Alberto Gonzales & The Hiring Scandal
The Justice Department officials who used politics to decide who to hire…are not going to be prosecuted. Attorney General Michael Mukasey broke the news today. This was one of the controversies that eventually led to the resignation of Alberto Gonzales. From ABC’s Pierre Thomas: Attorney General Michael Mukasey today came as close as he ever has in criticizing his predecessor, Alberto Gonzales. Mukasey is clearly not happy that two recent internal investigations have shown that politics played a roll in hiring career lawyers and personnel in department programs that were supposed to be based solely on merit. Mukasey, a man who doesn’t seek the limelight, had this to say about the senior management which allowed these problems to fester:
"There was a failure of supervision by senior officials in the Department" Mukasey said. "There is no denying it: the system failed. The active wrong-doing detailed in the two joint reports was not systemic in that only a few people were directly implicated in it. But the failure was systemic in that the system – the institution – failed to check the behavior of those who did wrong." Mukasey knows that at the Justice Department politics is no substitute for integrity.

Mukasey: Prosecuting criminal violations would be so backward looking.
Here at the Department of “Justice” we believe in deterring criminal activities in pursuit of a political agenda by giving the Republican perpetrators a big hug, so they will feel better about themselves.

Nothing surprises me with the Bush administration! What scares me are the things we don’t know about yet, they surely will not be in favor of the working person/taxpayer!

There’s no sense in prosecuting anyone involved in wrong-doing in this administration until President Bush is no longer in a position to commute sentences.

I hope no one was surprised by this. This administration has never held anyone accountable for wrondoing because all the wrongdoing was in support of the administration’s policies. The biggest liars and cheats I’ve ever know were self-avowed Christians, so we should NEVER assume that just because someone is a Christian that they have any integrity. Of course, Bush’s behavior makes the honest Christians I know very upset.
I think what this country needs, for a change, is a secular humanist president, or at least someone with no ties to organized religion. I also think that we should stop swearing people into public office by having them place one hand on a Bible while doing so. Instead, they should place one hand on a copy of the Constitution. After all, that’s what they are swearing to uphold. I think Bush got it backwards – that he was swearing to uphold the Bible, not the Constitution. Too bad he’s not done either.=
