Obama Backs Florida Compromise

ABC News’ Teddy Davis, John Santucci and Gregory Wallace report: On behalf of Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., Rep. Robert Wexler, D-Fla., announced Saturday that the Democratic frontrunner is willing to seat all of Florida delegates with half a vote each in order to end the stalemate over how to allocate the state’s delegates.

"This action will involve extra delegates, up to 19 delegates being awarded to Sen. Clinton," Wexler said. "Sen. Obama should be commended for his willingness to offer this extraordinary concession in order to promote reconciliation to Florida voters."

Although Clinton’s Florida representative, State Sen. Arthenia Joyner, said, "I want it all" — meaning a full seating with full voting power — Clinton’s advisers concede in private (and Bill Clinton concedes in this April 29 audio clip) that the former first lady would be satisfied with a full delegate seating with 1/2 vote for each delegate.

Wexler sought to put Obama’s Florida position in a magnanimous light, saying that the 19 delegates Clinton would net over Obama from Florida would "actually amount" to the same number of delegates that she netted from her victories in Ohio and Pennsylvania.
Clinton received 12 more pledged delegates than Obama in Pennsylvania and seven more pledged delegates than Obama in Ohio.

"Let us unify. Let us move on," Wexler said.

Resolution of Michigan — where Obama took his name off the ballot — has thus far proved more elusive.

This was a foregone conclusion. They will come to some agreement in MI this afternoon, we will have a new number to win the nomination, and this thing will be officially over on Wednesday morning (it was technically over on March 4th).
On to the GE!!!

I agree
The Florida compromise should go through.
Michigan should be split 50/50 or 69/59 delegate split favoring Clinton.
It’s only fair to have it as so.
Possibly bias but this would be a win/win for the Obama camp.

It isn’t right! A vote is a vote! Not some trumped up half vote.

She’s lucky they’re even discussing this. Remember, it was Terry McAuliffe as head of the DNC that stripped these states of their delegates. It was Hillary Clinton, along with all the other candidates that signed the agreement they would not count.
She’s getting her way just by this being discussed. Obama is giving her HUGE concessions here.
In the end, it’s not going to matter. Officially it ends on Wednesday.

I’ve been watching DNC meeting and Wexler did a poor job of representing Obama, and needs to back off the 50% deligate and let the DNC give 100%. You heard the crown yell, answer the question, would Obama support 100% being awarded and he skated all around, but his response was clear. If he holds ground until the vote is taken this afternoon, Obama (which I am a contributor) will lose FL and possibly the whole election once it is spun that he wanted to exclude voters. Get the msg to Obama camp now to have Wexler change is stance asap.

the voters votes count, for those that are not in full understanding, however the delegates are the ones with a half vote
so if you are a voter in florida and you came out to vote, your vote counted

Posted by: bhrandon | May 31, 2008, 9:56 am 9:56 am

Rules are rules. Clinton is lucky this day even came.
In the end, the last three contests will be held, the SDs will make their choices, and Obama will be the nominee.
End of story.

Posted by: Texas Voter | May 31, 2008, 9:56 am 9:56 am

bhrandon,
What’s your point?
You say the voters vote will count but the delegates will count as 1/2 a vote.
What’s your point?

Posted by: Vanessa | May 31, 2008, 9:59 am 9:59 am

Yeah – Floridians only count for a half vote each… sounds like the old south to me. Who’s the racist? me thinks it is BHO

Hillary supporters UNITE. take this all the way to November. Never give up, We all know Hillary wants to run as an independent! That would fix ol’ Barrack and put him back where he needs to be in the South Side of Chicago as a slick, dirty politician in a racist church

Did you guys watch CSPAN and see the mess Wexler made, and how eloquent Nelson was. This will hurt Obama, even though I back him, and was for the 50%.

Posted by: Pamela Byrd | May 31, 2008, 10:03 am 10:03 am

Please Hillary, just go away. You are an embarrassment to women everywhere, to our party, and to elections. Giving your word to abide by the rules and then going back on that word alienated me from you and your tactics forever.
The statement you made referring to the untimely and horrible assassination of RFK sickened me to my toes. I cannot believe you have fallen this far down. Or were you always this deceiving and we failed to recognize it?? Either way, you must go and do it post haste.

Posted by: Ellen | May 31, 2008, 10:03 am 10:03 am

No, Clinton gets to count them as full delegates in her column but they will have a 1/2 vote at the convention.

Posted by: Texas Voter | May 31, 2008, 10:04 am 10:04 am

The DNC Stripped FL of 100% of pledged and un-pledged delegates after our REPUBLICAN colleagues moved the Primary date up too soon. It’s wrong to punish us for that which we could not control. If we don’t get 100% seating with full votes, the DNC better pay for a revote.
That or I, for one, will urge all Dems I know to MAKE their voice heard, with either low turnout or a vote for McCain. How do you like dem apples?

Posted by: FloridaDem | May 31, 2008, 10:08 am 10:08 am

Well after watching this morning’s session of The DNC Rules and Bye-Laws Committee, I’m both shocked and feel shamed, it has been run like a Circus!
The performance from Harold Ickes is what perhaps I expected, I see why Hillary has made so many mistakes, all the morning it was a if Steam was Coming of His Ears, whenever things didn’t go his way you knew it.
But what annoyed me was having an audience made it seem as if it was a footie game the cheering when it was felt points where scored for either one candidate or the other, but what DISGUSTED! me was seeing members of the committee also stand up and cheer and clap at points scored, I though that the dies was to UNITE OUR PARTY – SHAME ON YOU MEMBERS AND THE DISGRACE YOU BRING ON OUR PARTY!
Michigan and Florida put forward a superb case, which previously I did not support, now I do and I understand why, and I believe it is best for Unity. But once more so many of The Rules and Bye-Laws Committee were solely interested in the one Candidate they support, not THE PARTY FIRST which is a Disgrace and Shame on Them!

This has to be run better next time. Obama needs to make sure that if he has opposition in the 2012 primaries that the rules deal better with the screw-ups that Clinton-era leadership created.

We will have a dem majority in both the house and senate! McCain will be crippled!
He is not right wing enough for his own party. They view him as a ‘liberal’.
His website is a joke! His staff made that in attempt to make his base happy with him!
He is more likey to apppoint a moderate judge than anyone else! Isn’t that what you Obama supporters want???
So please just save your scare tactics!

Posted by: chill | May 31, 2008, 10:28 am 10:28 am

People are watching c-span and co and yet they do not understand the concessions. All Obama supporters did was to allow everything the Florida democrats for Clinton asked for with additional concessions. Clinton gets all the votes but the Delegates only get half the votes thus the people’s will still prevail but the delegates get punished. Left for me Obama should never have granted any concession at all. If it was Obama, nobody will be debating this now and thats the truth. Mark it now, many states are going to be moving their state primaries earlier than normal. Can you punish them? No. Clinton has set a precedence.

Posted by: vuzous | May 31, 2008, 10:28 am 10:28 am

It has to be half a vote otherwise we will be going through this fiasco every election cycle. Personally I don`t think either Florida or Michigan should count, elections where candidates aren`t
allowed to campaign and make their case known is not democratic. American Idol at least lets them sing before people vote.

Posted by: Texas Voter | May 31, 2008, 10:35 am 10:35 am

Seating of Florida & Michigan and the allocation of delegate SHOULD NOT impact the outcome of the Primaries!
The United States stop being a monarchy a long time ago, over two centuries ago.
This means that no candidate should be awarded an election ‘victory’ without any campaigning on the ground, but based SOLELY on the prior POPULARITY OF HER HUSBAND!
If Democrats of Florida & Michigan are unhappy with the Republican leaders in their State’s agenda, then Dems of Florida and Michigan should cease the whining to the DNC and America; go back to the citizens of Florida & Michigan this November; and WIN BACK THE STATES’ GOVERNMENT!
It is obviously that the Dems of Fl & Mi were played by their GOP counterparts.
Notice that the GOP of Fl & Mi settled their Primaries amicably? There is a reason for that.
The witty GOP of Fl & Mi move up the Primaries and settled with their National Party in the hope that the Dems will be in dissension. lol

I don’t agree with you guys on this. I was all for 50% of the vote counting, but because of the meeting this morning and you can clearly see the committe wants to award 100% of FL votes, but won’t be able to because Obama will contest it, it is going to make Obama look bad. This from a middle aged, white, FL registered democrat, Obama contributor AND delegate in the primaries.

I sympathise with you.
I’m not an American, so maybe have a slightly nore rounded world perspective.
I can tell you that Neil is how the world percieves the average Americans. Boorish, unintelligent, not wanting to debate but shout down and insult. Basically a dumb bully. I think it may be an insult though to average Americans to label them with Neil.
Neil, my boy…understand this…the world is tired and suffering, the world does not need lobyists or the rich getting richer, the world needs a black president, the world needs a hopeful message. America needs Obama but the world needs him much much more.
You wont understand this though. You never will GET IT. So Ellen dont bother with this waste of space anymore..let him go back to watching Fox.
Vote Obama Americans…please.

once McCain is made to submit to testing for his incipient Alzheimer’s he wont be able to win for dogcatcher in Arizona. His medical report is a sham, with nothing done to test his short term memory or for incipient alzheimer’s and a time limit of 3 hours to ‘read’ 1,300 pages. Farce.
McCain, a former prisoner, willing to waterboard torture prisoners. Farce
Once we give him the brief attention he deserves, his numbers will plummet.
Did you catch his latest failure this week, to get the facts right when trying his bluster about the Middle east?
He will get the votes of the illiterate. Anyone that can read will vote for Barr or Obama.

The Florida House voted 118-0 to move up the primary, so the democrats were 100% behind the move.
This is a self inflicted wound. They are STILL getting everyone seated, but they will have 1/2 a vote at the convention. Even after this, Obama has conceded a HUGE point in that Clinton gets to have them in her column as full delegates.
Again, this is OVER. It was effectively over in March after Texas/Ohio, but it will be officially over on Wednesday morning and Barack Obama WILL BE the Democratic Nominee for the office of President of the United States.

Posted by: Texas Voter | May 31, 2008, 10:57 am 10:57 am

To Cquan, this am during the dnc meeting, wexler refused to answer the question, “if we award 100% of the delegates would you support that”, he kept saying he was for the presentation put forward 1st in which 50% delegates counted, which means 50% vote. Again asked if he would debate it, he wouldn’t answer. The crowd along with myself in the audience were screaming answer the question. So I don’t see a deal in the making where 100% of FL votes count if 100% of FL delegates don’t count. To Derek, are you kidding a mail in vote? remember 2000? OH MY GOD, do you really want to see the screw ups they would make? We already had the problem in this state about early mail in votes not getting counted in the primary, can you imagine a 30 day mail in new primary. It would make 2000 look legite.

To Neil 1785,. Thank GOD, The United States consists of more than two states, and our votes will also count just as those in FL. and MI will count. If you insists upon voting for Mr. McCain that is your right, the right that many young men and women were lied into defending. Therefore vote as you wish They have earned it through an administration that will continue if you and those like you support by backing Mr. McCain. This is no game, peoples livelihoods are at stake. Your well being is a stake here! Look at how much it cost to buy a bag of groceries. There are no do overs why would you take pride in showing the rest of the world just how uncivilized America really is. Extreme foolishness, the act of voting for John Mc Cain over any democrat demostrates foolishness which is the very definition of insanity, no wonder we cant get past sexism and bigotry no wonder we keep putting the Bushes of the world in office this country has been overrun by insane people who would rather do harm than heal. It is my hope that the sensible and decent people from all walks of life unite against the Harbingers of Death aka the Republicans and the Clinton Cultists and cast their vote for the candidate who best reprensents our interest and can bring restoration to this nation.

I have never been on this blog. But it seems insane to me. When this race began, I had nothing against Hillary Clinton. The idea of a woman for president was enticing. I didn’t think Barack Obama had a chance. But he is winning. And legitimately so. And she has screwed up. And the only way out of it is to play on people’s emotions, break the rules for her own gain, and intentionally harm her own party. She is not more concerned about Florida and Michigan voters than Obama. It will help here case, that’s it. Her antics are quite transparent. SHE LOST.

What was that? hahahhahahahahhahah I know your ealier comment was a cut and past from probably some email you recieved, but this cut and paste made no sense at all. Did you have a point? Last time I respond to YOU, because again, it’s not worth my time, or others reading. Get to the real issues. I’m sure you’ve heard of some from the DRUDGE. HAHAHAHHAHA

Obama, Clinton, McCain; is there really a difference? Is anything really going to change if we elect any of them? Sure, they talk about some minor differences, but none of them have a solid plan on how to get our country out of debt. Although they all talk about pulling our troops out of Iran, none of them are committed on bringing all of our troops home. None of them have stated we should stop trying to be the police for the whole world.
There is only one person still running that can make a difference, although he is getting major resistance even from his own party. What happens in America (economically, foreign policies, etc.) does have an impact on the rest of the world. It’s time for change. It’s time for a peaceful revolution to return our government back to what the forefathers had intended.

SOUNDS GOOD, YOU ARE A HARD WORKING BOT! I hope you change and I am so sorry I bothered you!
You need to be very careful in what you assume. I am not a HIM, A racist, an idiot or GOD forbid ever going to vote for OBAMA! Nor would I ever interpret any of your posts as highly intelligent.

What a waste of time, effort, and money (Obama is the inevitable nominee) just to appease Hillary! She is an attention addict; feverishly fighting to get just one more fix!
All-or-nothing Hillary supporters claim they will defect and vote for McCain (or not vote at all) because Hillary is an also-ran!
Is Hillary a loyal Democrat or the head of a cult?
Hillary, the Queen of Spin and a Legend in Her Own Mind!

Are Floridians Fools? lol
The tricky GOP of Fl & Mi move up the Primaries and settled with their National Party in the hope that the Dems will be in dissension. lol
Does any intelligent American feels confident that Florida will be able to run a respectable democratic General Election this November?
Floridians rank near to the bottom in education.
That is why Floridians cannot conduct a respectable campaign.
The Federal Courts should insist that foolish Floridians take help with their national campaigns.

Go Hillary 2016!

Listen fellow Democrats, it’s clear from the syntax used and patterns of typographical errors made that a number of the pro-McCain posters are the same person. In blogland, this is called trolling. String two to their bow is arguing for Hillary to run as an independent.
Someone pointed out that this would merely serve the Republicans and this is precisely why it’s advocated. Really, it’s their only chance of staying competitive. It would also destroy Hillary personally, which for them would be a bonus, because they’ve long hated her.
The fact of the matter is that Hillary wouldn’t dare run as an independent, and couldn’t afford to do so financially even if she were mad enough to try. Obama will be the nominee and will win what will effectively be a tow-horse race by some distance.
Repugs will be crying come November 5, and every reasonable person on the planet will breathe a sigh of relief at the end of the Bush years.

Obama knew ahead of time ! That hypocrite
He will lose to Mccain if he is nominated! The Republicans want him to win the nomination so they can chew him up and spit him out!

Obama is a criminal among criminal friends!
A month ago a friend of mine who knew I did not think Obama was qualified to be president, asked me what I would do if he was nominated. I replied that I would vote for him of course, what a dumb question. No more. After a month of research, I could no more support Barack Obama as the leader of this country than I could support another war profiteering Republican.
If he becomes the nominee, all the Democrats in America will be viewed by the rest of the world as either utterly stupid, or totally corrupt. Therefore, for the first time in my life, I have made a conscious decision to take a stand and not vote in a presidential election if the choice is Obama. Can Hillary even afford bus fare to Denver?

This was not democratic, it was dictatorial! I watched the whole debate, just as I have followed the whole warped campaign. I listened to Sen Bill Nelson and the passionate words of Sen Joiner and was encouraged, believing that the so called Rules Committee would get it right. I listened to Harold Ickes at the end of the debate, at a loss for words because of the total injustice. By this time I was broken hearted by the travesty of justice, because the decisions have totally negated the rights of the voters. You may think it’s unimportant, it’s only a primary, but it’s a matter of principle! DNC such a shame on you! I hope Hillary challenges this and takes it to the August Credentials Committee, because this has been a total stitch up throughout!

“We’re the ones we have been waiting for” – It is lines like this one that are such blatent BS that bring about such passion and negativity from people who do not support Obama. It isn’t racism. It is about a Marketing Campaign and “Branding” Barack Obama as the “Change” candidate who never gave specific details on how he was going to “change Washington” and “change America”. It is a shame that Hillary wasn’t Black and Barack wasn’t White – then maybe you could see through all this BS!

I hope Hillary runs as an independent. Maybe she’ll announce that today so the Democrats can move on, forward. Independents ALWAYS lose.
Obama ’08!

This is such an unnecessary mess.
Obama ’08.

If Obama had agreed to a revote, the outcome of this primary would have been all together different. But he and his campaign knew that. The people of FL and MI are the ones being punished, for someone elses error in judgement. If Obama were such a proponent of “change” he would care more about the “people” than his own political future. What a crock! My husband said he will never vote for Obama, and he will stay home in November. And now, I will too. I can’t vote for a canadate I don’t believe in anymore.
