Night Two Report Card: RNC’s Palin Problem?

ABC News’ George Stephanopoulos has given his grades for day two of the Republican National Convention.

Palin Pick: Incomplete

Bush Factor: B

Independents Day: B

A Soldier’s Story: A

So what do you think?  Was Governor Palin properly vetted?  Did Lieberman’s speech reach out to independents?  And, even after delivering his speech via satellite, do you think President Bush is a drag on the McCain-Palin ticket?  Give us your thoughts below…

User Comments

Tonight’s speakers were more of the same. A bunch of old, grey haired/balding men talking about what they think is best for this country.
Funny how these same old, grey haired/balding men “knew what was best” back in 2003 when we went in to Iraq.
What a joke. The only thing funnier is that people keep falling for it. You can wrap anything in the flag and people will eat it up.
McCain’s own campaign manager said the election is “not about the issues.” And people are still ready to vote for him?
Pure comedy.

NO SHE WASNT. THEY HAVE TO HAVE BUSH’S AIDES TUTOR HER ON FOREIGN POLICY. SHE HAS PUT HER 17 YEAR UNWED PREGNANT DAUGHTER ON A NATIONAL STAGE FOR ALL TO CRITIZE, THERE ARE 2 ONGOING INVESTIGATIONS ABOUT HER ABUSING POWER OR TAKING MONEY. THIS IS CRAZY. MCCAIN HAS SHOWN HE CAN NOT GOVERN OUR COUNTRY WHEN HE MAKES SUCH IRRATIONAL DECISIONS.

Didn’t the Republicans finally send some Investigators to Alask the Day before Palin was picked ?
After the Election Lieberman’s competely gone from any connection to the Dems. They will no longer need him for a majority.
Palin did more to rally the Christian Right for McCain than even Bush could at this point.

Palin has been vetted, do you think the GOP, who has been doing this for a hundred years and won more elections in the past 50 years than the Dems, don’t know what they’re doing?
Obama, however, has NOT been vetted. I am shocked and dismayed that the MSM has swarmed on Palin like a bunch of hyenas, in a matter of 5 days. Obama has been on his campaign for almost 2 years, with numerous and suspeicious unanswered questiosn about his past, and no one dares ask him.
this is sexism and the race card in the worst way. Who the heck cares about Palin’s husband getting a DUI 24 years ago, but the MSM won’t inquire about Obama’s Ayers associations, which is a million times more relavant? It’s shameful. Especially that witch Campbell Brown on CNN. why won’t she ask the same questions of Obama that she bombarded Tucker Bounds with? What kind of miserable journalism is that?

Well jay, McCain’s campaign manager spilled the beans today…said the election isn’t about the issues. That’s news to me, and probably most other Americans.
These guys are clowns. Seriously. Clowns.

They just announced that Obama, Biden and McCain will each get the Top Secret National Security Briefings required by Law.
Now, FoxNews is saying Obama just got his tonight.
Palin has no Clearances and until she does she is not allowed to get a Briefing. This, they said, could take as much as six weeks or more.
What if the CIA, NSA, FBI, HSA or one of those others Agencies turn something up ?

Posted by: BretC | September 3, 2008, 12:23 am 12:23 am

I think that the announcement of Gov. Palin’s daughter’s pregnancy is appauling and very inappropriate. What type of message are we sending to young teenagers, that if you are pregnant and you plan to get married its okay? And that leads me to question is she only marrying because she is pregnant? This just builds on the every increasing divorce rate; where are our family values? Are we living in a country of morales or not? Republicans need to practice what they preach. Families should come first but not when its wrong.

I guess if Obama passed the high level vetting of the CIA, NSA, FBI, HSA and some of those others Agencies he must not have any major problems in his background.
Apparently FoxNews was hoping for something like that. They all seem very disappointed.

Many of the News Organizations are now reporting that Palin cut funding for Anti-Pregnancy Programs and Homes/Help for un-Wed Mothers one month after her Daughter got Pregnant.
They are posting her Line Item Veto paperwork on-line. *** Gee, they actually have that up there ! Where’s ours ?

Not to mention to remind us of how much we need them to protect us from such a dangerous world. 3,000 died on 9/11. 4,100 died for made-up WMD. 320,000 died since 9/11 due to drunk drivers. 800,000 from lack of health insurance. Remind me again why we must have a militant president? F.

Sarah Palin Supports an Organization and was a Member of an Alaskan Seccessionist group, that wants to Sever TIES with America and Alaska be it’s own Sovereign Nation.
She’s Seen in the Video Congratulating the Organization and on it’s Objectives, as well as Supporting them !!!
Those Alaskans Actually think that because we are Preoccupied with other In State issues, that they are their own !!
Sarah Palin is a Danger, she’s Alaska 1st as Joe Lieberman is Jeruselem 1st and America 2nd !!
————————-
Sarah Palin addressing Alaska Independence Party convention
The words of founder Joe Vogler are proudly displayed on the Alaska Independence Party’s website (at least as of this writing): “I’m an Alaskan, not an American. I’ve got no use for America and her damned institutions.”
Given that one of America’s “damned institutions” is the Department of Defense, this raises a few questions about Gov. Palin’s strength on national security issues.
In covering Sarah Palin’s reported membership in this extremist party (see update), Jake Tapper quotes its current leader as saying that Sarah Palin is “a fine individual. She’s forthright and she puts Alaska first.”
She puts Alaska first. There’s an endorsement to remember.
And in case we think her past association in this party was just some youthful indiscretion, she addressed them by video hookup earlier this year.
In the video shown above Palin says she is “delighted” to be addressing the group, that the party “plays an important role,” and wishes them “good luck on a successful and inspiring convention.”
The Alaska Independence Party wants to open all Federal lands (like state parks) to private ownership – presumably by the people who live nearby. It also wants to abolish all property taxes. It has a few other pretty extreme views, too.

“Country First!!!”
This message should appeal to every American, who thinks that country should come before party.
Obama wants to change America from the world’s only super-power to an equal of lesser nations, like France and Italy.
However, inexperienced Obama is simply not ready to stop Putin from reassembling the Russian Empire or preventing Radical Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons.
Joe Lieberman crossed party lines, because he believes that country comes first.
So should every Democrat and Independent, who believes that what is best for America is far more important than voting for a Far-Left candidate, who shared the social views of Radical Far-Left Pastor Jeremiah Wright for the last 20 years.

Not sure how you missed, but they certainly did look into those issues. And there just isn’t much there. You may as well be ranting about how Obama is a serial criminal because he regularly drives 5 mph over the speed limit. Perhaps you should loosen the tinfoil hat a touch and try, just once, to build your candidate up rather than sling mud and trivial accusations at your opponent. It’s been working for Obama so far (he talks policy – check out all the policy paper details at his website – rather than rehash McCain’s adultry, brush with bribery in the Keating scandal, repeated gaffs about Sunni vs Shia and the basic geography of the Middle East, etc.).

Posted by: jhw539 | September 3, 2008, 1:29 am 1:29 am

I thought it was stuck pigs that squeeled…..Nope stuck elephants do too. I watched some of the balanced coverage on ABC, Fox for the better red than dead coverage, CNN for the blue and CSPAN for a break.
What struck me was remembering the rumors of Obama being a Muslim, attending a terrorist school in the far east. The guy who won’t recite the pledge of allegiance. The attacks on Michelle Obama being in the black panthers, not saluting the flag etc, etc, etc.. (Clinton seemed to get a pass on rumors as did McCain).
Now here comes Gov Palin and one whole day of news some true and some rumor. Obama even comes out and strongly decries family members are “off limits”. GOP pundits tow the party line and ignore the news and real controversy in one droning voice. Pundits refuse to answer the glaring questions about Palin putting her family through this or if she had a Passport before 2007. Palin is limited to one fluffy interview in People mag.
Does anyone else see just a wee bit of a lack of balance here? Or will the GOP get a pass because well they are the GOP after all? How many months did Obama have to thwart his swirling rumors and media questions? Isn’t he still? At least he made himself available to the press and answered the questions himself not through campaign spokespersons…. Lucky for palin and McCain they have Karl Rove to play Sheriff Bing, Bing, Bing,Ricochet Rabbit.

110th Congress
Barack Obama has State, National & International Experience.
In the first month of the newly Democratic-controlled 110th Congress, Obama worked with Russ Feingold (D–WI) to eliminate gifts of travel on corporate jets by lobbyists to members of Congress and require disclosure of bundled campaign contributions under the “Honest Leadership and Open Government Act,” which was signed into law in September 2007.
He joined Chuck Schumer (D-NY) in sponsoring S. 453, a bill to criminalize deceptive practices in federal elections, including fraudulent flyers and automated phone calls, as witnessed in the 2006 midterm elections.
Obama’s energy initiatives scored pluses and minuses with environmentalists, who welcomed his sponsorship with John McCain (R-AZ) of a climate change bill to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by two-thirds by 2050, but were skeptical of his support for a bill promoting liquefied coal production.
Obama also introduced the “Iraq War De-Escalation Act of 2007,” a bill to cap troop levels in Iraq, begin phased redeployment, and remove all combat brigades from Iraq before April 2008.
Later in 2007, Obama sponsored with Kit Bond (R-MO) an amendment to the 2008 Defense Authorization Act adding safeguards for personality disorder military discharges, and calling for a review by the Government Accountability Office following reports that the procedure had been used inappropriately to reduce government costs.
He sponsored the “Iran Sanctions Enabling Act” supporting divestment of state pension funds from Iran’s oil and gas industry, and joined Chuck Hagel (R-NE) in introducing legislation to reduce risks of nuclear terrorism.
A provision from the Obama-Hagel bill was passed by Congress in December 2007 as an amendment to the State-Foreign Operations appropriations bill. Obama also sponsored a Senate amendment to the State Children’s Health Insurance Program (SCHIP) to provide one year of job protection for family members caring for soldiers with combat-related injuries.
After passing both houses of Congress with bipartisan majorities, SCHIP was vetoed by President Bush in early October 2007, a move Obama said “shows a callousness of priorities that is offensive to the ideals we hold as Americans.”

Not much there about Cupcake? ACORN is a large part of BO’s GOTV drive and they have a history of voter fraud going.
BO & Ayers sat on charitable boards such as the Woods Foundation. They directed tens of millions of dollars to groups including ACORN.
Emil Jones Jr. is BO’s mentor. It was Jones that placed BO’s name as a co-sponsor on Illinois laws that others had worked on. In return, Cupcake directed tens of millions of dollars in earmark pet projects to Jones’s district.
You need to do better research!

Alaska National Guard General: “Palin Plays No Role In National Defense Activities Even When They Involve The Alaska National Guard”
ST. PAUL, Minn. — Wait, now, say the Republicans. You think that Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin lacks experience? You think that at 44, with less than two years running the nation’s northernmost state, she doesn’t have what it takes yet to be a heartbeat away from the presidency?
What about the fact that she stood up to embattled Alaska Sen. Ted Stevens?
What about her oversight of her state’s National Guard contingent?
Her experience as a mother? And, hey _ what about the fact that she runs a state that happens to be very close to Russia?
Each of these characteristics has been cited by a Republican since Friday as an ingredient in John McCain’s conclusion that Palin is qualified to become vice president of the United States.
“She has experience not only in politics but in life,” former Republican Sen. Fred Thompson of Tennessee said Sunday on CNN.
None of this suggests that Sarah Palin is not a skilled, competent, multitalented public servant.
But it means that, in the face of fierce Democratic assertions that she is too green to be elevated to vice president, the GOP is looking for whatever it can to show that’s not the case and to bolster her credentials, particularly in national security.
And in some cases, the responses from Republicans who showed up on the Sunday morning talk-show circuit to promote Palin’s qualifications are unexpected, to say the least.
Thompson: “She’s a mother of five children. … And she has more experience than Barack Obama.”

It’s interesting that you mentioned pension funds. BO has a history of directing the Illinois Pension funds to his bundlers.
Rogers is the head of Ariel Capital and one of Obama’s biggest bundlers. Cupcake directed part of the Teacher’s Pension Fund to Ariel. However, that contract was revoked because Ariel underperformed when they managed the funds.
Rezko got a slice of the Illinois Pension Funds too.
BO voted present over 120+times in the Illinois legislature. He has a history of avoiding tough issues.
Iran Sanctions Act – It’s deterrent factor weakened as foreign companies understood how the sanctions could be avoided.
The Iraq War De-escalation act is irrelevant. The surge worked. Read your own writing – remove the troops by April 2008?
The bill to criminalize fraud in elections- BO must turn himself in for the caucus fraud.

NOTE: Maj. Gen. Craig Campbell, adjutant general of the Alaska National Guard, considers Palin “extremely responsive and smart” and says she is in charge when it comes to in-state services, such as emergencies and natural disasters where the National Guard is the first responder.
NOTE: But, in an interview with The Associated Press on Sunday, he said he and Palin play NO ROLE IN NATIONAL DEFENSE ACTIVITIES, even when they involve the Alaska National Guard.
The entire operation is under federal control, and the governor is not briefed on situations.

“No doubt the campaign staff have her hooked up to a fire hose on foreign policy issues,” said Stephen C. Donehoo, managing director of Kissinger McLarty Associates in Washington and a former military intelligence officer.
“No doubt they fear a debate with Joe Biden that touches foreign affairs,” Donehoo said. “My guess is Graham and (Joe) Lieberman are doing a lot of tutoring.”
Republican Sen. Norm Coleman of Minnesota appears to have no such worries, given what he considers to be Obama’s lack of experience.
“The president sets the tone,” Coleman said. “The experience issue is on the other side. The No. 1 guy there is the guy without the experience.”

Well, Fred Thompson gave a very powerful speech. Where was this fiery rhetoric during the primary? He was asleep until the South Carolina Primary. By then, it was too late.
Anyway, even though Thompson gave a goos speech, it was filled with lies, falsehoods and ignorance. The GOP is desperate this year. Obama will win by a bigger margin than the polls indicate.

McCain vetted Palin. A man with a bias interest. A blind date. Here is what is funny, she did not make her statement publicly. It was in the form of a statement.

Sarah Palin is an asset for the ticket.
She’s the first female republican VP

She has a unique personality and attracts independent voters….
After the convention is over we will
see the polls up for the republicans.
Congress has the lowest rate in history

I’m a Hillary supporter voting

I don’t like the Obama ticket….

The public doesn’t vet. If the public did vet Obama, even 17,500,000 of them, they would have the Anneberg files out in the open, exposing his tight relationship with Bill Ayers. They would have known his support of a communist in Kenya – Mr.Odingo. They would have talked to his other professors at U of Ill Chicago Law School – who all can’t stand him. This will all get out soon, and his Rock will sink fast.
The country is center right – we know this because of Bush’s two victories. A slim margin. But the media dissing Palin is going to backfire. The Republicans are energized by her. She cleaned up the corruption in Alaska – and raised five kids. Super woman.
And, McCain is so far more prepared to be commander-in-chief than Obama, who disdains the military.

Why don’t you liberal minded drive-by media people check out Obama and his buddy Biden. Biden’s son and his brother are being indicted on a hedge fund scam but we will never hear about these things and about who Obama really is. You frogs are being slowly boiled in cold water. You think you want change so much that you’re willing to sleep with the devil himself to get it.

McCain: Dude has POOR stage presence
Bush: Poor speech from someone who will go down as the worst President in history.
Palin: Weak Choice. Can’t imagine this woman second step away from the Presidency.
Interesting how McCain campaign is trying to make him out to be the greatest vet of war, but these same bumps tore Gore down for his service.

McCain’s choice of Palin is a calculated move to pander to the religious right while at the same time appearing to be pro woman. It’s ironic that he picks a running mate who would impose her moral agenda on women, and the result of this is considered as potentially repressive by many women. Palin has no foreign policy experience and is severely unqualified for the job. But, McCain chose her because she will attract the far right who are trying to impose the same moral agenda on everyone. Hopefully, people are smart enough to set through this and will choose Obama and Biden who are the only sane choice.

One person said, “I am sooooooooooo tired of hearing about Mc Cain’s POW experience’s.”
Well, I’m sooooooooooooooo tired of hearing the same old rhetoric from the other side and bouncing on Palin for being everyone’s mom.
She’s hounded by the left press for being an unfit mother because her daughter is pregnant. Yet, wasn’t Obama’s mother pregnant with him at about the same age?
McCain isn’t scared about Palin. It’s the Democrats that seem to be scared to death that McCain picked someone with conviction, with EXECUTIVE experience, and yet a woman next door type of person. I would have chosen the Gov. of Hawaii, but now, I believe Palin is a great choice. It’s too bad the left is so afraid of her.

All stories about Palin from the news are the typical family stories. It’s nothing to do with her VP, but the media likes to talk a lot. Why? The media just doesn’t like a woman to be presidential candidate. They did to Hillary. Now they are doing again. Did they tell you Obama smoking story? I do support abortion, but I’ll vote for Republican this time.

Posted by: shen | September 3, 2008, 3:11 am 3:11 am

Sarah Palin is a GREAT choice. Just because the MEDIA didn’t get to officially “vet” her before the announcement, they think that no one else did either. The mainstream media are a bunch of elitist liberals whose vindictive, hateful attacks on Governor Palin and her family are shameful. There are SO many examples of the MSM being two-faced, having a double standard. As others have commented, during this entire campaign, when has ANYONE asked Obama the tough questions? When has anyone made his background or his family the target of hateful, vicious inuendos, questions, and rumors?
The liberal party claims to be The Feminist Party, but as soon as a strong woman comes along who is self-made, who dares to stand up to corruption in politics, and does it all with a family BUT is a conservative, all of the Feminist criteria fly out the window. Why? Because she refused to kill her handicapped baby. And regarding putting her pregnant daughter into the spotlight, SHE didn’t do that: The media did! By accepting the nomination, Sarah was sending her daughter the message that life would go on, and the girl’s mistake would not destroy the entire family or their future.
It is so blatant and shameful that the MSM has lost all touch with what news organizations should do: Report both sides of a story objectively.
Someone sent me an email and told me they saw this in an internet chat room:
Obama raises taxes and kills babies;
Palin raises babies and kills taxes.
Enough said.

The republicans have no chance. At this point, they are just embarrassing themselves. Go ahead, nominate a hockey mom for the second highest office in the land. Go ahead and tell us how qualified she is to lead us. The american people are NOT dumb enough to fall for that line folks.

Posted by: NoToMcCain | September 3, 2008, 3:14 am 3:14 am

Comparing Governor Palin’s EXECUTIVE experience to Senator Obama’s life experience (he has no bonafide executive experience) is like comparing the baby sitter to the baby.
Also – with regard to the mainstream media opening the door on Governor Palin’s children and spouse – if the so-called “leaders” in the Democrat Party don’t strongly condemn this it will come back to haunt them when 20 year old revelations about Mrs. Obama start making headlines. The window on this opportunity is closing fast; better not hesitate.
The Liberal’s are stuck with their poor choice of an inexperienced candidate, and this is obvious with their more experienced Senator Biden pick as VP. If anything, Biden should have been selected as the candidate, but the race-baiters and the mainstream media won the day.
When the Iranians start nuking Israel, and they have stated they WILL wipe Israel off the face of the earth, it is a no brainer – even for you Lib’s – who should be our Commmander In Chief. Unfortunately Barry, you simply can’t stop missiles with strong (when reading from a script) and “articulate” public speaking skills, nor with “hope”.
Good luck with all of that.

C) Say “I have more experience than Barack Obama and it’s God’s will that I become Vice President!”

The Republicans are always ready to call out the moral police on other peoples lives but whenever theirs is question they blame the press for going too far. I will continue to say that John McCaine is no maverick he is a pouting temper tanrum dangereous man who has always allowed his anger to cloud his judgement.
That is what probably got his shot down and captured in the vietnam war in the first place.
After clinching tha Republican nomination months before Obama he had to make a last minute rushed decision to pick someone who has know national or international exposure to the critical issues. This pick is very critical since McCaine would be the oldest president ever in his first term at 72. Less not forget Reagan was older in his second term but sinile also.
The Palin pick is an irresponsible unwise decision of a hotheaded old man.
The last question I would ask is why would Governor Palin put her daughter and family through this at this time when she is dealing with a teenage pregnancy out of wedlock. If she wants to be president or vice president she is young enough to run at some future date.

Even our most experienced politicians have no idea of what is going on in Russia or on Russian borders due to poor knowledge and understanding of its history. The same was true about Middle East: look, where it brought us. We need a President with the best negotiation skills able to understand other nations instead of fighting with them. It is not McCain.

Posted by: Yelena | September 3, 2008, 4:08 am 4:08 am

I’m generally not a person that really follow the political arena, however, since what we Americans of this country have had to endure these past eight years has truly sickened my faith in the whole governmental system.
How can even us Republicans think that by electing John McCain and Sarah Palin as the next leaders of our country is going to change the slightest bit of what we’re going through right now. If McCain has supported Bush in most things these past eight years, and these practices are supported by the Republican party, they why wouldn’t it stand to reason that McCain would continue on with what the party believes in. That doesn’t represent a new change for the better for the people of this country. I haven’t heard anything Obama has mentioned about how he plans to make his changes; but McCain hasn’t told how he plans to make changes either.
As for Palin, I just don’t think she’s had as much experience as Obama and I’m guessing she hasn’t as much experience as Biden as well. When people say “WAKKE UP”, that’s exactly what we as Republicans need to do. Wake up and really do the right thing for a change.
Who cares who runs the country, just let it be the right person to run it and let that someone do what’s right for everyone. We’ve held the reins for eight years; maybe it is time for a REAL CHANGE!
I’m voting OBAMA this time around.

In that tribute to Ronald Regan- they claimed he saved America. Are you kidding Saved America from what? The only thing that America need saving from was Ronald Regan and the republican party’s vision! Ronald Regan was the beginng of the attack on Americas Middle Class. Don’t you remember how he broke the Air Traffic Controllers Union. this
is a man you let thousand if not millions of people die rather admit Aids was becoming an epidemic.
The Republican party is old, tired, corrupt to the core and out of touch with Mainstream Americans. They are a party of extremists. They can’t honestly win elections so they must steal them, starting with Reagan and the Iran-Contra Scandal and the deal made to not have the Hostages released until after Regan won the election. Carter lost (due to this issue of not being able to bring the Hostages home) and Reagan won. On Inauguration Day the hostages were released. Coincidence,I think not! The stealing of elections have been continuous since then with the methods just getting worse. And we all know about the treachery and voter manipulation and fraud that took place in 2000 in Florida and 2004 in Ohio. If you have any doubts Read Witness to a Crime by Richard Hayes Phillips http://web.northnet.org/minstrel/buyitnow.htm
America and maybe the World cannot survive another Republican Presidency. They will either start wars with Iran, Russia or both. So if we don’t blow ourselves up – Climate Change which they don’t believe in will do us in!

One question…If Sarah wanted to stop the rumors that her daughter did not give birth to her son why didnt they just release the medical records rather then announce her daughter was pregnant on the opening day of the convention. To handle it the way they did doesn’t make any scense.

Posted by: jen | September 3, 2008, 6:26 am 6:26 am

Tony – I think most people are savvy enough to realize that Obama is black. I sincerely doubt, despite advances we have made towards a color-blind society, that there are plenty of folks out there who simply won’t vote for a black man. If Obama was white with a name like Bob Jones his numbers would skyrocket. There are the naysayers who dispute this, but it’s true. Obama is wildly popular with more progressive, more open-minded and young people who have not grown up with all the racist crap passed down through the generations. I’m hoping that in these couple of months before the election, more people look more closely at his platform and his policies and the direction he wants to take the country, all of which are far saner, far superior to those of McCain. My feeling is that Obama will be absolutely wonderful as president and will do good things for the people of this country, and McCain will be a disaster. People need to examine McCain’s plans for Health Care, Social Security, a woman’s right to choose, public education, reinstatement of a military draft, and the separation of church and state which seems to be dangerously close to annihilation in a McCain presidency. His pick of Palin as vp is almost guaranteed to inject religion into the public domain whether we want it or not. And, although I’m staying out of the “mommy wars” (she has the perfect right to do as she pleases in regards to a work/children situation), I absolutly shudder at the thought of her being in charge if something were to happen to McCain. This was not a good choice.

Posted by: 59 year old white woman | September 3, 2008, 6:38 am 6:38 am

Ok, first of all, my grades -
Bush factor – D (But was always going to be a low point for McCain)
Indies- A (I think overall, although a lot of people won’t have learnt a lot new, the right strings were played.)
Soliders Story B (Personally I am marking this down a tick for a few reasons- I resent the implicit backstory that only GOPers can be patriotic, and that patriotism is only served by military service, but also I thought it was overplayed, if we are talking McCain the maverick, why not spend longe explaining how Maverick McCain has improved the lives of everyday Americans?)
Palin Pick- C for now (Could go either way though up or down) Much is reliant on her convention speech, which I am sure will rally the base, but may begin to disprove her claim to be a representative of change.
Overall, I did feel the night had a strange feel. For a start two old senators trumpeting how another old senator was the true champion of change, seemed very strange. Also the staging of the convention seems very off. One podium, set against a huge screen on a black stage. Some people might like it I guess, but I just think it seemed a bit erm empty. (Also the crowd seemed set back quite a way from the stage?? I don’t know if that has to do with the shallow steps or if its just me??)
I think the Republicans are lucky they have the drama of Sarah Palin tonight, or this might have become a very dull convention.I think the success or otherwise of this convention is down to her tomorrow night. If she can stop the questions about if she is up to the job, at least for now, then I think the GOP may have done ok, but if she doesn’t, if she comes across outside of the hall as unqualified and unpresidential, then McCain will have to really give the speech of his life on Thursday to keep the race relatively close.

The young folks who are backing Obama and his rock star image need to hit the history books and study what happened under Jimmy Carter, the last minimally experienced ultra liberal candidate we elected president. 14% interest rates; stagflation (look it up-it was invented during his term); lines at the pump; and don’t forget the Iran hostage crisis. (What does it tell you that Putin WANTS Obama elected?)I’ll never forget Carter just telling us to “put on a sweater” and get used to having less. America’s greatest days were behind her. Jimmy Carter has been a sweet, ex-president, but he was a HORRIFIC president. Obama, I fear, is Jimmy Carter 2.

Interesting, isn’t it, that the day after Joe Biden was named Obama’s running mate, McCain’s campaign had an attack ad out against him. Palin, who consensus seems to be saying, was a bizarre and ridiculous pick, has only been congratulated by Obama/Biden. Certainly the media has been having a field day with her, but Obama has put no attack ads out against her, though he so easily could. John McCain, who is running the honorable campaign?
And let’s not even get into the lies that Lieberman told – Biden should light him up today.

Heaven forbid that a woman with 5 children turn out to have a daughter who gets pregnant at 17! Why, if she was only a better executive there is no way that could have happened! Oh, and her husband — two DECADES ago on a DUI — she should have been able to control his behavior too! My gosh, the unmitigated gall of the vicious muck-raking Democrat hypocrites! Wasn’t it the Dems who said it was just peachy to have Clinton cavorting in the Oval Office (it was a “private matter” then). Aren’t the Dems the party that, if not overtly encouraging teen sex, certainly doesn’t do anything to discourage it either. Remember Jocelyn Elders, who said, “I’m against Abstinence programs, because I really consider Abstinence Only to be child abuse.” Brilliant. The liberal media are doing their best to smear Palin through her family. Their hypocrisy nauseates me. I am so DONE with exposing myself to their print/network propaganda. I won’t touch a copy of Time/Newsweek etc. Network TV news? Who cares? I blow right past it. The network Obama-fest has been a real phenomenon, so much so that he was starting to lose poll points through being “over-exposed”. Yeah, we wouldn’t want to folks to get too good a look at him, now would we? I think the American people are still smart enough to see through all of this and to see past the mistakes of some of Palin’s family members — ultimately they will see that she is a fine and true American and better qualified from an executive standpoint than either Obama or Biden. Yes, the jackals will nip at your heels, but stay strong, Sarah!

The most telling thing that came out of that convention last night was not a speaker. To me it was the audience. That group could have been interchanged from a republican convention from the 50′s. A bunch of old white men. That hasen’t changed. The replublicans truly don’t get it. It is tooooo obvious that Palin is being used as a token. HARSH BUT TRUE.
Compared to the democratic convention, this republican display is SAD !!!!

Palin Pick: A+ (more experience and balls than BO)
Bush Factor: B+ (don’t like the guy but he spoke well)
Independents Day: F (Who needs this guy?)
A Soldier’s Story: A++ (no doubt McCain is a true blue AMERICAN and ready for the challenge)
Reading these posts it’s obvious that the Democrats want to be entertained more than they want to acknowledge patriotism, honor and country. Their rock idol keeps it up and moving…just so he can hide his total lack of qualifications. SO if its not showmanship with popular bands then patriotism, honor and country is boring to you dems. There is nothing new on this blog, same ole sheep worshiping a non-patriot idol and an America hating wife. When did it become cool to replace the American flag with ones own egotistical personal logo? And you sheep don’t find this appalling? You are so hung up on the entertainment provided by a rock star idol that you think service and country first is boring, How pathetic! It is because of McCain and the thousands before and after him that a person like obama can FREELY spread his propaganda from sea to shining sea in this great country, for which, btw, obama has not done ONE thing to support, not even one. And a woman, potiential 1st lady, is free to be ashamed of America till it bends to serve her direct interest and she is free to do so because of people like McCain.

People – Obama didn’t have to be vetted!! He earned his right to be in this race with 18 million votes. Palin hasn’t earned a thing. Her own party was introduced to her a few days ago. Palin who? The people praising her at this convention and telling us how great she is haven’t worked a day with her on any political issues. This is the biggest sales job I have ever seen.

Palin needs to put “Family First” otherwise mccain/palin is going to go down hill fast. It should be interesting to see if anyone asks levi (palin’s daughters’ boyfriend) tonight about his my-space page where he states he wants “NO CHILDREN” and also why he uses the F… word so much. (Even comedy shows can’t write stuff like good.)

I’m actually pretty sick of the racists, of the chauvanist males and especially of the “youngsters” in this country who have such blatant disrespect for age. These people hate because of race, sex and age. These are people who have no intelligence whatsoever (only ego), no substance and no gratitude for the wisdom that others have regardless of whether they are black, white, male, female, young, middle-aged, or senior.

I think Palin pulled a fast one — I don’t believe the McCain campaign knew about the pregnant daughter before the pick. McCain should dump Palin. As much as I like a reformer on the ticket, I think she is baggage that McCain doesn’t deserve. She’s white trash. She needs to withdraw NOW!

The ‘children’ of this country would rather have a movie star like Arnold S. (remember Ronald Regan was a star, too) in the White House. Or how about Rocky? Have any of these teenyboppers seen the inside of a library or is their world limited to malls and DVD rental stores?

Fred Thompson said it best: McCain has been tested; he has the fortitude and experience to lead now! He has all the qualifications that all nations throughout history have looked for in a leader. When he is asked the tough questions his reply will not be “that’s above my pay grade”, like a certain spineless candidate out there right now. Watch diddys video, all he and other obama supporters are worried about is “are there any black people in Alaska? Are there any crack heads in Alaska? Obama’s supporters sure have their priorities straight!?!

There is no doubt whatsoever that the major networks are pulling out all the stops in trying to destroy Sarah Palin. However, all they are doing is unmasking themselves and showing the nation their bias toward the democrat ticket. The media is really confirming the left-leaning bias we’ve seen all these years.

Palin’s opening speech: I sued the US Fish and Wildlife agency to overturn the recently awarded “protected species” status for the polar bear – what do I care if they den in the national refuge & become extinct because we want more oil instead of alternative energies because I AM BIG OIL and I want them to have even more record breaking profits at the expense of the people. I also encouraged and allowed the cruel aerial killing of 800 Alaskan wolves. I maybe a mother but I’m certainly not a friend of mother nature.

GOP — F in all areas
F — for Sarah Palin being pick for the VP. This shows McCain’s poor (or lack of) judgment in making very important decisions.
F — for Bush Factor: Why would anyone listen to him, the one that lied about WMD. The one that ran up the deficit to over $9 trillion, and irresponsibly waste the tax payers money. The one who have gas prices at the highest levels in all of US history. I could go on and on and on.
F — Independence Day: How many votes did Lieberman get????
F — Soldier’s Story: You are a hero because you got shot down? How many years ago was that? What does a soldier’s story has to do with being President — For the current President — NOTHING. I would have rather heard more on the current issues that needs to be addressed today.
This is what I think:
GOP — Good Old Party — Good Old Boys — More of the same — The Rich get Richer at everyone else’s expense.
Gov. Sarah Palin, a very bad choice for VP. How can she run the country and she cannot run her own household. Remember that she will automatically become President in the next 4 years if something should happen to McCain. I hear people saying in interviews today (9-3-08) that “you cannot control your teenage children”, but isn’t it true that in today’s society, more parents are being held responsible for their children actions? You can and should install the values (morales or other) in your children that you consider are important. Then you would not have to worry about your children becoming pregnant while still in high school and out of wedlock without any visible means of being able to support the child (and I do not mean the Palins taking care of their grandchild). I’m also concern that they are now encouraging a marriage for their daughter, two wrongs do not make a right. Just because you get pregnant do not means that you should get married, just look at the divorce rate. Is Gov. Palin setting her daughter up for more hurt and pain, just so she can try to save face. Bad judgment all around. My other question is “Is Gov. Palin too concern with her own career goals, instead of her family”? Even in the pictures of the RNC, you see her daughter holding Gov. Palin’s baby instead of Gov. Palin holding the baby.
It seems that Mrs. McCain do not have family values either, I read an article in the Washington Post that she never acknowledges her half sister, and insists that she is an “only child”.
The Republican party is old, tired, corrupt to the core and out of touch with Mainstream Americans. Their only interest is maintaining their “Status Quo”. This look at the way that they partied on Sunday (8-31-08), the start of the RNC instead of being concern about the effects Gustav could have had on Millions of Americans.

Joe Lieberman is a modern day Benedict Arnold.
His speeches could be sold to people with insomia as a cure.
Mcoutoftouch and Palin will lose.
If the Sarah Palin fiesco happened to Joe Biden, the GOP would be all over it, but somehow they will turn an illegitimate pregnancy into a joyous celebration.
Hypocrites and liars. Nothings changed.
Here is my scorecard, Lieberman F
Bush F
Fred Thompson A for comedy, F for substance.
I am tired of hearing what a war hero McCain was, it isn’t a qualification for President.
Thousands of others did the same thing he did, thousands more died. Enough already. Get a job at the V. A.

I don’t expect any of you Dem’s to agree, but she did.
She is proud of her family. and Children.
Her daughter IS expecting. and she is keeping her child, and the young couple are going to marry. Like that is any of our business.
At least she isn’t going off to an abortion clinic to kill her child.
Sarah will make a great president, in 2212!
She blew most people away with her speech. She is for drilling now. go SARAH!

Very disappointing overall. How is it that last week no one knew who Sarah Palin was, and this week she’s the greatest thing since sliced bread??!! How did we ever get along without her? You need more than personality to run the country. The GOP hype machine is certainly in overdrive on this one. I’m sad to be a Republican today. Just vapid.

Posted by: K | September 4, 2008, 12:30 am 12:30 am

For those of us on the fence, this speech was extremely negative. I would be happy to see the day when one party’s way of trying to get ahead is not by bashing the other but offering real answers to the many issues we face. Having voted Republican in the last couple of elections, I can guarantee that that won’t be my choice this time. The sneering, sarcastic remarks by both Sarah and Rudy were uncalled for and highly unprofessional and more is expected from those that want to lead the country. What horrible examples for the youth to follow. Maybe they were appealing to the youth that can’t vote with the type of attitudes and mocking that occurred. More was expected. I am no longer on the fence.

FYI: Many low-income and moderate income neighborhoods depend on community workers, community leaders to help residents with the upkeep of their neighborhoods. These workers/leaders offer a voice to local governmental entities on behalf of the “forgotten” “left-out” communities.
So, Mr. Rudy G. this line of work is not a joke and should not be taken likely and anyone should be proud to have it on their resume.

Posted by: Dene | September 4, 2008, 12:33 am 12:33 am

Palin is very likeable, but her decisions seem to contradict this “great mother” persona we’re being sold. I don’t see how she can put her daughter through the circus that will now be her life. Hasn’t she seen what it’s done to Britney Spears? Seems to me that as a mother your first responsibility is to protect you family. She should have respectfully declined the nomination. I think for McCain to have a real chance to win, she need to remove herself from the ticket.

Gov. Palin rocked the house tonight. It is about time to have someone address the real issues in Washington–total corruption! She has the ability to bring about “Real Change” that is needed in our country.

Posted by: Dave | September 4, 2008, 12:41 am 12:41 am

Palins speech was mean spirited just like the low road we have been treated to for the last 8 years by the Republican party. I hope Obama keeps to the high road and continues to show some class – we won’t see that from Palin or McCain. And what about those family values, how dare Palin preach abstenance as the only form of birth control. This is 2008 not 1908! If that is what SHE chooses for HER family so be it but do not force it on the rest of the women and men of this country. Has she not learned her lesson yet from her seventeen year old daughters pregnancy? Instead they will glorify this teen pregnancy and marriage of two 17 year olds (that couldn’t, or wouldn’t practice abstenance?)thus encouraging teen pregnancy in this country while creating a government that would not support any assistance or government programs to educate the parents and children in this situation. WHAT are they thinking?? Four more years of this Republican rule will take us back to the dark ages in social reforms, and technological advancement.

If you had asked me a year ago if the Rebublican Party had a shot in this years election, I would have given a resounding NO!
I am amazed at how divided the Demacratic Party is. I believe the Washington power brokers never expected Obama to win the nomination, they just wanted to bait and switch voters. As mush as I dislike Hillary, she has much more experience than Obama and is more qualified for the position.
Wake up Democratic Party! I was ready to switch affiliations this time around but you are incapable of putting up a canditate that is a viable choice for main stream Americans to get behind. No matter how many celebrity soundbites and elitist interviews make it onto the clearly liberal media channels, the majority of the American population does not identify with them, and they don’t identify with the majority oif the American population. We are going to wake up on November 5th to news reports and headlines of “Four More Years!” McCain was not my choice for the nomination, but I voted for him because he was the only candidate that had a shot of beating Hillary or Obama. Every other person I have spoken to that voted for McCain voted for him for the same reason. It turns out that he is also the only candidate that if elected, will reach across the aisle and effect any type of change that matters to the majority of the population. If the Democratic Party doesn’t reinvent itself and grasp onto the issues that realy matter to Americans, we are going to continue to have a one-political party system in this country for a long time to come.

Gov. Sarah Palin knocked it out of the park with her speech. She was smart, witty and very at ease in her fantastic delivery of an excellent speech- did a better job with less than a week preparation than Hillary did with 30 years of “experience”. She showed she has substance, grit and determination to do what is right, not what is politically correct. The Dems emasculate their men and demean their women by promising everything on a platter – making the assumption that we can’t take care of ourselves- we’re too stupid to work hard and make a living. AND the questions about Palin’s family’s choices are a slap in the face of any woman. It would not even be an issue had she been a man. Boy those Dems sure are weak-can’t even stand behind their so-called support of women. Sarah Palin has done more work and made executive decisions than Obama and has done so with 5 children. Obama hasn’t even found the time in the past 2 years to provide information requested about his backround-Palin laid it out there in less than 2 days. Only thing Obama has done is write 2 books about himself and have a love fest in Denver. Pretty shallow for someone who wants to lead the free world. Which won’t be free if he is elected. Just wait- there is a lineup of countries and factions just waiting for us to make the mistake of electing someone who wants to sit around and discuss the concepts of international policies rather than make and act on them. Scares the Bejeebies out of me!!!
Score card for Palin A+ across the board!!!!

I cannot tell you how much I loved Sarah’s speech! She didn’t pull any punches and gave it to us straight from the heart. It was so refreshing to hear someone with such common sense and convictions. I didn’t expect George Stephanopoulos to like Palin. I see him as a Democrat who trys to act impartial but he is not.

Posted by: Happy with Sarah | September 4, 2008, 1:04 am 1:04 am

Does Palin have a college degree? In What? From where? Yes, education is important, especially for one who is to be “a heartbeat away”. It has not even been made clear that she graduated from high school, but I suspect she probably has, despite the statements that she “eloped” at a young age – which can have any number of meanings. Her positions on such things as the teaching of Creation “Science” in public schools, and this ever-flowing ignorant nonsense about “person-hood” beginning at fertilization – a concept which has absolutely no basis in science – although these beliefs are shared by many of her Republican cronies, the fact is that heart can be kept beating in a bowl for a good ong time, and the only scientifically acceptable, realistic point at which “person-hood could be considered to begin would be the time when sufficient synapses in the brain are connected, or “hard-wired” for consciousness – awareness of self, and surroundings to begin. People have a right to believe what they wish, but the idea of someone so ignorant of science, and who is obviously possessed of the desire to write these beliefs into law , change our Constitution, and impose this foolishness on all the women of this Country: That is the very thing that has turned me into a Democrat after 41 years as a hard-core volunteering, precinct-chairing, RWC member and office holding Republican! I will be voting for Barack Obama and every other Democrat on my ballot this fall!

Palin’s pick for the number two spot on the ticket is not only laughable, and childish in it’s one-upsmanship selection, it once again highlightsthe hipocracy of the Republican partyin such a transparent way. They have been the most demonizing of others on moral issues up until now,but they not only give this woman a pass, but they celebrate her feminity to a point of exploitation. It’s also amusing how contridictrary all the speeches were tonight proclaming the ” WASHINGTON OUTSIDER ” title for the ticket. Unless I missed something, she is number twoon the ticket, and Mcain has been a “WASHINGTON INSIDER” for well over thirty years. This all just seems so inane to me. The entire atmosphere tonight was more reminecent of a High School pep rally, and Homecoming Queen coronation, than a heartfelt concern for for the country in which they claim only they are putting first. They can spin this seven ways to pergatory, but unless a person has been drinking their own bath water, they can’t seriously believe this woman is ready to occupy the oval office at any given moment. And considering Mcain’s age and medical history, that moment becomes more of a reality than in any election in recent memory. Mcain isno longer the “MAVERICK” he is still being touted to be, and he is slowly diminishing his prison of war hero status with his constant reminder on almost a daily basis of his bravery and patriotism. There are hundreds of other brave souls dead and living who also endured the pain and suffering of wartime, and they truly are heros because most of them don’t flaunt it or wear it on their sleeve. They are the the brave ones because they are truly humble. I like the majority of the population can tell you off the top of my head how many houses I own. I have one house, one wife, one car, and one vote and it will not be for the mcain-palin ticket

This is my first time watching the convention, why because I’m extremely interested in this year of new beginnings. I was very proud of Mr Obama, he is a true visionary with substance not a dull tired old man with a young philly at his side. I really enjoyed Gov Palin apeech until she started swinging mud. which told me a lot about her ethics, if you don’t know the truth, then don’t excite people with lies. My opinion, she is not qualifed and should never have been chosen for such a honor. It’s a disqrace to women, we are smart, go getters, with or without families not hot chicks or a thrump card for a losing party.
