Romney’s Moves Watched Closely

ABC New’s Matt Stuart reports: As reports about Sen. John McCain’s vice presidential selection reach a fever pitch, likely short lister Gov. Mitt Romney is heading to San Diego.

Following a raucous rally in Henderson, Nev., on behalf of the Arizona senator and presumptive Republican nominee, during which there were multiple calls for Romney to get the VP nod, the former Massachusetts governor sped off in a white SUV, flanked by police cars.

Just a day earlier, Romney was in Denver, providing counter programming to the Democrats’ convention just a few blocks away.

Arriving at the terminal in Nevada this evening, Romney told ABC News that he was headed to San Diego, where the wealthy former primary contender owns one of several homes.  When asked if he would stay at his new home in La Jolla, Romney said he couldn’t because the floors were being redone.

Romney spokesman Eric Fehrnstrom earlier said that Romney was headed to California for private meetings and had no public events scheduled.

UPDATE:

Romney was followed to the airport by a grey unmarked Chevy SUV with police lights. Two men wearing suits using ear pieces were in the driver and passenger seats.

They did not appear to follow Romney into the terminal.

Has Romney come under the protection of the Secret Service?

No.

"In Nevada, [Romney] had local police in plainclothes who were nice enough to take him to the airport," writes Fehrnstrom in an e-mail to ABC News.

What? No comment about Bill Clinton saying Obama “hit it out of the park” with his Biden pick? I guess we all know that Bill was oozing with sarcasism.

Romney appears to be a pathalogical liar and just wait for the country to figure out his religion, war avoidance in France and his flip-flop count. He will say anything. He was the opposite of McCain on most issues they discussed.

He has friends that bombed the U.S. Capitol & other government buildings.
That is a fact, not speculation.

Dear Mr. Keeney:
Yet again, the Obama for America campaign has sent a letter to you and your office, demanding now that the Department of Justice prosecute one of the donors to American Issues Project, Inc., (“AIP), a non-profit organization which is presently sponsoring advertisements to which the Obama campaign objects.
As stated in my letter sent in response to the Obama campaign’s first letter, AIP has not violated the law, is not violating the law and is taking every possible precaution to assure that it does not violate the law in the future.
The Obama campaign dislikes the content of AIP’s advertising – but is unable to contradict the facts contained in the ad. That is precisely why the ad is presently being broadcast by numerous television stations. It is accurate, documented, and truthful.
The Obama Campaign has specifically called on the Department of Justice to prosecute a donor to AIP, whose contribution was disclosed publicly in accordance with federal law. See 11 C.F.R. §109.10.
Information contained in AIP’s FEC Form 5, filed on August 19, 2006 was attached to the Obama Campaign’s Second Letter to DOJ and information contained in the filing forms the basis for the Obama Campaign’s latest demands of you and the Department.
The Obama Campaign’s request gives rise to a significant legal and constitutional question: that is, whether the Department of Justice would seriously undertake the prosecution of a citizen under pressure from a prominent government official / political candidate, relying on information contained in truthful and accurate government filing, disclosed in accordance with federal law. There are serious Fifth Amendment self-incrimination issues involved in a situation whereby a criminal prosecution could be ordered at will by political pressure on your Department based solely on a timely and accurate federal government disclosure.
AIP has sought and received the voluntary after-tax contributions of donor(s) to support its policy objectives, which happen to differ from those of the Obama Campaign. Rather than addressing the facts contained in the AIP advertisement, it has instead set about to “deal” with AIP through your Department.
This is, however, only the latest in a series of brazen public statements and efforts by liberal Democratic operatives and agents of the Obama Campaign to silence their critics and organizations with whom they disagree, by initiating what they acknowledge is a concerted national effort announced in recent weeks to intimidate, harass and otherwise bully conservative donors.
An organization calling itself “Accountable America” announced two weeks ago its intent to obtain publicly filed disclosures to attempt to coerce donors to conservative causes to stop making contributions and essentially threatening potential donors into not making contributions to conservative groups. Like the Obama Campaign, this group of operatives is using information obtained from legally mandated public disclosures to identify and target for their attack donors to conservative causes.
Of course, should the Department decide to yield to the pressure from the Obama Campaign and undertake its requested ‘investigations’ of donors to politically related conservative causes, the Department would necessarily be required to do so in an even-handed, non partisan and non-ideological approach. In that regard, the Department would be required to review all donors to all causes and political / policy organizations, whose contributions exceed $5,000 per calendar year to any such causes, the vast majority of which are donors to liberal causes, not conservative ones.
Based on calculations from the Center for Responsive Politics (www.crp.org ) the following are leftwing donors whose substantial contributions to political causes in the last three election cycles have consistently landed each of them on the top donors list and surely each of these donors warrant the Department’s review, scrutiny and prosecution, if the Obama Campaign standard is to be applied evenly:
George Soros:
2004: $23,450,000
2006: $ 3,542,500
2008 (to date) $ 4,650,000
Steven Bing:
2004: $13,852,031
2008 (to date) $ 4,850,000
Peter Lewis:
2004: $22,997,220
2006: $ 1, 624,375
2008 (to date) $ 850,000
Herb and Marion Sandler:
2004: $13, 008, 459
Linda Pritzker:
2004: $3,300,000
2006: $2,101,000
John Hunting:
2006: $1,647,000
2008 (to date) $1,243,000
Alida Messinger
2004: $ 3,580,200
2006: $ 1,042,000
2008 (to date) $ 883,000
Pat Stryker:
2006: $ 1,331,293
2008 (to date): $ 300,000
Jon Stryker:
2006: $ 1,271,313
2008: $ 604,054
The list is quite lengthy and this is but a partial list of those the Department would be obligated to pursue if it bows to the demands of the Obama Campaign to undertake investigations of wealthy donors making large contributions to political causes. The Obama Campaign should be aware that most of the donors on the list are individuals who consistently support left-wing, liberal and Democratic causes. And most of the donors listed above have made public statements regarding their intent to use their wealth to impact the outcome of federal elections should the Department need further evidence of their activities.
The letters from the Obama Campaign to you and your Department are a gross misuse of the power and prestige of that organization. However, because of the environment in which we function, it is important that AIP respond to the ongoing baseless allegations in the letter war now being waged against it by the Obama Campaign.
AIP has violated no provision of law. The donor(s) to AIP have violated no provision of law. However, if the Department of Justice decides to initiate investigations of donors to AIP and other conservative political and policy organizations, as well as the activities of citizens groups such as AIP, we will be prepared to counter such efforts with our list of targets and entities with which we disagree politically and philosophically for the Department to also investigate and prosecute.
Please contact me if you have any questions.
Sincerely,
Cleta Mitchell

Obama campaign committing economic terrorism to shut down free speech?
It’s pretty amazing how far these thugs will go.
The nutroots have began targeting other companies that advertise on the TV networks that ran this ad. I work in IT support/consulting and one of these advertisers is my client. They were “email bombed” by the Obama supporters today in retaliation for advertising on the same network that ran the AIP ad. My client received over 200,000 emails today warning them not to advertise on TV networks that run the ad. My client is a small company without a large network infrastructure and the flood of automated emails nearly shut down their system.
Here’s the letter they received over 100,000 times today until we determined and blocked the originating servers:
From:
[name removed]
[location removed]
Dear Sir or Madam,
Right now, your company is advertising on some of the same TV stations
in Ohio, Pennsylvania, Michigan, and Virginia that are airing a false,
discredited, and potentially illegal political attack ad against Barack
Obama.
I hope you will do the right thing and pull your ads from these
stations.
The American Issues Project ad is full of baseless lies and re-hashed
false assertions. It is designed to play into the worst biases and
fears, contributing nothing of value to the public discourse.
This is not the kind of controversial and destructive ad any responsible
company should want to be associated with.
There is no room on the public airwaves for these kind of lies that
violate the most basic standards of political discourse. CNN and Fox
News have each refused to run such an ad filled with lies, and I hope
you will do the right thing by pulling your ads from stations that air
it.
Thank you.
Due to the sheer volume of identical email originating from a very few mail servers, it’s evident that the intent was not just to send the letter, but to shut down my client’s email system. They nearly succeeded.
This is basically domestic economic terrorism.

jason,
I am with some of the others commenting here, that surely Obamitler has something up his sleeve. He does act like someone who is hiding something big, of which, we will probably never know until he has either gone the way of Gore or has completed his term in office.
We can hope that San Fran Nan Queen of Botox and Harry Desert Lizard Reid will continue their blockage of the comprehensive energy plan. What should be happening is a two pronged approach by running this Ayers ad and an ad attacking both dem leaders.
We can only hope that a filibuster majority in the house and senate does not occur for the dems, because we know how McCain loves to reach across and join them.

More Obama Chicago mob ties
One of the speakers at the DNC on Monday night was Illinois State Treasurer Alexi Giannoulias, whose speaking slot raised a few eyebrows. Not only is he very young and in a low level state office, his family’s business, Chicago-based Broadway Bank, has ties to organized crime.
Just how bad is Giannoulias’s reputation?
Giannoulias is so tainted by reputed mob links that several top Illinois Dems, including the state’s speaker of the House and party chairman, refused to endorse him even after he won the Democratic nomination with Obama’s help.

More on Obama and unrepentant terrorist Ayers connection:
Ayers designed and founded the Annenberg Challenge and Obama was selected to be Chairman of the Board in 1995. Obama and Ayers served on the Woods Fund board together and Obama was a director of the board from 1999 to Dec. 11, 2002.
The Woods fund gave a $40,000 dollar grant to the Arab American Action Network, aka AAAN in 2001 and another $35,000 dollar in 2002. The group’s co-founder Columbia University professor Rashid Khalidi is a strong and vocal crtic of Israel.

As a Las Vegas resident, I can offer one explanation, the police department here has a number of undercover cars. After 15 years in LA, I can assure you that the cops are much more creative here. I have seen foreign cars, trucks, SUV’s pick-up trucks with campers, etc. As such, it is quite possible that it was simply local police who were escorting him to the airport. Of course with his money, it could also be paid security or even the LDS community security.

Amazed by the assuredness many on the Blog think Mitt will bring in the way of ‘Evangelicals” and the bold calls to” bring it on” against Obama regarding his Christian past. There are many doctrines related to the LDS church that are in conflict with mainstream protestants. Blood Atonement, Adam-God Doctrine, Joseph Smith as a prophet and much more.

Well as a 36 year old, white, Republican, Christian woman from Georgia – I can assure you all that we aren’t all racist as many of you seem to think. We also don’t all hate Mormons as many of you seem to think.
Some of us are educated, accepting, concerned Americans. I think Barack Obama seems to be an intelligent, well spoken, moral and ethical man. I’ve been very impressed with him and his beautiful, intelligent wife. However, I disagree with many of his policies. I don’t think that makes me racist or stupid.
I voted for Mitt Romney in the primary because I thought he could do wonders with the economy and the national debt. I would be thrilled to see a McCain/Romney ticket. You’d be interested to know that MANY Christians that I’m friends with also voted for Romney in the primary. None of us cared that he was Mormon. Frankly, I wouldn’t care if he was Baptist, Jewish, Buddhist or whatever. I think we should elect the best man for the job regardless of his religion.
I really just want a President that can get us out of the mess Bush has gotten us in and yes – I voted for Bush. Do I regret that? Yes I do. That doesn’t mean that I’ll vote Democratic just to correct that mistake. McCain isn’t Bush and it isn’t fair to say that he is.
I’m tired of the silly name calling too. To call Republicans “Repuke-licans” and to call McCain “McBush” or “McThuselah” is just immature and it shows an utter lack of intelligence.
By the way, even though I’m a Republican I voted for Bill Clinton twice. I thought he was the best man for the job. If I thought Barack Obama was the best man for the job, I’d vote for him. I don’t think he is right for our country right now because of his policies.

Diane: “Mitt Romney’s house in NH is worth 10 million dollars. It’s on a lake and Mitt actually tried to section off part of the lake in front of his house for himself. That’s illegal…”
Not sure that one is a big deal, though. A rich guy in a big house, who wants to limit access somewhere. Its all stuff I expect. What I don’t expect is a rich guy so removed from reality he doesn’t even know how many houses he owns.
But that aside, if Romney proves to be a bad pick, I think it will because of the flip-flopping and perceptions of lacking authenticity more than anything else.
I don’t think the Mormon aspect will be a big deal. Sure there will be some, and they’ll probably be more vocal than the average Republican voter in their discontent.

No bias there –”where the wealthy former primary contender owns one of several homes.” In the haste to tar Rmney with the “ooh, he’s wealthy” brush, the post dispenses with good English: where he owns one of *his* several homes, is what is meant, presumably, not that he owns one of the several homes that are in San Diego.

More liberal bias from the Obama media. Democrat talking points insist we always mention how many houses Romney has.
One less than John Kerry, aand 3 less than Ted Kennedy.

Funny, in 2002 Romney was pro choice now he’s not. He compliments McCain so well. But is it the McCain of 2000 or the McCain of 2008, I don’t know.

Game over

Forward- and backward-thinking Republicans should resist the temptation to push for safer choices for VP, and to all those who want a shot at it, McCain would be wise to say, “You, sir, are no Mitt Romney.”

Romney is perfect for the job. He is intelligent, experienced and articulate. He has brought positive change to the organizations he has been involved in. He knows the economy and can raise money. He can help win states like Michigan, Colorado and Nevada.

It’s actually a GOOD thing for Romney to go from abortion, (which KILLS a baby) to pro life (which saves the life of the baby) don’t ya think?

Not really Cliff. What do prolifers do when someone has a child that they don’t want, nothing. And sometimes these innocent children are abused because they are unwanted. And there are so many that never get adopted. Why don’t prolifers do anything to help with this. They like to preach but don’t want to take action.

A Biden romney debate would be a repeat of the Benson quayle debate. romney will constantly have the deer-in-the-headlights look. Obama/Biden 2008!!!

So, pt, according to your theory, your people should be encouraging and pushing hard for Romney instead of trying to stop McCain from picking him, Right?

I believe he chose Gov. Huckabee, they get along well and Senator McCain did say he wanted the former Arkansas governor to play a prominent role in his campaign, and he also said he hoped Huckabee would travel with him “not only in Arkansas but around the nation,” in April 2008. Even Tim Russert seemed to think so too when he kept calling Huckabee “vice president Huckabee over and over on Meet the Press on May 18. With that twinkle in his eye, he seemed to be in on a secret that noone else knew!!
Not much focus has been on Gov Huckabee by the media but Senator McCain did mention his name during the faith question’s

You people of hate have never won. America is a country of the free and not the controlled. We were bound for 8 years, lost over 4,000 lives on a war generated by an inconsiderate, selfish, uncaring, manipulative and deceitful president who took advantage of the American people who were at their most vunerable after 911; while they were in mourning and said Sadaam Hussein and Osama Bin Laden are working together and IRAQ has weapons of mass destruction and so lets go to war. It worked and many were killed. Mothers and Fathers, Brothers and Sisters, Sons and daughters. Enough is Enough. OBAMA will be the next president.

I am for McCain/Romney-both well qualified and experienced candidates–I don’t just go for the speech (although I did like Biden). Barack is not even qualified to be the CEO of a small business–noone would hire him with his resume!!

I like liberals, they are good people, unfortunately, they are on the WRONG side of the issues, ie pelosi and the dems going on vacation when the american people want a vote on drilling, obama raising taxes on corporations and repealing the bush tax cuts on middle america, keeping blacks and other minorities in poverty by promoting the ideology of victimhood.
Romney is a sharp contrast to this liberal cycle of dependency, he is a self made man, turned around the olympics, a democratic state (giving them a billion dollar surplus), Bain capital, he knows money, he knows the economy. It’s got to be Romney.
McCain/Romney 08!

Mitt Romney has the experience, strength, innovation, values and leadership America needs.
He will be a great V.P. in ’08 and a great President in 2012.

“…where the wealthy former primary contender owns one of several homes.”
So, are you getting paid by the Obama campaign for deliberately throwing their talking points in; or is this an “in kind” contribution?
Are you paying taxes on this contribution, doing your part to try to get Obama elected?
Aren’t you supposed to have the “this ad was approved by” at the end of your parroting of one campaign’s talking points with no discussion or journalism?
And seriously, how much do you get paid by your currently employer (or your new employer from the Obama Campaign) to deliberately parrot talking points without so much as a nod to the fact that you’ve taken a dump on journalistic integrity, decency, and honesty?

It has to be Romney! Biden was an awful choice…..one minute he is saying Obama is too inexperienced for POTUS and that he would never accept the VP nod from Obama, the next minute he is running on the rockstar’s ticket. Biden is a pandering opportunist.

Mr Coffee, are you decaf or regular. Haven’t you been watching those flip- flop morans from your two faced party. I think you need some more caffine.

McCain leading the way with foreign affairs and Romney working on the economy that’s a win win situation for our country. Plus, they both got a lot of experience, not like someone else we hear about!!

Posted by: Pee Vee, Long Island | August 28, 2008, 1:18 pm 1:18 pm

In my opinion, all of the labeling of Romney as a flip flopper is a bit hypocritical when ones sees that all of the other candidates (both Dems/Repubs) have been waffling dramatically on the own positions in this campaign.
I am OK with a candidate having changed their opinions as long as the candidate can describe to the American people the reason “WHY” they changed their mind (added evidence, persuasive debate, etc). I think that we need a candidate with some intelligence and an ability to consistently weigh the data in light of their current thinking.
My 2 cents…

It’s funny how democrats hate the rich, but without the rich who would pay for all you government funded programs.

Posted by: Ally | August 28, 2008, 2:59 pm 2:59 pm

The way I see it is like this: Dem or Republican…..we all want the same things…..lower gas prices, better economy, national security, etc. Instead of arguing over STUPID things like how many houses a person has or things like that, why dont we focus on the things WE THE PEOPLE want from our leaders and then pick that leader?Every 4 years we hear the same promises from the same types of people and NOTHING ever gets done about it. They’re all the same and the American people get so distracted by the stupid and little differences that we dont pay attention to what the candidates are capable of. Stop arguing, name calling, and all that other crap and lets somehow unite to get what WE THE PEOPLE need!!! Unfortunately I dont like either candidate. Oh and by the way, lets leave the Mormons (LDS) alone. IF you havent actually been to a mormon church service and you havent actually talked with a mormon bishop to ask questions about them than just shut up because you have NO IDEA what you’re talking about. You’re just acting like a puppet and repeating what other people say. Mormons ARE Christians, they treat women with total respect, they are NOT into plural marriage, they dont have and mormon security taking Mitt to the airport and most of all……why does this matter in a presidential race??? Oh and they are NOT a cult!!! They’re just normal, God fearing, Bible reading, Christmas celebrating people. The sad thing is that no one actually takes the time to go see for themselves. But again, it shouldnt matter

You are right, sb,but millions of Christians will vote for Romney. They are called Mormons.

As a politically active member of the LDS church, I am actually pleased with the policy choices that Mitt Romney makes that are contrary to what is generally accepted church beliefs.
It shows that he knows how to balance what he believes to be right and good (to the best of his knowledge) with what is timely and appropriate in current political atmosphere. I can think of no better description of “leader”.
I appreciated geevill’s comments. In contrast, I think the results of the Republican primaries this year, in reference to Romney, proved that the South is generally much more undereducated than anyone knew.
I’d like see Romney on the ticket like alot of people. But I don’t think it is something the nation will be ready for – well, not in my lifetime anyway. (That’s not a compliment.)
