As Rev. Wright said ” a politician does what a politician has to do.” Obama left this church 20 years too late. He needed his black street creds to anchor the black vote through the primaries but now he needs to set the table for the genral election so he jettisoned his church ties. As the daughter of an American Baptist minister, I have striven to understand all sides regarding what’s been publicized about Obama’s former church. We are white, but my father always felt what Jesus taught led directly to egalitarian views with regards to civil rights. While he chose his more words more carefully, he preached often unwelcome messages about the failings of many christians to put the love of God into practice when it came to loving all of God’s children equally. I think what attracted Barack Obama to Trinity Church was not it’s pastor per se (other than the fact that Wright was the one who led Barack to Jesus…give him credit for that). It dovetails with Obama’s concerns about those who struggle in our society, that he would be attracted to the work of this church, specifically their ministries to the poor and the sick of their community. I can see how someone who felt the social gospel “love thy neighbor’ to be one of the most important manifestations of christianity would embrace the community work that Trinity Church has done and continues to do. I can also imagine that, being an Illinois senator, and then a US senator, it was unlikely that Obama was present in the pews with any degree of regularity. His financial contributions to that church represented his support for the social ministries.
However, this spring it became obvious that Rev. Wright’s public message, for whatever reason, was more and more a message of cultural & racial division, rather than healing of race relations (and unless reads or listens to Wright’s entire history of sermons in order, one cannot know what the majority of his messages were about). When Obama, who had been giving the man who led him to Christ, the man who made this church that does so much mission work, the benefit of the doubt, heard Rev. Wright’s current pattern of speech, he had to condemn it as divisive and separate himself from Wright. This must have been hard for Obama, to see the evolution of Wrigth’s personality, and see how off the message of true christianity he had strayed. But I think that was the right decision. He continued with the church in name until the most recent event, where he had to sadly realize that at least, the church leaders were not being careful about choosing their guest speakers. But the rude and very unchristian words of the visiting Catholic priest, and the response of some of those who happened to be in the congregation that day, led Obama to realize he had to make a statement: This is not christianity as I know it. Christianity is love, and ridiculing anyone is not loving. I am proud that he stood up to this church, a church that for all it’s good works, is in danger of losing it’s bearings with regard to the gospel of love.

As a parishioner in a United Church of Christ congregation, I know our parish is always very conscientious about not making political endorsements or comments of any kind, let alone whose as brazen as the ones recently seen at Trinity.
Trinity’s congregation has done lot of good work in the community. To encourage this sort of political rhetoric from the pulpit can put all of this hard work, the good work of the parish at risk – both in the public’s mind and with regard to even the tax exempt status of the congregation.
Mr. Obama is correct in resigning from this congregation and Trinity should elect a Board that is more conscientious in preserving its good name, good spiritual assets, and goodwill.

Now that the majority of black votes have been cast, Obama, true to his nature, will move on, abandoning his church and community. They are not needed anymore.

Al Qaeda is on the run in Iraq but if the USA retreats and turns Iraq over to them, Al Qaeda will have access to Iraq’s large oil reserves and thus the means and opportunity to attack us and attack us hard. BILL MOYERS:Welcome to the Journal.
I once asked a reporter back from Vietnam, “Who’s telling the truth over there?” “Everyone,” he said. “Everyone sees what’s happening through the lens of their own experience.” That’s how people see Jeremiah Wright. In my conversation with him on this broadcast a week ago and in his dramatic public appearances since, he revealed himself to be far more complex than the sound bites that propelled him onto the public stage. Over 2000 of you have written me about him, and your opinions vary widely. Some sting: “Jeremiah Wright is nothing more than a race-hustling, American hating radical,” one viewer wrote. A “nut case,” said another. Others were far more were sympathetic to him.
Many of you have asked for some rational explanation for Wright’s transition from reasonable conversation to shocking anger at the National Press Club. A psychologist might pull back some of the layers and see this complicated man more clearly, but I’m not a psychologist. Many black preachers I’ve known — scholarly, smart, and gentle in person — uncorked fire and brimstone in the pulpit. Of course I’ve known many white preachers like that, too.
But where I grew up in the south, before the civil rights movement, the pulpit was a safe place for black men to express anger for which they would have been punished anywhere else; a safe place for the fierce thunder of dignity denied, justice delayed. I think I would have been angry if my ancestors had been transported thousands of miles in the hellish hole of a slave ship, then sold at auction, humiliated, whipped, and lynched. Or if my great-great grandfather had been but three-fifths of a person in a constitution that proclaimed, “We the people.” Or if my own parents had been subjected to the racial vitriol of Jim Crow, Strom Thurmond, Bull Connor, and Jesse Helms. Even so, the anger of black preachers I’ve known and heard about and reported on was, for them, very personal and cathartic.
That’s not how Jeremiah Wright came across in those sound bites or in his defiant performances this week. What white America is hearing in his most inflammatory words is an attack on the America they cherish and that many of their sons have died for in battle ? forgetting that black Americans have fought and bled beside them, and that Wright himself has a record of honored service in the Navy. Hardly anyone took the “chickens come home to roost” remark to convey the message that intervention in the political battles of other nations is sure to bring retaliation in some form, which is not to justify the particular savagery of 9/11 but to understand that actions have consequences. My friend Bernard Weisberger, the historian, says, yes, people are understandably seething with indignation over Wright’s absurd charge that the United States deliberately brought an HIV epidemic into being. But it is a fact, he says, that within living memory the U.S. Public Health Service conducted a study that deliberately deceived black men with syphilis into believing that they were being treated, while actually letting them die for the sake of a scientific test. Does this excuse Wright’s anger? His exaggerations or distortions? You’ll have to decide or yourself. At least it helps me to understand the why of them.
But in this multimedia age the pulpit isn’t only available on Sunday mornings. There’s round the clock media — the beast whose hunger is never satisfied, especially for the fast food with emotional content. So the preacher starts with rational discussion and after much prodding throws more and more gasoline on the fire that will eventually consume everything it touches. He had help — people who for their own reasons set out to conflate the man in the pulpit who wasn’t running for president with the man in the pew who was.
Behold the double standard: John McCain sought out the endorsement of John Hagee, the war-mongering Catholic-bashing Texas preacher who said the people of New Orleans got what they deserved for their sins. But no one suggests McCain shares Hagee’s delusions, or thinks AIDS is God’s punishment for homosexuality. Pat Robertson called for the assassination of a foreign head of state and asked God to remove Supreme Court justices, yet he remains a force in the Republican religious right. After 9/11 Jerry Falwell said the attack was God’s judgment on America for having been driven out of our schools and the public square, but when McCain goes after the endorsement of the preacher he once condemned as an agent of intolerance, the press gives him a pass.
Jon Stewart recently played a tape from the Nixon White House in which Billy Graham talks in the oval office about how he has friends who are Jewish, but he knows in his heart that they are undermining America. This is crazy; this is wrong — white preachers are given leeway in politics that others aren’t.
Which means it is all about race, isn’t it? Wright’s offensive opinions and inflammatory appearances are judged differently. He doesn’t fire a shot in anger, put a noose around anyone’s neck, call for insurrection, or plant a bomb in a church with children in Sunday school. What he does is to speak his mind in a language and style that unsettle some people, and says some things so outlandish and ill-advised that he finally leaves Obama no choice but to end their friendship. We are often exposed us to the corroding acid of the politics of personal destruction, but I’ve never seen anything like this ? this wrenching break between pastor and parishioner before our very eyes. Both men no doubt will carry the grief to their graves. All the rest of us should hang our heads in shame for letting it come to this in America, where the gluttony of the non-stop media grinder consumes us all and prevents an honest conversation on race. It is the price we are paying for failing to heed the great historian Jacob Burckhardt, who said “beware the terrible simplifiers”.

An enemy who cheered 9/11 , provided aid to Hamas , and who every intelligence agency reported had WMDs. Thus Iraq was invaded. So again, if Obama had gotten his way, Saddam would still be in power and most probably in possession of nukes along with Iran so the US and the West would be dealing with TWO major middle eastern powers in possession of nukes and ready and willing to attack the US. Think WWIII. Is that what you would prefer, Paul? Than go ahead and vote for Obama.

Leaving the church now that it’s politically expedient to do so, instead of leaving twenty years ago, is a joke. How is it possible that extricating himself from racism, anti-Semitism, and divisive dogma never occurred to Obama before today.
Obama’s spiritual friends are the most racist and immoral people on Gods green earth- Father Pfleger, Rev. Wright, Rev. Farrakhan, and Louis Meeks. All of these men are as antithetical to the spirit of divine love and goodness as it’s possible to be. They are racist, anti-Semitic, and anti-American. These unscrupulous people have Obama as their common denominator. They’ve also been Obama’s close friends for many years, but it’s only now when he wants to clinch the Democratic nomination that he suddenly doesn’t agree with their racist positions.
If Obama didn’t agree with Wright’s, Farrakhan’s and Pfleger’s vicious black supremacist and racist rants then why did he donate over twenty thousand dollars of his own money to the church, and earmark over two hundred thousand dollars for Pfleger’s church?
There’s an obvious pattern of racism among so many of Obama’s close friends, and there’s also a pattern of anti-American sentiment among Obama’s family and friends, as evidenced by such gems as domestic Weathermen terrorists Bill Ayers and Bernadine Dohrn, Hamas’ terrorist Hatem El-Hady, and PLO member and notorious anti-Semite Rashid Khalidi.
There’s also a pattern of corruption associated with Obama, including another nefarious close friend, Tony Rezko.
Finally, there’s a pattern of dirty politics such as the smear campaign and machinated elimination from the ballot Obama orchestrated against longtime activist and Illinois Senator Alice Palmer.
How many more racists, anti-Semites, anti-Americans, terrorists, and crooks do we need to discover surrounding Obama before the American people wake up and smell the unelectable latte?

Note that Obama did not find anything objectionable with the circus called Trinity United church, making fun of political figures, screaming over the country he wants to preside etc. He was only concerned about the curchgoers and the media maelstrom. I guess that’s part of the change the plans for America – churches are no longer for spiritual things, but can be used to make fun of political oponents, the whites and US. Gill, McCain did not sit in the pews of John Hagee’s church for twenty years or was he ever a member of McCain’s campaign team. In comparison, Obama was a member of Rev. Wright’s church for twenty years and was Obama’s official “spiritual advisor” on his campaign team. There is no comparison between the two. The question yet to be answered is does Obama believe in the Black Liberation Theology teachings of the Trinity church that he was a member of for twenty years?

What I find appalling is a pastor making fun of anybody from the pulpit!!

First, McCain’s mostly white baptist church is not receiving this level of scrutiny. I doubt religion is any part of his life worth noting by the way he dodges the issue, then hooks up with Hagee and Parsley and LaHaye (and there are others…)
Second, It feels to me as if Obama is setting the stage for taking Hillary on as his VP. When she made the RFK assassination comment, he not only did not indulge, but he instructed his staff and bloggers to avoid attacking Hillary any further than had at that point. And what makes him leave the church? An attack on Hillary which he personally took as the final straw…three strikes, etc.
I don’t think he loses his black support at all. There are those of us who feel if others don’t know how to behave, or when to be on their best behavior, that they must be left alone. Trinity, Wright, Pfleger, Moss…they morally support Chicago’s south side. But I suggest there are better, more uplifting, more efficient, and less controversial ways to improve lives than Trinity or organizations like it may be currently doing.
Yeah, it’s time for a very big change.

Obama in the press conference said he was surprised how much attention the church got and that was one of things that come up in campaigns that took him by surprise. But this contradicts how before he ran for president his advisors and obama and his wife contemplated leaving the church for political reasons but didn’t because it would look too political.

I want to apologize for my earlier post (at May 31, 2008 6:33:32 PM). I made a comment that may lead people to question Barack Obama’s religious faith. After reading the facts, I now understand that he has never been a Muslim… and is a committed Christian. My apologies to Barack Obama, his family, and his supporters.

I would feel more comfortable with Obama if he had been a force within his church in advocating that you can be proud of your African-American heritage without trashing white folk, jews and America. However, he did not speak up, he went along for the ride with his family for 20 years. He only pulled away at each stage as it became politically expedient. What’s most worrisome is that his candidacy seemed to embolden and even fire up the hatemongers like Wright, Pflegher and Farrakhan as if their hateful worldview was triumphing through Obama.

Our Middle Eastern allies will have no reason to trust our word and abandon us. Not to mention the boost a withdrawal from Iraq will give to Iran, Syria and Hamas. The rule is the first one to reach 2118 delegates wins the democratic nomination. No one will reach this number by the end of the last primaries. There’s no such rule that whoever gets the majority of delegates, wins. That’s where the popular vote comes in along with the other factors to be considered. That’s the job of the superdelegates to make a wise decision to come up with a nominee who can best balance the results from electoral map, popular vote, gallaup polls on various voting groups, gallup polls on running against McCain. Also, they should now look at the resumes of each candidate and the depthness of their knowledge on economic policies, foreign policies and national security. Who can best beat McCain not by a whisker or smaller margin but by a reasonable margin. Scared Pelosi should be fired from DNC since she doesn’t know the real job of a superdelegate. If these superdelegates are marred by subjectivesness and the idea of just basing the nomination on the majority of delegates alone then the democratic party will be in a shaky position by November.
THE SUPERDELEGATES HAVE TO DO THEIR JOB INTENSLY AND COMPREHENSIVELY WHILE THERE’S TIME. THEIR DECISION WILL COST THEIR POSITIONS WHEN THE TIME COMES WHEN PEOPLE WILL IN TURN DECIDE TO VOTE THEM BACK TO THEIR POSITIONS. Rezko’s partners son was given a job as an intern for Obama. Rezko raised huge sums of money for Obama thru fundrasiers and bundling. Obama pays him back by writing a series of letters to assist Rezko in getting state funding for projects in Obamas district. That is a political favor whether or not Obama and his cronies say so. That is how it works in Chicago, they call it pay to play here. Then Rezko once again helps Obama by buying the lot next door so Obama can get $300,000 off the price. Without Rezko Obama would not have been able to afford the property. This kind of stuff happens all the time here in Chicago. No one is shocked. This is business as usual on Cook County. Do you really believe that this is all just a coincidence. That he pays 20% under the asking price while his longest poltical “friend” just happens to buy the adjoining lot with him. Also there just happens to be letters from Obama to help secure state funding of $14 million for Rezko’s company.

Crown, a longtime Obama supporter who has raised at least $200,000 for his presidential campaign, is a director of General Dynamics, and his family has a large investment in the company. The request ultimately resulted in $1.3 million in funding for the project.

A few days ago, when writing about Barack Obama’s recent interviews with staff members of the Chicago Tribune and the Chicago Sun Times about his involvement with Tony Rezko, I quoted this segment of the Chicago Sun Times interview:
Is Rezko still a friend? “Yes,” Obama said, “with the caveat if it turns out the allegations are true, then he’s not who I thought he was, and I’d be very disappointed with that.”
And it’s that friendship, Obama said, that probably kept him from realizing it was a mistake to enter into a real estate deal with Rezko.
“Probably because I’d known him for a long time, and he’d acted in an aboveboard manner with me,” he said. “And I considered him a friend. … It’s further evidence that I’m not perfect.”
Obama had a 17 year friendship with Rezko but never saw any signals or flags that Rezko might be unsavory, to put it politely.
Now we have Jeremiah Wright, Obama’s pastor of 20 years, the man who married him, baptized his children and whose sermons he attended as a member of the Church. Obama was so taken with one of Wright’s sermons he titled his book “Audacity of Hope” after it. But Obama now says he had no idea about the inflammatory nature of Wright’s sermons that came to light this week and he never attended any. [More...]
This is a second significant, almost 20 year long relationship in Barack Obama’s relatively short adult life in which he now says he was clueless about things that should have leapt out at him.

Ayers would even donate money to one of Obama’s political campaigns.
Arguably, none of this would matter if Ayers and Dohrn had long ago repudiated their violent extremism. But they have always refused to apologize for their monstrous behavior. “We weren’t extreme enough in fighting against the war,” Ayers told the Chicago Tribune in 2001. In a memoir published that year, he exulted: “Everything was absolutely ideal on the day I bombed the Pentagon.” America, he said after Sept. 11, “is not a just and fair and decent place. . . . It makes me want to puke.”
Is this Obama’s idea of “respectable” and “mainstream” political thinking? If so, doesn’t that tell us something about his judgment and standards?
The day after New Year’s 1996, operatives for Barack Obama filed into a barren hearing room of the Chicago Board of Election Commissioners.
There they began the tedious process of challenging hundreds of signatures on the nominating petitions of state Sen. Alice Palmer, the longtime progressive activist from the city’s South Side. And they kept challenging petitions until every one of Obama’s four Democratic primary rivals was forced off the ballot.
Palmer served the district in the Illinois Senate for much of the 1990s. Decades earlier, she was working as a community organizer in the area when Obama was growing up in Hawaii and Indonesia. She risked her safe seat to run for Congress and touted Obama as a suitable successor, according to news accounts and interviews.
But when Palmer got clobbered in that November 1995 special congressional race, her supporters asked Obama to fold his campaign so she could easily retain her state Senate seat.
Obama not only refused to step aside, he filed challenges that nullified Palmer’s hastily gathered nominating petitions, forcing her to withdraw.
