Palin Interview: Domestic Issues

Here’s the early read on Charlie’s interview in Wasilla today: lots of time spent on economic and social issues — including spirited exchanges about so-called "earmarks" and that dreaded "Bridge To Nowhere" in Alaska. Watch the video.
CHARLES GIBSON:  You have said continually, since he chose you as his vice-presidential nominee, that I said to Congress, thanks but not thanks.  If we’re going to build that bridge, we’ll build it ourselves.

SARAH PALIN:  Right.

CHARLES GIBSON:  But it’s now pretty clearly documented.  You supported that bridge before you opposed it.  You were wearing a t-shirt in the 2006 campaign, showed your support for the bridge to nowhere.

SARAH PALIN:  I was wearing a t-shirt with the zip code of the community that was asking for that bridge.  Not all the people in that community even were asking for a $400 million or $300 million bridge.

CHARLES GIBSON:  But you turned against it after Congress had basically pulled the plug on it; after it became apparent that the state was going to have to pay for it, not the Congress; and after it became a national embarrassment to the state of Alaska.  So do you want to revise and extend your remarks.

SARAH PALIN:  It has always been an embarrassment that abuse of the ear form — earmark process has been accepted in Congress.  And that’s what John McCain has fought.  And that’s what I joined him in fighting.  It’s been an embarrassment, not just Alaska’s projects.  But McCain gives example after example after example.  I mean, every state has their embarrassment.

CHARLES GIBSON:  But you were for it before you were against it.  You were solidly for it for quite some period of time…

SARAH PALIN:  I was…

CHARLES GIBSON:  … until Congress pulled the plug.

SARAH PALIN:  I was for infrastructure being built in the state. And it’s not inappropriate for a mayor or for a governor to request and to work with their Congress and their congressmen, their congresswomen, to plug into the federal budget along with every other state a share of the federal budget for infrastructure.

CHARLES GIBSON:  Right.

SARAH PALIN:  What I supported was the link between a community and its airport.  And we have found that link now.

GIBSON:  The state of Alaska, under OMB figures in 2008, got $155 million in earmarks for a population of 670,000.  That’s $231 per person in Alaska.  The state of Illinois, Obama’s state, got $22 per person.  You got ten times per person as much. How does that square with your reforms?

PALIN:  We have drastically, drastically reduced our earmark request since I came into office.

GIBSON:  But you still have multiple of any other state.

PALIN:  We sure are — and this is what — you go out and you ask any Alaskan this.  This is what I’ve been telling Alaskans for these years that I’ve been in office, is no more.

GIBSON:  Governor, this year, requested $3.2 million for researching the genetics of harbor seals, money to study the mating habits of crabs.  Isn’t that exactly the kind of thing that John McCain is objecting to?

PALIN:  Those requests, through our research divisions and fish and game and our wildlife departments and our universities, those research requests did come through that system, but wanting it to be in the light of day, not behind closed doors, with lobbyists making deals with Congress to stick things in there under the public radar. That’s the abuse that we’re going to stop.  That’s what John McCain has promised over and over for these years and that’s what I’m joining him, also, saying, you’re right, the abuse of earmarks, it’s un-American, it’s undemocratic, and it’s not going to be accepted in a McCain-Palin administration.  Earmark abuse will stop.

To – community organizer,
She didn’t insult community organizers -she slammed Obama for thinking his community organizer days gave him better experience to be a president than her being a mayor of a city/town. If you take off your Obama glasses you will know she is Wright. As mayor, you actually DO have responsibilities that effect the citizens of your town/city. A community organizer does what? Same thing a church leader does – basically isn’t it? Maybe Obama should open his own Mega Church – that is the ONE job he is QUALIFIED for!

Apart from his fly down he is shaking like a leaf is this guy on drugs or medication or something? Does anyone know if he is in the early stages of Parkinson? Palin is doing okay — If you do any kind of research and look back at previous talks Clinton, Reagan, other world leaders gave in their early days they are were a bit sketchy on specifics. Stop nit-picking about her, it’s getting tedious.

These interviews are doing the country a service, although those on the right absolutely have their minds made up all ready. I’ve posted comments on the topic on FOX News’s website, but none have appeared, so I suspect they don’t want to have anyone voicing another view.

the worst show of judgement in the history of Presidential candidates…
the worst person we have ever seen try and fill the role…
all because it is the 9th year of the same tactics that have almost destroyed a nation for power.
more cover ups and more choices for leadership and hiring on something based on something other than most qualified or most knowledgeable of the issues.

You’re waisting your breath, Elaine. He’ll never get it. He’s forced to spin with what he’s got, which isn’t much. Somehow in the mind of a librul, being critical of Obama’s “experience” as a community organizer means you hate community organizers. Sad, but true.

ELAINE, sorry but she most certainly did slam community organizers and actually she could do with a little community organizer experience herself. Maybe it would put her in touch more with us regular folks and help her understand why THIS Hillary supporter is voting for Obama.

At least you realize a choice like that necessitates an apology – to reward the GOP for the last 8 years is rediculous.
You’re basically saying, I’ll be lied to and let you run our nation into the ground. But I’ll still vote for you because I buy into Carl Rove’s political spin.

Great start! Gov Palin was decisive, strong, confident, and has convictions grounded in values! That came across big time! She stands by her faith, is a proud mom, and while she did not say this because Charlie Gibson did not ask the precise question, she flat alluded to the fact that our foreign policy is tied — in part — to energy! (When one looks back over the past five decades, certain decisions would have no doubt been different had we not have been so dependent upon foreign oil — advisors with the Saudi Nation Guard since the late 60′s; military exercises with Mid East countries in the 70′s and 80′s; the first Gulf War; monitoring the ceasefire agreement in Iraq throughout the 90′s and into the 21st Century. Her sheer energy will bring about change — because she is not fearful of shaking up status quo. She did not equivocate — though Gibson tried a number of times to see if she would waffle. She voiced ‘peace first’, but when it came to the defense of the Country, she would not discard force. Would not call that hawkish, but determined. She comes across as having a lot more real world experience than any of the other three candidates — including McCain (a Mom, business woman, TV reporter, politician at various levels, and a bureaucrat overwatching energy resources for Alaska — which is a lot of oil and gas — and a mother of now 5!). Think that an impressive feature of the latter is the fact that she and her husband did it pretty much by themselves in a TOUGH PART OF THE COUNTRY — BEAUTIFUL, BUT TOUGH! Technically, she has a fantastic facility for the English language (no stuttering, no AHHHs or errs, and no equivocation); she fires back a response with conviction and direct eye to eye contact. Liberals will not like her due to her directness, decisiveness and she is independent. Democrats will not like her because she is a real and growing threat to them. Republicans will adore her because she has shaken up the race and caused their poll number to go up. Independents will want to see and hear more. So far, impressed with the lady from the north country!

Charlie Gibson was handpicked by the McCain campaign to conduct these interviews. She has had 2 weeks to prepare, not taking questions from any citizens or members of the press. If you don’t like the questions she’d being asked, it’s not Gibson’s fault. The questions aren’t the problem for Palin, it’s the answers. If she had any idea what she was talking about regarding foreign policy in particular, yesterday’s interview wouldn’t have seemed so confrontational. The problem isn’t the questions, it’s the answers (or non-answers).

You’re taking that particular conversation totally out of context. Of course McCain agrees with Bush most of the time. For that matter, Obama agrees with Pelosi by an even larger percentage margin, and she is a certifiable idiot. If that is your logic process, then I guess you are the fool.
Truth is, McCain has separated himself from Bush on MAJOR issues. Tell me, what exactly has Obama disagreed with his party on the major issues? Doh.

The bar has been so lowered with these folks that a ‘hocky mom’ is now considered qualified to be commander and chief of the largest military in human history.

I think Charlie Gibson is doing a good job with this interview. He is professional and to-the-point and isn’t coddling the candidate, which I was afraid was going to happen in view of all of the claims about media sexism and attacks. As Elizabeth Hasselback said this morning on The View, “Come on, it’s not a date!” and that is true–the goal of these ABC interviews is to get some information about this person who is on the McCain ticket. I finally feel like I can make a more informed choice. Thank you ABC.

Hey Charlie YOU’RE NOT FAIR……..
The media must report the news only and
must stay away for choosing presidents.
The american people fed-up with media.
The american people are smart enough to
select a president and we like to see
the media to STAY AWAY OR TAKING SIDES
to elect a president……
Also the american people vote for a
president with certain values REGARDLESS if they agree OR disagree on
certain issues……

It is rather disturbing that the Republican choice for VP (Govenor Palin) has been scrutinzed more in 2 weeks than Senator Obama has in 6 months. Talk about media bias.
Obama should have picked Hillary and then they would have strolled into the White House. Simply, he (and the media) didn’t want a powerful Woman on the ticket. Now look what they are doing to another strong/capable woman in Sarah Palin. That is just wrong!

I did not see the show last night, but did watch the numerous clips that were shown (so maybe I ended up seeing the whole thing). Everyone (republicans) are complaining that Gibson was condesending or rude to Palin. If he was being rude, he could have jumped on her for not knowing the Bush docterine. Instead, he helped her out and let her answer. In the clips I saw, he did not interrupt her and let her talk all she wanted (often in circles and trying to obscure the fact she was not answering the question). If you want to see rude, try seeing clips of O’Reilly interviewing Obama. He would interrupt Obama if he thought he was moving off topic or to ask another question. There was no slow pitch of the question, wait for the thought process, and then the relaying of the canned response.

Posted by: jerry praszek | September 12, 2008, 5:32 pm 5:32 pm

democrat turned independent, you said that Palin has been scrutinized more in 2 weeks than Obama has in 6 months? Did you miss the extended Democrat primary? Obama has been scrutinized over a longer period of time and has many facets of his life examined. We have less than 2 months to learn about Palin. You should be more worried that in less than 2 weeks a little digging has found that Palin is under investigation for misuse of power, was ordered by a judge in the case that led the reported misuse of power to back off, was actually for the bridge to nowhere prior to it becoming a scandal, and had said the scientists were wrong about man contributing to global warming.
If the republican’s didn’t want a lot of scrutiny of their VP candidate, then they should not have chosen a person no one really knew. The media and Americans generally do not back off if they start to see some questionable things about a person. If anything, it gets them going more. The problem the republicans have is that everything that came out about Obama was run into the ground by the Clinton campaign and does not have the same impact when it is mentioned. That is not true about the things being uncovered about Palin.
Remember, Bush had an approval rating of 88% until the truth started to come out.

You people are so wacked, Charlie wouldn’t dare ask a tough question of “the chosen one”, but you love it when he ask a tough one of a real person. 10 times the money for Alaska than BHO got for his state, means she actually worked for the people of her stated to get more for them…BHO was too busy voting present or running for president…Good for Palin, someone who will look for her electorate.

I was impressed with Palin’s ability to speak clearly and concisely without a lot of ‘er’s', ‘ah’s’ plus other stalls people use when they cannot think of anything to say. Palin is very intelligent, but has little world travel and experience under her belt. She is pro at bluffing her way though an interview without answering the questions presented to her. That reeks of politics as usual we have had for the past 8 years. When hear someone start to avoid the important issues & questions it makes me distrust that person. Isn’t it better to say that you do not know than lie? Integrity is built on truth and honesty. Reciting incorrect & erroneous information in a speech written by someone else can cut you some slack, but this interview was not scripted for Ms Palin. She had to shoot from the hip. I must say that she is very adept at oratory even when she does not know the answer to the question. She can keep the conversation going without hesitancy of having no idea. That is quite a skill to have in politics. Ms Palin also demonstrated her change of position on issues (hasn’t that been called flip-flopping?) mid stream exactly like her running mate, John McCain, does. To me it appears that they both say whatever suits them at the moment to ‘look good’. When a politician starts to flip-flop on the issues that makes me nervous. I’m also nervous when an elected official running for the highest office in the world obviously mixes their religious beliefs with their politics. I wonder IF they have read the U. S. Constitution that states there should be a ‘separation of church and state’ in government. It is the law of our land. But it has been disregarded & dismissed as unimportant for 8 years. Is that to continue with McCain & Palin IF they win the election? Hard to say for sure, but from what I have heard from Ms Palin & Mr. McCain the answer could very well be ‘yes’. That is unacceptable.

Posted by: Wendy Powers | September 12, 2008, 6:26 pm 6:26 pm

I am a little confused. So I have a question for those who were (supposedly) supporting Obama, but now are supporting Palin..err, McCain.
No matter what the spin is, McCain/Palin and Obama/Biden are way apart on the issues. McCain, and especially Palin, are very close to Bush’s positions, whereas Obama is off on the other side.
So my question is, how can Palin change your mind? Palin could deliver a mind-blowing, best speech in the history of the world, but as long as her views are different than mine (and they are), I wouldn’t vote for her ticket just because she “held her own.” So what is it, you fence sitters, that moved you that far from Obama to McCain?

Posted by: rich | September 12, 2008, 6:37 pm 6:37 pm

For the poster above that asked what has the democratic Congress accomplished, the answer is that it would have been a lot, if the republicans would stop their gridlock efforts. For crying out loud, the highway fund almost went dry, when the republicans holding up the funding realized that 300,000 jobs (voters) were at risk, and finally let it go through. Bush and republicans in Congress have purposely locked down lawmaking to make the democrats look like they aren’t doing anything.
The good thing is, very few of the republican crap hasn’t gone through either. Of course, what does that matter, when Bush is just making up the law behind our backs.

charlie said that “70% of the american people favor eliminating semi automatic weapons ” and then asked Palin if she agreed. first of all, i don’t buy that 70% stuff – i’ve never been asked that question nor has anyone i know. second -
Palin gave an outstanding answer – i just wish she had called him on his statement. i guess i’m just one of those bitter people Oboma spoke of, clinging to my guns and religion

Which campain is Palin running for
Didn’t Barack Obama already state that their should be a middle ground on Abortion that all could support
Just goes to show that the McCain Palin camp can’t come up with new ideas and resolutions that now their copying Obama’s plan
Same with the McCain Ad quoting the saying That’s not change it’s more of the same.
Give us a break

I think Charlie is a jerk. I used to like him, but I will never watch ABC news again. I have worked with a lot of women who ran PTA’s etc who could do better both speaking and running our country than Obama so I am voting for John and the hockey mom! I’ll let Charlie vote for Obama along with the other tv stars who have brought disgrace on our country and made us look bad throughout the whole world. Me, a registered democrat, I am ashamed of the liberal left that has left the main stream out of their agenda. Shame on you and Thank God for McCain and Palin!

My days of watching Charlie Gibson are OVER!!! His interview of Sarah Palin was a disgrace! Guess what party he represents? As a result of this interview, I, as an independent am voting Republican!!!

The whole news media are acting like a bunch of predators. And when Obama makes a mistake, they correct him under their breath and help him out because he’s their lover boy, tingles up the leg and all. It’s sickening.

Charles Gibson is a reporter. He asked important and relevant questions of a woman who is running for Vice President of the United States. That is the closet anyone can be to becoming President when anything were to happen to John McCain IF they were to be elected. If she cannot answer these questions – this is nothing compared the even more tough and intense questions she will be asked if and when she is in office! She had better get used to it! She has to be up to the job! This is not the job of Mayor for a small town in Alaska! It is the second highest position in our government! If you have total disgust for Mr. Gibson’s questioning then you have no idea what being in politics involves. His questions were fair and done with class. He did not raise his voice. He did not attack Ms Palin. He was not condescending. He would ask the question again when she did not answer it. That is considered basic communication skills – to get a adequate responses to questions asked. If the question is avoided and never answered he had the right to ask it again and again until it was answered. You are naive if you think this was disgraceful display by Charles Gibson. He is a consummate professional who was fair and did not bully or abuse Ms Palin in his questioning. This is politics – not the PTA! In case you do not know: “The Vice President of the United States is the first person in the presidential line of succession, becoming the new President of the United States upon the death, resignation, or removal of the president, serving out the balance of that presidential term no matter how much or little time remains in it. Every presidential term ends on January 20 of the year immediately after a presidential election. As designated by the Constitution of the United States, the vice president also serves as the President of the Senate, and may break tie votes in that chamber. He or she may be assigned additional duties by the president but, as the Constitution assigns no executive powers to the vice president, in performing such duties he or she acts only as an agent of the president.” -Wikipedia

Gov. Palin is “obviously” not ready for prime time. The real question is “What is it about her ideology (or the lack therof) that ignites the Republican “base”?” It is not about Palin. It is about the low mindedness of “the conservative base” of the Republican Party. John McCain could have picked a 36 year old car wash manager who had been working at the same place since he was 16 with a GED. As long as he was a “conservative” Republican from the “base” they would rally around him.

Posted by: Fred | September 12, 2008, 8:48 pm 8:48 pm

So why didn’t someone ask Biden all these questions? Do we get to see a one hour interview with him next week???

Posted by: midwestlady | September 12, 2008, 9:30 pm 9:30 pm

midwestlady,
The interviewer (Charles Gibson) is not the issue. She can’t handle serious questions about national and world affairs is because she doesn’t anything about them. Not because she is a women, she is just plain unlearned. The notion that the Republicans would place this Sarah Palin one heartbeat away from being the leader of the free world is a “serious threat” to our national security. Wake up people, before it is too late.

Posted by: Fred | September 12, 2008, 10:35 pm 10:35 pm

So, does Charlie Gibson feel like a big guy now? He wouldn’t have the balls to talk to a man the way he spoke to Gov. Palin. He spoke to her like an angry grandpa scolding his grandaughter. The liberal left and the media certainly have a great deal of anger to contend with, now that Gov. Palin is poised to be the next Vice-President of the U.S. How about we see what Joe Biden has up his sleeve as far as economic policy and foreign policy, etc. He’ll sound like a bufoon when he enters the debate with Gov.Palin! Barack Obama needs to do a gut check to see if he has the manhood to go against Palin when the time comes. He certainly doesn’t have the brains or fortitude or the ability to speak extemporaneously! If you want to see real change and save the middle-class, get behind McCain-Palin. If Obama is so concerned about the city of Chicago, why does he have his daughters in a private school ( at $17,000 bucks a year )? Can YOU put your kids in a school like that?

Posted by: chef5 | September 12, 2008, 10:41 pm 10:41 pm

It is clear to me that their are others behind the scene that want to place these impotent & simple people(McCain-Palin) in the White House so that can control and manipulate them (and the American people)from the behind the scenes for economic gain. These people understand you better than you guys understand yourselves,,,,and they are using what they know about you think against you. Wake Up America

Posted by: Fred | September 12, 2008, 10:50 pm 10:50 pm

chef5,
Get serious,,,Palin sounds like she running for SGA in High School. Nobody will feel safe with her in the White House. Come to think of it,,,,nobody will be safe.

Charlie Gibson is suffering from terminal egotism. His interview with Sarah Palin was not only biased, but he came across as smug and arrogant. His condescending manner was insufferable. I’m sure his questions were scripted by the morons at ABC. This was not a “fair and balanced” interview, but a hatchet job that, fortunately, missed the mark. Sarah Palin is a good and honest person – more than I can say for anyone at ABC. You lost a viewer tonight (not that you care).

Posted by: Pat Guevin | September 12, 2008, 11:20 pm 11:20 pm

Somebody call Mitt Romney and ask him if he will agree join the ticket if McCain buys (not taxpayer’s money) Palin a one-way ticket back to Alaska. This will at least stop the rest of the world from the laughing at the United States over this embarassment of a VP pick.

Posted by: Fred | September 12, 2008, 11:24 pm 11:24 pm

Pat G,
Would’nt you like to see Charles Gibson go up against Mitt Romney. Let’s start a petition to get McCain to dump the air-head “Palin” and give Mitt a call.

Posted by: Fred | September 12, 2008, 11:29 pm 11:29 pm

You all make me laugh. I guess its like obamarama. Enjoy the interview etc. She will be our next vp. Suck it up.

Posted by: pintocalle1 | September 12, 2008, 11:37 pm 11:37 pm

i personally think governeor palin didn’t gave straight answers to gibsons questions.shes clearly a novice.
when asked by gisbon ,why does she and mccain persoanlly attack that obama would raise taxes on each and every indudival, when obama says that he’s going to raise taxes only on people who earn $250,000 or more, palin clearly gave a very akward answer. she has clearly no clue in what shes talking about.
when asked about foreign policy, mccain says that alaska is neighbour of russia. may be gibson should ask in what context.
may be not even vladmir putin had visted far east russia.

How many times do we have to endure this interview!!! Obviously you have nothing better to talk about….”enough already”….

Posted by: Sheila Sims | September 12, 2008, 11:58 pm 11:58 pm

I know,,I know…It is hard to watch her implode before your very eyes. I mean it is funny,,but embarassing at the same time. She made us all so proud during the convention. We,,not them,,, “had” Hope for Change. Then she made us look,,you know ,,,stupid. She exposed our small minds, our lack of political sophistication. (but she does look good in those glasses:-)

Posted by: Fred | September 13, 2008, 12:28 am 12:28 am

Palin is quite a good student (parrot). I would like to see her up against a stronger, not so deferential interviewer. Gibson did not follow up when she misspoke or lied on answers.
I worry about many of her positions, some, but not all: not allowing abortion in cases of rape or incest; allowing automotic assault rifles (not needed for hunting); hunting wolves and bear from planes (read up on how this is done); earmarks for “scientific” research (has U of Alaska not heard of National Science Foundation?)and earmarks in general; not teaching birth control in schools (how are we supposed to lower # of abortions?); all of her foreign policy stands (if she has any that are different from Rove I want to know about them)
That’s enough. Are fence sitters just voting for her because she is attractive and a woman – please do some more research and then make up minds.
When do we see her tax returns? If it takes as long to get hers as to get McCains the election will be over.

Posted by: Char | September 13, 2008, 12:40 am 12:40 am

Let’s see…..
As senator, Obama requested nearly $936 million in earmarks, raising his requests each year that he’s been in the Senate.
In the state legislature, 130 times he was unable to make a decision yes or no. He simply voted “present.” (What was he getting a salary for?)
When running against Obama, Sen. Joe Biden said that Obama wasn’t ready to lead the nation. Now he has FLIP FLOPPED and said, he is ready….WHICH IS IT? Maybe Senator Biden will give him on the job training
Speaking of Flip Flopping….
Obama said he was going to take public financing for his campaign, then he didn’t. Obama was against wiretapping, then he voted for it. When speaking to a pro- Israel group, Obama favored an undivided Jerusalem, then the next day he changed his mind. Obama is against something until he hears the “rumblings” that the people are for it, then he decides he’s for it too.
I agree with Rudy G., Joe Biden better have gotten the VP pick in writing.
Let me quote Rudy one more time. “He’s never run a city, never run a state, never run a business. He’s never had to lead people in crisis.”
Pay attention people. We aren’t playing games here. Obama is in it for his own personal gain…..Not for the People of America’s gain!!!

Posted by: Yvonne | September 13, 2008, 1:48 am 1:48 am

Oh, I left out an important point ….Obama didn’t even carry his own state in the Primary, doesn’t that give you a hint as to what THEY think of him.

Posted by: Yvonne | September 13, 2008, 1:59 am 1:59 am

Well, I am not sure what interview some of you were watching, but now that I have seen Part Two I am absolutely sure that this interview was not some kind of assault on poor, little Sarah Palin. No way. And Charles Gibson was not behaving in an out of control, egotistical manner attacking Palin with a ‘hatchet job’ of unfair questions. He was being a professional. And it was quite obvious that Ms Palin respected him and he respected her. If you bothered to really watch them together there was no animosity whatsoever between them. There was no antagonism going on. And, quite frankly to all of you who are so overprotective of little old Sarah Palin . . Sarah can take care of herself quite nicely all by herself! I might not agree with everything she says, but this woman is strong willed and does not fold when asked the hard questions. She may not know the answer to the questions, but you never see her sweat. She’s tough and she is focused. She also has her party ‘handlers’ who have prepped her and trained her and given her a lot of information of do’s and don’t's on the campaign trail. But, if you have done your homework on Ms Palin she does not always follow the status quo. If any of you even care to do some research on any of the people who are in this election you might learn something IF you bother to find the TRUTH about them and not just more here-say, rumor, media spin, outright lies & a plethora of propagandized balderdash! Some of the comments I have been reading from people are frightening in their ignorance. Oh, and by the way – Joe Biden has more on the job experience than any of the others running in this election! He was a lawyer and “became senator in 1973 at the Constitutional minimum age of 30, making him the fifth-youngest senator in U.S. history. He is a long-time member and current chairman of the Foreign Relations Committee and has worked on resolutions concerning the Yugoslav wars and Iraq War. He has served as chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee, dealing with issues related to drug policy, crime prevention, and civil liberties, and led creation of the Violent Crime Control and Law Enforcement Act and Violence Against Women Act.” {Wikipedia). So, for you that had no idea – he has been interviewed by Charles Gibson and many others over the years. Buffoon he is NOT! Here’s a bit more information:
“John Sidney McCain III (born August 29, 1936) is the senior United States Senator from Arizona and presidential nominee of the Republican Party in the 2008 presidential election. McCain graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1958. He became a naval aviator, flying ground-attack aircraft from aircraft carriers. During the Vietnam War, he nearly lost his life in the 1967 USS Forrestal fire. Later that year while on a bombing mission over North Vietnam, he was shot down, badly injured, and captured as a prisoner of war by the North Vietnamese. He was held from 1967 to 1973, experiencing episodes of torture and refusing an out-of-sequence early repatriation offer; his war wounds would leave him with lifelong physical limitations.” {Wikipedia} McCain is from a long line of officers in the military going back to the Civil War and possibly before that. He wanted to be a teacher, but his father told him he was going to U. S. Naval Academy. He’s soft spoken, but he has a temper behind that quiet exterior and has been a rebel in his past not always obeying the rules. He looks like a kindly grandfather, but looks can be deceiving. He is tougher than that. And not but least: “Barack Hussein Obama II; (born August 4, 1961) is the junior United States Senator from Illinois and presidential nominee of the Democratic Party in the 2008 general election. Obama is the first African American to be nominated by a major political party for this office. His acceptance speech was given on August 28, 2008 at the 2008 Democratic National Convention. A graduate of Columbia University and Harvard Law School, where he served as president of the Harvard Law Review, Obama worked as a community organizer and practiced as a civil rights attorney before serving in the Illinois Senate from 1997 to 2004. He taught constitutional law at the University of Chicago Law School from 1992 to 2004. Following an unsuccessful bid for a seat in the U.S. House of Representatives in 2000, he announced his campaign for the U.S. Senate in January 2003. After a primary victory in March 2004, Obama delivered the keynote address at the Democratic National Convention in July 2004. He was elected to the Senate in November 2004 with 70% of the vote. As a member of the Democratic minority in the 109th Congress, he helped create legislation to control conventional weapons and to promote greater public accountability in the use of federal funds. He also made official trips to Eastern Europe, the Middle East, and Africa. During the 110th Congress, he helped create legislation regarding lobbying and electoral fraud, climate change, nuclear terrorism, and care for returned U.S. military personnel. After announcing his presidential campaign in February 2007, Obama emphasized withdrawing American troops from Iraq, energy independence, decreasing the influence of lobbyists, and promoting universal health care as top national priorities.” {Wkpda} His father (who was from Kenya) left the family when Barack was 2 yrs old so he was raised by his WHITE mother & his WHITE grandparents. He is NOT a Muslim. He has more hands on experience working with the poor than any of the other candidates. Now you have had some FACTS about the candidates. Base your opinions of FACTs and TRUTH because that is what having integrity is all about!

Republicans do not read. They like living in their bubble of LIES. How can you vote for someone who make outright lies. I wish ABC or NBC would do some in-depth investigation. Sarah Palin did not put anyone out of office. She squirreled into office because the incumbent governor at the time (Governor Murkowski) was on the fringe of a scandal. There was a Federal probe that had nothing to do with Palin. Read the Alaska Daily News. SARAH PALIN EXAGGERATES HER ACCOMPLISHMENTS AND THE PEOPLE OF ALASKA KNOWS IT.

Posted by: AlaskanWannaB | September 13, 2008, 4:42 am 4:42 am

MCCAIN ADMITTED HIS CAMPAIGN IS RIDDLED WITH LIES. ON THE SAME SHOW, HE TALKS ABOUT HIS INTEGRITY AND MORALS. SOUNDS LIKE ANOTHER BUSH. And, you POOR Republicans plan to vote for 4 more years of the same. DO you READ.

I don’t want McCain to win because he picked Sarah Palin, the idiot. Had he chosen Mitt Romney, I personally would not have cared who was elected. At least Romney was/is a businessman and McCain would have had someone to support him since McCain admitted that he did not have much experience when it came to the economy.

What is new “Independent” thing? You people are Republicans posing as Independents because you are embarrassed by your selection of Bush in 2000 and 2004. So, what…you registered as Independents and you have not gotten any smarter…you still are going to vote for two dummies–Palin and McCain. I personally think some of you just put your heads in a hole. The Republican base appear to be a bunch of idiots who do not research information for themselves. Reading posts on CNN, ABC, CBS…I am amazed at Republicans.

So long and good luck.

Jerry,
Put the blame squarely where it belongs. The bad judgement was not exercised Charlie Gibson, but by McCain for choosing Vice-Presidential Candidate that he did not have properly vetted and who can’t handle serious questions.

You’ll see when they take away his teleprompter during the debates.

Charlie Gibson is not a journalist. He has demonstrated himself to be a liberal pawn on par with Michael Moore. ABC News should change its name to something more appropriate like “MPC” (Marxist Propaganda Channel).
Proof of ABC’s highly unethical and indisputably biased behavior can be seen below. Read the UNEDITED transcript of the communist Charlie interview:

Posted by: Scott | September 15, 2008, 9:36 am 9:36 am

THE BUSH DOCTRINE is a phrase used to describe VARIOUS related foreign policy principles created after Sept ll, 200l. Gov. Palin responded correctly when Charlie Gibson asked her about that doctrine. Charlie’s question was too broad. It was Charlie who could not come up with a specific question. Which policy was he referring to? Gov. Palin asked again to clarify his question. Charlie kept repeating, “The Bush Doctrine; The Bush Doctrine.” Why couldn’t Charlie come up with a specific question about a specific policy?
