McCain Jokes About House Gaffe on ‘The Tonight Show’

ABC News’ Ron Claiborne and Bret Hovell report: Sen. John McCain’s gaffe last week that he didn’t remember how many houses he owned with his wife Cindy became the source of much of the humor during his appearance on Jay Leno’s "The Tonight Show," Monday evening.

While McCain was still in the green room, Leno got the audience warmed up.

“Tropical Storm Fay has soaked Florida … ruining thousands of homes, most of them belonging to John McCain,” Leno said during his monologue. “In fact, to make Sen. McCain feel at home tonight, I gave him 7 dressing rooms.”

After their opening segment together on the stage, Leno came back from a commercial break to ask McCain, “For $1 million, how many houses do you have?”

McCain answered by first citing his time as a POW in Vietnam.

“Could I just mention to you, Jay, that, at a moment of seriousness,” McCain began, “I spent five-and-a-half years in a prison cell. I didn’t have a house. I didn’t have a kitchen table. I didn’t have a table. I didn’t have a chair. And I didn’t spend those five-and-a-half years because, not because I wanted to get a house when I got out.

“We spend our time in a condominium in Washington, in a condominium in Phoenix, sometime over here in the state of California, and we have a place up in northern Arizona,” McCain continued, explaining how his campaign got to the number four in the count. (McCain is being conservative: ABC News’s count is ten homes on eight properties.)

Leno and McCain also joked about the presumptive Republican nominee’s age –- next Friday, McCain will turn 72.

“It was this week in 1814, British troops set fire to the White House. Did you know that?” Leno said during his monologue. “The White House was saved, it was saved thanks to the actions of one brave young soldier, John McCain.”

McCain was in on the joke: “But also, you forgot to mention when I warned the people about the British coming,” McCain said to laughter.

John McSane that every thing is funny and can not relate to the average American becasue he is very clueless on the econmy issues so he joke about answering real question. This is not funny McShame American people are losing their homes and you have too many houses and can not remember how many

Ok….Now perhaps we all agreed to 1 point you cannot find perfect in a humman being. So all you Libs and all you Repub. please take all that nip picken out away from common sense would you? Why don’t we just count the character of each candidate and if we do that John Mccain wins. Yes John Mccain is right he is a little out of tuoch because when the time Obama claims to be working class John Mccain was in N. Vietnam. It is hard to claim a working class when you’re out there fighting enemies. Give me one thing we can’t respect John Mccain on, his marriage of second wife? is that all we got.

gl,The first thing on McCain’s agenda when he becomes president, is to expand the “no child left behind” so that people will be able to speak and write with proper grammer and improve on comprehensive reading programs so when liberals like you comment on blogs people will be able to understand what you are trying to say.

Let’s talk about McCain’s “family values” and how his current marriage is the result of an affair he had whilst married to his FIRST wife. His current wife, Cindy, says she is an only child, when she actually has a half sister and a half brother. The McCains have no morals. Arg. I am…another republican for Obama.

ABC, what shills. McCain says he has 4 homes when he has at least 8, and they editorialize that McCain is just “being conservative” not that he is “lying” or at least “misinformed” or “misleading”. Heaven forbid that Al Gore or Obama got a basic fact about themselves wrong. You can be sure that would not be characterized as just being “conservative.”

all mccain does is make bad jokes talk about war (vietnam and iraq) and big oil. he is so out of touch with what is really concerning americans. it is the economy stupid. under mccains god king georges rule we have seen the working class become poor why the rich have becoem super rich. OBAMA 08

“…when most American people have lost their only house…”
What nonsense. Some 70% of Americans own their own home. I am one of the ones who worked and saved for a home, buying my first one when I was 21. I moved up three times, and we now own our current home free and clear. That’s the American way. Much better than whining.

Everyone knows he didn’t have a house when he was a POW, he’s using that POW thing again. Thanks John for your service but that was long ago and just admit that you married rich and you are forunate to have many homes. Say something like here’s my plan to help build back our economy so all americans have at least one home. go maverick (yea right, he doesnt care)

s adams—-well yes we need to fund our schools better so our kids get better education but king george cut all funding to americans so he could wage war and give his rich buddies huge tax cuts….and mccain wants to expand on that? man the republican party is so out of touch with what matters, and that is the working class and there suffering under king george.

vegas– i agree with spacerook1, mccain dumped his ex-wife so he could marry a rich woman half his age so he could go into politics with her family money and family influence. sad truely sad, obams is what america is about he was born poor and thru his hardwork he is going to be our next president, now that is character.

Posted by: tom | August 25, 2008, 7:13 pm 7:13 pm

The Obamites are so midguided. Keep believing what you want, but the realist know that no president will want the warmonger legacy of George Bush. McCain will end this war, and God willing bring peace and unity to our country. In case you missed it, McCain and Bush are not friends and McCain has disagreed with Bush more than he has agreed. That is why McCain is having a hard time with the conservative base. This country was doing well under Bush until DNC-Do Nothing Congress took over 2 yrs ago. If you want to blame anyone for our problems, blame Pelosi, whose first order when she became Speaker was to veto every bill Bush tried to pass, even when it was good for the economy. It is their vindictiveness and hate for the Republicans that is hurting our country. Obama’s tax plan will do more harm than good, I guess we will never know though because America will never elect an ultra-liberal, with terrorist friends to the presidency.

McCain is the best person for president because he knows how to pick a fight with other nations of the world and start a war. What does Obama know about starting a war? That’s what its all about man, war and military power. Obama keep talking about strengthening the economy and world peace. Who cares about that! Military power is more important than economic power and most of us Americans are smart and we know that. All this talk about people losing jobs, and jobs being shipped overseas and gas costing $3 a gallon is not true..its a figment of people’s imagination. The Republican party is the best for America..can’t you see how strong the economy is right now? The American dollar is the strongest currency in the world. China and Japan owe us trillions of Dollars..and we are running on a surplus..no deficit.. and most of us Americans are very happy and contented. Why would I want to change from a Republican leadership to Democrat when the country is so prosperous! Why would I want to change that? McCain is brilliant, articulate, strong and does not change his mind(sign of strength). Its military power and war that matters not economic power..I am so glad that most Americans understand that so we can vote McCain into office to continue the prosperity. Vote McCain for continued prosperity and war! Now, can someone pass me my glass of spiked koolaid! Thank you very much! I don’t feel bad because most Americans think like I do and that is why McCain is going to win in November. Vote McCain, feel the pain and don’t complain!

I don’t care how many homes the McCains bought and own with their own money. At least they did not have a criminal/friend/supporter named Rezko who saved the Obama’s $350,000 on his Chicago mansion. This should be considered illegal since Rezko used tax payer money for his illegal activity and support of Obama.

A women with MILLIONS OF DOLLARS in her name!! And she’s not worth a dime!! Why is this not a character flaw? Who dumps a wife that stayed by their side for those FIVE LONG YEARS while they were in that prison in Hanoi? Who could cheat on their wife because he lacked the COURAGE to say he no longer loved her?!
If you think that these are signs of a good leader and his spouse, then you have to be just as morally bankrupt as they are!!

McCain is brilliant and Obama is not! Its as simple as that. The latest poll show that McCain is up by about 5 points. He is the best America has to offer and I’m so proud of John McCain. He will continue the prosperity. McCain is wiser because he’s older..he’s been around for a long, long time and he cares about America..don’t worry the fact that he said he does not know anything about the economy..Its not economic power that matters it military power..I know I am right because most Americans agree with me..and they’ll show it this coming November. McCain care about the poor, Obama does not, McCain care about everyone and Obama does not. So hop on board Hillary supporters and support McCain because he would continue the prosperity..Obama would just make America poor again. I am proud of you Hillary supporters..you are so smart..I believe you are the wisest electorate out there. Let give McCain the vote and make him president! He deserves it! and more importantly, he will continue strong economy that we have. I hope nobody on this blog is mad at me..I am simply saying how most of America feel..I’ll be vindicated in November! McCain 08!

The ‘tortured prisoner of war’ card is every bit as ugly as the ‘race card’.
Why does he play the tortured prisoner of war card? Is that some kind of presidential training I’m unfamiliar with? A presidential proving grounds of sorts?
In the wilds of Darwinland, McCain is the slow old bull, already gone, he just doesn’t know it yet.

hey Bruce Small, that was a different time, yes everyone should work hard to own there home, but I’m sure when your brought your home(s) gas was $3 or $4 a gallon and there wasnt a mortgage crisis and the economy was in a much better state. Most people want to work hard and have the American dream but when people like McCains’ croonies sending jobs to other countries and thinking about there already over-flowing pockets instead of their country.

All this ‘War Hero’s stuff on McCain is lot of bull. Vietnam war was an unnecessary war. Vietnam didn’t attack America. Why Did America wage this war? This war killed far too many innocent people because of egotistic and arrogant Americans like John McCain. I find it disturbing that he is called a war hero. He is a POW and doesn’t make him a hero by any measure. If only Americans had an iota of humanity and decency, tey would stop calling this man a ‘War Hero’ He is nothing but a blood thirsty war monger. I am not sure how many young vietnamese women and children he raped and molested.

You are exactly correct! And he does this because the media and America allows him to do so. There are PLENTY of questions and rebuttal about that time spent as being not so accurate.
Here again is the mixed message the media fails to miss. He doesn’t support GI Bills, benefit upgrades, laws against torture, etc… How many POWs have comeback and own 8-10 homes???? He was a poor pilot who barely made it and was shot down in his limited history of successful flighing. McCain calls Obama a celebrity but yet where was McCain? Again?

DEFENDING AMERICA
BY DAVID H. HACKWORTH
ARE McCAIN’S HANDLERS PLAYING THE WRONG CARD?
John McCain is being hailed by the press as a “genuine war hero.” But is he a war hero in the conventional sense like Audie Murphy and John Glenn? Or is his “war hero” status the creation of a very slick publicity campaign that plays on flag, duty, honor and country?
For sure, McCain has the fruit-salad — a Silver Star, a Legion of Merit for Valor, a Distinguished Flying Cross, three Bronze Stars, two Commendation medals plus two Purple Hearts and a dozen service gongs. On a purely medal count basis, he out-weighs Murphy and Glenn, who both for years repeatedly performed extraordinary deeds on the ground or in the air against an armed enemy.
McCain’s valor awards are based on what happened in 1967, when during his 23d mission over Vietnam, he was shot down, seriously injured, captured and then spent 5 1/2 brutal years as a POW.
In an attempt to find out exactly what the man did to earn these many hero awards, I asked his Senate office three times to provide copies of the narratives for each medal. I’m still waiting. I next went to the Pentagon. Within a week, I received a recap of his medals and many of the narratives that give the details of what he did. None of the awards, less the DFC, were for heroism over the battlefield — where he spent no more than 20 hours. Two Naval officers described the awards as “boilerplate” and “part of an SOP medal package given to repatriated (Vietnam-era) POWs.”
McCain’s Silver Star narrative for the period 27 October 1967 — the day after he was shot down — to 8 December 1968 reads: “His captors… subjected him to extreme mental and physical cruelties in an attempt to obtain military information and false confessions for propaganda purposes. Through his resistance to those brutalities, he contributed significantly towards the eventual abandonment…” of such harsh treatment by the North Vietnamese. Yet in McCain’s own words just four days after being captured, he admits he violated the U.S. Code of Conduct by telling his captors “O.K, I’ll give you military information if you will take me to the hospital.”
A Vietnam vet detractor says, “He received the nation’s third highest award, the Silver Star, for treason. He provided aid and comfort to the enemy!” The rest of his valor awards — issued automatically every year while he was a POW — read much like the Silver Star. More boilerplate often repeating the exact same words. An example: “By his heroic endeavors, exceptional skill, and devotion to duty, he reflected great credit upon himself and upheld the highest traditions of the Naval Service and the United States Armed Forces.”
Yet McCain’s conduct while a POW negates these glowing comments. The facts are that he signed a confession and declared himself a “black criminal who performed deeds of an air pirate.” This statement and other interviews he gave to the Communist press were used as propaganda to fan the flames of the anti-war movement.
Accounts by McCain and other writers tell of the horror he endured: relentlessly beatings, torture, broken limbs. All inflicted during savage interrogations. Yet no other POW was a witness to these accounts. A former POW says “No man witnessed another man during interrogations… We relied on each other to tell the truth when a man was returned to his cell.” The U.S. Navy says two eye-witnesses are required for any award of heroism. But for the valor awards McCain received, there are no eye-witnesses, less himself and his captors. And they’re not talking.
Our POWs in Vietnam were treated appallingly. The Viets would either break a POW or kill him. POWs provided info beyond name, rank and serial number or they didn’t come back.
Based on these stalwart men’s horrific experiences, the Code of Conduct has been changed. A POW says, “Now the training is to give them something… don’t risk permanent damage to health, mind or body.”
McCain refused an early release. An act of valor? Three former POWs told me he was ordered to turn it down by his U.S. POW commander and he “just followed orders.”
McCain certainly doesn’t appear to be a war hero by conventional standards, but rather a tough survivor whose handlers are overplaying the war hero card.

Kanan, hey….hey….hey calm down man what the hell is getting to you man are you mad? Here’s a little medicine for you man first he is a war hero because he served this country first and his life comes second. Second he was ready to take on the duty he was volunteer to do (right or wrong). Third he did not get out of prison in N VN because of Moral and character. Perhaps you liberals don’t find that as a war hero is because you never found a Liberal that have the same values, and if people are not like you then that does not exist.

Did they get to Harvard because they were minorities? Also, all this community work. They were paid!!! Also Barack Obama had a book deal when he left Harvard. He had an advance and a fellowship. He did several months of the writing in Bali. Such a tough life they have had. They are millionaires and out of touch!!

I do not understand how Obama think he can be president of the United States! He’s not even white! That’s the fact..you have to be anglo saxon with an anglo saxon sounding name..Even white ethnic names would not cut with the wise electorate. Let’s admit the truth..cause only the truth will set us free! It was a good run for Obama..some white voters played the little game and voted for him knowing quite well that in November they are going to vote for someone who looks like them..I don’t think that’s racist..that is prejudice and prejudice is not wrong..its natural! I am African American but I believe in telling the truth and being honest..I do not cry racism for every little thing. McCain is going to win in November for one reason and one reason only, he’s white and more white people go to the polls..people of color don’t vote but complain after. That’s the truth!

That is why when it all over said and done he will be our next president. What I don’t understand is why he would go thought all this crap to get it. He doesn’t need it? Could it be he cares about America — NOOOOOOOOOOOO that to easy – he wants to be hated for 4 years by all the democrats that must be the answer.

I’m an “oldster” but still remember many things and many presidents. Most were ok but some were not. Opinion: Washington was the best (Father of our country) and GW Bush the worst so far. If Obama has to learn the job of being president, he should do better than GW Bush who holds the record for screwing up most everything–using policies of the Republican administration. Chances are that a vote for McCain would be a vote for 8 more years of Bush. Nuf sed.

McCain has been cozying up to disaffected Clinton supporters, but I don’t understand their affinity for him.
Where was the love when asked during the Republican Primaries by one his supporters, “How do we beat the b*tch?” Instead of defending Hillary, McCain laughed and said, “But that’s an excellent question.”
The Clinton supporters must have very selecting memories of the slights to her during the campaign.

What? The man is above ALL critism because he was a POW? If that’s the case and that seems to be his only qualification perhapes he should run for President of his local VFW as opposed to President of the United States.

gl, This Stanley happens to be a black man who tells the truth! Don’t be delusional..Obama will not win the elections..do I want him too! Yes! Will he win? No! Because most whites are going to vote for McCain..Is that racist? No!That’s prejudice and we all are..case is point in the just concluded Olympics..I supported all the black athletes from around the world and wanted them to do exceptionally well..does that make me racists! No! Its prejudice and some of us blacks accuse some whites of being racist when they are indeed prejudice and vice versa. Its a natural phenomenon..like some blacks who are supporting Obama simply because he’s black..they don’t know what he stands for but they support him..I have met a lot of those people..That’s prejudice.. Because people like to support people who look like them..The whites who vote in the primary for Obama are not going to vote for him in November. White people go to the polls and vote..most people of color talk and talk and voting day stay home…Then they complain after..remember Kerry and Bush? That is what I mean gl, I am African American but I believe in telling the truth and being honest. Have you seen the polls lately? with the situation the country is in right now Obama should be leading by 20 points! Right! That’s my point.

All McCain says nowadays is “noun, verb, POW”.
There’s much more to President than being a POW.
John McCain does a disservice to all former POWs when he uses it as an excuse for his gaffes. None of these other POWs have used their horrific times to excuse their mistakes. Shame on John McCain.

Posted by: RJ | August 25, 2008, 8:46 pm 8:46 pm

McCain’s answer to everything: a noun, a verb, POW.

I respect John McCain but he does not inspire me and his confidence seemed shaken tonight by the opening of the democratic convention. His campaign is “I am not one of THOSE Republicans”, yes you are… yes you are… This independent just sees the same old tired politics of the Republican Party. John McCain has had 40 years to champion these new goals of America and has failed, end of story. His commentary on the dollar and his energy policy on the Tonight show were incoherent. We need to clear the decks with new leadership and new people.

Posted by: Perspective | August 25, 2008, 8:49 pm 8:49 pm

To John McCain, the fact his economic advisor Phil Gramm helped engineer the housing forclosure crisis while he sits on unused ‘investment properties’ must be a real kneeslapper!

Posted by: kravitz | August 25, 2008, 8:49 pm 8:49 pm

I find it amusing that so many people are quick to find fault with the “rich” calling them out of touch. These are the same people who idolize big-name celebrities — actors, musicians and athletes who are being paid outrageous sums for relatively little effort. Why is no one criticizing them for their success? While there certainly are exceptions (Bono and the Pitts, for example), most of these celebrities do little on behalf of those who are less fortunate. I’m happy that John McCain and his family are able to live the “American Dream”. Isn’t that what we all hope for someday?

He thinks it’s funny that he doesn’t know how many houses he has when he doesn’t care about the average citizen if they even have one.
In my opinion that the media should help the common voter to explore and discuss following attributes of Hon. Senator McCain.
1. Does he have a calm, cool, and collected ” temper ” [ Presidential Temperament ]?
2. Does he have a sound and sustained “Judgment and Caliber”?
3. Does he have a reveal a presidential “Thought-fullness and togetherness” of purpose and positions?
4. Does he involved in any questionable dealings around Washington”?
5. Does he poses sound and detailed :”Vision ” for our Nation?
6. Does he poses foreign policy experience based not just on military but on international relationships with other countries?
7. Does his campaign talk. slogans and are his ads are based on facts and free of lies, distortions, deception, slander and below-the-belt attacks?
If your answer to the above questions is yes then recommend and vote for him.

Political cartoon in our paper yesterday showed Obama telling his press secretary to put out an ad about McCain having seven houses, and to run it in all FIFTY-SEVEN states. As far as I’m concerned, owning more than one house does not make you unfit to be President. I would however, prefer a President who knew how many states there is in his country.

First of all, any reasonable person should credit McCain’s patriotism and heroic service during his 5 years of captivity and torure in North Vietnam. He as well as other POW’s, Iraq War Veterans and other military officials deserve our thanks and gratitude.
But appreciation for service should not, and cannot be the basis for electing a President in 2008. The person’s temperament, judgment, ability to work together with both branches of Congress and forein leaders are the criteria we need to consider in this election. A maverick is an effective legislator who takes a cause, often unpopular, and crusades for it. This is not the place for a President. For those who think Obama supporters don’t appreciate McCain, you’re wrong. We are honored by his service. That doesn’t mean we will support him for the presidency.

Bombing innocent people in a war you don’t belong in doesn’t make for a hero. McCain is no more a hero than the Nazis who served Hitler. There just killers, murderers, the same scum serving in Iraq. I am deeply ashamed of the USA.

McCain – Getting Older by the Minute

Posted by: Mark | August 25, 2008, 9:40 pm 9:40 pm

Matt,
Funny you mention America’s ignorance. Never really occurred to me that the vast majority of our electorate is too stupid to effectively exercise its right to make an informed vote for president let alone town board. Do elaborate…I think you are onto something with this low roads campaign approach.

Posted by: progressiveHoosier | August 25, 2008, 9:41 pm 9:41 pm

I remember Matthews a few weeks ago talking to four pundits about the candidates and he said something to the effect of “God forbid we were to have another terriorist attack on our soil, would that work in McCain’s favor” and both Dems and both Reps said yes, the country would shift to the right.
Say what you will, but I want our country kept safe from our enemies and not led by some mamby pamby citizen of the world. Where does his allegiance lie, Kenya, Indonesia? Too bad he didn’t grow up in our country for his formative years…..it left a detachment in him that is so apparent to me.

GL – you may be the most erudite on this whole blog – articulate, accurate, and level headed….
McCain deserves credit/praise for his vietnam service..but if that’s the only leg to stand on then it’s not enough. On policy he is weak – a shadow of the ‘maverick’ he was in 2000. Obama has faults, but they are largely perceptual thus far..people ‘see’ problems rather than learning his positions….i do hope the debate gets a bit more policy driven, though i’m not optimistic..it doesn’t serve the Rove model.
Also – heard an interesting history of the nomination process – bet most didn’t know that we have Carter and Hamilton Jordan (? not sure on this one) to thank for the current model of primaries..and interestingly several key members of the Clinton campaign committee to thank for the end of the ‘winner take all’ approach….the one that came back to bite her in the end (no pun intended)…

McCain did great. I liked the fact that he is not materialistic and doesn’t care how many homes he owned. obama supporters resort to name calling proves he did great. What the heck the liberal dem have against making money in this country anyway. Loves the fact that he gave his captors a hard time during his captivity, showing them how tough our country is. What’s the f obama ever done? and what the heck is a community organizer?

McCain at McDonalds – My friend, this POW would like an Egg McMuffin.
McCain at Walgreen’s – My friend, my heiress wife will have to pay you later for all these pills. She’s not a POW with medical like me. Well, she can afford them, but she’s used to just taking them and a POW never wants to go against tradition or a c$nt with money.
McCain at Target – My friend, do you carry Rogaine for POW’s?
McCain at Mama Mia – One ticket, my friend. This POW loves ABBA and had to get away from his c$nt of a wife for a couple of hours.
McCain at the zoo – As a POW, I had to come to the gorilla house to see if there were women waiting to be raped by one of these magnificent beasts, my friends.
McCain working with kids – My friends, this POW can’t show you the Czech Republic on a map. I finished near the bottom of my class at the academy. Thank God, my dad was somebody or I would have been screwed. Hell, my friends, I didn’t even know it wasn’t Czechoslovakia anymore. That must have happened when I was a POW. Did I mention, my friends, that I was a POW in Vietnam? Let me tell you about how I won the Vietnam war. I know how to win wars.
Oh, what am I thinking? McCain’s never been to a McDonalds, Walgreen’s, Target, zoo or volunteered with kids. That was Obama.
McCain does love ABBA, though. And calls his wife a c$nt. And will tell you about Vietnam. Endlessly. My friends.

I am so tired of McSame’s pathetic sob story: “I spent five years in a POW camp”.
Enough already – this does NOT QUALIFY YOU TO BE PRESIDENT.
If so, how about electing the thousands of unlawful detainees at Guantanamo Bay!
No John, you spent 5 boring years, with no learning or development, except for dreaming up campaign ads with your ‘commie’ captors drawing crosses in the dirt.
Now there’s a totally suck-up, pandering evangenlical fantasy that really makes me puke!
Seriously, grap a six-pack of Cindi’s beer, hang on the porch on one of your seven homes and chill out.
America will be a much better place without McCain cluttering up the Presidentail race.

I refuse to acknowledge that McCain’s POW experience is a negative. The problem I have is exploiting it. John McCain is a great American and I loved him as the Maverick. However, its time to for him to step aside and let America have the progressive candidate it so desperately needs right now.

Posted by: progressiveHoosier | August 25, 2008, 10:09 pm 10:09 pm

There is no way Obama will be president and here is why….
* He is a foreign policy novice that would put our national security at risk.
* Has radical, left, Hollywood, San Francisco values, not Middle American values.
*His solution is Big Govt-funded by your paychecks. Tax, Tax, Tax!
Examples– Walter Mondale promised to raise taxes, he lost.
McGovern promised weak military weakness, he lost.
Dukakis had liberal domestic agenda, he lost.
All of these candidates had more experience than Obama’s 143 days as Jr. Senator, and they lost.
Obama promises all of these things but is being treated like a celebrity by the media. All the Obama sheep are blind to his positions because he hides them behind “Hope and Change” speeches.

Billy Graham told that cross story in 1976. Supposedly heard it from Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn. Obviously the difference between Solzhenitsyn and himself is as about as important and meaningful to McCain as the difference between Sunni and Shia, whether he’s a maverick or a guy who voted with Bush 90% of the time, the truth and what he remembers….potayto-potahto…(drool)

Posted by: karen | August 25, 2008, 10:19 pm 10:19 pm

Kay,
Get out of here. The conversation had actually moved toward rationalism.
Foreign Policy: Bush had no experience with foreign policy and the right still elected him…twice. Plus, McCain’s experience on foreign policy dates back to the days when Congress still declared wars. Obama proposes a multi-lateral approach that involves collaboration with other developing nations affected by global terrorism. F’ing novice.
Values: Which exactly are you looking at? I am from the midwest and I have no problem with his value system. Protecting working class Americans from being underpaid and denied basic benefits. Oh, you are talking about abortion and gay marriage. Same old, same old.
Taxes: My paycheck? I don’t make more than 200k and I doubt you do either, so I will actually be paying less taxes if he is elected president.
Examples: very biased retelling of political history. How do you explain Clinton’s wins in ’92 and ’96? Let me guess: “He lied, cheated and stole his way into the White House.” Nothing like what GW did in 2000.

Cindy McCain is a real life MAFIA PRINCESS. Her old man, James Hensley, was a mob boss in Arizona. He was also a convicted felon. Go to google if you CONS wish to dispute me. MOB money financed McCain’s early campaigns.

For those of you who think McCain is such a war hero. i challenge you to go to a site called “Vietnam Veterans AGAINST John McCain.” THis site has been up for years. There is much in doubt about McCain’s POW claims.
He also has been very rude over the years to POW-MIA families seeking the truth.

Posted by: progressiveHoosier | August 25, 2008, 10:38 pm 10:38 pm

My peace:
Obama isn’t the perfect candidate, but he represents progress at a time when our global position and domestic situation are both slipping.
McCain was admirable as the Maverick, but his recent shift to the right to garnish “true” conservatives’ votes and money means we can expect more of the same if he is elected.
Whatever you do, be informed and try to use proper English when describing what you think so people take you seriously and don’t misinterpret your ideas.

Well as far as I’m concern he has not yet done jack. He did got a few people to faint at his speeches. Yep no matter how much distance he’s trying to get from Jeromyer wright he is using that type of strategy at his speeches man. I’m sure people are doing them fainting stuff too at his church.

Vegas,
Apparently I don’t have access to the same sort of public education they offer in the fine state of Nevada because I am still having a hard time ciphering through your posts. Nonetheless, I will try to respond…man.
The only thing of substance is your mentioning of Jeremiah Wright and his use of diction to captivate audiences in his church and elsewhere in the black community. I actually agree that Obama exercises the same strategy in winning over young voters. However, I don’t believe Obama’s speeches contain the same central messages as Rev. Wright’s. Can’t recall him blaming his ascention to nominee for president of the USA on the white man or the racist power structure.
I admit your ignorance and absolute obliteration of the English language got under my skin. I guess my standards for discussion are too high for the times we live in…man.

I find it quite funny that we as Americans have audacity to give Congress a 7% approval rating when we seem to argue more than them. At least they are able to do it in a civil manner. Are we really so close minded that we believe we as individuals are all knowing and no one else has any credibility at all. We as a nation could actually start getting things done if we started looking at each other as a source of knowledge, wisdom, and experience we can learn from, instead of someone we must verbally attack and demean.

Dear Sir,
I thoroughly enjoyed reading your responses to these fine Americans. I only have one slight criticism to make and I hope you won’t take offense. I believe the word “Internet” is a proper name and therefore should be capitalized.
I encourage you to keep posting. Your witty replies made my evening.

“Are we really so close minded that we believe we as individuals are all knowing and no one else has any credibility at all.”
Jeremy,
I have to believe your attack was levied against me and feel the need to clarify my berating of Vegas and others on this blog. First of all, I admit that I was verbally attacking and demeaning him, but that it wasn’t unprovoked. Anytime, you post a comment, you leave yourself open to criticism. The making outlandish statements without any regard for the semantics of language and punctuation seems to have became a staple of the current “discussions” regarding politics. Secondly, I do not view myself as the all knowing, all dancing crap of the world. I work in politics where I hear the same garbage of ideas day in and day out. This is my way of getting off my chest what I really think. I think I could learn a lot from an educated person like yourself, just not sure what your proposing Vegas brings to the table.

Hey progressiveHoosier, I just got home from work and responding to your last post man. Perhaps you are a little better than I am in English man but I disagree you of any smarter than anybody though. Just to remind you we all are focussing on what Obama and Mccain stands for and how their campaigns run and what they’er base on not on your opinion of how bad my English is man. If you used your head a little more you might understand what I’m trying to say. Matter of fact let me explain to you what my point is, my point is that even from the get go Obama’s acting campaign begins from people fainting still ignorance people like you thinks he’s god. After that we found out about Jeremaih Wright and it got more rediculous knowing Obama is running his camp. the same way. Oh and by the way keep that good English skills to yourself man that does not make Obama any better.

I was not directing my comments at any one individual. All I am saying is that what I see here is sadly indicative of what I see throughout America. We all want change. I don’t care if you are for Obama or McCain. The only people who don’t want change are that top 1%. What we can’t seem to agree on is what that change needs to be, and we need to understand that we will never get all the change we want. That is the entire basis of a Constitutional Republic. We are not a Democracy for that very reason. To ensure that everyone, even the minority has a say. The sooner we remember that the sooner we can hopefully start looking at the things we can agree on and go from there. We just simply can’t go about it like it’s our way or the highway. I did not mean to come across as offensive or disrespectful. I was simply making a generic observation.

Posted by: Jeremy | August 26, 2008, 12:05 am 12:05 am

Vegas,
Criticism noted and fair.
However, I do reserve the right to disagree with you and your lack of English proficiency makes you an easy target.
Major point of disagreement seems to be that you think Obama is a conman acting his way to the White House and I do not.
I think I might also disagree that I am not smarter than anyone else. Like I said, I am not the all knowing, singing crap of the world, but I have worked hard to fine tune my intellectual thinking. However, I have to admit in the real world, I am much more humble. This is simply my therapy.

Posted by: progressiveHoosier | August 26, 2008, 12:08 am 12:08 am

progressiveHoosier this is my last note to you before going to bed. I think if you are any better than what you are or I should say if we are any better than what we are we wouldn’t sit here slamming at each other, we would properly running for President already and even that we still make mistakes and will still get criticized for. However you might be better than me in English but I speak 3 different languages. I’m not backing down on how I feel for any candidates after all this is about public opinion.

He’s using the POW card because it’s the only card he knows to play. He has several issues he could run on, but the only issue we hear about is the same issue that got G.W.B. elected in 04. Scare tactics work great when used effectively, but against someone like Obama, McCain needs to broaden the issues.

POW – He OW,
“I spent five-and-a-half years in a prison cell. I didn’t have a house.[. . .]. I didn’t have a chair. And I didn’t spend those five-and-a-half years because, not because I wanted to get a house when I got out.
No John, you had one house and one family anxiously awaiting your return . . . unfortunately, upon your return, your wife had suffered a disfiguring injury and you met a hot blond 17-years your junior and between multiple flings, decided that she had more houses, could offer more lucritive options and a jet. Hot dog!
Yeah, you abandoned the other victim of your period as a POW for a more attractive alternative.
I submit that while you were a victim as a POW, your wife at that time was equally a victim. She was a soldier’s wife. She steadfastedly waited for your healthy return with baited breath. She prayed for you and loved you. You screwed her. You are no hero.

Posted by: Gwendolyn J. Shotwell | August 26, 2008, 12:44 am 12:44 am

I think we are on thin ice when we start saying that because someone did something dishonorable, everything they did previousely is therefore dishonorable.
I submit that while McCain is a war hero he certainly is no hero of family values. They were two different actions and I believe they should be judged accordingly.
Multiple presidents have been involved in sex scandals, but how many do most of ever hear about. Why is it that we slam some for their past and ignore others?

Posted by: Danny | August 26, 2008, 12:59 am 12:59 am

“I submit that while McCain is a war hero he certainly is no hero of family values. They were two different actions and I believe they should be judged accordingly.”
Ehh?
War hero v. family values hero . . . the two different values “should be judged accordingly.”
War hero who abandons his POW wife hero should not be judged by his record on family values?
Do you suggest that the wives of soldiers who abandon their husbands in Iraq should not be judged? Serving soldiers will be ever so happy to hear that you have given their wives a “loyalty holiday.”

Posted by: r2d2 | August 26, 2008, 1:09 am 1:09 am

Gwendolyn
If you are one of the millions of Democrats who defended Bill Clinton’s many indiscretions, don’t talk about Senator McCain’s marital record. Millions claimed that Clinton’s private life was none of our business, let’s don’t hold a double standard.
When Senator McCain returned from Vietnam he and his wife were both effectivly disabled. He recovered but they had grown apart by then. He has said publicly that he regretted leaving her.
Surviving five years as a POW would have an unbelievable affect on a man. McCain may not have been the best husband in the world after his return. There is a period of time after coming home that I would overlook a lot of things done by any vet. I have never been a POW or even a combat veteran. I am not qualified to judge them. You probably aren’t either.

Posted by: Oonogil | August 26, 2008, 1:21 am 1:21 am

Jeremy,
To clarify . . . many wives stand by their husbands who serve, as do many men. Those women and men stand by and pray for their loved ones’ safe return. They remain loyal and foresake all others.
They pray . . . write letters . . . raise children . . . do all within their might to bring their loved one home.
Do you suggest that once that loved one arrives home, all bets are off? Having servered honorably, their honor cannot be questioned . . . that they can hump with abandon then hook up with the barn-owner’s daughter in order to buy the farm . . . this farm and that one, this beach house and that one . . . disgracing the POW’s wife who suffered and prayed and raised his children?
Your assumuption that: the two different values “should be judged accordingly” doesn’t quite parallel mine.
Family values, my ass.

I don’t recall McCain ever saying he wasn’t wealth: after all, nearly all senators are rich. I don’t think this is a smart line of attack by Obama – he himself certainly has a lot of areas on which he can be criticized on the wealth issue. This especially gives McCain an opening into the entire Rezko matter.

Oonogil,
I never defended Bill’s behaviour; however, I do believe that the millions spent on his impeachment constituted a major waste of tax payor’s dollars and time. You want to impeach a president, do it over lies of governance, including justice and a war costing billions that was undertaken under false premises.
Before you say McCain’s first wife did not feel that she was abandonded, speak to her. She will set you straight.
McCain is misguided to think that he can toss the POW bomb every time his values are challenged.

Posted by: Gwendolyn | August 26, 2008, 1:55 am 1:55 am

McCain’s “former” economic advisor, Phil Gramm, authored the bill that deregulated banking and led to the current mortgage crisis. He also chaired UBS, a foreign bank that allowed wealthy Americans (aka Cindy McCain)to avoid paying U.S. taxes. (google it) McCain distanced himself from Gramm- the biggest enemy working class American has ever had. Nor all John McCain can talk about is being a POW 100 years ago to get the working class saps to vote in four more years of the rich getting richer. How can anyone earning under $2 million a year even consider McCain?
Also, Ironically, African-Americans gave the greatest sacrifice during the Vietnam war- dying in much larger numbers than their population in American Society.
You would think that after returning from the war, John(Insane)McCain would honor those who gave their all to help him finally earn his freedom by just voting in favor of MLK holiday. Of course, McCain instead distinguished himself as one of the few who voted against honoring this truly great American civil rights leader. MCCain has always been wrong.

I love the fact that half of each party hates their candidate…Clinton supporters hate Obama, hardcore republicans hate McCain. Whoever wins is going to have the majority of the nation against them while the rest of the world laughs at the dumb Americans who can’t agree and are destroying their country from the inside. I am always proud of this country and what it stands for but it’s citizens are extremely embarrassing. When asked if evil existed and what he was going to do about it, he just said flatly, “Defeat it”. Oh really?Uh huh and we have some swamp land… Let’s get real, this guy is so out of touch with America and life in general that he would make such a dumb statement. It’s sad that after the idiot Bush anyone would want a President who wasn’t an intellectual. This guy is just another Bush like dolt with the same policies. Talk about flip flopping, McSame actually votes against bills he introduces and that bear his name. What a fruitcake. Yeah um, no thanks.

Why is it Obama is not experienced enough to be president yet 8 years ago it was acceptable by the right, when questioned with the same thing, that George Bush was capable of surrounding himself with the right people to make the proper decisions. It’s funny how it never works both ways with you people.
Another poster asks what is not to respect about John McCain. What is not to respect is that after being slandered by George Bush’s campaign regarding an illegitimate black child he turned and climbed right in bed with him. Had Bush slandered my family like that I would have punched him in the nose everytime I got close enough to do so but not John McCain. He’ll sell his adopted child and family down the road for power and money. No respect here.

Thank God McCain consistently denies my care. Otherwise, it wouldn’t be like a bank holdup every time I tried to retrieve a check for my benefits. . . everytime someone makes me sane enough to remember, I have a son . . . can’t recall his name, but he’s in college and I have money in the bank . . . with a little afore warning, I can get it. I’m no POW, I have PTSD and it scares the crap out of everyone . . . it’s one of the reasons I live in the woods.
I’m harmless as a hare. If an ole vet like McCain can become president of the US of A, perhaps I can too. I served in Viet Nam, I suffered, I have an acronym to my name, PTSD, I ignore the VA, scary hospitals and all . . . and I’m years younger?!

“well at least McCain got his homes legally.”
Legally should not be confused with ethically. IF McSame was hanging out with Phil Gramm as his economic advisor and Gramm engineered the mortgage crisis which brought great short term profits to home builders and quick investors but long term misery to the middle class and banks, then I doubt McSame was perfectly ethical.
His Republican policies like the “fair tax” school vouchers, and health care stipends, benefit the rich at the expense of the middle class. If McSame gets into office these policies will be legal but they will not be ethical.

It’s little wonder that the world is laughing at America when the best we can bring forward is a choice between Elmer Fudd and Curious George. Some consider the fact that two such shallow individuals could achieve a presidential candidacy to be a hallmark of the proverbial land of opportunity. In reality it is a poor reflection on an even shallower populous.

I would remind Mr. McCain that there are all kinds of homeless and destitute veterans and POWs too. The issue is not whether or not McCain was a POW. The issue is whether the Republican policies which have been so kind to the rich people like McCain have been fair to others too.

This story has nothing to do the with 2008 Presidential campaign other than to suggest he is entitled to the presidency. Not so, Veterans benefits yes, a bed in a Veterans hospital yes, the Oval Office at 1600 Pennsylvania, NO! Apparently, this is the very best McCain has to offer—America deserves greater!

Do middle-class Americans want to elect a leader who is so out of touch due to his own wealth and silver-spoon upbringing that he doesn’t have any idea how many homes he owns? Can this person identify with what’s important to middle-class Americans? Can he provide leadership and solutions to middle-Americans problems when he has never lived through things like a foreclosure, or getting laid off your job after 10 years there, or losing your health care coverage because your employer can no longer afford it, or living paycheck-to-paycheck and not saving a dime because you have to pay so much money for gas and food and electricity? Can someone who has been on the government’s payroll (and who has received excellent health care) for his entire life know what it’s like to NOT have any insurance – like me? The bottom line for me is, I don’t believe Mccain can identify with people like me and most of America’s citizens. He can talk all he wants about how he feels our pain, and what he hears everyday from his constituents, and how his plans will help make our lives better – but he comes from a radically different background and mind-set than me and the world I live in. And I still do not understand how the fact that he was a POW 40 years ago has any bearing on (or relevance to) running the country today. The world of 1968 is long gone and has very little in common with 2008. Yes, we should try and learn from history, but do we have to re-live it every time Mccain can’t come up with an answer to a question?

Posted by: SearamblerOne | August 26, 2008, 5:07 am 5:07 am

Hey, take it easy on McCain, he was a POW. Do you realize that because he was a POW, he was a POW? And if not for being a POW, he became a POW.
Did you know his POWness is top ten on the POW list and that he was a POW? I just hope this noble POW can really POW our economy and POW terrorism because he has the experience of being a POW that was not only a POW but also was a POW.

1). Dems you have to start looking at your congress now. What that means is Pelosi = dead beat obstructionist.
Obama is going to be only a figure head as he will try to surrond himself with everyone who actually HAS any sort of experience. And NO its not camelot 2nd version. The first version of it was enough smoke and guns to choke 4 generations-good luck with the cancer Ted!
McCain is older but has been around and the world has not changed that much to warrant someone in the office that does not have any experience. McCain has the creditials to win this and experience to justify it.
Most people say he is “out of touch” and with these 2 people running, I am not sure they can relate to much of the average anyway you look at it, that being said I am going for the one who has a track record. Finally, if McCain was able to distance himself from Bush he would, he doesn’t agree with everything Bush has done.

Also, McCain is even LESS specific about his policies than you accuse Obama of being (if you want a complete rundown of what Obama’s policies actually are, go to his website. It’s all there). SADAMS…THE NO CHILD LEFT BEHIND ACT IS AN ATROCITY. I have school-age children dealing with the NCLB…they couldn’t begin to tell you the first thing about science or history or geography. You know why? Because their ENTIRE school year is spent CRAMMING for these NCLB “tests” that tests them on their reading, writing and math skills. My kids aren’t learning about the stuff we learned about as kids. They’re not being instilled with a love of learning, it’s not fun for them like it was for us. They’re stressing out in 3rd grade, for crying out loud, because they are being pushed SO HARD to do well on these tests. Third graders shouldn’t have ANY stress…I think it’s a crying shame. If I could afford it in today’s economy, I would stay at home with my children and home-school them. But unfortunately, all of the people who determine everything that determines the prosperity of our country are only selfishly worried about their own pocketbooks. Not mine.

I’m offended by this post. To equate John McCain to any Marine, even Gomer Pyle, is an insult to Marines.

TALK ABOUT ELITIST…………..“We spend our time in a condominium in Washington, in a condominium in Phoenix, sometime over here in the state of California, and we have a place up in northern Arizona,” McCain continued, explaining how his campaign got to the number four in the count. (McCain is being conservative: ABC News’s count is ten homes on eight properties.)

I would love to believe that both McCain and Obama are the best choices we have under the current circumstances. We can all bash as good as we can but when it comes to it we have to pick one. McCain needs to address more and stop talking his same old stories. He’s reminding me of my grandpa. Same story different day. I’ve seen no “Proof” in his words that he believes he’s the right choice. Obama has started to convince me. I want to see them both step it up a notch. It’ll be a good race. Obama has the lead as far as I’m concern. We need to hear something new from McCain. Keep it going Obama.

Dementia is beginnig to set in for McCain. Google “Margaret Thatcher” and see how quickly it descended upon her when she was about the same age as McCain.

Such a worn out argument Tom.
Typical Dem. No originality. Nothing Dem’s do is original. They have to steal every idea they have from someone else…usually Republicans then swear they thought of it first. Go home and smell the shite cakes.

All of you who have made light of McCain’s 5 1/2 years as a POW should be ashamed of yourselves. You have no idea what he went through and my bet is a great majority of you have never served in any capacity of the Armed Forces.
As far as McCain and his wife divorcing when he came back, do some research and find out how many POW’s marriages broke up upon their return. You will find that a large amount of other POWs divorced as well. Put yourself in in their shoes and think about 5 1/2 years of no contact with your spouse! Your spouse continues to live their life as they basically knew it and your in a filthy hole with barely enough to eat and continual beatings could it or would it change how you feel about one another?
I keep reading the same basic post “while average Americans are struggling not to lose their homes.” They are loosing their homes because they made BAD decisions! If a bank offers you a loan where you just pay interest and you sign the deal your an IDIOT! How in Gods name did you think the principal was going to get paid??? If you take a home loan that does not have a fixed interest rate your an IDIOT! You settle into a lifestyle and we all do this, 2 years down the road your interest rate goes up and you cant make the payment cause you don’t have the extra money, its YOUR fault!!! You signed the papers and cant make the payment, why is it the banks fault?
The problem with Americans these days is we just want someone to blame for our own stupidity! Wake up America!

I’m convinced that McCain’s tough 5 years of torture 30+ years ago is actually affecting his mental capacity. He’s not only too old to lead, he’s never won a war although he thinks he has, and don’t be surprised if Alzheimer’s isn’t (unfortunately) on the horizon. John McCain will destroy the United States in a myriad of ways.

I personally beleive we should just take the nonsense thinking out of our head. Why are we still drilling McCain about how many house he’s having? this does not connect to anywhere and is not that he doesn’t know how many houses he owns he just decide not to say anything to the public knowingly how the media is going to blow it out of proportion. Hey Libs lets look at it this way maybe McCain does not know how many houses he have but he sure knows how many states he is running.

The homeless vets don’t have a home, table or chair either. McCain votes against the kind of benefits they deserve, fearing that too many of them will want out of the military to get on with their lives and educations, and to take care of their families. McCain can talk about what happened to him 40 years ago, but there are vets that homeless today and McCain refuses them what they deserve.

Why would the number of houses he owns be an issue? Because he claims to be an ordinary guy running against the grain in the Repub party, but the fact is he is wealthy and privileged and cannot relate to middle-class America. And My’k, with all due respect, the fact that other POWs marriages ended when they returned home is not a valid reason for giving him a free pass. His buddies in the Academy say he was a partier and womanizer then, and when he returned home to his dis-figured wife he started cheating on her with a younger, prettier and richer woman. Yes, he went through hell as a POW. But that is no excuse for cheating on his wife and dumping her. SHE stayed loyal to him, and he dumped her. He is an opportunist, and a cheater, and a liar, and he hasn’t done anything to qualify him to be POTUS. You seem willing to forgive him this trespass yet you slammed the millions of people who have lost or are losing their homes as being irresponsible. Well, I think Mccain has gone way beyond irresponsible…..

Obama has over stirred fried this word “CHANGE” that it’s banal. A Change that he can not even show any while a senator. Change that is full of empty promises.

Posted by: justhtinking | August 26, 2008, 9:33 am 9:33 am

McCain displays every tell-tale sign of a liar, panderer, and manipulator. He clearly uses many of the same sales and pandering tactics they train new call center workers to use before they jump on the phones…tactics that are specifically designed to maintain control of the call while patronizing the customer at the same time. We’re not customer’s, Mr. McCain. We don’t want to buy anymore bullsiht. (intentional misspelling)

Rich…Facts, McCain failed to vote on Senator Jim Webb’s new GI Bill, full-ride scholarship after just 3 year commitments , as he was co-sponsoring his own GI bill, which required a step up reward system approved by the pentagon. It is worth noting that Bush intended to veto Jim Webb’s bill..By saying that McCain is the reason why there are homeless vets on the streets because he disagreed with Webb’s GI Bill is a stretch to say the least…BTW my kid got their Grad Degrees on their own rather than taking advantage of military money, did not want to sign in for a longer committment (free agent if you will)…and yes they are in the military…..AND THEY ARE NOT HOMELESS
The difference between Dem/Repub vs. us Independents is that we READ THE CONTRACTS BEFORE BUYING…

Of course I believe we owe our families a great debt when we return. Having been to Iraq twice I have some experience in this department, but I know the reality is that sometimes it just doesn’t work out after a spouse returns from overseas. While I am certainly not defending McCain’s actions I am saying it is possible to be a war hero and yet make horrible family decisions.
Everyone remembers FDR as a great war time President, but how many blast him for his affair with Lucy Mercer the way we are willing to slam people today without any regard for what people have done in their past.

The answer to the how many homes question for McCain is zero. His wife owns them. Without her father’s money he would have never been elected to Congress. What are he real accomplishments without her father’s money? I’d like to hear what he has done on this own, without her money.

Posted by: Rich | August 26, 2008, 10:12 am 10:12 am

I still fail to see how being a POW means I should vote for McCain.
There were thousands of survivors of death camps of WWII, some of those people might be Presidential material, some not. Being a POW wouldn’t be the determining factor in who I’d vote for.
Right now, I don’t get the sense that the GOP is terribly concerned about what is happening to the middle class. And I certainly don’t feel that no matter how nice a guy McCain is, that he actually understands what it’s like to not have health insurance, to scrape the bottom of the bucket to make house payments, etc.
And quite frankly, I’m not getting the feeling that the McCain supporters on this board are terribly interested in discussing the issues other than to hurl insults.

Posted by: PetraK | August 26, 2008, 10:12 am 10:12 am

I find it quite funny that we as Americans have audacity to give Congress a 7% approval rating when we seem to argue more than them. At least they are able to do it in a civil manner. Are we really so close minded that we believe we as individuals are all knowing and no one else has any credibility at all. We as a nation could actually start getting things done if we started looking at each other as a source of knowledge, wisdom, and experience we can learn from, instead of someone we must verbally attack and demean.

Posted by: Jeremy | August 26, 2008, 10:16 am 10:16 am

I am not directing my comments at any one individual. I do not mean to come across as offensive or disrespectful. I am simply making a generic observation.

Posted by: Jeremy | August 26, 2008, 10:19 am 10:19 am

You assume that I say give him a free pass, I just made a point. You act like you were in the marriage and know all what happened and the fact of the matter is you dont! Its amazing that the divorce was not contested and the woman he left still says she will always love him. Seems like maybe it wasnt as bad as you try to make it!
As to your statement “You seem willing to forgive him this trespass yet you slammed the millions of people who have lost or are losing their homes as being irresponsible.” The FACT of the matter is most have been irresponsible, which has nothing to do with how McCain treated his wife. I have always gone with the approach if it seems to good to be true, it usually is!!!! Why in Gods name these people got into these intrest only loans is beyond me. Did they think that the principle was gonna pay itself? Lets be real!

I remember the time that Catherine, one of my daughter Shannon’s friends when she was little, told me that she wanted to be President one day. Both of her parents are liberal Democrats and were standing there with us – and I asked Catherine, “If you were President what would be the first thing you would do?”
Catherine replied, “I would give houses to all the homeless people.”
“Wow, what a worthy goal you have there, Catherine.” I told her, “You don’t have to wait until you are President to do that, you can come over to my house and clean up all the dog poop in the back yard and I will pay you $5. Then we can go over to the grocery store where the homeless guy hangs out, and you can give him the $5 to use for a new house.”
Catherine, who was about 4, thought that over for a second, while her mom looked at me, and Catherine replied, “Why doesn’t the homeless guy come over and clean up the dog poop and you can pay him the $5.”
Welcome to the Republican Party, Catherine!

my,k—because no republican would ever help a homeless person or hire them. republicans only want the poor and homeless to go away and wont do anything to help them.do you know when you are homeless nobody will hire you, you must have an address to get a job.

Posted by: tom | August 26, 2008, 10:36 am 10:36 am

Tom—-Come on dude be real, your saying that a republican has never helped or hired a homeless person??? I think the truth is they want a homeless or poor person to help themselves. Why is it always about give give give? I think what it should truely be is earn earn earn!
“you know when you are homeless nobody will hire you, you must have an address to get a job.” You are going to sit there and tell me that no homeless person has never gotten a job?? If you want a job my friend you can get one, problem is most would rather take the handouts!
Question for you how come we had all the complaining and whining after Katrina, all the people with their hands out wanting something for nothing? But when the floods in the midwest happened people just pitched in and helped themselves??? You didnt have people on rooftops waiting for help, they walked out thru the water and helped themselves!

“McCain is being conservative: ABC News’s count is ten homes on eight properties.”
He’s only being “conservative” if “conservative” is a synonym for “dishonest”. If you’re got 10 homes and you say you’ve got 4, that’s called A LIE … and hardly the only one McCain tells — he has repeatedly lied about his POW experience, e.g., telling people in Pittsburgh that he gave the VietCong the names of the Pittsburgh Steelers defensive line as his squadron mates, when he wrote in his book that it was the Greenbay Packers offensive line. Did he change the facts to pander to his audience, or did he make the whole thing up, like he seems to have made up his story about the cross in the sand (which he actually read in a book by Solzhenitsyn). The man is a liar and a fraud, a person of very low character who cheated on and then dumped his first wife after she was disfigured in an accident, and calls his second wife a **** in public.

And, truth machine, let’s broaden this discussion. Does McCain even know what the word “conservative” means?
Hint, hint – invading and occupying another country when we don’t have to and we get nothing for the effort is pretty much the exact opposite of conservative.

Posted by: Paul | August 26, 2008, 11:58 am 11:58 am

No, Paul, we didn’t get “nothing” from invading Iraq. We got a half-trillion dollar tab, thousands of US soldiers killed, tens of thousands wounded, hundreds of thousands of Iraqui’s killed and wounded and displaced, and a breeding ground for more terrorists. We also made several companies (like Haliburton and Blackwater) much, much richer…..

McCain would rather start a WAR than loose an election! Listen closely this guy has dementia. He remembers the past clearly but have no idea what happened five minutes ago. He is feeble, senile and angry. Read his autobiography. He clearly states it is all about ambition and he is attempting to flip the strip on Barack.
The US Constitution defines the requirement to be President and not a resume or POW status. Are we Americans or communist? It is incredible how Americans always seems to get duped in voting against their best self-interest.
Stand up America to the best in us and not the worst! Let not marketing and the media arouse your fears, but inspire to our hopes of a nation where ALL are included and respected. We can’t live as an island and fight wars all around the world. We must use diplomacy and voice our concerns without firing shots or dropping bombs.

It is a time that defines part of his life. We should be focusing on how many houses he has but his judgement which to this day remains sound.
