Closing Arguments: Your Thoughts on Four Dollar Gas
The average price for gas in this country is now over four dollars a gallon. But it’s not just the United States that’s hurting. Tens of thousands of truckers in Spain, France and Portugal are protesting fuel prices by blocking roadways, even smashing windshields. It’s hard to believe it could get any higher — but what do you think?

my first concern is who is making all the money follow the trail.—–next why after approx 40 years since oil embargo 1972 i cannot believe do we not have far more efficient vehicles–we can get from other countryies but run into all kinds of government roadblocks—if a country as brazil can do away with foreign dependance–why cannot the usa–government is too involved in everything with worthless controlls and has never invested enough in alternate fuels–now we have no other choice as we are facing economic ruin.

It will go higher; plan for the flood so you don’t drown.
On the other hand, it is clearly a bubble in the making. It’s probably safe to short oil at $150/barrel but I’ll probably wait until $175/barrel.

I would like to know what have our Political leaders been doing before we had a Presidential race? We rely on the people we vote for to look after our interests and we always find that all too often its their own interests their looking after? Somebody sold the American people out, how did we get so dependent on foreign oil? All our leaders do is talk about it during campaigns, and as soon as their elected they cave in to special interests leaving the American people feeling out in the cold.Personally I have had enough of Politicians, enough talk lets see some action!

It Stinks….peoples salaries are not keeping up with the high prices at the pump. Something has to give before a civil war starts in the United States over oil prices.

We should be drilling in ANWR and off both coasts. I hope everyone now sees the need for an active energy program. If they don’t see the need I hope they will get a picture of the porcupine caribou and gaze at it dreamily when they pay their bills.

we had cars in the fifties that got around 40 to 45 miles per gallon this when gas was 27 cents a gallon yet todad 30 mpg is supposed to be super.
what a crock the oil companies have controlled our government as do other special interests

Gas prices are a part of the cost of Iraq War:
Aside from the over 4,000 dead and tens of thousands of US troops injured–let alone their “uninjured” relatives the flawed invasion has other costs.
One other example of the economic burden of the flawed invasion of Iraq. Our military presence in Iraq alone accounts for almost 10% of US consumption. Summarized from AP:
The U.S. consumes about 21 million of the world demand of 86 million barrels of oil per day.
The Defense Department is the nation’s single largest user of energy. At 1.6 million gallons a day in Iraq, the war alone accounts for over 7.6% of US demand. If we were to account for total military, let alone government usage we would be over 10% at least.
Getting out of Iraq would cut our consumption almost 10% and likely cut prices too. Iraq is guaranteed consumption at this point.
There was no Al-Qaeda in Iraq until we went then and opened up the borders. Iran was a power but it was contained by Iraq. Sadam was a dictator with evil crazies related and working with him but his people didn’t live in the hell that exists now or over the past few years.
[Put that in your pipe and smoke it.]

if you had a car that gets 100 mpg it would be same as paying1.00 per gallon.
german company will produce a car diesel 120 to 157 mpg –try to bring it into this country–and yes it will run on vegi oil.all the drilling in alaska would put a bandaid on for approx 15 years.and then what

There are 65 years of known recoverable oil reserves in the 48 contiguous states. This does not include oil shale(150 years) or an elephant field just found in the Dakotas. It might lower the price per gallon if we used this.

Is the Middle East safer because of the invasion? No.
Are we in danger of losing Afghanistan due to troops being misplaced in an ill-conceived war with an ad hoc battle plan. Yes.

Saddam Hussein was not killing Iraqis at nearly the rate they have been dying. The people there had electricity, gas, shelter and food. Sanitation was much better and most people did not live in fear of being kidnapped or attacked by packs of wild dogs. Christians could go to church on Sundays without fear of being blown up.
Speaking as if you know is not the same as knowing. But I give you points, Spugee, on your wit.

It’s fairly simple-
If you belong to the backbone of any country , you’re getting screwed.
Oddly, the brains all think that without the backbone, they can survive.
It trulu is disgusting- watching one unit of an essential bond be so disrespectful of what actually provided them their revenue and existence. EXISTENCE.
The comapnies are playing hardball. I say everyone stack up on some Spam and canned chicken and let those a holes figure out who needs who when we don’t show up for work.
Life is about balance- the poor need the rich as much as THE RICH NEED THE POOR.
Whata bunch of idiots.

It is becoming apparent that drastic measures must be implemented to save, not only our economy, but world-wide starvation. Right now, our military uses as much oil as the country of Greece; 350,000 barrels of oil each and every day. Eighty-one million barrels are pumped out of the earth each day. It can only last just so long. Is it 5 years? Is it 7 years? It is high time that certain curtailments of unnecessary use of oil be implemented. Congress should immediately limit all frivolous flights of the military’s airplanes and helicopters-pronto. This should include disbanding the Blue Angels and Thunderbirds and all air-shows until we can drill a bottomless oil pocket.

I think we should park the congressional limosines and make Obama walk to all his speeches carrying his teleprompter. The people should make Pelosi quit wearing petroleum based make-up and tell Harry Reid to direct his hot air toward electrical generation. We should also make the Air Force ride tricycles and make the navy paddle its boats. Now there is a well thought out solution.

Is it because our oil companies own our government and media? I watch a news report on Neil young putting an eletric engine in his 50′s Thunderbird that had a small gas generator and went from 10 miles to the gallon to 100 and Aronold put a 40,000 engine in his hummer and when from 10 miles a gallon to 40. It’s over. The prices will continue to go up and we are no longer able to control our own government. We are at the mercy of other countries…they cut the oil supply off and we die. Not literally, but our economy dies.
I think we need some new interventions and the USA needs to change it’s attitudes. Stop buying stupid hummers and freaking cars that can float if you drive in the river.

Bottom line, the Iraq war is the biggest tax increase ever placed on Americans. Think about it, the republicans have created a mess that has resulted in extreme fuel and food cost other ills to numerous to mention. A case could be made that voting for a republican is unpatriotic.

The solution is simple and will not be done while an oilman is president. Tell the saudi’s good luck defending yourself. We are pulling out of our Saudi base and you are on your own to defend yourself unless you start speeding up production of oil or we will deal with whoever takes over your country. Believe me they will cooperate. Iraq we are pulling out of there unless compensated for securiity we are providing at one billion a week in security and rebuilding. Iraq is the 2nd largest oil producing nation give us oil in exchange. Build nuclear power plants now. Hell the world could use a few more homer simpsons LOL

$4 a gallon. It’s digging deeper into the pockets of the middle class and the poor, yet the oil execs still post record profits. It’s also adding to the problems of a struggling economy. Eventually the middle class will become the poor and eventually be wiped from the face of the planet because it will just simply be to expensive to survive. But wait… isn’t that what the uppercrust of society wants? All of the poor and homeless exterminated? Has anyone checked into the viabiliity of the “Moe-Joe Cell”? you plug it into your elertical outlet and for 4.00 in eletricity a compressor charges the tanks you can have high pressure compressors put into gas stations too. congress will find a why for them not to come here because they are owned by the oil companies. why do you think they were invented in france? cuz the oil company does not own thier government.

we will not get out of a recession till we get off oil. oil is not going back down no matter how much you drill (we have passed peak production) india and china are just coming online and will be the great consumers. oil will be 7.00 in two to three years if not sooner

A major reason for the spike in oil prices is the falling dollar. Had the dollar maintained parity with the Euro, crude oil would be roughly $90 per barrel now. Sooner or later the Federal Reserve will have to have to raise interest rates in order to defend the dollar. I just hope we don’t have to re-live the 1970s before the Fed realizes this.
Posted by: Gary | June 10, 2008, 1:18 am 1:18 am
There is 200 years of oil in Canada’s tar sands, 150 years in oil shale. They each can be lifted for aroud $35.00 per barrel. Congress stands in the way.
Posted by: Spugee | June 10, 2008, 1:18 am 1:18 am
The dollar is falling because we are sending so many overseas to buy oil. Nobody needs anymore dollars.

LG, you obviously just started thinking about this issue. Bush/Cheney have nothing to do with Congress screwing this up for 30 years.

You’re only proving it took bush/cheney 6 years to do what congress could not do in 30, yeah I see your point.

As long as the media keeps talking about rising gas prices and telling that they are going up the oil co. are going to see that we are expecting it and keep raising prices!! Look at history as soon as we stop taking about it they will level off like they always have!!!

Maybe ABC should do an article on why our elected officials are not really doing anything about the GAS problem? I realize that one faction is on the way out and a new group of professional actors are about to take over, but that doesn’t mean the current politicians should just stop and say, oh we’ll let the next shift worry about the problem. By the way what about an article about where we are really getting the majority of our oil from. Depending on who you listen to, we are using our own. Well if we can put price controls on everything else why don’t our politicians grow a back bone and tell ALL of the oil companies how much they can charge. We tell utility Companies how much they can charge, why not tell Oil Companies?

It upsets me that we are being told that we are no longer “allowed” to have out-of-town friends, but it’s even worse when we don’t know WHO is telling us!
During the Nixon era, there was a persistent rumor that the government was considering “travel cards” like the Soviet Union used, and anyone who wanted to leave their “home area” would need permission in the form of a travel permit. Such trips would be limited to specific destinations and dates with the reason for the trip clearly stated before the permit would be issued.
The rumor may or may not have been true, but now they’ve found a way to accomplish almost the same thing, and we’re all going along with it.
The new rule is much simpler: Stay home or go broke.

But it’s OK… as President, Obama has a couple of “plans”. The first one is to raise taxes on the oil companies. Now THERE is a brilliant idea! Who does he think will end up PAYING those increased taxes?! WE will!
The other “plan” involves changing laws, such as repealing any he doesn’t like, including the Law of Supply and Demand.
Perhaps at some point, Obama will notice that America has made China and India wealthy enough so that more of their citizens can own cars instead of bicycles.
But on the positive side, maybe our next President will recognize something which Bush refuses to acknowledge: the Saudis are NOT our “allies” or our friends!

As Jay Leno so appropriately joked about it the other night:
Democrats don’t want to drill for oil here….and they said it won’t be available anyway until 10 years…..the same thing they were saying 10 years ago…
Exactly. Thank you democrats for screwing yet another thing up.

It would ALMOST be fun to allow Obama to be president so the Obamabots could see that there is NOTHING he could do about all these problems they’re always complaining about (especially the gas price problem).
However the whackjob judges he’d appoint to the SC and across the land isn’t worth the “fun” it would be to watch him fail miserably.
So McCain it is.

It’s $8.50 in UK – you guys in US have gas at bargain basement level.

Well fellow american citizens is about time we all wake up.
I’ve lived in three different continents, travel overseas when I can so my vision of the world is a little different / open. For the longest many countries don’t like the US and will go to the extent to harm us, are we going to let it be?
Many of the comments above bring good points. What are we doing? Are we going to give our country away? Where is our pride? I remember when MADE IN USA meant something.
Detroit: start building more fuel efficient cars, small displacement diesel engines get excellent MPG, Europe has 60 % of its cars running that way (we even build Jeeps for the European market with diesel powerplants). May not be the solution to the problem but we’ll use less of it until we develop new technologies. I understand that is all business but we need to turn it around to our advantage.
We need to start using the oil we have been saving for the future, even sell some to balance our debt / international deficit.
Speculation probably right now is also what’s driving prices up. We need to hurry up and get back on track, we may not be able to stop China from becoming the world number one leader but I am sure we can slow them down. Gasoline still cheaper in the US than other parts of the world, complaining will not do much unless we also start changing our ways,if you can drive a smaller car do so, stay away from the gas guzzlers. Lets start thinking about the future of our country. The more gas we use, the more money the petroleum companies make, is all business but we need to be smarter.
This is an economic warfare and asian countries have been winning for a long time now. Look at history, does anybody look back at Japan in the 50′s; look at them now, we even allow them to build cars on our soil and they laugh at us. Shame on me for driving a fuel efficient japanese car and a german motorcycle.
Come on guys this is the land of the free the home of the brave, we must not forget that.

You have two oil men in the White House and a Congress that is totally inept. They played right into big oils hands when they did not force car makers to build efficient cars and we let them tear up our railroads so that everything ships my truck, which is the most inefficient way to move things. Compare the tons moved per mile by a train compared to a truck. Our politicians better do something really fast as this economy is going to crash & burn.

You people are whining about what’s going on in our country. It’s your fault. Instead of buying American, you buy foreign. Look at WalMart; over 75% of their products sold come from RedChina. You follow politicans who listen to those nutcases enviornmenalists and those fools fom hollywood such as Oprah, etc. There is a large oil field off the coast of Santa Barbara, Calif. that the leftwingers shut down because the oil might leak and ruin the beaches. Wait until Hussein gets in office, he’ll tax you silly and you’ll be walking. Start learn arabic, people.
Posted by: Russ | June 10, 2008, 7:50 am 7:50 am
It’s made life more difficult for lots of people, but I think it is forcing many to rethink how they go about their daily lives: consolidating trips, walking when possible, taking public transportation. We need to invest in renewable energy and developing more fuel-efficient cars. Drilling for more oil is not the answer. Once the oil supply is gone, it’s gone. We replaced our old car (200,000+ miles) that got reasonably good mileage with a used hybrid last year.

This is a world wide phenomenon. Petro is up in price everywhere.
Meanwhile, the US sets on enough oil to be independent of the world market but the greenies remain in charge.
Think it’s high now? Wait until the dems tax the oil companies and those taxes are passed along to users.
Posted by: Surelock Homes | June 10, 2008, 8:23 am 8:23 am
enough talk. Congress needs to put the pre-enron controls back on trading. The investors do not want to earn their money, they want to steal it .
What good is your money when the world economy collapses. Even Harry Smith won’t let certain people finish their reasonable solutions if he doesn’t agree with them. Until we can learn once again to respect one another and put the people of the country first, nothing can be fixed.

Gas in Great Briton: $10.25/US Gallon.

I think it is shameful that our government isn’t doing more. The general public cannot stand much more. Between the gas, the untility rates, and food costs, it is getting harder and harder to make it each week. I don’t know where this will all end, but it is really hurting familys. Someone has to do SOMETHING!!!

Why is everyone comapring us to other countrys. The US is supposed to be the greates power in the world and we are being brougt to our kness by small Arab nations. We should have been getting other fuels in prcess back in the 70′s when this all began ,but due to greed , here we are again. Sad…
Posted by: truthtell | June 10, 2008, 8:59 am 8:59 am
Russ….are you calling Obama an Arab? YOu so stupid. Wait until McCain gets in and we’ll see corporations making even more profits and the middle calss gone. Plus we will be in a never ending war…GET REAL

MIke..you are SO right. I think people willhave to start organizing protests at rhe capitol. Our legislators are so entangled with the oil companies it is sickening. What about the people they took an oath to serve?
Posted by: newera | June 10, 2008, 9:06 am 9:06 am
you mean McBush as he will do the same thing bush does. and anyone who thinks we need more oil when there are alternatives that are green are missing the opportunities. Brazil’s government made laws in 70′s to get off oil and look how they are doing. more oil is not the answer
Posted by: Kraze E. Viking | June 10, 2008, 9:32 am 9:32 am
This hurts badly.
In 1999, it was discovered that North Dakota had a major oil reserve. Estimates are that there is enough oil to provide US consumption for 20 years.
In 2001, Bush, Cheney, and several top Republicans held a closed door meeting with top oil executives. Since that meeting, gas has gone up 400%.
In 2008 these same oil executives realized it was likely the Republicans would lose the presidency (and veto power). Miraculously, they decided it’s time to stop claiming they need Alaska and Florida coastal region opened up. They have started drilling in North Dakota and America’s first oil refinery in 30 years has been approved.
It’s amazing what happens when an industry fears they will no longer be able to hide behind the president.
Posted by: Dan | June 10, 2008, 9:47 am 9:47 am
We set back for too long and let people pass laws saying don’t drill for oil here, there or anywhere in the U. S.(but they didn’t stop using oil from somewhere else) and don’t build new and efficient refineries. Now foreign oil has taken us hostage financially while they make billions. We have given them a monopoly at our expense. Alternative fuels are great but they aren’t going to replace what we have overnight, or anytime real soon. We need to make our elected officials listen to what we really need and not idealism. I love getting out in the wilderness but I do have to get there first.

Of course profits are going to the oil companies. And who owns the oil companies? Ordinary folks like me who are trying to save for retirement or retirees who collect dividend checks from “Big Oil.” When politicians threaten to tax the oil companies windfall profits they are really attempting to take more hard earned money from ordinary folks like me.

WHO CARES ABOUT THE COST OF GAS? OBAMA CAN TAKE 300 PEOPLE TO EUROPE — AND HE ISN’T EVEN PRESIDENT!
I THOUGHT TO BE PRESIDENT, YOU HAD TO BE “ELECTED”? HE WASN’T EVEN “ELECTED” TO REPRESENT THE DEMOCRATS — HE WAS “SELECTED” BY THE DNC AND BIASED MEDIA.
The media is coronating Obama — Reagan and Kennedy were both “elected” before they went and spoke in Germany to the public. I think we should have the election by the Anerican people first, and then the media and should back who is elected — not who they favor. This thing in Germany, he is not speaking for the American people yet.
HOW MUCH IS THIS TRIP COSTING THE TAXPAYERS?
Barack Hussein Obama “hopes” we won’t notice how many times he’s “changed” his mind.
Why did Obama wait until he is running for President to find out what’s going on overseas?
ALL IT IS NOW IS A HUGE “PHOTO-0P” WITH THE BIASED MEDIA IN TOW.
If he cared at all about what is going on — he would have been before now — and don’t even get me started on Afghanistan — he should have been there several times — considering his committee appointment.
This man is a fake and a fraud and my only hope is that the American people wake up before it is too late. HE IS A DANGER TO AMERICA.
ANYBODY BUT OBAMA
