It’s Palin

Sarah Palin is McCain’s VP. "John McCain throwing a long ball here," says our George Stephanopoulos, and adding that the McCain campaign became convinced of the need to chose a woman and to shake up the race. She is 44 years old, mother of five, governor of Alaska since 2006 and before that Mayor of Wasilla, AK. Much more to come.

User Comments

Wasilla’s estimated population for 2003 is 6,715. Assume now that it is 10,000.
She has been governor for under 2 years but how is running this town which is almost smaller than my kid’s local public high school experience??
We will find out how stupid this country is.

shallow McCain, shallow. A pure public relations move. Should you be elected it is HIGHLY likely that you will become incapacitated at some point during your term of office. Is this governor of Alaska remotely qualified or experienced to be President? You have been pounding on Obama’s youth and inexperience so you pull the most flagrant, hypocritical, and frankly desperate move to remain in the spotlight. Do you think that because you picked a woman, women will forget that you want to take the choice away from them as to what they can do with their bodies?

All I can say is that she is not Hillary. Hillary is a person who was qualified to be President who happened to be a woman. The Republicans choice of Sarah Palin says to me “OK ladies, here’s your token woman”. I’m disgusted.

I trend republican, and support gun rights, and not too keen on abortion (for ethical reasons, I’m atheist). I’m also a woman. You’d think this would be a match.
But no way. I’m not going to vote for anyone who’ll restrict abortion. You can reduce without restricting it. You give those unwanted pregnant women medical care, adoption services, and reeducation possibilities to move on with their lives – THAT’S how you reduce abortion, not letting women die in back alleys somewhere.
If the Hillary Supporters go for this ticket in anger – god help every woman in this country. S’all I’m saying. Roe v. Wade will be overturned faster than a flapjack at IHOP.

This woman is against the woman’s fundamental right to decide, she has no experience, no charisma, no understanding of the world and no education. If McSame believes that all women are stupid and he choses a token and they will follow him, that is an insult to all American women. God save America from McSame.

“I’ve been blessed with the right timing here,” Palin said before the election. “There’s no doubt that Alaskans right now are dealing in an atmosphere of distrust of government and industry.”
On Aug. 1, she scored a major victory when the Alaska legislature passed a bill that authorizes her administration to award a license to TransCanada Alaska to build a 1,715-mile natural gas pipeline from Prudhoe Bay on Alaska’s North Slope to a hub in Canada.
The pipeline would be the largest construction project in the history of North America. If completed as hoped within ten years, it would ship 4.5 billion cubic feet of natural gas per day. The United States imported about 10 billion cubic feet of natural gas per day in 2007.

An obvious pander move! If McCain and his “Rovers” think an anti-choice woman on the ticket will siphon off the Hillary supporters, they’d better think again. I’m a pro-choice senior citizen who didn’t vote for Hillary but truly appreciate her fight for women’s right to choose. I don’t think the PUMAs will fall for this, but if they do then Phyllis Schlafly and James Dobson will have won, not the disgruntled Hillary supporters.

I applaud the attempt of the McCain campaign to make history and have a woman as second in command, but it feels too staged and forced. Why did the public not have much of a hint about Palin, who she was and her political stance until now? Was it perhaps because she was a last minute decision?
You cannot have as one of your political cornerstones experience (26 years in Senate) and blast Obama for his lack of experience on one hand and then pick a governor who has essentially as much experience as he does and not be hypocritical.
I do not have enough knowledge on Palin to make an informed decision about her individually as a candidate but McCain’s decision to nominate her and contradict his stance on experience just made me officially an Obama supporter.

Posted by: godisnotapoliticalparty | August 29, 2008, 11:23 am 11:23 am

What historic event? For all you young kids out there we already had a woman vice president candidate in 1984. Sorry to burst your balloon. This pick shows that McCain doesn’t have the experience or leadership qualities needed to reverse the death spiral we are in from eight years of Bush.

Her husband is already known as “First Dude” in Alaska. Her own nickname is Sarah Barracuda because of her tenacity. Her oldest son is in the Army and her youngest son was born with Down’s Syndrome. Her popularity in Alaska is phenomenal, in the 80s and 90s. She is an energy expert, and just recently signed her plan to build a natural gas pipeline, which is a huge achievement in her administration, and Alaska’s natural gas can begin flowing into hungry energy markets all across the USA. I read her bio, How a Small Town Mom Turned Alaska’s Political Establishment on Its Ear, a month ago, and I’ve been keeping up on the Draft Palin for VP site for months. I knew this was a long shot, but this payoff feels so good. Thanks McCain! I’d like to see Romney as Secretary of State.

This pick demostrates McCain lack of judgement. If…god forbid McCain dies during the course of his presidency Palin becomes president. Someone with NO foreign policy credentials. Mayor of a town with the population of 3,000. And govenor of a small state for a year and a half. This is the biggest risk McCain has ever taken I believe and after a debate with Biden……. McCain has just handed Obama the presidency.

Palin buried her “male” opponents in Alaska. She cleaned up the corruption in – both Republican and Democrats.

She has 8 more years executive experience than Obama. She is dealing with matters of national importance such as our energy supply. The population of Alaska is a non issue. it has massive importance to the nation for resource development and independence from foreign oil.
Her experience is crucial on this ticket. How about Obama talking a new kind of politics by picking a Washington insider who is an old white man. A new kind of politics is Sarah Palin.

This is a truly ridiculous pick. I don’t know much about Ms. Palin, so I have no specific criticism of her, but for McCain to pick someone with so little experience, particularly in foreign policy, when he will be – if elected – one of the oldest presidents ever, is just mind-numbing. McCain’s choice is so transparently cynical: he hopes to pick up disaffected Hillary supporters. Women of all political persuasions should know better: this is not a feminist statement – if anything it’s an anti-feminist statement. “Didn’t get your way with Hillary? We’ll give you Palin!” It’s ludicrous and McCain should be taken apart by the punditry for this nonsense.

Posted by: beth | August 29, 2008, 11:33 am 11:33 am

If Mccain is so concerned about experience, why did he make this pick? Does he think she has the experience to be commander and chief? If Barack Obama’s ‘lack of experience’ puts this country in danger if he is elected, what happens to the country if president Mccain is elected and then dies or becomes incapacitated? If experience for the office of president is such a fundamental criteria for Mccain, what does this VP pick reveal about his judgement? Who is the real Mccain? His campaign is either cynical or disoriented.

Becky, you won’t be embarrassed for her when she’s VP, so don’t waste your tears.

Posted by: Jennifer | August 29, 2008, 11:34 am 11:34 am

Wow, very hilarious to see the vicious attacks by Obama supporters. Clearly you’re worried.
Here is why I see Palin sealing the deal here for McCain victory:
1. Argument: She is inexperienced. Anwer: She is as experienced as Obama. Additionally, you put your experienced candidate on the TOP of the ticket. Obama/Biden is UPSIDE DOWN. This choice will accentuate that.
2. Female. Will get Hillary Clinton supporters (not all but many). HRC gives a speech on the monumental nature of her run, now we have a chance to make a real monument.
3. HRC can now with a straight face say she considers McCain/Palin a good ticket because there’s a female on the ticket, and HRC needs to maintain her trailblazer image she is now adopting.
4. Palin is a real conservative, and as tough as HRC.
5. This choice shows McCain is getting beyond the old GOP.
6. Biden cannot viciously attack Palin, as he had planned on doing, for fear of the Obama/Biden ticket looking ant-feminist.
It’s over people, Palin was a bold choice, not a weak safe choice like Obama’s.

Palin will be a chew toy for Biden and for most women, who are pro-choice, she will be a big turn-off. He’s courting the religious right, big deal. Obama can win without the evangelicals. Hillary supporters will view this as a cynical choice and only the most delusional will vote for McCain. And Palin has less experience than Obama–add it up.

Posted by: April Campbell | August 29, 2008, 11:35 am 11:35 am

Great move. She has more exverience running a government than any of the other three. She knows more about oil and energy than obama could ever dream about. Historic? Does anyone actually know history? 1984: Geraldine Ferraro – 1st female VP nominee. And how did that go again?

Posted by: Leroy | August 29, 2008, 11:37 am 11:37 am

If the selection of a VP is a true measure of a presumptive Presidential candidate’s judgement, McCain just lost this election — BIG TIME!!! Congratulations, President-elect OBAMA!

Posted by: Howard Gallas | August 29, 2008, 11:37 am 11:37 am

They must be out of thier mind, she is no Hillary. Hillary supporters don’t need a woman because of her part. They need someone that has been their for them. McCain took all of Bush and Karl Rove people and could not make a good judgement of his own.

Leroy,
I’m not saying historic ticket, I’m saying HISTORIC PRESIDENCY – McCain/Palin is almost assured victory. It’s over people!

Posted by: JA | August 29, 2008, 11:38 am 11:38 am

Obama has been in an elected office for 12 years.
Eight as an Illinois Senator and four as a U.S. Senator. Obama represented a large state for 12 years.
Palin was mayor of a small town, population of 3,000. My school had more then 3,000 students. Heck she was probably class president. She governed a small state for a year and half. The “inexperience” factor has been taken off the table for McCain.
God forbid McCain dies during his presidency. Is this the women you would want has your presidenct? She’s 44 and has no real experience. Imagine her in a debate with Biden. It’s almost sad. Biden wouldn’t even have to try.
McCain has just taken the biggest risk of his life and I don’t think it will pay off.

Posted by: Vanessa | August 29, 2008, 11:38 am 11:38 am

IZZY are you serious?
Hillary and Palin are at OPPOSITE ends of the political spectrum.
If all you care about is that she’s a woman, vote for Brittney Spears. She at least seems to share your capacity for intellegent thought.
I supported Hillary in the primary, but Palin in no way “continuing what Hillary started”. Palin sets us back 40 years!

President McCain – get use to it!

It is interesting that shortly after an announcement like this that so many people are ready to offer up an opinion about qualifications, abilities and positions. Obama has been given his opportunity to talk about his experience and abilities, let’s extend the same opportunity to Palin.

The DNC ALLOWED SEXIST BIAS TO HANDICAP THE ONLY WOMAN IN THE RACE. When Tucker Carlson said that Hillary Clinton was a CASTRATOR, the DNC WAS SILENT. When Chris Matthews said that Bill Clinton’s INFIDELITY was the ONLY REASON for Hillary Clinton’s achievements, the DNC WAS SILENT. When the MEDIA CIRCUS unleashed a sexist onslaught of criticism against Senator Clinton regarding: her laugh, her cleavage, her pants, her wrinkles, her earrings, her “bitchiness,” her emotional “instability” the DNC WAS SILENT.

WHAT? HUH? CAN YOU HEAR THIS NOW DONC!!!

What’s amazing to me is that the disgruntled Hillary supporters are jumping over to McCain, and now Palin, even though there are fundamental differences.
Do these Hillary supporters not care about Roe vs. Wade? Rights for gays and lesbians?
Sounds like it’s just about sticking it to Obama for coming out ahead, not making an informed decision based on your beliefs.

Posted by: Amazed | August 29, 2008, 11:40 am 11:40 am

Lets look at this from both sides before we jump down McCains throat, She may not be the big name that many of us wanted him to pick, but let us remember with each of the big names came big baggage, From what I can find about her she is level headed and reform minded, which speaks a lot about the man who picked her. We need a big change in washington, and this could be just the Ticket to get it done

Posted by: wendell | August 29, 2008, 11:40 am 11:40 am

Sarah Palin has more experience than Obama already. And besides, she’s running for VP and he’s running for President.
She’s a reformer. Maybe she can do something about Rezko, the slimebag.
I like the pick. It’s an all different election now.

Posted by: midwestlady | August 29, 2008, 11:42 am 11:42 am

This is clearly a choice predicated upon Senator McCain’s and the RNC’s desire to capitalize on disgruntled Hillary supporters. If the McCain campaign is so delusional as to think that by simply nominating a woman, albeit a conservative woman of little experience, for the VP position, they are out truly of touch. I was for Hillary Clinton. I am very familiar with Hillary Clinton’s record and platform. Sarah Palin is no Hillary Clinton.

Brilliant McCain – brilliant! The Obamabots and the media media are in a lose-lose situation!

OK, you democrats. Let me ask you a question. How come the Democratic Party is for pro-choice and when a family that wants to put their children in a school of their choice via vouchers, you guys shoot the idea down, but yet Obama sent his own children to the best school money can buy. He voted against school vouchers. See, he is not for change, he is a typical politician. And I love his personal story about his family making sacrifices for him and working hard, but yet he is telling you that you depend on government to provide for you.

Brilliant choice!
John McCain has proved that he is a Republican maverick, who wants “change” too.
Conservative fiscal change– that is.
Instead, of Obama wanting America to redistribute $845 billion dollars to fight global poverty at a time when the U.S. has a $9.54 trillion dollar national debt.

Posted by: USmarine0331 | August 29, 2008, 11:45 am 11:45 am

One of the commentators on the TV net work made a comment that the choice of VP has little bearing on the outcome of the election because the voter focuses on the Presidential candidate. I don’t know how far this is true. At this time as a Hillary supporter, I am totally unhappy with the Democratic Party and Obama. I will take time to watch and hear John McCain and his VP candidate and will make a decision in November to vote Republican or stay home.

Posted by: Kris | August 29, 2008, 11:45 am 11:45 am

Posted by: Joe | August 29, 2008, 11:46 am 11:46 am

Two weeks ago I told my dh that McCain needs to pick Palin! It’s good to be right! lol! The only problem I have with her is her stance on abortion. My dh & I are voting a split ticket…McCain/Palin for pres/vp & dems for senate & house. So long as no party is in control of both houses of congress and the executive, I can sleep comfortably.
As for the abortion issue, repealing Roe v Wade will not make abortion illegal; it will leave the choice up to each individual state. Those states that are blue will probably stay pro-choice; those states that are red…well, hopefully its not too far of a drive to a blue state. Maybe this will encourage states to make birth control more accessible & lower the number of abortions.
Too bad Obama didn’t pick Hillary…even though I’m a moderate republican, I would have voted for her as pres; or begrudgingly, as vice pres.
Smart move McCain. But I expected it. Republicans tend to be realists.

Posted by: Lisa | August 29, 2008, 11:46 am 11:46 am

Since the Obamabots and the media say we’re racist if we don’t want Obama, can we say they’re all sexist if they don’t want Palin?
Yeeehaw! This is fun!

Posted by: Jo | August 29, 2008, 11:47 am 11:47 am

Every single one of you who has written that Palin was chosen just because of her gender needs to immediately apologize, just as you called for Geraldine Ferraro to do when she said the same about Obama.
The fact of the matter is that she has an extremely compelling background and life’s story, and as a potential alternative to the first and third most liberal members of the Senate, I’ll consider her.

Posted by: commonsensenj | August 29, 2008, 11:47 am 11:47 am

Obama was right…eight years of the same old GOP is enough. Hence why we have a fresh face with executive experience on the ticket.
I think McCain was both bold and smart to pick someone out of the “Washington box”. She has come virtually out of nowhere to achieve 80-90% approval rankings as governor!
I think this S. Palin will be able to relate to the middle class working families without the skewed politician view on policies and lobbyists.
Thanks to the Democrats for screwing up and not choosing the Obama/Clinton ’08 ticket…that would have been a landslide victory…just proving once again that the Dems can’t get out of their own way on anything.
By the way, you are all talking about this situation with McCain dying and Palin taking over. Let’s look at the other side…what if something happened to Obama and Biden…we would be staring at Pelosi leading this country…talk about scary!

I am an Obama supporter (usually vote Republican) and to answer some of your post – I am worried about Palin. Not for any of the reasons you have posted. I am worried because she is a heartbeat away from the Presidency and has zero experience on the international/national stage. (cue all the lack of Obama experience post now – but he has had experience and judgement when and where it counts) If McCain had picked Romney, Crist or any of the others, we could have a good political debate. (for those interested in policy and not just name-calling – including Obama people) I know McCain supporters are enthusiastic about their party platform, but what a discouraging choice for VP and scary time for America if a 72 year old man with a history of cancer enters the White House with a complete and total beginner as his back up. That is what scares this Obama supporter.

But she just said that she is very pleased with McCain’s pick today. She’ll be watching to see how the press treats this woman.

This is a weird choice … plenty of other republican women McCain should have picked. He just lost a segment of the conservative base that had no where to go (hello 3rd party). Anyone who believes in Hillary (and actually liked her policies) would have to be a complete moron to think Palin stands for the same things. I’m sure Palin’s a good mother and probably a decent governor for oil-rich Alaska. But she should NOT be second in command.

Mindy, this is not historic ticket. The Democrats already put forward a ticket with a woman in the VP slot, Geraldine Ferraro.
This pick doesn’t seem to make sense. They may gain some women voters who were for Hillary mainly because she was a woman, but beyond that the Republicans negated some of their own arguments. They cannot use the experience, in big politics or foreign relations, any more. The Obama campaign had been mentioning experience because the McCain campaign was making it an issue. I doubt you will hear it brought up from the Obama campain if nothing is said from McCain. It seems like the Republicans are now on the defensive, which is not a good thing if they want to gain ground the Dem convention lost them.

Democrats are such deceitful and negative people. First, Palin has just as much experience has Obama considering she accomplished more as a Mayor and Governor in Alaska. While Mayor she slashed property taxes by 60%. She accomplished similar results as Governor and instituted an ethics campaign that resulted in the firing of both Republican and Democratic officials. She is pro-life and for same-sex marriage – a conservative. That does not mean she will drive you deviant liberals in the closet, only that she will NOT support spending government (tax-payer) funds on programs that support liberal life styles lacking good morals and values. Liberals will never get. It is not the hard working, American traditionalist who should be paying for your reckless and irresponsible lifestyles. This is not and has never been a socialist country. If that is what you want move to Canada or Europe. Sara Palin was an excellent choice and like Sen. McCain she is bi-partisan and will fight against big government, more taxes, and pork barrel/ear mark spending costing us over $40 billion a year. Along with McCain she supports campaign and lobbying reform, as well as ethics. Women now have good representation in government and you scoff at that as well.

Meet the Press Interview:
TIM RUSSERT: The fact is you are different than George Bush.
SEN. McCAIN: No. No. The fact is that I have agreed with President Bush far more than I have disagreed. And on the transcendent issues, the most important issues of our day, I’ve been totally in agreement and support of President Bush.

Apparently he also agrees with Bush about putting big oil puppets back in the White House.

Once again McCain proves to be a sexist. He thinks women are going to be hollow in their thoughts and chose a woman just because. WE SUPPORTED HILLARY because she was experienced, not just because she was a woman.
I can’t stand this old man.
McCain mocked Obama for not being experience enough…then he picks an inexperienced gov. for VP….doesn’t make sense.
Let’s face it women, once again, he thinks we’re just stupid!!!!

This was absolutely a poor choice. Sen. McCain – what are you thinking… this is clearly a defensive decision and truly re-actionary.
I’m sorry… You needed more balance on the ticket. No disrespect to Gov. Palin, but who is she… She only has two years of experience. She’s not ready to be Commander in Chief.
Your best argument against Sen. Obama was his not being ready… You negated your argument, and if most of the country being concerned about your age and health… This selection was NOT a good decision… This is an example of your poor judgment…
I can’t support this ticket…

Posted by: M Cook Chalstrom | August 29, 2008, 12:17 pm 12:17 pm

I voted for Hillary because I agreed with her views and I was proud she was a woman. But I didn’t vote for her because she was a woman.
Seems that some women don’t care what policies a person represents – they just want a woman in office. But Gov Palin in no way reflects my values.
I’m still ticked about the primary, probably always will be, but this is ticking me off even more. What a transparent attempt to draw Hillary supporters by using a woman as a token choice. It’s INSULTING!
Screw both parties!

Do you have health care? If you were diagnosised with cancer, would you lose your home to get treatment? People stop acting like children, If you can’t do this for yourselves, since you don’t need anything, then do something for those who need it. I talk to people everyday, who have cancer, and due to lack of health insurance or the lack of ENOUGH health insurance, can’t get treatment for themselves, their chlidren and familes. It’s just not out there.

Yowza. One heartbeat away and we have a governor of the state with about 300,000 less people than my county just outside of Chicago. Seems that takes the “experience” argument right off the table that they’ve been using against Obama.

MIDWEST:
No. not everyone in Alaska is in oil’s pocket. But the governor (who is married to an oil executive by the way) certainly has her career (and personal well being) tied directly to big oil and their continued record profits at the nation’s expense!
Sorry, but being a woman does not automatically make one a good VP choice. And it’s obvious, the decision was either based on her gender or to continue big oil’s influence in Washington.
She has no other accomplishments to validate her selection over the other more qualified individuals. No doubt the contributors and special interest groups working for the oil companies are opening their check books this morning.

McCain doesn’t get it. Hillary received 18 million votes because of her experience and fight for issues important to women. Those women did not vote for her just because she has boobs. The majority of PUMA’s have reorganized post-convention under “NO WAY, NO HOW, NO MCCAIN”.

Posted by: midwestlady | August 29, 2008, 12:46 pm 12:46 pm

I’m confused by the comments of Midwest lady. Senator Obama has 8 years experience as a state senator (of Illinois, in the MIDWEST), and nearly 4 years experience as Illinois U.S. senator). That’s far more than 145 days. Governor Palin served as a council member and mayor of an Alaskan town of 6,000 (8 years) and now has under 2 years as Alaska’s governor. That doesn’t hold a candle to Obama’s or Biden’s experience, much less combined. She may be a decent governor (considering the recent corruption in AK); maybe not ready to be VP or President. I think McCain is using her.

Palin’s EXECUTIVE experience trumps obama’s legislatorial. Furthermore, the “corruption” that all the liberal hacks are referring to is little more than a hyped-up domestic dispute.
Of course, at a place like abcnews.com, it’s not surprising to see so many liberals regurgitating ill-thought out propaganda already being spewed by the obama camp.

midwestlady: I am not a male…I am female… 50 years old. McCain chose this woman for one reason and one reason only to try to win the votes of Hillary’s.
It is an insult to me. Maybe not to you. But to me it is. There are more experienced women he could have picked, what is wrong did they all turn him down because they are voting for Obama this year.
The potential to grab some of those women voters is perhaps the best asset Palin brings to a McCain ticket. She also reinforces McCain’s maverick image. She bucked her own party, launching an ethics investigation into the state party chairman with regard to his dealings with oil companies in the state. And being from Alaska, she’s the ultimate outsider. She also also reinforces McCain’s drilling message — though she’s for drilling in ANWR; McCain is not. She also represents the next generation of Republican leaders — she’s a fresh face.
“A legislative panel has launched a $100,000 investigation to determine if Palin dismissed Alaska’s public safety commissioner because he would not fire the trooper, Mike Wooten,” the AP wrote earlier this month. “Wooten went through a messy divorce from Palin’s sister. Palin has denied the commissioner’s dismissal had anything to do with her former brother-in-law. And she denied orchestrating the dozens of telephone calls made by her husband and members of her administration to Wooten’s bosses. Palin said she welcomes the investigation: ‘Hold me accountable.’”
Although she’s not linked to them, Sen. Ted Stevens and Rep. Don Young are facing legal/ethical troubles. In fact, Stevens’ trial will start in late September, so the Alaska Republican Party is a mess. And Palin’s trooper trouble could play into that.
It will be interesting to see which story line catches on: “Palin, the reformer/maverick”, or “Palin, under investigation?”
The 44-year-old, Idaho-born Palin is Alaska’s first woman governor and the state’s youngest governor as well. Palin, a graduate of the University of Idaho (majored in political science and journalism), was elected mayor of the town of Wasilla when she was 32. After she lost a bid to be lieutenant governor in 2002 — by less than 2,000 votes, raising her statewide profile — she went into the private sector, becoming chairwoman of the Alaska Oil and Gas Conservation Commission.

If I am transparent what do you call this. From some of the GOPs
“Today, John McCain put the former mayor of a town of 9,000 with zero foreign policy experience a heartbeat away from the presidency. Governor Palin shares John McCain’s commitment to overturning Roe v. Wade, the agenda of Big Oil and continuing George Bush’s failed economic policies — that’s not the change we need, it’s just more of the same.”
Rep. Rahm Emanuel:
“Is this really who the Republican Party wants to be one heartbeat away from the Presidency? Given Sarah Palin’s lack of experience on every front and on nearly every issue, this Vice Presidential pick doesn’t show judgment: it shows political panic.”

And how is Palin going to be a NRA lifetime member and have 5 kids. Maybe she cleans her assault rifle with the help of her children from time to time. Enough is Enough, People. The basic, all time question in politics, ARE YOU BETTER OFF TODAY THEN YOU WAS 8 YEARS AGO??? Hell NO!!!

Posted by: B.J. | August 29, 2008, 1:45 pm 1:45 pm

So that gives him reason to spend thousands of dollars to construct a GREEK TEMPLE to stroke his ego with? The man is delusional, come on.

Posted by: midwestlady | August 29, 2008, 1:52 pm 1:52 pm

The GREEK TEMPLE thing was right out of a Michael Jackson stage set.

Posted by: midwestlady | August 29, 2008, 1:53 pm 1:53 pm

You know it was, I saw the video too.

Posted by: midwestlady | August 29, 2008, 1:54 pm 1:54 pm

at least she cry all the way thru her acceptance speach like that wuss Biden. Obama and 80,000 whiners and losers last night in Denver…bunch of crying wimps.

Posted by: obamaloser | August 29, 2008, 1:55 pm 1:55 pm

And as a campaigner, Palin will not be awful. She is really a PR candidate. She is selected to court the press. Palin holds a bachelor’s degree in journalism from the University of Idaho where she also minored in politics. She briefly worked as a sports reporter for local Anchorage television stations. In her hometown pageant, she won Miss Congeniality. She is the queen of the right wing fringe. McCain is really playing games with American lives. This was a stunt and it was condescending to women!

Posted by: Bison | August 29, 2008, 2:00 pm 2:00 pm

I am pleased that voters will have a McCain/Palin and Obama/Biden choice in November. The 2008 policital debate should be, and now can be, about change. Both major political parties offer us a fresh, different, and better alternative to what we’ve had in the White House for eight years.

Posted by: Joey From Virginia | August 29, 2008, 2:02 pm 2:02 pm

She has an obvious attitude for reform that gets me. That’s what I believe John McCain sees too. She reformed tax issues in little Wasilla and as governor already has a track record for creating important changes to established commissions. AND she’s a woman–with vigor like Hillary. I like her! Lots of inexperience in this election but tons of heart. I love it. Go Sarah, Go John !!!

Re: this is a joke RIGHT?? this man thinks people who were for Hillary will now vote for him because he chose a women?
It seems you are questioning the women of this country, Judi. It’s a great day that a new generation of leaders are on the national stage.

Posted by: Christie | August 29, 2008, 2:13 pm 2:13 pm

midwestperson, I also avoid T.V. because of the blatant commercialism. I however must agree with you that stupid is hilarious, and thats why when Im really down in the dumps I watch Mccain try to convince me to vote for him, and I just laugh and laugh!

Posted by: JJ | August 29, 2008, 2:15 pm 2:15 pm

Obama’s true base (some are just angry and soem are good people who have false hopes in Obama)will always support the guy.

Posted by: Christie | August 29, 2008, 2:16 pm 2:16 pm

Probably, Christie, but there’s not as many of them as the Dems seem to think. Generally speaking, the American electorate is more savvy than the Dems always think. It’s why they lose so much.

Posted by: midwestlady | August 29, 2008, 2:17 pm 2:17 pm

Uhhh, yeah lets see, how many of them were at the Dem convention? More than mccain could EVER, and I do mean EVER get to come and listen and support him. Lets see just how many show for the republican convention…

Posted by: JJ | August 29, 2008, 2:21 pm 2:21 pm

McCain cheers you up! That’s good. I like him too. He’s a wonderful candidate.
Obama makes me worry.

Posted by: midwestlady | August 29, 2008, 2:22 pm 2:22 pm

Mccain doesnt need Greek Columns, all he needs is a green screen, haha. Hes not interested in inspiring people, other than his big oil buddies that is.

Posted by: JJ | August 29, 2008, 2:25 pm 2:25 pm

Well, JJ,
The people you saw at the Dem convention were party regulars. They’re in the political business and a fair amount of them get reimbursed for all that noise they make.
I used to be a Democrat delegate in my state. True. And I was a Democrat ward boss in the 70s. No longer. I got a look at the Democrat party from the inside. I am now a conservative independent.

Posted by: midwestlady | August 29, 2008, 2:25 pm 2:25 pm

My guess, JJ, is that you have never held political office. Am I correct?

Posted by: midwestlady | August 29, 2008, 2:26 pm 2:26 pm

The selection of Sarah Palin is an affront to the people of the United States and women everywhere. John McCain is 72 and could have serious health problems or even die in office. For this reason it is especially important that he select a vice president with a good educational background and experience. There are many qualified women to be vice president including many Republicans. But John McCain chose a woman for political reasons to court the conservative base. The Republicans have spent months denouncing Barack Obama’s background in spite of having graduated from Harvard law school, taught constitutional law, spent 12 years in the state legislature and two years in the Senate, Sarah Palin has an undergraduate degree in journalisms, excels in fishing and hunting, was the mayor of a small town, and one term governor with has no serious government experience John McCain has criticized Barack Obama for putting politics before the good of the country in his Iraq policy, which is not true. But this is exactly what John McCain has done in his selection of Sarah Palin.

Posted by: ELZ | August 29, 2008, 2:28 pm 2:28 pm

If you had any knowledge of how politics works, you’d have been able to see that for every folding chair you saw, somebody paid good money. And you can take that to the bank.

Posted by: midwestlady | August 29, 2008, 2:30 pm 2:30 pm

ELZ, perhaps you don’t understand politics. Obama is playing to his base too–all the political pressure groups you saw at the democratic convention. Gays, blacks, minorities. Did you not see them???
Is there any real reason McCain should choose someone his party would hate? Of course not. Use your head.

Posted by: midwestlady | August 29, 2008, 2:32 pm 2:32 pm

yeah right, all those people crying and cheering were being paid to act that way. You are correct though, they will be paid off, by having a President they can trust, who isnt a part of the system, like the worst president in history Bush. Obama will deliver upon all of his promises, guaranteed, unlike McBush who will say and do anything to be elected (including pandering the womens vote with a woman running-mate). He obviously, with his record of talking down to women and cheating on his wife, feels that he needs to do ANYTHING to get their vote. Hes not gonna win the election, face it, hes toast.

Posted by: JJ | August 29, 2008, 2:33 pm 2:33 pm

Obama just Biden time!! 08!!!!

Posted by: JJ | August 29, 2008, 2:38 pm 2:38 pm

Joe’s been Biden his time a long time… It’s a good name for him. He got about 8% of the primary this last time if I remember correctly.
People have been mentioning Biden for national executive office since ummm about McGovern’s run. He hasn’t been able to energize anything in all those elections. How many times has he started a run, I wonder?
My guess is that in 2009, he’ll still be Biden, his time that is.

Posted by: midwestlady | August 29, 2008, 2:41 pm 2:41 pm

He starts out OK because he’s this big alpha male, but then something goes terribly wrong. The best that I can figure, it’s a combination of the hounddog-like yelling and the fact he’s sort of a slovenly odd kind of guy. He comes off as sort of a windbag. It’s a shame really.
But regardless, you don’t want a windbag in a room with Putin. He could get deflated real fast and that would be bad for us.

Posted by: midwestlady | August 29, 2008, 2:45 pm 2:45 pm

Ok so with all his bluster and anger management problems why on earth would we want an old dirigible like Mccain in the same room as Putin? He truly scares even his own party senators with his anger management problems.

Posted by: JJ | August 29, 2008, 2:49 pm 2:49 pm

And you would think with his advanced age, if he ever were going to get over it he wouldve by now. You cant teach an old hound new tricks. He will have this problem till he departs this earth, and because of that alone, he isnt fit to lead our nation. Period.

Posted by: JJ | August 29, 2008, 2:53 pm 2:53 pm

And you think we’d be better off with someone who’s never experienced anything but the halls of Harvard? Obama doesn’t know enough to be in the same room with Putin.

Posted by: midwestlady | August 29, 2008, 2:57 pm 2:57 pm

The first thing he’d do is diss him because he’s white. YOu don’t think Putin would notice?

Posted by: midwestlady | August 29, 2008, 2:57 pm 2:57 pm

Make no mistake, if you read Obama’s autobiography, he dissed his grandparents and his own mother–in print. Why? Simply because they were white.
He’d do it to you. He’d do it to Putin. Putin would notice. Putin’s our adversary but he’s far from dumb. Trust me on that.

Posted by: midwestlady | August 29, 2008, 3:04 pm 3:04 pm

He knows every bit as much as Mr. Abraham Lincoln did and he carried us through the MOST difficult time of our nation. All people involved, at one time or another have agreed, that there is NO training for POTUS, and NOTHING could prepare you for it, experience-wise, however an even temperament and level headed intelligence (wisdom), are requirements of a good president, and ones that Mccain lacks thoroughly. I believe Obama has those requirements, so would make a better president than Mccain. He would repair our reputation worldwide, and unfortunately worldwide Mccain is consider Bush W. 2. Mccain wants to fight the world, and we dont want to, we are sick of it.

Posted by: JJ | August 29, 2008, 3:04 pm 3:04 pm

OH, now you’re likening Obama to Lincoln. First it’s Kennedy and now it’s Lincoln.
What a joke!

Posted by: midwestlady | August 29, 2008, 3:06 pm 3:06 pm

If this was John McCain throwing a long ball, then Sarah Palin just caught it for a touchdown to win the game!

Posted by: Mike O | August 29, 2008, 3:07 pm 3:07 pm

Lincoln would roll over in his grave if he heard you. He was a great man and he was a Republican, my friend. Don’t soil his name with this kind of manure.

Posted by: midwestlady | August 29, 2008, 3:08 pm 3:08 pm

JJ, you probably can’t soil JFK’s name any more than he did himself, but when you start throwing Lincoln’s name around, you go over the line. Knock it off and learn some history.

Posted by: midwestlady | August 29, 2008, 3:09 pm 3:09 pm

I am speaking of experience, responding to your earlier statement that Obama lacks experience and I was making that comparison so you would see. I am not saying he would be the same as Lincoln, nor would I say he would be the same as Kennedy. He is Obama and he is his own self. Perhaps he may be greater than either of those people, I dont know, only time will tell. Perhaps he is much worse, we cannot fortell the future. I only mentioned the name by way of comparison to experience.

Posted by: JJ | August 29, 2008, 3:12 pm 3:12 pm

McCain does not want to “fight the world”. He needs to defend us from nuts that want to kill us and take over this country. Thats the difference. Please, understand what these other countries stand for and why we need to be on the offense and not let them develop certain type of weapons. If they do not like us…to bad. No one wants to be fighting…. people do not want cancer either….however, you need to do something when confronted with it!! I am scared to death of an Obama presidency for these reasons. National Security…needs to be handled aggresively. McCain gets it. We live in dangerous times.

Posted by: Judy | August 29, 2008, 3:14 pm 3:14 pm

Then why did you bring it up? YOu are the one claiming Obama is like LIncoln, not me.
Obama is his own self, that’s the problem. He is arrogant and doesn’t care about anyone but himself. I’m sick of it. The whole GREEK TEMPLE thing was totally over the top. Anything for adulation.
The MJ video with the Greek Temple went through my mind immediately. I saw the video. That’s who you should be likening him to. He’s a celebrity.

Posted by: midwestlady | August 29, 2008, 3:14 pm 3:14 pm

Midwestperson, I am a historian of Lincoln history. I live in Springfield Illinois and respect Lincoln greatly. This is why I have no problem comparing the two. The comparisons are great actually, in relation to their demeanor and nature, and experience. You only think its an insult because you hate Obama, because you are deluded into believing hes a criminal or something. Douglas said similar things about Lincoln, and questioned his acquaintances, even went so far as to insinuate he was homosexual. Republican tactics today are very similar. And yes I know he was a republican, but you need to realize that Lincoln would not recognize the party today. Lincolns republicans were the common mans party, unlike today when they are the elite corporation party. Fascists! Lincoln would truly roll over in his grave to see the republicans today.

Posted by: JJ | August 29, 2008, 3:19 pm 3:19 pm

Agreed, Judy. The thing all these people who only think about race and underpants miss is that the world is full of people who are really sinister and would love to do things to the USA. Russia & Georgia, Iran, Al Quiada, China, you name it.
We cannot afford to spend 4 years pandering to minorities and quotas and playing intercity bingo. The world isn’t like that anymore.
We also can’t afford to bail all the losers in the world out. There isn’t that much money in the world. They’re going to have to get off their butts at some point. NOw is good time.

Posted by: midwestlady | August 29, 2008, 3:21 pm 3:21 pm

There are women in our office right now so excited that Palin was given this opportunity. Some are crying with happiness! They are very excited to see a woman they can trust represent them unlike the other. I am amazed to see the reactions to this pick today! McCain and Palin ’08.

Posted by: Mark | August 29, 2008, 3:22 pm 3:22 pm

JJ, sure you are. I can tell by your mastery of prose.

Posted by: midwestlady | August 29, 2008, 3:23 pm 3:23 pm

JJ,
JFK would also roll over in his grave if he saw his democratic party today. There has to be some common ground. Remember, United we Stand, Divided we Fall.

Posted by: Judy | August 29, 2008, 3:23 pm 3:23 pm

Judy’s right. The democratic party changed when the rules were rewritten for McGovern. That was when the big change occurred. The democratic party is run by people whose agendas most Americans wouldn’t recognize or sign onto.
I’m not a big fan of Bill Clinton, but I had to hand it to him in 1992 for trying to clean up the Democratic party and bring it back to the middle. Clearly the attempt has failed and it’s reverted to the far-left– and lots of nasty tricks. That’s why Clinton’s been upset. He’s been called a racist and everything else. He’s a jerk but he doesn’t deserve that. He is the ex-President of hte USA.

Posted by: midwestlady | August 29, 2008, 3:30 pm 3:30 pm

Judy, I agree, lets all unite behind the best man for the job, Obama. Mccain has plans for WW3, and we shouldnt even consider him because he is an grouchy old man. Obama/Biden Time!!!

Posted by: JJ | August 29, 2008, 3:32 pm 3:32 pm

The best attack on Obama was his inexperience and McCain pulls this? How do you credibly attack him on this now? Might as well have chosen Lieberman if he wanted to lose…

Posted by: 1percenter | August 29, 2008, 3:39 pm 3:39 pm

Whatever, JJ.
I’ll tell you who’d like to get us into WW3 and that’s Al Quaida. They’re standing in line behind Putin for their chance. And up-and-coming too-many-males-for-their-economy China is right behind them.
If Obama were to get elected, we’d see how the Greek Temple self-proclaimed God of Bull stands up against real trouble. I hope that never happens. I think Obama would crumble totally if Putin didn’t fall to his knees in instant worship. Trust me, that would never happen.

Posted by: midwestlady | August 29, 2008, 3:42 pm 3:42 pm

Hey JJ, maybe you didn’t see the ABC news reporter being handcuffed by the Denver police for taking pictures of the lobbyists that are in bed with the DNC. The RNC is in bed with corporations and the DNC is in bed with unions and corporations. What’s the difference. You know Obama’s story is great, I got to hand that to him. He should have said in the convention to the potential voters to get your lazy butt and work hard and make sacrifices and not to expect for the government to give you a handout and stop having children if you are not going to be responsible.

Posted by: angel | August 29, 2008, 3:54 pm 3:54 pm

I don’t think his story’s so great. He’s a pampered little boy. I doubt that he even paid for his own college education. Frankly, I think I did.

Posted by: midwestlady | August 29, 2008, 4:00 pm 4:00 pm

Republican women were known to cross over and vote for Ferarro even in the 80s. The fact that she was not elected VP has more to do with Mondale. Women Dems will gladly vote Sarah. Not all, but enough to make a dent. Or another crack in that ceiling. Don’t underestimate the desire of women to settle this. I’ve already heard from a new Palin convert who is planning on Hillary in 2012. She is not alone.

Posted by: Tracy Lynn | August 29, 2008, 5:51 pm 5:51 pm

I don’t know why everyone things women are stupid enough to vote for someone just because of their gender. This is total pandering on the part of McCain, but then, I’ve been wary of him for awhile now. I voted for Romney in the primaries and have never trusted McCain. And now I think this pick is probably the worst decision he’s ever made. He might as well hand the presidency to Obama.

Posted by: Theresa | August 29, 2008, 11:56 pm 11:56 pm

Most people on here dont really care about the truth and evidentally havent read Sarah’s accomplishments. She is a Maverick in her on right, She took on big oil, she hired republicans democrats and independants to serve under her,she cut her on salary, decreased property taxes by 60%, took on corruption in her on party, run without any help from the GOP and still won against an incumbent. All of this and she is much more likeable than Hillary.
As for as her being pro-life or pro-choice. I am not sure why that matters. Bush was pro-life and nothing has changed in the last 8 years. This is because Only Congress can write legislation; the President may only recommend it. Anyone that would vote for a candidate based on this one test is short sighted at best.
Just face it. Obama promised many many things that he cannot possible deliver on. There is no way you can reduce taxes and increase spending. That is impossible. In his speech he talked about how government will be there for every person and then a paragraph later talked about how we need to take personal responsibility. Again you cannot have both. His speech was business as usual. Just political rhetoric.
Mccain has bucked the system more than once and she is one tough cookie. Mccain/Palin that is true change not just rhetoric.
