Charlie Gibson’s Blogging

Okay, so the overwhelming sentiment seems (55 responses yesterday) that it is a worthy use of time to blog.  So we’ll continue this experiment. Someone suggested yesterday that I read the responses — I am doing that for now.  Whether I’ll be able to read them all when (or if) they increase in number remains to be seen.  But I’m going to try to read at least some.  A "representative sample" as the polling people like to say. One of the responses truly delighted me yesterday.  "Hugs from Switzerland," wrote "Glenn."  Glenn is my niece — my brother’s youngest child who has been living in Switzerland for many years. To politics — I thought we probably talked too much and too long last night at the top of the hour-long convention coverage.  Hillary Clinton’s speech was the featured attraction of the night — the program involving her introductory film and Chelsea’s introduction and the speech itself was supposed to begin ten or fifteen minutes before it actually got under-way.  So we were "filling" for longer than planned.  We excerpted (in other words pulled brief soundbites) from five of the earlier speakers.  But I’m second guessing myself. As something of a student of convention speeches, I thought Senator Clinton did exactly what she set out to do.  She talked directly to her followers, saluted them for what they did for her, emphasized the issues on which she had centered her campaign, and was unqualified in her endorsement of Barack Obama.  I posed the question to George during "World News" whether it was fair that so many people would watch the speech and ask themselves "Does she really mean it?"  George, I think rightly, pointed out that you have to be cynical in the extreme to believe that she doesn’t want to get Obama elected.  The differences between the two of them programmatically are small.  The differences between Senators Clinton and McCain on policy issues are great.  To say that her endorsement of Obama isn’t sincere, is to question her commitment to her issues.  And that, George pointed out, is not really fair to her. Now is there still a coolness between the two camps?  To be sure.  Is there some anger in the Clinton camp that she wasn’t really considered as a number two?  Same answer.  But the endorsement is genuine.  And the speech I thought was really very well crafted and delivered.  The roll call of the states and the actual nomination of Barack Obama comes this afternoon. The thinking is, they plan to go through the call of the states for a time — and then some state (probably one of some significance to Barack Obama) will yield to another state.  At that point someone  — and you can get your bets down now on who that is — will move to make the choice unanimous.  That should come during the East Coast feed of the "World News" broadcast.  We’ll carry it live in that version of the program and package it for the other time zones. Then tonight, Joe Biden’s speech.  He is always an entertaining figure.  Earlier in the night Bill Clinton speaks.  Will the latter upstage the former?  I honestly don’t think so.  Mrs. Clinton sort of tamped the flames of the Clinton-Obama controversy, so I think Senator Biden will have his night.  But as always, it will be fun to watch.

Charlie – I can’t believe that the abcnews website has not one word on the arrest of the abc film guys working on your news stories by the Denver PD. I am sure by tonight it will be a story mentioned everywhere else. Maybe you should just tell viewers to read Matt Drudge and put on an extra football game each week.

I guess I’m a politics junkie, but I’ve been watching PBS to see the earlier speeches in their entirety. This is the most significant election of my lifetime (I’m 49) and I’m frustrated by negative ads and repeated sound bites. We’ve become used to being spoon-fed, but I want the whole meal! I’m so glad I got to see Obama’s sister and Jesse Jackson, Jr, among others.

Charlie. It is a pleasure to watch you and the ABC team cover the convention. Keep up the good work!
I’m in agreement that Hillary performed exceedingly well last night. I’m looking forward to your coverage of Joe Biden and Bill Clinton!

Hello Mr. Gibson,
I was just curious as to how you think the Obama administration, if elected, will use Hilary Clinton, if at all. Will you focus on asking her how she wants to function in the administration , if at all? One last question, would you comment on the energy panel they had at the convention yesterday. Will you as reporters follow-up on the comments the panel members made yesterday? In other words, the panel talked about commitments to energy change but how will they make that happen? What legislation has to change in order to open the doors for alternative energy. The panel members didn’t see to address that.
P.S. Your personal touch in your reporting style and the topics you cover on your broadcasts makes me listen carefully. I hope you realize what a difference you make in our lives with your content and style. God Bless.

Charlie,
I’ve been a huge fan since I was a kid watching GMA. Welcome to the blogging world. As for Senator Clinton’s speech I have to admit that she did an outstanding job and her message was very clear. However did anyone else think her introduction video was a little odd? For a minute I thought that maybe she really was the nominee instead of Obama. This video seemed like it was setting the stage for her next run in 4 or 8 years maybe? I wonder if Obama’s people were thrilled about it. Haha…

Posted by: Ryan | August 27, 2008, 5:39 pm 5:39 pm

Charlie,
As you may know, a lot of people are upset with all of the networks for talking over the speeches, just so you can TELL us what it all means, rather than showing us the actual “news.”
“Analysis” is all very fine in its place, but just because you are on the air, doesn’t mean you have to be talking. I was very annoyed to miss most of Gov. Schweitzer’s speech, even though he was standing right there on the monitor, exciting the crowd like no one else has done, while pundits were chatting to “kill time.”

Hi Charlie Gibson,
I have enjoyed reading your blog. I have watched GMA for many, many years and I trust what you have to say in all news coverage and stories.
Diane, George and yourself are very interesting to listen to and I love the way you interact with each other.

How long is Bill Clinton going to throw his toys out of his pram is it not time he grew up and pretended to be a democrate

Posted by: angel | August 27, 2008, 6:13 pm 6:13 pm

Why are Obama’s poll numbers going down in the midst of the Democratic convention? I believe Michelle Obama’s convention speech was well received. However the public is wary of a candidate who claims he plans to transform the world into a world as “it should be”.
Obama’s message of changing the world into the world as it “should be” sounds pretty arrogant when you compare it to Obama’s “… above my pay grade..” response about human rights for an unborn baby and reveals the disconnect Obama has with the reality of life.

Posted by: may | August 27, 2008, 6:14 pm 6:14 pm

Why do you think that with all the support that Hillary Clinton had, that Obama did not choose her as his running mate. I feel that if he would have done that, he would not have to be so concerned about all her supporters going to McCain!!! What is your opinion on this?

Posted by: Connie | August 27, 2008, 6:15 pm 6:15 pm

I second Jan’s comment above. Diane, George, and you have all been really sharp and interesting throughout the convention. I agree the instinct to run as much actual live footage as possible is the right one, but the talk – when it’s come – has been insightful, whereas a lot of the filler on the other networks has been so much bloviating.
On a side note, I’m curious as to whether or not the “PUMAs” have any bargaining power, and if so, what they might use it for. Seems that while everyone is trying so hard to bring them back into the fold, they might be able to use their leverage to influence the Obama campaign on policy or something along those lines. Of course, that might be dangerous for everyone, and do nothing but turn a “divided convention” into a “brokered convention.”
As it is, though, I’ve heard little about any agenda the PUMAs might have beyond simply taking revenge on the Obama campaign and the DNC for perceived slights on Hillary during the primaries. I don’t know whether to attribute that to the PUMAs or simply to the coverage of them. In either case, Hillary did an amazing job last night.

Just curious, why hasn’t there been any coverage about Obama’s law suit. Supossedly he was born in Kenya, not Hawaii like he says. He is not a US citizen.

Posted by: carol roche | August 27, 2008, 6:43 pm 6:43 pm

I AM SICK AND TIRED OF HEARING ABOUT THE NEEDY/DISGRUNTLED HILLARY SUPPORTERS. THE WOMAN THEY INTERVIEWED (LAST NIGHT/TUESDAY) AFTER HILLARY SPOKE WAS PATHETIC; “I USED TO BE THE ONE WHO DROVE MY FAMILY TO VOTE, NOW THEY WILL PROBALLY BE THE ONES TO TAKE ME TO THE POLLS. HE WILL HAVE TO PROVE TO ME HE HAS THE EXPERIENCE TO BE PRESIDENT!” GIVE ME A BREAK! HOW COULD SHE EVEN CALL HERSELF A DEMOCRAT. I WAS VERY IMPRESSED WITH HILLARY’S SPEAK, SHE STOLE THE SHOW-AS WAS EXPECTED.HILLARY CLINTON WOULD NEVER SPEAK ON TV ABOUT NOT VOTING BECAUSE SHE LOST THE NOMINATION.

@ Rusty4011: Look, I’m not one of the partisan commenters on this blog. I don’t care who you vote for. But please be careful not to spread misinformation.
Obama was born in the U.S. He’s presented his birth certificate multiple times. It’s been examined by reporters from Newsweek.
The folks conducting the lawsuit are trying to smear him with swiftboat politics.

May, I agree with you, Michelle and Barrack seem to think pretty highly or their ability to transform the world into what it “should” be. Two questions come to mind. #1 What kind of experience at the executive level makes Obama qualified to be the Chief Executive of the most powerful Nation in the world? From what I have seen of Obama’s executive experience as documented at the Dem convention, none. #2 Most people are not sure they want a President intent on transforming the “world” much less the US into a world as it “should be”.

Posted by: Gloria | August 27, 2008, 6:56 pm 6:56 pm

Charlie,
I have always liked and admired your coverage of the news, however I have been disappointed in the negative tenor of the convention coverage. It’s not just ABC news, but it seems that the media is obsessed with the controversy with the Clintons rather than the convention as a whole. I know it must be frustrating only having only little more than 1 hour per night to cover everything, but it might be better to show more of the speeches and less commentary over political infighting that has little to do with the issues. At the very least I hope you all are at least as harsh during the Republican convention.

Posted by: Maureen Sweeney | August 27, 2008, 6:59 pm 6:59 pm

@ Carol Roche: I don’t understand. One of the reasons Hillary had such a tough time was that people put her up against a double standard, insisting that she be tough, but then criticizing her for not being “feminine enough.”
So if that frustrates you – and I’m assuming it does, given your implied support for Hillary – why make the same sort of argument against Obama, saying he’s not Afro-American enough? He’s certainly had to deal with the stereotypes that come with his skin color, just as Hillary had dealt with the prejudices that came with her gender. If a double standard is ugly in one case, why is it any less disgusting in the other?

Posted by: Josh Braun | August 27, 2008, 7:01 pm 7:01 pm

I guess every can make there own puppet on a sting or call it there own transformation they created that person called Obama, go pull his strings now.

Posted by: GG | August 27, 2008, 7:02 pm 7:02 pm

The convention has been dissapointing to date, with the exception of Hilary’s speech. And yes, it does seem as though she is campaigning to obtain a position in the Obama administration – if that ever comes to pass. However, I have to disagree with George S. and state that I do question Hilary’s sincerity regarding her support for Obama. I believe that she is “going along” with the program of the Dems in order not to raise any more eyebrows. A deal has been struck, so to speak, and she is reading her script and saying her lines. I do believe that she is faithful to her Democratic ideals, just not to Obama. In addition, let’s face it – she has made more news and become more of a focus in this convention than Obama himself! Think about it – why will she be in Toledo for Obama’s speech? Because it’s too tough being there tonight, and seeing someone else take the place she once lobbied the American people for. Obama has a lot of ground to gain if he wants to win the election in November so he better start working fast. People won’t forget Hilary anytime soon, and he has to overcome that.

Charlie,
Normally I am one of you biggest fans. I TiVo your broadcast everyday so that if I get home late I can still watch. Tonight however, was not your best showing. If I wanted to watch the roll call I would watch CNN, Fox, or PBS. If you wanted to listen to each state vote, and speak of the greatness of their particular state a special report would have been prudent. Instead ABC decided to focus strictly on the convention during the World News broadcast. Another option is to allocate more than an hour for the convention later in the evening.
I hope that tomorrow, even though later the same night the first black Presidential nominee will speak, ABC’s World News actually focuses on the World (or even national) news.

Charlie:
We have loved you on air for many of the years of your career. Although we love you we are not so sure about ABC news. Did they or you report the comment from Lou Dobbs commenting about his new colleagues are in tank in favor of Obama? Or how about the on air comment from Mr. Brokaw at NBC about the most recent poll showed Obama 6 point ahead of Mr. McCain when in fact the most recent polls show McCain ahead as you know. We the loyal viewers love your newscast but tell us all the stories, especially when a competitor or two get it right and wrong so to speak.
Tell us the truth and let us decide rather than favoring Mr. Obama. remember contrary to popular media spin, many of us do not think George W. Bush has been a lousy President. It takes courage to stand up against the media and constant harranging by the other party. I’d say he’s done OK having those factions clearly and totally against anything he does.
Maybe it’s Bush’s fault that Hillary did not make it?
Best regards,
DH

Charlie….so glad you are continuing the blog. I have looked forward to the post all day. I too have read all of the responses each day….very interesting.
I think the response that caught my attention the most has been the one where someone has decided not to vote because their personal choice was not selected for VP. I’m honestly not trying to be judgmental, but an attitude like this is disturbing to me. My favorite candidate isn’t even on either ticket, but I’m still proud enough of my vote to use it on election day.
Our nation is so great and even when we do not agree with this decision or that decision made by our government, we still owe our nation, our children, and our fellow Americans our vote.
I’m not only proud but blessed to live in a country where we are given this right. My ancestors, including my father, sacrificed and fought too hard for this nation for me to throw that part of my rights away.
Looking forward to tomorrow’s article….

I love watching Charlie Gibson and usually ABC is worth watching until tonight when the Democrats were portrayed in a negative way because of the so called Nancy Palosi party for 100.000 dollar supporters. I hope ABC does the same when the Republican party dishes out rewards for McCain supporters. Maybe the new name for John McCain should be McBlame. Like the successfull Grey’s Anatomy show. McDreamy and McSteamy, add the newcomer John McBlame. ec

I love that you are blogging. As for whether you all spent too much time on the commentary last night– I don’t think so. I’m a hard core Republican, but have really appreciated the speeches and commentary of this year’s DNC. Of course, that might just be because the drama has been better than most of what is scripted on HBO! I am really hoping that you, Diane, and George spend some time discussing President Clinton’s speech this evening. Barack owes him big time. i am so glad to hear that you are blogging now! but, infornately, i wont be watching the abc news coverage of it. i am so tired of the media spin on everything and wish that they would just, to put it simply, stick to the issues…
hopefully, once this election cycle is over and the world is turned around in the right and forward direction again, instead of with this bitter drama and bickering, i’ll go back to the mainstream media… i must not blame you or abc for this but rather the “objective” news stations that seem to seek drama in every crack and hole. but i so glad that i will finally get to read something again that is not biased and just gives an honest and truthful opinion. thanks, charlie :)

I was speechless when you showed an ABC reporter being manhandled and arrested on a public sidewalk in
Denver without any comment. Where is the outrage that an American citzen – a member of the press – was arreseted for doing his duty? What has happened to that young man? And to the police officers who manhandled him? I fear for freedom in this country when we fail to defend our right to know the truth. And I’m a Democrat!

Posted by: Donna Poppenhagen | August 27, 2008, 10:07 pm 10:07 pm

Charlie,
Many thanks and much appreciation to George, Diane, yourself and the rest of the ABC crew for the truly UNBIASED coverage on this year’s DNC. As we’re a little more than halfway through, I’d like to share a couple of thoughts/questions:
-How can it be possible that most networks (ABC and PBS notwithstanding) feel it acceptable to put reporters ‘in the field’ during the speeches? Esp. when the non-cable networks only give an hour or so daily? Biggest peeve for me during the week.
-I was extremely worried about the Clintons vs. Obama until President Clinton’s speech tonight. He quelled that immediately. ‘Nough said.
-RE: Clinton upstaging Biden? I admittedly don’t know enough about Sen. Biden, but he’s got to bring his A game to beat Pres. Clinton. Every single keynote speaker thus far has surpassed the one before, so let’s hope…
-John Kerry: where did this dynamic speaker come from?
Keep up the great work at ‘World News’ and please keep blogging. Let’s go Dems and let’s get the right choice in the White House.

I am disappointed and disgusted time and again that media gets away from what is really important (terrorism, unemployment, non-insured folks, high taxes, high gas prices, low wages, outsourcing, illegal immigrant and a while host of ther issues) to debate “is she or isn’t she sincere?” No wonder I am still on the fence at this stage. Charlie I hope you focus on the issues and not the “pretty” or “ugly” parts. Please, PLEASE!

for the first time this convention, i tuned into the abc coverage of the DNC and i applaud your efforts for your lack of spin, commentary, etc. unlike the coverages of other broadcast and cable news networks. in fact, the only problem that i had with your coverage was the fact that clinton’s speech was not live and the Biden video started shortly after the live coverage on cspan began. it almost makes me wish your coverage was more than the hour that it, but nonetheless, thanks for keeping it honest.

Posted by: elle | August 27, 2008, 11:10 pm 11:10 pm

Charlie – Thank you for your coverage. I just hope the GOP is covered as well. Pres. Bill Clinton may be wrong, it may be 18 million – 1. With the country in the mess, you just can not make me believe Sen. McCain will run this country – more of the same. Any age person who can do the math 1-1=-1 knows this country can not continue on Pres. Bush’s track. Eventually the train will come off the track if misaligned.

Posted by: Pati | August 27, 2008, 11:12 pm 11:12 pm

I watched it and Biden’s speech was a snoozefest. The crowd woke up at the end because they knew (or hoped) it was ending. Bill did the job he and Hillary were paid for. Bill just got one thing wrong. Obama has not picked up 18 million votes this evening. Myself and my entire family will never vote for him. And before the Obamabots get started in on this blog. I’m not racist, bitter, stupid, or anything else you come up with on a regular basis. And I really don’t care if you think I am. Oh, and don’t forget bitter. I think that’s one of the words your campaign uses to describe anyone not for Obama. By the way, who is the opening act for your pop star’s Vegas floor show tomorrow?

Posted by: Melanie | August 27, 2008, 11:20 pm 11:20 pm

Mr. Gibson – I grew up with you…well, I grew up watching you. First on GMA and now on World News. You’ve been a television mainstay within my family and NOW, to find you’re blogging is wonderful.
After hearing/watching, Hillary’s speech, Bill’s speech and then Joe Biden’s speech – I have to say I was impressed. They were all nothing less than spectacular and most particularly, Hillary, I believe gave the most moving speech of her career. Her passion for the people is resounding.
Bill’s speech did what her’s was said to not do, he endorsed Obama’s ability to serve. And, this I feel was the icing on the cake for the Obama team. The Clintons served Obama up on the veritable silver platter with grace and passion.
Joe Biden – I knew nothing about him other than his position in congress. He will do well for Obama. By the close of his speech, I personally decided to be a person to bring continued unity to the party. Up till tonight, well, I just wasn’t there, like many I’m sure.
None of the speechs can truly be compared – although, they all carry the message that we must put a democrat in the White House. All 3 of them were there for different purposes.
Tomorrow will be different. I do hope that tonight’s acknowledgement of Hillary and the people who voted for her won’t be where he stops. He still needs to woo us… It’s still awhile till November and the momentum needs to continue.
Thank you for blogging, Mr. Gibson.

It features entertainment by a great Utah boy who writes and sings cowboy music. He really should get a spot on GMA. Keep up the good work and please come join us.

Charlie:
Always love you?
Will ABC give equally positive coverage to the Republicans and McCain?
Will anyone actually look at what deregulations by Clinton Admin. did to the financial impacts of our economy and for Bush to inherit along with 9/11?
Will anyone look at what cutting our national security by Clinton, did to Bush?
It seems macro and micro econ is forgotten, or don’t we realize it takes 5 to 10 years for the economy to catch up from a potential falso bubble created before Bush?
Too many false and inaccurate claims were layed yesterday, and too much grandstanding?
It is a shame, that Clinton had to bow down, when she was dupped out of her seat anyway!!!

Would someone please ell me why the press refers to OBAMA as an African-American?
He just says what everyone wants to hear and says nothing. The reality of the responsibility is probably setting in now.

keith1212,
You said you a “Democrat for McCain”….in my opinion you are not a Democrat at all. McCain will not do a thing to promote a Democratic agenda if elected. People like you who call yourselfs Democrats are Democrats like Joe Lieberman is a Democrat. You are an Independent and really have no interest in a Democratic agenda. I am Independent because I do not believe in either party…Stop calling yourself a Democrat. You cannot be a Democrat and vote the other party’s candidate.
