Iraq. Both were causing short and long range problems to our security. He didn’t lie about WMD”
This president has done more to hurt us internationally then any other president has! And please get off the Bill Clinton kick! So what, he had sex with someone that wasn’t his wife! Let him and his wife deal with it!! I could care less! I can’t stop counting down the days till this man is out of office and we can finally start to clean this country up! As for you, just say no next time, just say no!!!

Middle East Peace, AIDS….hmmm…He’s putting a ribbon around 7 years of absolute corruption and corrosion of America and calling it a present.
Have the middle east problems and AIDS been made better because of W?
PEPFAR – Bush appointed a former drug company exec. to head it.
Promotes condoms for high risk people ONLY(prostitutes, people with AIDS and drug users but not for general population).
Spends 2/3′s of prevention on Abstinence and fidelity education. 1/3 to condoms(high risk only)
