Charlie’s Up & Blogging

Charlie Gibson from Denver: And so it begins. The conventions…and my participation in this blog.  I hope the former will be edifying and infectious, getting more and more people involved in this Presidential election. I hope the latter will not be embarrassing. This is my eighteenth convention, the Republicans next week will be nineteen — best I can count.  Someone asked me today what I expected to "take away" from this year’s conventions. There’s really no way to tell. Sometimes there are memorable moments that you suspect will affect the fall election — sometimes not.  I remember watching incumbent Jimmy Carter standing on the stage in New York nervously awaiting the arrival of Senator Edward Kennedy.  Carter had defeated him in the primaries.  Carter was the incumbent President.  But there he was — obviously nervous about Kennedy’s arrival.  And Kennedy wasn’t helping — he was dawdling along making Carter wait standing on the podium in front of a national television audience while the Kennedy motorcade was shown in a small box at the bottom of the screen.  I thought to myself, "Carter’s going to lose this election. He’s not acting like an incumbent." (Watch Carter’s acceptance speech).
Then there was Kansas City in 1976 when Jerry Ford was going to be nominated after a battle over the Mississippi delegation ended in his favor.  Yet the convention seemed more enamored of Ronald Reagan than of Ford.  It was almost as if the nomination were being given to the incumbent President grudgingly.  And I thought to myself, "Jimmy Carter may well unseat President Ford.  So many in this party wishes it were Reagan being nominated here…" Both of those were memorable.  Might there be a parallel at this convention?  I don’t know. Will the Clinton people come out of here still wishing she were the nominee?  Will they sit on their hands this fall hoping she’ll be the nominee in four years?  Will people believe her statements of unity? Intriguing. Incidentally, Senator Edward Kennedy will play prominently in the convention activities tonight. Monday is designed to be Michelle Obama night.  Her speech is the centerpiece — her brother will introduce her.  She will speak about the man to whom she is married.  Earlier — out of the ten o’clock eastern hour that we will broadcast, will be a tribute to Senator Edward Kennedy.  A tribute film has been prepared by Ken Burns, the documentary filmmaker, and Kennedy, whom it was presumed would be too ill to travel, taped a few remarks that are included in the film.  But Kennedy has come to Denver.  His people are being coy about it, but you can bet your bottom dollar if he’s here, he’ll come to the convention.  And while they’re saying he probably won’t talk, I can’t help but doubt that.  If he’s come all this way, he’ll speak.  And the convention’s response to him will, I suspect, overshadow everything else that happens tonight.  For this may well be the last time a Kennedy is to be recognized and honored and to speak at a Democratic convention.  That is no small moment.  That will be dramatic in the extreme. And to be "taken away" from this convention is that it is truly historic.  That word gets thrown around a lot — far too loosely.  But this convention on Wednesday will nominate an African-American candidate.  Less than 150 years since the end of slavery.  Just over fifty years after the desegregation of American schools.  Whether you support the Democrat or Republican — you cannot help but be moved at how far the country has come. I think all of us will take that away from this convention for sure.

Welcome to blogging, Charlie.
I have enjoyed your commentary and reporting over the years.(I have been voting National elections since Johnson and Goldwater.)

I think it is so wonderful that Senator Kennedy was able to come to the convention. He has not always benn my favorite politician or even my favorite Kennedy but I have to respect the man and the longevity of his career. Thru all its ups and downs Kennedy has been a consistant voice for the weak, poor and ofetn overlooked citizens.

I have to say that since the Democratic party selected (didn’t elect) Obama, they have made a huge mistake. Not only is Obama grossly under-qualified but no one knows who he is or where he really stands on the issues. Lobbyists are funding the Democratic convention yet Obama and the DNC promised not to take money from anymore lobbyists. Also, Obama was so arrogant to run for president after just 1 year in the senate.
This Democrat will be voting for McCain ’08

You are a true journalist, Mr. Gibson.
I will always admire you for your refusal to disseminate Bush/Cheney propaganda to enable the invasion of Iraq–especially your tough skepticism of Colin Powell’s WMD claims at the UN.
Your reputation is well-deserved.

Welcome Charlie – It is interesting that many, including myself, voted for Hillary because I believe in my heart that she would have been the “best” person to be President. I reject Mr. Obama for too many reasons to list besides being arrogant and inexperienced. So the Democrats say I must vote for a man that I do not respect and feel deeply will divide the country if elected, in addition to destroying our economy. If the superdelegates had not supported Barack Obama the story today would have been different…so only a few are trying to run the country, not the many.
Obama stated publicly that the men and woman that have died in the Iraq war have “wasted their lives”. In other words, family and friends of mine fighting so that “freedom” where ever it might be is not a scared cause. How can I vote for such a person? I know Obama said it was just a poor choice of words. Then he calls many people bitter and clinging to their bibles, I know another bad choice of words. The words just keep flowing from his mouth and the “media” keeps overlooking most of them–he seems to be the “chosen” one. He even refused to wear the Flag Pin which is now on every suit jacket because of the uproar…and you know the ONLY reason he is wearing the pin is that his campaign manager told him to put it on if he wants to be President. Mr. Obama says he loves America but then goes on the Europe Tour and tells the world he is sorry for America’s short-comings! A boy wearing a man’s suit using a teleprompter giving speeches will not save the United States. These are dangerous times and we need the “best”, experienced people possible. So the choice is removed by the Democrats, so I will now cast my vote for John McCain!

Thanks for writing here. News blogging is a wonderful thing. When you get steeped in information about a topic, and feel shallow boiling it all down to a few seconds or a couple hundred words for broadcast, this can be a wonderful release – a nice way to share your insight and perspective with those of us whose interest in a story extends beyond three minutes.
I’m sure there are folks who’ll give you an earful from time to time, but as you can see above, there are lots of appreciative folks as well.

Qualifications! Heart, Soul and the Dignity to rise above the leftiest, the rights and those who think they control life…History will find through a spiritual transition something far greater than men of past and present to lift this Nation to the forefront of God! No man will be able to secure less than what GOD makes happen! Blessings Mr. Gibson…The Democrats must rise up to secure the faith in God and the future of this here country…We are not rich in liberty, we lost that when we allowed power and greed…Now it is time for the world to feel the newness and the least to become the first…Apachecheynne

Hi Charlie, I always watch your newscast and was pleased to see your new blog site thanks to the TV Newser site.
It will be interesting to see how the Clintons and their supporters fit into this convention.
The cable channels have lots of filler, so I will look forward to your 10 PM reports that are filled with substance (if there is any substance to be found at a convention).
Have fun!

I’ve never cared much for Sen. Kennedy, but I still think it is nice that the Democratic party will honor him tonight at the convention. It will be a special and touching moment for many people watching.

After Brian Ross’s piece, the old adage “politics is the last refuge of scoundrels” seems even more apt. “Change?” NO se puede.

I just saw your report on lobbyists gone wild.At the dem.convention.I hope you’ll report on the same if not more out of control behavior at the republican convention.I’ve noticed that all three major networks have been slanted in favor of the conservative right.I guess Rupert Murdock owns A.B.C. as well.No wonder I prefer to watch P.B.S.It’s the only independent news left.As Mark Twain said,”the people get the gov’t they deserve.”

Welcome, Charlie. I’ve been an avid fan for years – beginning when you started on GMA. I can tell I’m going to enjoy your blog – I’ve always trusted you to be (or at least appear to be) fair and unbiased in your reporting. Of course you have your own opinions, but I’ve never known your political affiliation and that’s a good thing. This is going to be an exciting election as well as a history-making one. I’m Republican, my husband Democrat. Makes for lively (and heated) dinner table discussion. Your broadcasts will hopefully help us sort everything out. Looking forward to these blogs.

Hi Charlie,
I have been living in the USA for the past 24 years and the minute I saw you on GMA was smitten. You seem to be a very humble person but at the same time someone with a great sense of humor. I love watching you on the evening news. Can you please answer this question for me is. There are two reporters who appear on the news with you, they both have the last name Starks. Are they related. I will continue to watch each evening. Thanks Charlie

Hello Charlie! So nice to read your blog. I will not watch any station other than ABC for these conventions as I know I can count on you, George and Diane for honest, unbiased reporting. I just don’t feel that comfortable with anyone else. Thank you for being the gentleman we all know you to be. I am so looking forward to both conventions as I am a political junkie at heart, but I, also, look forward to hearing commentary from Diane, George and yourself. Keep up the good work.

Dear Mr. Gibson:
Thank you for your thoughtful and down-to-earth coverage. I am a loyal viewer and find your wit and warmth to be a breath of fresh air on the networks.
And, by the way, most every evening, when you close your broadcast with “I hope you had a good day” I find it very comforting.Thank you for that.
It so reminds me of father who passed away 10 years ago.
I’ve been wanting to tell you that for a long time.
Enjoy the convention – I look forward to your insight!

Charlie – In these very uncertain times of talk radio, cable news, and bloggers it is nice to have a ‘news man’ join the discussion on line. I look forward to your convention insights and impressions.
Thanks to all at ABC News.

Charlie, Thank you for presenting as impartial a presentation as possible on tv. Many of us appreciate that. Also, Many Many thanks for ending your broadcasts on a positive note. There is so many negatives in all aspects of the new. It is important for us all to remember that we do live in a wonderful country and that it is not only evil that should be broadcast. Good things are what makes this country great.

Charlie, Everyday, when my husband gets home from work – he takes my daughter out to play and I get to sit and watch WN with no interruptions. Its my moment of peace during the day – I enjoy it very much and have always enjoyed your broadcasts – Peter Jennings had big shoes to fill – you have done a wonderful job. Not sure why you would start the blogging though – I know its the latest thing – but wow – talk about a forum for crazies! (myself included sometimes) Although I am addicted it does sadly remind me so often how horrible people can be. Strange thing the technology age. Good Luck & Keep up the good work!

hi charlie in watching your interview with that big oil executive the one question you didn’t ask was when are they going to uncap those thousands of wells they capped off about 30 years ago. the reason i know this is a fellow plumber at a union meeting told me he had spent the last 3 years at that time capping off oil wells, the reason the oil companies want to wait until gasoline hits $5 a gallon then all of a sudden they will have all kinds of oil. thought you’d like to know ken

Bobby,
Why would you want to vote for John McCain when you wanted Hillary Clinton. McCain is opposed to just about everything Hillary supports. Obama and Clinton are 90% in agreement. What good is a strong leader when he supports the wrong issues. Please take another look at Barack Obama…. for the sake of our country. Yes, Obama has not been around as long as John McCain, but at the age of 47, Obama certainly has more staying power. He’s shown enough leadership skills to convince me he’s up to the task. I’m voting for Barack Obama. Mary

Thank you Charlie for bringing up the corporate lobby parties – I know this happens in the Republican convention also but they don’t condemn it like Obama has. He can’t run away from this flip-flop. Another reason he won’t win and after tonight will be another reason – Michele (a real disaster). I like your newscast.

Charlie, Your report on “DNC MONEY TRAIL” confirms that we will not be seeing any significant changes even if Obama is elected as President of this great nation. It was a great report that you have presented and it confirms my prediction that Obama will not have the effective power to make whatever changes he has been preaching to us all these months. Washington D.C. will always conduct business as how they see fit and it will take a massive movement to be able make make any significant change. This is very sad.

On the money trail – as long as money remains the mothers milk of politics nothing will change, If ABC has any integrity they will certainly do the same type of story from the Republican convention! I bet we will see more corporate chieftans, more private jets and more money greasing the palms of politics!

When is a man 45 not old enough. the average person may only live to 75 and have their full faculties alng with agiity and endurance. Mr. Obama is a man not a boy as one blogger emplied. If a person who says they are a democrat and stand for democratic values such the war , the economy, the housing market the stagering dept. and they fell that McCain is going to walk a differnt path than a republican the they should not have nothing to complain about just vote republican and stop explaining that you just can’t vote democratic because you didn’t get the flavour popcycle you wanted. These people are selfish and are resistant tot here old ideas and up bringing and need to do some soul searching. Can you see a man as a man or will you still judge him by the color of his skin.

I think Barak will live to regret not picking Hilary for the VP. I think his ego is amazing and the people who advise him are fools. They are the ones who need to unify the party not Hilary. She could personally call me today and ask me to vote for him and I would not. Women have had the vote for 88yrs, real progress will be when we see one in the Oval Office.

Good job, Charlie, and you truly ARE filling dear Peter’s shoes quite well! I have my TiVo set to pick up World News daily (as well as BBC, and sometimes other broadcasts.)
I’m disappointed to see a few of the comments by people above so off-topic and partisan, apparently made by Republicans masquerading as Hillary supporters for McCain, but, alas, that is the nature of blogging. I suppose if comments get way off the subject in future posts you’ll have to decide on a deletion policy for off-topic posts. In response to them let me refer to the insightful Jack Cafferty analysis of August 19th titled Is McCain another George W. Bush? Very interesting expose of the intellectual shallowness of McCain, who graduated 894th out of 899 in his Naval Academy class, which he apparently got into through his Dad’s influence anyhow. We have seen what happens to our economy, international relations, and civil liberties from 8 years of Good ‘Ole Boy George – our country cannot afford 4 more years of thoughtless rule with little insight or wisdom.
Anyway, off-topic, I know, and welcome to blogging! I do think ABC News is objective, and some criticism by others above seems to shed light on their own ignorance – don’t they realize you will be reporting for a whole week on the Republican convention too??? At that point will other comments claim you are biased for talking about McBush for a week?

Dear Mr. Gibson:
I wonder if Obama has thought about how much the normal everyday life for their children will be affected if he wins the election.
I thought I heard something about them playing soccer, and then there are the sleep overs that children like to do. I believe it will be rather difficult for the children to do a lot of things that children their age like to do.
President Kennedy’s children could escape to the Kennedy compound in Massachusetts and spend time playing with their cousins.
President Carter put their daughter in public school for a while, and I believe that did not work.
I just feel sorry for the children if Obama wins, because their normal child hood life will not be the same.

Charlie: Welcome to you and your blog. I do not usually blog, but sometimes write a comment to the Chicago Tribune, and later see it when it is posted on Google or Goodsearch. I have read many of the above responses & I understand why people see you as “presenting all the information without any bias”; as a retired elementary school teacher/librarian, I felt the obligation to present all the aspects of any subject without bias. As a priest commented to me the other day, “I know you couldn’t talk about God and religion in the Library…” I replied, “the library covers all topics”, and I had the luxury, the responsibility, and the honor to present it all, even in its simplest form.” Charlie, your work as a newscaster and my work as a teacher librarian are very closely related.
Even now, as a retired teacher, I continue to see all sides of an issue and in simple conversations, present all of the aspects; it’s so much a part of me, that I cannot close my eyes to any issue. I try to keep an open mind, too. God bless you and keep “The Newser” going. Say, is that word going to make the dictionary publish a new edition? I’m all for it.

We vote these people into office time after time and they promise us so much…and never keep thier word. We give these people very good wages…vacation….the best health insurance in the world…what do they give us in return….lies and more lies. One of these days the American people will get smart and see the truth in all these people….follow the money…see what lies at the end of the road….we are being sold out to the highest bidder….Lobby’s!! It is all about ECONOMICS…we need to be able to take care of ourselves…we need to Stop allowing Washington to manipulate our ECONOMICS and selling us down the river!!

Dear Charlie,
Hope that’s OK. I watch you every night, then turn to Brian Williams for the nightcap. Both of you outstanding. I wonder what is your take on this “lack of experience” issue that keeps hounding Mr. Obama. how many of our presidents have had experience in leading a country? Is there a course you take, or is it the fact that one glad hands other world leaders, just as experienced, or maybe took the same course. How much experience, or course work does it take to bankrupt a nation, we are you know, or take a nation to war?
I end with a quote, “Experience teaches only the teachable.” Aldous Huxley

Just a note on the GOP VP profile offered on the ABC World News for Fri. Aug. 29th — the gov. of Alaska doesn’t have “a Down Syndrome baby” but a “child (baby) with Down Syndrome.” “People First” language should be used in thoughtful reporting.

I have always watched you, Mr. Gibson, from the time you were on Good Morning America until now. I never cared if you were a Republican or Democrat. I like World News with you better than any of the other broadcasts. But, now that we know that you and ABC are totally democrats and so terribly biased, I, along with many others, will not watch your broadcast again. We just don’t believe people of your stature should go on air and be so totally prejudiced. If this is what you believed, there is certainly nothing wrong with it, but we just didn’t need to know.

I am amazed that Charlie Gibson would allow a segment about the Republican National Convention parties on his news. We didn’t see parties by lobbiests at the DNC. Why is the news so slanted in the democratic favor? Is the world supposed to stop because of a hurricane?

Posted by: Donald George | September 1, 2008, 7:05 pm 7:05 pm

I certainly wish FOX would have a world news program for those of us that use an antenna for our television viewing. It would help to see news with a different view. If ABC viewers will watch carefully during Brian Ross’s segment, “The Money Trail”, there is a graphic entry showing what appears to be coins and currency randomly shuffled across a surface. If you look closely, the graphic artist has chosen to put Elephants on the $1,000 bills and the Donkey bills only merit a $500 denomination. From what I can tell all of the coins have Elephants, or at least the ones where the image is clear. Also, you must look carefully to notice maybe 5 partial Donkey images across all of the currency as compared to the 12 or more clearly visible Elephant images. ABC uses the same graphic entry for both the DNC and the RNC conventions. I am quite sure this is not a graphic faux pas. Why don’t you just go ahead and put President Bush and John McCain’s image on all of the currency and just admit your bureaus bias.

Charlie, I just saw your report from NO and am disgusted. The smirkiness when you reported about Govenor Palin’s 17 year old daughter pregnancy was revolting. Why did you not mention that they were forced to divulge a private matter regarding their underage daughter because of the smear democratic blogs that distorted the facts and tried to imply that the child with downs syndrome was actually that of the daughter.

I feel that there should have been a Republican reporting on the Democratic Convention and all of their partying, maybe harrass them as you have the Republicans. These parties were planned and paid for long before Gustav, sorry they didn’t plan in advance for a storm. They did however use the Convention and some of the parites to help raise money for the victims of the storm (but lets only focus on the negative you seem to be good at that.)
ABC News now stands for

Mr. Gibson,
Excuse me for being a bit jaded, but ABC, as well as the rest of the main stream media, has moved in lock-step by pouncing on a juicy bit of private family information regarding Sarah Palin’s daughter, but completely ignors the 880 pound gorilla in the room by ignoring Senator Obama’s close association and dealings with known felons(Rezko) and extreme left-wing radical proponents(Ayers). Use the same light of day to shine upon Obama and how he got his home, who his friends and mentors are, how Obama’s wife got a 160% increase in her pay right after he became a U S Senator and got a million dollar + earmark for her hospital. Take the gloves off and be a real news reporter, not a biased voice of Democratic propoganda…focus on the real news which will easily show that the “O” is glitter on the outside and a big hollow space on the inside.

As a female, I am appauled that John McCain has asked Gov. Palin to be his VP. I think he is trying to get the Hillary Clinton voters, does he really think the female race is that stupid. As for me, I have been undecided until now. Thank you Sen. McCain for making my decision easier! I will be voting for Obama/Biden this Novemeber.

Since Sarah Palin’s nomination, most media attention has focused on her versus McCain. This Palin attention may be the exact strategy the Republicans are banking on to take the heat off the top of their ticket. Since she is not accessible to the media, they are prolonging her mystery. Interesting strategy which seems to be working with the media and possibly fulfilling the Republican strategists wishes. I am not impressed with how the Republicans have handled this… secrecy once again. Obama has my vote.

It’s perfectly okay for Palin to veto the Alaskan budget for housing for single moms but it’s not okay to challenge Palin about her attitude towards teaching abstinence for teens . It didn’t work for her daughter but it’s supposed to work for everyone else.
She said that she didn’t want the money for that bridge but that was before she said she did want that money. She lied on national TV. Will Gibson say that when he interviews Palin? She said she was against earmarks but that was before she sent a lobbyist and got loads of earmarked money for her little town of 9000 people.
It took her 6 years at almost as many colleges to get her B.A. degree. Hmmm! Do we really want someone like that to be a heartbeat away from the Presidency
Is Charlie Gibson going to ask her about her vast foreign experience which makes her eligible to take over if old McCain croaks?
This is so pathetic. She’s a great basketball star; a beauty queen; her husband sits in on her meetings; she’s a great orator; and was the Mayor of 9000 people!!! McCain is out of his mind. She’s probably fun to talk to, go to Chuckie Cheese, have a drink, be the next door neighbor – but haven’t we learned anything in the last 8 years. She’s like Bush – a fun gal but that’s all folks!!
Our economy is in a total mess; our schools are not addressing the 21st Century; Greenland is melting and these republicans don’t believe global warming is a problem; 40 million are un insured and millions more experience outrageous healthcare bills; we’re enmeshed in a middle-eastern war that has historically swallowed armies from the Romans to the Russians; the world no longer sees America as a Land of Hope and Optimism; like the Russians in Berlin we wall our borders and create FEAR constantly; the mortgage crisis appears to be swallowing up the dreams of many families who worked hard to buy their homes ; Jobs are above 6% in unemployment; Our Debt is astronomical – TRILLIONS+ ; All very depressing… McCain voted 90% with BUSH and we are supposed to believe that McCain is going to change things?
After 8 years, Wake up America , we need a change!

I am disappointed to read that you intend to limit your questions to Sarah Palin to what she did as mayor of Wasilla and her policy positions as governor for two years. The possibility that she may become President Palin requires that we know a great deal more about her. I am not speaking about her family members. It is correct that they remain off-limits … but the following questions, among others, need to be asked … and answered:
How does your brief experience in running the government of the only state in the union with an economic surplus (fueled by oil and huge federal government hand-outs) prepare you for dealing with the rest of non-subsidized America?
What is your position on sex education?
What is your position on birth control?
What is your position on public education?
What is your position on teaching religious doctrine (i.e. creationism) in public schools?
What do you think about those hospitals and clinics where legal abortions take place?
Do you think doctors that perform abortions should be prosecuted or worse?
Did you actually suggest banning books from the public library in Wasilla?
Why did you fire or force out the local librarian in Wasilla?
Do you really believe that there is no human responsibility for global warming?
How long would you leave our troops in Iraq?
What should America do about Iran?
What should America do about South Ossetia?
Do you support possible military action against Iran?
If so, exactly where would you suggest finding the troops to do that?
What do you believe America should do exactly about Afghanistan?
How should they do it?
Do you still support those millions of dollars of tax earmarks you asked for and received for Alaska?
Did you not support those millions of dollars for the Bridge to Nowhere until it was cancelled by Congress?
Did you return that money after that project was
cancelled?
Do you really believe that God called for that pipeline in Alaska?
Do you really believe that God called on us to attack Iraq?
What was/is your relationship with the Alaska separatist movement?
Did they or do they support secession from the United States?

Just heard you’ll interview Sarah Palin soon. Please don’t participate in one of those all too frequent “puff pieces.”
Ask tough questions.
Don’t end up a laughingstock like so many before you.

You could ask Gov. Palin: How does your nomination as VP fit into the Republican committment to “Country First”?

Posted by: Ardy Hagen | September 8, 2008, 11:16 am 11:16 am

Hey Charlie please ask Gov. Palin about race relations and diversity. I’m interested on how a Gov from a state with only .38% Hispanics and 4% blacks is going to guide such a diverse population in the lower 48. Also ask about issues, which are horrid, with its Native population,

Posted by: Simon Magus | September 8, 2008, 4:58 pm 4:58 pm

Hi!
Just ask Palin this:
Although Republicans have been in charge of the White House and Congress for most of the last eight years, you, John McCain, and most of the speakers at the Republican convention said you want to change the Washington elite; that Washington is broken. In specific terms, what would you do to make change and how would you enlist the help of your own party, which it sounds you think is a big part of the problem?
Follow-up (after pressing for specifics)
Republicans filibustered dozens of potential bills, essentially stopping much legislation from being enacted that the majority of Americans supported. Do you see that as a problem?

Dear Mr. Gibson, I was about to give up on network news until I tuned in for the Hilary / Obama debate on ABC moderated by you and George. I didn’t know honesty at a major news network existed until that evening. Ever since that night, I tune in regularly. Thank you both.

Dear Mr. Gibson:
I wish you the best of success during your interviews with Sarah Palin. The whole country will be watching.
My best advice is for you to DO YOUR JOB as a professional journalist. You have trained your entire career for this opportunity to provide illumination and clarity about Sarah Palin.
We need to understand NOW whether she is the real deal or an illusion.
We are depending on you to help us discover the answer.
The stakes couldn’t be higher.

So interesting to read this blog::Hopefully you and George will try to develop some objective honesty one day. Where is Walter–you all did have a role model to look up to!!Do you realize how many people wanted him to run for president::Mr. Cronkite would have had the biggest land slide victory known to man. Try copy him just a little. By the way I loved the great Lockhead party they threw for the republicans–”French get air tanker deal”!!Please why don’t some of you address Carl Rove–satin among us.!!

I just viewed your interview with Sarah Palin. I cannot believe that you would treat B. Obama with the superior attitude that you displayed in your interview with Palin. I hope the rest of the interview is more balanced.

Posted by: Jim B | September 11, 2008, 7:00 pm 7:00 pm

I have always liked your interview style until I saw you interview Sarah Palin. You can off looking like a jerk. Only Washington insiders would know off the cuff what the “Bush Doctrine” stated and you reminded me of a smug person that had the answer and Palin didn’t and you weren’t going to share until she looked stupid. The poorly cut video made me wonder what you left out.

Posted by: Vickie | September 11, 2008, 7:27 pm 7:27 pm

Excellent interview, any individual who follows or cares about this country understood with the Bush Doctrine was about. It is the reason for the war in Iraq and that is why people need to read, listen and ask questions of our leaders.
Thank you Mr. Gibson for an excellent job.

I was very disillusioned with Charlie Gibson’s interview of Sarah Palin. His condescending approach to interviewing her appeared very clearly partison. I have never witnessed him in such an approach (with glasses hanging from his nose, like the professor trying to trip up a student who hasn’t attended class). If he is planning to interview others in the future, I would hope he can be more objective, so the audience does not clearly know his views …why not interview Senator Obama with the same rigor and condescending approach.

Posted by: Mary | September 12, 2008, 2:32 pm 2:32 pm

I encourage anyone who tapes news to go back and watch the first interview Charlie did with Obama. Noone can watch that and agree that his interview with Palin was fair.
I am finished with ABC. I hope the canidates know that the public dosn’t care if they NEVER APPEAR ON ABC, CBS, NBC, ETC.
JUST GIVE ME FOX FROM NOW ON.

mr. gibson I am appalled with your conduct and the condescending attitude ,you showed no respect to mrs. palin. I enjoyed most of your interviews in the past. what the hell was that all about.I can’t beleive you’re behavior.you are better than that.

Charlie,
The way you treated Sarah Palin was so disrespectful. You are even more of a hypocrite than I had originally thought. How dare you question Sarah’s experience when your token child has less than two years of political experience and is running for president, not VP. The way that you drilled Sarah and the way that you continuously interrupted her was so degrading. You are just another reason why your network is failing. Did you ever think that you are not qualified to do the interview with Sarah? Hopefully you can remain more objective and less partisan next time. Matt

Posted by: Matt | September 12, 2008, 10:58 pm 10:58 pm

I have just seen all but the last ten minutes of your 20/20 program. I am not a regular watcher of your program. After what I have just seen, I certainly will not be. Never have I seen such an example of superciliousness in attitude and questions. This is gotcha interviewing at its worst. Even Gibson’s body language showed ultimate disdain. The introduction before the interview was similar–designed to tear down any positive impression we might have had about her. Why in the world would Sarah Palin and John McCain agree to collaborate with such a hatchet job? I don’t think even Chris Matthews or Keith Olbermann would treat her more dismissively.

Posted by: Kenneth M. Taggart | September 12, 2008, 11:04 pm 11:04 pm

Charlie..I used to be a fan of yours until I realized how bias and partisan you are, which is clearly reflected in your blog and now in your interview with Sarah Palin. You were a disrespectful bully and I am so proud of her for holding her own. She answered your questions with grace and wasn’t distracted by your reactions (calling her huberous, drilling her about the bush doctrine, and looking away as she was talking). FYI: Obama didn’t know what the Bush doctrine was either and neither did you until you researched it online before posing the question.

Charles Gibson YOUR A JERK FOR TRYING TO STUMBLE AND TRIP UP SARA PALIN AND EMBARRASS HER WITH THAT BUSH DOC TRICK .

Posted by: John/Specialized | September 13, 2008, 6:44 pm 6:44 pm

Mr. Gibson is supposed to be a respected Journalist and his conduct with Mrs. Palin was FAR from professional. It was the sort of thing you expect to see from a lessor credentialed personality. I would expect he shows the same disrespect and utter disregard for his subjects opinions & responses when he speaks with Mr. Obama.

Posted by: Scott | September 14, 2008, 11:07 am 11:07 am

I have lost all respect for you Charlie Gibson since your interview or should I say interrogation of Gov. Sarah Palin. Your body language said it all. I will no longer watch ABC news as it is just one of the many liberally slanted news shows. The liberal media would never think of treating Obama the way Gibson treated Gov. Palin. And by the way, despite trying to trip her up, she came across beautifully. If there is any credibility to ABC as a news station then you should interrogate Obama in the same manner.

Posted by: Nancy | September 14, 2008, 10:39 pm 10:39 pm

I was very surprised at Charlie Gibson’s attitude toward Sarah Palin. He was condescending to say the least. It was as if he were looking at her and we could see that he thought she was just a silly woman who had the audacity to run for VP !! I used to like him, but for him to treat one of the world’s great women this way, I can honestly say that I don’t like him anymore and I won’t watch any of his shows. His loss, not mine!
Sorry Charlie…you made a big boo boo.

bias in the media? One day charlie will stand before God and lets hope he will ask the same questions on abortion or stem cell research and lets see how his response is thenI personally dont watch ABC news because of charlie I think he is a low class low rated jouralist but because of all the upset of this interview I watched it,he is the biggest disgrace that could ever come across our tv sets and I hope after all is said and done McCain and Paulin win and have him fired off the show because abc will never do it for the ratings.Charlie you are the loser any network station could have found but then again youre station is low class and had to do something to try and get some ratings.

I have highly respected Charlie Gibson for many years but was appaled at the treatment he gave Senator Palin. He was so condescending and rude to her, did not allow her to answer without interrupting. I expected more of you than that, Charlie Gibson, and was highly disappointed. You have certainly fallen down in my eyes as far as respect for your journalism.

Charlie, you did a fine job with the Sarah Palin interview, as an undecided voter (reg. Inde) it is important that you got right into knowing who this woman is and testing her. We, as voters have only a short time to “vet her ourselves” and I applaud you for treating her like any other candidate, as you always do.
All of this bantor about no one knowing what the Bush doctrine is/was, must live under a rock, I was shocked she had no clue. Pre-emptive attacks to enforce national security, how could anyone NOT know this??? It’s an alarming methodology based on how poorly we gather intel. these days.
I still have not decided on who to vote for, I am not hearing anything concrete on the issues that matters most to me, which are the economy and energy independence. I am hearing broad stroke ideas, but nothing specific.
Again, thank you for your hand in the public vetting of Sarah Palin, I think the interview proved she is not ready for the national stage, but then, I do NOT pick Presidents based on their VPs.

What is your comments to … “When will journalists begin to be outraged by this manipulation of the press. Our country is in crisis and the McCain campaign has selected someone as the VP nominee who they will not allow to be covered. What is happening to us as a country? Sarah Palin could be President. We–the American voter–have a right to know whether or not she’s ready for prime time.” by TW

Charlie shame on you, look at yourself in the video transcript talking down to Sarah Palin like shes in the principals office. You look like a bully, thats how we will always remember you… as a bully who had a chance to have some respectable interview but missed the mark. I would love to see you treat Biden or Obama like that. The media is a disgrace, I hope your rating go down the toilet.

charles krauthammer has exposed charles gibson. as the creator of the phrase, he indicates that the “bush doctrine” has had several meanings throughout the bush presidency, and that the most recent and applicable one, was stated in bush’s second inaugural address: …”The best hope for peace in our world is the expansion of freedom in all the world.” sorry, charlie, washington insiders know that it is NOT …”the right of anticipatory self-defense.” so next time, charlie, just get to the point of your question and maybe you won’t embarrass yourself.

I thought very highly of you until recently. i thought you were fair and open minded. I do not believe that you are neutral in your views and comments in your campaign. It has made me less likely to watch the station when you are giving a report. I am glad that you are not moderating the presidential debate this year.

Did all the things right. Did not use credit more than I could pay of monthly.
Even lived on concrete for 2 years after ripping out my carpet…secondary to a bad dog. Because I refused to buy on credit.
I have a >800 credit score. My homes value has decreased and my 401-k and stocks have plummeted..you know saving for retirement.
NOW I am helping out by taxes finance this big bailout. Some idiot said those of us not in foreclosure should feel happy. That those foreclosure properties decrease our property values.
Not very comforting…alot of these people should not have obtained mortgages in the first place or they obtained mortgages that were too good to be true.

Hi Charlie,
I have been a listener to your broadcasts for years! Too many to count!
I was amazed about your story about the infected player. A good surgeon tells you beforehand what your risks are. I was told by my back surgeon that over the more than 7000 surgeries he had done only one minor infection and no deaths. The same goes for my knee surgeon. Every surgeon I have had from open heart surgeon on, they tell you what you can expect!
I wish you would tell your listeners about this!
Good luck and keep it going!

I lost all respect for Charlie Gibson.
He won. He did what he wanted to do in the interview with Sarah Palin. Before the interview it was settled in his mind that he presented his views and try to convince everyone to vote for Obama.
Everytime ABC national news comes on, I change channels. No Charlie. No Katie.
They won. We lost. There is no way we can make a difference on anything with them. Why listen to them at all and their lopsided views?
They ABC, CBS, NBC all cover themselves with the same quilt. What they say is not important anymore. Sean Hannity is right. Journalism is dead.
Who cares what you Charlis says anymore?

Mr.Gibson,
You are really out of touch with the “grassroots people” maybe you should get out more and be less biased in your reporting.
Those tea parties were formed by us, and we will continue. What we are protesting is not TAXES per se, but overspending, collective policies, but mostly about wanting the TRUTH. We want Congress and the “Chicago Political Machine” Whitehouse to say what they mean and mean what they say. We do not trust Republicans (they doubled the debt in the past 8 years) and we do not trust the Dems with their restructuring America.
We are disgusted with all the self serving politicians, the power brokers in Washington, and the lack of special prosecuter investigation into Fannie and Freddie where this all started.
