Closing Arguments: Politics of Fear

At the heart of tonight’s Closing Argument–a cartoon. But it’s one many are not finding funny. The latest issue of "New Yorker" magazine has this drawing as its cover. Entitled " Politics of Fear" it has Barack Obama and his wife Michelle doing a fist tap in the Oval Office. He’s in Muslim clothing and she’s armed and in camouflage. Above the mantle piece is a portrait of Osama Bin Laden. In the fireplace is a burning American flag. The magazine’s editor says they were trying to satirize the rumors about Senator Obama and his wife. Others do not see it that way. The campaign of Senator Obama called the cover "tasteless and offensive." His GOP counterpart, Senator John McCain, publicly agreed calling the drawing "inappropriate." So what do you think about all this? Is it satire or smear?

User Comments

The last time I checked, we still had freedom of speech and freedom of expression in this country. If the Obama robots don’t like it, they can find another country to hoodwink…America needs to wake up now! Obama is a fraud. No matter how much of a feel-good or novel choice he may be, he is the WRONG person at the WRONG time!

Well, it is inappropriate. The picture above the mantle should have been Ahmadinejad, not Osama. Silly New Yorker.

This goes to the Rove tactic of blowing smoke. Tell outlandish stories as way of brainwashing people. It doesn’t matter that they make no sense. The message is inside the story: example “birth certificate” means “not one of us”, as does “Hussein Obama”. “Wh*tey Tape” means “untrustworthy”, as does “under the bus “.
Repeated like a mantra, the messages soak in – how else can you explain the chorus of “THAT’S HIM!!!” in response to the New Yorker cover?
Enough smoke and people believe in the fire. In military parlance, it’s called ‘preparing the battlefield’. When the Swift Boats arrive, they swallow every drop.

The cartoon doesn’t work as satire because it isn’t over the top enough to be obviously satirical and feeds into the ugly lies that have been spread about this candidate. It is also too much to expect or hope that the kind of person who is likely to buy into the smears and also has limited critical thinking skills would get the “joke.”

On the one hand, I see the satirical work in the cover. This, of course is my “idealistic” hand, that believes that people see this for what it is. Satire. As in NOT TRUE.
On my other hand, my “rational” hand, I believe that is extremely offensive and only perpetuates the notion that is founded in many low info voters. My point is actually validated in some of the comments found on this board and others.

OH Dear, is Obama whining and complaining that the New Yorker cover is grossly misrepresenting him? Hmmmm…. considering how he misrepresents other people, he really shouldn’t be complaining. He misrepresented Bill Clinton, one of the best recent presidents, someone who advanced the cause of minorities tremendously……Obama made Bill to be a racist. So, how does it feel, Obama, to be misrepresented? You can dish it, but you can’t take it, can you? Sorry, I have no sympathy for Obama. He tosses the race card when someone stands in his way, but he whines if he is made to look negative. This is called….divine justice. Deal with it, BHO.

THAT, my dear, is the race card, calling something racist, when there is none. Bill has done so much for all minorities, he is the least racist person around. And Obama and his campaign IS whining about this cover. Deal with it, you can’t take the heat, get out of politics. It is very witty satire, and that cover will be a collector’s item.

Now now now … Barak Hussein Obama should run for the presidency of Iran, not the USA. The picture depicts him and Ms Hussein Obama in the Iranian oval office. You see, over here we pray to God and the Bible, not allah and the ignorant koran. By the way … all of this must be president Bush’s fault, as usual. In GOD we trust.

Sure, millions of Cheney as the Penguin, as a shadowy evil oil baron…that’s ALL GOOD!

It would be nice to think we still have “Free Speech” here in America.
But sadly, we are losing it, little by little.

At best, the New Yorker showed incredible naiveté and political stupidity with its ridiculous cover on the Obamas. To say it is satire is a poor rationalization of a highly dubious act. Fact is: there is nothing funny about the cover. It was completely irresponsible, not funny, disgusting.

Posted by: frank | July 15, 2008, 12:12 am 12:12 am

There is a very simple test of whether the July 21st Barry Blitt cover was simply designed to provoke thought, controversy, debate: Would The New Yorker run a comparable cover targeted at Joseph Lieberman or John McCain.
The answer is a resounding no. The New Yorker cover is racist and targeted at the one group that The New Yorker thought it could get away with treating with bias — Muslims.
Revoltingly, many of the comments on this site already illustrate just how many racists the cover is appealing to.

Senator Obama, Michelle,
Congratulations. After taking some time to ponder this New Yorker cover, you have now had a taste of what it feels like to be President George W. Bush and endure the ignorant visceral hatred he faces every day from your political allies.
Do you think you can deal with it as graciously as President Bush does?

Posted by: bill | July 15, 2008, 12:14 am 12:14 am

The New Yorker cover is doing great harm to Obama. It is satire to those “sophisticated” readers of the New Yorker, but truth to so many more.
The last time I checked, readers of the New Yorker could not elect a President. In this instance, the “sophisticated” publishers, writers, and artists at the New Yorker should have checked with the mainstream before circulating such a cover.

This cartoon is an example of sabotage, not satire. If this were a cartoon of McCain in a senior citizens home with George Bush as his puppet master, everyone would be upset. This is America, and free speech is a poor excuse for this sort of hatred. It’s one thing to dislike a candidate, but to try and connect him to terrorist like Bin Laden is insulting.

The cover was rather tactless, but – ironically – was meant to expose the idiocy of the neo-conservative and republican supporters among us, who actually trade this kind of garbage among themselves and, worse, actually believe it. And – sure enough – they’re here, on the ABC message boards, telling us to fear Obama. An impartial observer would have to conclude that Americans are among the least well-educated, least intelligent, and most gullible and easily manipulated people on the planet. I’m not a supporter of Obama, by the way, nor McCain, nor any of the other folks offered up by our corrupt political system.

Since there is a faction of the American public that is so stupid as to believe the things being spoken of in the cartoon, do you really think they understand the concept of satire? Those who do not even know what the New Yorker magazine is about will see it as a confirmation of their beliefs and only help perpetuate this stupidity. Do you think they will go beyond the front cover? For that reason alone, I think the magazine has crossed a line. It has helped to fuel a fire that should be put out.

at a time like this when america is involved in two wars with islamic radicals this is no time to be joking .

Posted by: mred1943 | July 15, 2008, 12:19 am 12:19 am

The New Yorker never should have published this cover. Somethings are out of bounds for satire. What part is funny? That some people think that Obama is a Muslim, or that some people think that all Muslims are terrorists? Satire is for things that we can change. What would have made the cartoon satire is a bunch of ill-informed people in the cartoon trying to make a connection between Obama and militant Muslims. But Obama himself cannot change his parentage, and no one gets to make fun of any part of ourselves that we cannot change, even when the implied joke is on the unseen audience.

Posted by: Cindy | July 15, 2008, 12:19 am 12:19 am

I suppose it’s as funny as millions thought Orson Welles was on October 30th 1938 broadcase of War of the Worlds was when they found out it was a hoax. As funny as now the historic pictures of a black man being hung while children and their parents had picnics around the event. Are maybe as funny as a Charles Manson party where they raided a home and killed the inhabitants. There are some things in life no matter how you draw them; it’s just not funny. I know some of the points I’m making are extreme; however the satire was extremely not funny.

What I’d like to day to the New Yorker:
“How could you print such a “cartoon”? It was so so UNfunny! Don’t you know that your cover just confirms what at least ½ of the US population believes? . . . In showing Obama as a Muslim you have confirmed this unfounded belief. Showing Michelle Obama as a terrorist just made their day…and Bin Laden on the wall?????? You have played right into the hands of the ignorant right- wingers that gave us Bush for 8 years.
Are you so lost in the canyons of NYC that you are oblivious to the fearful and misinformed rest of the country?”
I literally gasped when I saw the “cartoon” on TV….All I could think was:
”The new Yorker??? What is going on? How could they be so stupid????”
So I still ask:….”How could they be so stupid and . . . so out of touch …and so not not funny….?? Carl Rove has nothing on them!”

It is shocking to see that such a notable recognized magazine in an American city and not just any American city but a multicultural diverse city like none other in the US, the city of New York would stoop to such a low level of racism. What kind of example are we to the rest of the world? I see this kind of ignorance is just what will cause a race war in this good old innocent do no evil America. Guess what? The Black Americans have been hated on, terrorized by fire bombs thrown into houses, burning crosses, hung in nooses on trees, raped, dragged behind trucks and constant unnecessary police brutality, and the list could go on, even In this enlightened year of our Lord 2008. I have one word for it: disrespectful. Yes, we have free speech but that magazine and other news outlets do not respect people anymore. This shows where our society has gone in the last 50 years which is down the drain. This is what happens to a society of less God and more freedom to do whatever you want.

Why all of a sudden is it racial? America has allowed this to go on since its birth. It’s called

If we really want racial equality then we cannot opress white Preseidents or Presidential candidates

i find all of these comments to have a string of truth in them. even though i am not a huge fan of obama’s, and have yet to determine if i really trust him, i do feel that he is the better candidate. i think freedom of speech or not, that this cover is incendiary and does not approach satire very well at all. particularly at this point in time. the world is whack enough and the editors of the new yorker are either completely naive to what they are helping to create, or just very greedy, knowing it will sell millions. they have used very poor judgement indeed. i personally feel that the united states will experience a state of marshal law (republican coupe if barack wins) in late november/early december. another “terrorist” attack, maybe??

In response to Chad Olsen:
Obama was raised/exposed during part of his childhood to the Muslim religion, with his stepfather in Indonesian. I guess that is why he said in his bio his hometown was in Indonesia.
However, he converted 20 years ago and became Christian. I don’t think he nor his mother’s family was really any religion before that from what I understand of what he says.

The New Yorker magazine is owned by Samuel,Donald and Theodore Neuhaus, aka Newhouse, zionist, pro israel jews who want to drive a wedge between white voters and Obama. A win by McCain will result in further deaths of US military in Iraq protecting Israel. The cartoon is racist, zionist and slanderous.Would a similar cartoon be seen in a jew owned magazine if the subjects were jews? NO.

The reason people really think these sort of things is because of his name and nationality. It’s not ignorance when someone with a Middle Eastern name is running for President 7 years after those with the same decent attacked and killed thousands of our citizens. Maybe he’s not of the muslim faith, but by name he is of the muslim decent, and its only normal for Americans to be weary. Maybe he is Christian and loves America and this and that-but are we to believe everything a politican says as fact? Everyone is acting like those who believe otherwise are ignorant, racist, and hateful-but maybe those who blindly believe something on the basis of what one politican says as fact-mind you with zero track record-are the ones who are ignorant. Lets just hope you left wings are all right-on his patriotism anyways-I know you’re not on policy.

The economy is in a mess, joblessness, foreclosures, bank failures and the cost of living, i.e., food; gas etc. going through the roof. Afghanistan is blowing up and the Iraqi’s are asking us to leave! What a mess!
Those who cannot understand that desperate times call for desperate measures have no clue about the hope that some of us see in Obama. Yes the cover is offensive, but by tomorrow it will be old news. I have never seen so many who want to keep riding the same horse after having been kicked off and kicked in the teeth. Enough is enough. The day after the Presidential election we will all still be Americans, regardless who wins.

It’s disgusting in these times of crisis in the U.S. all The New Yorker can think of is to put a drawing of our democratic nominee and his wife on the cover that undermines all the good things that they stand for.It is not a humorous or intellectual cover , it is in the worst taste and shows a lack of respect for your readership. Needless to say I hope everyone that has been offended will cancel their subscription. It seems the only way to show our indignation these days is to hit them in the where it hurts, show them no more money.

Obama, as any presidential contestant, is a big boy and can handle smear or satire, deserved or not. What is repulsive in this cartoon is another scene of our flag being burned and this time by a US senator. How far do we need to go in the name of humor? Where is the respect for our country and its process of democracy?

Posted by: Diana | July 15, 2008, 12:29 am 12:29 am

Again we have people exploiting the ambiguity of “freedom of speech”. David Walker wrote of the injustices associated with the mistreatment of Negroes, but was not afforded the ability to exercise the same freedoms. So it would appear as though time has changed, but things have not.
We live in a country where people generally stick with their own kind. We may shout ‘I AM AN AMERICAN” on the mountain top, but the lack of unity and lack of respect for one another is the very reason that people tag themselves as AFRICAN-american. Harsh communication such as this, does send a message to blacks, that totally trusting EUROPEAN-Americans is something to strongly consider.

I must say one more thing. Vote for the candidate that will best protect us from the evil people out there that want to get the US. Obama wants to negotiate with them which will never work and has never worked in history. One person comes to mind, Neville Chamberlain. He had a signed peace agreement that was broken by the Nazi’s shortly thereafter. McCain will protect us better than Obama. Obama is too weak on foreigh affairs. His words are worthless. Look at his stances and platform for what he really stands for. He will bring the wrong change to the presidential office.

The cover is tasteless. That is what is wrong in this country, the news can say and do anything and when people complain they shout “Freedom of Speech”. I think it’s time for them to stop hiding behind the Constitution. I tired of only hearing the negative about both candidates. What happened to impartiality. This is why we have G.Bush in the White House now.

That cover of the new yorker is offensive. First of all, obama is depicted in arab garb not muslim garb. I’m sick of hearing muslim=middle east…it doesn’t! there are thousands of muslims around the world, not just situated in the middle east! just because obama’s father was a muslim doesn’t mean he was a terrorist. MUSLIM DOES NOT = TERRORIST. second, every one of us has a part of history in our genes and it does not mean we are that person. what if you had a bit of german in you, does it mean you’re a nazi? wouldn’t you find that offensive because it does not stand for your morals and beliefs. I am a Muslim and just because I am does not mean i’m a terrorist. Whatever point the new yorker was trying to make missed the spot instead they smeared obama’s good name and for muslims who are trying to lead honorable lives in america.

The New Yorker drawing “Fear of Politics” is simply bigotry, because it is an attempt to impair Senator Obama’s chances of winning the election. Displaying such caricatures before the election will only reinforce the misinformation of people who are gullible.

Angie,
You are so wrong. I didn’t hear Hillary complain about sexism. That was me complaining and many like me when we heard Obama say those things. If he is not a sexist (or misogynist) he sure seemed like it to get the male vote that doesn’t consider women equal. By the way, the worst sexists are the women sexists who have no self respect or pride to pass on to their daughters.

Satire or smear? How about “truth be known”. It is an artist’s rendering of what life will be like in the White House if the uninformed people vote. Congratulations New Yorker, you hit the nail(or fraud) on the head.

Posted by: Barbara Adamson | July 15, 2008, 12:35 am 12:35 am

In re the New Yorker cover, whether one likes it or not is not even the issue. It is about damned time somebody made fun of the messiah “Obambi” — Lou Dobbs was even covering how many other satirical covers there have been of other famous political figures — guess what – they were rough, too.
None of these politiciams ever said “boo” about it. They let it roll off of them.
Now Sen. Obama and his campaign and supporters are whining and playing victims again — is he running to be Commander in Chief of the Armed Forces and leader of the free world, or Miss Congeniality?
What the heck is this?
Grow a thicker skin — this ridiculous political correctness combined with political cover given to this man the likes of which NO politician has ever enjoyed is just beyond the pale.
Unless he plans to make this a fascist state, where people no longer have freedom of speech, Sen. Obama had better realize that the honeymoon is over. It is particularly over once one is elected — about 20 minutes after the Inauguration to be exact.
If you can’t take the heat, you shouldn’t be auditioning for a job in the kitchen in the first place!
He and his campaign should get over itself. But the Inauguration part is something Sen. Obama is not gonig to have to worry about. He is unelectable. This has been clear since March when his numbers and funraising started dropping — but the DNC doesn’t want to admit it and has been fixing this for him anyway.

Posted by: Annagain | July 15, 2008, 12:36 am 12:36 am

Sure this country pays lip service to freedom of speech, but I find the cartoon reprehensible because it plays to the fears of ignorant american who are seeking any excuse to disregard Obama’s abilities to lead this country out of the hole that Baby Bush and his croonies have left the average american to dig themselves out of while they laugh at the “ignorant american” all the way to their power bank.
I have a white, male, lawyer friend who has always told me that most americans are STUPID! For the first time in my life, I agree with him. Not only are most americans stupid, they are also raising their children and grandchildren to be idiots as well.
I am ashamed of the total lack of intellect demonstrated by those who communicate their racial fears and insecurities by using the Obamas as their scapegoat.
Everyone should remember, George Bush has stuck it to the entire country; whites, blacks and the middle class, equally. Anyone who supports the ineptitudes of the Bush administration deserves exactly what they will be left with at the end of his eight year raid on america.

Posted by: Sharron Anderson | July 15, 2008, 12:36 am 12:36 am

In a day and age when our society although not admitting to it is still navigating its way through the avenues of racism, I find very appauling that magazine such as the New Yorker feed into the hype. By that I mean, do we (americans) really look that stupid or gullible? After the primary, and after so many subpliminal(spelling issue) messages of Senator Obama being a muslim as well as a host of other things and Mrs. Obama being the angry black women, they have the gull to depict them both in the images that so many americans see them as. Why can’t we focus on the topics and issues at hand. Obama is doing such a great job that they have no other alternative but to attack his character or what them deem to be his charcter. It is another scare tactic. And yes, why we say sattire and envisioned that most would find it to be a joke on the Republicans, the joke is actually on us and it continues to mimic how our society really thinks, but try to back it up with “jokes” justifying why its harmless. I myself sometimes feel that I am living in a serial moment, a time capsule; looking at two different worlds. A world where most individuals (caucasions) view myself and others no matter what our economic status and less than themselves. Even their children look at you like ????. We barely speak to one another unless we are in the work place and then we go to our own little perspective worlds. And then there’s the lost population both black and white who are homeless, substance abusers and alcholics. Them seem so out of touch, so lost and yet for the first time even those individuals are actually interested in politics. Yeah, Obama is definitely doing everything right and yes the tactics used now against him are a form of fear tactics. Its amazing how the two worlds are still so far apart. Just watching the political news reports today the difference between the Black and White responses said it all. Admist our being in the same place, we are still so far apart and I can only sum it up to life experiences coming from two different worlds. As much as we try to understand one another we (African Americans are never fully understood) and sometimes we are our own worst enemy. I hope and pray that in my life time things will change. I truly feel that Senator Obamas is trying to embark upon that change, but our long lasting inate learned feelings are holding us all back from moving towards a better future. All I can do is to continue to treat people like I want to be treated one individual at a time. Black, white, asian or in different.
Peace and Blessings

That cover was in the poorest taste of anything I’ve seen in ages. The Obamas–and all Americans–are due an apology for its offensive content. So-called “news” outlets that use untrue material, that is nonetheless believed by many improperly, only reinforces–in this case–stereotypes based on irrelevancies.
I hope ABC never shows it again–because that, too, will reinforce it. It’s called “The Big Lie.” Hitler used it. There’s no reason to use it now except for reinforcement. What a waste of good air time.
Is this going to be ABC trying to influence the vote–disguised as “news”?

I think the New Yorker’s defense of the image seems viable, though I hold judgment until after I’ve read the article accompanying the cover.
What I find offensive about the image is this, would it be so wrong for Obama to be Muslim? Or any other American? Was this country not founded on religious freedom? Can anyone other than a Christian hold office?
And what if Michelle Obama’s hair was big? Gee, is that too black? wtf is wrong with Americans? We can’t all be protestant white males. Can we try to celebrate our diversity, not demonize it?
Racism in any form is an indication of ignorance.

While freedom of speech is a very important right that Americans enjoy, there MUST be some accountability for appropriate and inappropriate speaking. This definitely seems to have crossed the line, especially since many people have expressed concerns (fact or imagined), to imply a strong connection between Obama and Bin Laden. Oh dear, why the debate on whether this art is funny? It’s not meant to be funny, it’s meant to provoke thought, and that it does, in spades. Unfortunately, too many of the reactions here erupt from simple-minded ignorance. As in Denmark, I fear the artist, and the magazine, will now bear the vitriol of those who, by accident or design, see the world in such banal, unsophisticated terms that opening their eyes or minds is a futile mission.

I will preface this by admitting that I do not affiliate with any particular political party. I don’t like any party.
But I have to say that I have noticed that when Democrats take their jabs at groups like the Republicans they have a gang mentality and act like they are so intelligent, but when another group takes a jab at the Democrats they all go crying and complaining to whoever will listen. Just the fact that this has been so blown out of proportion has guaranteed that I won’t vote Obama. I was leaning his direction but now I am afraid to have him and his wife as head of the country. If it hadn’t been made a royal issue then I would have been left leaning his direction. Obama, didn’t you learn anything on the playground??? If you don’t like free speech then head a country that doesn’t allow it. Don’t force us into a cookie-cutter world government… Carpathia.
A few more words:
Obama, what aren’t you telling us? Nobody likes a used-car salesman, which is exactly what you remind me of. You won’t be getting my vote. You strike me as a slimey whiner and your wife makes me shudder.
McCain, you don’t get what middle to lower income people are up against. Sorry, but when I can’t give up a cup of coffee I couldn’t afford to purchase in the first place, it doesn’t sound like whining, the sound you hear is rage. I hope your advisors give their maids an extra big bonus this Thanksgiving.
How about we all vote “none of the above” and start over. Why do we have to have one of these losers? This whole political system is screwed up.
The cartoon rocks, I hope the New Yorker comes up with some more great ones, rather than crumbling to the wishes of the cry babies who take themselves too seriously.

for over a month i have been saying that Hilary could still get the nomination. barack has assumed himself the presumptive nominee, but hilary has not given up her delegates, as i understand her campaign pretty much went on hold.
i agree with annagain and have thought for a long while that “…He is unelectable. This has been clear since March when his numbers and funraising started dropping — ” i also believe she has the power to carry more of the states and the popular than obama could. i think obama has some damn strong phermones flying off him that make the women want to make mad love to him and the men want to play poker with him. if the dnc and howard dean really want the whitehouse they should seriously consider hilary clinton.
shelby steele was on cspan recently talking about his book “A Bound Man: Why We Are Excited About Obama and Why He Can’t Win”. he is a black author and was talking about authenticity and how we wear masks…he said obama has quite the mask on (which i’ve always thought) and he is unauthentic. he contrasted him to harold ford http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Harold_Ford,_Jr., who he said is a truly authentic man. i met him a few years ago and heard him speak and i remember thinking I Want this man to run for office. then i met him a year later at a party, and if you want to talk about getting your panties in a tither! i should have been bold and asked him out…

Yes I am grateful for diversity, and grateful for freedom of speech-for freedom of religion-however, you cannot say it wouldnt be bad if he were muslim because that would be denying the fact that although not all muslims are terrorists-a great amount of them do in fact hate americans and a smaller amount of them are in fact terrorists-who- if you will remember came on our soil, attacked, and killed thousands of our American citizens. Let us not forget! We would hands down be the laughing stock of the world if we were to elect a muslim!(not saying Obama is-I am referring to Paulettes comment on whats so bad about a muslim president)It is what it is-we were attacked-we’re allowed to be smart. If a group of Americans were to attack and kill thousands of citizens from another country- I would be smart enough to suspect there suspicions of me if I lived there, and I would completely understand. You cannot say I am hateful or racist in speaking of muslims-most people only know those who live in America-you are uneducated if you do not understand how true muslims feel about Americans.

The New Yorker’s slanderous depiction of the Obamas is just another reminder of the unmitigated contempt that the old American establishment has for the confident African American man who dares to assert himself. When I saw this cover, I burst out laughing. It’s called “The Politics of Fear” — hello?! It’s a satire! Anyone who would actually take its imagery as fact would have to be prone to believing such disinformation. Do you think actual facts would ever dissauade such a person from his uninformed opinions?

Posted by: Latasha | July 15, 2008, 1:11 am 1:11 am

I fine The New Yorker’s cover satire of the Obamas as offensive and depict a very narrow perception open to continue interpretative character assassination. It’s a double canon. I comprehend the point The New Yorker was trying to make, but in retrospect, it adds fuel to an already explosive topic. Unfortunately, many people will only look at the cover and not read the article to fully comprehend the cover’s satire, which leaves the picture as being its only source for interpretation. The New Yorker is exploiting Obama by reinforcing stereotypes. For the sake of argument, President George W. Bush was never depicted as a caricature in a white hooded robe at a K.K.K. demonstration proclaiming the holocaust was justified. This is a very inappropriate parody The New Yorker chosen to use. I cannot help but think perhaps The New Yorker has its own personal agenda to promote such subliminal propaganda. This is extremely unfair to the presumptive Democratic Presidential Nominee.

The words satire and taste are not synonymous. If the EX-COKE HEAD CANNOT TAKE THE HEAT OF POLITICAL SATIRE, TELL MR.OBAMA FIND ANOTHER KITCHEN! The media attitude that, “oooh he’s black, we cannot say anything, or satire him. I wonder if his cocaine addiction was mommy or daddy’s mid-west values, he so gregariously espouses in commercials? Let me graciously say, an ex-addict (hopefully ex-addict) and the thought of him controlling the nations nuclear football is just plain frightening.

From the time of the Boston Tea Party satire and
news cartoons have helped readers see the lighter side of politics — i.e. Bush’s empty helmut by Trudeau.
The very nature of politics requires the candidates develop thick skin and can own up to small or large truths represented by these drawings. I say — Hooray for the New Yorker! Satire can’t just be o.k. for white candidates — I think the race card is being pulled to prevent equal opportunity ideas and creativity by using satire as presented in the New Yorker. I agree– what are you worried about? The media has already elected Obama.

I am a Utah Democrat and have heard all of the rumors this cover satirizes told to me with the same sincerity that the ever present missionaries speak of the local religion. The Republican hate machine has never sounded so shrill.

Three cheers for your Obama cover! As a patriotic (if sometimes critical) American and an enthusiastic Obama supporter, I’m thankful to live in a country which embraces satire, however harsh. I thought the cover was a riot–a perfect send up of the kind of truly frightening anti-Barack attacks cropping up all over the web and elsewhere. I’m sorry that the candidate’s campaign issued its negative statement, which only proves that Obama is imperfect. So be it; I’m still voting for him. Right now I’m going out to buy the magaizine and fill out one of the subscription cards as a gesture of support.

New Yorker readers would have gotten the cartoon since the magazine has been in the tank for Obama; however the MSM blew it up as if the magazine were Time, a journal of fact.
The magazine believes the cartoons are far from the truth, but unfortunately, the cartoons of the Obamas show an essential truth: Michelle is a thug and Obama does indeed of Muslim roots which the MSM and he are not being truthful about.
If Obama cared about the truth, he’d reveal the truth (including his birth certificate and his Muslim family associations and even his early years spent in a Muslim school; he’d mention he comes from an atheist background and that Trinity Church is not a conventional Christian church but one that fits into Obama’s basic atheism which he won’t be truthful about revealing).
So the cartoon by mistake hit on truthfulness, since Obama in no way matches the ideal put out there by his supporters and the MSM.
Too bad he’s not a big enough man to reveal the truth and then allow people to make their personal assessments when they vote.

Satire???? I think it shows a low level artest working for a spineless management. Creativity … NONE. Tasteless … YES. The best use for The New Yorker is best used in a back woods outhouse. The defenders of such “media” crap should be lined-up at that outhouse to read their mindless story tale.

It has never been appropriate to portray a presidential candidate or anyone else for that matter in a way that misleads or demeans the reader from the truth. The New Yorker’s “charicature” of Mr & Mrs Obama is totally inappropriate. Regardless of their explanation, discretion is the better part of valor. They have not lived up to this tenant of good taste and moral responsibility. Remember the Swift Boat issue?

This time they have blown it; the satire is not clear. I am a registered Republican but I dont’ think that matters in this instance because these are the very attitudes we need to deal with. I find The New Yorker’s satire cover of the Obamas as offensive, and depicts a very narrow perception, open to continue interpretative character assassination. This is a very inappropriate parody The New Yorker has chosen to use. I am tired of Obama and his hacks playing the race card. A real discourse on race relations is not a problem for most of “white America”. Don’t see any whites “bustin-out” the “white national anthem” at public events. The problem is black hold-outs from the 50′s and 60′s who still think this is Jim Crow era of the 40′s.in 2008. Folks it just ain’t so. Obama is a tremendously unqualified candidate, ex-coke head, with no real international experience. I am much more worried about the psychodynamics that led to his addiction and how it would effect his decision making in a crisis. This my friends should be enough to scare anyone away from any candidate, regardless of color.

It’s satire pure and simple. You don’t have to agree with it. It sounds like some people are ready to lynch the people at the New Yorker. This is still America. Just because Obama is the candidate who’s against Bush’s policies doesn’t mean he’s off-limits. It seems as though he and his supporters have raised him to the level of royalty. The cover graphically illustrates the chain messages that have found their way into millions of American’s e-mail. I think the people who are up in arms about this should stop and look at themselves in the mirror. They need to realize that they and Obama are not superior to everyone else and not above criticism or observation. If they can’t, stay out of politics. This country was founded on the freedom of speech. It is allowed to this very day, even if it’s against its own leaders or those hoping to be the next leader.

The cover of “The New Yorker” depicting Obama and his wife is a tastless piece of slander. I used to have respect for this magazine, but now I am disgusted with its character assassination of the Obamas. I respect free speech, but I think it comes with a responsibilty to depict the truth and take responsibility for what you print. I think Obama has a good case against “The New Yorker” for libel and slander. It is my suggestion that everyone who disagrees with the untrue depiction of the Obamas, write a letter to the editor condemning the magazine for it’s tasteless “joke” and it’s false depiction of the candidate during an election campaign. Whoever is responsible for this cruel cartoon cover should be ashamed of themselves and should apologize and retract the cover of the magazine immediately.

I heard this “rumor” about McCain, so since we are all so much in favor of “satire”, how about a picture of the “war hero” McCain as he returns home, salutes the once beautiful wife (now crippled and not so photogenic) and sons who waited and prayed for his safe return, dumps the whole lot (haven’t seen any of that “first family” in any of his pro-mos have you)and after whoring around with loads of hotties, gets a divorce and rides off into the sunset (as in finding a rich typically pretty thin white babe 18 years his junior to marry) whose very wealthy father runs him for senator morphing into the next coming of christ (which anybody in a military uniform qualifies)to be groomed for president.
He is not well informed (Sunni, Shia)but what’s the difference for the average Amercian anyway. Not withstanding the obvious that he appears to be in a progressive stage of alzhimer’s,(after Bush nothing can be worse intellectually speaking) he will be “just the thing” to continue the economic and landslide decline in our standing in the world.
And for all of you out there that still believe America can go anywhere in the world and overthrow legitimate elected governments just because we don’t like their politics, here’s a tip-
-that’s how you lose the respect of the world
-and specifically as it relates to “Muslim” countries they all get to go to heaven even if they commit suicide – it’s real hard to win that one since most Americans aren’t willing to die (other than our brave military men)- who have to go and die whether the fight is legitimate or not and Iraq wasn’t and isn’t. Even the great America doesn’t get to deem a wrong a right simply by decree (except in their own warped world), so by rights you get to go to hell either way.
By the way when was the last time we had a code Yellow, Orange, or Red? You’all don’t remember those right before the second Bush election that scared the pants off of every red-blooded American that the terrorists were right outside your back door?
How about Osama Bin Laden? He’s the guy who was leading the charge to blow up America-remember? And you all still think Bush is the guy to keep you safe? I know you don’t remember but 911 happened during Bush’s watch because he didn’t listen to an FBI woman who sent it up the chain of command that there are some Muslim guys learning to fly planes who don’t think the need to know how to land. And McCain doesn’t think finding Bin Laden in Afghanistan is as important as protecting the oil in Iraq.
You will get what you deserve, too bad I won’t.
One last comment, whichever wins it’s a question of really difficult -Barack or worser-McCain, because Bush has taken this country so far into the toilet (and you haven’t seen the bottom yet for our America), McCain doesn’t even have a clue and as unfortunate as the reality is it will take draconian measures even if Barack gets in such that neither candidate can pull us out of this recession without a long drought of almost depression era suffering (exception- for the Bush click of the wealthy) who will continue to rig things so that they make money no matter what.
And America you get what you deserve. so maybe in some far off future you will vote for substance and the better good of all= the average working stiff instead of what you secretly wish you could be- a member of the top 1 percent rich.

The cover is definately offensive! Lighten up America, you say? Look at all the racist comments on this board and then walk a day in the shoes of an African American or Muslim these days. That cover was meant to sabotage Obama, we all know how much ignorance is in America, and that several people will see the cover and react. Wasn’t it once said “a picture paints a thousand words?” Whomever decided the cartoon should grace the cover knew what he or she was doing. That cover will have its intended affect! The cover should be taken off newsstands immediately and a public apology should be given to the Obama family. The picture is racist, and it is NOT funny. Remember, satire was used during the civil rights movement. Are we going back in time? The wounds have not yet healed, give satire a rest, or should I look forward to McCain showing up somewhere in blackface?

If that is satire, I don’t get it. If I don’t get it, then it is not satire. To me that cover is viscious and stupid.
Furthermore, I have neighbors on both sides of my home, in back and across the street who really believe that Obama is a muslim, and for that reason alone, not to be trusted. These people are literalists, having never heard of satire.
When they see that cover, terror will well up in them, and no amount of convincing will bring them to reality.

Art is about communications. The artist’s job is to use his chosen medium, whether that be the written word, a painting, a song, a symphony or even a cartoon to communicate the emotion he feels or the concepts he is thinking of and transmit them to his audience. The measure of success here is how close the received message is to the original.
The stated intent of this cartoon was satire. However, the message that I received and the emotion that I felt was one of repulsion, of utter disgust and disappointment in what was once a respected publication. For me, personally, the communications was a total failure.

I’m not saying the editors of The New Yorker don’t have the right to put whatever they want on their cover. But I think they have an obligation to readers to adhere to some kind of limits, especially if they want to be taken seriously in the future.
Do they think there is a line that shouldn’t be crossed? Despite this week’s cover, I think they do. For example, would they have a cover depicting:
Obama behind the controls of a jet about to crash into the World Trade Center, or actually killing someone?
Obama ravishing a white woman, or some other racially charged image?
I could make up serious issues that these covers would be “commenting” on, but I bet The New Yorker still wouldn’t run them. That’s because there IS a line. Yes, it’s tough to define. But I can tell you that this week The New Yorker crossed it, just to drum up some publicity. Obviously, they have succeeded.
But there is a cost — it’s well documented that even denying false rumors perpetuates them. Putting them on the cover of a mainstream publication, even to show how ludicrous they are, lends them a level a credibility they didn’t have before. As for “sparking debate” on some sort of controversial topic, I don’t think that applies here.
In addition, many people are hoping that this election could be about actual issues instead of irrelevant nonsense and character assassination. This cover is not helping.

While the New Yorker cover is provocative, it will have no effect on any persons vote. An artists perspective ought to recieve consideration before the media jumps all over it. Another example of overlooking more serious issues in our society.

This is one of the biggest offenses I’ve seen. The responses to this image only show how little accurate information is being given to the voting public.
Now, for my response to this image… This is NOT satire! It’s SLANDER. The definition of satire is, according to dictionary.reference.com, A literary work in which human vice or folly is attacked through irony, derision, or wit.
That is NOT what this is! SLANDER!

The New Yorker made overt what the rumor squad is spreading covertly. It provides the senator with the opportunity to enter into a dialogue with the media and hopefully publically with the editorial board of the New Yorker. Senator Obama needs more dialogue and less monologue so that he will be experienced as a problem solver and issue confronter and less like an orator and monologuer. The New Yorker through satire has given him an opportunity that I hope his immature campaign staff can work with strategically.

It’s not about Freedom of Speech – of course they have the RIGHT to use the offensive cover. It’s just not smart. It’s devisive and fear mongering in the worst way. I suspect there is no person of color on their editorial board. THAT’S one of the reason you need people of different perspectives when you are trying to make such an important decision. If they really wanted to make it satire, all they needed to do was put Chaney and Rove in the background as the orchestrators of the picture – THEN it would be satire. The New Yorker blew it big time with this one.

For those of you that think it’s ok – How would you feel if the New Yorker ran a picture of American GI’s killing babies in VietNam. Of course we know the soldiers WEREN’T baby killers, but many people at the time called them that. So since the majority of us know it’s not true I guess it would be ok for the New Yorker so show them killing babies, because after all, it’s satire.

The New Yorker can make no claim that they are cultured. They need to review the definition of satire. Remember the bullies that only said they were “just kidding” when they were caught bullying other kids.
Now, they’re “just kidding”. And just when we thought we were getting beyond the Rove/Bush years of campaigning. Did they think they were as clever as Rove was with the swift-boat smear campaign?
It’s time for a real journalist to refuse to take this at face value and determine who is really behind getting something this offensive published. If they thought it was funny, it wasn’t -the editor should be fired. If they knew it wasn’t funny and decided to print it for other reasons, their agenda should be exposed, and of course then they should be fired.
Step up and be journalists, and not just reporters. There is a lot more to the motivation behind this cover, than Oops!, we were just trying to be funny.
I am an offended American. I don’t need to label my race, my political party, my sex, or my age to justify that I am offended.

Great reporting. As I read it shows your viewers opinions.Though they differ it must feel great to know the freedom of the press is so strongly viewed by all.The new yorker should be nominated for a pulitzer. Why?Because good or bad it is a valid point. Why?because this man cant even respond to the truth. The best he could do is cry raceism. He has not once denied his affiliations of what the new yorker does or does not imply. If anything he should praise the new yorker on exersizeing thier rights to inform the people. You must stick together when a tyrant tries to silence the press. The founding fathers would be proud of todays press.

Ron, you are an IDIOT. Muslims come in all colors, shapes and sizes. There are black muslims, brown muslims, yellow muslims and white muslims. What back country do you come from? Obama looks like a man who is half white and half african because that’s what he is.

There was no uproar when Hillary was on the cover, why should there be one now?
I believe in the first amendment, I believe in your right to say and print any cover you want to. I may not agree with everything that is printed out there, in fact I don’t, but I do believe in our individual right to do it.
That being said, I love the cover, I wouldn’t change a thing. This is something that the American people should think about, Obama is about as unpatriotic as they come, and his wife isn’t far behind. Why do they deserve any better treatment than anyone else who has appeared on the cover? They don’t.
This might actually get people to think, to talk, to try to understand a man who has broken every political promise he has made thus far, perhaps it is time to ask why. Why is this man who is telling us how patriotic he is, how much the constitution means to him, why he would vote for retro-active protections for those who participated in warrantless wire-tapping. Why? Why do they deserve more than the American people deserve? What gives them the right to invade our privacy and get away with it? How dare you for that. Hillary kept her word and voted against it.
Obama has nothing to offer this country, he has brought racism to the forefront of this campaign, he is a racist. He has disowned just about everyone he has ever known, I don’t think he has one old friend left. At least not in front of the cameras. Obama lacks character, knowledge, experience, integrity, he does possess a self-centered attitude, self-serving ways, arrogance, racist attitudes, and clearly lacks what it takes to run our country.
We will have Hillary as our next president, she will be on the ballot. She will win the nomination, why? Because Hillary is a woman of her word, a woman of class and grace, she has a great knowledge and understanding on key issues of today. She can lead our military from day one, she has character, she is not a racist, she has worked tirelessly for 36 years on behalf of all Americans. Hillary is a true leader, and the only one who can win against McCain, the DNC knows this, the supers know it, but the question is, do they have the character it takes to admit they were wrong and give Hillary the nomination? I believe they will realize that Obama is much too dangerous to put into the White House, and the American people know it.

OMG, you really must give the average American some credit. You don’t think they know satire when they see it? How stupid do you think voters are? Do you really think a picture will change our minds about who we will and will not vote for?
It is the character of the person, the experience one has, the persons ability to take on any challenge, it is how they feel about the issues that are so important in today’s world. It is how they feel about the war, fisa, women’s rights, etc. A magazine cover will not sway the average voter as you put it. The average voter is quite well versed on the issues we face each day, and to think that you believe a picture would actually change a persons vote is ridiculous.

I first saw this cover on the Stephanopolis show Sunday Night. I took it just as it was meant to be, Satirical, and it got a snicker out of me. I Can’t believe the uproar of the Obama Crowd. They’re just looking for the Racist Card, and sympathy of the Public! Gimme a Break,Folks. I think this is the U.S.A., not some third world country like Iran, and many others where something the IN’s in politics would have the Cover Artist’s Head, or worse Imprisonment…Whichever you prefer. This is a Freedom of the Press Issue, and I don’t think our government calls for a Fatwa, against authors and artists just because they don’t like a particular article or caricature. I can’t believe the news is making a big deal of of this. Politicians have often been satiricized on the New Yorker cover. Why can’t Obama and his wife endure some criticism? New Yorker, you did a great job. Now people need to read the article. That’s what I find the best part of this publication.

I guess all is fair in love and war. The next cover I would like to see is McBush and Cindy sitting in their Ferrari, while in the background, Carol McCain, on her crutches, standing with her and John’s three children crying ‘John, John, I’m your wife. Where are you going. Please don’t forget your kids.’ Off to John’s left is his nurse and ‘locate the alzheimer’s beacon and wristband. Off to Cindy’s right is her private jet, bags packed, young, studdly guy waiting on the steps for her. Oh, and for that little satiric touch, John’s bottle of Viagra slipping from his watch pocket.

If you have to even ask that question, you must be more stupid than the NYorker! Anyone can see that it is a poor attempt at smear!! What has Michelle done to deserve this? Well, if you are blond and an heiress, you would not be made fun of that way. This “satire” is not unintended – it was on purpose to spread fear and evil, lies though they may be. It is time for the editors to own up and take responsibility for the harm they are trying to inflict on an already damaged nation, going down the tubes economically, and divided by race, class and wealth. We as citizens should stand up for higher morals and look towards building a better country. That is why we should vote for someone like Obama who would be trying to lift us up rather than McSame and the New Yorker who are just dragging us down. Shame on them!

What is the matter with being a Muslim? One of the most famous American sports heros in the world, Mohammad Ali, is a Muslim. He is revered by millions of people. So even if Barack WAS a Muslim (and he’s certainly not), so what? Hey, Mitt Romney ran and he’s a Mormon. Not much difference.

If you take the facts of Obama’s Life.
Take all his personal friends over a 20 year peroid.
Take the Fact that on more than one occasion Mr Obama as an Adult did don the mulsim clothing.
In His own book, he states he study the koran.
Take the Fact that him and his wife did do fist bumps on national TV.
Take the Fact Mr Obama has complained and Blamed everything on The Government.
Take the Fact that Obama has used the media in all shape and forms to lie to the American People on numerious Occasion.
All the Facts True, Documented, In the Media, Done or stated by Mr Obama himself.
This is the Picture Mr Obama has painted of himself as in the New Yorker.
The More Mr Obama whines and cries publically about it The worse it makes it look on Him.
Everything Mr Obama did or said, was all put into one picture.

The taboo against speaking about Obama in anything less than glowing terms has been deeply unsettling. He is a flesh and blood man, a politician after all, not a god. Axlerod and his production assistants have created a mythology about Obama that just doesn’t jibe with what people keep learning about him. The truth is somewhere IN THE MIDDLE between the extremes of their rendering and the extremes of yours. Your cover was like a breath of fresh air – not because I think Obama is anti-American, but because I know that any resemblance between him and Kennedy, Martin Luther King or Lincoln is entirely superficial.

I don’t care about this damn cartoon! I care about what has happened to the USA. People are standing in lines for hours to get their money out of banks. The Great Depression II and World War III is here. The Democrats and Republicans have destroyed the USA. I’m voting for a 3rd Party again in 2008. Obama and McCain both cannot be trusted. Bush and Clinton have destroyed the USA. We are now a 3rd World Country! I want Switzerland nuked in World War III.

Amazingly, this cartoon is showing exactly the way many people feel about the Obamas. They can’t get it out of their heads that the Senator is an Islamic sleeper who is just waiting to help our country implode. The touch in the artwork that troubled me was the American flag burning in the fireplace. This whole concept of Obama distancing himself from the American flag because it is a symbol of oppression for many people in th world is ridiculous. If you can’t love and treasure our flag…don’t try to be our president.

I can’t believe this is even an issue. Of course it’s satire. As a democrat, I won’t vote for someone so thin skinned. It reminds me of the outrage over the comic depictions of “The Prophet”. And if McCain is buying into this nonsense I wouldn’t vote for him either. Hillary Clinton has withstood more satire and comic strip depictions than Obama and McCain combined, yet doesn’t whine about it. It’s a puny issue. Our freedom of speech and expression are more important. There’s still time to get Hillary back.

Posted by: Lenny | July 15, 2008, 10:27 am 10:27 am

If he were the hypocritical covert Muslim terrorist that so many ignorant Americans believe him to be, Senator Obama could have saved himself a lot of agony by changing his name long before he entered politics. Uninformed bigots have no desire to change their unfounded opinions or misguided beliefs because they are intellectually unable to read with any comprehension. They are able, however, to look at pictures and find within them validation of their notions. The New Yorker cover handled that for them nicely. It should not be funny to any red-blooded American to even consider the idea of two terrorists in the White House. Sorry, no other political candidate has ever been made fun of in this manner.

Political candidates are made fun of all of the time. There were so many inappropriate (but funny) jokes about Bill Clinton’s infidelity, or about Hillary Clinton’s ruthless ambition. I know Obama does not worship Bin Laden, and I think the cartoon is very funny because it’s ludicrous to see Obama and Michelle dressed in this manner. It’s a cartoon and isn’t meant to be taken seriously, and I think Obama and his supporters need to realize that the primaries are over and he is not above the scrutiny that every other candidate is subjected to. Really, I think it’s time for him to develop thicker skin because this is nothing compared to what he will experience as we approach November.

did anybody bother to the read the two articles about obama before criticzing the new yorker’s obama cartoon? all of this ballyhoo is much ado about nothing.
both were even-handed and nonpartisan, and are definitely not attacking him. one was an extensive article about his political career, the other about if he really has flip-flopped on issues. while words like ‘opportunist’ and ‘carpetbagger’ were used, those were quotes from those who knew him best, and not the magazine’s opinion. he was called ‘paradoxical’, but that’s hardly an attack, it’s fact as he is a politician after all.
if it was a publicity stunt by the new yorker to sell magazines, well it worked! i hardly ever read it, but i did this time and wasn’t alone. i got the last copy at the bookstore i went to.

I find it very interesting, even a bit amusing, that this cover should strike such a reaction across the country. It is not that I do not understand why some would be upset. Even from Obama’s point of view, I would have to say that in his shoes I would feel a bit uncomfortable with this kind of press. However, one should consider the source: The New Yorker Magazine. How can anyone who knows of this periodical not see that they are simply illustrating the utter ridiculousness of what passes for news and intelligent commentary in this country? Is it ridiculous and maybe a bit offensive? Sure! But that’s the point. What is refreshing about the New Yorker’s approach is that for once someone is not just talking while others tone the message out- It’s right there in your face saying “This is what you believe? You take this kind of garbage seriously?” I think that people need to get a grip and reporters need to come up with some actual facts. A ‘terrorist fist bump’? Really? That’s all you can come up with? Obama is doing really well if people have to make up fanatical, over-dramatized delusions centered around a hand jester a picture and a name. Save the fairy tales for your kids and grow up.

I thought the New Yorker cover was sadly disgusting. The thing that made it sad was the fact that a great number of Americans, even in this Century, have a need to continue embodying racism. I was greatly amazed a majority of the white journalists who found the spoof of Senator Hillary Clinton by Father Michael Pfleger so thoroughly disgusting, but they found the intentional denigration of the Obamas “satirical”. I also noted that Father Pfleger’s spoof was played on the national media for a solid week or more and the New Yorker cover was discussed only 1 day and it disappeared. I am heartbroken that America’s most deadly disease, racism, is yet far from healing.

When I first saw the cover of the New Yorker, I found it HYSTERICALLY FUNNY! I had been keeping up with all of these insane e-mail myths that the right-wing fringe have been putting out about Mr. Obama for the past few months (“He’s a Muslim terrorist!” “That fist bump was a secret gang sign!” “He wants to destroy America!”), and it was hilarious to see them all compacted down to one simple yet ludicrous drawing – completely divorced from all reality, just like the mindsets of so many other hard-core conservative Republicans.
To then witness the stir that came about because of this cartoon depressed the hell out of me. It’s hard to believe that less than a month ago, the comedic legend George Carlin was still walking amongst us, and if he had remained alive for just a few more weeks to see this so-called furor over what is truly meant to be a joke, he would not have stood for it. He’d be going up to anyone who would listen and reminding them that THIS IS WHAT HUMOR IS/DOES/ALWAYS IS/ALWAYS WILL BE!! Now more than ever, WE NEED TO BE ABLE TO LAUGH AT ALL OF IT!! Prices are going up; violence is on the rise; people are more paranoid than ever; we can barely afford to leave home to escape our meager lives, and when we try to seek solace in the “simple” escapism of television, we find 256 channels of nothing worth watching!! Now more than ever, we need to be able to laugh about it all!
So let’s break the joke down for those of you who still don’t get it: several hundred socially-inept, intellectually-bankrupt morons who just happen to be conservative Republicans “recieved” some (mis-)information from an “unknown source” about an African-American, Democratic presidential candidate. These same people, who seemingly have recused themselves from all reliable sources of “mainstream” information, pumped these lies back out to several thousand other like-minded individuals via the one medium that they could have used just as easily to check the facts behind these myths – the internet. These same brain-addled freaks could be shown the current cover of the New Yorker and see it as some sort of vindication that they were in the right all along. They would self-rightiously declare that this is EXACTLY who the Democrats want to put in the White House!
Kids, if we don’t laugh at this whole ridiculous thing, THE MORONS WIN!!!!!

As an independent I wonder why should we even care what the media does or says as the truth? It is a cartoon. Don’t take it personally. Aren’t there more important things to the discuss in our country? Why can’t the democratic congress pass a stinking energy bill? To the republicans why the hell can’t you release some oil from the strategic oil reserve to break the oil psychology? Because both sides are thinking about an election instead of doing the job we entrusted to you.
Has anyone figured out the more government we have involved in our lives the more screwed up things become? Every political race is about the lesser of the two evils. Maybe, next week there will be a cover mocking Mr. McCain’s relationship with Mr. Bush something the democrats love to do. I am glad to see one of the media groups steping away from the pack for once. As you can tell they are taking a beating for it as usual. Everybody vote in November and I will decide who wins.

If New Yorker is serious and impartial about its Obama and Michelle “cartoon” they will have a cartoon on the next cover showing Gramm and McCain with a sample of whining Americans such as GM ex-employees, bankrupt finacial organizations, ex-homeowners outside of homes they have lost and motorists paying $50 for 12 gallons of gasoline. Such whining clearly is ludicrous. Ha, ha, ha. I dare New Yorker.

Unfortunately the New Yorker went over the top on this one! Over the heads of most people. And since most people in the US don’t admit to being intellectual, it missed the point.
In any case even as satire, irony or sarcasm, it was in bad taste and only fuels the fire of ignorance and prejudice.
Sadly, the important issues are being ignored and only the emotional issues of race, religion and fear have become a detail of this campaign.

I have great respect for the role of satire in public discourse. Some may go so far as to say it is an American tradition.
Satire plays an important role in any democracy by allowing the free-flow of ideas into narrow places they may never otherwise reach. Through the use of humor, satire exposes our common cognitive dissonance and permits controversial or radical ideas to penetrate the thick skin of our preconceived notions in ways that the communication of mere fact cannot.
However, sensationalizing the worst fears of those who subscribe to only one particular mind-set or world view is not satire, but exploitation.
As an Obama supporter who is highly suspicious of John McCain, I, too, have my own ‘worst fears’ and negative stereotypes.
If the New Yorker’s editorial board is to claim that this cartoon is mere satire, then I expect to have my own narrow-minded ignorance revealed to me, as well. Am I any less deserving of having my hypocrisies exposed than its more right-of-center readers?
Where is the cartoon of an Oxycontin-swilling, Klansmen hood-wearing, peroxide blonde first cousin-marrying, shallow gene pool-wading octogenarian John McCain standing atop a tank about to plow through a Baghdad kindergarten?
Without such parity in the images the New Yorker editorial staff chooses to present, I will never again purchase an issue of that magazine.
