Hurricane Gustav & The Politcal Storm
Hurricane Gustav (it was upgraded late today) is on track for the Gulf of Mexico. It is expected to make landfall in the US early Tuesday morning. That of course means landfall is expected during the Republican Party’s convention in St. Paul, Minnesota. All of this comes on the three year anniversary of Hurricane Katrina — a low point for the Bush administration. The AP notes the confluence of events:
Gustav could be perfect political spin storm

WASHINGTON — Hurricane Katrina was a natural disaster that turned into a political one for the Bush administration.
Now, with Gustav on course for the Gulf Coast almost three years to the day since Katrina struck, comes a chance for redemption or point-scoring in the presidential campaign.
Since Katrina, which struck New Orleans on August 29, 2005, the public has paid closer attention to how its government copes with hurricanes.
Forecasters predicted Gustav would be just south of the Louisiana coast Monday night, making landfall Tuesday. Another tropical storm also was developing off the Atlantic.
If the administration fumbles the response again, Democrats will likely pounce, especially given that Gustav could make landfall in the midst of the Republican National Convention in Minnesota.
If the administration does well by the public, Republicans can crow.
And if the storm never comes ashore, the nation will wait until next time.

This is not about the blog but about you personally and your correct reporting of news stories. Last nite, the 29th, you reported on some damage at ASU in Tempe, AZ. You clearly stated severe damage to ASU stadium which was totally incorrect. The damage happened to a temporary structure erected for football and band practice in an air conditioned atmosphere. It will be re-erected shortly. Certainly not so as concerns the stadium.

Comments concerning the “government’s” failure to deal with Katriina focused on the federal government. What about the failures of the city mayor and governor? What about the people of the city themselves? Adults acting like children, expecting the government to take care of them. And what about the news media, with huge resources? What have you done other than fomenting discontent and anger rather than a sense of cooperation. Where are your trucks and helicopters when people need rides to safety? I heard there is a need for communications equipment to face Gustav. Why don’t you try helping solve the problems instead of trying to stir up more?
