Gibson Interview: Does Sarah Palin Believe Global Warming is Man Made?
ABC’s Jake Tapper reported this morning that in an interview in August, before being nominated to the Republican ticket, Sarah Palin was asked about global warming. This is how she answered: "I’m not one though who would attribute (global warming) to being man-made." In an interview late yesterday Charlie Gibson asked Palin about her view of global warming (watch it). Here is their exchange: Gibson: Let me talk to you a bit about environmental policy because this interfaces with energy policy and you have some significant differences with John McCain. Do you still believe that global warming is not man made? Palin: I believe that man’s activities certainly can be contributing to the issue of global warming, climate change. Here in Alaska the only arctic state in our union of course, we see the effects of climate change more so than any other area with ice pack melting. Regardless though of the reason for climate change whether it’s entirely wholly caused by man’s activities or is part of the cyclical nature of our planet, the warming and the cooling trends, regardless of that, John McCain and I agree that we got to do something about it and we have to make sure that we’re doing all we can to cut back on pollution Gibson: But it’s a critical point as to whether this is man made. He says it is–you have said in the past it’s not Palin: The debate on that even really has evolved into—okay, here’s where we are now. Scientists do show us that there are changes in climate. Things are getting warmer. Now what do we do about it? John McCain and I are going to be working on what we do Gibson: Yes but isn’t it critical as to whether or not it’s manmade? Because what you do about it depends on whether it’s manmade. Palin: That’s why I’m attributing some of man’s activities to potentially causing some of the changes in the climate right now. So as we work towards a cleaner safer environment here in Alaska and elsewhere across our nation and with our allies across our globe–What we’re going to start doing is weaning ourselves off the hydrocarbons and off the petroleum and we’re going to be plugging in those solutions with alternative, renewable energy sources that are cleaner but until that time it’s going to be a transitionary time here until we get to that point—we are going to keep relying on the hydrocarbons and on the petroleums and we have to develop them safely ethically and responsibly Gibson: But I–color me a cynic but I hear a little bit of change in your policy there when you say yes, now you’re beginning to say it is manmade. Sounds to me like you’re adapting your position to Senator McCain’s Palin: I think you are a cynic because show me where I’ve said there’s absolute proof that nothing that man has ever conducted or engaged in has had any effect or no effect on climate change. I have not said that. I have said that my belief is there is a cyclical nature of our planet—warming trends, cooling trends—I’m not going to argue scientists because I believe in science and have such a great respect for what they are telling us. I’m not going to disagree with the point that they make that man’s activities can be attributed to changes.

ugh
think about it…could McCain have found a more ill-qualified potential caniddate for the back up to be leader of the free world?
think about your neighbor next door to where you live…
do you think your neighbor could do the job that this woman could?
when you pick the back up who decides if we go to war or not or decides whether or not to shoot down commercial airlines over NYC, or decides to send us to war with a nuclear nation or not
do you not want the person who is extraordinary in their knowledge and comprehension of the facts of those issues? or has shown their comprehension …somehwere..anywhere…
the worst VP choice we have ever seen in our nation’s history…
all for the same tactics that brought us George Jr.

Ok, Gov. Palin:
Fairbanks Daily News-Miner, December 4, 2007: “I’m not an Al Gore, doom-and-gloom environmentalist blaming the changes in our climate on human activity, but I’m not going to put my head in the sand and pretend there aren’t changes.”
Interview with Newsmax, August 28, 2008: “A changing environment will affect Alaska more than any other state, because of our location. I’m not one though who would attribute it to being man-made.”

I am dissappointed that she calls herself a Christian yet she is willing to lie with so much confidence and self belief.
A true Christian will admit that I was wrong when I said global warming is not man-made but now I do know better…Tell the truth and it will set you free
It is that simple Governor.

Is she selling Amway products on the side?
It’s one thing to be from a small town out in the middle of nowhere. It’s another thing to have never been anywhere else.
She has no clue of the responsibilities involved in the job she’s applying for.
This is McCain’s fault – what a cynical choice he made. McCain obviously thinks Americans are stupid.

By the way, see the new polls, even for the house/senate! Global warming wave to McCain/Palin because they are well liked. As the historians are saying, people vote for the president (top of the ticket), not the veep. They added that McCain’s veep is well liked. Many of the liberal historians are saying it is a mistake to demean Palin and nit and pick her. Didn’t Mr. Clinton get that message through to Barrack. Can you believe he crawled back to Bill for S.O.S. help. Another story. McCain’s only 2 points away from Barrack in blue state Michigan. Lordy, maybe landslide, indeed.

She answered the question perfectly, no matter how many times Gibson tried to re-ask the same question. The left wouldn’t be happy with her response even if she quoted Algore’s fiction novel.

Perhaps ABC and Gibson should be less concerned with Palin’s preparation to be VP, and more concerned with Gibson’s preparation for his interview

Its all over the net it was Charlie gibson that was unprepared for Palin.. Gibson was a rookie compared to her and gibson even fell for a fake twisted AP report on Plains reference to God LMAO. Today on the View, President to be John McCain had the audience standing and applauding and told them how he would lead America. Barbra Walter tried to trick him into answering Left wingnut questions but McCain shut her down.
The top laugh came as Whoopie Goldburg ask John McCain if she was going to be a slave again.. HOW STUPID IS THIS WOMAN.
Latest Gallup Poll: Congressional seats now in play, all within margin of error. Goes on to explain that Democrats are distancing themselves from Obamas failing campaign to keep from losing their own elections.. http:www.drudgereport.com

How does her quote of “What we’re going to do is start weaning ourselves off the hydrocarbons and off the petroleum…” reconcile with chants of “drill baby drill” at the RNC?
Posted by: Max | September 12, 2008, 12:33 pm 12:33 pm
That’s easy, Max. The two aren’t mutually exclusive. We will have to rely on petroleum until that magic green fuel is perfected. McCain/Palin are strong advocates of energy alternatives, but that doesn’t mean our economy should needlessly suffer now.
Posted by: Don | September 12, 2008, 12:36 pm 12:36 pm
Does anyone but me not notice that she gets the really tough questions while the Media does not address any of these types of quesitons with Obama. They don’t address where he came from or what he believes, they just keep poking the same old stuff at us. I would like to hear his response to these same questions to make a decent comparison with.

Sorry – Sarah is not a very literate person. She can’t even make a simple statement in the English language without getting her subjects mixed with her objects. The seems to be playing scrabble with words from her hot topics list. If you would like examples from the article I would be glad to cite them, but if you need my help you likely don’t want to hear anything bad about the Princess either.

Don – I see your point, but to me that’s like a drunk saying “I’m going to quit drinking… right after i have a few more beers”. You’re point is that the economy is suffering right NOW (I agree), don’t the best estimates say that even if we started drilling tomorrow, it would have almost no effect for years to come?
Posted by: Max | September 12, 2008, 12:44 pm 12:44 pm
Gibson talked down to her because she hasn’t a clue. Condescension is a common feature of discussions between smart, knowledgable people and people like Governor Palin who know next to nothing. McCain ought to be ashamed of himself for trying to foist this woman on the American people. As we’ve seen from his recents ads though shame and honor is Old McCain – New McCain is a moral vacuum.

Once again Charlie Gibson has disappointed me. His interview with Palin just proves he and ABC are Bias, not Fair and Not Balanced. No wonder their Ratings Suck.Charlie looking Down on Palin,as to think she is Beneath him…I don’t think so. And isn’t it Ironic that her resume is being compared to Obama, the Presidential Candidate. I have lost what Respect I had for Charlie. And he has lost another viewer.

Don’t blame Charlie if Palin didn’t do well in the interview. The McCain-Palin campaign chose him for the interview, and he was just trying to get straight answers, which he wasn’t getting.
If having to ask questions more than once in order to get an answer appears that he’s talking down to her, then maybe she should answer the question the first time it’s asked. She, especially, would look better that way.

That depends on who you ask, Max. Let’s just look at the situation when Bush lifted the executive ban on drilling: the price immediately fell.
Let’s look at today, hurricane Ike is likely to greatly affect oil rigs and production facilities in the Gulf (20% of our consumption). The price of gas at the pump will go back to $4 a gallon.
If we had a backup, we would much more likely to be able to control prices at the pump.
The bottom line is that we have more petroleum supplies that could be tapped without any affect on the environment. Why not drill? The majority of Americans agree.

Mrs. Phoenix, you are correct that the Democratic Party seeks to uphold women’s values. Ms. Palin, however, is not representative of those issues. With all due respect, she is a representative of the white male establishment that continues to objectify women, does not support equal pay for equal work, does not support women’s reproductive choices. McCain doesn’t even believe that health insurance should pay for birth control, but does believe that health insurance should pay for Viagra. Palin believes that rape victims should pay for their own health examinations. Just because she is a woman doesn’t mean that she is a feminist in the Democratic sense of the word.
Posted by: Bobsan | September 12, 2008, 1:32 pm 1:32 pm
To the independents, please take note of the people defending Palin. They are in no way interested in her qualifications as they are enamored with her. Gibson interview was not as tough as Oreileys interview with Obama this week, and there is a world of difference in the two.
And Russia was unprovoked in their attack?!?!? South Ossetia is NOT Georgia, they are russian citizens that GEORGIA attacked first. She does NOT know the facts.
Posted by: Leo | September 12, 2008, 1:37 pm 1:37 pm
Mrs. Phoenix, nobody is talking about Palin’s being a woman, but people are concerned about her extreem views of the world and lack of experience in national and international affairs. If you take her family as an example you will find that it is a mess: a son who has to go to the army because of he did not go to college, a teenage daughter who is pregnant at 17 and herself a mother who got pregnant after 40 years of age knowing that there is a higher risk of disability among infants born to a woman above 40 years of age. Palin is a real mess. If she can not manage her own family she will not be able to manage the great nation on earth. Period.

One thing that seems to escape the news media on this whole debate about “experience” is the concept of knowledge. That is, even if you are younger than your opponent and maybe haven’t travelled the world, do you have the intellectual curiousity and capacity to undertand the issues at stake in this election and discuss them in an intelligent manner? Palin, who until recently was apparently unfamiliar with government studies on global warming or concepts such as the Bush Doctine, loses big on the knowledge test. Her responses strike me as little more than scripted platitudes delivered with a snide edge. I don’t care if a candidate is a “hockey mom” or someone I’d like to have as a neighbor; I want someone who is knowledgeable, well-educated and smart enough to grasp the issues, even if I don’t necessairly agree with him/her on all of the issues. McCain would have been hard-pressed to pick a less qualified VP. His choice was nothing more than a bone to the conservative base and a pathetic attempt to grab Hillary supporters based on the assumption that women are interchangeable. I have decided to vote for Obama.
Posted by: Lynne | September 12, 2008, 1:43 pm 1:43 pm
McCain obviously waited for Obama to announce his running mate before making a final decision for himself. Had Obama chose Clinton, McCain would not have chose Palin. McCain’s last-minute gaffe is showing its colors.
Posted by: Bobsan | September 12, 2008, 1:48 pm 1:48 pm
McCain had the guts to select a woman as his VP running mate, Obama didn’t. Obie probably figures, with Michelle, Oprah, Streisand all claiming bragging rights, the last thing he needs is Hillary as his VP. So he picked that old woman, Biden!
Posted by: Loubelle | September 12, 2008, 1:56 pm 1:56 pm
McCain and his campaign deserve everything they get for making these claims and releasing these ads about Obama. Gibson and Walters are not showing their credentials as Obama supporters, they’re stepping up as impartial witnesses to McCain’s campaign of lies. McCain and Palin have been lying shamelessly for weeks and quite rightly people are now beginning to come forward and challenge them on what they’ve said. Not for Obama’s sake, but in the service of honesty and truthfulness – remember honesty?
Posted by: Geoff | September 12, 2008, 2:12 pm 2:12 pm
Palin’s backpedaling on global warming is ridiculous. This alone should convince everyone how willing she is to lie. She obviously didn’t believe global warming was “man-made” – she said so. For her to try to say otherwise now is dishonest, calculated, and political. Someone who doesn’t believe humans are responsible for global warming is the same kind of person who tries to have polar bears taken off the endangered species list.

This is the first time that I have ever been angry with Charlie Gibson. It is not that I mind him grilling Gov Palin as if she were some line jumper and it is his role to put her in her place. It is that I have never seen him grill Barak Obama in the same fashion. Just because Barak Obama has been a senator for a year and a half, doesn’t mean he is any more equipped to lead the country than she is. I’d like for just once one of the left wingers to put him on the spot to say exactly how he is ready to “look the American people in the eye” and say that he is ready to lead this great nation. At any rate, it seems to me that ABC will go to any lengths, be it fair and equitable or not, to push the ticket for the party you want to promote. Shame on you Charlie. I had always expected more than that from you and I am a fan for more years than I want to say.

Charlie impressed ole Dan Rather, Brian Williams and Katie Couric with this one. No balance, complete bias and certinally not a journalist. Let’s see, a concensus of viewers felt he was totally bias. The science is in, the debate is over and it is decided that Charlie is a biased pseudo journalist

People need to take off the dark veil and realize that Palin sat there and answered those questions in a robotic fashion..As if she tried as much to anticipate the quesitons..Whenever Charlie cut two or three layers in to her answers, she sounded like a stuck record. it is obvious that she is not well travelled, lives in a bubble, and is still getting schooled on the Mccain policies… My thing is that if you have to protect your candidate from the media, then there is an obvious weakness that you are covering up.. Come on people, if McCain kicks the bucket tomorrow, is this the person that will be our president.. Good looks, and a sharp mouth does not cut it.. Could you imagine her sounding off with other world leaders?
It was a great interview… If she cant handle the fire, get out of the kitchen… All they can do is sound sharp on their ads, but come face to face, and its empty..In closing, why is it that the last time we really saw this woman, was the convention?
People dont be fooled by politics.. Dont underestimate a good PR machine.. thats all it is..

I like her answers much better than Al Gore’s gloom and doom way of looking at the climate issue.

How soon people forget! Charlie “grilled” Obama big-time during the democratic primary debates. Now he asks legitimate, tough questions of Palin and suddenly Gibson is biased? GIVE ME A BREAK! Is she supposed to tossed softball questions because she is a woman? That is an insult to women everywhere. SHE IS RUNNING FOR VP. SHE OUGHT TO BE ABLE TO HANDLE THE SAME QUESTIONS ANY OTHER CANDIDATE WOULD.

I sit back and look as this election unfolds, and its amazing at how the media shapes peoples opinions.. People are not opinionated enough…

Then when the pressure hits, they complain..We do not need mavericks on the world stage for our President.. We need to rebuild our image in the world..

Gibson’s interview with Palin last night was very interesting. Charlie looked like a lion standing over his prey. Yes, he had a look on his face I have never seen before in any interview, ever. He finally though he tricked her about Bush’s doctrine. She didn’t pick up on the formal “Doctrine” he was referring to, so instead of letting it go, he couldn’t resist giving her the “Doctrine” verbatim and letting her know she didn’t know. That was a real one-upper, Charlie. He was definitely there to bring her down and stomp on her and it didn’t happen–Charlie did not look good. He knows that you smile and complement a person you’re interviewing–I didn’t hear him take off on one complement. GRRRRRR–lion-man standing over his prey!!!!!! Extremely happy he showed his colors well.

Obviously his years of experience hasn’t helped him. So, drilling (not interiewing) her was unsuccessful – Sarah wins again.

Not fair and balanced? What did you want him to ask her – what’s your favorite thing about being a politician? Or – would you like a moment to recite your stump speech again? Gibson asked legitimate questions and re-asked them each time Palin failed to answer.
As for Obama not being grilled by the press: I suppose Republicans didn’t follow the Democratic primaries so you don’t realize that Obama’s been interviewed at least a hundred times in the past year. Spend two minutes doing some research and you’ll find that he’s been pounded by the press. The big difference is that he’s knowledgeable enough to handle it.

Compare this interview to the Gibson/Obama interview in 2007 – what a joke!
When are you going to delve into those “tough” questions with Gov. Palin about how she met her husband and the mindless fluff he sprinkled over your messiah.
The “mainstream” media in this country is a sad excuse for free press.
I’d like the answer to a few simple questions:
1)where are the people/friends in Barack’s past coming forward to vouch for him?
2)If he was such a community organizer, what did he do and what were the results?

I was very disappointed in the Gibson interview with Governor Palin. I thought it was apparent that he wanted to look like he was this great interviewer who had a long list of questions that he thought he could make her look inexperienced on.In my opinion it did’nt work she came out of the interview unshaken and really put out better responses than I thought she would. My wife told me she was shocked at how Gibson treated her and will never look at him the same. I thought the questions should be tough but he went overboard on just about all of them. He would’nt accept her answers, which I thought were sufficient. I am comfortable with the McCain/Palin ticket now. How about asking Obama about some of his associations. Do you know with his past associations he would’nt even qualify or make it through a back ground check to be a State policeman here in WV and never qualify to be an FBI agent or secret service employee? Could you think of making him president? Not me. He is the one running for president lets find out about him for a change. As far as I’m concerned it’s over for me I will now vote McCain/Palin. I don’t care what the news media finds about them it’s probably not true anyway.

Obama is the worst President choice we have ever seen in our nation’s history. He is a creation of Move-On/Soros party. He could not even get a security clearance with his associations.
The media had given him a free pass and fully supports him….and the public knows it except for hard-core Dems.

I used to think Charles Gibson was more mature and intelligent and not so programed like the rest of his cronies, but tonight’s interview showed his true colors. He was such a disappointment. He came across as if he was performing for his ilk by acting very pompus and so talking down ,over his specticles, to Sara Palin. The sneer on Charlies face, I have never seen before as though he was God (oh, forbitten word, sorry) looking into the pits of hell. Shame, shame, shame on you Charlie. I have felt Charlie was a decent guy in the past. NO MORE CHARLIE!

I too was disappointed with The Gibson interview. The Democratic kool-aid drinkers must have loved the way he grilled Palin on the issues. It came across as condecending and left leaning, which isn’t really too surprising for the mainstream drive-by media we’re forced to listen to today. I had tremendous respect for Chalie before he did this interview, and doubt if I’ll regain that respect until I see him try to pin Joe Biden to the mat in the same manner. So we have a presidential candidate AND a vice presidential candidate, in opposite parties, both having little or no foriegn policy experience. Hmmm, interesting..and should make for some lively debates in the future if in fact the media would or better yet COULD be objective. Gibson hasn’t shown me anything that could be construed as good journalism here.

I will admit I have not been following this presidential election. I did, however, watch the interview last night, and was annoyed. While I understand the need to ask Palin, a seemingly under-qualified vice-presidential candidate, the “tough” questions, Gibson did so with a condescending and downright insulting demeanor. Does anyone think he would treat Obama this way? I think the fact that Palin is a woman, that Gibson is a Democrat (I think) makes this interview completely biased and hard to take seriously.

I CAME ON LINE TO LEARN WHAT HAPPEN OVERNIGHT TO OUR NEIGHBORS TO THE SOUTH OF TENN. AND MOSTLY WHAT I SEE OR FIND ONLINE IS THE ALASKA BEAUTY QUEEN…HEY WE HAVE SOME REAL ISSUES GOING ON WITH OUR COUNTRY AND THAT SHOULD BE PRIORITY NOT QUEEN PALIN…WHEN IS ENOUGH – ENOUGH….I,M BURNT OUT WITH THIS BEAUTY QUEEN…IT,S TIME TO FACE REALITY AND COVER WHAT,S IMPORTANT….OUR PEOPLE IN THIS COUNTRY AND WHAT,S HAPPENING TO THEM AND WHAT NEEDS TO BE DONE TO HELP THEM…WAKE UP PEOPLE BEFORE ITS TO LATE.

I, for one, think Charlie spent too many years sitting next to Joan Lunden and not enough with Diane Sawyer. I thought his behavior and demeanor with Ms. Pain were both despicable and transparent with regard to his disdain for her. I wish he would bring that bulldog style of questioning to Mr. Obama. I have a whole list of questions that Mr. Obama hasn’t yet answered.

Alex,
No one has even insisted that Obama answer the simplest questions about his past. That’s what’s so disgusting about the whole thing.
OUr news media is as biased as PRAVDA ever was.

PRAVDA was the national newspaper of the SOVIET UNION during its heyday. It’s the last thing I remember that was this biased.
Thank goodness for the internet. I say ignore these liars and go to drudgereport instead.

There are lots of decent alternatives: politico, technorati, etc.
Places where you can hear original and clever first person commentary and discussion of ideas without having to listen to the raving of the crazed maniacs like the MSM employs.
